The 2018 NFL Draft is just 2 days away! What better time to take a look at a position the Miami Dolphins have largely ignored or failed to adequately fill in over a decade! Nope, not QB, although I’m sure some of you feel that way, no it’s TE! If you just look at the names we’ve had in at TE it doesn’t seem nearly as bad, but trust me, we didn’t have that player when they were producing or healthy. Julius Thomas, Jordan Cameron, Dion Sims, Charles Clay, Anthony Fasano, David Martin and finally Randy McMichael. McMichael was our best TE out of this group, and David Martin was a nice #2 TE, but the rest, fughettaboutit! It’s time to change that, and this particular draft has pretty decent depth, and I’d feel pretty comfortable with at least 3 prospects, so we do have a chance of finally drafting a TE early that will help this offense and make a major impact as a receiver.
Mike Gesicki 6’5 247 Penn State

Mike Gesicki would be my first choice at TE. He’s not the best blocker at this point, in fact, he may be the player least likely to block, but I do think he may be the most dangerous receiver at TE. You can teach a player to block, but you can’t teach speed and athleticism, and Mike Gesicki has that in spades. At 6’5 247, with long 34″ arms, Gesicki ran the 40 in 4.54 seconds, put up 22 reps of 225, had an amazing 41.5″ vertical, a very fast 4.1 20 YD shuttle, and a 129″ broad jump. This kid screams explosiveness. Gesicki made his presence felt as a Junior at Penn State, and had his breakout season. He finished with 48 receptions for 679 yards and 5 TD’s, a very nice 14.5YPR. In his Senior season, Gesicki caught 57 passes for 563 yards and 9 TD’s. Mike Gesicki is the highest rated TE at NFL.com by a slight margin at 5.92. Besides the long arms, at the end of those long arms are some big mitts, 10 1/8″ mitts. I think Gesicki could be the missing piece that gets our offense going. Having that fast TE threatening the seam will open things for our running backs, and also our other receivers. We haven’t had a TE commanding any attention in far too long.
*********************************************************************
Hayden Hurst 6’4 250 South Carolina

Hurst is also a very athletic TE prospect, He was actually in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization as a pitcher, but left baseball and walked on at S. Carolina as a TE. Hurst finally got his big chance his Sophomore year, and he took advantage of that chance and finished the season with 48 catches for 616 yards and a TD. His Junior year was pretty consistent with his last season, 44 catches for 559 yards and 2 TD’s. The one negative about Hurst is he will be a relatively old rookie at 25 years old. Hurst did well at the combine as well, though not as good as Gesicki, running a 4.67 40, and a 31.5″ vertical. Hurst is a better blocker than Gesicki, and at least has blocked, unlike Gesicki who is mainly used as a receiver. Hurst has very good hands, registering only 1 drop against 100 receptions. Hurst is rated at 5.90, 2nd highest rated TE.
***********************************************************************
Dallas Goedert 6’5 255 South Dakota State

Dallas Goedert has a lot of receptions on his resume, and many of them one handed acrobatic grabs as he is pictured making above. He’s got talent, and although he’s Rock’s favorite, he worries me a bit. First off, he played at South Dakota St. where he was a man among boys. The guy covering him in that pic above looks smaller than me! This is what worries me, he hasn’t played against tough coverage, and bigger defenders, and he surely will in the NFL. An average LB in the NFL will likely be heads and shoulders better than anything he’s faced in college, so I think he has some challenges ahead of him. Goedert didn’t run the 40 at the combine or his pro day due to a hamstring injury, but he did some drills at his pro day. Dallas had a nice 35″ vertical and a 10.1′ broad jump. He also ran a nice 4.06 in the 20 YD shuttle, as well as a quick 6.87 in the 3 cone drill. Goedert’s best season was his Junior year where he caught 92 passes for 1293 yards and 11 TD’s. He’s rated as the 3rd best TE by NFL.com at 5.87
***************************************************************
Ian Thomas 6’4 259 Indiana

