2018 NFL Draft – Tight End

The 2018 NFL Draft is just 2 days away!  What better time to take a look at a position the Miami Dolphins have largely ignored or failed to adequately fill in over a decade!  Nope, not QB, although I’m sure some of you feel that way, no it’s TE!  If you just look at the names we’ve had in at TE it doesn’t seem nearly as bad, but trust me, we didn’t have that player when they were producing or healthy.  Julius Thomas, Jordan Cameron, Dion Sims, Charles Clay,  Anthony Fasano, David Martin and finally Randy McMichael.  McMichael was our best TE out of this group, and David Martin was a nice #2 TE, but the rest, fughettaboutit!  It’s time to change that, and this particular draft has pretty decent depth, and I’d feel pretty comfortable with at least 3 prospects, so we do have a chance of finally drafting a TE early that will help this offense and make a major impact as a receiver.

Mike Gesicki  6’5 247 Penn State

web-Kent-State-v-Penn-State-5

Mike Gesicki would be my first choice at TE.  He’s not the best blocker at this point, in fact, he may be the player least likely to block, but I do think he may be the most dangerous receiver at TE.  You can teach a player to block, but you can’t teach speed and athleticism, and Mike Gesicki has that in spades.  At 6’5 247, with long 34″ arms, Gesicki ran the 40 in 4.54 seconds, put up 22 reps of 225, had an amazing 41.5″ vertical, a very fast 4.1 20 YD shuttle, and a 129″ broad jump.  This kid screams explosiveness. Gesicki made his presence felt as a Junior at Penn State, and had his breakout season.  He finished with 48 receptions for 679 yards and 5 TD’s, a very nice 14.5YPR.  In his Senior season, Gesicki caught 57 passes for 563 yards and 9 TD’s.   Mike Gesicki is the highest rated TE at NFL.com by a slight margin at 5.92.  Besides the long arms, at the end of those long arms are some big mitts, 10 1/8″ mitts.  I think Gesicki could be the missing piece that gets our offense going.  Having that fast TE threatening the seam will open things for our running backs, and also our other receivers.  We haven’t had a TE commanding any attention in far too long.

*********************************************************************

Hayden Hurst 6’4 250  South Carolina

Hayden-Hurst-1_ikqap0

Hurst is also a very athletic TE prospect,  He was actually in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization as a pitcher, but left baseball and walked on at S. Carolina as a TE.  Hurst finally got his big chance his Sophomore year, and he took advantage of that chance and finished the season with 48 catches for 616 yards and a TD.  His Junior year was pretty consistent with his last season, 44 catches for 559 yards and 2 TD’s.  The one negative about Hurst is he will be a relatively old rookie at 25 years old.  Hurst did well at the combine as well, though not as good as Gesicki, running a 4.67 40, and a 31.5″ vertical.  Hurst is a better blocker than Gesicki, and at least has blocked, unlike Gesicki who is mainly used as a receiver.  Hurst has very good hands, registering only 1 drop against 100 receptions.  Hurst is rated at 5.90, 2nd highest rated TE.

***********************************************************************

Dallas Goedert 6’5 255  South Dakota State

20481605-23940311

Dallas Goedert has a lot of receptions on his resume, and many of them one handed acrobatic grabs as he is pictured making above.  He’s got talent, and although he’s Rock’s favorite, he worries me a bit.  First off, he played at South Dakota St. where he was a man among boys.  The guy covering him in that pic above looks smaller than me!  This is what worries me, he hasn’t played against tough coverage, and bigger defenders, and he surely will in the NFL.  An average LB in the NFL will likely be heads and shoulders better than anything he’s faced in college, so I think he has some challenges ahead of him. Goedert didn’t run the 40 at the combine or his pro day due to a hamstring injury, but he did some drills at his pro day.  Dallas had a nice 35″ vertical and a 10.1′ broad jump.  He also ran a nice 4.06 in the 20 YD shuttle, as well as a quick 6.87 in the 3 cone drill.  Goedert’s best season was his Junior year where he caught 92 passes for 1293 yards and 11 TD’s.   He’s rated as the 3rd best TE by NFL.com at 5.87

