The Wedge Scouting Report: Christian Kirk, Texas A&M

(Wedge is crying by a fire)

I can’t believe they would do that to me!

Why!!!!

WedgeMourns

WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME DOLPHINS!!!

First Ajayi and now Landry…

What is a devastated Alien to do…

…Except talk about other draft prospects like Texas A&M receiver Christian Kirk

Kirk2

The Positives: A lot of experts are calling Kirk the best slot receiver in the draft.  He was very productive at Texas A&M in his three years there.  He caught over 80 passes in his first two seasons with the Aggies and his final season wasn’t half bad either with 66 catches.  Kirk cgained just below 2,800 yards in those three years and caught 26 TDs.

The Texas A&M offense isn’t the most explosive offense – but Kirk was used a lot of different ways.  He went deep, ran a ton of bubble screens, was used on reverses (he had 21 total carries for 121 rushing yards) and was a kick returner on special teams.

Kirk has solid hands.  Not a lot of bad drops on his tape.  His hands measured in at 9 7/8ths at the combine.

But Kirk’s biggest strength like a certain recently departed Dolphins was gaining yards after the catch – YAC!  Kirk made a lot of defenders look silly with broken tackles and poor guesses.  Kirk is a strong runner and a strong player – he had the 4th best bench press reps among receivers at the combine.  So you can see why Kirk as a slot receiver seems like natural fit.

Kirk5

The Negatives:  Well the first thing I should point out:  WHY DO WE NEED A RECEIVER?!?!?  This gripe is not about Kirk as a player, its about the loss of Landry which this alien just can’t get over.  I thought I was done begging the Dolphins to draft receivers but….

Kirk isn’t a big receiver (5’10) and while he had a respectable 40 yard dash at 4.47, that does not put him in the class of an elite speed demon.  Kirk is notable for his lateral quickness but not his vertical speed.  There are some questions as to whether he can stretch the field at the next level.

Kirk4

The Alien Dust:  The Dolphins have a lot of needs but drafting a player like Kirk can go a long way in replacing Jarvis Landry.  And when push comes to shoe, Kirk might be better at stretching the field than Landry ever once.

The big issue is do the Dolphins spend a high pick on a receiver?  Kirk can go anywhere between mid first to early 3rd.  If the Dolphins trade down in the first round or Kirk is available into the 2nd round – I think he might be a viable pick (if the Dolphins have not signed another receiver in free agency)

Kirk6

Well it’s not the most devastating weapon – but right now, right now I just need Christian Kirk to be my handkerchief.

(Wedge begins to cry again)

So glad we freed up all that cap space so we can make these quality signings

  2. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    Does Wilson + Amendola + a 4th = Landry?

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Maybe Wilson + Amendola + 4th RD pick > Landry

    somebody’s happy!

    Maybe this is why?

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I really think our moves on offense will be about spreading the ball around more to all positions. Not relying on a bell cow.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Completely necessary. We need to have a lot of weapons. Defense can’t just key on stopping one guy

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right. The same thing when an offense is built around a stud RB and say a WR. If those guys get shutdown or can’t play the offense sputters. You want to be able to hit teams with multiple options all day long.

  7. Ken's avatar Ken says:

We are going to suck so bad this year

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I give up – tried 3 different ways — you can hit on the link though. Key point is Tanny has his new safety valve.

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Tanny has to speak up with “this is my team” approvals. 🙂 Maybe he’s nervous about his cap hit. lol

  8. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Nothing has stopped Gase from spreading the ball around since he got here besides Gase. He calls the plays and created the offense.

The #Jets are working on a deal for QB Teddy Bridgewater, source said. It is not his only option. But it is their first choice.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s not about calling the plays, it was about personnel. Ajayi wasn’t a good receiver out of the backfield and we lacked the production at TE. I see our backs and TE being more of a factor in the passing game along with the WR rotation. We still need to land that TE and another back though.

