2018 Miami Dolphins – Free Agency – OT

Last week we took a look at the inside guys, the OG’s, but with the possible loss of our RT Ja’Wuan James, we’ll see who’s available to fill that spot.  Of course, we may already have that player on our roster (Jesse Davis), but they may want Davis to continue as the swing man, who can play either OG or OT.  Just so you know, the top guy available is Nate Solder and I’m not even going to add him to the list, because we’re not paying him $13M+, so forget that.  It’s slim pickins folks, I’ll show you what I think are the “best” 5.

Austin Pasztor  6’7 305  27YO

Austin Pasztor, Quinton Dial

Pasztor played last season on a 1 year deal with the Falcons after being the odd man out of a very talented Browns OL.  Pasztor has played both RG and RT and played and started all 16 games for the Browns in 2016.  Last year he was the swing man for the Falcons and he only saw action on 7 games.  Pasztor was an UDFA in 2012, and signed by the Jaguars.  He played in 15 games for the Jags in 2013 starting 12.  At worst, he could be a depth guy for us, or if somehow we don’t draft a solid OL, he can be a decent starter.

***************************************************************************************

Greg Robinson  6’5 332  25YO

panthers-lions-football-9b303d8e19c3d0d7

It’s unusual to see a 25YO OT hit the free agent market, but that’s where the former 1st RD pick is today.  Robinson was overdrafted by the Rams in 2014 at #2 overall, and Jeff Fisher rolled him out at both LG and LT in all 16 games, starting 12. Robinson played his college ball at Auburn, and the Rams went all in on the NFL combine superstar. The 6’5 332 lb behemoth ran a 4.92 40, put up 32 reps, had a 113″ broad jump, so you can see, the big guy can move.  He was a run blocking monster at Auburn, but he struggled with pass protection in college, and those struggles continued in the NFL.  While there’s no questioning his outstanding athletic ability, so far, no one has been able to reach him and get him to better his technique.  He’d be a risk/reward type of signing.  He’s young enough to teach, but do we have the staff in place to do it?  Tough to be confident answering that question.  He’s played 3 full seasons at LT, but maybe RT would be his better side.  Stay tuned.

***********************************************************************************

Seantrel Henderson  6’7 331  25YO

seantrel-story-10-16

Yeah, that Seantrel Henderson.  I wanted us to take a late RD flyer on this kid, because He has the size and athletic ability to become a good OT.  His biggest issue is his strength, as it was coming out of college.  He moves well, but doesn’t have the power.  He may not have the desire either, which has long been one of his knocks, he has the lazy tag.  He has started 26 games for the Bills in his first 2 seasons for the Bills, but the last 2 years he’s been getting splinters on the bench, playing in only 8 games total.  He’d be a cheap sign, that much is true, and if we could get this  kid fired up, he could be a good player, but that’s a big “if”.

***********************************************************************************

Byron Bell  6’5 320  29YO

49e06773bafe892b07306a5cd91e8716-original

Like I said, it’s not a great market out there, and the top dog Solder will really cash in.  Bell played in 12 games last season for the Cowboys, starting only 2, but has been a durable starter for 4 seasons with the Panthers, and 1 season with the Titans. He signed a 1YR deal with the Cowboys last season, and I’m sure he’d love a multi year deal, but I’m not sure if that’s in the cards for the 29 YO RT.

***************************************************************************************

James Hurst  6’5  317

18_JamesHurst_news

Hurst was an UDFA and signed by the Baltimore Ravens in 2014.  He saw action in all 16 games since his rookie season, starting in only 11 games his first 3 seasons, but last year, Hurst started all 16 games at both LG and LT.  Not to kiss Raven ass, but any player that can start 16 games on the Ravens is a player I’d take a look at.  Hurst not only played every game last season, he played well.  He’s played LT, LG and RT.  He’s versatile, and he’s coming into his own, which makes him a solid option for us.

*********************************************************************************

Our own Sam Young is a FA we might re-sign, likely to a short term contract.   If there’s anyone out there you feel should be included, let me know.

