Dolphins 2018 Post NFL Draft Outlook

I’d say we had what most of us here at FU believe was a very successful draft, and for those of you have been here a long time, which is most of you, to get any kind of consensus on our drafts is normally impossible.  Despite that fact, along with the return of our starting QB, Las Vegas oddsmakers have us winning only 6 games.  In Tannehill’s worst season we were 6-10, not coincidentally, that was Joe Philbin’s last year as Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins.  I’m sure there are 3 major factors as to why they have us so low, and I believe first and foremost it’s the health of our QB Ryan Tannehill, and how long he’s been away from the game, 19 games to be exact.  When we cut Suh, we lost one of our best defensive players.  When we chose not to pay Jarvis Landry $15M + per season, we lost one of our most productive offensive players.

We know the losses, but I feel like they don’t consider the gains we’ve made strongly enough.  I think we finally got the back end help we’ve been missing here in Miami, and I’m pretty confident that Minkah Fitzpatrick will be playing a lot, right from the start.  He will instantly prove he’s better than anyone else we have as a deep safety, or even a LOS cover man on a TE, or bigger slot WR.  He will have a ton of opportunities, and will make the best of them.  I think Ryan Tannehill is healthy and ready to go, and although there is so much worry his wretched knee can’t hold up, look at Frank Gore who shredded his knees in college at U of Miami, and is still playing in the NFL 14 years later.  There was nothing special or unusual about Tannehill’s injury, and I say once again, it wasn’t two separate injuries, he had a slight tear that he tried to rehab without surgery, and then it finally tore later on.  Not devastating, it’s like a button on your jacket that’s loose, and then one day it just FALLS OFF!  It’s still just one button, and yes it was disheartening when Tannehill went down, it was a run of the mill knee injury,

In addition to Fitzpatrick and Tannehill, we finally drafted that receiving TE that gives all NFL DC’s nightmares.  We’ve been terrorized for years by them, but now we have one of our very own.  Mike Gesicki will make a difference here from day one.  I know they say TE’s historically start slow in the NFL, but if you watch the NY Giants,  you’d know that Evan Engram, a smaller version of Gesicki had 64 receptions and 722 yards and 6 TD’s last season.  I think Gesicki can easily duplicate that or better that.  He will additionally open the offense for everyone else.  Once he’s out there tearing up the middle of the field, he will garner more attention, which in turn will open things up for the run game, and our perimeter receivers, Parker and Stills, and also for short passes and screens to Albert Wilson and Jakeem Grant.

We have had lots of problems covering TE’s, and RB’s and we’ve seen LB Kiko Alonso burnt far too often.  The addition of Fitzpatrick and also LB Jerome Baker gives us flexibility.  I think we’re going to try and figure out who our primary LOS cover guys will be in both nickel and dime formations.  It might change a lot, but they have to identify which guys can get it done. Fitzpatrick, Baker, McDonald will all get the chance to be on the field more, since in today’s NFL, offenses operate with 3, 4 and 5 receiver sets so often that teams are in the nickel and dime more than ever.  We know what the issue is, and they drafted talent to combat it, in addition to signing T.J. McDonald last year.  You could even throw LB Stephone Anthony in the mix, big, fast LB who can cover.

We didn’t replace the huge hole in the DL after releasing Ndamukong Suh.  The fact is, even if we took Vita Vea or Da’Ron Payne, we still wouldn’t have filled that hole.  Suh was a beast, he played a ridiculous amount of snaps throughout his entire career, and easily led the Dolphins in that category.  The philosophy has changed, and we’re going to rotate fresh players in more often from now on.  At the moment, that’s Jordan Phillips, Davon Godchaux, Vincent Taylor, Gabe Wright and also DE/DT William Hayes.  Also keep in mind the cap money we get after June 1st, and I won’t be surprised in the least if we pick up a DT in FA at that point.  After the draft, veterans are often cut, so we’ll have some choices to bolster the DL.

I love the Kalen Ballage pick.  I know I’ve said it a bunch of times, but watch the kid play, and he’s a lot like Arizona’s David Johnson.  He’s a very reliable receiver, he has some giddyup running a 4.46 40 at 6’2 228.  He’s a tough short yardage back, but also one who has the breakaway speed to take it the distance.  Ditto on the pick of Durham Smythe, TE.  He’s the blocking TE to replace Anthony Fasano, and he’s a decent receiver as well.  When we’re running the ball, Smythe will be the in line blocking TE, and I’m sure there will be formations with both Smythe and Gesicki, with Gesicki split out.  You can run or pass from that formation, and also keep in mind that although Gesicki wasn’t asked to block much at Penn State, he will block here in the NFL.  He won’t be Durham Smythe, but he will block.

