The Wedge Scouting Report: Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma

What a miserable end to the Dolphins season!  Actually what a miserable season.  Hmmm…Let’s see if I can line up Buffalo in my sights….

Wedgeand Cannon

Ehhh…Whats the point?  It’s already a dump!  There is nothing this astro cannon can do that they can’t do to themselves or haven’t done to themselves…

May as well start thinking about the NFL draft and get ready for 2018.  And let’s start with the top – let’s start with the Heisman Trophy winner, Baker Mayfield.

Mayfield1

Okay, settle down Tannehill lovers.  I’m just looking at all options.  Besides….we never draft the guys I look at anyway…so this is probably a blessing.

Mayfield2

The Positives:  If you don’t know about Mayfield by now – WAKE UP.  There is a reason he won the the Heisman Trophy.  He’s been dominating College Football this year and has Oklahoma competing for a National Championship (at the time this is written).

Just look at his numbers.  Over 14,000 yards in four years (including his first year at Texas Tech), 129 Touchdowns and only 29 interceptions with a career passer rating of 176.00.  Mayfield had 40 touchdowns in 2016 and 41 in 2017.  Mayfield is probably the best Oklahoma QB since Sam Bradford and some experts since he is a better pro prospect.

He is 8th on NCAA all time passing yards and 6th in touchdowns.  His 2017 QB rating is first in NCAA history surpassing his 2016 QB rating which is 2nd all-time.

We can go on forever about his stats – they are impressive.  But beyond the numbers, Mayfield is confident and competitive and loved by his teammates.

OU VS TULANE

Weaknesses: Okay…I know he’s smallish.  He’s listed at 6’1 and might be even smaller. Although he has been durable at Oklahoma, some question whether at that size he can be that durable in the pros.

He’s not a great athlete either.  He’s not a bad one – he’s just not going to make heads turn if/when he runs the 40 at the combine.

Oh – and then there is the attitude.  He’s a crotch grabber…I guess Mayfield comes off a bit cocky.  I’ve even seen him compared to Johnny Manziel. YUK!

Mayfiled3

The Alien Dust:  He’s a gamble.  What front office will take that gamble?  There are many great college quarterbacks that don’t produce in the NFL.  Mayfield is smallish and has that personality that gets under some human’s skin.  But not this alien.

I actually love him.  I think h has a chance of being a great NFL QB.  His consistency in college should not be ignored.  He’s a natural passer with great pocket presence and does a great job of improving when a play breaks down.

That confidence doesn’t bother me.  This alien thinks a lot of humans may regret passing on Mayfie;ld.  Currently I’m hearing he is the 4th ranked QB behind Rosen, Darnold and Allen – but this is a weird draft, and a QB like Mayfield of Jackson (Louisville) may not get selected as high as the other quarterbacks – but still have a better career.  The QB prospect analysis always has had inconsistent results.

MayfiledCannon

But the inability to predict success won’t stop this alien from comparing Mayfield to an alien weapon of destruction.  Mayfield is the lethal Astro Cannon!

You can see his highlights here

Read about Drake and maturity issues…..that doesn’t get you to be RB1 right away. Williams, they love with work ethic…..easy to see why he was first up.

  2. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Maybe Drake is a “gamer”?
Could be he doesn’t look that good in practice? Or in the meeting?

Some people don’t / can’t turn it up for whatever reason unless it’s live?

    Purely speculation on my part

    • D's avatar D says:

I agree that there are players like that, but i am not sure i feel thats Drake. I think he was needing to clean up his game before being given the role, as i stated above, he did get first shot at it, but he fumbled and then Williams took over for a while. Good play by Williams combined with sloppy stuff by Drake did it, Drake was mature enough to get past it and re-establish himself

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think Gase wanted Drake to earn it, and I know he has a lot of respect for Damien Williams. It’s not that crazy. Coaches have reasons for either playing a player or not playing a player that we are not privy to. Just like me when I bitch about Carroo. I probably vent towards Gase, when in reality, I should be venting at Carroo. If he shows up and works hard, studies hard, and plays well, he’ll get his chances.