***************************************************************

Ian Thomas  6’4 259  Indiana

Ian-Thomas

Thomas is one of the more well rounded TE’s in the draft.  He’s a good receiver as well as a good blocker as an in line TE.  He doesn’t have great speed, but he’s fast enough.  He actually has a remarkable story as far his upbringing, after losing both his parents at 9 years, and being raised by siblings.  He’s known as “Humble and focused” at Indiana,  and scouts say he loves football.  Thomas had his best season as a Senior after he transferred from community college a year earlier.  He caught 25 passes for 376 yards and 5 TD’s.  Although he didn’t perform the bench press at the combine or his pro day, Thomas is considered a powerful athlete. He has good run after the catch ability and is very physical separating from would  be tacklers.  Thomas does need coaching on route running and may have some more upside in that regard.  Thomas is somewhat of an unfinished product having played only 2 seasons, really 1 full season of college ball.  Thomas is rated at 5.82 at NFL.com

*****************************************************************

Dalton Schultz  6’6 242  Stanford

845121998-e1514925620521

Schultz is actually at the other end of the spectrum from what I want for the Dolphins, because his actually a better blocking TE than receiver.  He may be one of the best blockers at TE in this draft.  His receiving stats are relatively dismal, his Senior year totals were 22 catches for 212 yards and 3 TD’s.  He wouldn’t be the guy I’d want as our 1st TE, but I wouldn’t mind him as our 2nd TE, with Gesicki spread out or in the slot.  He was a big part of the run game at Stanford and relied heavily as a run blocker.  He has the size, and I’m sure he’ll add even more weight once he hits a regular NFL lifting routine.  He’s expected to go around the 3rd or 4th RD, and honestly I wouldn’t mind doubling up on TE’s, although MarQueis Gray isn’t bad as a 2nd TE as a blocker either.  Schultz is rated at 5.70 at NFL.com

************************************************************

I know some of you have your favorites later in the draft, but I think it’s crucial to our team’s success that we get one of the top TE prospects in this draft, meaning IMO either Gesicki, Hurst or Goedert.  I feel if they pass on these guys, we’ll end with yet another JAG at the TE position, continuing the tradition here in MIA of ignoring the TE position.

PS – If you intend on attending this year’s Fest game, please vote on the poll on the right side underneath the 2018 schedule.  This way we can choose a date early and get those reservations taken care of!  Thanks, and happy voting!

Armando has very good sources within the Dolphins org and I like his reporting when it’s about what he hears is going on. But like many sports pundits, opinions are just that like the rest of us.

  2. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There is some new buzz out there that this draft only has about 15 what they call blue chip prospects or translated to 1st round grades even though you have to pick someone. So as some here have said, just take the BPA at # 11and move on. Or if you get an offer to trade down and acquire a couple of extra picks, that could be an option too. The compensation would have to be worth it, not just to do it.

Rosen sure is the red-headed step child going into the draft. But who the heck is this guy talking to who will say what the Phins will or will not do if Rosen is there? Seems smart guy in the know would say, “just hoping Rosen falls to us…..might even trade up for him.”

Josh Rosen — by nearly EVERY account — is the most pro-ready QB in this draft class.

Son, I have no idea who our 1st rd pick will be. I was just talking to a friend who is a Giants fan and he wants Barkley. I said until we see what the Browns and Giants do 1-2, we’ll all have a better idea how the rest of it plays out. Jets at #3 take a QB no doubt. Then what happens at 4, 5 and 6? Those are the trade up spots unless said teams want to stay put. To me 7-11 then goes one after the other.

Not sure if we have something up our sleeve or we’ll just stay put. My guess is we will likely select in no particular order – Smith, Edmunds, Fitzpatrick, James or Ward. I wish the TEs were rated higher but it seems they have 2-4 rd grades.

When defenses play in sub packages 65-70% of the time why am I looking at LB with Alonso, McMillan, Anthony, Allen and Hull? If McDonald doubles down as a S/LB and we have Jones who is the same, I’d rather have a DB who can add more coverage. We’re not playing 3 LBs most downs. I get the LB desire, but I think Fitzpatrick makes the most sense. I’d trade up a few spots to get him too because I think he makes us a better team.

  52. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The way I’m thinking is that Mayfield is the kind of spark, the leader type that energize this offense. Tannehill is a good guy, but he’s not a charismatic leader. Not every QB is. I think it could present an excellent scenario for us as well. Tannehill manages to hold off Mayfield this season, and plays well. We then have a tradeable commodity for next season, hopefully a high pick worthy commodity. That’s a prefect scenario. We trade Tannehill who played well and proved healthy at 31, and we have our QB for the next decade, a real leader. UNfortunately, I don’t think we get Mayfield, but getting Edmunds to me is an excellent consolation prize. I really like him, and would be thrilled to have him here.