We also bolstered special teams in the draft with the selections of LB Jerome Baker, Cornell Armstrong, Quentin Poling, and K Jason Sanders.  In addition, I think we also got some help on the offensive line.  Acquiring Josh Sitton, one of the best pass blocking OG’s in the NFL, we definitely improved.  We got an OC we can count on being there the whole season, and who will be able to practice with his linemates when we traded for Daniel Kilgore.  LT Laremy Tunsil will be a better player having LG Josh Sitton next to him, teaching him his responsibilities and of course, having better play next to him.  If Ja’Wuan James is healthy, he will be a good player playing for his next contract, a good spot for us to be in.  Hopefully we both benefit by that, and we re-sign James after a great season.  Right guard is a question mark, but we have promise in up and comer Jesse Davis and veteran Ted Larsen.  Between those 2, they should be able to hold down that spot. Also, maybe last year’s draftee OG Isaac Asiata enters the mix and surprises.

6 wins?  FU Las Vegas!

I remember that photo of you and Zach from when ya first posted it several years ago (don’t recall if it was on the SS or FME). It’s so VERY refreshing to know that there are ‘stars’ out there who are down to Earth… especially in this day and age, right?

THAT MAN BELONGS in the NFL HOF, IMO, Mike E. And you telling the rest of us of your positive experience with him only reinforces that belief in me. I’m REALLY happy that ya got to meet that man, man!!!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree he belongs in the HOF, because he wasn’t just HOF player, he’s a HOF person as well. Me too, it was such a great experience. My favorite part of the conversation with him was when I was lamenting when he the neck injuries and concussions were getting to him, and he bought the hyperbaric chamber. He said “You know about that? – Man, you’re hardcore!” He should meet all of you guys and then he’d really know what hardcore is!

SI’s Bruce Feldman wrote. “But I’m going with the seventh-fastest player. The 223-pound Baker was timed at 4.37, and he looks every bit that fast on film. In his debut season as a starter, Baker piled up 83 tackles to go with 9.5 tackles for loss and two INTs. Better still, Baker was at his best in big games: He delivered a pick-six at Oklahoma; notched 13 tackles at No. 8 Wisconsin and came up with 15 tackles and an interception against No. 3 Michigan.”

Also goes to show you, I have met Mike E, he’s been in my house and I cruised with him in his Haitian canoe to the MetLife takeover for the Jets game a few years back, lol. We’re the same height but I’m a twig compared to him. That’s how big even a long shot like Zach had to be to even have a chance in the NFL. Mike and I I are 5-9ish and Zach is actually 5-11. But Zach is 235 where Mike is probably 175 and I’m 160 soaking wet. LOL

Many peeps have trouble keeping weight off, I have always been the opposite keeping it on. I was the kid who had to drink milk and protein shakes to keep up. I had to use speed and quickness to survive. But I always had a good arm – pitching, catching, 3rd base, outfield, QB. Was a solid amateur tennis player too.

I realized I couldn’t matchup at the next level physically so my focus went to music which was another passion.

Bolts Bury Bruins 4-1 in what the experts (and odds-makers) call an upset. Clearly, Tampa Bay has taken the momentum in this series after getting blown-out at home 6-2 in game 1. Now it’s the Bruins who are up against the wall. Another loss at home will leave them down 3 games to 1, with 2 of the last 3 games scheduled for Tampa. That said, it’s now a fact that the visiting teams have won more playoff games this season than have the home teams, a big departure from the past.

    Morning FMe/FU Mob.

It’s been a while. Don’t want to bring the post-draft good mood down, but not been around recently as dad passed away just before Christmas. He was 90 going on 91 and had a good life/was the longest lived member of his side of the fam, so no regrets. I said everything I ever wanted to to him before he passed and did my best for him, so I’m as at peace as I can be. At the same time mum caught an awful virus going round up there (which probably carried dad away along with 8 others in the care home he was at this winter) and she ended up hospitalised. On NY eve, they found a shadow in her chest and it’s a non small-cell lung cancer, which, after many tests, it was revealed has metastasized to lymph nodes in her chest. She started targeted ITK treatment but had to be hospitalised again after an adverse reaction and is now stable and on a half-dose regime. Prognosis is months, but no one knows how many. It could be years but not many I suppose.

I always read the blog (sometimes more skimming than scrutinising) and saw a lot of the drama on here, but pleased to see it all ironed out now. I suppose experiencing what I have whilst nursing mum has changed me as a person and inevitably given me a different outlook on life. One thing that hit home more than anything, especially recently with Ken’s struggles, is how important it is to be good to each other and show kindness, compassion and forgiveness. It makes the world go round and without it we are lost.

