Wedge Scouting Report: Harold Landry, Boston College

It’s not all fun and games  all the time destroying lifeforms across the universe.  Sometimes, the photon bomb you unleash doesn’t do the job – and there are still useless lifeforms left on the planet.

Well that’s when you bust out the planet grinder for the finishing touches

planetgrinder

It’s like a great pass rusher finishing off an offense – Harold Landry can finish off an offense.

HaroldLandry5

The Positives:  Let’s start with Landry’s very impressive 2016 season, 16.5 sacks, 22 tackles for a loss and one interception.  Landry wreaked havoc in the ACC in 2016.  Some scouts will argue that Landry is the 2nd best pass rusher in the 2018 draft after Chubb.

Landry kills offensive tackles with an explosive first step.  His initial burst rivals some of the NFL’s best pass rushers.  He gets around the tackle, turns his hips at the QB and closes quickly.  He’s got a non-stop motor and makes a lot of effort plays as well.

He’s also very good against the run – making him one of the nation’s most disruptive defenders.

HaroldLandry4

The Negatives:  Size.   Landry projects as a 4-3 DE in the NFL, but for his size.  At Boston College, Landry played with his hand in the ground most of the time, but it seems like a lot of scouts are calling him an OLB giving Landry the tweener moniker.

Landry actually did drop in coverage at Boston College so he can play OLB in a 3-4 defense but in a 4-3, where he might be more comfortable, to play DE, he might have to put on a little weight without sacrificing his speed.

Landry only played in 8 games last year and was nowhere as productive as he was in 2016 (only 5 sacks).

HaroldLandry6

The Alien Dust:   Pass rushers are like jello – there is always room for them.  This athletic pass rusher reminds me a lot of Cameron Wake.  And that might be who he replaces if the Dolphins draft him.

In my opinion, if the Dolphins want to focus on defense for a second year in a row, a pick like Landry in the first round makes a lot of sense.  The Dolphins would have their young bookend pass rushers in place for the next few years with a move like that.

If you can’t build your OL in the draft, maybe you can draft guys who destroy other OLs.

NCAA Football: Central Michigan at Boston College

Whether his team is down by 20 or up by 20 he is playing hard.  This guy is a finisher.  That is why Landry is like the Planet Grinder.

The right one was DESMOND KING, last year!!! 😡

And if ya don’t believe me, ask Randy!

  5. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Davis and Young ain’t starters on a good OL.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We don’t know enough about Davis yet but the team likes him. Andrew Norwell is a top UFA guard and he went undrafted in 2014. Young is a journeyman but he did play well down the stretch.

  6. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Joe Namath sucked. He always sucked and will always suck. End of story. No argument can be made otherwise.

HE SUCKED! Stinking gangreen wearin’ no talent loud mouthed JET!!

  7. Richardson, DGB, Smith; all from Mizzou. Hope Harris doesn’t suffer from their ailment.

  8. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I disagree vociferously! Big word! These guys just keep trying to get by on the cheap when it comes to the OL. it’ll bite them in the ass again this year if they go with Young and Davis. I truly hope we don’t. Larsen should be a backup too. This FO sucks at evaluating OL talent….or they simply don’t value it and think so-so is good enough. But hey….it’s not like you actually need a good OL to be successful in the NFL!

    • I agree. It’s time to stop fucking around with the o line and fix it already. We can’t go into the season penciling in guys who should be depth as starters just because they played some good snaps for us.

Like someone on here is so fond of saying, they were undrafted for a reason. hehehehe

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s still true with UDFAs. But when you a find a decent one don’t just write them off because of that. There are reasons players go in different rounds too.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What’s wrong with finding a UDFA who impressed and could develop and get better? The OL was in a flux before this FO. You don’t know what we’ll do this offseason. I don’t think Young isn’t a guy you pencil in, more as insurance. Davis could have surprising upside. Let’s see how he does instead of just writing him off just because he’s on the cheap. That’s the best case scenario if he pans out.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

^not a guy you pencil in.

      • nobody said anything about writing Davis off but he was an udfa for a reason. we need starters on the line; not backups. Davis should be developed. We need quality depth on the line as well as quality starters.

If one day Davis develops into a starting caliber player then that bodes well for us.

  9. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

FIX THE BLOODY O-LINE is RIGHT!!!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Everyone is saying that. I just think people write guys off because of their status. If Davis is part of an improved OL why would anyone care?

      • nobody is writing guys off because of their status. we’re just saying you can’t go into the season counting on an udfa as a starter on the o-line. if you had a competition and he won out then maybe you have something but it all depends on who he’s competing against.