Could that even mean the Dolphins use their first-round pick — which will be 11th overall — on a quarterback, even with a healthy Tannehill?

“We’ve always said we’ll take the best player on our board,” Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said. “I talked from Day 1. If J.J. Watt’s on the draft board when we’re picking, we’re not going to pass on J.J. Watt because defensive end we feel good about.”…
    ————
Even with a healthy Tannehill? We’re talking about a 7th-year QB who hasn’t even made the Pro-Bowl once, who now has an injury history. If ya can upgrade the most important position in football, ya do it and without hesitation.

Now if you’re talking about Ndamukong Suh, that’s a different story. If this silly clown Grier would actually draft a DT @ R1P11 (without thought of moving Suh out of town), he deserves to be fired. We have WAY more problems than drafting a DT @ R1P11.

This whole ‘BPA’ ideology — no matter what — is what gets GMs fired. Get the BPA at a position of NEED!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Reaching for need is what gets GMs fired. Some teams only have 15 prospects with a 1st rd grade on their board. So at #11 you are going to take one of those 15, not a guy at a need position with a 2nd rd grade.

As the draft goes on you can start to marry need a little more to BPA, but not at the top of the 1st rd.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

What you say is true in your example… but it’s contingent on the quality/quantity of Draft talent in a given year. That recipe isn’t good for EVERY Draft, of course.

I think one of the reasons Ireland traded up for Dion Jordan in ’13 is because the overall talent of that year SUCKED… BADLY. But in other years, there’s such a bevvy of talent that ya almost can’t go wrong in the 1st round.

It all contingent upon the circumstances.

  6. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Constantly losing is what gets everyone fired.

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, I’m sure Mr. T and Grier will want to have the chance at drafting BPA of need. That’s not always the case though. You don’t want to pass on a player who you project as being a potential all-pro because you need another position and that guy is just okay. That’s all I’m saying.

    ————————————————–
I think there is a possibility that Fasano, Bushrod, Mauluga, and Misi all could retire this year. Id be willing to bring back both Fasano and Bushrod on the cheap if they were still up for another year. Moore might be tempted to retire, especially if it means he wont be resigned by us.

I would consider Landry and Hayes as my primary re-sign targets, and be willing to meet them half way on their contract demands. Thats going to be tough with Landry but by the time we get to that point i feel we will have over double that cap space to make our moves.

After Fales played well, id be willing to ride with him as a backup, unless we draft a QB who makes us comfortable with just rolling with them as the backup. If not i think i still keep the draft pick on the roster and roll with 3 QB’s and try to re-sign Fales to a modest contract.

Id make team friendly offered to Fede, and Williams, and if they get better offers i look for value options in FA or the draft to replace them, id like to keep them but we wont have a problem finding players who can fill their roles.

Id make a decent, but still team friendly offer to Parkey as i feel he did a pretty good job and there seems to be a market for kickers this year so it will have to be a decent offer. I feel like he would be a little tougher to replace, though this upcoming year does have some solid kickers in that class.

Thomas and Aikens also deserve to be offered better than just a JAG contract as they are excellent ST’ers and can fill in in rotational backup capacity at S or CB, id offer them accordingly.

Young, Verner, Denney and Allen would all get offers but they would be baseline 1 year offers, much like they got this past year.

  9. D's avatar D says:

Proposed off season moves. Starting with cap projection of 14mil.

Cut Thomas. I just don’t think he has it anymore, he is slow, clunky, and just not worth the pay he is getting. He also gets us 6.6 mil in cap savings being cut. We could try to trade him but i dont see us being able to get that done. (20.6mil)

Im going to try to extend James to get his cap hit down from 9mil to hopefully 6mil or so at least in this upcoming year, this is completely off the determination that his recovery from injury looks to be moving in the right direction and the ETA should be by beginning of the regular season next year. (23.6mil)

Im going ot ask Tanny to restructure giving him more in guarantees split over the next couple of years and getting his cap hit down to about 10mil. (32.6mil)

