Welcome to Miami Minkah Fitzpatrick!

roger-goodellminkah-fitzpatrick-499bd61c84f31f61

The Dolphins managed to get perhaps the top DB in the 2018 NFL Draft and stayed put at #11 to do it as well.  As usual, admittedly, Minkah wasn’t my pick, but also as usual, I can see why we got him.  I think it’s clear the FO, Gase, and defensive coaches alike, all felt like we don’t really have that deep safety.  Minkah is not only going to be a deep safety, he can cover in the slot, on the outside like a CB, and may possibly be the guy to cover TE’s.  We’ll see, not going to get too far ahead of myself here.

There are many positives to glean from this selection, he thoroughly solidifies our secondary, and our CB’s will look even better knowing they have a guy they can rely on to pick up deep receivers in our zone defense.  There’s also a negative.  We just signed safety T.J. McDonald to a 4YR/$24M contract through 2021. Why?  We have all-pro safety Reshad Jones, and if they wanted to draft a safety with our first pick, which is fine, why sign McDonald to a 4 YR contract.  The only thing that makes sense is that T.J. McDonald will be our hybrid S/LB and most likely nickel LB.  Can he handle that role?  We’ll find out this season, for better or for worse.  I’m not trying to knock the Fitzpatrick pick in the least, but I would love to see what the plan is, and ya know, hope there actually IS a plan.

In the meantime – Welcome to Miami Minkah Fitzpatrick, may you be blessed with a long and healthy career All-Pro career here in Miami!  Go #29!

I wanted a defensive playmaker in the first or a trade back for a tight end and it seems we got the first one. Get that TE in the second and I’ll be happy.
Who are some good suggestions at LB for 3rd round and beyond?

  6. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

6 0f the first 23 picks last night were offensive linemen. And 5 first round picks were QB’s. Miami, on the other hand, appears to be sticking with an unproven O-Line and a QB who, because of the beating he has taken, has become somewhat injury prone and fragile.

DOES ANYBODY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THIS?? –NOT in the Dolphins front orifice. I noted that Tampa Bay traded their 7th pick for a 12th pick plus numbers 53 and 56. SMART MOVE!!

GAPING HOLES still exist at TE, OL, DL, etc., etc. WE have yet to address any of them. Minkah should NOT be a stinkah. But his selection, alone, will not cure what ails the Dolphins. We have a TON of work to do, and we expect (hope) that a proven loser like T-Bomb can get the job done??? It will take a miracle.

Unfortunately, Miami’s BIGGEST NEED can not be addressed this week. That would be our great need FOR A NEW OWNER, an owner who won’t hire the proven losers that have run this franchise for the last decade.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OD – We did address the O-line. We brought in a starting C in Kilgore, and brought in a top OG in Sitton, and signed James for his 5th YR contract We may draft an OL, but it’s not the top priority.

  7. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

It looks like we may get a TE at 42 as there are no LBers ranked that high

SMH OD PLEASE, Tannehill has not become injury prone & fragile. Hyperbole!

Every year is different, a new chemistry of men and their talents. What we had wasn’t a good chemistry. Keep core values/talent while shedding bloated salaries/ego.

I like the pick as we have to beat wr’s, te’s, and not be left in the dust. Reshaping ol and dl, adding talent/strength to db.

More to do and hope we can get a future pro bowl te.

  20. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Mike you don’t take Fitz without a plan, unless you’re Jeff Ireland. Gase has ulluded to not liking the play of our safeties together, as much as he thought he was going to.

Look at everything we’ve done so far and it has Gase’s finger prints all over it. From the MTP signing of Suh released, to Ajayi, to Pouncey, to Landry. Everything has been done with a theme in mind, to get his guys, that play his way, and if you don’t…don’t let the door…no matter who you are.

Buffalo and jets dumped a lot of talent last year, it worked for both of them, so it can be done.