WOW! I missed some shit yesterday! Storm knocked the power out for my family and my mother-in-law, so we had to buy a generator for my mother-in-law, and after we get the gas and get the damn thing ready to go, the power comes on. I wasn’t mad in the least, I was pretty happy, and now if it happens again, we’re ready

  2. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Come all without, come all within
You’ll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn

  3. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Maybe Miami will develop a Spped rush package – Suh at nose flanked by 2 DE on each side.

  4. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Perhaps our guys played it right. Jarvis may soon realize the market for him isn’t as grand as he thought. You take that 16 as part of the guaranteed money but structure a cap friendly deal and voila Jarvis is remains here pissing off Tim and Lou.

And the pig keeps his jersey

  5. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Phelon – C’mon man, you got this! OK, I hear ya, better off letting the professionals handle that. 🙂

  6. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Tim, last night you said “Nobody is playing 6-5/6-6 250 guys at S and LB.” when talking about covering TE’s. The first guy who came to my mind was OLB Lorenzo Carter from UGA he is 6’6″ 245 lbs. After watching his tape (every snap against Alabama) he played DE almost every snap. He is very good at maintaining his edge but looks like he just needs to put on weight and focus on being a DE. So I am still looking, LOL.

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

He is considered one of those freak athlete 5 star recruits but didn’t really show up until his senior year. I was high on him toward the end of the season and mocked him to us a few times but watching more of his tape, he might be a project player in the NFL to start.

  7. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Mike – Homey don’t play with high voltage.

  8. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

    Piggy’s future enemy:

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Phelon – The article I read said we offered Jarvis $13.5M per. That’s a great offer

  10. “I’m sorry Jarvis, that offer is no longer on the table. We live in a different world than we lived in 12 months ago”.

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m still digesting this trade. I’m still surprised by it, but I like it. I wonder if Branch is going to be cut, we have young guys behind Quinn and we can also draft a DE. We’re going to be paying more for Quinn on his remaining contract and probably in his new contract too, so why keep Branch? We have to keep him this year with an $11M dead cap hit, but next year it goes down to $2M. Either way, getting Quinn is either going to be insurance against Branch, or if Branch really picks up his game, then you have a tough decision to make, which is a good thing

  12. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – You think it’s his agent, or his ego? I think the latter

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Maybe they start working Harris at LE. Am I wrong, or hasn’t Quinn been playing ROLB/RE in both STL and LA?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I have to say – It cracks me up when these guys say I need to take care of my family, and $16M just doesn’t cut it. It’s so hard to relate to athletes when they say shit like that. OK, say you can’t play football anymore, get a fucking job like the rest of us, and invest your money wisely

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Like most football players, he’s probably not qualified for anything but football or minimum wage.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Then he is a bigger dumbass than I thought. $16M in one year is the definition of taking care of your family. Properly managed you would never have to work again.

I don’t see Miami paying the franchise, but I also don’t see them rescinding it until the last minute.

  14. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I think Quinn is probably Wake’s replacement. Maybe not this year, but Wake isn’t under contract next year and will be 37. I believe they like Branch.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t know, Quinn’s been in the league for 7 years already on the right side, it would be easier to work Harris on the left side. You and Lou might be right, maybe they think Quinn can make the switch to LE.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

They can put Harris on the left. I’m just saying that it is most likely wake that is the odd man out next year.

  15. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Did the trade with Buff cause Nelson, Smith, and Edmunds were gone. Used our 4th as our compensation for Landry 😦

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 21 (BUF): Hernandez, Will, OG, Texas-El Paso (A-)
Round 1 Pick 22 (BUF): Goedert, Dallas, TE, South Dakota State (B)
Round 2 Pick 10: Guice, Derrius, RB, LSU (B+)
    Round 3 Pick 9: Ragnow, Frank, C/OG, Arkansas (A-)
Round 4 Pick 11: Warner, Fred, OLB, Brigham Young (A)
Round 4 Pick 30: Ferguson, Riley, QB, Memphis (C)
Round 6 Pick 9: Flowers, Dimitri, FB, Oklahoma (A+)
Round 7 Pick 5: McKenzie Jr, Kahlil, DT, Tennessee (A)
Round 7 Pick 11: Nichols, Deatrick, CB, South Florida (A+)

Tim, Warner is a good coverage LB: 6’3″ 227

Bottom Line Warner’s future success could largely depend on who takes him and how they use him. While most will view him as an outside linebacker, Warner moves around like a big safety. With his instincts and cover skills in space, finding a hybrid role in sub-packages might be where he is best utilized. Warner’s size, speed and workout at the Combine may play into his draft value more heavily than many other prospects. Warner should find immediate work as a backup who can help on special teams.