Im going to ask Wake to restructure again, giving him more in guarantees, but taking his cap hit down to 6mil (35.2mil)

    Re-sign Hayes (30.2mil)
    Re-sign Bushrod (27.2mil)
    Re-sign Fasano (25.2mil)
    Re-sign Thomas (23.2mil)
    Re-sign Aikens (21.2mil)
    Re-sign Williams (19.2mil)
    Re-sign Verner (18.2mil)
Re-sign Landry but backload the contract to keep cap low, give good guarantees (10.2mil)

    Rookie class = approx 5mil (5.2mil)

As alternates to re-signing Williams and/or drafting a guy, Eddie Lacy might be a guy who is a value pickup in FA, with little risk an a ton of reward. He would for sure give us a power back option and if his carries were limited to be just whats needed to give Drake a breather, that might not be a bad pickup.

As an alternate to Fasano, Virgil Green would give us decent blocking ability with a little better receiving ability, or Trey Burton who would give us a much better receiving option and decent blocking. We would still want to draft a guy pretty high though.

As an alternate to Verner, Davon House who better fits our system than Verner does.

    Draft
    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 22 (BUF): Quenton Nelson, OG, Notre Dame (A)
Round 1 Pick 24 (BUF): Roquan Smith, ILB, Georgia (A)
Round 2 Pick 11: Taven Bryan, DT, Florida (B+)
    Round 3 Pick 11: Frank Ragnow, C/OG, Arkansas (B)
Round 4 Pick 11: Luke Falk, QB, Washington State (A+)
Round 4 Pick 32: Troy Fumagalli, TE, Wisconsin (A)
Round 6 Pick 11: Bo Scarbrough, RB, Alabama (A)
Round 7 Pick 7: Nick Washington, FS, Florida (C)
Round 7 Pick 11: Bentley Spain, OT, North Carolina (C+)

Trade back with Buffalo kind of makes sense if there is QB still available that they are interested in, lime maybe Lamar Jackson. Id possibly cut Timmons before June 1st, if everything with Roquan was looking good and maybe i had another FA move id like to do where his cap savings might open that up for me.

There are verticle and horizontal aspects to draft boards so im sure the horizontal is where the need part comes in. If you have two people still on the same horizontal, you take the one that’s in the position of need, but if you have a guy who is on a horizontal line above everyone else, you take him as a BPA pick. I cant see any system being completely one or the other.

I just found a pretty amazing stat after checking out the top QBs of the 2018 Draft. I wanted to know how they performed against the top-20 Defenses of the FBS, so I cross referenced and added those stats to the image below. NOBODY comes close to doing what Mayfield has done.

Many will talk bad about Baker Mayfield, but the truth is that he’s a BALLER against top-notch competition. And forget that he’s 6’0″… the average height of his O-Line is 6’5″… just like Russell Wilson at Wisconsin.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe he’ll be the exception. We’ll know soon enough what the scouts think of his projection at the NFL level.

    • the thing I look at when I look at Mayfield is the # of completions to the open guy and how he does when he has to put it in a tight window and he doesn’t do well with the latter.

a lot of the passes he throws look amazing but his guys outright beat the defenses because of the great scheme from his coach. but, as we saw in the 2nd half of the game vs Georgia, if he’s got to get it to guys who are covered he’s a completely different qb.

  25. Well, Gase has decided to put his eggs all in one basket and bring in his buddy as the new OC and stick with Tannehill as the starter so when his short NFL head coaching career comes to an end at the end of next season he will have nobody to blame but himself.

  26. So here’s a question. What are we doing with Landry? Are we playing the game? Are we making it look like we don’t want him so he takes less or does that really matter because if he gets an higher offer he’s out of here?

Nobody on the team is saying anything solid as to whether or not they want to bring him back and that could be the “ploy” going into contract negotiations but if he doesn’t want to sign for $10 or $11 million and thinks he can get more elsewhere he could just walk.

  27. I don’t want anyone getting pissed over this comment but this is the way I look at it and the stats don’t lie. We lose more games when we throw the ball a lot to Landry than we win. Not saying it as a slight to Landry but, rather, a slight to the offensive play calling or maybe the quarterback or whomever is responsible for this.