So, if we draft a couple of guys and Davis wins out, that’s one thing but if they look at the situation with the line and think “well, we’ve got Davis at RG” then that’s idiotic.

  10. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, what if Davis wins a starting job in 2018 not by default but because he earned it? Did anyone care that Bess won a job and playing time as a UDFA because he earned it? Of course not. The competition figures it out.

I’m pretty sure OL will be an area we target this offseason. I’m not suggesting we’re good no reason to upgrade, I’m just mentioning options already in-house.

  13. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It would seem logical to me… being the Cowboys need a WR, to trade Jarvis for Lawrence, straight-up. Instead, we traded for ‘broken-back Quinn’ so fast that it’s likely not a possibility at this point. And that our greatest trade-partners — the Eagles — are shopping Vinny Curry now…

Tannenbaum drives me NUTS with his impulsive BS! 😡

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I truly believe they don’t want to trade Landry

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You think they’re just testing the market?

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Yes Tim that and trying to gain some leverage with Landry

      • they really don’t have a choice right now. it’s either trade or rescind the tag because they aren’t going to carry him on the books at the cost of the tag because it’s too high and we’d really need to make some moves to clear enough cap to keep him this year.

he’s either traded or the tag is rescinded and he’s a free agent. unless he comes crawling back at a much lower price because, at this time, I believe even the $13M/yr is off the table.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dude, Lawrence is going to get a big deal at some point. Curry isn’t anything special. Quinn will have to pass a physical before the trade goes through. The Cowboys may not want Landry. Talk about being impulsive. LOL

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think you’re missing my point, man.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not at all. FA hasn’t started and the door is still open on a lot of stuff. Your post closed it. That was impulsive in your desire to rag on Tannenbaum. Nothing is set in stone yet.

THAT is what I’m talking about… not the other stuff in your post.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’d be willing to bet that Quinn would have been a cap casualty, and that we could have signed him to OUR coin, and without trading a draft pick.

      • too many other teams interested in him you have to compete with and it drives up the price. smart move was to trade for him to avoid the free agency and then extend him to lower his cap hit this year.

plus, getting a 1st rd DE for a 4th rd pick? that’s a no brainer.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There were other teams interested in trading for him too. Maybe just maybe we want the player if he’s medically cleared. You really care about a 4th for a proven pass rusher? It’s as if the team can’t go about building their team their way, it has to fall in line with fanbase GMs. It gets crazy after awhile. We don’t know enough behind the scenes stuff. Why not go with the flow of the team rather than questioning everything they do based on your personnel preference. Nobody in the media, fans or anyone on this blog knows the outcome of anything we do this offseason. Unless we have a bunch of psychics here. LOL

It’s gone beyond discussing the team and the projection of what could be. It’s like a constant witch hunt.

  16. seriously, I’d rather try and get Miller or Kirk in the draft than keep Landry on the tag or give him an extension. Robinson is going to be a free agent and then there’s Jordan Matthews. I’d rather we go after one of those guys.

Maybe, just maybe is right. And as FA draws closer, we’re seeing more and more DEs with a good history being released as cap casualties… who we could sign at OUR price, not by giving up a draft pick(s) while buying up another team’s debt.

  21. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Yes sir! If Arizona doesn’t get their QB via F/A and one of the top QBs is available at 11 a trade down is possible.
In that scenario Miami gets 15 and Arizona’s 2nd. Then let’s say Seattle wants to trade up to 15 to get Mike McGlinchey so they can keep Russell Wilson alive this season, Miami gets 18 and Seattle’s 2nd or 3rd. Miami could then take position of need (should be an immediate starter at TE/interior OL available at 18), BPA, or even trade back again if they get an offer. I think this draft is shaping up a lot like 2013, not much elite talent early but plenty if impact in the later-half of the first & early 2nd.

$#!t, Bro! Many have yet to be cut being we haven’t even entered FA!

THIS is what I’m talking about regarding Tannenbaum being IMPULSIVE. Let it all play out.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And I think YOU — more so than anyone else — KNOWS what I’m talking about!!!

    • I’m just not seeing any DE’s that can be cap casualties that are a better option. Maybe that’s the way they looked at it. They most likely have access to everyone’s contract info and are looking at guys are free agents plus those who could become free agents and just felt trading for Quinn was their best option.

