Week 16 – Game 15 – Dolphins @ Chiefs

hqdefault

Well Dolphins fans, The Dolphins did what they do best, lose to the Bills when they need to win to stay alive.  Yeah, the Dolphins still have a wanky outside shot of making it if they win, and a whole bunch of other crazy scenarios happen, but let’s face it, this team isn’t worthy.  It’s OK, we were dealt some bad circumstances this season, and we did what we could to plug the holes, but it just wasn’t enough.  We’re 6-8, and again well behind the Patriots, and the Bills who defeated us last week.  All is not doom and gloom though, the future isn’t so bleak for this team.

Ryan Tannehill should return as the starting QB providing he’s healthy and fully recovered from his ACL injury, and we seem to have found a RB who can do it all, run-catch-block.  At WR, until we re-sign Jarvis Landry, the overwhelming talent we thought we had may not be there.  I thought our depth of Parker, Stills, Landry, Carroo, Grant and whoever was excellent, but Parker has disappointed big time, Stills didn’t really live up to his big new contract, and Carroo is like Claude Rains (The Invisible Man for the youngin’s), and Grant, while he has shown flashes of brilliance, may not be anything more than a couple of touches a game type player.  It seems now we have to, and really should pay up for Landry, who brings it every week, and has been the good soldier this season w/o a contract extension.  We’ve also seemed to have found a reliable K for a change, Parkey has been excellent, yet underused.  Hopefully, we get what we need for the O-line, which would be an interior lineman that can not only start, but be better than average.

The defense is promising, as we get what is hopefully 2 key players back from injury, CB Tony Lippett and MLB Raekwon McMillan.  Charles Harris will be bigger and stronger and have some NFL experience, and we’ll have T.J. McDonald for the entire season.  Suh and Wake will be a year older, and maybe, at least in Wakes case, playing time should be cut back some, but Suh seems more than happy to play a ton of snaps.Do we need help at LB, where we have under contract for 2018 Alonso, Timmons, Allen, McMillan, and Anthony.  We can’t really cut Timmons, his dead cap hit is almost his entire salary ($7.2M of $8.2M), but we can reduce his role if one of the younger LB’s show they’re ready.  LB is definitely a possibility in the 2018 draft, but likely not a high priority.  The 2 young DT’s we drafted made an impact, especially Davon Godchaux, who has played quite a lot his rookie year.  Vincent Taylor to a much lesser extent, but he will get a look next year again as a depth player.  The CB’s should be pretty good, and young, with Xavien Howard, Cordrea Tankersley, Tony Lippett, Bobby McCain, Walt Aikens and Torry McTyer.

The Chiefs managed to turn things around after going into a prolonged slump,.  The Chiefs started 2017 on fire, and Alex Smith was being talked about as a league MVP candidate, but then RB Kareem Hunt apparently hit the rookie wall, along with losing S Eric Berry, and the Chiefs went from 5-0, to 6-6.  They have won 2 in a row, and are now at 8-6, and the Chiefs are usually a tough beat at home at Arrowhead, but this season, the Chiefs are just 4-3 at home, not as dominant as in the past.  We have a shot, but we can’t have Jay Cutler play as poorly as he did last week against Buffalo, and overall, the team will have to put forth a better effort.

As always, some of our fans will be rooting for a win, and some will be looking to the draft and hoping to improve our draft position.  We’ll see if this team is still hungry for the playoffs, or if they’ve packed it in for 2017.  Enjoy the game!

  52. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Well, the move of Drake for McCoy was an epic failure. That could spell the end for me in the Championship game. I’m angry I did it now. Outsmarted myself.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our offense ruined it for Drake, we took him out of the game because of dumb mistakes that we’ve seen all year. He looked good today but we kept shooting ourselves.

Oh well, the next important game now is the Senior Bowl.

  61. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

As soon as we dropped the Bills game was just a matter of time , and until we beat NE the week before we were dead team walking too .. ah well RT is back next year everything will be different 😇

  62. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Well at least we now have Closure… Merry Xmas and Happy Chanukah to all , my phone is being dumb, im out. 🎄🕎

  63. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was up 111 to 67 after the 1:00 games – my opponent only has Fitzgerald left who has 5 so far so he now has 72. But I have Agholor and Smith-Schuster both going Monday so unless some real bizarre shit happens I think I’ve won the championship. 🙂