You take a look at some other teams and they utilize the talent they’ve got. They’re throwing to everyone. They’ve got everyone involved in the offense. Maybe you can argue, “yeah, that’s a great concept but when you don’t have the talent you can’t do that”.

Was Dion Lewis anything great before going to the Pats. Look at what they’ve done with guys like Burkhead. 5 td’s this season. So, you take what you’ve got and you use it. If you keep going to the same guy over and over it’s not putting you in a great position to succeed. Would be great if he’s a Megatron but when he isn’t you get the ball to as many guys as you can so the defense needs to cover everybody and not just one guy.

I wouldn’t worry about Landry, he’ll be another Gase casualty just like Ajayi. after their sideline argument affair then Gase said publicly that Landry getting ejected was an embarrassment to the team. that it was at the pinnacle of extremely bad.
it doesn’t seem like something you would say to the media if you want this player back, i think the only way we get landry back is via the tag.
i hope we only have one more year of this guy, he’s killing this team!

In reality i think 6-10 was way more of an embarrassment than anything Landry did.

  32. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I read back and seen all the arguments and stats about Ajayi vs Drake, I get it Drake’s here and Ajayi’s not so you’re blinded by loyalty.

a guy breaks a 60 yard run then avgs 1 yard per carry, you add it all up and and divide by the number of carries it is misleading. it makes him look like he’s a work horse.

IMO Drake does not pass the eye test, he’s not a RB i would want to carry the load, don’t get me wrong i would want him but not as bread and butter rb.

against Buffalo Drake had 14 carries for 75 yards, that’s and average of over 5 yards a carry,
so why didn’t they stick with it? could it be that 2 of the runs accounted for the most of that 75 yards? one he ran for 32 yards? so what kind of average do you have now for 12 of his other runs?

let me give you a stat,
this team lost every game this year when they ran the ball 15 times or less, they won every game they ran the ball 20 times or more.
so for all you complicated sophisticated aqua colored glasses wearing examiners out there what does the above stat tell you?

it looks pretty simple to me.

Ajayi did the same thing. One run of 60 yards, and then 10 of 3 or less. I don’t get what you’re saying. Just because Gase leaned on him more, and gave him 30 carries a game doesn’t make him a better RB. I really believe that Drake is the more talented back, he’s as good a runner, he’s faster, and he’s a much better receiver, and a better blocker. He showed that this season clearly, whether you choose to see it or not is up to you.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

If Ajayi carried the ball 30 times a game we would be the number one seed in the AFC, Comparing Ajayi to Drake is like comparing a TE to a WR, they have different skill sets, Ajayi is more of a Marshawn Lynch than Drake is.
that said Ajayi is gone, nothing can be done about that, if MR Gase wants success in 2018 he’d better get him a Marshawn Lynch type RB, having Drake as your bread and butter guy won’t work. JMO

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Then why didn’t Philly go straight to 30 a game with Ajayi? Ajayi hasn’t been given more than 15 rushes in a single game since he left. Why? Last year he put up 537 yards in 151 attempts over 11 games for a 3.56 average. Outside of 4 really good games, he was an average back. You are attributing all of our success last year to one guy. That’s pretty silly.

  43. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Maybe just calling it like he sees it or maybe looking for contract negotiation position…..or maybe both. Gase on the Landry ejection.

“This last game was probably the pinnacle of what I’ve ever seen with him during a game. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it get to a level where it was extremely bad. But the last game was about as embarrassing as I’ve seen in a long time. It was something we can’t have happen.”

  44. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Rob

Gase is likely never going to have a bread and butter back. He wants a stable of backs, probably 3 that he can count on, and he will use 2 of them a lot, one of them sparingly. That’s what he did in DEN with CJ Anderson, Ronnie Hillman and Montee Ball, and then in CHI with Matt Forte, Jeremy Langford and Kadeem Carey. Don’t expect any of our backs to get more than 20 carries in a game, but hopefully combined, we’ll be around 25-30. It’s all there to see, I’m not making this stuff up. Not only that, but he’s said it himself many times.