Thomas is one of the more well rounded TE’s in the draft. He’s a good receiver as well as a good blocker as an in line TE. He doesn’t have great speed, but he’s fast enough. He actually has a remarkable story as far his upbringing, after losing both his parents at 9 years, and being raised by siblings. He’s known as “Humble and focused” at Indiana, and scouts say he loves football. Thomas had his best season as a Senior after he transferred from community college a year earlier. He caught 25 passes for 376 yards and 5 TD’s. Although he didn’t perform the bench press at the combine or his pro day, Thomas is considered a powerful athlete. He has good run after the catch ability and is very physical separating from would be tacklers. Thomas does need coaching on route running and may have some more upside in that regard. Thomas is somewhat of an unfinished product having played only 2 seasons, really 1 full season of college ball. Thomas is rated at 5.82 at NFL.com
*****************************************************************
Dalton Schultz 6’6 242 Stanford

Schultz is actually at the other end of the spectrum from what I want for the Dolphins, because his actually a better blocking TE than receiver. He may be one of the best blockers at TE in this draft. His receiving stats are relatively dismal, his Senior year totals were 22 catches for 212 yards and 3 TD’s. He wouldn’t be the guy I’d want as our 1st TE, but I wouldn’t mind him as our 2nd TE, with Gesicki spread out or in the slot. He was a big part of the run game at Stanford and relied heavily as a run blocker. He has the size, and I’m sure he’ll add even more weight once he hits a regular NFL lifting routine. He’s expected to go around the 3rd or 4th RD, and honestly I wouldn’t mind doubling up on TE’s, although MarQueis Gray isn’t bad as a 2nd TE as a blocker either. Schultz is rated at 5.70 at NFL.com
************************************************************
I know some of you have your favorites later in the draft, but I think it’s crucial to our team’s success that we get one of the top TE prospects in this draft, meaning IMO either Gesicki, Hurst or Goedert. I feel if they pass on these guys, we’ll end with yet another JAG at the TE position, continuing the tradition here in MIA of ignoring the TE position.
PS – If you intend on attending this year’s Fest game, please vote on the poll on the right side underneath the 2018 schedule. This way we can choose a date early and get those reservations taken care of! Thanks, and happy voting!

