Dolphins 2018 Post NFL Draft Outlook

I’d say we had what most of us here at FU believe was a very successful draft, and for those of you have been here a long time, which is most of you, to get any kind of consensus on our drafts is normally impossible.  Despite that fact, along with the return of our starting QB, Las Vegas oddsmakers have us winning only 6 games.  In Tannehill’s worst season we were 6-10, not coincidentally, that was Joe Philbin’s last year as Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins.  I’m sure there are 3 major factors as to why they have us so low, and I believe first and foremost it’s the health of our QB Ryan Tannehill, and how long he’s been away from the game, 19 games to be exact.  When we cut Suh, we lost one of our best defensive players.  When we chose not to pay Jarvis Landry $15M + per season, we lost one of our most productive offensive players.

We know the losses, but I feel like they don’t consider the gains we’ve made strongly enough.  I think we finally got the back end help we’ve been missing here in Miami, and I’m pretty confident that Minkah Fitzpatrick will be playing a lot, right from the start.  He will instantly prove he’s better than anyone else we have as a deep safety, or even a LOS cover man on a TE, or bigger slot WR.  He will have a ton of opportunities, and will make the best of them.  I think Ryan Tannehill is healthy and ready to go, and although there is so much worry his wretched knee can’t hold up, look at Frank Gore who shredded his knees in college at U of Miami, and is still playing in the NFL 14 years later.  There was nothing special or unusual about Tannehill’s injury, and I say once again, it wasn’t two separate injuries, he had a slight tear that he tried to rehab without surgery, and then it finally tore later on.  Not devastating, it’s like a button on your jacket that’s loose, and then one day it just FALLS OFF!  It’s still just one button, and yes it was disheartening when Tannehill went down, it was a run of the mill knee injury,

In addition to Fitzpatrick and Tannehill, we finally drafted that receiving TE that gives all NFL DC’s nightmares.  We’ve been terrorized for years by them, but now we have one of our very own.  Mike Gesicki will make a difference here from day one.  I know they say TE’s historically start slow in the NFL, but if you watch the NY Giants,  you’d know that Evan Engram, a smaller version of Gesicki had 64 receptions and 722 yards and 6 TD’s last season.  I think Gesicki can easily duplicate that or better that.  He will additionally open the offense for everyone else.  Once he’s out there tearing up the middle of the field, he will garner more attention, which in turn will open things up for the run game, and our perimeter receivers, Parker and Stills, and also for short passes and screens to Albert Wilson and Jakeem Grant.

We have had lots of problems covering TE’s, and RB’s and we’ve seen LB Kiko Alonso burnt far too often.  The addition of Fitzpatrick and also LB Jerome Baker gives us flexibility.  I think we’re going to try and figure out who our primary LOS cover guys will be in both nickel and dime formations.  It might change a lot, but they have to identify which guys can get it done. Fitzpatrick, Baker, McDonald will all get the chance to be on the field more, since in today’s NFL, offenses operate with 3, 4 and 5 receiver sets so often that teams are in the nickel and dime more than ever.  We know what the issue is, and they drafted talent to combat it, in addition to signing T.J. McDonald last year.  You could even throw LB Stephone Anthony in the mix, big, fast LB who can cover.

We didn’t replace the huge hole in the DL after releasing Ndamukong Suh.  The fact is, even if we took Vita Vea or Da’Ron Payne, we still wouldn’t have filled that hole.  Suh was a beast, he played a ridiculous amount of snaps throughout his entire career, and easily led the Dolphins in that category.  The philosophy has changed, and we’re going to rotate fresh players in more often from now on.  At the moment, that’s Jordan Phillips, Davon Godchaux, Vincent Taylor, Gabe Wright and also DE/DT William Hayes.  Also keep in mind the cap money we get after June 1st, and I won’t be surprised in the least if we pick up a DT in FA at that point.  After the draft, veterans are often cut, so we’ll have some choices to bolster the DL.

