The Wedge Scouting Report: Derrius Guice, LSU

Humans look at me and all they see is the alien technology and the ability to destroy entire galaxies.  Sure I am a successful intergalactic agent and I’ve killed millions of lie forms.  But I covet the really simple things too.

Alien-Greys-Shower-Curtain

Sometimes I don’t want to shoot a destructive cannon at a planet.  Sometimes I don’t want to deprive an entire alien race of their moon.

Sometimes I want the simple things….Sometimes I want to be a maniac!

ManiacWedge

Maniacs do it the simple way – They are scrappy!  Just like the LSU running back Derrius Guice.

Guice1

The Positives:  I have to admit, I fall in love with a prospect every season and this year – Guice is that guy.  This is hands down my favorite player in the 2018 draft.  Guice has it all: speed, power and more specifically determination.  Guice is a determined runner.

Actually Guice runs like a freaking maniac! Fighting for extra yards is a bit of a cliche when describing prospects.  So I will be a little more colorful, Guice doesn’t just fight, he runs like a John Wick fight scene.

Guice2

More Positives:  Guice was a backup to Leonard Fournette in 2016 and he outgained Fournette in 2016.  In 2016 he gained 1387 yards on the ground averaging 7.6 yards per carry to go along with 15 TDs.  He followed that up in 2017 with 1251 yards, 5.3 per carry and 11 TDs.

At 5-11, 218 pounds, he is not the biggest back in this draft but he might be one of the most physical.  But its not just about his fight, Guiice has breakaway speed too.

However, what really jumps out on film (besides his scrappiness) is his balance.  Guice makes cuts with ease barely losing stride and that helps medium runs turn into to big runs.

Guice4

The Negatives:  None.

Hah Hah, just kidding.  I really like this back but everyone has flaws I guess.  Guice may be too aggressive at times – he’s not a patient runner.  But to that end he hits the holes fast and accelerates quickly.

Only 32 career receptions.  But I caution you, he isn’t bad in the passing game, LSU just runs a lot.  Certainly he needs work in the passing game – but I would not call receiving a weakness.

Guice5

The Alien Dust:  He’s got a very sad story.  His father was murdered when he was 5 years old and grew up in a pretty tough part of Baton Rouge.  Guice tells people that he has something to prove to everyone.

I really think that attitude shows in his running style.  Guice has the kind of attitude we need to bring into Miami.  He reminds me of the qualities in Landry and Ajayi that propelled us to the postseason in 2016

I also think his name lends itself to some pretty good nicknames:  Miami Guice; or if we re-sign Landry we can call the duo Guice and Juice.

Guice3

The Alien Weapon of Destruction that best compares to Guice is simple, nothing to fancy but VERY LETHAL.  Its the Maniac’s Chef Knife!

Guice Knife

Watch his highlights here!

Lou – I’m not angry, or upset with you. I’m just pointing an observation I made about you. If you want to tell me I’m wrong about it, you certainly can, because you’re the only one who really knows whether I’m right. It just seems to me you enjoy when you become fond of a player that you admired watching playing college ball produce, more than even the success our team, the Dolphins. I would say it would be even more so if it were Tannehill who had great success and led the Dolphins to a championship, because you’ve long been a detractor of his, so therefore, his success would make you wrong. If you say I’m wrong, I’ll believe you.

    • I have no idea what you just said there but, okay. lol

We all had this conversation just a few short hours ago. Life is too short to take all of this too seriously so, yeah, I’m a fan of the Phins but I don’t live or die by what they accomplish. I enjoy watching a winning team and I enjoy playing amateur GM so if I have a few players that I “cherry pick” in the draft and then follow them in the league and root for their success why does it bother anyone. More important things to be concerned about.

I would much rather see the Phins win games and I’d actually rather they be a dominant team that had one of them there “dynasties” so I could gloat about my fav team. Unfortunately, that’s not happened any time in the last _______yrs so I gloat about my guys instead.