The knock on him is he tends to be an arm tackler and not a thumper.

  16. We could extend Quinn to get his cap hit down which is probably what we’re going to do but we’d still need to make some major moves to free up the cap necessary to keep Landry under the tag for the season. I doubt the team wants to make those moves and either release guys to free up that cap or restructure and screw up the cap for the future in order to keep Landry.

So, Landry is either going to get extended in MIA for A LOT less than the original offer or he’s going to be taking less from another team to get out of MIA and get traded.

A lot of teams are balking at his demands now and are backing away. If he were to not sign the tag and sit out for the year like Omar suggests then he’s only doing it at his own detriment because he not only doesn’t make the $16M dollars he also risks losing out on money come next year during free agency. So, I don’t see that as an option for him.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

      Agreed.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not a huge difference in cap terms btwn $16 mil and $13 mil……but there sure is franchise flat out and a long term contract. Whether with us or another team, have a feeling Jarvis will be getting one of those.

      • no, there isn’t but he’s not going to be playing under the cap in MIA. they’re just blowing smoke up his ass. and, he’s probably not getting the lower amount either to stay in MIA because the Quinn thing kind of put that in jeopardy.

If he gets $13M it’s going to be from someone else because I just don’t see the team making the moves it would need to free up the cap in order to sign him unless it’s for a much more cap friendly figure.

some put in on the team, saying that their going to lose out on Landry for $1.5M and that’s not that much more but Landry is the one who should have taken the money because now, if he wants to stay in MIA, he’s not even going to get that.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I think letting Jarvis and his agent try to work a deal includes letting him see what other teams will offer him, but that is a double-edged sword. All he has to do is sign the tender and work for that $16 mil next season if the offers come up low. I would do that, but then history has taught me that players sure do love that long-term contract. Not sure if it is “set for life” or simply feeling wanted, but hard to ignore it. So I’m going with that happening, even not as certain as you it will not be with the Phins.

      • I just can’t imagine them keeping him under the tag. The moves they’d need to make in order to fit him under the cap would be too damaging to the team in terms of players they’d need to release or restructure and I just don’t think the team is willing to do that.

So, if he’s not traded by free agency the chances are good they rescind the tag either right before or soon after it begins.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Maybe I am wrong, but I thought if he signs the tag that it is locked in absent a two-first offer (which won’t happen) or them working out a trade (that would most likely include a long-term contract that Landry would have to agree too).

  17. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Just onto we have Quinn. He is 6-4 and 250. That makes three of our top four DEs undersized but real talented speed rushers. Time for Branch to to reserve a permanent table at his local waffle house………cause Andre ain’t gonna be getting much pass down down work.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

      I saw him listed at 6’4″, 270

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That is just what popped up for me…..but the Rams did have him playing LB last year. Maybe Quinn will be eating too. But reading up on him, he was never considered a force against the run.

  18. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Mike E., I liked that draft as well. Deatrick Nichols is not the fastest CB but has above ave cover skills and has played outside, slot and FS. DT Kahlil McKenzie Jr could be a late round steal. He should have stayed another year at TN cause they say he is not quick off the snap and needs to get better with that but he is a beast and very hard to move and requires double teams.

I didn’t draft a WR, cause we have a group of WR’s waiting in the wings and wouldn’t mind seeing more of Grantman in the slot.

Also, we could bring in F/A WR Bruce Ellington who was a slot guy for the Texans who ran a 4.31 and a 4.37 40 at his combine. He has been hampered by injuries his whole career almost but believe he is healthy now. He has never really gotten a chance to prove himself due to those injuries.

