TE – The position that has been a vacant hole for so many years. One oddity, if you weren’t aware, is that Tight End, besides Kicker and Punter is the only skill position that the Dolphins have NEVER invested in a 1st RD pick for. While I’m not advocating the Dolphins select a TE with the #11 pick, they better make it happen with either the #42 pick, or at the very least, the #73, but preferably the #42 pick. In the meantime, let’s take a look at who’s available at TE in free agency. Last week, we looked at WR, this week, it’s the big fellas, the TE’s.
Jimmy Graham 6’7 260 31YO

A TE can’t really replace Jarvis Landry, or can he? This year, in SEA, in his walk year of free agency, Graham’s stats more resembles Jarvis Landry’s than at any other point of his career. Graham reeled in 10 TD’s this year, his highest total since ’14 (He had 16 TD’s in ’13). Here’s where it even more closely resembles Landry, 57 receptions for 520 yards, for a 9.1 YPR average, the first time in Graham’s career below double digits. Is the big guy slowing down? Eh, probably a little bit, but SEA just didn’t have a great year this year, the run game was a colossal bust. FA Eddie Lacy was a huge disappointment, and the bevy of RB’s behind him were awful, so it all fell on Russell Wilson, who managed to have a phenomenal year, despite the run game woes.
Graham is 31, and will be going into his 9th season. He’s played most games every season, and isn’t really an injury prone player. He’s one of the biggest red zone threats in the game, and if you compare him to what we’ve had here the last decade or so, he’s ALL WORLD! Spotrac has Graham’s market value at $6.7M, and I’m going to say right now, I think they’re low on that. Think of it this way Dolphins fans, if we do lose Landry, which you all know I will hate, Graham would definitely help this team recover from that loss.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins 6’6 262 25YO

ASJ had a resurrection of his career last season with the rival New York Jets. I know pretty well, I had to pick him up in FF in 2 leagues after I lost my TE to injury. After disappearing from the NFL landscape during 2 forgettable seasons with the Tampa Bay Bucs, the former 2nd RD pick was cut in the middle of his 3rd season after his 2nd DUI arrest since 2013. He got serious about his life, slimmed down 15 lbs, got his mind and body focused on football, and had a nice comeback season. It wasn’t outstanding, but 2 TD’s were overturned by replay, one against the Patriots (Of course!), and one against Seattle. ASJ finished with 50 catches for 357 yards and 3 TD’s. Not eye popping, but he showed a lot of promise after being out of football for a while. A highly touted prospect, ASJ seems to be on the right track, and I’d take a look at him for sure. Spotrac projects his market value at $4.1M, which is a bargain compared to Julius Thomas.
************************************************************************************
Benjamin Watson 6’3 255 37YO

Yes, Watson is older than Gase. Not really, but it’s close. It would have to be a short contract, but joking aside, Watson has had 2 very productive seasons his last 2 years, one for the Ravens, the other 2 years ago with the Saints. Players don’t usually get better after 35, but Watson has had his 2 best years of his career. Watson caught 61 passes for 521 yards and 4 TD’s. He’s a smart veteran player with a good work ethic, and looks to be in fantastic physical shape. My thinking would be to sign Watson, but also draft a TE early, and let things happen as they will. At worst, if the rookie struggles, you have a veteran TE who can fill the spot, and also mentor the young TE. Seems logical, especially at the right price, which should be around $2M per.
*************************************************************************************
Virgil Green 6’3 248 29YO

Yeah, I know, it’s slim pickin’s out there folks. Sure, 7 years ago in the 2011 NFL Draft, both M13 and I were all about Virgil Green, but in 2018, after 7 seasons in the NFL, Green is not a savior. He’s more of a role player, and probably a 2nd TE, which is why I’ll be discussing Anthony Fasano shortly. back to Green, he started all 16 games last season for the Broncos, but had very little on his resume as such. Green finished with 14 receptions for 191 yards and 1 TD. That’s a nice 13.6 YPR, but it’s such a small body of work, it’s hard to get excited about it. He’s an athletic player, definitely undersized at 6’3, but part of the mystique of Green is he played college ball at Nevada, with a certain controversial QB. Ahhh, now you remember who Virgil Green is! Virgil excelled at the combine, running a 4.64, jumped out of the park with a 42.5″ vertical and a 130″ broad jump, a 6.90 cone and 11.63 60 YD shuttle all showed great athleticism and explosiveness, but it just hasn’t translated to the NFL. It happens.
************************************************************************************
Anthony Fasano 6’4 255 33YO

We all know Anthony Fasano well, Gigi’s Italian Stallion who came back home last season after a 4 year hiatus. Always a fan favorite. Fasano has that old school grit, and will even make a nice catch here and there when called on. he’s a great in line blocker, but he’s a 2nd TE, not a #1 guy. This seems to be the theme in this year’s free agency, once you get past top 2 or 3. No reason to post his stats, but I will anyway, 12 catches for 107 yards and 1 TD. The stats don’t do Fasano justice, because he’s a great teammate, as I mentioned, a great blocker, and a fan favorite, so his 12 catches don’t portray his story fairly.
*************************************************************************************
Trey Burton 6’3 228 26YO

Burton is an undersized, very undersized TE. He’s one of those tweeners, who BTW, is benefiting hugely by by being on a SB winning team, and being the #2 to one of the best pass catching TE’s in football, Zach Ertz, along with the complete arsenal of weapons such as Alshon Jeffery, Nelson Agholor, Torrey Smith, LeGarrette Blount, Jay Ajayi, etc . . . Burton caught 23 passes for 248 yards and 5 TD’s. I don’t think any NFL team will be looking at Burton as their #1 starting TE, yet for some odd reason, Spotrac has him valued at $7M per season. Burton caught 23 passes for 248 yards and 5 TD’s. As far as I’m concerned, I’d take that $7M and give it to Landry to keep in aqua and orange, but that’s just me. he would have to be a complimentary player, like a slot receiving TE, so forget $7M, maybe at half that, I’d consider him, maybe.
**********************************************************************************
Ed Dickson 6’4 244 30YO

