2018 NFL Draft – Running Backs

The defense has been covered, and finally, we’re going to look at some offensive players.  The first installment is the running backs.  We recently signed long time all pro running back Frank Gore to a 1 YR contract.  We found out we have a very talented ballcarrier in 2nd YR player Kenyan Drake after we traded away Jay Ajayi.  Drake surpassed Ajayi’s production last year, finishing the season with 644 yards rushing on 133 carries with a nice 4.8 YPC and 3 rushing TD’s.  In addition, Drake caught 32 passes for 239 yards and 1 receiving TD.  The thing that worries me about Drake is durability.  I’m not convinced Drake is a 300+ carry back, but going by the way Gase has used his RB’s at each stop, he seems to prefer a stable of backs, with staggered use.  One back will get more carries, but it’s not a big ratio, maybe less than 2:1.  I’m pretty sure we will be drafting a RB in this draft, and it might even be as early as the 2nd or 3rd RD.   DEN recently released RB C.J. Anderson, who played for Gase while he was the OC in Denver.  If we sign Anderson, that would really push RB to the back burner in this draft, but at this point, it hasn’t happened, and it may not happen at all.  So let’s see who is out there in this draft!  This is in no particular order by the way . . .

Sony Michel  5’11 220  Georgia

rose-bowl-football-6ea7b193c2c5638a

Considered by some as this year’s Alvin Kamara.  Smooth runner who catches the ball very well out of the backfield.  Played in 8 games as a true Freshman, he became a starter his Sophomore year at Georgia.  His Senior season was his best, finishing with 1227 yards and 16 TD’s facing the best competition in the SEC.  After watching kamar last year, I would swear he must have ran a 4.3 at the combine, but like Sony Michel, he ran a 4.54.  Michel is not the “power back” type some are looking for, in fact, his skill set isn’t all that different than Kenyan Drake’s.  He runs with good vision and find open spaces and has the patience to let blocks develop (Unlike Ajayi!)  Michel is rated at 5.91 by NFL.com and is expected to go around RD 2.  He’s probably either the 3rd or 4th back taken, behind Barkley, Guice and maybe Ronald Jones.

**********************************************************************************

Rashaad Penny 5’11 220   San Diego State

9301359_web1_20160910-073-20kickofftd-8x101

Talk about production! No running back was more productive than Rashaad Penny in 2017.  2248 yards on a very NFL like workload of 289 carries and 23 TD’s.  Plus, he added another 135 yards receiving on 19 receptions and another 2 TD’s, for a total of 25 offensive TD’s.  Unbelievable!  Penny ran a quick 4.46 at the combine, but the vertical jump and the bench press were a little disappointing.  The biggest knock on Penny, fair or unfair, is the level of competition he faced at SD State in the Mountain West Conference.  Penny is also expected to be a taken around the 2nd RD, and in my mind, I’ve reserved RD 2 for a TE.  Penny was rated at 5.85 by NFL.com

***********************************************************************************

Bo Scarbrough  6’1 232  Alabama

scarbrough-bo-123116-usnews-getty-ftr_mr4c0tg2i8rs1u1yj4oc52ijj

Here’s a big boy for ya!  Scarbrough is eerily similar to Derrick Henry, who also played for Alabama, but mostly because of the size.   While Scarbrough is a couple of inches shorter, he’s still a tall back at 6’1, and weighs just about 10 lbs less than the larger Henry.  Unlike Henry though, Scarbrough was just a part of the stable at Alabama, while Henry was the workhorse.Bo’s best season was actually his Sophomore year, where he tallied 812 on and 11 TD’s on 125 carries.  Scarbrough is a good short yardage specialist who can push the pile for a big first down, and has great explosion and leaping ability to get that TD, Scarbrough ran a 4.52 at the combine, along with a very impressive 40″ vertical and 129″ broad jump.  Scarborough will be a mid to late RD pick, somewhere between RD 4-6.  At the moment, we don’t have a 5th RD pick, but we do have two 4th RD picks, so it’s feasible.