  9. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Amendola?? now we go out and get TWO receivers right off the bat. I did NOT see that coming. lol

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

For a price that we could have signed Landry to and he is better than both of them combined

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You’re overrating Landry’s impact. His production can be replaced easily. It’s the old Buddy Ryan saying, yeah he had a 1,000 yards rushing, on a 1,000 carries. LOL

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

And you are under valuing Landry’s contribution to this offense. For 4 years in row he has been among the league leaders in catches. That doesn’t happen by accident. He is targeted so much because he gets open.

  12. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

    Wyoming,
based on your copy of the Twitter quoting Gase… I guess we can stop talking about drafting Nelson (?)

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I really don’t what to believe?
I’m just throwing shit against the wall to see if it sticks!

(But I’m taking smith if he’s there before Nelson)

  13. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

NFL Network’s Dan Hellie reports Amendola is expected to sign with the Miami Dolphins, per a source informed of the situation. Good Morning Football’s Peter Schrager adds that the deal is for two years and is worth $12 million with $8.25 million in guarantees.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000920951/article/danny-amendola-expected-to-sign-with-dolphins

  14. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

“2.5 seconds and 10 yards from LOS” …

that’s not Tanny’s game. But it sounds like Mayfield’s game…. here is a quote from nfl.com’s analysis of his strengths:
“Light on his feet with quick setup in pocket. Has good pre-snap plan. Eyeballs and eliminates safeties to isolate man coverage on his receiver. Quick processor from read to read. Responds suddenly to what is there. Pitch and catch accurate if you allow it. Underrated arm talent. Expedite from off-platform with tight release and zip. “

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I thought of this too to be honest, but how do we get Mayfield?

      • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Hope Keenum is the Broncos starter, hope Bridgewater is Jets starter… That leaves Browns and Giants (I wouldn’t be surprised if they take Barkley if available), and maybe Bills jumping up.
Getting Broncs and Jets off the QB hunt would give us a clear shot (minus an aggressive move up by a team)

  15. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Amendola made $1.7 last year with Pats.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He took a significant pay cut to stay with the Pats last year. He previously made about $6M per. I agree his contract is a bit high but still not in the insane realm of many other WRs.

  16. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Everything is starting to come together. I love watching a well laid plan come to fruition. It’s a thing of beauty.

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, you know I’ve had that opinion of Landry for quite some time. It’s okay to disagree. But I don’t think Landry’s catch number is that impressive. He never made us an explosive offense but wants to be paid like he is. I wish him well in CLE.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s about the end results. If we have a bad year it doesn’t matter if it was the OL or something else or a combination of things, there could be big changes in 2019.

signing 2 cheap wideouts = more injury protection, more legs to stay fresh, more targets to move around, more various strengths to exploit, a hyper speed guy + a wily veteran, less money spent

winwin winwin winwin … wait … isn’t it about sinning?

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      LOL “Isn’t it about winning?”
Although modeling oneself on Bellichick might also be about sinning
      as in bending the rules.

  27. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Mike, it’ll be easier to tell you what I like than what I hate.

I think the cheerleaders are going to have a fantastic year, and I hear concessions at the stadium are going to be lights out (not that I’ll know being on the west coast and all).

And I guess, even with things the way they are, we’ll probably stay away from 0-16…so there’s that.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ouch! I don’t share your bleak outlook at all, but I’ve been wrong before.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

At this point I am so jaded, until I see actual results, I can’t help but believe we are spinning our wheels. I would be thrilled to be proven wrong. I will say I’m glad to get out from under Suh, and his ridiculous contract. And I’m glad we didn’t pay Landry something just as dumb.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Cav — didn’t know you were a left coast guy. Always assumed you were from where the red birds fly. Where you set? And we’ve had plenty of folks from that far to the Fest. Guess where Manitoba comes from. 🙂

  28. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

signing these gnats on the cheap means we don’t need to waste a draft pick on an unknown because WR is one of the most uncertain of all draft picks.

We KNOW these two guys can play in the NFL.

  29. I’m good with what we’ve been doing to this point and what has been said about what we still may do. My only issue at this time is, based on the type of offense it appears we will be running, we don’t have a quarterback who could execute those plays.

This offense is going to require a guy who can make quick decisions with the ball and get it out fast; not hold it so long that he ends up taking a sack.