Dickson has had a decent career with both the Ravens and Panthers. This past season, when starter Greg Olsen went down with a broken leg, Dickson got more of a chance, yet still finished with pedestrian numbers, 30 receptions 437 yards and 1 TD. he had a nice 14.6 YPR, but 1 TD as a starter for 12 games is disappointing. Maybe it’s the QB in Carolina, who knows? (LOL!) Once again, Dickson is not going to be your #1 starting TE, he’s more of a 2nd string guy.
***********************************************************************************
So there’s your 6, oops SEVEN possibilities at TE for us in 2018. I obviously can’t count! I didn’t forget that Antonio Gates is out there, or Tyler Eifert for that matter. Gates should finish his career as a Charger, and I think he probably will. He’s maintained he doesn’t want to retire, he would like to win a SB. Tyler Eifert eerily reminds me of Jordan Cameron, and I don’t have to remind you how that went down, or how strongly I was against it. He’s a talented player, maybe better than Jordan Cameron, but believe it or not, not as durable. Eifert has managed one season with 15 games played, and then in 4 seasons after that, just 24 games. I wouldn’t even look in his direction, been there, done that. I would have loved to have included former CHI TE Zach Miller, but after that catastrophic leg injury, in which he dislocated his knee, and and actually severed his popliteal artery, and nearly had to have his leg amputated, he may never play football again. The 33 YO TE desires to play again in the NFL, but he has quite the uphill struggle ahead. If there’s any TE you feel was wrongly omitted, let me know.

