Week 15 – Game 14 – Dolphins @ Bills

Buffalo-Bills-vs-Miami-Dolphins-NFL-Matchup-jpg_656283_ver1.0_1280_720

The Miami Dolphins travel to Orchard Park New York, and if any of you happen to have seen last weeks game against the Indianapolis Colts, there’s a decent chance we could see similar weather this week, and the Canadian winds keep coming (Thanks Toba!).  The temperature should be about 32-35 degrees, and they are expecting afternoon snow showers, but they will probably start after the game, or possibly near the end of the game.  In any case, it’s the right weather for a team who can run the ball, and whaddaya know, we fit right in there buddy!

hi-res-4475dc7769519d30f9c2915784d5c349_crop_north

The Dolphins will be coming off one of their most impressive game performances in quite some time.  I haven’t enjoyed sitting down and watching every minute of a Dolphins game like the Monday Night game against the Patriots as much in what feels like a decade or more.  The 27-20 score wasn’t nearly as close as the score would indicate.  The Dolphins dominated this game for most of the 60 minutes.  Patriots QB Tom Brady didn’t complete a pass to any of his WR’s until the 3rd QTR.  The Patriots had been chewing up 100 yard games on the ground the last couple of weeks, but not this night.  The Dolphins defense held the Pats to just 25 yards rushing on 10 attempts.  OK, that’s skewed, because the Patriots were playing from behind.  The Miami defense shut down Tom Brady to the tune of 24-43 233 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT’s.  Brady had been carving up opposing defenses with a silly 26-4 TD/INT’s, but Xavien Howard tortured Brady, by sticking like glue to the speedy NE wideout Brandin Cooks all night.  Cooks caught one pass for 38 yards, and NO, #25 wasn’t anywhere near him as the Dolphins went into a zone defense for that play.  Howard had a day baby, or make that a night!

25

This game was so impressive, I’m gushing while writing this.  Can this same Dolphins team march into Buffalo and beat them in their own park?  We know what a daunting task that can be, we’ve failed so many years just needing a win up there, and we’ve been heartbroken too many times.  Tyrod Taylor is expected to start, but no question he will be a little gimpy with his knee injury.  We need the defense to be special again, like it was on Monday night.  I still have flashbacks like a PTSD victim,  sitting at Slatterys with Piggy, and watching the Dolphins unravel in Buffalo.  I want no part of that type of game.

The good news is Tyrod Taylor is not 100%.  Shady is,  however, and had a fantastic “snow day” last week against the Colts, and carried the Bills on his back with 32 carries for 156 yards and 1 TD.  For most of the game, neither team even attempted to throw with high winds raking across the field from sideline to sideline, along with about 6″ of snow on the field.  It was crazy cool to watch, and I bet the players had a blast. Bills WR Kelvin Benjamin is also ailing with a knee injury,  so with their QB and best WR dinged up, we have to take advantage of that.

SO Dolphins fans, can Adam Gase come up with a game plan that can defeat the rival Bills in their house, with all the cards on the 2017 season on the table?  Stay tuned my friends, Sunday 1PM – CBS, or whatever stream you can get.  I know you will be watching!

Buffalo has very erratic weather. It could say snow expected and then you cant even watch the game because all ya see is tiny holes in an otherwise solid sheet of snow. Also, I dont know how many of you have had the displeasure of visiting that town, but there aren’t many places on earth i like less

Tyrod has killed us in the past, and he gave us a pretty good fight at the Fest last year too. It’s good for us. Peterman is concussed, so they would have to turn to their 3rd string QB, Joe Webb

    • D's avatar D says:

IMO the choice is Tanny’s on if he is here next year or not. I think the decision will come down to his answer on if he will restructure or not. I think they are going to approach Tanny about re-structuring, with a deadline of when he needs to have his decision by being before FA starts. If he doesnt agree to it, they probably look to re-sign Cutler instead, probably at something akin to what they signed him for this season, but probably more dependent on how he finishes out the year, as that’s going to dictate what kind of leverage he has. If Cutler wants too much or they cant get the deal done they have Tanny and then the decision comes down to if he wont restructure and we do need his cap space, do they cut him/or trade him and try to move up to get a QB. The latter probably happens with the FO making a decision to do a re-build, so it might turn out like the Jets this year where we have a fire sale. Right now, i dont see it going that way, but i do feel like they are going to want and possibly require Tanny to restructure to remain our QB.