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Congrats Tim! I think I screwed myself with Drake/McCoy, I just have Zeke and Hopkins and K Robbie Gould left and holding to a slim 10 point lead, and my opponent has Le’Veon Bell, Russell Wilson, Ertz and K Chris Boswell. I sure could have used the extra 14 from McCoy, but I made my choice, now I have to live with it.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah our offense screwed Drake’s game by once again bumbling along and being one dimensional. We’re always playing from behind and it’s not all the defense’s fault. They are built to be in competitive games or with a lead so they can attack. We’re not a stud shut you down all day defense.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Thanks! Unless Fitz ends up with 200+ yards and 4 TDs and both of my WRs leave the game before scoring anything I win. LOL

  64. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Congrats Stanger on the win today! Good job today!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      He won the championship?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Our mob league. Yes, it looks like it’s a certainty. That’s not the league I had Drake in though, that’s for good money. I won it last year, I may just be 2nd place this year, not too shabby.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Cool for Stanger and 2nd place isn’t bad but you still have a chance. 🙂

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Thanks Mike E….looking like I just slipped into the playoffs and then stormed to champion off the Gurley factor. But heck the same kicked me out of the bracket in another league where I was the #1 seed. Glad to be able to put out goose and gander at least.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gurley has been my horse too. He’s having a fantastic season and he got real hot at the right time – 79 points (41 and 38) the last two games for me.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

When you see the stats next year on what players were on most championship rosters…..hard to think Gurley won’t be #1 on the list. Nice season, but exploded in the playoff weeks.

  65. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If Dallas can keep the ball away from Russell Wilson, and Le’Veon gets a terrible tummy ache and gets the shits during the game, yeah, I have a shot. 😉

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Houston isn’t bad against the run but they struggle against the pass. But Bell can be a factor in the passing game as well so you need HOU to play a good game on D.

  66. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, the thing is Gurley’s season isn’t over and then there is the playoffs for the Rams. He’s a special player.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yes a special player, but the FF season is over. But obviously a guy who puts up those stats makes you want to watch in the real world too. Rams could be for real.

  67. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – What do you think of Omar Minaya rejoining the Mets as Assistant GM, and head of scouting and player development? I’m thrilled actually, I think we sorely miss someone hitting on young talent, and Minaya consistently did that when he was here.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s a good thing for sure even if strange. LOL

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

What do you find strange about it? Do you think it undermines Alderson?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No just that he’s back. I think he’ll replace Alderson at some point – he’s 70 years old. Minaya is 59.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hear ya. I have no problem with Minaya back at all. Our farm system needs plenty of replenishing, and I don’t mind at all if we sell off some veteran talent to do it. It’s obvious they have no intention of spending, so sell off assets to rebuild the farm, and then we can take a look at some of the young players we get back at some point this season or next season. Problem is, not sure we have much in the way of desirable assets other than some pitching and Cespedes, if he stays healthy. Cespedes!!! lol

  68. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Dion Jordan gets his 3rd sack of the year on Dak Prescott on an outside speed rush.

  69. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL @ Mike and I agree. Something tells me not all will go well with our pitchers as usghe. 😦

  70. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Rhino, it possibly will. As it stands right now, we moved up to picking around 11th.

  71. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    WTF????????????????????

    ▪ Barring something bizarre, Mike Pouncey will start all 16 games in a season for the first time since 2012.

But Pouncey, bedeviled by hip injuries in recent years, insists he isn’t just playing, but playing well.

“I had my best year,” Pouncey said. “Ask the coaches. They’ll tell you the same thing.”

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I do think Pouncey has played well this year, Not sure his best season but I sometimes think we as fans don’t know who was suppose to do what and you might think Pouncey fucked up. Most of the league thinks he’s a great player but Dolfans not so much. I never understood it. I think he’s a top 5 center in the league and always has been.

The official’s comments to Stills is what’s wrong with the NFL. The officials really aren’t very good. They seem confused often and they are also wrong a lot on big plays.

  72. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Best to all you great and crazy people who make life both good an interesting.

  73. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I thought we made a lot of progress this year.
    on our on-side kicks

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I see a lot to look forward to next year. We’re broken this year and it needs to be fixed in the offseason. We have plenty to build on. 🙂

  74. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

    2018 needs

    TE
    G
9 new players on D….keep Suh and Howard.