I figured we’d sign someone who could at least challenge Tannehill if we’re keeping him but THAT doesn’t even look like it’s going to be the case and I doubt we’re trading up for one now that we’re letting go of Suh. We’re going to need to go DT in the first rd. There are no good DT’s beyond that.

My only hope is we draft two qb’s and go with someone like Benkert and Woodside.

  30. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just rolling with what we’re doing but still won’t have a gut feel on this team until after the draft. I think more moves are coming.

  31. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

MikeE… some mocks are updating after today’s signings…. WalterFootball now has Miami taking Mayfield at #11 (just updated).

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rhino – I think Mayfield would be an exciting pick for our team, but I don’t believe The Jets aren’t going to still draft a QB, and although i’d be surprised, the Broncos may also. If that happens, we’re not getting him.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. There is also a lot of negative stuff about Rosen that isn’t character based but durability and concussion concerns. So Mayfield may have jumped him.

  33. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Stanger,
I am in Sacramento. I’m a redbirds fan because as a child I watched them in the Series, and I liked their uniforms. A rather silly way to pick a team, but I have been fiercely loyal to them ever since, so I guess it’s as valid as anything else, lol.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Been to Sacramento three or four times, but only on business. Seemed like a good place to live. And I picked the Bucs for close for the same reason…..thought Pirates were way cool.

  34. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

My Steelers buddy texted me before, he said the Phins are easily the most active teams in FA of all time. lol

  35. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It was nice to stop in. I will probably pop back in a few more times this offseason in preparation for another heart-wrenching season of 6-10. But who knows, maybe with a few more moves, outstanding coaching, and a couple of breaks, we can reach the exalted land of 8-8. Lot of offseason left to be played.

    Cheers, fellas.

  36. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Cheers Kong!

  37. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No one responded to my question. Wyo posted a tweet about the patriots trying to sign Suh. Has he been released yet? Can they actually talk to him if he hasn’t been released?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve seen nothing about any of that.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Theyre the Pats. They can do what they want. I have a hard time believing they sign him though. He’s not a Belichick player. I could eat my words though.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      No way
      That would be tampering

Once he released they can speak with him bc we are in the legal tampering period now

But they can talk to the Dolphins about a trade before he is released

That’s might be the basis of the rumor if it’s credible
It might just be bs too

  38. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I mentioned earlier that Amendola was likely signed as a leadership guy as well as his own production. He’s also been around winning.

Jeff Darlington @JeffDarlington 44m44 minutes ago
Context on Amendola: Dolphins were hot on him internally before free agency started. They see him as a great fit on and off field. Key factor will be managing health. Belichick preserved him for playoffs. Miami not in position to do that, but Gase good at managing bodies in camp.

  39. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jimmy Graham signing with the Pack.

  40. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Between Amendola and Wilson I guess we won’t be adding anymore receivers

I can’t say I really understand either move

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I can understand you not liking it but not understanding it seems to reek of Landry sadness. LOL

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

How many games has Amendola played in in the last few years?

I actually mocked the patriots for signing him a few years ago. The good news is we are deep at receiver – but if you sign Amendola, you better be signing more than 1 wr

  41. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I can see it now, just like people are still talking about Ajayi they’ll be talking about Landry for at least another two years. LOL

  42. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – We DID sign more than 1 receiver

  43. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Let me guess, we could have given Landry that money?

  44. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Hah hah

  45. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, if no Bridgewater, Jets are 100% drafting a QB

  46. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think Carroo is getting cut, and I think Parker is either getting traded, or this is his last season in MIA.

  47. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

With our luck, we keep Parker, and he has a great season, and then we either can’t sign him, or we give him a huge contract, and he goes back to the old Parker

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Or he leads the league in catches and we franchise him and then trade him for a 4th rounder and a 7th

      Hah hah
(Piggy laughs himself into the fetus position)

  48. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh man these silly Landry vs. other player debates are going to go on for fucking ever, I can see it now. Just move on, you’re not building the team. If it doesn’t pan out and we don’t win there will be new people in charge. That’s how it works.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t understand why you are willing to take a bite from the giant shit sandwhich you are being served