I BELIEVE I’m the only one on this site who has spent 5, count ’em, FIVE full winters in Buffalo. The last of those 5 featured a blizzard that left solid 10-12 FEET, that’s FEET, of snow up against our two story house. My bedroom window, on the second floor, was mostly covered by a drift that extended up almost to the roof of the second floor. We were snow bound for 17 days!!!–A guy just a few houses from us DIED of a heart attack before rescuers could get to the house. My Dad eventually constructed a tunnel and we got out on Day 17. He put the business and the house both up for sale a few days later and, eventually, we were off to Palm Beach County, never to return to Buffalo, except for one day in September of 1992 (?) when Miss Penny and I went to a Fins @ Bills game. More on that episode some other time.
    ————————————-
My beautiful wife is scheduled to have her third Lumbar surgery on Wednesday, Jan. 10. It’s her 6th major surgery in the last dozen years. So if I’m away from this site more than usual, you’ll know why. Needless to say, we WON’T be at the Buffalo at Miami game Dec. 31, altho’ we’d sure like to be. Gotta get my girl ready for the 2018 season!!
    ————————————
MADE A COPY of the 1972 “ABSOLUTE PERFECTION” series for a fellow vet down the street who is a HUGE sports fan. Teased him with Game 10, the Jets at Miami game in a totally crazed Orange Bowl Stadium! “Gotta have the rest of them” he told me.
At the end of the story of Super Bowl VII, there were several reactions from many of you. HERDFAN says,”I can’t imagine how exciting it must have been to be a fan then, anticipation leading up to the Super Bowl. I don’t think I would have been able to sleep the whole week leading up to the game.”
—It was WORSE THAN THAT, HERDFAN!! The week of the Jets game (game #10) I barely slept the two nights before the game!! AND, after the game, I found myself shaking as the foghorns and firecrackers went off when the clock struck ZERO!! – – May have brought back some memories from my time in the Army that I wanted to forget (I’d only been OUT of the Army for about a dozen days.) –Thankfully, games 11-14 were NOT nail biters and I was able to get SOME sleep and some order to my life that I lacked on active duty. But the two very close playoff games both went down to THE LAST PLAY, and I was a wreck!!! I only got a little better the week of the Super Bowl. The night before, strangely, I remember sleeping VERY WELL. Then came the Super Bowl, itself, and the unbelievable celebration after the Super Bowl. The next day WAS MY 26th birthday, so I kept celebrating and celebrating some more. IT WOULD KILL ME TODAY to do that!!
–I was another month or two before I could get normal amounts of sleep. My military experiences had taken a bigger toll than I realized. But, after a couple of months, I was my old crazy self, again.
But, the following season, I did NOT tempt fate. I had a relatively mild time celebrating with “My Boyz,” and life was, for the first time in MANY YEARS, really normal and enjoyable. I THANK the Perfect Season, and the season that followed it, for my diminished military life symptoms. –I feel very lucky for so many different reasons, some of which are difficult to put into words.

Taylor threw for 221 yards, 1 TD and another TD rushing. No INT”s. He completed 14 of 28. Not a good completion pct, but he played well. We had to come back after he threw that TD.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

He was pretty horrible in that game. He was very inaccurate and missed a lot of throws that he should have made. We got down early but took a commanding lead in the second half. A good chunk of his yards and completions came in garbage time late in the game. I think they scored on the final series of the game.

  19. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Here’s something to chew on…

Cutler has started 11 games for us in ’17: 17 sacks (4.8 sack%)
Moore has started 2 games for us in ’17: 12 sacks (8.6 sack%)
Tannehill had started 13 games for us in ’16: 29 sacks (6.9 sack%)

    16 game projections for all…

    Cutler: 25 sacks
    Moore: 96 sacks
    Tannehill: 36 sacks

Why do I post this, ya might ask? Because I wonder about a lot of things. And remember, Cutler has been performing behind a piecemeal O-Line for most of this season. What does this mean? We’d better not go all-in for strictly road-graters on the O-Line in the ’18 Draft; they’d better be able to protect Tannehill as well.

  21. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

This is either my 3rd or 4th endorsement of this dude: we do NOT want to pass up on FRANK RAGNOW, C/G, Arkansas, in the ’18 Draft. He can maul with the very best of them, he’s an elite pass-protector (99.6% PBE with only ONE hurry allowed all season: 0 sacks, 0 hits, 1 hurry), and he’s positional versatile (C and RG).

BILLY PRICE, C/G, Ohio State is NICE too, yet that mauler has allowed 1 sack, 2 hits, and 7 hurries all season.

It’s time to remember Branden Albert’s motto when he was with us: “PROTECT THE (Tanne)HILL!!!”.

EITHER of 1) RAGNOW or 2) PRICE will be significant upgrades to our O-Line.

    _______________________________________________________
I believe it means that Cutler is more aware of his surroundings, able to identify and call out his protection and has a very quick release. he’s very accurate and may be the best QB on our roster.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think it’s possible he (Cutler) may have better pocket presence than Tannehill. I wouldn’t say he’s more accurate though, I think they’re pretty close.

  25. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

With 17 mil slated for 2018 and only 4.6 dead money Tannehill may have seen his last snap in Miami. IMO Cutler is more accurate, way…way better Pocket Presence no difference in Arm strength, Tannehill is more athletic
Cutler said he wants to play more, If i had the two head to head from what i have seen Cutler would start.

  26. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Tannehill’s ready to restructure or dump, he is slated for 17.5 mil with 4.6 in dead money, if you are able to get Cutler for another 10 mil it may be wise to dump tanny because his next pay day may be somewhere in the 25 mil range right about Cousins $$$

  27. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

what do you want a better all around QB at apprx 10 mil or a not so great QB AT 25 MIL???