Do we have a change in draft strat from a last minute gas mask again?

Anyway, Polian questioned why so many had QB as Miami’s top need. Said “What’s wrong with T-hill?” “I see nothing wrong with him outside of his injury.” Said if he never got injured, he would be considered at the bottom of the top 10 in the league but because of his injury, they say that Miami needs one. Sure, you draft one but for Miami you can wait. If you are not rebuilding then you build around who you have like Jax has done with Bortles. Says he feels Miami’s top need is TE, DT or LB. Says Miami needs to solidify the TE position. Says when Indy doubled down on TE when they took Fleener, Luck flourished and that is why the Pats would always go out and sign a F/A TE to pair with Gronk. Also said Miami needs to solidify their DT rotation. What I took from this is he feels it would be a mistake for Miami to draft a QB in the 1st.

I was like WTF, he has been reading my mind and wondered if any of the Tanyhaters heard this. LOL

I think Mayfield is the best pick the browns can make
    He’s the safest

I never really cared for the top of this an class

When it comes down to it, down the line I can see a player like Falk or Rudolph being the best qb in this class. I think Mayfield has a chance as well so I like the lick for the browns if they are going to take a qb

Darnold is just not my cup of tea. I don’t think he has any business being the #1 overall pick
I have real issues with Allen and Jackson and their accuracy

I think Rosen can be good . He’s got a few warts but he’s another guy I think a team can build around – if his head is on straight. But is it?

  81. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Alright I will give you the non pork want/need

    Want Nelson
    Pick Edmunds maybe Ridley

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I would be happy with any of those

I don’t think the Ridley thing is as crazy as most

I would actually be pretty happy with any of these guys: Mayfield, Rosen, Smith, Edmunds, Nelson, Ridley or Guice

A little less enthusiastic about a safety but still happy about fitzpatrick or James

      Im pretty open this draft

  82. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not true at all. Of course you have to play well too, but guys play better when they believe in the QB

    Reply
Completely true there have been many good QB’s who have no personalities at all, or that are not liked.

Eli Manning comes to mind. NO charisma.

BailBondMIke, What does Polian know? There are people on here. They have eyes…..and they disagree…..

Mike, put me down for Minka/Minkah

  87. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Rock, I know. Everyone has been disagreeing all frickin’ off season. LOL I just happen to agree with him and there might be one or two more who do (Tim, help me out Bro) but the majority on here probably don’t agree with what he said. I think we all agree with him on the TE situation though.

  88. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Mike E, thought Nelson was considered out of the equation. Put me down also for wanting Nelson and picking Smith.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s kinda fuzzy Mike – I think it was intended to be a realistic want, but there are no guidelines, so I changed it to Nelson. Like I think there’s a shot we can get Mayfield, it’s just not likely

  89. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Reason I don’t like Rosen is I watched him in the game last year when they lost to Memphis when they were ranked at the beginning of the season. He got out played and out gunned by Riley Ferguson. He made some real bonehead plays and really bad throws under pressure leading to two bad INT’s costing them the game. It was Cutler like. Good call Armondo.

  90. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Rosen does make one nice TD throw to a TE on a seam route but he blew the game in the second half with 2 bad picks.

    ——————
Disagree. He has the lowest ceiling of the top 5 QBs. Safest is probably Rosen as he is most pro ready and able to start day 1

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yet Rosen is least right now the 4th man out. But QBs are a weird thing…..two of the top four — if not bust — will have a pretty average to blow NFL starter QB career. And these guys have been inspected by “the experts” since they were in high school.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Speaking of lazy, that 2 out of 4 won’t make it is as lazy as it gets. Use past draft stats…cime on man😉

  93. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rock – Good teams have good leaders, and Mayfield was a great leader in college. That’s undisputed. He wouldn’t be a great leader unless he played well enough, but that combo is huge.

  94. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Staying realistic I’ll go with Fitzpatrick/James.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Tim wants a safety

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Fitzpatrick would add a nice dimension to our defense because he can play some corner, nickel and safety. I don’t think Smith will be there for us but possibly Edmunds. I also think we can get a LB in other rounds. For some reason I keep thinking it will be James though.

  95. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m guessing after the night is over we’ll have a real nice LB to talk about and how he fits in…..but gonna be a whole lot more discussion if we go QB or trade up (QB or not). Trade down and we will all be happy, cause that just makes sense. 🙂