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Because not everyone is as emotionally attached to Landry like some of you are. I don’t think he’s an elite player and we added slot guys at a more affordable rate. It’s not that complicated. You’re creating your own giant shit sandwich. You’re shooting shit down before you ever see it on the field. I’m more excited about Wilson than Amendola by the way.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t know why you think the driving force is an emotional attachment to Landry instead of just recognizing mismanagement

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Doesn’t mean we have to like it Tim

  49. Ken's avatar Ken says:

According to NY Post in addition to signing McCown the Jets are talking to Bridgewater and are still likely to draft a QB round 1

  50. Nobody’s trying to replace Landry with these players that were signed. They don’t need to. With the additions of Wilson and Amedola it gives them a lot more flexibility on offense than they had in the past and won’t be targeting one guy 150+ times a season to go 6-10.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

They won’t be targeting Amendola at all in games he will be inactive

You keep saying it likes it’s Landry’s fault he was open and other players weren’t…lol

      • the narrative that other players weren’t open is just so off the mark that I can’t even go there.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Okay I guess the narrative controlled where the QB threw the pass too

        Get serious dude…

      • you need to get over the Landry thing. the more we threw him the ball the less there was a chance of us winning. it had nothing to do with Landry getting open and the other wr’s not being able to get open.

it had to do with the design of the offense. that’s about to change.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If the design of the offense was a problem – blame the people who designed it. Landry is stuck making the best of that design which he did.

You would t blame the people who bought a house for the way the architect designed it

      • what does that have to do with anything? what I’m saying is the offense wasn’t designed properly. that doesn’t make Landry any more important in the new offense than he was before. In fact, it makes him even less important if they plan on spreading the ball around more.

why would you pay a slot wr all that money if you’re not going to be targeting him as much as you did before? doesn’t make any sense. if some other team wants to make a slot wr the focus of their offense then let them go ahead and do it.

I like the idea that we’re going to be going away from that and spreading the ball around to more guys. It gives us a much better chance to be successful on offense. I’ve been saying this for quite some time.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think it has more to do with the lack of talent than the design of the offense. The year before our OL was better, we ran the ball consistently and we stretched the field vertically through the air. Last year our OL was a horror show, we didn’t run well except towards the end of the season and Cutler was horrible. With OL playing the way it did was target the underneath routes the way we did and Landry excels in that. The year before we had better ball distribution and had higher yards per catch all across the receiving corps

  52. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I knew Tannebaum couldn’t keep from spending what little we’ve saved ASAP. He didn’t want the high cost of Landry, but the high cost on a rarely used GA St product and Mr. Injury sounded better. I don’t mind losing Suh, Landry, Tannehill, Pouncey, whoever they want to jettison. But Tannebaum was the guy who brought Suh in. He’s the guy who screwed up in FA since he’s gotten here. He’s the guy with a history of screwing up.

That does concern me. Wilson wasn’t going to be offered anywhere near $24 million by anyone else. Amendola wasn’t going to get $6 from anyone else. Suh was;t going to get the $60 mill in 3 years he got here…anywhere else. It’s called mismanaging your budget and Tannenbaum does that every year. You can’t compete if you can’t manage your roster. He can’t and we don’t. Gase is trying to winning a race with one working leg. I wish him luck.

  65. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I can say with all honesty that I expected us to be real quiet in FA, maybe sign an OL. I completely didn’t expect that we would sign 2 WR’s. I’m not sure I even understand it, and that has nothing to do with either of the WR’s we signed. As far as the salary thing that New Age brought up, I think he’s not looking at all other signings, like Sammie Watkins for $16M per. The prices have gone up, so to say no one was giving, that simply isn’t accurate. Anyway, I’m willing to see what happens, not getting myself upset about it, just see how everything falls into place.

BTW – If Sammie Watkins is worth $16M, how can the Steelers NOT pay LeVeon Bell $16M per?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

To me the WRs we signed has to do with strategy but it could also be a sign we might be down on Carroo and who knows how we feel about Parker, and we have to decide on his 5th year option.

The thing is, how is Sammie Watkins elite? What has he done besides been an impressive prospect? His NFL career consists of one 1000 yard season out of 4, and he’s never had 10 TD’s. What I’m saying is, look at what Le’Veon Bell produces, and look at what Watkins produces. bell has nearly as many receiving yards as Watkins has (about 300 less) but Bell has over 5300 yards rushing to along with that, plus 42 TD’s compared to 25 for Watkins.