  28. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Better yet trade tannehill and our 1st rounder to Cleveland for the rights to Rosen

  29. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

let Cutler hold the reins and bring Rosen along slowly.

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – I think Gase likes Tannehill, so you’re probably going to be disappointed. I would like to see what Tannehill can do with a full year in Gase’s offense, along with Drake and probably a better O-line. If Cutler wants to play, I don’t think it will be here, unless he wants to take a pay cut, and is willing to just compete for the starting job here, no guarantees.

  31. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Mike E — did you catch that you actually beat me now in FF last week? Close as it was before must have been a stat correction. Only 2nd time have ever seen that. And we switched opponents cause of it too…..you and Toba now.

  32. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Look’s like Bill’s coach Sean McDermott follows the evil genius way too, least when it comes to pre-game pressers. Here was his take on Cutler yesterday.

“I mean, he’s one of the top quarterbacks around the league, I would say. I don’t think much has changed over the years. You mentioned this year, with his transition there. Strong arm, extremely versatile in what he can do obviously moving with the ball in his hands in terms of his feet in the pocket and has great vision for the field and pinpoint accuracy. I mean, he’s as good as there are out there and you saw that Monday night.”

  33. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, you can’t compare stats for this year with two guys in 17 and one in 16 because it’s not the same season or team. This year despite a couple of bad games, the pass pro even with all the injuries and changes to the OL hasn’t been that bad. The run blocking has been more of an issue. I think Drake’s quickness the last two games has helped make it look like less of an issue. But when we want to run say in short yardage we don’t get much of a push.

  34. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    ORob

We don’t have to get rid of tannehill to bring in a new QB. We can draft one and let him compete with tannehill, the rookie sal cap is advantageous to a situation like this.

If the idea is to take a particular qb and move up in the draft – I personally think that’s a bad idea. I can’t get my heart set on a QB who hasn’t played a down in the nfl. There are too many RG3s and Tim Couches out there to get fixated on a draft prospect

When I love at tannehill I see a QB who has been middle of the pack in the nfl. I would rather keep a middle of the pack qb while I take a chance on improving the position then get rid of that QB and take that chance.

I don’t want to trade tannehill or waive him. He gives us a nice fall back if we draft some one who doesn’t pan out

  35. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ryan DID raise his level of play. Except for the terrible game against the Ravens, once Gase got the offense going, he played very well last year in the last 8 games. People seem to dismiss that too easily. He played pretty good in some of the other games too, but he really brought it to another level after the 1-4 start.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That is true and who’s to say it wouldn’t have continued if he didn’t suffer the knee injury. We were beating ARZ 21-9 with RT throwing 3 TDs when he went down in the 3rd quarter. That’s the last game he has played.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tannehill had a 102.65 QBR over the last 8 games. It was an 80.94 over the first 5 games. That’s pretty impressive

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He seems to get viewed these days as if he didn’t raise the level of his play and he was playing poorly.

  36. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – Agreed – He was poor just like the rest of the team in the first 5, but he really upped his play after that.

  37. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s funny not so long ago Cutler was terrible and people were talking about how he always has been. Then he plays better of late and now he’s being talked about as part of the future. LOL

Classic what have you done for me lately fan reactions.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Tired of seeing Tannehill stand like a statue back there unaware that defenders are trying to hack at him to get a turnover, sacked 29 times in 2016, and he didn’t even play the full year, sacked 40 times in 2015! has to be the most sacked QB since he’s been in the league and it aint the OL!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Aaron Rodgers has been sacked 46, 50 and 51 times in a season. It’s not just about sack stats. Sometimes it’s pressure, sometimes it’s holding the ball too long trying to make a play and sometimes it’s a coverage sack. It’s never only on the QB or the OL. Sometimes you give the defense credit.

But this idea that it ain’t the OL when it comes to Tannehill makes it sound like they have nothing to do with it. Why all the talk about needing OL then? Also why did Rodgers who is considered one of the best, most mobile and athletic QBs take so many sacks?

Go look at some Tannehill highlights to see how many times he escaped pressure and that’s not anywhere near all of them.

  38. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Piggy i believe you have to consider Tannehills hit on the salary cap, you also have to consider Cutler in the equation, Is Tannehill heads and tails better than Cutler? i think not. will Tannehill command big $$ on his next contract? no doubt. so do you spend big $$ and tie that up for the next few years for a middle of the road QB when you may have an even better QB who’s flexable and won’t command a cap breaking deal not to mention Fales could back-up Cutler and we get something for Tannehill. I think they should take a hard look pending Cutlers availability next year.

  39. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Mike, What makes you think Gase likes Tannehill over Cutler? because he said as much? I’m sure he’s not going to say anything negative or devalue one of his players. especially if they plan to trade him.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think he believes Ryan has potential here. He saw it come to fruition the 2nd half of the season, and I’m sure he feels there’s no reason that won’t continue. Cutler has been ON one game and OFF the next. He’s also 35 next season, Ryan will be turning 30. Realistically, you can’t trade Tannehill because he’s coming off an injury. He’d have to play in the preseason at a minimum, and maybe even the regular season to prove he’s worth it.