…We are lucky to be set with Tanny for now and have him on the relative cheap.
    ————–
That’s all a matter of perspective. Ya see… as Peter King noted (taking a page out of MY book), once Tannehill takes the field again in ’18, he’ll be closer to TWO years off the field. Admit, y’all thought I was being melodramatic until Peter King said it. SMH

AND… Tannehill is the #2 $$$/per, behind Suh on our Phins (and our bloated salary problems). “New QB $$$” or not, Tannehill will be one of the highest paid players in the NFL in ’18… even after Kirk Cousins signs a new deal.

Your “relative cheap” is all a matter of perspective. I’d say, we’re not so lucky when looking at production vs $$$.

  28. An AFC team offered a 2nd to Philly for Foles. Wouldn’t it be great?!!! hehehehe

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      A 2nd AND a 4th, the way I heard it.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If I was a betting man (I’m not), I’d say Foles isn’t going anywhere, he’s staying in Philly. They need him, and he’s in a good situation there. He may start the season, and Philly knows they have a competent backup in case Wentz isn’t ready, or has a setback

      • I said the same thing just after the SB. He’s too valuable to Philly at this time to let him go. Probably the reason the asking price is so high. They’ll let him go but it’s not going to be cheap to get him.

I really don’t think he wants to leave either. He’s found a home and that’s more important.

  29. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Haven’t we been thru this with Tannehill already? There’s no way we can trade him until he shows he’s healthy, and his knee isn’t an issue, and it would probably take at least the entire preseason to convince teams that was the case. In other words, he’s not getting traded.

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If we traded Tannehill to Winnipeg, sounds like we got pucked on that trade.

  31. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I’m all for swinging for the fences with drafting a QB. As I’ve said before, worse happens is RT stays QB..

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If we get one of the top guys (and not against) think it includes Tanny going elsewhere.

    • only one guy I’m interested in trading up for if it’s a qb. Rosen.
If we’re trading up to #8 with CHI it’s not going to get us a qb so it’s got to be one of the defensive players like Edmunds or Smith. I can’t see it being Nelson because we don’t value offensive linemen that much and guards even less.

  32. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Mike E — heck yeah Tanny has trade value. Even Prof Lou says he does. Maximizing what he is worth might be different — but we’ve all seen what he can do. And his contract would come with little guaranteed or much accumulated hit on ours. Think by far more likely is that they redo him and and make him our QB for the next 2 or 3 years while helping with our cap situation, but a tradeable asset he is.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You really think an NFL GM is going to trade for him w/o knowing how he plays on his knee? I don’t think there’s a shot in hell of that happening. He has value once he proves he’s healthy, and play like he did, not until then, IMO

  33. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

So who thinks the Steelersmare going to pay Bell north of $10M a year. Not this armchair GM.

  34. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Stanger and Prof Lou,

Tannehill’s trade-value has YET to be determined (IF he’s even being ‘dangled’), until he can show and prove that he’s recovered from a two-time knee injury that’s displaced him 21 months from the playing field.

Again, it’s ALL FUN AND GAMES when I say it, but when “little Peter” says it, it becomes so-called “REAL”. SMH

Ryan Tannehill is our starting QB for the ’18 season. Unless he has a setback, that’s not going to change.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

98% chance you are right that Tanny starts, but that other 2% is what the offseason is about. And he has real trade value, even if don’t think we tap into it unless we get one of the top guys. Maybe not franchise QB, but Tanny is trained and ready to lead a team. Only so many of those around. I don’t take ACL injuries nearly as serious these days, least not when it comes to QBs rather than RBs.

From @NFLTotalAccess: The #Steelers and RB Le’Veon Bell are not close to a deal… and he wants to be paid properly for his receiving exploits as well as being a RB.

He’s right though, he’s the best dual back in the game.

  53. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Bell is doing what Graham was doing saying he wanted WR money vs TE. It’s going to be interesting….I think Bell deserves to make at least as much as AB. He lead the league in touches as well. Dude is not your regular RB.

Yep! If he’s worth $16M is Landry?

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

        Lol. Nope!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right and nothing wrong with that. Landry is no more than $10-12M to me and that’s because he’s a high catch guy and tough player. He’s not a game breaker. His agent needs to come back down to earth. Even that is overpaying in my opinion but I get it.

  54. whether Tannehill starts or not the team either needs to sign a vet they can trust to run the offense or they need to draft a qb that they feel would be able to get up to speed on the offense quickly because…………

of the obvious. if he goes down again and they did a lot of work to get the team to where they want it before the season begins so they can be competitive then the whole year is shot again. that’s from their point of view, by the way. you all know how I feel about him so the season is shot anyway. lol

  55. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Here’s our cap with Landry on the franchise tag, the Quinn trade and no releases yet. Much will change in the next couple of weeks.