I love the Fitz pick and the direction of the team. We bitch about status quo, then bitch when changes are made. As long as I see a direction towards a path that makes sense I’m good with it.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK Wyo, so what’s the plan for McDonald now? We have him for 4 years at $6M per. What’s he going to do?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

        Oops, Steve. 😀

      • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Trade him to Dallas for their #2 and get your TE

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They’ve already talked about moving him to LB, lots of teams are moving towards these types of LBs. We now have so much versatility in the back 7 that Kiko may be coming off the field in the dime.

Picking Fitz and moving TJ to LB fixes FS and LB. The D is mostly set, but I still see a need for a DT. We can get by without one, but that would only work, if no one got hurt and they played up to their potential. Hayes playing DT on passing downs completes our 4 man rotation, hoping fresh is better than or close to what we had last year.

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wyo – Trading him makes sense, if Dallas wants him.

  25. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Tunsil screwed up our draft in 2016 because we didn’t expect him to be there and he was. He was BPA and they took him. I think Minkah was a BPA who fell to them too. They probably had someone else targeted there but when he fell….

  26. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I don’t see an issue with having Jones, Fitz & McDonald all at the same time. We play 5 -6 backs the majority of the game anyway.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not only isn’t it an issue, it’s a strength. How many times have we seen Jones all over the field, like he’s the only one back there that can make a play? Now we have 2, that don’t have to concentrate on coverage as much and can make some plays.

The speed of the D has been increased Bigly. We’ve had guys nicked up in the past and seen guys like M. Thomas in coverage, yikes! Gase has gone about fixing the you can never have enough CBs, Fitz’ best skill is covering the slot, in a trendy way I hope it works.

  27. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Miami Dolphins: While safety Minkah Fitzpatrick will likely turn out to be a fine pick at No. 11 overall, Dolphins fans who saw Rosen sitting on the board until No. 10 have to be let down. Given that it feels like this team is stuck in quicksand, an indefinite future with Ryan Tannehill as the quarterback is hard to get excited about.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I wasn’t going to go there, but since you mentioned versatility and butthurt in high school😉 you may have some splanin to do.

  29. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I really, really like how Ozzie drafts. Guy is the best in the business. I thought all of the QB trades were solid and Arizona actually robbed the Raiders which surprised me a bit. Buying Bryant was also a terrible move so I question McKenzie a bit. Fitz was a great surprise just like Tunsil and Harris being available at their spots the two years before. Excellent value, great player.

I’m very interested in seeing how the coaches use guys this year. We’ve picked excellent picks the last 3 years, just removed a ton of talent, and have seen teams like the Bills and Jets thrive afterwards. I expect the same if these guys want to keep their jobs.

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – If TJ can play LB and it works, that’s great. All that remains to be seen

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yes, but the way it’s setup he doesn’t have to be great at it, he just has to not be a liability, because anytime you can get an extra DB on the field and not suffer in the run game you’ve succeeded. It also allows us to bring Fitz up to speed at a slower pace, because I see TJ playing FS too. We’re also going to be able to move guys around based on the matchup.

We’ve had our share of matchup issues in the past, this is what belicheat does better than anyone, and why they always seem to get back into a game.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t think T.J. is playing FS. He’s not that type of player. I’m sorry if I think it was a little impulsive to sign TJ a 4 year contract last year. You can tell me from today till tomorrow what he’s going to do, if he doesn’t do it well, it’s pointless.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I can’t help but question our FO. They pay exorbitant sums for FAs that don;t seem to ever work out. That seems like really poor research or maybe communication with the coaching staff. Maybe it’s trying too hard to give Gase a safety blanket? I’m not sure what, but they haven’t worked out well since Tannenbaum arrived. To be fair, Acorn Man didn’t have an amazing record either but it concerns me

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Everything doesn’t have to be black or white Mike, if it doesn’t work out to plan, you still have added depth and no worse than what we had last year, but if it does, its one of thise moves that could take the D to the next level.

  31. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We’ve been talking about the possibility of 3 safeties since Jan on this board. If you do don’t think that was a possibility, you haven’t been listening.