*************************************************************************************

Kalen Ballage 6’1 227  Arizona State

kalen_ballage_utah-620x370

Another big back, and also, another part time player.  You could look at the fact that these guys are part time players 2 ways, one that they are talented enough to warrant a workhorse role, or two, that they have fresh legs and plenty of mileage left for whatever NFL team drafts them.  Ballage is a talented back who moves very well for a big back, and has excellent hands and can play on all 3 downs in the NFL.  He’s also a kick returner, so that versatility is definitely a plus.  Just to illustrate how good a receiver he is, his Junior season he had 126 carries for 536 yards and 14 TD’s and 44 receptions for 469 yards and 1 TD.  Ballage ran a 4.46 at the combine, and this Swiss army knife is expected to be drafted around the 3rd or 4th RD.  Ballage is rated at 5.46 on NFL.com

**********************************************************************************

Nick Chubb  5’11 228  Georgia

USP NCAA FOOTBALL: TENNESSEE AT GEORGIA S FBC USA GA

Did someone ask for a power back???  You know who you are, and this guy may be the back you’re looking for.  Chubb is a powerful north south runner who can break tackles to get more yardage and move a pile.  Chubb was the thunder while Michel was the lightning.  Chubb finished his Senior year with 1345 yards on 223 carries with 15 TD’s.  he has been the bellcow at Georgia since his Freshman year.  Chubb performed very well at the combine, running a 4.52, putting up 29 reps of 225, an impressive 38.5″ vertical and 128″ broad jump.  He has tremendous lower body power, an important factor for being a power runner, and he has the upper body strength to push off would be tacklers.  Chubb is expected to go around RD 2, which is a tough RD for us, because I have that round reserved for our new TE, thank you!  Chubb is rated at 5.79 on NFL.com

***************************************************************************************

So that’s my 5, and there were some tough cuts to be sure, like Royce Freeman, Kerryon Johnson,  Ronald Jones and a few others.  I didn’t include Saquon Barkley or Derrius Guice, because I think both will be 1st RD picks.  Next up is TE’s, and I may actually have to do a combo article of TE’s and WR’s, we’re running out of time with the draft being next Thursday!  OMG, that’s only a week away!

    Subject: FW: My retired friend

After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Walmart. Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women – she loves to browse.

Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from the local Walmart

    Dear Mrs. Woolf,

Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Woolf, are listed below and are “documented by our video surveillance cameras”:

    1. June 15: He took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people’s carts when they weren’t looking.

    2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-
    minute intervals.

    3. July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the
    women’s restroom.

    4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official
voice, ‘Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away’. This caused the
employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted in management getting involved causing management to lose time and costing the company money.

    5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to reserve a bag of
    chips.

    6. August 14: Moved a ‘CAUTION – WET FLOOR’ sign to a carpeted area.

    7. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the
children shoppers they could come in if they would bring pillows and
blankets from the bedding department – to which twenty children
    obliged.

    8. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began
crying and screamed, ‘Why can’t you people just leave me alone?’
    Emergency Medics were called.

    9. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose.

    10. September 10: While handling guns in the Sports department, he
asked the clerk where the antidepressants were.

    11. October 3: Darted around the Store suspiciously while loudly
humming the ‘ Mission Impossible’ theme.

    12. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his ‘Madonna look’ by using different sizes of funnels.

    13. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed
through, yelled ‘PICK ME! PICK ME!’

    14. October 22: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed the fetal position and screamed ‘OH NO! IT’S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!

    15. Took a box of condoms to the checkout clerk and asked where the fitting room was.

    And last, but not least:

    16. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited
awhile, and then yelled very loudly, ‘Hey! There’s no toilet paper in
here.’ One of the Staff passe

Mike E — awesome insight into these RBs. There will be an RB coming our way in the first five picks unless they sign Anderson. And draft is supposed to be deep in them. Always been a fan of the Broncos’ draft a bunch relatively low and sort them out later approach. And guessing at least one person in Davie has some experience with that.

Can’t say the guy is wrong (this time at least). Browns and Jets take two of the of the four is guaranteed. Bills are the biggest trade up candidate for one there is and won’t let one slip past them if they do not. Not sure if we would either. And my sneaking suspicion is that the Pats are ready to move up for one, even if might be bottom feeding on the 4th dropper.

    @AllbrightNFL
It’s very possible that three of the “big 4” QBs in this draft end up in the AFC East.

Does he really believe that New England will move up to get one of the QB’s? …..

  24. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I was doing a mock draft earlier today and kept getting screwed. I do my mocks on fanspeak because it’s the only site I know, but I swear #11 sucks! “All the good players” are gone by then and you can’t trade down in the non-upgraded fanspeak on the clock.

If Oakland doesn’t take one of the top two LB’s in the real draft I will be floored, because every mock I do they take him right before I get to pick and leave me with one of the 4 bust QB’s or the DT or a second round graded O-linemen (second round grade before the combine and FA started)

I disagree. It gives us a shot at more of the top prospects.