The offense shot themselves in the foot today, but the D is garbage…..couldn’t stop an old lady in a walker

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Offense makes them play from behind all day every week. The D still needs to jell more and young players to keep getting better, but it’s the offense that ruined the season. The TOP and PPG is awful.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Spent most the draft on D. Signed all the extensions and added couple new FA. Can’t stop a nose bleed

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not true. The D has made plenty of stops and the O does nothing with it. You have to win some games 31-28 or scores like that. We like to score less then 20, that’s our thing. LOL

  75. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Looking at the current draft order we will either be #11 or #12 heading into next week. …it depends on the Oakland game. If we win next week, the lowest be could pick is #15. …I think. If we don’t win next week, we could pick anywhere from #9 to #12 depending on Oakland, Cincy, and Chicago.

  76. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Sometimes the O could use a lending hand. They moved the ball well today but made some costly mistakes. You’d think the D could produce a turnover? How about not let Alex Smith run wild and break frickin tackles…..this D is trash…. Can’t tackle, cover or force turnovers.

All the “stars” on D are just average except Suh.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think Reshad is better than average, and I think Wake hit a wall at some point around mid season. Not sure we really have any other “stars” on our defense. T.J. McDonald gets a little pass because he missed half the season. I look forward to seeing what he can do with Reshad next year, along with Lippett and Tank too.

  77. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Merry Christmas and a belated Happy Chanukkah to everyone.
I hope you have a wonderful winter solstice season
full of fun and love with your family and friends.

  78. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We may be looking at a completely different WR corps next season. I’m not 100% sure we re-sign Landry, and Carroo could be a cut candidate if he doesn’t pick up his game. Parker we’ll give another year because he’s under contract, but hopefully we bring in someone to challenge him, because he is such a disappointing player. He’s like waiting for the Great Pumpkin to show up every year, but just like the Great Pumpkin, he doesn’t. He probably never will. Grant is earning more playing time fir sure. Stills is a part time player. I feel like he duped us last season, because this year, I see pretty much what I saw before, and it’s not good at all. Maybe Stills misses Tannehill, which I’m sure many will scoff at, but they did well together. Anyone have an idea how we go forward on WR next season?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Maybe I was a little too hard on Stills, but he’s not a #1 WR, he’s a complimentary guy.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Nobody ever thought he was a #1 WR. He got paid for his speed and big play threat. The entire offense never really got going this year. They were down right bad to showing promise. But overall not a good season. Just write it off. 2018 has to be better or then we might see some real big changes.

  79. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Dear Santa-
All i want for my Dolphins Christmas is 2 RedZone TD threat, seam-busting TEs,
    4000 yds passing, a 2:1 TD:Int ratio, & a 67% completion rate for our QB,
5 smart LBs who can tackle and cover TEs and RBs,
a healthy OL who can open holes and give our QB time to throw,
with few holding calls and rare false starts,
    a thousand-yard rusher and 2 thousand-yard WRs,
    6 run-stuffing, QB-pressuring, penalty-free DL,
8 INTs from safeties, DL, and LBs and 8 from CBs,
    4 pick Sixes and 2 kick-return TDs,
    5 pro-bowlers and a playoff victory.

Oh and Santa, if there’s any more room in the sleigh,
could I also have double-digit sacks and All Pro for Cam Wake?

I promise everyone on the blog here will be a good girl and pig and boys all season.

  84. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

YESTERDAY, neither Mrs. OD nor yours’ truly wanted to stay home and watch the FINS lose by double digits to Kansas City (an outcome we were 99% sure of). So Mrs. OD decided we’d go and see a movie I’d not heard of called “WONDER.” IT WAS AWESOME!!!! The plot centers on a boy who was born with horrible facial abnormalities that were so bad he often walked around wearing an astronaut’s helmet with a thick, dark, visor which prevented others from seeing his face. Jacob Tremblay plays the young lad who, after 4 years of home schooling is headed to a private academy for his first contact with the real world. Simply put, it’s the best movie we’ve seen THIS YEAR!
    ————————–
Many of you have listed areas where the Fins need to improve. But NONE of you have even mentioned THE SOURCE of these problems, the one and only STEVE ROSS, THE OWNER OF THIS FRANCHISE who has, by far, the worst record of any owner in the franchise’s history in terms of cumulative won-lost overall record. It is my opinion that Steve Ross WILL NEVER get this franchise to a Super Bowl, and any of you who disagree with me are welcome to put your money on the line. PS: Yes, the Miami franchise WILL HOST the Super Bowl in 2020. That, however, that is NOT “Getting to the Super Bowl.” My guess is that Ross will sell the franchise to someone else AFTER the 2020 Super Bowl and take his money back to his permanent home in New York.
This guy may be the King of New York real estate. But he’s proven time and again he hasn’t A CLUE about how to run a WINNING NFL franchise. The sooner he gets back to New York, the better for this franchise’s success (unless he sells the team to ANOTHER PERMANENT NEW YORKER, which has been rumored to be the case for the last couple of years).
    ———————
Besides the “Ross Problem,” this team’s biggest weakness is in the Offensive Line. We need to make the O-Line our #1 priority. Our first pick MUST be an O-Lineman who is ready to start RIGHT NOW. We also need to pick ANOTHER O-LINEMAN before round 5 to plug another O-Line hole. Needs at LB,QB and TE should also be addressed in either the draft (preferably) or in FA (might get a TE in FA). IF the Heisman Trophy winning QB from Oklahoma is available when we pick in round 3 (as Ken suggested might happen) I’d certainly be OK with that.
    ———————
    Merry Christmas to all!!