It doesn’t mean we won’t add a LB in the next few rounds

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – Well, everything kinda does have to work out. It’s not MLB and we’re not the Yankees. There’s a salary cap, so mistakes bite you in the ass.

  35. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Anyone surprised I’m trying to sell you on a WR?

  37. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Between a Guice or Hurst, who would you take? (Assume Gesicki if off the board)

  38. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Wyoming,

That’s a funny article. Fitz was the same value as Chubb at his spot as you mention. Honestly, the writer said his bias early. “It was a night for new eras and instant hope in the five cities that drafted quarterbacks in the first round.” He was all over the place in that as well. Buffalo was desperate to move up, Arizona did great though! Pure ignorance based off where someone placed a guy in their draft imagination spot. Richard Sherman and Russell Wilson say hi draft geniuses.

  39. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I think the chances of Goedert being available at #42 are pretty solid.

  40. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

My hit list on offense is a little longer than defense

Offense: gesicki, Goedert, Guice, Chubb, freeman, kirk, Ian thomas, Hernandez, Daniels

Defense is basically Hurst and Phillips, we can probably afford to wait for a LB

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I think they will also wait until round 4 for RB if they take one at all (CJ Anderson knows the coaching staff here loves him). Having a better ‘read’ on bringing Anderson in would really help us fill specific holes with the next four picks.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Accordingly by to Mando C.J. Anderson is very unlikely to happen unless the dolphins comenout of the draft wo a RB

  41. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggly – I like Harrison Phillips more than Mo Hurst

  42. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Sounds like Minkah is one heck of a player. Seems he was BPA as well. And guess Gase couldn’t stop himself from taking him. Man once said that “you can never have too many DBs”…..and in Minkah he got like three dbs with one pick.

  43. Ken's avatar Ken says:

What time does round 2 start tonight?

  44. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

If we don’t take a TE this round, I’d be scratching my head. There hasn’t been a more perfect time than this round in this draft to make that move.

  45. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Fitz 4.47 40 is pretty fast.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Exactly. That is why he can be a #1 CB because he is fast enough and has the coverage skills to match up against a WR but he is also physical enough to play Safety. I think he ultimately he is a FS but I can see using him in multiple roles depending upon the matchups

  46. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

We essentially drafted the best player Alabama has in this draft! That usually results in ProBowls

  47. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Alright time for my daily routine. Gym, radiation then nap. See you guys later

  48. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I don’t like the term “swiss army knife” DB. I hope that is not what Fitz is. To me that means he’s not good enough at anything to be any one thing. (I want a screw driver to drive screws all day and a fillet knife to fillet a fish, a Kbar in battle, a skinning knife to skin a dear, at cork screw to open a bottle of wine. While a SAK can do all those, it is not as good at any of them as the actual tool.

Oh yeah we need Shaquem tonight. Oh man what an addition he’d be.

  50. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

  56. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am rooting for Fitz and hope he become a probowl player for us, but 35 tackles a year, 3 ints per year and 8 passes defensed per year average doesn’t seem to hard to achieve.

    • D's avatar D says:

Most of the times the offenses schemed to take him out of plays. He was dominant in college. In fact I had him as the best safety in this draft and probably the best CB prospect as well. We got a good player

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

sweet, I did see a stat from PPF that QB’s had a 60 something passer rating throwing into his coverage area. (so besides PD’s he just made them miss too)

Baltimore gets the fifth year option on Jackson by getting him in the first round.

  69. D's avatar D says:

I think it’s becoming increasingly hard to pick what teams will select outside really obvious picks because bso many teams are adding the best talent no matter how deep they are at the position. Tampa did it, jags did it, Oakland went away from their primary need. So i think we look good as far as having a shot at a TE but I can’t say that teams above us wouldn’t take a TEnif it was BPA for them nor could I say we wouldn’t take Guice if he was there as he likely is BOA considering how much we are supposed to like him as a prospect. I know what I’d like to see as a selection but I think worst case scenario we still have a selection available that’s going to be really good for our offense, and there are prospects left that would be great for our defense too. I’m seeing a contributor in the second pick for sure and likely the third round guy too. Tons of talent still out there

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lol! So it’s harder to pick when they pick for need? If everyone just went BPA it would be like auto picking, and much easier.