Barry Sanders ran behind a lot of so-so OLs. RBs can succeed w/o your OL being good…so can your offense. It’s just that it’s so much easier when your OL does their job well. The OL sets the tone for the whole team. If they’re winning, you got a good shot. If they’re not, it’s just much harder to do what you want. It makes everybody else’s job easier. I think as an OL you always feel like it’s on you to win the game.
^^^
Great example, Barry fuckin Sanders? The guy was a grasshopper. I’m here, now I’m over here. LOL
Right! But… there’s only going to be ONE Barry Sanders.
So I hate to deflate Pig’s RB dreams, but it generally runs through the O-Line.
Tim,
Yeah, but i’m lying around with a cold, and he was the lowest hanging fruit. Lol
LOL, the dude had hyper space.
https://twitter.com/helengrantley/status/962398479564894208
Sad
But there are getting to be more judges who look at the facts more than the clothes!
That might just be a tadbit …. just a teensy weensy bit cynical.
Thing that gets me about women these days is they’re always looking for something better to come along. Too much with the “club image” shit.
Everybody’s attention span is measured in minutes these.days.
As opposed to the multiple wives and mistresses on the side era. LOL
Jeez
Barry Sanders?
He QUIT the NFL because Detroit would never get him any blockers. That’s a fact and a quote.
No QB either and they ran the run and shoot for years.
We aren’t really picking between OL and RBs guys
I’ve been saying since the get go focus on build Ng a good running game
That includes improving our OL
The argument I’m hearing from people is that we shouldn’t take a RB at all in the first couple of days in the draft bc there are a few late round successful qbs and free agents
I think that’s a silly argument
Most of the leagues better RBs are early picks
That’s just reality
No one ever says “you don’t need to take a Qb early bc Tom Brady is a 6th round pick”
But with RBs the willingness to take you shot with a late round pick or an UDFA – it’s a little shocking to me
Signing the next Arian Foster is like winning the lottery
You refuse to the love the Drake, that’s the problem.
I’d be okay with a RB in the 3rd or 4th. But no earlier at the expense of a top OL and TE in the first 2 rounds. That’s just me. I really think we need that if they’re available.
If you are really true to BPA – a RB will be in the radar whether or not it comes at the expense of another position
I said if they’re available meaning they match the pick. If we get OL, TE and RB in the first 3 rounds in any order that make us better I won’t care.
I prefer RBs on 2nd or less rd contracts you can have for 4 years without playing them big money because few teams want to pay RBs big money. Drake is on year 3 of his 4 year 3rd rd deal so that it the ideal situation.
I had heard the Sanders had so much respect for Payton he didn’t want to break his record
That too and he just wasn’t into anymore.
For the record – Nelson is the pick I want to make at 11
Me too but I see him mocked top 10 a lot. I would love Nelson and Andrews 1 and 2 but not sure either will be there. I can see Andrews going 1st rd maybe even as high as the teens.
I also think a player like Will Clap (that you mocked earlier) makes a lot of sense too
It’s not a string draft for OTs – I don’t think we should reach for one,
But interior OL, even if Nelson is gone early or out FO refuses to take an OG at 11, there will be opportunities in the 2nd and 3rd round
The big question is how many OL we need to draft?
I think anymore than 2 in those first 5 picks is too many
Agreed. If we sign a starter in FA then two max and even if not probably two rooks max. To hit on two to start is a reach so three is even less unless you really nail it. Larsen, Davis etc. can be solid as other options.
3 rookies on an OL would probably be ugly
I don’t know if we keep James
But between James, Larsen and Davis we shouldn’t need to start 3 rookies especially if we add a vet that can come Pete to start in free agency
Former All-Pro running back Barry Sanders says he quit the NFL because he was exhausted and frustrated that the Detroit Lions’ front office did not seem willing to build a winning team.
The realization that management no longer cared about winning “slammed me harder than any linebacker had ever hit me in my entire career,” Sanders says. “That realization trivialized everything I did during the off-season to prepare myself. It trivialized everything I dreamed about from the time I was a kid in Wichita …”
http://www.espn.com/nfl/news/story?id=1662343
So not just OL but team. QB was a big issue as well.
Prayers for the Hulk to smash cancer! Take care Ken!
I also wouldn’t be against trading up a few spots in some early rounds to land the guys you covet. We have 8 picks and I wouldn’t care if we ended up with just 5 picks that we feel will make more of an impact. Like many of us have said, we have a lot of depth guys fighting for jobs.
We really need to see what the roster looks like after FA though. That could change a lot. If we sign a proven starting guard in FA, Nelson is no longer a must have but maybe more of a holy shit he’s there at #11. Tannenbaum said the goal is to have a team you can play with before the draft so all options are open. I agree with that approach. Lou does not because he thinks that means only stopgap but that’s not the case.
I think we can go into the season with what we have on defense loaded with young and prime players with the expectations that they get better both individually and with chemistry, not worse. If you don’t believe in that than this offseason FA and draft means nothing for the future either.
Piggy, a player like Clapp can compete at guard and be insurance behind Pouncey. That’s why I selected him in the 3rd because the value was there.
He may be this years Elfein
I think Price can do that too
Yes the same idea. A guy who has more upside than Brendel and Larsen.
As for James, I don’t see us paying him as the 3rd highest paid RT at this time. If we can sign him long-term at a lower rate fine, if not, it may be an open competition at RT between 3-4 guys. RT is not a premium position.
I think it is different now trying to predict the draft since FA was moved ahead. There is so much the Dolphins need to take care of prior to the draft, it is hard for me to predict anything.
All my early prediction usually end up being way off
You mean you don’t think they will take a running back in every round?
I’m not giving up that dream!
Trotters up for RBs!!!
Thank you Bookman. Good to see you back here
Glad to be back.
Bookman, I don’t think we need so much. We tend to want to upgrade every position in the offseason. We don’t “need” a starting QB, RB, LT, C or WR. We don’t “need” a starting DT, DE, LB, CB or S. We “want” better players at every position but it’s not realistic. LOL
I agree with this. I think our needs are a lot less than they were maybe 2-3 years ago. All I want is a great OL, dominate TOP, and hold all teams to 3 and out on every possession (or get a turnover) All they have to do is add players that will accomplish that….piece of cake….lol
LOL!!!
Our defense was very young and new last year and finished 14th in rush,16th in pass and 16th overall with minimal support from the offense. Gase knows this and has said it. He’s an offensive guy and the weak link is his specialty. He’s gotta be losing his mind. LOL
Tim,
I think Gase will want to draft offense, like you eluded to, he had to be embarrassed how the offense looked. I wish he would just ask us….I mean it is easy…fix the OL, get a TE that Is a threat, get RB depth, and either keep Landry, or figure out the alternative plan for WR.
There’s a lot going on with the offense. Coaches – OC, OL, RB, WR, and former WR coach Jefferson now Asst. HC/Offense. Gase is not staying status quo. Let’s hope his moves are right. 🙂
Tim,
Except you’ve been saying that for over a decade!!! When, man? When? Lol
Just a fan hoping for it to someday happen. LOL
Here’s a really good draft from USA Today. (only went 4 rounds)
Miami Dolphins
1 OLB Tremaine Edmunds VTech
2 OG Braden Smith Auburn
3 RB Nick Chubb Georgia
4a Edge Chad Thomas U Miami
4b TE Durham Smythe Notre Dame
That’s a great draft
But Smythe is kind of a blocking TE
Would be good to get a good receiving threat
Would this defense not have potential?
LDE Wake/Malveaux
LDT Suh/Taylor
RDT Godchaux/Phillips
RDE Branch/Harris
SOLB Anthony/Allen
MLB McMillan/Allen
WOLB Alonso/Hewitt?
CB Howard
CB Tankersley
CB Lippett
CB/NB McCain
S Jones
S McDonald
It’s a solid group with some good players and upside. Offense!!! Start scoring.
I can’t fucking stand when you make sense.
LMAO!!! I’m silly like that. Silly indeed.
Our secondary is pretty good
I would like to see Harris’s start
Also what does awake have left
I think Anthony and Macmillan can be pieces to build on along with Harriss, Tankersly and Howard
There were times when Alonso just was unable to do the job in 2017 – he is the weak part
But maybe with McMillan and Anthony and lesser demands he can be a better player – he does have a knack for impact plays
Tim,
I hear ya. Your optimism is always refreshing.
I agree. I like Tim’s optimism, and to me it makes sense because we have no control over what happens, it will happen anyway, might as well be positive, being negative will not change anything and is just…..well….silly….lol
🙂
Players who we probably move on from especially at their cap are James, Timmons and Thomas.
One thing is what is Timmons deal? Did he lose some of this money for going AWOL?
http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/lawrence-timmons-3609/
We can’t cut that. We need to use him in a rotation and get the most out of him even in a week by week role. Belichick will go with 3 core LBs and 2-3 others depending on game plan for a specific opponent.
Timmons lost the guarantee. I have no problem going into the season with Hewitt, Allen and either Hull or some other young guy on the defensive side rather than continuing down the old path
bookman,
Well, lots of us get emotional about stuff we have no control over…that’s just humans, but I do wish my brain worked more like Tim’s. Lol
Lol….be careful what you ask for…you might just start saying nothing but….”ne, ne, ne, “ lol
Look at talent, age and upside. If that doesn’t pan out we lose. I’m not into that shit! LOL
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NS7Gkv4NNA
Silly, silly, silly
It should be an offensive heavy draft. That unit was HORRIBLE last year. After BPA @ 11 then it’s time to grab TEs, OLs and another skill whether it’s RB or QB.
Also depends what happens in FA, of course.
Yeah, heavy offense for sure. We can add some depth on defense in FA and maybe a draft pick or two. The offense needs a jolt of a lot of new to add some promise to what we already have. New coaching changes on offense and new up and coming personnel before FA and the draft happen. Gase said fuck this, it’s not staying this way. Now it’s up to a much younger coaching staff but guys who have paid their dues. We’ll see if it’s a good mix.
On defense new DL and DB coaches.
2016 was a cool season but 2017 was not ideal on so many levels. 2018 is where Gase says what do I see and what do we need? It’s not a lot, it’s specific in a few areas.
Maybe next season everyone won’t go down before season starts too….
Right, there are reasons, it’s not always excuses. Shit happens.
I remember when Marino went down in 1994 and Scott Mitchell was the backup and played pretty well. Even then some fans were ready to trade Marino for picks and go with Mitchell. That’s how quickly the fanbase will turn and be fickle. And that was with f’n Marino!!! Patience is sometimes a virtue. 🙂
Lol.
They do some of the same stupid shit here with A. Rod. Even tho all these years his back ups have been shit. It was hilarious when they were calling for Matt Flynn.
Here’s your we want to run the ROCK draft!
Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 11: Orlando Brown, OT, Oklahoma (B+)
Round 2 Pick 10: Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, OLB, Oklahoma (A)
Round 3 Pick 9: Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia (A)
Round 4 Pick 11: Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn State (A+)
Round 4 Pick 30: Deontay Burnett, WR, Southern California (A+)
Round 6 Pick 9: Kurt Benkert, QB, Virginia (A)
Round 7 Pick 5: Dimitri Flowers, FB, Oklahoma (A+)
Round 7 Pick 11: Isaiah Prince, OT, Ohio State (A+)
Chubb will pound it for sure. 5’10 228 is a big back.
and Brown is like 6’7 340. sheesh … get that guy for RT if Jawuan walks.
Peyton would not even talk football in the visitor’s locker room at Gillette. Now this:
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/02/08/eagles-long-snapper-team-ran-fake-walk-through-in-the-event-pats-were-watching/amp/
Life is too short to be optimistic. That’s what I always say.
LOL fitting! 😉
was one hell of a draft up there thought. I could eat my words if we got a draft like that.
I like Wyatt Teller at OG as a steal in the 7th.
Bills are being put out there as one of the potential landing spots for Mayfield and they would need to use their two firsts to get ahead of the Jets IMO in order to land him.
If he’s there when the Jets are picking he’s most likely a Jet. He fits them perfectly with his attitude and the New York area.
I’m really liking Goedert’s teammate Jake Wieneke as a wr target in this draft. Don’t know where he’d go because it’s hard to get a fix on him but he’s an interesting prospect.
Pound the Rock Draft
1 OG Quentin Nelson 6’5 329 Notre Dame
2 OG Will Hernandez 6’3 330 UTEP
3 RB Kalen Ballage 6’3 230 Arizona State
4a TE Durham Smythe 6’4 245 Notre Dame
4b Slot WR Jaylen Samuels 5’11 236 NC State
6 FB Dmitri Flowers 6’2 239 Oklahoma
7a RT Joseph Noteboom 6’5 332 TCU
7b OT/OG Cody O’Connell 6’8 354 Washington State
I would like that
GOING TO TAKE MRS. OD to see “The Shape of Water” at a local cinema. Near perfect weather for my only weekend off this month. We’ve already spent some time outdoors today, and will spend more time outside after the movie. High near 80, low in the mid-60’s.
It may not be paradise, but it sure beats every other state I’ve ever lived in during the month of February. We are so fortunate.
They made a movie to show the Shape of Water?
Isn’t water ummm flat?
oh
No
Wait.
That’s the world, right?
Glad to hear your better half is doing well enough to sit through a movie……awesome for her!
Lou have you looked into Gallup from CSU?
He’s a scrapper!
not much.
These are my 3 favorite WR’s
Anthony Miller, WR, Memphis
Height: 5-11. Weight: 190.
Projected 40 Time: 4.52.
Deontay Burnett*, WR, USC
Height: 6-0. Weight: 170.
Projected 40 Time: 4.47.
Michael Gallup, WR, Colorado State
Height: 6-0. Weight: 198. Arm: 30.88. Hand: 9.13.
Projected 40 Time: 4.56.