  40. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Cutler also just recently said he’d like to continue playing football, but what if he changes his mind? Tanehill is hungry to come back, and maybe Cutler will be too, but I also think there’s a fair chance he may decide to quit, especially if he doesn’t get an offer he likes.

  41. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

According to ORob all we need to do to make the Super Bowl next year is cut or tradevTannehille and get Ajayi back. It’s a dynasty.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s also forgetting his thought on a balanced attack when it comes to Tannehill. How many times did we run 10-15 times in a game and pass 40+ times in Tannehill’s career? That is going to lead to taking more sacks because you’re now one dimensional and dropping back too often. When we became more balanced in 2016 the sacks went down because we weren’t passing every down.

  42. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    ORob

If you replace tannehill with cutler and draft a qb then maybe that can work for 18
But that’s when it runs it’s course
At best, cutler has enough left for ‘18

That won’t be a problem if your draftee works out and is read for 18 or 19
But if it turns out you drafted David Carr or any of the other misses in the first round over the years
Then you don’t have a QB for ‘19 and are desperate again

The thing about Tannehill is at a minimum we know he can man the job for another 5 years. So if the idea is to improve the play at qb, I think you want that cushion of the safe qb for years just in case your draftee doesn’t pan out

Cutler doesn’t give us any long term security
In fact I’m. It even sure he wants to play in 18
I suspect if he does he is going to want more $ too

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

look at roethlisburger, Brady, Eli Manning, Brees, they’re older are they going anywhere soon. this guy foles may be a great QB so who says we even have to draft one.

I think Tannehills ceiling is limited, career 86 passer rating? that’s in the mid 20’s out of 32 he’s not that bad but he’s also not that good.
here’s the kicker, will you resign him to 20m + do you just eat the 18.5 next year for a below average QB? who knows? maybe so.

  43. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Tannehill is a better QB than Cutler. Cutler has better pocket presence, but RT is more accurate and he doesn’t throw inexplicable interceptions like Cutler does.

  44. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Tank practiced today. So did Damien Williams for that matter.

  45. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Tannehill has a career 86.5 passer rating, has been sacked 213 times!
    sorry but that sucks!

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

      Better than Cutlers!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

No doubt the sacks are more but then Marino played behind a great OL and had a career passer rating of 86.4.and Cutler’s overall rating is 85.4.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

so i would assume that 1 point in passer ratings worth a 15 million per year difference, it’s not that Cutler is that much better but you have to include his salary as well

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yep — safe in assuming that when the age difference and the fact that Tanny was at 93.5 last year are factored in.

Has Tannehill taken some sacks he shouldn’t have, yes. Has the pass pro also allowed too many jail breaks where he was being swarmed and hit before he can even setup, yes. I mean we’ve all seen it. Not sure why you’re trying to leave out some of the reasons for it.

This QB had a career QB rating of 88.6 after his first full 5 seasons? Does that suck too?

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

correction career 86.5 passer rating, wasn’t it you was saying Henne was the next Dan Marino?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Never said that about Henne unless it was a joke. I did think Henne could be like a Phil Simms, ask Ken to verify that. I was wrong on that though. LOL

The 88.6 QB rating I mentioned was Tom Brady his first 5 full seasons. He only attempted 3 passes his rookie year so I didn’t count that. When looking at sacks you have to look at the whole picture, pass attempts and supporting cast. If you think our pass pro has been good since Tannehill has been in the league, I can’t keep having this discussion because it hasn’t been.

Rob – This is all you need to know about Parcells

    Miami Dolphins[edit]

On December 19, 2007, the Miami Herald reported that Parcells had agreed to become the new Executive Vice President of Football Operations of the Miami Dolphins.[30] ESPN reported the following day that he signed a four-year contract.[31] Just a day prior, reports linking Parcells to the Atlanta Falcons’ position of vice president of football operations were leaked.[32] However, the following day the Falcons formally announced that Parcells had turned down the offer because of discussions with Miami.[33]

In the first season as Executive Vice President of Football Operations, Parcells fired head coach Cam Cameron, GM Randy Mueller, along with a few assistant coaches, after a 1–15 finish in the 2007 season. With vacancies at the GM and head coaching spots, he brought in Jeff Ireland to be the general manager and signed Tony Sparano as head coach.

  56. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Rob, maybe Williams getting hurt was a blessing in disguise and now we know more about Drake who is more talented than Williams. But that wasn’t really the point of the discussion, it was about the presence of a running game.

  57. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  58. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Parcells’ deal with Miami was finalized when Huizenga offered to include an opt out clause that allowed him to keep all of his four-year, $16 million contract if Huizenga was no longer the majority owner.
Parcells also admits he never felt comfortable with “neophyte owner” Steve Ross, and was bothered when Ross never followed through on a contract extension Ross routinely mentioned to him
“Ross told me on about four different occasions, ‘Well, I want to sit down and talk to you about the future.’ He never ever does do it,” Parcells says in the book. “I’d been waiting for him and he doesn’t do it. I’m not pushing him, but he never seems to have the time.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Parcells also didn’t like how the power structure was working with Ross now owner along with Ireland and Sparano. Parcells hasn’t spoken to Ireland since the 2011 Harbaugh fiasco. He felt Ireland stabbed Sparano in the back.