We know who some of the other guys are that are in the mix, but nothing set at guard yet.

  80. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    My takes for today’s moves…

    – I like Albert Wilson, but I don’t like his contract (3 YRS/$24M), his size (5’9″), and I’m wondering why KC didn’t try to re-sign him if he’s so good. But I do think he’ll bring some electricity to our WR corps. He reminds me a bit of Jakeem Grant, only more powerful.

    – Danny Amendola… are you kidding me? This signing (coupled with Wilson) gives me a good idea of what we’re trying to do in ’18, and that’s to spread the ball around. But ya mean to tell me that we don’t already have a guy in-house that ya can spread the ball around to? His contract isn’t terrible… if he can stay healthy.

    – Ja’Wuan James at nearly $10M (honoring his 5th-year option after injury)? He had better be COMPLETELY healthy now. He’s coming off his second time in 3 years that he only managed to play half a season (toe and hamstring injuries). I’m happy that we’re not creating another need at the RT position (especially in this WEAK draft-class for Tackles), but that’s a lot of $$$ for an injury-plagued player. But all-in-all, I’m happy we’re retaining Ja’Wuan.

    • where the wr’s are concerned I’m looking at it as we need to have guys who can transition us to the new offense and that’s what both of these guys do. Grant should see some more action this season but Still and Parker are the only two vets on the team and Parker, being what he is, may be the odd man out.

We needed some veteran leadership other than Stills at wr and that’s what Amendola gives us because Parker doesn’t give us that. So, we’ve got some young guys in Carroo, Grant, Ford and Morgan who should get a shot to show what they can do and develop and Morgan being the technician of the group is probably the guy who looks to be taking snaps from Amendola somewhere down the road.

Amendola can probably teach him some things as well. But, I’m looking for some big things from this group as the season goes on and, like I said, I think we’re looking at a transition to an offense that spreads it around to multiple weapons and utilizes more of the talent we’ve got on offense than in the past. That, more than anything IMO, is what made Landry expendable.

I have a serious question, regarding all of the ‘targeting’ of Jarvis Landry over the years…

Did Jarvis Landry carry a super, top-secret football magnet with him, hiding it under his pads, where the ball automatically changed directions, putting it in his hands so often?

What I mean is… why didn’t we ever try to spread the ball around BEFORE??? Is Gase to blame regarding his play-calling, especially on those short, designed bubble-screens to Jarvis 100 times a game… or are Tannehill AND Cutler (BOTH!) to blame for insubordination to Gase’s play-calling?

Seriously THINK about what I’m saying, here…

TE and RB who couldn’t catch.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Half of his targets should have gone to a TE or a RB, but they didn’t have any who could get open and catch the ball.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

When you got 2 sec’s to get the ball out your check down looks pretty good!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, I’ll take a shot at this. First of all, You have to blame all the other receivers, and lack of a TE. It’s not Jarvis Landry’s fault that what he does best is run short routes near the LOS, and therefore is open or easier to hit, because he’s closer. I’m not saying he can’t run deeper routes, but that’s not what he does best. It’s also not our fault for not wanting to pay him more than $13.,5M because that’s what he does best

    • or when you have a qb who’s terrible at going thru progressions and can’t read a D he just goes with his blankey

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve thought about it a lot. Ajayi not being a reliable receiver or blocker, dynamic runner though. OL issues for sure. Lack of TE production. I felt Landry became a crutch and that’s why he caught so much short stuff and he became sort of a hero for an offense still trying to find itself. But it didn’t put a lot of points on the board, at least consistently.

I think it’s fair for Gase to give it two years and then say nope, not working like this. We’re not making it a cow bell offense either. I think more speed and quickness is a big factor.

Now we have to go find that TE.