Read more at http://walterfootball.com/draft2018WR.php#zfO2rcbP7WmQk7GT.99
good list but I want my WRs to be faster than 4.45 and bigger than 6’1 200.
I don’t think we need any WRs this year. We have a ton of them already.
I want the blue collar guys, the guys who will fight for balls, the guys who will fight for position, run great routes to get separation, fight thru tackles and block downfield. Speed is great but I’ll take these things above great speed. Nothing wrong with a 4.5 guy if he can do all that.
So many folks on here seem to like Benkert. I know a bit about him. He’s from near here.
His high school lost to Naples High in the district playoff or something like that.
He’s a skinny kid, but he does have a live arm.
However, he is wild and hasn’t got a clue how to play QB. He’d be a turnover machine in the pros.
IMHO
I wish him well, but I would not trust him as my QB.
ding, ding. time for me to ring in on that one.
1. he’s not wild
2. he’s a solid prospect for a team that doesn’t need a starter in year 1; like Miami
3. if you watched his game against Miami you would see that he’s got more than a clue as to how to play the position. watch how he looks defenders off .
just one play as a for instance, he’s got a rb off to the left and he looks at him and flicks the ball out to a wr that’s about 8 yds down the field. he’s very accurate throwing on the run, including when he’s moving to his left. I haven’t seen one qb in this draft who can drop dimes moving to their left like he can.
OK, if you say so, i stand corrected.
I just think he loses his mind a lot in the pocket. …
he did break all Matt Schaub’s records, hope that’s not the kiss of pick-6 death.
It’s just my opinion. I go off what I see with my own eyes and when I watch a guy I watch him over and over to make sure I don’t miss anything. Like Jahn says I’m not a scout and I don’t do this for a living so take it for what it’s worth.
I also don’t watch highlights because they don’t show those negative plays you’re talking about. I’ve seen the negatives and just feel that if he gets with a good coach that works with him on those things he can turn the corner and become one of the better qb’s at the next level.
let me correct myself on one thing. there were times where he did seem to get overwhelmed out there and didn’t play as well as he should have. when I watch those games it was like he was trying to do too much or he wasn’t comfortable out there because he doesn’t have the talent around him to help him out; either on the offensive line or at the skill positions.
that’s why he needs to sit and learn for a year and can’t be thrown into the fray immediately. however, I don’t see that happening because he won’t be taken for that purpose. he’s a draft and develop prospect.
Wyoming,
Maybe we should take a “Gallup” poll.
Lou
gotcha
He can sling it for sure.
and gase is supposed to be good with QBs.
just concerned that we might need somebody soon if Ryan goes down or is not 100%.
Confession: I’ve not scouted a single WR in this draft class. Why? I don’t believe we need one.
Now that doesn’t mean I’ve not taken notice of certain WRs, but I know I’m not knowledgeable enough to have a solid opinion of one this year… at least not yet.
I’ve trusted Dbolt for YEARS now when it comes to WRs… dude KNOWS what he’s talking about. If he says Michael Gallup is his favorite WR, I’m checking him out!
He likes him!
We’ve talked about him on twitter
I KNOW, Bro! That’s why I brought this up!
No matter your politics, this is pretty funny. Like a good-natured hit chant at a high school football game. And yeah it came out after the Dutch swept some speed skating event.
https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/QlkvJ76oZJvuhxnXQyRizg–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjtzbT0xO3c9ODAw/http://media.zenfs.com/en/homerun/feed_manager_auto_publish_494/507ab5c9fadb54c449cc7f5084201de6
Lets see if can get to work this way.
DAMN! I know it’s just his highlight reel (not to be confused with TAPE), but Michael Gallup looks INCREDIBLE! I see a little bit of Jarvis Landry in him!
If your a Wyoming fan you will hate him as much as we hate Amandola!!
No doubt!
And by the way! It hurts my feeling that you had to go to Dbolt to verify what I said!!!!
LOL! Your street cred is only going UP, my man!
Wyoming,
Since you are the one who has seen more of Josh Allen than the rest of us, tell me 3 things about him that you think he needs to improve upon. I ask this in all sincerity.
I think there’s a really good possibility that he’s there for us @ R1P11.
And if he’s there for us and Quenton Nelson is already off the board, I think I’d pull the trigger!
Wyoming,
Here’s my list of 3 things Josh Allen can improve upon…
1) Experience. He’s a bit green, but that means his ceiling is potentially enormous.
2) Touch passing. But funny enough, we’ve already seen him grow rather quickly at the Senior Bowl in this department. He’s still growing.
3) Mechanics. The way I see it, he’s all over the place. I’ve compared him to a young Phillip Rivers in this department. But he STILL gets the job done! Mechanics can be polished up by NFL coaching.
In short, I think Josh Allen can and WILL improve upon these 3 items at the next level. The reason I ask YOU this question is because you’ve UNDOUBTEDLY seen more of him than I have. Thus, I VALUE your opinion, man!