    Oh what a conversation!

  60. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Moving forward I can see us rolling with Drake, re-signing Williams and adding another back in the draft. Maybe a guy who can be a hammer tailback at times and a FB/H-Back at times like we’ve been using Gray. But to me Drake opens up our offense because of his ability as a receiver. We can show a big formation look and then turn it into a 3 WR set with him on a LB which is a mismatch. We did that against the Pats. It’s a work in progress but so far so good.

    • rgs322's avatar rgs322 says:

      I like that plan.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You’re a draft guy, any backs that fit that profile? One guy I read up on a few weeks back was Jaylen Samuels out of NCS. He seems to fit the multi-purpose back at 5-11 228.

      • rgs322's avatar rgs322 says:

Actually, Samuels was the one that immediately came to mind. He can give you the flexibility you mentioned. If he was a little taller he would probably go higher in the draft, as is we are probably looking at a 3rd/4th round prospect right now.

    • D's avatar D says:

I could let us letting Williams walk, and i think it will just depend on how much he asks for that will make the decision. They aren’t going to overpay for him, ie give him starting back money, much less elite level RB money. I believe if he comes a 3mil per or less, maybe we re-sign him but we wont be compelled to put much more on the table for him. I think Smith will wind up getting future contract at the very end of they year and likely could be in the mix to make the team in Williams place, and i think we might add another back, a good bang for your buck back, like Bo Scarborough who has some elite level power back skills, and right now seems pretty undervalued in the talking heads evaluations. With emergence of Drake, Williams leverage has disappeared, the team has the upper hand right now.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I don’t see Williams commanding big money. He is good depth and a role player especially catching the ball out of the backfield. However, I don’t think that translates into big money on the open market. Now if Drake was a free agent ….

There are no RB in football right now like those two players, those are special guys. The days of Gale Sayers, Herschel Walker, Payton, Sanders, Emmit Smith, etc, thats just now this NFL. As good as Leveon Bell is, as good as Zeke is, etc they just aren’t on that level of RB talent. Those players, you could prepare for them all day long and they would still beat you.

  70. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

rgs, yeah Samuels isn’t really an H-Back in the NFL size criteria but he might fit well with what we want to do on offense. Also 3rd/4th rd is what I’m looking at because I don’t think we have to go 1st or 2nd for a RB.

    • D's avatar D says:

Only way id take a RB in the first is if someone like Barkley was available to us. I think there could be plenty of options there of having both Drake and Barkley on the field at the same time, both are good receivers and you could have a split backfield with both lined up as RB’s, one on an outlet route one protecting or there for a draw, you could run counter/double-counter runs, you could line them out of slot receiver positions. You could maximize the use of wheel routes and even do double wheels. Just because Drake is good, it doesn’t mean that having another really talented player like that would make for a lot of other options, like the triple option. What!!! Triple option as an option….. that’s like 9 options!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He won’t be there for us, I think he’s going top 5.. Not saying if he fell to us don’t think about it or take him. I don’t think that’s what we need to win a championship though. I think we need some more core stuff up front.

    • rgs322's avatar rgs322 says:

Yea, there’s really no need to go RB in the first 2 rounds.

  71. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, what I think get’s lost sometimes is not all QBs who have won a SB was because they lead the team there but were a part of it. Teams get to and win SBs, the fans and media give the credit to QBs but it’s really not the case. Maybe a few special QBs are the key to it, but again, they are only part of it. Players still have to block, run and catch and play defense and STs or you can lose regardless of the QB. Ask Peyton against Seattle. Gase is also well aware of that.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

It really has gotten silly that the measure of a QB has become SB rings. Plenty of great QBs who never won one and certainly some mediocre guys that have

      • D's avatar D says:

Marino is the best QB to have ever played and he has no rings, but you know, every year i felt like we had a shot, and it was because of him that i had that confidence, despite it never happening.

      • D's avatar D says:

Even the “mediocre” guys that have one, were at least having beastly years. Their elevated play is what put them over the top. Wagner is a good example of this for me. I dont think he was elite, he played decently before he wont the superbowl, but the guy had a stud team around him for several years and it wasnt until he elevated his play to elite levels that they won. So he obviously was a factor, and while he played Mediocre, they never won, he had to bust out a bad-ass season to finally get there.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        Yep!

    • D's avatar D says:

The rest of the team does matter, its a team sport, probably the one that most requires all memebers to be doing things right to win and be champions. However, all you have to do is look at the past few teams who have won the superbowl and who had they had at QB, and also look at the teams everyone automatically predicts will be Superbowl bound anually, and you will know how much that player being of elite caliber means to getting that ring. I get what you are saying, and i know just because they have a great QB doesnt mean they will be in the Superbowl every year, but it sure doesn’t seem to hurt. With that much evidence, you have to admit, even if it isn’t everything it has a big bearing on things.