But you of all people, who agrees with me that you should build through the draft for long term success shouldn’t think that throwing away 2nd round picks is smart. we need MORE 2nd and 3rd round picks not less. otherwise we will ALWAYS be overspending in free agency or hoping other teams cast offs work out for us.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The only position I would trade up to #5 for would be QB. We’re going to get a very good player at #11, so I agree, no reason to trade up

I’m not a huge fan of trading 2nd rd picks but if it’s for a prospect you really like and have a vision for, and believe he makes your team better, go for it. Getting McMillan back is kind of like having a 2nd rd pick because we didn’t have him last year.

The schedule comes out tonight, right? That means tomorrow it’s time to start picking the Fest date. Not that it’s important or anything . . . lol

  70. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – No, I wouldn’t trade up for Nelson. I do think he’ll be a lot like Steve Hutchinson, but We need our picks. Take the best player at #11, then get that damn TE!

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We have needed a flippin TE for so long, I am only half kidding when I say I’d trade the entire draft for a guaranteed stud at TE.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s like the Browns with a QB. They’ve been near #1 almost every year, and they STILL don’t have a friggin QB. I pray we get out stud TE this year, it has to happen

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

So true. And it’s never a good thing when your team can be compared to the Browns on any level. 🙂
Fingers crossed we get it taken care of!

I still occasionally vote for the Jet’s game on the poll that is still up from last year.

There are 32 votes for last year’s poll now, though I didn’t come last year, I’m pretty sure 32 didn’t come. (or even the 21 that voted for the jet’s game)

Tannenbaum and Grier are live and Grier said TE is a deep group and so is LB especially mid and late rounds.

He also said BPA for them is based on the Dolphins roster, not what others say it is.

I’ll bury MTP deep in the ground in Jersey if he takes a “deep” TE in RD 5.

MIke E — “time to start picking the Fest date” is right on target. Hopefully we can at least sort out what the possible dates are before the draft and then take it from there soon after. We already have a deposit down, but you that just gets you on the list for a given game once you know which game it is.

That would be something MTP would do, especially because we don’t have a 5th round pick.

My boss has the worst ADD possible. You can’t write him an e-mail with multiple subjects in it. you have to break it up into each subject and then sometimes even break up the subject into several e-mails. If you are talking to him he will just drift off of start looking at his phone.

you can hear SQUIRREL!! being yelled throughout my office at any given time. it is a running joke.

His nickname since high school has been Rocky and everyone calls him Rocky. He thought we were referring to Rocky the flying squirrel and I had to break it to him (well, I didn’t HAVE to break it to him, I wanted to be the one who did, LOL) that he is like a dog with his attention span and the squirrel is just the distraction.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Then everyone in my office has it too. You send an email with 3 questions in it, and lucky to get one answered.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Exactly! He will read and answer the first. Then you will see him and say hey, you never answered my question and he’ll be like you never asked me that. Ummm yeah, I asked you x, y & Z and you only answered X

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

now if we are all sitting in a meeting and we hear his phone get a text or an e-mail it is guaranteed that someone will “yell” squirrel. He is conscious of it now, but can’t help himself. Squirrel, squirrel squirrel!! he still needs to read the e-mail that just came in.

The Dolphins would need to send the Broncos at least its second round pick (No. 42) to make a deal with Denver to move up from 11 to 5. Trust me, this is being discussed.
    ____________________________________________

would you give them #11, juwaun james and a 4th for the move up?

    Lions would be cool.

  96. D's avatar D says:

If we trade up its going to be for a QB, but if we did trade James, i expect we would also go OL in the second, if Trading James prevented the loss of that pick. I think anything we do though is going to include a next years 1st. I dont see getting out of that range.

    • D's avatar D says:

Leverage, especially if we wait until drat day to make the deal would probably cost us swap of 1st, a next years 1st and James, but probably would keep us from having to give up anything additional. In the second we could probably get Isaiah Wynn who could play RT, or he could play OG and backup at OC, and kick Davis out to RT. There are some other pretty solid RT prospects to be had in the 2nd too and 3rd too.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not so sure about that. The QBs aren’t even the best prospects in this draft.

      • D's avatar D says:

Tim i like nElson a lot, and i agree with you, he is probably my top big board guy, with Barkley being a very close second, BUT if they trade i do not see if being for either Barkley or Nelson. Its going to be for a QB.

  97. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Definitely don’t trade up for anything but a QB. Nelson should end up being a good player, but a guard….yes, I said it….just isn’t worth giving up multiple high picks to get….no matter how good he is.