Here’s a mock y’all will like:
https://www.draftsite.com/nfl/miami/30/
Great job Mike!
Who has two thumbs and likes this mock draft?
👍👍
This guy
Some monkey?
That’s pretty much my top 4
I don’t have an opinion on Schultz
Don’t forget about Fumagalli!
GOEDERT!!
i’m sure one of the guys above will be a dolphin
opposable thumbs Phellon! and I answered my own question with “This guy” pointing both thumbs back at myself! LOL
Monkeys have opposable thumbs, too!
I am going to be sooo pissed off when Belicheat takes Goedert with his second first round pick.
Back to the discussion of Defensive Tackles from last night. I don’t think the team is going to miss Suh all that much this year. We got nearly the same production out of Godshow as we did Suh with much fewer snaps. (tackles, TFL, Pass Defensed & FF) Godshow didn’t register a sack last year. but Suh’s 4.5 sacks at 1/2 sack increments didn’t exactly change the completion of the season either.
Man pick it up guys! It’s been an hour and 45 mins and there are only 10 posts. 6 of which are from me.
Let me try this;
Suh sucked and did nothing for us in terms of win loss
Tannehill is the greatest QB the dolphins have had since Marino and will wind up breaking Dan’s records with the team……..
(That should get some going) LOL
I agree with all of this.
Yeah, where’s the controversy
My bosses are out of town today. is it noticeable?
Rock – I’m going to be pissed when any team takes Gesicki in RD 1, most likely the Saints
Tannehill is limited, I don’t think he’s better than Pennington was, Hopefully Gase will coach him up and he’ll be the new an improved version. he definitely has the physical tools and the footwork, most of his issues lie in the 6 inch field between his ears.
He only has 6″ between his ears?
I would be extremely happy with this draft
ROUND OVERALL PLAYER NOTES
1 11 Tremaine Edmunds, LB, Virginia Tech
2 42 Taven Bryan, DT, Florida
2 60 Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn State from PIT
3 73 Traded to Pittsburgh
4 123 Traded to Pittsburgh from CLE/CAR
4 131 Luke Falk, QB, Washington State from PHI/NE
6 209 Darrel Williams, RB, LSU from LAR/KC
7 227 Javon Wims, WR, Georgia from SF
7 229 Sean Welsh, G/C, Iowa
The Dolphins would surely love to land a Baker Mayfield or Josh Rosen, but in this mock the top QBs go 1-2-3-4. So they pivot to taking the ultra-athletic Edmunds, who has the upside to be one of the best linebackers in the game. He’ll slot in next to Raekwon McMillian as the team’s top linebackers, and the Dolphins could look to trade Kiko Alonso for help at other positions or a late pick.
In the second round, the Dolphins snatch up a potential first-round talent in Bryan, who should take over for Ndamukong Suh as a starter from Day 1. Rather than wait and hope Gesicki gets to them in the third round, Miami trades No. 73 and No. 123 to move into the end of the second round and get him. Gesicki, like Edmunds, is insane athletically, and he should be an immediate force in the passing game.
Falk isn’t likely to prove a worthy starter at quarterback, but he should be a better No. 2 option long-term than Brock Osweiler. Williams and Wims provide depth at skill positions on offense, while Welsh could back up all three spots on the interior of the offensive line.
I’ll take it, although I really want a FS (news) at 11.
yeah, it’s ok. It is missing something though…..Oh I know GOEDERT!!
Every mock I see that doesn’t have us taking a TE makes me so angry. There are quite a few.
If it doesnt have us going TE in the 2nd I’m pissed. That putz doesnt know what hes talking about.
When I was doing the RB article a week or so ago, when I was looking at Kalen Ballage, I thought to myself he reminds me of David Johnson. Then I was listening yesterday to NFL radio, and Jim Miller said the same thing, he said he worked with hi at the Senior Bowl and thought “This guy is David Johnson”
Son of a Son’s mock:
love it… although I’d take RB in 3rd instead of DT… and if Jerome Baker is available in the 4th we will have a hell of a draft! 🙂
If he were a couple of inches taller and 20lbs heavier he would be a 2nd round guy.
On the QB stuff:
Anybody else here watch on the stuff about these QBs and when I hear Darnold talk… I don’t see Carson Palmer, I see Leinart/Sanchez. There’s something about USC QBs in the NFL… with Palmer clearly the only real long time leader… then all the way back to Haden when he got his chance. Lot’s of L.A. glitz and glam in between, imo.
Mike, I know you have a huge head and all, but how many inches do you think you have between your ears?
That’s ghey, asking how many inches he has.
Six players that I would STICK at #11 for (in no particular order and assuming Barkley, Chubb are no-brainer gone long before #11):
Nelson
Fitzpatrick
Edwards
Smith
James
Rosen
If they are all gone trade back if possible cuz the extra pick makes it easier to take a QB in 2nd or 3rd. I’d be more than happy in trade back if we still got Rashaan Evans as our first pick. Then TE and QB… RB in 4th … then our second 4th onwards BPA with emphasis on special teams potential.
Who is Edwards?
lmao… Edwards is a brain fart… Edmunds*
I thought you got spell checked, you could’ve played it off.
That’s pretty much the top 11, including the 3 QBs. I’d also take Ward.
IF, and big IF… we would need a trade-back ready to go because we’d need a surprise in top ten to secure one of those… i.e. someone has ridiculous crush on Ridley or Vea. If one of those two somehow sneaks in, we are good to go at #11.
Why do we need a surprise in the top 10?
I thought we got rid of all the brain farts?
Until I finish this grande Americano, I will be gassy as hell. 🙂
Rhino, it cracks me up every time I see your name, because my son is Ryan O. Nicknamed Rhino. In kindergarten he was a rhino for Halloween, so he won the latchkey costume contest, since the kids thought it was funny.
It’s a good nickname!! I only get to use it online.
Still don’t know when game 1 of 2nd round of the NHL playoffs is. I have VGK tickets. I hope it’s not Thursday.
They should have been the Vegas Golden Showers
Then you’d watch?
What no Fumagali?
Maybe as a 2nd TE. I want our TE to be at least 6’4″
My Favorite Mock so far:
YOUR TEAM