Id still try to trade back and get him beause i really feel we may need more picks, and more OL prospects than just him, BUT i dont know if i woud be able to pass at our spot, because its very likely we would miss out on him. I like Martinas Rankin from Miss State as a possible James replacement if we have to go that route. If i got the right round/pick spot for Rankin, Clapp, Bowman, Nelson, Wynn, Braden Smith, Ragnow, any of these guys is going to help our OL.

  78. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Out of the last 8 years 6 QBs were top 7 or better SB winners, one was 12 and the other was hurt.
it stands to reason that any QB out of top 10 in QB rating doesn’t stand much of a chance of winning a superbowl

2017 SB Tom Brady was 4th in QB rating
2016 peyton Manning was hurt in 2016 Denver won on Defense
    2015 Brady was #5
    2014 Russell wilson #7
    2013 Joe Flacco #12
    2012 Eli Manning #7
    2011 araon rodgers #3
    2010 drew brees #1

    • D's avatar D says:

Its pretty consistent. Dilfer in 2000 is one, Johnson in 2002. Flacco, like you said was 12th, so i dunno if you count him or not, and Peyton might have been a gimpy arm but he was still and elite QB mind. I would disagree that he didnt have any play on them making the Superbowl and winning, even though statistically he surely didnt carry them.

      • D's avatar D says:

Having an elite level QB is very much part of the winning formula. One of the main reasons is that position has the single most effect on a game of any other, so it can really lower or up your chances of winning, or hell even getting there, depending on how they are performing. Those exceptions were just completely insane defenses around them, not top 5, like number 1, and borderline “best all time” type defenses. The rest of the team had to be perfect to overcome average QB play, no matter how much you slice it, while it can be done without a perfect QB situation, its a helluva lot harder to overcome it and still get there, much less win it.

      • rgs322's avatar rgs322 says:

Very true, D. A franchise QB can mask problems with a team. Without one, almost everything has to break your way. …injuries, career years from unexpected players, and/ or carrier years for an entire unit. …like defense or offensive line/RB.

      • rgs322's avatar rgs322 says:

That is career for an entire unit. …not carrier.

  79. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, I’m not sure Gase is set on any particular OL scheme. I think he likes guys who can execute and block. Of course running out of shotgun is zone, it can’t be power. It’s a counter draw type play. Every team does this. We do line up big and run simple off-tackle and sweeps. We’re not very good at running straight power dives. We caught them guard with Grey twice. Why do I post this, ya might ask? Because I wonder about a lot of things. And remember, Cutler has been performing behind a piecemeal O-Line for most of this season. What does this mean?
    _______________________________________________________
I believe it means that Cutler is more aware of his surroundings, able to identify and call out his protection and has a very quick release. he’s very accurate and may be the best QB on our roster.
    ————-
VERY GOOD translation, for the most part!

But with that stated, Tannehill is NOT, NOT chopped liver. His biggest weakness is his lack of pocket-awareness, and that should be addressed by finally getting this O-Line FIXED (BOTH pass-pro and run-blocking)… THAT is the biggest conclusion one should arrive at: it’s ALL about our O-Line.

And for the record, Cutler isn’t chopped liver, either. Our run-blocking SUCKS this year (we’re at 3.8 YPC this year, down from 4.5 YPC last year), Ajayi is no longer here (no more 8 in-the-box, thus allowing maximum coverage against Cutler), and Cutler barely gets sacked behind our ‘JV’ O-Linemen.

LT: Branden Albert ’16 > Laremy Tunsil ’17
LG: Laremy Tunsil ’16 > Anthony Steen &/OR Ted Larsen ’17
    C: Mike Pouncey ’16 > Mike Pouncey ’17
RG: Jermon Bushrod ’16 > Jermon Bushrod &/OR Sam Young ’17
    RT: Ja’Wuan James ’16 = Ja’Wuan James &/OR Jesse Davis ’17

For the love of hissing cockroaches, I try to make a point about our weaknesses and all the Tannehomers and Tannehaters come out! SHEESH!!! LOL 😆

There’s a reason we haven’t been able to run the ball this season (again, a meager 3.8 YPC), and a reason (beyond injury) that Tannehill won’t be sacked 60+ times this season… our O-Line SUCKS!!!

I can’t understand what you’re saying with Parcells working for free. He had a 4 year contract that he was paid in full for, and he left after 2 1/2 years. Explain to me where working for free comes into the equation.

  82. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

For the record, I’m not a Tannyhomer. I just think he’s criticized to a level of absurdity. I’ve stated many times how I think he fits in and how we should use him. Gase showed the same thing last year. Run the ball and set up play-action and bootlegs with RT’s athletic ability and arm. Don’t have him sitting in shotgun 30+ times per game. That’s not maximizing his skills.

I know it wasn’t the same game and I’m not comparing the two, but I don’t remember Joe Montana ever lining up in shotgun. LOL

He used his athleticism to move around and not always be static. I think Tannehil excels in that type of game. You can’t run that stuff down by two scores and no running game. That’s when they let the dogs out.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think you’re an optimistic realist… and I RESPECT that. I wouldn’t call you a Tannehomer at all. And just as you get frustrated by people over-criticizing Tannehill, I get frustrated by people over-criticizing Cutler.