That said it’s not a great FA market and you get draft allocation. Simmer down on the cap, it’s never as bad as it seems. It really isn’t. Who are we losing or can’t re-sign because of it? Also who is it hampering us from signing? Anyone?!!!

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/cap/

    • you DON’T get draft allocation. it’s part of the cap!!

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

They added draft money into total….

I thought Timmons would not have any dead money because of his contract violation?

      • no they don’t. look at the allocation on the sidebar on the Spotrac site. they subtract the allocation from the total; not add it in.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Rookie compensation pool, it always works. 😉

      • the rookie compensation pool is part of the teams cap. you do not get that money in addition to what you have to spend on your cap. it is an amount you are allowed to spend on rookies per the cba. a team is allotted that amount based on projected draft picks. they are only allowed to spend so much on rookies.

again, the team doesn’t get any additional money to spend on the rookies. you subtract that rookie compensation pool from your total available cap to give you what you have remaining to spend elsewhere.

Many of what is on our books now can be relieved a bit and then in future years voided. Cap is not our issue, roster moves are. What will be the 53 on opening day? How does the team perform? I’m more interested in seeing our core of vets and young players jelling and what we do in the draft then FA dollars. I don’t think we’ll be big players anyway. Never did. Maybe plug a hole here and there until a young guy is ready.

Landry is our biggest obstacle and that will work itself out one way or the other.

People keep forgetting that if after 2018 if our team doesn’t have a good year, we can easily be a top cap team the next few years. Why are we concerned with 2019 and 2020? That doesn’t mean there is nothing to build on in 2018. Stay away from dark cloud, it’s a nasty fucker. 😉

  63. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

All the shit we talk about with this team with this move and that. It’s on Gase. He has to win again and show Ross he was the right choice. All this start over nonsense is just that. Not in 2018.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

we won’t be rebuilding this offseason

They got to get one sometime.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Has nothing to do with who we draft. Any position is open for BPA. We need a backup QB and developmental type anyway. The team is not being constructed to blow it up is all I’m saying. See the forest for the trees. 😉

      • Tim,
if what you say is true, that they’re not blowing it up this season, that they’re going out there to win then they are going to do it with a quarterback that gives them the best chance to do that and that quarterback isn’t tannehill.

this team will be aggressive and go up to get one of the quarterbacks in this draft and my money is on Rosen. tannehill may be in camp this year but when they get their qb in the draft he’s not going to be around much longer.

I don’t understand how they could want to try and build to win this year and stay with the status quo. tannehill doesn’t do anything for them if they’re going to try and win games and for Gase to show Ross he’s the right person for the job.

  64. Tim,
Landry’s leaving. So that creates a hole with our wr’s. What would you say if we traded Parker and signed Robinson and Jordan Matthews? You gotta admit that would be a lot better than what we’ve got now. So, I do believe you can “blow it up” without blowing it up.

I’m not saying the above scenario is going to happen or has any chance of happening but that’s an example of what I’m talking about. When people think of “blowing it up” they think you’re starting from scratch and that’s not necessarily true. You can blow it up and get better as well.

  65. So, what I’m saying is I think the Phins are looking at what Roseman did in Philly and are going to try and emulate that this offseason and, if they are going to put all those resources into getting the team “close” to try and win now then Tannehill doesn’t fit what they want to do. Win now. Because they aren’t going to win now with Tannehill.

  66. I would love for the team to target Robinson in free agency. He’s in Florida with the Jags and probably loves the warm weather an the lifestyle so we would probably have the upper hand in negotiations. He’s an outside guy so if we did decide to give Parker another shot then Stills could work inside. He’s very good at it.

In any case, Robinson would be one of my top targets in free agency.

BL – Stills does okay in the slot when he can use his speed to blow by the defender, but he is not making the tough catches across the middle. I think they roll with what they have, maybe sign an UDFA or a very late round pick.

As for Tannehill, he is at worst a slightly above average QB. Worse QB have won the Super Bowl. I also think they are going to draft one of the top 4 (Allen, Darnold, Rosen, Mayfield) and I’m okay with that. If they hit, awesome. If not, it’s just one a draft pick. No team lives or dies on one pick. But if they don’t at least try, they will never find that elite QB.

Personally, I think they want Mayfield for the fire he brings. Conversely, Rosen’s mouth may be a turn off for them (see my previous post on kneelers). I think they will take whichever of the four that is available whenever they pick. Whenever, because I don’t rule out a trade down.

So because many people have misunderstood (or chosen to not hear) the original intention of the protests, and because one very loud person has capitalized on that misunderstanding (or willful ignorance) and people have chosen to adopt that version, the Dolphins will not be sanctioning peaceful protest this year.