    Ellington vs NE

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BBMike – I have a feeling if we trade Landry, or don’t keep him if things go south with negotiations, we’re going to either go with what we got, or draft another WR probably later in this draft. After picking up Quinn, I can’t see much another FA signing

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Yah, me neither. I think they will roll with who they have on the roster now regardless of what Landry does.

  20. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

On a side note Penny was faster than I thought he would be at a nice 4.46 and Ballage also had a very nice time at that same number. We could wait and take one of them not in the first and still get a fast guy with fresh young legs who weighs in the 220s. I’d love either of those guys.

  21. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Is it possible that the bounty of DLs on our roster means that Fins might let Suh go to free up $ for other areas of need? Curious what y’all might be thinking.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Good to see you Rhino, but letting Suh go doesn’t free up much cash does they did a redo on him like two years ago. If they didn’t would be different. Would help with the cap going forward, but get the sense they are more worried about this year.

  22. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Landry not signing the tag and sitting out the year threat is ludicrous. The longer he waits to sign it, the longer Miami can hold on to him. If he waits until July and they rescind it, he’s screwed. The more time goes by the less market he has. Why would the team rescind it before they need to? They can wait until July, too.

  23. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Interesting trade for Quinn. I think it’s a little leap to expect him to go back to DE and play like he did 3 years ago. He played OLB last year. He really hasn’t played at a high level at DE for years, has he? I think Wade Phillips is a great defensive coordinator. Maybe there’s a reason he moved him to OLB. He’s never been a strong 3 down DE, so I doubt he tries to do it here. I’m guessing more of a sub package edge rusher. He’s had a bad shoulder and concussion issues…possibly part of the reason they moved him to OLB because he can’t hold up to the pounding on the LOS.

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

      Spoiler, LOL

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

There’s a show on cable (It’s awful) called Adam Ruins Everything. On this blog, it’s Randy Ruins Everything. lol

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I hate that show. How many times do you want to punch Adam just seeing the trailer. LOL

Quinn is a 4-3 edge rusher, not a 3-4 DE or a 3-4 OLB even though he did have 8.5 sacks last year. So being that he’s not a 3-4 fit and the Rams need to sign Donald, they traded him. He is a perfect fit for the defense we run.

  24. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Mike E., I agree about the cap room and adding other F/A but think Ellington would be on the cheap side coming off his injuries. I was thinking to at least bring him in for a look.

  25. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  26. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Quinn got 8.5 sacks last yr in 14 games, so that is not too bad at all, especially for being moved to OLB in a 3-4 D.

He’s definitely not big enough to play DE in a 3-4; those guys are more like DTs.
Wade Phillips has always preferred the 3-4. He didn’t just change because of Quinn.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He played LB last year in a 3-4. Not sure if he was a true on or like Wake was in our (where he was rushing 4 out of 5 plays)

  27. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Landry and R1P11 to the Bears for Jordan and R1P8.

  28. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Jordan Howard is 6’1 225, he’s only 23, has averaged 4.6y/carry in his career (for Chicago), caught 52 passes in 2 yrs, was pro-bowl as a rookie, and wasn’t our new OC his coach that year?

  29. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I think players who decide not to do drills at the combine should have their invitations rescinded.

  30. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Howard is still on a rook contract. Assume if that trade was done the draft pick(s) involved would be ours.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

But that would not hurt our cap at all and free us of the 9 million I was willing to pay Jarvis.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

For sure the trade would be real cap friendly. Part of why think the pick involved would be ours. I’d do Landry for Howard straight up at the same salary.

  31. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Daniel Greenberg @ChiSportUpdates 29m29 minutes ago
The Chicago Bears and the Miami Dolphins have had conversations about Jarvis Landry and a third-round pick to the Bears in exchange for Jordan Howard and a swap of the Dolphins pick at No. 11 overall for the Bears at No. 8.

    Things are getting very interesting.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So that would be like a high 2nd (Landry) the 3rd and the swap to #8 back (probably worth another 2nd). I’d actually be cool with that.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It would probably cost a team a minimum of a 3rd to move up from #11 to #8, maybe a 2nd as you suggest. Than it’s like Landry for Howard straight up.

  32. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Jordan Howard’s Bears nickname is The Bulldozer.

  33. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

    I think I could be a GM. If only I had a BarcaLounger….