We should ALL be rooting for BOTH QBs to succeed for the betterment of our team.

HERE ARE the three most important factors in building a championship caliber professional football team: 1) ONE of the VERY BEST head coaches in the NFL at that time. In 1970, new Dolphins head coach DON SHULA took essentially the same team that won 3 games in 1969, added WR Paul Warfield from Cleveland in exchange for a #1 draft pick. The result? The Fins SWEPT the hated Jets in 1970, went 10-4 in the process, and narrowly lost a 21-14 game to the Raiders in the playoffs. The difference, according to Griese, Csonka and Buoniconti, was SHULA and his staff of assistants. SHULA’s one year plan for improvement WORKED!!
    2) A top notch quarterback. Griese certainly was that. And, at age 38 (in 1972), Morrall certainly still was at least average, if not better than that.
    3) A talented GM who can STOCK THE TEAM WITH WINNING PLAYERS. Plain and simple, Joe Thomas was the best GM in Fins history. BOBBY BEATHARD took his place in 1973 and had several very good seasons.
    ——————-
OF COURSE, you have to have an outstanding owner who is committed to winning and who has a plan to do just that. It was Joe Robbie who put together this winning franchise and who selected Shula and Joe Thomas and, later, Bobby Beathard.

I’m not sure I’m willing to draft one early, but that’s just me… I have faith in Tannehill next year, granted we truly fix the O-Line. I’d be VERY happy with Logan Woodside, Toledo, in the later rounds of the Draft.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think Tannehill will be pushed by a rookie QB. This might be a year where we have a vet backup and a rookie develop on the 53. We’re carrying 3 right now. I’m not against drafting a QB at all. But it doesn’t have to be the 1st rd.

      • rgs322's avatar rgs322 says:

M, I think most of us have been on the same page to a certain degree.😉 Upgrade OL, depth at RB, upgrade TE, and if the opportunity presents itself get a young QB. Whether or not that QB is our future starter is another story. Lol.

  85. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

One more thing regarding Tannehill and Cutler…

Seems ya can’t say anything good about Cutler, for when ya do, it’s taken as an insult to Tannehill and the Tannehomers… NOT COOL. Cutler is the current QB of our beloved team and we should be rooting for his success and appreciate when he does well.

Why do so many get their panties in a bunch when one gives Cutler props for when he does well? And I’m not just talking about here… I’m talking about Twitter, as well. That’s absolutely contradictory to rooting for your team and it’s disturbing coming from so-called Phin fans.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not sure what you’re saying. I’ve watched Cutler sucks sentiments go to he’s great and Tannehill who hasn’t played since ARZ of 2016 is a has been ignoring that he started playing at a higher level. Too many fans caught up in contracts and what have you done for me lately.

I would prefer Tannehill/Cutler over Tannehill/Moore but that’s up to Cutler. Draft a young QB as well and roll from there.

He (Quenton Nelson) doesn’t fit our scheme. We don’t play smash mouth football. We are finesse blocking team.
    ———–
I think you’re inadvertently stereotyping Nelson due to his size. He’s elite at both pass-protection and run-blocking, and he can actually PULL very well. We’re talking about a very special player in Nelson, who can probably thrive in ANY scheme/system.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Braden Smith looks good, by the way. I wouldn’t be disappointed if we drafted him.

    • I know it’s only one game but the speed at the next level is more like what he faced vs Miami than it is in college. He looks way too slow to pull at the pro level. I’m not stereotyping him; I’m going off what I’ve seen when I watched him play and I don’t see him fitting our scheme. Our offensive line is like a boxer; stick and move.

You really want to draft a FB!
    ____________________________________

    HELL YES!
Did you see what Grey lining up at fullback did for the running game?

Now just imagine if you will someone who is a natural at that position and not a TE playing FB!!!!
Flowers also is a very good receiver by the way.
And he also is very good at getting that 1 yard run that seems to be our Achilles heel!

        Bring back

I have the new unis a chance
But the difference between the new and the old ones is monumental

The new ones look silly honestly

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

8 TDs. That was the stigma. Scoring. Now he has that under his belt.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He’s also (as they mention in the article) been very professional about it

I just think a player like him doesn’t come along very often
It’s not really just the stats – it’s the heart of the player

        Lock him up
Try to find more like him

I can’t understand what you’re saying with Parcells working for free. He had a 4 year contract that he was paid in full for, and he left after 2 1/2 years. Explain to me where working for free comes into the equation.
    ————————————————————

He was hired by Wayne huzienga, a 4 year deal worth 16 million, he had a contract with an opt out clause, if the team was sold he could opt out and get paid the full contract. he could then sign with another team or join ESPN which he did or go race horses,

not only would he get the money from the dolphins he would be getting paid from other sources as well, he was free of his obligations under his current contract due to the sale of the club.

so essentially if he stayed and did not renew another contract he was working for free.
he didn’t need to run the Dolphins in order to get paid.

in fact he did stay all of the 2009 off season.

if this situation was so unfair then maybe Miami should not have signed that contract.

I don’t blame in for leaving, really he wasn’t qualified as Ross hires only inexperienced help.