  45. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I will take Drake over Ajayi every day. He is faster, more explosive, a better receiver and a better blocker

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

They are both good backs, but one is the type Rob wants and the other Gase does. You remember how Gase only begrudgingly moved to focusing on Ajayi and power run last year? Wasn’t his vision for sure, but he couldn’t argue with the 200 yard games.

They also have three 2nd rd picks so they can really add some good young talent to their roster.

    • Browns could go a number of different ways. Thomas is getting up in age so if they take their qb first they can take someone like Brown at #4 to be the future at LT and protect their new qb and then come back at the top of the 2nd and take another offensive lineman and a running back at #35. They have so much they can do.

Been pissed all morning. I was in a fender bender 6 weeks ago. Was behind two vehicles going through a stop light. Lead vehicle slammed on her brakes cause she heard an ambulance. Dude in front of me slammed his brakes and I hit him from behind. Damage looked much worse than it was. Dude I hit even said he couldn’t believe the damage cause he just felt a bump. All vehicles drove away after state trooper determined it to be a no fault accident. Now I get a call from my insurance company saying he is filing an injury claim. This is BS. I feel like it is fraud.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Sounds like he talked to someone who said he could money out of it. And yeah that means it could be fraud. My guess is he will be claiming soft tissue injuries (the old school whiplash). Could be right cause they come on after, but then there is no diagnostic test for them either other than self report. Good news is you have insurance. Ken will know more…he’s an expert on such.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

      BBM:
I see this every day. Sometimes it’s real and sometimes it is BS and sometimes it is a little bit of both. The fact that he drove off feeling fine is not a true indication of whether or not he was hurt. Often times it takes 24 to 48 hours for injuries and in particular soft tissue injuries to manifest themselves. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard in deposition that the person was fine and then woke up the next morning and was in pain. I used to think it was BS and then in 2008 I was rear ended. I felt fine at the accident scene and even helped push the car off the road. I woke up the next morning stiff as a board. The bottom line your insurance company and or lawyer will get the medical records and evaluate whether or not there is an injury and they will make the decision whether they should settle or try. The bottom line is you have coverage and accidents like this are why you have insurance

  55. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

M13, if that is the way the first 10 picks go, I am definitely trying to trade down because there is much more talent left. Even if I have to bite the bullet and not get what #11 is worth. I will trade down even if it is just to gain 1 pick in the 2 or 3 round.

  56. You could trash Ajayi all you want because he’s not on the team anymore and that’s fine but everyone was singing his praises last year when he had the two back to back 200 hundred yard performances.

Deny it all you want but when you look at what Drake did in the last few games of the season if both Drake and Ajayi were on the team how much better off would we have been with that backfield.

    • D's avatar D says:

Lou, trade back doesn’t mean you are getting a worse player, i mean sure it can mean that but it also doesn’t have to. There can be a dip in the player values and picking at 20 will land you just as good as it did at 11. It really depends on who is available at 11, and how many people are left on the board that you value equally. If one is on a whole other level evaluation wise you stay put and draft the guy, if there isnt and you can trade back (lets say 4 spots) and you have 4 players you have on equal ranking, then you dont lose anything trading back because you are still guaranteed to get one of those guys who have on the same evaluation level. I think pick hording can easily do what you are talking about and wash out the chance to get a stud and leave you with a bunch of JAG’s, but we don’t really know what their evaluation of a player is, that’s not information they give out. Trade back could be a bad idea, but we wont know that until we next up, and probably not even then until the other teams pick is in and disclosed.

We, as fans, definitely have no business thinking our evaluation of a guy is correct with relation to what the professionals think. We are not GM’s and no matter the amount of research we do behind a computer, we dont get to personally interview these kids, we don’t get to watch them in person, we only see them the few times during combine that ESPN/NFL network shows us. We dont have the amount of tape they have on them, we dont have access to their coaches for reference. Simply put, we aren’t professionals at this, and they are and have a staff of professionals at their disposal to put it all together.