    • Ya wanna know what I think is even more fucked up. People who were rooting for the Eagles to beat the Pats because of the obvious reason but they were rooting against Ajayi because they were Dolphins fans and didn’t want Ajayi to have success with another team.

      That’s fucking twisted.

Doesn’t sound right, but the experts say that if you pull over in the break-down lane at night…..do not keep your lights on, including your hazards. Drunks apparently will just head for whatever lights they see.

Little worse than last year actually, but not by much. And 4th from the bottom seems unfair, but guess it is about SB rather than total wins.

I knew he didn’t play against us, I just wasn’t sure on the other games. Hypothetically speaking if we take away Gronk’s 2 TDs last night, didn’t NE score around 20 points? That just had me thinking how important Gronk is to this offense. …A lot.
    ————
I think you’re overall point is SOLID.

I also think we need to get a TE like Gronk, AND find a TE-killer to stop Gronk.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Lou, M – Funny thing though, the Eagles did exactly what I wanted them to do, win the game, without Ajayi being a major factor, so you and the like couldn’t come on here and gloat about it. We’ll see how much the Eagles value Ajayi now that his contract is up, and it’s time to actually pay him. I’ve read here countless times how Ajayi being traded was the reason we were 6-10. If you all actually believe that, then you didn’t watch our games this season, the ones with Ajayi, and the ones without him.

    • Look at what the Eagles did on offense. They utilized not one, not two, but three rb’s. Three. 3!

      The Dolphins used 1. ONE!

They fail to utilize the talent they have on the team. They fail to develop the talent they have on the team. If you want to believe the team was better off without Ajayi then go ahead and live in your fantasy world but how much better would a Phins offense be if it had the hard, angry running of Ajayi coupled with the slithery and elusive running of Drake instead of just relying on one guy.

We all saw in ’16 what Ajayi was capable of doing in the offense and then, for some reason, Gase decided that his ego was more important than the success of the the offense or the team.

When you’re a coach, a leader, a manager and you’re developing talent you need to check your ego at the door and you need to stop your personal issues you may have with an individual from getting in the way of the success of the entire organization.

And I know this because I’ve lived it.

I have ZERO INTEREST now in Jay Ajayi… the season is officially over. All we can do now is hope we can draft a replacement for him… IT’S NOW OFFICIALLY DRAFT SEASON!!! 😀

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Great! Glad to hear that – I hope so too M. I hope we really have a good season to look forward to, and our draft and free agency gives us all some promise for just that

    • Look at what the Eagles did in the offseason. Now compare it with what we did:

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Does anyone here other than myself think Mychal Kendricks should have been given a chance to cover Gronk? I thought Darby, even when he had good position was too small to stop Gronk from making a catch.

M13 — for sure such a hard drop has to be something to pay attention to at least. Right now am happy I didn’t dive in as hard as I could have, even if the loss still hurts.

  12. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Lou – Our team has to a much better job of utilizing their players. Whether it’s the coaches not using talent we have, or the coaches not playing guys because they aren’t prepared properly, or because the FO didn’t give the coach the right players, something needs to change.

    • rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

      All of the above?

    • Definitely. And I have to agree with others who said we’re not going to have any consistency if we keep changing things too often. Hopefully this coaching staff is tweaked to where it needs to be and it will stay together long enough to get the consistency it needs. Take a good 3 yrs or so for a staff to really jell and see everything come together.

stuff like you see in LA with the Chargers gets people, including myself, all hot and bothered for the instant gratification. I think if we stay the course and try not to get stupid and just add some key pieces in FA and the draft and then do it again next year it’s better than trying to make the big splash that doesn’t have any staying power.

I’m in for the long haul; not for the instant gratification. I don’t want a playoff berth one year followed by 3 yrs of mediocrity. So, here’s hoping the offseason and draft gets us closer to where we need to be.