From @AdamSchefter and me: Eagles OC Frank Reich has emerged as the favorite to become the next head coach of the @Colts but a contract understandably has to be fully executed after the Josh McDaniels experience, per league sources.
Yea, during Senior Bowl week I came away impressed with Gallup. The 3 WRs that caught my eye that week were Gallup, Hamilton, and Chalk. Though I really wasn’t focused in on the position as a whole.
*Chark… the fastest WR in this year’s Draft.
Yea, I think it was the darn auto correct.
Chark
Rgs,
I DO like DaeSean Hamilton. As a PSU fan, I can tell ya that he’s pretty darn good!
He seems like a great guy off the field, too.
Taking care of his autistic older brother.
Yeah, man! That’s one helluva great story! LUV hearing that!
And so I’ve figured it out, LOL @ myself…
IF we want a shot at the BPA QB at R1P11, we WANT Kirk Cousins to sign with a top-10 draft team. This possibly gives us a shot at Baker Mayfield or Josh Allen.
IF we want a shot at the BPA other than QB, we WANT Kirk Cousins to sign with anybody outside of the top-10 draft teams. This possibly gives us a shot at Tremaine Edmunds, Quenton Nelson, or Roquan Smith.
It’s almost a guarantee Cousins is going to sign with a top 10 draft team. It’s probably either the Jets or Broncos, but I guess there’s an outside shot it’s JAX
Exactly… or you would want a team like Arizona trading up in the 7-10 range. That seems to be where Nelson and the LBs would most likely go.
I like Lazard. He’s not fast, but he’s a big guy that comes up with the ball. He’ll probably run a 4.8, maybe a little faster, but he gets the football. That’s something Parker was supposed to do, but damn, that guy is never freaking healthy.
Every time he scores a TD, you can do a Green Lazard shot. lol
Hey Randy – Whaddaya think of Lazard?
Gallup may be nice, but man, I really hate to use an early pick on a WR, and we’d have to. I think we need the OL and TE much more than the WR.
AGREED… SO MUCH!!!
….only if we were able to pick up an additional pick or two on day 2, would I consider it.

It’s that time of year where I’m beginning to covet that which we likely can’t get. I’m talking about Tremaine Edmunds. I think the likelihood of him falling to us is astronomical and I’m almost willing to trade up a few spots to get him.
So as of today, I think the only guy I’d trade up for is Edmunds and the only guy I’d trade down for is Billy Price. We should probably just sit tight at R1P11 and hope for either of Quenton Nelson, Roquan Smith, or the BPA QB to fall to us…
————–
I want to amend this post of mine from yesterday. I think that IF we were to trade down (I’m NOT advocating as much!!!), I’d be cool with EITHER of Billy Price or Marcus Davenport… the value would be there for both. But of the two, give me Price over Davenport ALL DAY. THAT’S how important it is to me to get this O-Line of ours fixed.
Just wanted to mention that while I don’t want Davenport @ R1P11, he’d be alright in a tradedown to the 20s, IMO.
Davenport at #11 screams bust to me. He’d be better off drafted at the end of RD 1 or even somewhere in RD 2 to take the pressure off of him.
Again… AGREED!!!
Though I disagree with your usage of the term “bust” as it applies to when a player is drafted.
Yea, I mentioned the other day that Davenport is my #2 DE, but that I felt that Chubb is the only DE worthy of the top 15.

And THERE lies the temptation of trading down… I’m GUILTY of as much over the years!!! I… MUST… RESIST!!! BPA @ R1P11!!! 😀
One blue-chipper in the hand is worth three “???”-chippers in the bush. I’m learning my lesson!
I’m not saying we should trade down, I’m just saying the only way I would consider a WR early is if we had an additional pick. Who knows what happens at this point with trade downs, player trade, etc…
M – Yeah, bust is a strong word. Just not a wise value at that pick might be better.
EXACTLY!!! Well stated!