  34. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

at the combine he ran the 40 in 4.59.
He was one of those guys who left Alabama Birmingham when their program shut down.

He transferred to Indiana and did well there. He had set UAB all time rushing yards in a season record.(1587) The step up to Big Ten did not scare him as he became 1st team all conference his only hear there.

His comparison is Arian Foster, a Gase fave.

  35. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Sorry…just not sure how Quinn fits in our defense, is all. Disregard my comment! Lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL, why are you not sure? His best seasons were in a 4-3 as right side edge rusher. He was slowed up for a couple of seasons with injuries but he’s still young (28 in May).

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not sure why you are sorry…..best take on Quinn that cam out on the board. And he is in aqua now. We’ll see what they do with him. DL is looking strong, but then it did before. They thinking Brady?

  36. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
He’s terrible against the run, so I don’t consider him a 3 down player. I see him as a pass rush specialist. And, he hasn’t had a whole year…or a productive year as a DE in 3 years. Nobody knows how he’ll play at DE now.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

What you say might be true, but we’re not paying him $11M per to come in on 3rd down, that boy is STARTING for better or for worse.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well it’s not rocket science, I don’t think he forgot how to play DE. LOL

  37. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I Like Jordan Howard, I had him in my keeper league, which i think is now going down the tubes unfortunately. I kept track of him and watched him a lot. He’s a good complement to Drake. He runs hard. I remember a game last season towards the end, he racked up a lot of carries, and did really well. I’d be more than happy to have him here. Wondering though who it is we want that we’re trying to move up.

  38. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    stanger,
    I bummed everybody out! Lol

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

C’mon Randy – We’re used to it already. You put the kibash on everything, it’s cool. Still love ya!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You just brought the facts. Only thing that bums me about Quinn are his salary, that he is not good against the the rush, and that we have three edge pass rushers now.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you watched him before he had some injuries and medical issues which are a concern, he played the run well. In fact he blew up quite a few running plays in the backfield because that is where he lived.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I was just reading what some football folks and Bears fans said about him, but they could be biased and wrong for sure. Have no doubt that he has made some nice tackles on RBs.

  39. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Phelon – O Rob is back, he was here yesterday, or maybe 2 days ago. He’s like a shark, he smells a powerback in our midst. lol

  40. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Then there is this. That time of year. LOL

    Ian Rapoport @RapSheet
Worth noting: There is zero desire by the #Bears to trade RB Jordan Howard, sources say. Doesn’t sound like there will be any splashy Jarvis Landry for Howard deal.

  41. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I dont comment too much, but I like the Howard trade scenario….of course I have also been drinking…..on a mini vacation in Florida.

  42. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Did Goedert not run the 40?

  43. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

For our defense to work the way it’s designed, is contingent on our offense to control the clock, score points and play with a lead some of the time. Something we have not done much of. Then these guys can pin their ears back and attack.

  44. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Jordan Howard can’t catch a cold tho…… doesn’t fit Gase wants of a RB

  45. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bookman – As you can tell, I’m clueless of my limitations, it’s everyone else here that knows them. lol

  46. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

vague rumor that maybe Trey Burton TE comes to us. He’s the former college QB who threw that SB pass to Foles. We already have a converted Qb to TE in Gray, so we aren’t scared of that, plus we have some kind of kinship with Philly.

They can’t afford to keep him with Ertz there already.

meh he’s too small for my taste at TE — 6’3 235 (That’s almost exactly my size, which was ok when I played TE, but that was before the days of face guards on helmets.

  47. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

No 40 time on Goeddert yet, but Gesicki had a great time … the same as Samuels: 4:55.
There are RBs not that fast. (and LBs wink wink draft Gesicki)

  48. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Josh Allen ran third fastest 40 QB time. Very nice 4.75.
    Lamar Jackson did not run?
    Mike White 5.09
    yikes that is slow.

  49. rich0322's avatar rich0322 says:

Hurst put up a good time. I was wrong when I said he might be the fasted, though. He ended up having the second best time, behind Gesicki.

Oh and I’m not counting Samuels as a TE. Lol.