I love the Kalen Ballage pick.  I know I’ve said it a bunch of times, but watch the kid play, and he’s a lot like Arizona’s David Johnson.  He’s a very reliable receiver, he has some giddyup running a 4.46 40 at 6’2 228.  He’s a tough short yardage back, but also one who has the breakaway speed to take it the distance.  Ditto on the pick of Durham Smythe, TE.  He’s the blocking TE to replace Anthony Fasano, and he’s a decent receiver as well.  When we’re running the ball, Smythe will be the in line blocking TE, and I’m sure there will be formations with both Smythe and Gesicki, with Gesicki split out.  You can run or pass from that formation, and also keep in mind that although Gesicki wasn’t asked to block much at Penn State, he will block here in the NFL.  He won’t be Durham Smythe, but he will block.

We also bolstered special teams in the draft with the selections of LB Jerome Baker, Cornell Armstrong, Quentin Poling, and K Jason Sanders.  In addition, I think we also got some help on the offensive line.  Acquiring Josh Sitton, one of the best pass blocking OG’s in the NFL, we definitely improved.  We got an OC we can count on being there the whole season, and who will be able to practice with his linemates when we traded for Daniel Kilgore.  LT Laremy Tunsil will be a better player having LG Josh Sitton next to him, teaching him his responsibilities and of course, having better play next to him.  If Ja’Wuan James is healthy, he will be a good player playing for his next contract, a good spot for us to be in.  Hopefully we both benefit by that, and we re-sign James after a great season.  Right guard is a question mark, but we have promise in up and comer Jesse Davis and veteran Ted Larsen.  Between those 2, they should be able to hold down that spot. Also, maybe last year’s draftee OG Isaac Asiata enters the mix and surprises.

6 wins?  FU Las Vegas!

    From the other article.

Steve, Gase has said many times that the offense has put the defense in bad spots too often because of short drives, too many 3 and outs and not enough points. That’s why he made so many changes with both coaches and personnel. Something had to change. Our defense is built to attack and it’s more effective with a lead or at least a close competitive game. When you’re down 13-3 at the half all the time the opponent is never in panic mode.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Thats ridiculous he’s supposed to continue to do the same thing with the same players, that didn’t work in the past.

That’s what the national media insinuates, based on our 32 ranking in the power poll, draft reactions, and what are they doing in So. Fl quotes we see/hear daily.

  2. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Good writeup, Mike.

I really get the feeling people don’t really know much about our team and just go by last year and that we moved on from some players so they immediately think bad team. This team does have talent and upside.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Possibly, or maybe Oddmakers will get more action on a “low” W total for us than say 7 or 8. It’s all about the action.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not just the oddsmakers, but sports pundits and NFL fans who only know a handful of players and just focus on that.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, I hear that. Generally we don’t get a lot of respect

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

To the average NFL fan out there — we lost Suh and Landry and have an injured QB coming back. And those are the guys who make the bets.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, yeah that’s what I was getting at.

  3. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Great take on it MIke E. And I’m one of them that likes the draft. You see a purpose to every pick. Feel better about it right after than any since……can’t remember when.

Not as sure as you about how much blocking Gesicki will do. Think we are gonna see him split out most of the time. He’s here to bust the seam and getting him into wide open spaces will be the goal. One of the few criticisms on him is that he is a “long strider.” Gonna want to let him get up to full speed and do his thing.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He will be split out, but if we throw a screen to his side, or a pass to the WR on his side, he will have to block, and that’s where I think he can be effective. He’s a line up against the DE and knock him on his ass, but as a move TE, I think he can learn to block effectively.

  4. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

While I’m not as high on the draft as some here!
I like what we did in FA!! And think we will add 1 or 2 more players as depth.

    I’m taking the over!!!!!!

  5. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Whats this about?????