Right on! I’m with ya!
I don’t think a Gallup is expected to go very high
Anyone know where he is projected?
Round 3
Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 11: Quenton Nelson, OG, Notre Dame (A)
Round 2 Pick 10: Dallas Goedert, TE, South Dakota State (A)
Round 3 Pick 9: Ronald Jones II, RB, Southern California (A+)
Round 4 Pick 11: Michael Gallup, WR, Colorado State (A+)
Round 4 Pick 30: Troy Fumagalli, TE, Wisconsin (A-)
Round 6 Pick 9: Godwin Igwebuike, FS, Northwestern (A)
Round 7 Pick 5: Kurt Benkert, QB, Virginia (A+)
Round 7 Pick 11: Fred Warner, OLB, Brigham Young (A+)
I don’t think Gallup will really be available that late, but he was, so . . .
HOLY SVUCKS!!! That draft would be KILLER!!! 😀
Sign me up for that draft.
For those keeping score at home, when I say “SVUCKS”, that’s the equivalent of dropping the ‘F-Bomb’… keeping it kid-friendly!
We need to get one of these guys…
My top 5 OG:
1. Quentin Nelson
2. Billy Price
3. Isaiah Wynn
4. Braden Smith
5. Will Hernandez
Top centers, 1. Price, 2. Ragnow, and 3. Wynn.
BOOM!!!
Just remember, Frank Ragnow can play Guard, too.
Some of Ragnow’s BEST work has come from the RG position.
What is nice is that we can draft any of the top 3 centers I mentioned and play them at OG till Pouncey moves on.
What do you think of Clapp?
I would put Clapp in the group right behind these guys. I wouldn’t mind taking Clapp in the 4th round along with one of the guys I mentioned above.

You are TOTALLY in my head, Rgs!!! EXACTLY!!!
And that’s why I’ve got Frank Ragnow as a top Guard target, as well.
I have a feeling that all 6 of the guys I mentioned above will be gone by the end of round 2.
Who do you guys think is the best overall prospect in the draft?
Barkley
Barkley
I would probably put Barkley as my #1. I felt that way half way through the season, and I still do. We just have no shot at him, so I haven’t brought him up.
On Allen
1. He needs to speed up his reads and progressions. He sill stare down a receiver because he has the arm to force it in sometimes.
2. He bails on plays sometimes too quickly. He is a good runner and will go to that on occasion. Also will try to force an unbalanced throw in to a tight window.
3.He has some feet issues that he always could get away with un til now
Too put it bluntly he will go as far as his brain can develop! If he has a big ego and won’t listen it could be bust city for him!
If he goes in and becomes a film rat and studies he could be one of the best!
We’ll see?
He needs to sit and learn, thus he can’t go to a team that’s looking to start a guy right out of the gate.
Why are we ignoring the 3 top OT’s???????????
We don’t need one unless we can’t resign James.
MIKE MCGLINCHEY
CONNOR WILLIAMS
ORLANDO BROWN
I’m a big fan of McGlinchey, so if James doesn’t come back he moves into my top 3 for the 11th pick.
To take one of them, we’d miss the best Edge rusher, OLB, and this year the best OG, unless he’s already gone. If we could take one of those guys to replace James and still get a quality TE and OG in the 2nd and 3rd and a quality RB and DE or OLB in the 4th, then yeah I say great go for it.
If we don’t resign James.
About moving down in the draft, I hate it.
I still hurt from all the great players we missed so we could trade down and draft Odrick and Misi.
I know the theory is the talent is plateau-ed between 11 and 20 for example so we should be fine to trade with Buffalo, but that is TEN great guys we miss. There is a reason a guy goes at 21 instead of 11. He’s not as good.
Now if you are drafting a different position that is undervalued like OG or really deep in a certain year like RB this year, then maybe you can steal a pick somewhere, but I hate to gamble and higher picks are more precious.
I’d much rather have fewer picks at better spots than more picks at worse spots..We don’t need ten subs, we need 5 studs.
I think we have a shot at a very good player at #11, especially if we have a run on QBs. …so trading down would be very low on my list.
We pick at #11
If you throw in 4 QB’s that is only 6 other players before us!
There sill be several players to be had!!!!!!
yesss … fingers crossed for a Tunsil like gift.
(without having to resort to my making a fake gas mask home video again)
You can hope for a run on QBs in the first 6 picks, then have a team get desperate and trade up in the 7-10 range. …I could definitely see 4 QBs go in that senerio.