2: R2P10 TE DALLAS GOEDERT SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
3: R3P9 RB RASHAAD PENNY SAN DIEGO STATE

5: R4P31 QB LUKE FALK WASHINGTON STATE
6: R6P35 DL BREELAND SPEAKS OLE MISS
7: R7P9 K EDDY PINEIRO FLORIDA
8: R7P11 FB DIMITRI FLOWERS OKLAHOMA
Nice
Jeez Mike E — after reading Pig’s take on him was all Gesicki as our Gronk option, but you put in too much detail….cause now know Hurst was in the Pirates org. And something to be said for a two-way TE. And have no problem with him being 25. That just means his whole contract will be in his NFL prime years. And far as I am concerned 2nd contracts are like getting a free agent.
So don’t know which one, but do want one. But do know my favorite pick at #11 now is Trad E Down out of Morepicks U.
Jordan Akins TE from UCF was in the Rangers farm system. He’d be a good late round pick up.
Trouble with the curve…
He’s not the only one Son. Remember the first time my little team faced a pitcher who had a curve. Whole lot of kids hitting the dirt and the umpire then going STEE..RIKE. And my baseball career was over.
I want the two small school guys from SDS! South Dakota State and San Diego State. offensive PLAYMAKERS.
Stanger – When I went to Mets Fantasy Camp about 14 years ago, they drafted us into what I think was 6 teams, and then we played each other until teams lost 2, and then the 2 remaining teams played each other, the winner of that game playing against the resident Mets pros. I faced Randy Niemann, his fastball was probably somewhere in the 80’s, and then he threw me a hook, I missed by a mile, and I glared out at him and told him that wasn’t fair. He threw me another fastball, which I then weakly popped it up for a cheap base hit between 2nd and RF. The funny thing is, we were all walking around like mummies, all taped up because it was January and none of us had played any ball, and then we do a day of drills, and then play about 4 games in 5 days. It was an awful lot to do in such a short period of time. There were 2 achilles tears, a couple of knee injuries, but otherwise just a shit-ton of muscle aches and strains and pulls. I’d love to do it again, but it’s crazy expensive.
That must have been so Fing cool. I couldn’t imagine hitting an 80. 60 at a batting cage is tough enough. Did you razz him from first after the hit?
What was the score against the pros? I assume given whoever you guys had on the mound that they could have run it up as much as they wanted.
They won, but remember, all of them were retired pros. I have the game on a CD, I made a very nice play at third base, had to come in fast and charge the ball, and then make a nice throw across my body across the diamond. That was my moment, I hit like crap. I didn’t razz Niemann, it was a cheap hit, and I knew it.
We had a really good pitcher, lefty, pitched in college. He had a great curve of his own
Sounds like a great play….and you got it on Warner Wolf’s got to the video tape. So will last forever. And you know me — heck yeah would have been razzing Niemann unless was worried about the “plunk” next time around. 🙂

Ha! NFL.com has him at 6’1.
I feel like I’ve read a few conflicting things about his size
I checked the Senior Bowl roster, he was just a shade under 6’5. Maybe he was wearing high heels?

Looking forward to some serious kicking battles in training camp
Way to mock his ridiculous post.
Eddy Pineiro sounds like a jockey to me

* places Landry Jersey on top
* closes box and puts it back in closet

That sounds like something Piggy would say . . .
You mean oink
Yes, like oink
^^^ Some funny stuff on Piggy’s twitter feed.
Piggy, I think there may be a couple of guys that will give you the cash to buy yourself a Tannehill jersey.
I have a tannehill Jersey
It’s my only jersey of an active Dolphin player left
I’m pretty sure he will be traded by the weekend
A guy was threatening to kill himself by jumping off an overpass and here is what the truckers did.