  88. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Phelon,
The team offered James a long term deal that was team friendly. James chose not to sign it, so the team kept him on his 5h year option. He’ll be a FA next season, I assume. That’s how I read the article.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Ah….I only read the one that said they had offered. Thanks. Armando’s also says he is playing on the 5th year option money. Hopefully, they get something worked out quickly

  89. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Making quick reads, precise passes with good ball placement and getting the ball out very quickly is exactly the sort of offense people are suggesting we’re going to run. We want our QB getting the ball out quickly. The whole idea behind not valuing OGs is because you really only need guys who can hold a block for a couple seconds…but can they run block? It’s a TE centric offense like NE. with short, precise routes, picks, rubs and sneak a seam pass in there as ya go. Teams have done it for years. They just get away with a lot more picks and rubs these days. You need a field general who has great ball placement(Montana, Brady) to really make it work it’s best. If these quick little guys aren’t being hit in stride, it’s much easier to stop them and hit them hard. Also, NE is also usually an effective running team. They’re not always great but are effective. We aren’t.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

That’s why I think they want Mayfield. Just don’t see how they get him without trading way down.

    • I think the key to the whole thing is going to be the guy who can get the ball out quickly to the wr’s and te’s. That is a big part of helping to make the run game effective. When the D can’t stack the box because you’re moving the ball well in the passing game because, if they do you’ve got guys who can take it the distance or at least for a long game, then you’re running game will be that much better.

But, again, the key is going to be the qb has to get it done. I don’t know so much that we’ve got that guy on the roster right now. Maybe before FA is over we will have a better indication.

  90. Bridgewater is signing a one year deal w/the jets. I don’t know what he’s thinking. I guess I’m glad we didn’t sign him because he must have suffered some dain bramage as part of that leg injury.

  91. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Didn’t know this?

  92. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Phelon, Wyoming, Mike E, and Prof Lou,

All good points by y’all. I tend to agree with Wyoming… that our O-Lines have been so porous, we’ve had to get rid of the ball to the underneath receiver quickly, who’s been Jarvis.

It’s not anyone’s fault, IMO, except for the fact that our O-Line has been so weak.

So whether it be 2.0 seconds (by pressure) or 2.5 seconds that our QB is instructed to get rid of the ball (which seems to be what we’re gearing toward this year), are we going to be able to spread the ball as we wish? Or as Prof Lou infers (and I hear him, too)… do we have the right QB under Center to do this?

It would seem that we’re going to neglect the O-Line again this year because we don’t need them to block for 3.0+ seconds, when the ball is to be out far earlier in this Offense.

IMO, Tannehill is going to find a new ‘go-to’ (can’t blame him!) receiver. And when that receiver is targeted so often (just as Jarvis had been), we’re going to wash, rinse, and repeat this whole thing.

We’ve GOT to address the O-Line, gentlemen. Give our receivers time to run their routes, open holes for our RBs, and give Tannehill a CHANCE to scan other receivers. Hey, we had Cutler last year instead of Tannehill, and the EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED… he had to get rid of the ball quickly and Jarvis was open.

Additionally, I feel we threw so many bubble-screens to Jarvis (or anybody else) to get rid of the ball before our porous O-Line could kill our QB. Tannehill went down in ’16, and Cutler got his ribs broken due to our lack of O-Line.

I think you all had good answers, by the way!

Book ends and a Center (So far at least) We can pick up another OG in the draft and we have Asiata and Davis.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Let’s see what progress Asiata made this offseason. He seems to be hard working. Hope for the best!

    • I think it has just as much to do with the qb as anything else. If you’ve got a qb who the defense doesn’t fear, doesn’t think can beat you, they’re not going to give a shit. They know he has trouble with his reads, progressions. They know he holds the ball too long.
They’re aware of all his weaknesses. So they play the percentages and it works. It’s that simple. There’s no mystery to it but people try to make more of it than there is.

We saw when Cutler got in trouble last season he’d throw the ball at the feet of a back, wr, te or whomever to avoid the sack and live for another down. Doesn’t put us back another 10 yds taking the sack making it easier to convert. Our starting qb has never had the awareness to do something like that. It’s just one of the many issues he still has in his game even after being a starter in the league for 6 yrs.

And, IMO, if he is the starter this season the experiment with the new offense will fail because it needs a qb capable of making quick decisions and who can get the ball out quickly to run it and he can’t do it.