Thank you, Wyoming! I appreciate your insight into a player I’ve not seen very much of!
Not a problem.
The way I see it at worst you get
Mat Moore 1-TD to 2-INT’s
or
Brett Farve 2-TD’s to 1 INT’s
My hope is that Josh Allen gets pushed down to us.
I was thinking the other day that we could take the top OT and push Tunsil back to OG and that would fix one guard spot?
If you like dark Richie you’ve got to love the way Connor Williams plays LT because he’s brutal.
Do you think Tunsil would go for that? That might piss him off. LTs have the potential to make a lot more money than LGs and he already took one for the team his rookie year, which put him behind in his development at LT.
Maybe getting pissed off would be a good thing for him?
because he damn sure didn’t take the bull by the horns last year!!!!!!!!!!!
In many cases all you need to do to get a good indication of what a player is capable of at the next level is look at what Daniel Jeremiah has to say about him and then go with the opposite.
While Jeremiah has worked under Ozzie Newsome in Baltimore, I HAVE to agree with ya on this!
Jeremiah’s takes are underwhelming and often OFF from reality.
If Jeremiah was any good, he’d still be in the league as a scout or have been promoted to at LEAST an assistant GM spot.
My biggest fear is Allen goes to the Jet’s and Goes lights out ALL-PRO and takes Brady’s place for the next 15 years!!! 😦
Brady’s place in the division that is
That will not happen because there is not a Bellicheck there in NY (or anywhere else).
I think what we have suffered through in Boston is a very rare alignment of QB and HC.
I really doubt Brady is the GOAT if he had been drafted by Detroit.
And I doubt Bellicheck wins 5 SBs with Bledsoe, Cassell, and Drew Stanton at QB.
Sorry, but I just had to share this:
https://twitter.com/305_sports/status/962772267481608192
I wish sometimes I had a “delete post” button or at least a “dislike” button.
A “delete post” button would be censorship. That’s not nice.
Jeremiah’s first 13 picks in his current mock are impossible to disagree with, but that includes Josh Allen to us, which I would dread.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000908233/article/jeremiah-mock-draft-10-browns-jets-fins-redskins-take-qb
You’ve got to throw out ALL mock drafts until Kirk Cousins is signed. And if ya believe Mike Florio, the same goes for Drew Brees.
but, you see, that is where I disagree. the pick he has for us is a complete waste of a first round pick
Naples said that he’d “dread” taking Josh Allen @ R1P11.
nevermind. hehehehe
There are some rumblings that the Cardinals will try to sign Cousins.
Well, they would need to clear some cap to make that happen. My front runner is the Jets.
Yeah I read an article that they could do it but would need to structure his contract differently than say how Jimmy G’s contract was done.
yeah, a lot of teams could do it but it’s a matter of what you’re willing to sacrifice to sign one guy to a contract like that and the cost/benefit. the Jets have the cap to do it without needing to make cuts or restructure guys.
we could make it happen and our cap situation sucks
If anything, I could see the Cards trying to trade up to get one of the qb’s in this draft and if there’s one sitting there at #11 when we’re on the clock I fully expect a trade to happen. Unless they’ve already moved up before then. JMHDBO
I heard Patrick Peterson on the radio during super bowl week and he felt the Cards are close and need a vet QB. He said he feels college QBs are too green coming in and aren’t prepared for the NFL. Now he’s not a GM but he said he’d let his opinion be known and would help recruit a QB like Cousins.
It would be nice to be in a different situation than we find ourselves in right now but if Nelson is there when we’re on the clock he’s got to be the guy. There’s no if’s, and’s or but’s about it. Edmunds, Smith and Fitz could be there and we’ve GOT to take Nelson.
It’s unfortunate to have to pass up on talent like that elsewhere but because we’ve kicked the can down the road so many times we can’t go in another direction and it’s not like we’d be picking any lesser of a player in Nelson but offensive guards aren’t playmakers.
But, you couldn’t argue with the pick. I also couldn’t argue if we went offensive line in the 2nd as well. I would love to see us with an o-line that’s so good at what it does that we could put Matt Moore back there and he could shred a D all day because of the time he has.
Or an offensive line that’s so good at rb we could have a platoon of rb’s who no D could defend against because they don’t get a hand on any of them until they have five yards on the ground .
They are so lucky McDaniels backed out. They are so much better off:

Colts Finalizing Five-Year Deal With Frank Reich To Be New Head Coach http://bit.ly/2soR1zW #Colts
What happened to Dan Campbell?
Always the bridesmaid…
Good for him. He paid his dues as an asst. and did a very good job. Now build an OL for Luck Colts so you don’t get him killed like you almost already did.
Exactly. one of the reasons why I don’t understand the Chubb pick everyone is mocking to them.
I see Barkley mocked to them too.
I guess I’m not seeing what others are seeing when they have James going in the top 10. When I think of top ten safeties I think of Earl Thomas and I’m not seeing that in Derwin James. Not close.
^^^
From what I’ve read about him is he’s all about upside, his game needs some polishing. Big safety.
I don’t see that aggressive level of play you’d want in a safety. Yeah, they blitzed him and he got by with his athleticism but I guess what I’m trying to say is I don’t see him playing hard.
That’s weird because they say he’s the alpha in the room and is a film rat.
well, it doesn’t seem to translate onto the field.
I guess what I am saying is I don’t see him as a clear upgrade to anyone we’ve got at safety.
RETURNED from seeing the movie “The Shape of Water,” which, in our opinion was on the “X” side of an “R” rated movie. It’s set in the early 1960’s, and those who were teens or adults then will enjoy it even more. Seems as though the U.S. military has discovered a previously unknown being in the waters of the Amazon River. Could this creature qualify as the first live animal to go into outer space? –Of course, the Soviets are VERY interested. They even have a doctor/spy planted in this government location in Baltimore keeping an eye on things. Where this story goes from here is something you’ll have to find out for yourself. But rest assured there are enough twists and turns to keep you involved throughout. In my opinion, it has earned the nomination it received for best picture of the year. But it most assuredly is NOT for all viewers!
Know what I appreciate about Prof Lou? He views thing in HIS lenses.
Hey, us independent ‘scouts’ (for lack of a better term) are going to hit and miss at times, but I APPRECIATE independent viewpoints such as his… EVEN when disagreed upon.
and that comment right there is why you will find, printed on the side of my head, “inflate to 80lbs”. lol
😆
Nelson was gone by #11
Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 14 (G.B.): Tremaine Edmunds, OLB, Virginia Tech (B)
Round 2 Pick 10: Dallas Goedert, TE, South Dakota State (A)
Round 2 Pick 13 (G.B.): Frank Ragnow, C/OG, Arkansas (C)
Round 3 Pick 9: Braden Smith, OT/OG, Auburn (A)
Round 4 Pick 11: Royce Freeman, RB, Oregon (A+)
Round 4 Pick 30: Troy Fumagalli, TE, Wisconsin (A-)
Round 6 Pick 9: Justin Lawler, DE, Southern Methodist (A+)
Round 7 Pick 5: Mike White, QB, Western Kentucky (C)
Round 7 Pick 11: Dimitri Flowers, FB, Oklahoma (A+)
very nice if it worked out that way
NICE!!!
Are we replacing one Western Kentucky QB with another one?
I wonder if NOW people will take Northern Illinois University seriously… after Jimmy G is now the highest paid player in NFL history.
No. Because he played for Eastern Illinois. lol
Oops! You got me on that! I just done did a FAIL!
I really do like Sutton Smith though. Going to be keeping a close eye on him over the next two seasons.
I need to look into Justin Lawler, DE, Southern Methodist a little more. Seems like he may be a bit under rated.