  13. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I also think we need to get a TE like Gronk, AND find a TE-killer to stop Gronk.

That is the 3,000,000 dollar question!

Seems to me the biggest hits were on Bitcoin and the like. I hope David is doing alright.

    • you’re right about the corrections. they happen all the time and it’s too difficult to try and figure out when it’s going to happen. good rule of thumb is to take 10% at a minimum and start moving it into a safer investment on a periodic basis. you can do it once a month or every other month but move at least some of it. take your profits.

when the market comes down start getting back in. if you’re making periodic investments like with a 401k you’re getting in at the bottom with the new contributions so when the market comes back, which it will, you are in even better shape then before.

a lot of people panic and pull everything out when it hits it’s bottom and don’t get back in until it comes back. then they LOST.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

100% agree with ya here, Prof Lou!

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Lou — similar concept, but a self regulating one , is to always keep a certain percentage of your investments in stocks. Say 60%. Stocks go up and you sell. Stocks go down and you buy. What you need to do to keep the percentage constant. And particularly if you are in the long-term…..you end up with a bunch more stock at the end cause you have been buying them low. And not like I made that up. People like John Bogle of Vanguard did.

  15. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think the closest thing we could get to Gronk as a TE is… wait for it (Rockphin!)… DALLAS GOEDERT.

  16. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Outside-the-box thought of the day…

Take Ian Thomas, TE, Indiana, and convert him to LB. This is unrealistic, but Ian’s got the size, speed, and ball skills to compete with Gronk.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

That’s NOT to say that Ian Thomas is a STUD at TE. I just feel his skill-set would be the perfect DEFENSE (in a ‘reactionary’ role) to Gronk.

There is a limit on the number of links in one post, I think it’s 3 but I’m going from memory so that could be wrong. It’s to prevent spam and is what was recommended when this was set up. I don’t know what the problem is. Maybe Twice can check it. It’s getting old that if there’s an issue it’s us blocking or censoring someone and not just some glitch or techy problem that we don’t know what is causing it. Get over yourself. I have seen posts that are hung up and I don’t know why. They don’t have 3 links or anything else that I can see. Baffling to me. If they’re recent I’ll go ahead and clear them. If old there’s not really a point.

I know I’ve never blocked anyone. I think Home was blocked early on and Jetssucks a few months ago and that probably should have happened long ago. Other than that, no one is blocked. All of this really would take time and effort that I really don’t have and I think that’s true for all of us. This isn’t our job. It’s meant to be fun. And we get accused of this stuff on top of it. Awesome.

I have no clue why. If I did something on my end or what…..I probably did but wouldn’t know it. Lol

I’m not inclined to change the way things are done here in terms of posting – I’m pretty sure that’s uniform for all blogs that use WordPress

  68. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I saw an article on a different Dolphins site about 5 players the Dolphins should trade. While some of it is unrealistic, I can agree in principle to trading 3 of the 5

    The full list is . . .

    1) Cam Wake
    2) Mike Pouncey
    3) Jordan Phillips
    4) Ryan Tannehill
    5) Devante Parker

If we could get value back for Pouncey, Wake and Parker, I’d trade them. Rather than have them retire the following year, or lose them to injury, (Wake and Pouncey), I’d trade them and get something for them. As for Parker, if someone was willing to give up a nice pick, or player, I’d have to consider it. I don’t think anyone would trade for Tannehill now, and I don’t think Phillips could generate enough interest either.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The only one on that list I think can generate the value in trade to the value they bring the team is Phillips

Maybe tannehill if some one wants to give up a lot for a qb

Pouncey won’t get anything in return. We probably have to waive him. Parker probably won’t generate good compensation and we are probably better off taking what we can from him on the field – if he has 50 catches next year that’s probably worth more than a late day 2 or day 3 pick

Forget about wake. He’s too old to get value from and even at his age there are times when he’s unstoppable.