    ——————————————–
It may or may not be fraud BBM, but i think you will wind up winning simply because they refused treatment at the scene. I recently had a buddy who had very similar thing happen and it was even a little old lady so they had the sympathy factor, but it did take some time, but it eventually got thrown out or at least negotiated out between the insurance companies and did not affect him. Most people who at all feel like they may have gotten injured should always receive treatment there, because its a safeguard against finding out something is wrong later and then having to fight for coverage for your bills. You are on the other side of this one, i know, but im just saying, they likely screwed themslves (and you wont have to pay for anything) because they didnt see attention at that time.

Also as far as claiming they are injured as an after effect, adrenaline can keep you from feeling an injury, hell you could feel better physically than you have in a while while you are still jacked up on adrenaline. When it wears off, the reality sinks in and the pain starts to show itself, so yeah i believe it easily could be legit, but none of that really matters, it matter more that they followed the right protocol when it happened and they didnt.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Refusing treatment means nothing. It is common. It happens all the time. After an accident you experience an adrenaline surge which often times masks injuries until 24 to 48?hours later

The snow drifts were about 2 feet, and overall, there was about 12″ of snow on the level areas, which wasn’t much, due to the drifts near the garage, and then the plows that made the front about 2 feet as well. That was a job for sure. I’m achy already

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah the plowed stuff is the worst and was my toughest job. I park my SUV in the street so my wife and daughter park in the driveway. Luckily the plows came by as my neighbors and I were shoveling so we moved our vehicles and they took away a good portion of it, but still had to do the apron of the driveway and my parking spot. That took most of the time and is the heaviest.

You’re closer to the coast so you got more snow than I did with this storm. I’m up much higher. But we sometimes get more with a different storm. It’s always great when you’re done though.

      • I fucking hated that. I used to clear the snow 3 feet onto the road so when the plow came by he wouldn’t plow the snow back in front of my house but the prick would push the snow from in front of a building next to my house and disperse it down the whole side of the street leaving a good portion of it where I had just cleaned it out of and he would do it with a big fucking smirk on his face as he was going by.

Gase is likely never going to have a bread and butter back. He wants a stable of backs, probably 3 that he can count on, and he will use 2 of them a lot, one of them sparingly. That’s what he did in DEN with CJ Anderson, Matt Forte
    ____________________________________________
exactly, that’s the type of backs we need, CJ anderson or a Matt Forte, Drake has a different skill set than those guys

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Like what? All three of those backs can play on 3 downs.

What I’d like to see is Drake as the feature, Williams splitting some time more on receiving downs, then a physical back to pound on a defense a bit, short yardage and goal line.
      Drake 17-18
      Williams 6-7
      Physical back 6-7

Drake’s big play ability needs to be on the field because it increases the chance of game changing plays. I always knew Drake was tough, fast and gifted as a receiver. I did not know how stop and go quick he is. Add his long distance speed to that and you get long TD runs. Not going to get them as often only getting 10 rushes. His role as a receiver should increase in 2018 as well.

  72. So Adam Gase is getting his staff together with Loggains hired as the new OC and now Washburn as the new o-line coach. Chances are there will be a couple more changes made before this is all over. So here’s the question. These guys are handpicked by Gase.

What kind of results does he need to get with this staff in ’18?

  73. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It is not encouraging that the track record of these coach’s squads have been in the bottom of the league stats wise, but there is hope that they can get better. I hope everything clicks and the team see success, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

    • I prefer to just sit back and see what happens. I don’t get excited over coach hires. Just want to see results. If they get the results that’s great. Thing is, Gase is getting HIS guys now so you just have to wonder what they’re going to say the results need to be if anything.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They haven’t been on very talented teams either. Coaches gets reputations for hard work, preparation, working well with players, communication and ideas. Not stats. Like they say you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken shit. You need talent. Most coaches in the NFL have gone through tough times. When it all comes together you start seeing these coaches get bigger and better opportunities.