It’s official Colts fans!
Frank Reich is your new head coach: http://indcolts.co/VUgXzS
Did you feel that blast of air? That’s Colts fans breathing a sigh of relief. They lucked out when McDaniels reneged on taking the position. Reich is going to be so much better than him.
Actually, looks a bit slow. My mid-round DE is still Chad Thomas.
mine too if he wants to play football badly enough
appears to be coachable if he wants it … quick with good size
MF13, ProfLou, et al; Who is the most famous QB to ever play at Eastern Illinois?? – – IF YOU answered “Tony Romo,” you’re right!!!
I keep hearing that because Chad Thomas is into music he won’t be into football. People can have more than one talent or interest.
of course, but the word is he is considering a CAREER in music and trying to run the two concurrently and there is concern that he will either drop football if he hits it big in the biz after you invested a pick in him or just be too distracted / exhausted from the concerts to be a film rat.
not me making this judgment …
Not accusing you. I’ve read this a few times in various places. If he’s on a football team in season he can’t be on tour. No way that works.
Derwin James is a fine player, but we simply do not need to waste a pick on a starting SS.
We have two very good ones already.
We need a FS and my choice of the moment is Van Smith out of Clemson in the 7th round.
He’s a playmaker with lots of experience against very high level of competition:
Had 190 tackles, eight tackles for loss, a quarterback pressure, four interceptions for 165 yards, three pass breakups, two caused fumbles and a recovered fumble in 1,644 snaps over 42 games (28 starts) in his career … eighth in Clemson history in interception return yards and ninth in takeaway return yards (165). http://www.clemsontigers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=28500&ATCLID=209875933
check out Wake Forest safety Jessie Bates
http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/01/05/wake-forest-safety-jessie-bates-declares-for-nfl-draft/
Maybe not starting caliber, but he’s an excellent STs guy.
http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nfl/miami-dolphins/article199566554.html
Naples, another guy I like who could be there in the 3rd round is Alabama CB Tony Brown. He has good size at 6′ 198 lbs., and physical for a CB. Very good against the run, loves to hit (unlike a lot of CB’s). He is a better safety than a CB and has played both safety positions as well as CB for Alabama. He plays CB for Alabama 1. because of Fitzpatrick and 2. he is fast, could run in the 4.3’s. He is a gym rat and workout warrior.
He plays the CB position the way Landry plays the WR position.
He would make a really good FS for us with his speed and still have the hitter in Mcdonald at FS but much faster.
M13, I know you won’t like him being a Saban DB, LOL.
😀
He offers position flexibility.
What round?
Actually falls pretty close to my thinking!
Except the punter? I like the P out of Texas
https://twitter.com/PhinsComNews/status/962829519739551745
It’s amazing that these guys don’t have a clue as to how compensatory picks work.
LOL
He’s right about Landry’s but it won’t be until 2019.
BBM I of course have hyper-watched this guy Tony Brown and he is fast enough to be a CB in the NFL and hits hard enough to be converted to FS in the NFL. That’s a great combo.
He was a bona fide track star in high school and Mr Football in Texas which is a damn big state.
However he does not have great production numbers in college and was suspended for drug and discipline issues, so I’d be leery of him and really a lot depends on his interviews.
This is a really weak FS class. Most are too slow or too easily confused. I’d skip it and wait a year. We can manage with what we have and commit our resources to greater needs.
This even includes minkah who is better near the LOS as a blitzer and slot cover. He’s not a natural deep safety at all, which is what we need. He is a gung ho SOB though.
We don’t really need some special deep safety. Jones and McDonald are the starters. I think a lot of this has come from discussions about using McDonald and/or Jones as a nickel LB and having a deep safety. We might already have a guy in the hopper with Maurice Smith who got playing time this year as a UDFA. The coaches like him. Then again we have new DB coaches now so we’ll see.
Thomas and Aikens are two of our STs aces and they’re both FAs. They’re not glamour positions but very important and not always easy to replace. Some guys are just good at it. They are also part of our depth in the secondary even though Aikens didn’t play a defensive snap all season which I found kind of strange. Would you re-sign one or both or neither?
I like them both if we have room on the 53.
MikeE,
I know who Lazard is but not much about him. He kinda reminds me of Oronde Gadsden.
Lazard is exactly the type of guy I’m talking about. Blue collar, lunch pail guys who run great routes and will fight for the ball, block guys out with his body size. Not blazing speed but fast enough but a strong guy like those big bodies in basketball who wear you down posting you up.
Amazing to me that you said OG Randy, because that’s exactly who he reminds me of. He won’t excel at anything at the combine, probably won’t run fast, jump high or do anything great, but when he gets on the football field, he just makes tough catches, and gets that ball.
Thanks Naples, I was unaware of his character issues.
At punter I’m holding out until next year for Lester Coleman of Viriginia. Best punter in college football.
Wyo – I don’t think there’s a chance to get Gesicki, or really any of the better TE’s if we wait for the 4th RD. That’s why no matter how many drafts I do, if I don’t go OL in the 1st, I feel like I have to go O-line 2nd RD, and then TE 3rd RD. It seems like there’s no way around that.
Generally I take Andrews in the second
We’ve had discussions before about players leaving the team to go elsewhere and some have said that once they leave they don’t care what they do; they’re gone.
But, to me, I feel even more strongly about a former Patriots player coming to play for the Dolphins. I don’t want him on this team no way, no how. Don’t care who he is or what he brings to the table. Fuck him. Don’t want his stench on my team. Let him go play elsewhere.
Lou – Have the compensatory picks been determined yet?
I don’t believe so. But, in that mock up above the person doing the mock seems to think you get comp picks in the same year you lose the player(s). He thinks we’ll get an additional 3rd rd comp pick for losing Landry this year.
We’re not looking at any this year anyway because we really didn’t lose anyone.
Who did we lose, I can’t even remember? LOL
Jenkins and Sims were the only two.
MikeE,
Plus, I believe he was a team captain, so he may bring some leadership qualities, which we need.
Oronde Gadsen always seemed to get open despite 4.7 something speed and would catch anything within reaching distance. Great hands and fight for the ball.