What if he lands in between? That was a waste of a lot of maneuvering. lol
assholes blocking all the lanes of traffic! I have places to be!
Hopefully he’s not an Olympic long jumper
I still have a Wake jersey, and my wife has a Tannehill jersey, but that’s it.
That bridge is not very high
Maybe he was going to jump into oncoming traffic.

I thought it touching, but then love together when folks come together after big snow storms, nor’esterners, hurricanes, etc.
When we got “snowmageddon” in DC (3.5 feet and then another 2 feet like 36 hours later)…a car needed to get pushed out and it got pushed out. One guy started and whoever else was around just joined in.
If we don’t draft one, am thinking Lippett could play free safety for us on passing downs. Lots of athletic in him.
Tackling issues, but I do like that idea. Tim or Mike posted that a while back.
Yeah I did but as a deep safety only in certain sub packages, not full-time.
He looks ripped, wonder what hes been doing since the injury😉

Dolphins say they have exercised fifth-year option for DeVante Parker.
They said they were going to last week, i guess it’s final now.
Two more years DeVante and Stills too. MIght take a wideout, but seems won’t be in the first even if we trade down.
Not necessarily with Parker, they can rescind it next year as long as he passes a physical next March. This is a prove it year for Parker.
We’ve been hearing for years how they’re going to move guys around, but I haven’t seen much of it other than Suh, lining up outside and a few other minor ones. I really hope they move TJ to LB in sub packages.
Draft Minkah, and let him play nickel and Lippett play FS on 3rd and long. Create some TOs.
I feel like there is always some exotic plan to do something new that never happens
Remember when Philbin was in his first year and they talked about a fast paced offense? The media was reporiting two offenses in the field at the same time at once to keep the pace up.
I pretty much stopped trusting the offense
Play with a lead and you can experiment a little more.
Piggy – I agree man. You may as well put the “Wide 9” with the “Fast Paced Offense” Neither of them were effective, or even employed
yeah, we failed forward fast with both those.

The winky eye (indicating humor or sarcasm) as a opposed to the stinky eye (indicating animosity)
as opposed to the brown eye, which sometimes can stink and / or be pink.
which is not pink eye, which nobody wants
LOL
We should do a mock draft here, at least for RD 1, or maybe RD 1-3.
ooh, ooh, oooh!!! Dallas Goedert!
What? that’s not how it works? I called him first.
Piggy,

I wonder if Drew held Gronk’s hand, walked up to Belicheat, and said
“Ok, Rob, now tell Mr. Belicheat what you and me talked about during recess. It’s ok. Use your words.”
LMAO! I could easily picture that.
And motocross fans all across the world are saddened….lol.
Does anyone know what time the draft starts?
8PM EST
So we should pick by about 3am
Only 10 minutes now so it shouldn’t be that late unless we trade way down.

That is frickin hilarious.

Heck, I’m ready to do it tonight if we can get enough people.
Deadliest Catch is on tonight
I’ll play too
M – I’m at work till 9PM tonight. It’s really quiet though, I don’t have a doctor here this evening. I could probably do it , but I have to leave at 9PM
Mike E and Son,
How many people should we get to participate in this Draft?
I would think we should have at least 6, but we can do it with less if we have to
I’ll play!
Okay, so that’s 4.
glad to see us taking the 5th on Devante.
Same here… I think that will really motivate him.
Hey, wanna do a mock draft with us?
He needs to catch a break with the foot and ankle injuries. Gase praised his work ethic in 2017 after criticizing how he was not taking care of his body in 2016.

Actually, Stanger was here a bit ago too. How about it Stanger?

we should be on the clock a little before 10PM, right?

I suppose as soon as Mike E is ready after returning from work.
Yeah, around there
So far we have M, Son, Tim, Naples and myself. Anyone else want in?
Should we do this mock draft like we have in the past — where an individual selects for a given team — or should we go by consensus for every pick?
Good question, my first thought was do it live, and do it like we have, but I like consensus though, it will be true as it can be
So how we going to do this?
If I’m gonna be the Browns or Bears I gotta start drinkin’.
If we go by consensus, it would go like this (see my next post)…