I’m less concerned with coaching than I am with performance. The one thing Gase has to re-evaluate is how to coach better fundamentals and discipline. We kill ourselves in those areas. He might be learning that players are not always prepared to do their jobs the way he would think as a young guy and coach. He’s gotta get his message across better or play the guys who do get it. That’s what Belichick does. If you can’t do your job the way we coach it you’re out.

    • For instance, we tried two guys who were new to head coaching in Sparano and Philbin and didn’t get good results so I was hoping for someone with experience. I liked Mike Smith out of all of them. But even if we hired Smith I wouldn’t be thinking he was going to automatically get great results. Just thought having an experienced head coach would have given them something more solid to work with and build the team with.

However, if he wasn’t getting results I wouldn’t be any happier with him than with anyone else.

  74. The rift between Brady, Belichick and Kraft is so bad it created a major disturbance in the atmosphere and caused a Bomb Cyclone to hit the New England area and Boston is under water. Holy shit, these guys were dealing with some nasty stuff. All three must have sold their souls to win those championships

  81. Wow. So the story is Belichick is so pissed at Kraft because he wanted to prove he was the reason behind the Pats success he was ready to move on from Brady and use Jimmy G. He wanted to show everyone he was the shit in NE and win without Brady and Kraft blocked him so Belichick traded away both qb’s and now NE is down to only Brady.

Nelson will help BOTH Tunsil and Pouncy, while Ragnow helps BOTH our RT and Pouncey.

you can’t argue with Ajayi’s success in Philly. He went there and had a better 2nd half of the year and had almost as many yds as he did with us with half the carries. that’s still pretty darn good for a guy with bone on bone and not having good vision. he didn’t have the year he had last year but it 873 yds total isn’t bad considering he split time with two other backs in Philly.

  87. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

2nd player I’ve heard of talking about distractions?

“You take care of your business and you can make it into the playoffs,” Denney said. “I think this is the time when you look back and think, ‘Man if we would have won this game. And this game. And we should have won these two games and we’d be in the playoffs.’ And if everyone could have that perspective that they have now, looking back on the season, during the season, I think maybe we might find a way to dig deeper and put off the distractions, and put in a little more focus, and effort on those games we should have had.”

Denney doesn’t speak up often, but when he does he really has the respect of the players and coaches.

Denney is 39 years old (“I’ll be here as long as I can. I want to stay here until I get shown the door,” he said) and he is an under-the-radar team leader on a team that coach Adam Gase conceded this week, could use stronger leadership.

He’s played for Nick Saban, Cam Cameron, Tony Sparano, Todd Bowles, Joe Philbin, Dan Campbell, and Gase. And never, ever, has Denney seen a season as strange as this one. You know the rundown — Hurricane Irma, Lawrence Timmons AWOL, season-ending injuries to Ryan Tannehill and Raekwon McMillan, Chris Foerster’s departure, Rey Maualuga’s bar fight…

Reggie Bush – didn’t think he was #2 draft status and that was proven. Good shifty, explosive RB with durability issues and some questionable character issues. I don’t think he was a bad guy though.

Lamar Miller – always liked him, watched him get better and hit a wall once he moved onto HOU. Explosive RB not worth his contract as a feature back.

Jay Ajayi – burst onto the scene in his 2nd season, set and tied some records with game performances. Looked like a star but for some reason we traded him during the next season. I’m leaving it there.

I agree all journalists LOVE to name and sensationalize things .. even such mundane things like storms… i will admit i LMAO last year or year before when NYC got shut down in advance of The SnowStorm of The Century , and it ended up being basically a soft powdering

Encouraging that we have hired new coaches for the most undisciplined areas of the team … Dilly Dilly to trying a chance of face/pace .. hope it turns out

I love Landry’s passion but have said for the last 2 years , he needs to get his anger under control as it has and will hurt the team .. having said that PAY THE MAN !!!!!

Jarvis and Odell have the same look at me shit going on as good as they both are in their own games. Both are highly competitive players but they do have baggage. Not bad character stuff, but unnecessary game stuff. Just go be great and you will both get paid.