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

MY “New Yorker” comments should NOT be taken as bigotry against New Yorkers. Instead, I believe that a PERMANT Florida resident likely has a better handle on the local lay of the land, what it needs and what Dolphin fans EXPECT, than does someone who was raised and lives permanently far, far, away for most of the calendar year. TOO BAD ROSS DIDN’T BUY THE jETS!!!!!

  85. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Merry Christmas everyone!
I hope all are healthy and well!

  86. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Merry Christmas day… time for some basketball LOL

    Season is “over”… so … here’s what I think I know:

    1. Good or Bad Cutler is irrelevant… THIS team is built like many top teams… QB play is the key to how the game goes. Can you imagine Marino in this era, on this team? Good Lord, Brady would be top 5 but probably not have the accolades. This is not a fan-boy comment (I hope). Marino’s decision making, accuracy, quick release, and competitiveness would have torched this league’s current rules and philosophies.

    2. Our O-line’s problems seemed two-fold: 1) lack of discipline (so many false starts), and 2) interior not up to the job (excessive holding often points to a guy who keeps getting beat and gets desperate).

    Looking forward:
Late season play has convinced me that this year’s draft’s top picks go back toward the offense. Our FA defensive pickups last year (when they were all on the field) really solidified our defense.

IF, and this is a big IF, cuz it seems like the fastest way to bring in more TALENT throughout the roster… IF we could get a QB in the top ten that could step in and make throws…. it gives us a few years of LOTS of freed up money for other positions. The question on Tannehill, for me, is not whether he can start, the question is whether or not he is worth the percentage of payroll he’ll take up if we retain him. Maybe we should be aggressive to move up and grab someone cuz it gives us 4 years-ish where that position doesn’t “sap our cap”. 🙂 I really wish I could say Tanny is our long term franchise QB… but my gut doesn’t feel it. He’s improved as a leader, he’s always been a competitor, but we keep “hoping” he becomes ‘the man’. In this league, if you don’t have ‘the man’ on your team you got to risk the search for someone who can be ‘the man’.

I’d like to emphasize that this is not a “Tanny debate bait”… I feel its more about the culture of the organization when it comes to the QB position: safe vs risk. Safe won’t win a Super Bowl (I’m not willing to entertain Trent Dilfer re-runs)… safe won’t put you in a position each year to make a run in the playoffs. I think there are probably 10 QBs on other teams that could take the Fins to a Conf Championship Game. If that sounds like a “fair” comment, then we shouldn’t carve up such a large percentage of our payroll to “safe”.

I think we’ll pick higher than 13th… kind of looking like 9th is the highest possible (if Cincy upsets Ravens)… looking like 10th overall very realistic if we lose last game. If we play spoiler for Bills then we could drop to 15th.

Realistic range pretty much set at 9th through 15th.

  89. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Piggy, as of today we are 11th. If Raiders lose tonight against Philly they’d drop to 6-9 with us and Cincy so a 3-way thing might change our 11th. I looked at it more and we’d need some HUGE upsets to get as high as 8th (Jets over Pats, Bengals over Ravens). We are ahead of Ariz now, which leaves Cincy as the biggest OL need barely in front of us (SOS). Not that we do OL, but at least having option.

Piggy, this site calculates the probability of landing at various draft spots…
    http://www.playoffstatus.com/nfl/nfldraftorder.html
13th, your spot used, is our highest probability. 92% chance of landing 11, 12, or 13 (22%, 32%, 38% respectively)

Looks like that delicious MNF win over Pats may have cost us about 7 spots in the draft (potentially top 6). BUT, I can still taste that win and it still makes me smile.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We must get more production out of TE.
We must get a quality OG.
We must get more sacks from the Edge.
We should get either a KR threat or a bruiser back.
We need better tackling LBs and better coverage from LBs.