  72. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We really need to get rid of ProfLou. The dolphins will never win anything as long as he is a fan.
We can blow the whole thing up and start from scratch, but it won’t do anything as long as Lou is a fan. They can get the best QB in this draft and it would help the team as long as Lou is a fan.

We can get the best O line and tight end available in this draft, but it won’t matter. as long as Lou is a fan.

  73. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not sure I’d want to go all in on Allen Robinson. He had 1 year (2015) where he blew it up, both him and Allen Hurns tore it up, Robinson averaging 17+ per catch and Hurns 16+ per catch. Thing is, neither of them have come close to replicating that, so basically Robinson is putting up similar numbers to Landry, with less receptions, PLUS, he’s coming off an injury. So why pay Robinson what we don’t want to pay Landry?

  87. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

May I suggest that spending $11.4M on Robert Quinn and his back injuries (plus a 4th round Draft pick) would have been wiser spent on Andrew Norwell… who’s market value is $11.7M?

Now follow me… it seems clear that we don’t want to $pend on the Guard position. I think we’d rather pay ‘rookie contract $$$’ for a non-impact position such as Guard. Seems we have still have interest in trading up — using Jarvis Landry as the bait — with a WR-needy team like the Bears @ R1P8.

And the MORE we’re seemingly pounding the table for a QB, the MORE teams are going to want to get a QB before we select. This — coupled with Cousins looking like he’s going to Minny — could force 4 QBs to go before we’d select at R1P8 (assuming we trade up to the Bears).

So 4 QBs before us, plus Nick Chubb and Saquon Barkley going top-5, probably pushes a certain OG down to us, who’d otherwise and almost assuredly be off the board @ R1P11.

Let me cut to the chase: could we be targeting Quenton Nelson in a trade-up? I’m just trying to think outside of the box, here…

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Do you know Demarcus Lawrence has had two back surgeries? I’m mentioning it because you used him as an example yesterday when saying Tannenabaum was impulsive trading for Quinn.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

No, I didn’t know that about Lawrence. Interesting!

I still maintain that Tannenbaum was impulsive in trading for Quinn. There will be more acorns falling off the trees before it’s all said and done.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t think that’s outside the box at all, I think we’d love to be in a spot to get Nelson, but even being at #8 doesn’t make it a certainty

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If you are suggesting we trade Landry to get a better shot at drafting Nelson – I think that’s crazy

If we are going to trade Landry, trade him for picks

Do we really need Nelson like he is the holy grail
It would drafting Hernandez or Price help us address our interior OL

We need picks for Landry not to move up a few spots bc we are consumed with one particular player

The worst thing a GM can do is fall in love with 1 guy
Ricky Williams, when he was drafted by Ditka, is a great example of that
He ends up having a great career but the Saints regret that move

  88. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Speaking of the Bears…

  89. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

could we be targeting Quenton Nelson in a trade-up?

Why? He has been there in every mock draft I have done. (Being silly suggesting mock drafts have any bearing on real life)

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He’s in all my mocks too

But it’s realistic he won’t be come draft day
He is one of the premier players of the draft

But I think it’s silly to fall in love with one prospect
You got to have a few guys in the range you are picking

We can get interior OL in the 2nd, 3rd or even 4th round

  90. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, Norwell wasn’t coming to Miami. He has connections to the Giants with new GM Dave Gettleman and OC Mike Shula from Carolina.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Connections, conschmections… IF the price is right, that means NOTHING. And I think you’re missing my greater point: we can’t afford Norwell now that we’ve traded for Quinn.

I’m not trying to sound like a d!ck, I’m just sayin’ that the Norwell ship has sailed with trading for Quinn.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It wasn’t happening anyway. We will have more cap once we resolve some other issues.

  91. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – I don’t think we’d trade Landry in return for moving up 3 spots. It would have to be a player too, or another pick

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Also, at #8, you may have a shot at one of the QB’s, Tremaine Edmunds, Roquan Smith, so there would be a lot of good choices there.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think we’re going to get a lot of compensation for Landry. We just want to get something for him rather than let him walk. Maybe a 2nd or 3rd rd pick.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If you let him walk you will get a compensatory pick down the line anyway

        A 3rd round pick is a failure
You’ll get that back in a couple of years anyway

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Remember philly traded with us to move up
But that was players they wanted to get rid of
      Nothing like Landry caliber

      I don’t think so either
I would be furious if we did that and it doesn’t matter how good Nelson is
That’s a leap of faith of colossal leaping