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He’s lumped in with Kaepernick as persona non-grata

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Never mind I didn’t realize it’s part of the kneeler revolt!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What some people can’t seem to wrap their head around is that football people GMs and HCs, want players focused on playing football, not all the other stuff that is a distraction. It’s not about the owners and Trump. These players do it to themselves than cry foul.

  6. drg's avatar drg says:

Nice job, Mike. Seemed like a good draft that potentially addresses some holes. No stupid trades, so that’s a win in my book.

I agree that the concerns about Tannehill’s knee are overblown. I don’t see it affecting his game at all. We still need him to take it to another level though.

You could make an argument for about 2/3 of the teams in the league that they will win 8 or more games next year. It all boils down to health, schedule, and a lot of luck. If we don’t see the team trending in the right direction next season it’s probably time to change out the coaching/GM staff yet again.

I think we will be around that 8 win number and Gase gets another year to make the playoffs.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s time for this team to start making more big plays.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks drg! Man, I hope we don’t need to go through another coaching change, it’s just brutal to the roster, especially if a coach is hired that has different offensive and defensive philosophies. It’s a total reset, which sets back everything 3 or more years.

  7. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

We won’t get any respect until we earn it. So far we haven’t and the team is full of question marks and potential. There’s no reason other than fans holding onto hope to give this the team the benefit of the doubt until they do something to remove it.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I totally agree and that’s why I don’t care what most people think during the offseason. It’s not about what they/we fans think, it’s about how the team performs. My only issue with it is this idea we have no talent now because we traded Ajayi in-season last year, moved on from Suh’s contract and traded Landry this offseason which was also due to not wanting to pay him. Throw in Tannehill coming off of injury, and it’s as if we have nothing else which is just stupid.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

So what you’re saying is the entire premise for writing this article, and the article itself is pointless? I hate you SB 🙂

Minkah will probably be the safest.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Am sure will see more than one Fitzgerald jersey next year….and maybe some that go with Minkah. Should be a battle btwn him and Gesicki for most new ones bought.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – So does Gesicki buy #88 from Carroo, or does Carroo get cut and he doesn’t have to? lol

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Does make the jersey buying more difficult. But would pretty cool to have the first number in if Gesicki switches back to #88 after final cuts.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    are we cousins?

    Mike E,
I agree with your wife, but like Bookman, if I had Jake’s jersey it wouldn’t be someone else’s name on my back.

    Stanger,
I don’t own any jerseys. I won a Tannehill jersey a few years back at a fair for $5, but I gave it to my nephew.

  27. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The biggest thing the Dolphins need to get fixed this off season is the freaking penalties. 137 penalties for 1054 freaking yards!

    Biggest offenders last year
    Tunsil – 12
    Godchaux – 9
    Howard – 8
    Pouncey – 8
    Bushrod – 7
    Stills – 7
    Suh – 7
    Landry – 5

The tops three are still on the team. Gase needs to be up their ass this offseason.

when you only total 4923 offensive yards and give up 5371 yards 1054 yards is a HUGE FUCKING issue.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah that’s gotta get cleaned up. That’s on both the players and coaches. The coaches have to emphasize it more and the players have to be more disciplined.

  28. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

This is a relatively new situation for Miami, however. In 2014, the Dolphins were actually pretty low in the rankings, finishing the season with the third fewest penalties with just 81. In 2013, they had the fewest penalties in the league with 69. In 2012 and 2011, they had the fourth fewest penalties each season, with just 83 and 85, respectively. In 2010, they had the second fewest flags against them with 72, and in 2009 they had the third fewest with 78.

“2 more treatments”…..how nice is that?

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Yes but man it is kicking my ass right now. I think this is the worst I have ever felt

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Almost there Ken. You are past light at the end of the tunnel as you drive and time to get the sunglasses ready for when you leave it.

  30. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Stanger I think you need a Jason Sanders jersey. You have to support your kicker

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

wait until he beats out the FAU kicker at least. There is no guarantee that just because we used a 7th round pick on him he will make the team. We cut a 5th round pick for an UDFA a couple of years ago.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

lol – I ain’t special teams all the time. Gotta win my trust….and still regret getting that Franks jersey. Do wish I’d gone Denney years ago, but he was always on those one year contracts.