  50. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I’d love to get Hayden Hurst or Mike Gesicki to catch passes ( or maybe Ian Thomas) and then later take ND TE Durham Smythe to block.

  52. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Smythe is a classic “Y” tight end who carries himself like an offensive lineman. He has the frame, toughness and ability to help do the dirty work as a run blocker for teams in need of toughness at the position. While Smythe can catch what is thrown to him, he’s unlikely to be a targeted pass catcher on the next level. Smythe’s particular talent as a run blocker should create an opportunity to become a solid starter for years to come.
    Strengths
Has good size and should continue to grow into his frame
    Has a finisher’s demeanor as a blocker
    Plays like an offensive lineman
    Technically sound blocker
Hand placement is accurate and he unlocks his hips into opponent
Runs his feet on down blocks until the block is secured
Understands his landmarks and takes proper angles
Excellent timing and radar when working up to linebacker on combos
Plus blocker for the position in-line and on the move
    Trustworthy in pass protection
Was able to work the seam and lay out to make the catch
Unfazed by hitters in the middle of the field

I absolutely hate the proposed trade. We will lose our best player on offense for a guy at best who split time with Drake. We move up 3 spots which doesn’t put us close enough to the to QBs. I will be very green if this trade happens. On top we get Howard who is a nice player but it is a draft deep at RB. SMH

I don’t think Quinn will bust but he is boom or just decent. A lot has to do with his durability. He’s gotten pretty banged up because he plays fast and violent. Let’s hope he has a few good seasons left.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ve read that back injuries have really hurt his ability to bend the edge… perhaps that’s why he was tried as a LB this past season.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Ireland back? If they are hurt, we’ll take em!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He moved to OLB because he’s not a 3-4 DE and Wade Phillips runs a 3-4. He’s not really a rush/space OLB either. He’s an up the field 4-3 edge DE. He fits our defense to a tee. It’s all about durability with him. He’ll have to pass a physical for the trade to go through so it’s not a done deal.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

He “tried” OLB because Wade Phillips is a 3-4 coach instituting a 3-4 defense.

  61. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

  64. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    I see you Phish. 😉

Quinn is basically Wake on the right side. We like to rotate our DL so I don’t think an addition like this means someone else is out. We used one DT and 3 DEs on the rush in sub packages last year. Now you have Wake, Quinn and Harris. They’re QB hunters. Branch and maybe Malveaux can play more run situations.

  65. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

all in all I’d rather draft Rashaad Penny and trade with the Bears straight up Landry for switching us from 11 to 8.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

11 to 8 gives you a better shot at Nelson or a QB.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

If that’s not enough for us , we could swap our 3rd for their 2nd.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I like trades like these, they’re strategical without giving up a lot.

In the case with Landry, we’re looking to get some kind of compensation instead of just letting him walk. It’s not going to be big stuff. Moving up in the draft gives us new options and there is value in that as well. Say we did that and that’s how we landed Nelson. He’s projected to help us turn things around on the OL. That’s a win. I think the running game is going to be more prominent and the coaching changes point to it.

I followed them because I had Goff as a backup QB and Gurley was my main back in FF. 😉

It’s the same situation as when we signed Mario Williams. The difference was he was over 30 and Quinn will be 28 in May. Mario was done. I hope Quinn has a few more years left.

    1. Roquan Smith, OLB, Georgia
    2a. Mike Gesicki, TE, PSU
    *2b. Frank Ragnow, C/G, Arkansas
    3. Rashaad Penny, RB, San Diego State
    4. Kyle Lauletta, QB, Richmond
    6. Darren Carrington II, WR, Utah
7a. Skai Moore, OLB, South Carolina

on that parkour video above, how do those guys find such perfectly spaced buildings? Every time I try to do that, the buildings are all too far apart, and i have to take the damn elevator back down and try again months later, then, same ol same ol. They must be in some east bloc ex communist country where they built everything too close together and had no urban zoning codes. Makes it easy for them.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

      Lol

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think they are from an eastern bloc country

      That’s a really perceptive observation

The buildings with the open blocks in the middle was really weird to me – so I know it’s a foreign country and you are probably right about the zoning laws affecting the spacing

  70. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Trading up to 8 isn’t going to get a QB.