I actually thought Grey did a good job ad FB
I’m a fan of a more traditional offense too

But I’m not sure Gass is
I think he’s kind of sold on a 3 WR base

  91. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    I also like your idea

Maybe a big HB who can block can also serve as our HB

Does anyone know – can’t Nick chubb do that sort of thing?

Having an elite level QB is very much part of the winning formula.
    _______________________________________________________

I believe it all starts with being able to control the LOS and running the ball successfully, at that point if your QB is accurate he will put up good numbers due to the opposing D’s attempt to stop the run.
running the ball also keeps your defense fresh and in good spirits and keeps the opposing offense off the field.

Tannehill has a career 86.5 passer rating, has been sacked 213 times!
    sorry but that sucks!

Sorry Rob, go back and read my only kool aid article this offseason. Most all of the acknowledged “elite” qb’s had ratings in the 80’s in their first 5 years. Tannehill was playing at a top 10 level when he got hurt. Right on schedule.

Player Att Comp Pct Yds Avg TD TD% Int Rating
    Ryan Tannehill 527.40 330.60 62.82 3,691.00 7.06 21.20 4.04 13.20 86.56
    Big Rape 381.00 237.80 62.80 2,994.80 8.02 20.20 5.48 13.80 91.26
    Matt Ryan 527.40 330.80 62.36 3,791.40 7.20 25.40 4.76 12.00 90.18
    Peyton Manning 563.40 349.80 62.06 4,123.60 7.34 27.60 4.92 20.00 85.90
    Tom Brady 509.00 315.20 62.00 3,605.80 7.14 24.60 4.86 13.20 88.60
    Drew Brees 361.80 225.00 60.82 2,469.60 7.08 16.00 4.32 10.60 86.64
    Andrew Luck 530.20 314.00 58.96 3,815.60 7.12 26.40 5.00 13.60 86.26

    AVERAGES OVER FIRST 5 YEARS

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

IMO Tannehill should not be mentioned in that group of QBs, he may never reach their status except for maybe Luck.
no doubt he had a good season last year, a lot of that had to do with a pro bowl #4 in rushing yards former RB. however he was still standing in the pocket for hours like he was herman munster and got sacked 29 times

  94. I know people want to fix the o-line with a guy in the first or second round but I’d be just as happy if we got Roquan Smith and his teammate Lorenzo Carter for our LB unit. I’m not sold on Kiko. He doesn’t have the speed to get to the outside and he can’t cover

  95. Sign Cutler at end of season. Trade Tannehill to the Browns for their 2nd first round pick. Trade down to get a pick or two extra. Take Roquan Smith and Mark Andrews in the first, Braden Smith in the 2nd and Logan Woodside in the 3rd.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      No way!

      • what don’t you like about it?

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Trading Tannehill for a 2nd for starters
Rolling with Jay Cutler instead of tannehill

If you want to part ways with tannehill – just draft a qb and see if that qb is realistically going to be better in ‘19
Then trade one of them in 2019

Don’t throw away your safety net in Tannehill if the draftee doesn’t pan out

        Especially for a 2nd

      • I didn’t say trade Tannehill for a 2nd. I said trade him for Cleveland’s 2nd first round pick.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        Oh…oops

I’m still not eager to trade him without knowing we have our new franchise QB in place

And cutler isn’t our franchise QB

Maybe tannehill never gets to another level but I’m rolling with average until I know we have a better piece in place

        No draftee is a guaranty

      • Well, Tannehill hasn’t shown he’s a franchise qb either. there’s NO guarantee he’s the answer either. I think you’re taking a chance no matter what. I’m ready to move on. Of course, I’ve been ready to move on. I think we’ve got just as good a chance with Cutler running the offense as we’ve got with Tannehill and Cutler said he wants to continue to play.

Draft Woodside and let him sit and learn behind Cutler and if he beats him out in camp next year he becomes the starter. If not, you’ve only got a 3rd rd pick at best invested in him and you let him sit another year if Cutler’s signed for 2 yrs.

Of course, this is all speculation but I like to live in fantasy land.

      • I meant if Woodside beat out Cutler in camp in ’19

    • take a look at Woodside and my other fav from Toledo, his wr Cody Thompson:

But with that stated, Tannehill is NOT, NOT chopped liver. His biggest weakness is his lack of pocket-awareness, and that should be addressed by finally getting this O-Line FIXED (BOTH pass-pro and run-blocking)… THAT is the biggest conclusion one should arrive at: it’s ALL about our O-Line.
    __________________________________________________

I’m not sure it’s all about the OL with Tanny, he doesn’t have a clock, he stands in there way to long, these OL can only block so long. why doesn’t Cutler get sacked as much? you said yourself that his OL was worse than Tannys.

But that’s not even the real argument, the real argument is having to resign Tannehill. I think he will command big $$ is it worth resigning a middle of the road maybe below average QB with a career QB rating of 86 to a multi year 25 mil per contract? especially when you have a veteran QB just as good that wont break the bank.
i say fold on Tannehill and draft another future QB unless of course Gase thinks Fales can be the future and let whomever hold a clip board behind Cutler