I don’t understand the constant need to makeover the team that some fans make arguments for

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You know, I really don’t know much about him other than hearing his name mentioned on WFAN when they were discussing who was in the Yankees lineup. You’d be better telling me what you think? LOL

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He’s a decent hitter with power. He doesn’t hit for average, so he’s another guy in the lineup that’s not a high OBP player. He’s a Toms River NJ kid. He actually played on the LLWS team from Toms River. He’s 32 now, he played for the Yankees last season. He played for the Reds most of his career. He’s hit 40 HR in a season (2016), but he’s another all or nothing hitter, so while he’ll drive in some runs, he’s not going to hit .280. He’s very good defensively though, so that’s a plus

  77. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Tim, Rock’s posts were in spam. First I ‘unspammed’ them and I thought that would be it. Then had to go approve them all. So he is correct in saying they aren’t posting. I have no idea why.

Patriots’ assistant QB coach Jerry Schuplinski is expected to join Josh McDaniels’ staff in Indianapolis, per source.

Also means Patriots’ WR coach Chad O’Shea is in play to become New England’s OC.

Food for thought. The Eagles had the same odds as the Dolphins for making it to the SB before the season started at 50-1.

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, yeah I looked at Todd Frazier’s stats. For some reason I don’t even remember him being on the Reds. I don’t know players on other teams very well anymore like I used to, other than some of the obvious guys.

So what’s the deal with David Wright?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Poor guy is a shell of his former self. I don’t think he’ll ever play again. It’s a shame.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Is he officially done? I feel bad for him too. Before his back issues, he still had a lot of baseball ahead of him. But everyone and I’m sure even him, knows he won’t last even close to a season.

  85. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I can’t wait to see where Kirk Cousins ends up… the anticipation is building. PLEASE let him go to a top-10 Draft team, pushing more talent to us @ R1P11.

By the way, Little Mike Florio (take him for what he’s worth) is of the opinion that Drew Brees returning to the Saints isn’t a given. He’s stated that if the Saints low-ball Brees with their initial offer, he’s going to bolt due to feeling insulted. IF that would happen, things will get all the more interesting.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

But on second thought… maybe we DON’T want Cousins to go to a top-10 Draft team. Maybe teams over-reaching for a QB early would push more talent down to us @ R1P11.

Piggy – Do you think Pouncey wouldn’t have value because of his health issues, or because of his play?

    *****

    Both
I am surprised we haven’t waived him
Maybe you get a day 3 pick if a team feels like they are on the cusp

But who thinks they are a center away from a championship?!?!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think we as fans undervalue Pouncey. I think there are NFL teams that would love to have him. Question is if he can pass a physical, as far as his future prognosis with his hips.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Well I would love it if we got value for him

And it seems like the FO and coaches like him
        So maybe we undervalue him

        But I’m skeptical

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He just finished a season in which he started all 16 games. Why would this be the season you move on from him? Maybe start to think about the future center to have waiting in the wings, but I don’t see the team releasing him this year.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think there is a cost vs value issue on Pouncey despite his 16 starts

But…I admit I don’t love opening new holes by discarding guys

  87. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

IMO, we want either of Tremaine Edmunds or Quenton Nelson pushed down to us @ R1P11… that would be PERFECT. And while I’m not in love with Roquan Smith (but he’s good), he would ideally get pushed down to us as well.

Yeah, pitching and defense. We need Conforto healthy, and quick. Also, Gonzalaez will likely at some point be replaced by Dominic Smith, and probably sooner than later, unless A-Gon has a hot start.

I think that sometimes happens if some one is trying to log on from a new device or has just cleared there cache

My guess is that bc we set up the blog so we have to approve people on their initial post, that if the blog doesn’t indentify that person as the same from a new device or for some other reasons, the post will be treated as spam until it is approved

I’ve not witnessed this on any other site I’ve come across. I’ll even click on the latest time marker on the latest comment, and it STILL restores me half way up the page upon refreshing.