Both may not get what was on the table heading into 2017. Questions for both of them with a long-term contract in 2018. Somehow they will get paid. LOL

Toba, shit like this went down.

  93. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Tim : both have proven to be very talented players and yes show offs(practicing one handed catches) trying to outdo each other.. Pretty sure both will be handsomely compensated by their current teams on resigning.. i do not want to have to replace Landry

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I know but he made it tougher with shit that a leader should walk away from. That is needed.

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Totally agree he went way too far and that is the one area he needs to vastly improve on as it costs the Team too often. But still keep the passion , hard line to walk. I want to have AND eat my cake

  94. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s going to be an even worse PR move for us to let Landry walk to anyone than trading Ajayi. At the end of the day, you better be right.

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Yep , and we have turned around the atmosphere a lot to the point that players Want to come play here , that would be a large step backwards as well

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Here’s the thing, does a targeted TE and a guy like Morgan make up for what Landry does? Does Grant become more involved, Drake too as a receiver? The offense might just change without paying a WR major money. We could also add someone else.

I love so many variables about Landry, but is he that good to pay him elite money?

He is an enigma. If I had to guess I think we might let him walk. In the big scheme of things I don’t think a WR is the key to winning as much as I love the toughness and competitiveness to Landry’s game.

      • I think Gase has a huge ego and I think Gase, like Belichick, wants to prove that he is going to be the reason behind the team’s success and not any one individual player. I believe he wants to develop the offense to the point where he can plug in anyone and be successful with any number of players.

Whether he is going to get it to work or not is yet to be seen and it may work or it may not work. He’s made some mistake his first two seasons that cost the team some games and if he can learn from those mistakes going forward maybe we’ve got something.\

This is the closest you’re going to get to me being optimistic. If this team tanks again next season I don’t know so much I’d want to witness a year four

Hopefully Landry understands he was in the wrong and does reel it in in the future For Us !!!

  96. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just a hunch, we might let a lot of guys walk that might surprise us because we can replace them with cheaper options. Landry, James, Thomas and Timmons.
Landry = another reliable slot receiver
James = Davis might be a value guy
Thomas = a talented rookie TE
    Timmons = Anthony

We save a potential $35M here.

I’m all over the place with Landry, I know that. He’s an enigma. He’s Bess but better. Not sure he should be the focus of our offense moving forward.

  97. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Jesus, who are these coaches? There were a couple teams worse than Chicago offensively. Couldn’t we have hired their coaches? The kiss of death. They are “highly thought of around the league”. Oh boy.

  98. Looks like Belichick is really pissed at Kraft. Like I stated before, there was a difference of opinion among Kraft and Belichick as to who was responsible for the Pats success and Belichick wanted to prove it was him. So he went to Kraft and wanted to let go of Brady and start Jimmy G to prove he was the reason the Pats were successful. But Kraft blocked him and them Belichick went and traded away both qb’s.

Now it’s being said that Belichick has “encouraged” both of his coordinators to seek jobs elsewhere and it’s highly possible that Belichick himself decides to cut ties with the organization and leave the Pats flat.

I would love to see how the Pats fans trash him for walking away and leaving the Pats like that.

  99. This team has SOME talent on it but just not enough. When you look at the offensive line there’s not a whole hell of a lot to work with. I believe Tunsil is going to be solid at LT with the right coaching but Pouncey is on his last leg and we need to find a replacement there. MF made a good point about having some big guys alongside him to help him out and maybe that’s the route we take. I wouldn’t be against that.

But right now we’ve got nothing at either guard position and Larsen would just be another one of those short-term, stop-gap guys and better suited as depth than as a starter. I wouldn’t be against bringing James back on a cheaper deal. Just like with Tunsil, if we could get better coaching maybe James can get better at what he does. Makes too many mistakes.

That being said, we’ve really only got two young guys on the line to work with and an oft-injured, aging vet in Pouncey who may or may not be able to be relied upon for an entire season. I wouldn’t be thrilled about penciling in an udfa like Davis no matter how well he has played. You’ve got to be solid on the o-line and we just don’t have the talent there.