  31. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think Gase took a huge step towards fixing the penalty issue by getting rid of 3 of the top offenders.

When your leaders are commuting them what does this say to the others?

Especially Suh, his trying to time the snap was ridiculous, and set a fine example for Vincent and Godchaux.

This will be long and I copied and pasted this for you.

So what are the Dolphins getting with their newest crop of undrafted free agents?
Some feedback from draft analyst Tony Pauline and others:

        ▪ Michigan linebacker Mike McCray: Had 79 tackles last season, including 11 for loss and 4.5 sacks. Has had injury issues but is a big, physical inside linebacker at 243 pounds.

Pauline: “He’s a tough, smart two-down linebacker. I thought he would be drafted the last day. Getting him after the draft is good value.”

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein had thought McCray would be drafted in the fifth or sixth rounds. “McCray is a big, physical inside linebacker who plays with most of the characteristics evaluators want from an inside linebacker, but his limited range could hurt his draft stock. McCray could be a consideration for 3-4 teams looking to pair a big body next to an athlete at inside linebacker, but he’ll need to come off the field on passing downs. If healthy, McCray could become a backup linebacker with a chance to work himself into starting contention down the road.” (The Dolphins play a 4-3, of course.)

Zierlein quotes an NFL director of scouting as saying this about McCray: “He was a ‘dude’ coming out of high school, but injuries have slowed him down. He has most of what you want in a linebacker but he just can’t run well.”

Pro Football Focus: “Excellent run-defense grades over the past two seasons for Michigan, but his coverage fell off in 2017 and he had some very ugly games on his tape.”

        ▪ North Carolina linebacker Cayson Collins. Had 82 tackles, including 4.5 for loss, and two sacks last season. Had 217 career tackles and seven forced fumbles.
Pauline: “A small run and chase linebacker who’s 222 pounds. Runs in the 4.7s [in the 40-yard dash]. He’s the opposite of McCray; McCray is a two-down inside run stuffer. Collins is an [outside] run and chase linebacker.”

        ▪ Utah State cornerback Jalen Davis. The 5-10 corner is a playmaker, with 11 career interceptions, including five last season. He has four defensive touchdowns in his career, including three last season. He had eight sacks in his career, including four last year. And he has one forced fumble each of his four seasons and 37 passes defended in his career.

Pauline: “He has some decent stats but never really wowed me.”

Pauline: “He has some decent stats but never really wowed me.”Pro Football Focus said “Davis was a Combine snub largely due to his lack of size, but he showed well athletically at his pro day with a 36-inch vertical and 40-yard dash times in the 4.4s. On the field, Davis is a ball hawk who looks to make plays on the ball and has excellent ball skills when he gets there, as proven by his five interceptions along with his 12 passes broken up in 2017. Opposing quarterbacks didn’t have much success targeting Davis in 2017 and his 30.5 passer rating when targeted ranked third among all draft-eligible cornerbacks.”

ESPN’s take on Davis: “Davis is an instinctive playmaker who reads quarterbacks, plays the ball – not the man – and has above average ball skills. But he doesn’t play quite as fast as his timed top-end speed — he ran a 4.44 40 at his pro day — and his short shuttle time (4.50) is a red flag for a corner.”

        ▪ Central Florida defensive tackle Jamiyus Pittman: The 6-foot, 311-pound Pittman had 138 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss and 13 sacks in four years at UCF.

Zierlein: “The rise of UCF under Scott Frost coincided with the rise of Pittman’s NFL draft stock. The three-star recruit from Georgia is a short, stout tackle with plenty of energy to spare; he used that energy to earn first-team All-American Athletic Conference honors in 2017 (47 stops, 7.5 for loss, 4.5 sacks). Played outside for UCF this season, but will likely be a nose on the next level. Pittman plays with heavy hands and a jarring punch to take early control at the line of scrimmage, but he lacks length and initial quickness. Pittman’s power at the point of attack is a trait that teams can work with which gives him a shot at finding a backup role or an early practice squad designation.”