  71. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

To me if you’re trading Landry and you want to move on, you use him as a chip to do something that helps you achieve your offseason goal. We’re not getting a boatload of picks or anything for him. We’re trying to get something decent for him is all. It’s never gonna blow everyone away. I don’t think his market will be very big either.

  72. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Bottom line to me is – don’t trade Landry unless you are getting a high kick in return

    Early 2nd at the latest

  73. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Baker Mayfield looked good today

    Suck on that Mayfield haters
    🐷

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think he’s rising not dropping. I don’t think he gets past the Jets unless there is another QB there they prefer.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        They might sign cousins

I don’t know what teams prefer but I’m getting the feeling the consensus is like Maycock has it which has Mayfield 4th

That doesn’t mean a team like the jests won’t take him
But it does mean the jests probablybhave tonprefer him to Rosen, Allen or Darnold

When it comes to QB, teams differ a lot I guess

  74. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think Nelson is one of the best players of not the best player in the draft but I don’t think anyone trades up for an OG

  75. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

What if we traded Jarvis to the Ravens? We’d probably swap R1P11 and R1P16, and possibly come away with their 2nd and 3rd rounders in return.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      No way a 2nd and a 3rd.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Let’s say Landry signs his tender and plays for one year
And then leaves via free agency next season
Then you probably have a comp pick coming down the line and it might be a 3rd round or maybe even a 2nd

It’s not worth it to trade him when you start getting into 3rd and 4th round picks

When players leave via free agency, the team they left still gets value back
So we can play this franchise tag game with him unless we get really good value that far surpasses anything we get back down the line via a comp pic

  76. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Also will hernandez looks really good to me
And when you factor in Smith and Price
There’s going to be good interior OL in the 2nd round
You don’t have to go all out for Nelson by trading up for him

  77. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Landry may also find out he’s valued closer to $10M than 15. Teams aren’t exactly knocking down the door for him and they are free to do so. I said a long time ago if a team offers Jarvis 5 years $50M (half guaranteed) take it because it may not come around again. Has to feed his family. Stop!

  78. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Tim
Are you talking about the franchise rules?
I’m just talking about a trade before Landry signs a tender

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Teams aren’t going to pay Landry top dollar and give up a mint. He’s not attracting that kind of attention already and he’s open season.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Well that’s reason why he won’t be traded and I agree with it

But that’s not reasthe n we should settle for less
If I’m the Dolphins I make a team do that or I keep Landry
I think that’s the point of the tag to begin with

I think Landry is in Miami in 18
        But possibly gone in 19

And if it plays out that way – I’m not really blaming the FO or Landry

  79. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you’re Cousins where do you sign? I’d target MIN and DEN.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It depends whether he wants to be on a contender or not

      But I’m a cynic
And I think it’s none thing to turn down more money in theory that’s actually doing it
I think the jests are real contenders for him despite the fact that they suck donkey genitals

  80. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ll believe it when I see it. He’s not on the level of either of those players. I hope a team does view him that way though, we should get a 1st rd pick then.

  84. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think this was our leverage with Landry. You want 14-15 million a year? Well find a team that is willing to pay you and we will trade you there. If not here is 16 million and we will talk to you next year. We essentially just let the market set his price

  85. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, I know you’ve said goodnight, goodnight! I think the Dolphins want to move on from Landry. So solid compensation will be accepted. No less than immediate compensatory picks a year earlier or a strategic option in the grand scheme of things. That’s what we should expect.

  86. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The divide has already been set, Landry gets traded, he’s not coming back to Miami. Make a deal that works for all parties and move on. The offense is being turned over as we retool the defense. Not odd with a new regime in place heading into year three.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Or maybe a trade down to #19 in some way or form.

Landry has to sign his tender right away regardless whether he has a team willing to pay him or not, he can’t procrastinate as Teams will fill needs via FAcy and the draft and spend their cap money, if he has any chance of getting paid he has to sign the tender right away, If Miami rescinds it after the draft he’s screwed!

i wouldn’t read too much into this action

  94. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

He has all the right to not sign, but run the risk of getting it pulled back. He can’t be traded until he signs either.
He might be close with another team now or he probably would of waited.