  70. D's avatar D says:

Yeah and it’s a cheaper 5th year option since it’s outside the top 10

  71. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    ——————-
    11) Miami Dolphins: CB Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama – The temptation was there to transition from QB Ryan Tannehill. Instead, the Dolphins picked up one of the most exciting defenders in the draft. Fitzpatrick would have been a fine pick in the top 5. In a choice between Fitzpatrick and Derwin James, Miami couldn’t have gone wrong with either of them. Best all-around DB in the draft. Saban sic’d him on any top receiver the Tide was facing or had him cover over the top as a safety. Considering Alabama’s DBs typically do well in the league, this was a solid pick. Grade: A

I like Daniels. I think he’s more of a third round pick, but I think he could come in and play right away at RG for us. I don’t see it happening because I think TE and LB are just bigger needs.

  77. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

While I think we can add LB for depth, I’m not calling it a need with the Fitzpatrick

I really think the idea of Amith, Edmunds, James or Minkah we’re meant to address the same issue

We took a safety instead of a LB
I wouldn’t mind a Alan but I’m not calling it aneed

Maybe they got tired of watching us allowing all those 3rd and long conversions.

We will likely have to trade back up before 49 it looks like with the retirement of Witten!

I don’t know much about these guys, but it seems like the back end of our defense is pretty young and athletic. Seems like we will have options in matching up with the different offenses out there.

  81. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Don’t forget about Ian Thomas guys
    He’s a solid TE prospect

      #29 is available too.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“predominantly-slot player” and I read of him as a hybrid slot elsewhere. Doesn’t match up with a deep center FS. Know we have a player, just not sure how he will be used. And maybe that is the point…..other teams won’t either on a given play.

      • D's avatar D says:

He was a boundary cb in college when he played cb. These guys guess at where they are best suited in the NFL but he has the speed and agility for the outside. And he is a good tackling FE more of a hybrid like Jones. Jones can cover like a FD but plays well in the box, same with Fitzpatrick

      • D's avatar D says:

        Ability not agility

Anyone feel Mason Rudolph might be our first pick tonight?

  84. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – I guess it’s like with Jalen Ramsey. Most experts had him playing S or LB in the NFL, and yet he’s one of the best corners in the NFL. Have to see how he helps the team most.

  85. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If he’s still on the board when we’re up my gut is we take Dallas Goedert. He’s considered not just a receiving threat but also has the size and strength to be an in-line blocker.

  86. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    1: R1P11 S MINKAH FITZPATRICK, ALABAMA
2: R2P10 RB DERRIUS GUICE, LSU
    2: R2P29 TE MIKE GESICKI

    I don’t think it’s crazy
And he would be a good pick

  88. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Why are we up Tim’s gut? Is that the new Dolphins HQ?

  89. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Fitzpatrick was another pick we didn’t meet with.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Next year we have to remember to look only at prospects we didn’t met with so we can narrow down who we’re taking.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I’m told that is an outlier, and more often than not we do meet with the people we pick beforehand……someone spent a lot of time analyzing it last week so I’m just going to go with it…..

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Probably one of the reasons is Gase has a relationship with Saban and besides Fitz’s tape they already knew he was a good kid and loves football.

The Colts have back to back picks, they may be willing slide back 5 spots

I hope we don’t pick that crappy TE Goedert, i can’t see my self yelling GOOO—DIRT!

  92. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It was us that wanted Brice Petty last year. The equipment department wanted a live tackling dummy.

    Here’s ho hum version?
    YOUR PICKS
2: R2P10 TE MIKE GESICKI, PENN STATE

  95. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

When the Dolphins pick GOD ert tonight I will be running around my living room in circles yelling wooooo hooooooo wooooooo hoooooo wooooooooo hoooooooo, waving what ever I have in my hand (most likely a pipe or beer, hopefully the pipe because it will spill less) like a pennant.