Pauline: “Decent player. Kind of like three technique tackle. He needs to play next to someone big who occupies the gap. He has to get a first step on opponents.”

        ▪ FAU running back Gregory Howell Jr.: Ran for 690 yards on 6.7 per carry last season. Scored 22 touchdowns in four seasons.

Pauline: “Howell was given a late sixth, early seventh round grade by scouts. He’s 215 pounds but more of a downhill runner.”

        ▪ Two small school pass rushers: Fairmont State defensive end/outside linebacker Quincy Redmon, who had 17 sacks in college and Notre Dame (Ohio) College defensive end Claudy Mathieu, who had 27 career sacks and five forced fumbles.
“Mathieu is a sleeper, very athletic but not really strong,” Pauline said. “He has to improve his strength. An edge rusher on small school level. I could see him being a practice squad guy.

“Redmon has terrific measurables but has to learn to stand up and play in space.”
The Dolphins haven’t announced their undrafted free agent signings, but others who have confirmed signing with Miami – through their Twitter accounts or school or parents – including UM defensive tackle Anthony Moten, FAU kicker Greg Joseph and Purdue offensive tackle David Steinmetz.

Five undrafted rookies made the Dolphins roster out of training camp (Torry McTyer, Chase Allen, Mo Smith, Eric Smith and Matt Haack).

To me the guys who will have a tough time making the team is if they struggle with the playbook or lack functional strength and/or speed. But the guys who are okay in all phases you never know.

Because of last year and Gase’s dissatisfaction with how the team performed, I think this will be as tough a TC as he can push it. And like he has said in the past, it doesn’t matter how you got here, it’s how you perform. So I would not be surprised if there are some surprising cuts this year. That has as much to do with culture change as anything – it’s not going to be easy or a given that you make the team.

    Mike,

I don’t want to go through another coaching/GM search either, but we need to see signs that the team is headed in the right direction. Our offense was decent against a pretty weak schedule two years ago. We were trash last year, but hard to expect much with Cutler at QB. Defense has been a joke for two years now.

I like Gase and hope he’s the guy long term. Need to see more from this team though.

Mike, I re-watched more Ballage highlights and I get not every play is always like this but what I saw was a big back who doesn’t waste much time getting going, he can run people over, outrun others, shows good balance, catch passes and sometimes down the field. He looks like a bigger version of Drake but probably doesn’t have the stop and go quickness. But he doesn’t have too.

  63. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

25PPG is the magic play off number. Most of the teams the scored an ave of 25 made the playoffs, however it is really the point difference that matters. The Dolphins had the third worst in the league point diff last season at -112. How we still won 6 games while being outscored 112 points I don’t know.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Being shutout twice and scoring 6 with time running out in the Jets game will do that. Also not scoring much in a bunch of other games.

  64. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Only the colts Browns and texans gave up more points than us last year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

And some of those points were off of turnovers and the offense putting the defense in bad field position often.

  65. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I throw last year out. We were awful on offense so damn often, the defense never had a chance, and for the most part, they sucked too, even when the offense finally got going. It was a bad year from the start.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep! I think the defense got worn down both mentally and physically and with all the personnel changes they never all got on the same page. This team needs to find the best 53 who are ready to ball. Just like they say with the best starting 5 on the OL, the entire roster has to be all in with do your job and no BS!!!

I think that’s Gase’s mindset this year. He’s tired of nonsense and mistakes.

Probably not a big deal, we can still sign him to a contract if he proves worthy

That was reported to be happening. He’s on a prove it last year of a 4 year rookie deal. It’s all on him now. He knows the playbook now and it’s time to ball or head to journeyman status.