Which brings me to Ken. I am so sorry to hear about your struggles big fella. I have seen it first hand in my nearest and dearest and I feel for you. Know that you have a lot of folk in your corner who are all rooting for you and praying for a good outcome. Try to keep your pecker up as you approach the final lap and stay positive. It must help. Below is a tribute from across the water.

I also hope you are doing well Top. Fingers crossed for a full recovery.

Kudos to Son for nailing Baker to the Browns and Minkah to the Fins.
Kudos to MF13 and BBM for nailing the doubling down on TEs

Amazing the options of Hulks I’m seeing. My pic was too big but Ken will stomp this just like Hulk stomps everything.

On to our draft, it was good. Naysayers are right tho. Tannehill is the lynch-pin but he’s been that for over 6 years. Our backup QB situation is terrible though. No different than Denver’s who has been in worse QB shape for a while now.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I thought at a minimum we were going to draft a QB in the mid rounds as a backup/developmental project

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

My only criticism of the draft is we didn’t do that. I hate the idea of Osweiler as the primary backup

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Me too, Ken. Osweiler is one of the worst backups in the league. I don’t want to be negative but I still remember the panic when Tannehill went down. They were clueless.

The Hulks keep coming. I am impressed

  37. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I agree with you on QB Ken. This is what I’ve been saying. I’m sure someone will tell us that the FO saw it differently like it’s a valid rebuttal, but that’s this blog sometimes.

  38. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

So if we drafted Luke Faulk, or Kurt Benkert, or Mike White, and Tannehill goes down, one of those guys was going to lead us to the playoffs? You know what, if Tannehill goes down, we go with Osweiler, and if we lose 13 games, so be it. We’ll get our QB next year.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

It just depends on what you want from your backup. After the past few years, we’ve seen backups play at a fairly close level to the starters. Osweiler is a camp body. He’s a 3rd in line bad. A guy a team gave away a pick just to get rid of. A guy who couldn’t start in Cleveland, couldn’t keep backup status at Denver the second time, and is unable to win games. I know people think Gase is some offensive genius, but the results haven’t met that standard yet.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I would love any backup we have to do as well as the starter, but even if we drafted one of the guys I mentioned, I don’t think that would happen this year. Like I said, if T-Hill goes down, we’ll get our QB in the top 5, because we’re gonna lose a lot of games.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

No we won’t go to the playoffs in that scenario but maybe we will develop a guy who can take us there. We already know what Osweiler is

Not saying I want any of that to happen, but a full draft with all our picks in the top 5 of every RD could really help our team.

    Mike,
please don’t do that thing that others here do where you create a false argument in response to a clear point. It’s not about the playoffs, it’s about having valid competition for the right to back up Tannehill who hasn’t played in a year and a half. If he goes down and we don’t make the playoffs with the other two guys, we’ll never know because the front office didn’t even try.

We did the Stej game last year !! I’d prefer to see a different team. The Lions don’t travel well so Tickets will be cheaper as will availability for Lodging. Plus Stej fans are Dicks. October has been the tradition for Fest games.

  46. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Mike E:
I would love getting a top 5 QB too but there is value in drafting developmental backups. Certain teams have done very well by doing that such as Green Bay and New England. I believe every couple of years you should draft a QB

  47. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    SB7,

It doesn’t make sense from an executive viewpoint but it does allow the cleanest break imaginable. They’ve went all in on Tanny. I don’t think he’s had this level of support since HS and it’s got to feel good and encouraging. A bad year would probably entail a complete makeover no matter the reason.I’d never gamble with my chosen vocation in that manner but it’s cool to watch from a distance.

  48. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

SB – I’m not making any argument. I’m telling you that I don’t believe any of those mid to late RD QB’s like Faulk, Lauletta, or Benkert would make a big difference over Osweiler this year if Tannehill went down. I’m also telling you I’d rather lose 13 games than go 6-10 or 7-9 with Osweiler or any of those other guys because our team could probably use more talent, it could really change our team big time.

On the morning of Oct. 21. Dolphins national scout Ron Brockington arrived six hours early before kickoff of the Crimson Tide’s game with Tennessee that day.

Walking through the facility that morning, he noticed Fitzpatrick watching film by himself in the defensive backs room. It was an unusual and inspiring scene on the morning of a game. The image of Fitzpatrick struck Brockington, as the junior already put on his suit, donned headphones to cut out distractions and appeared locked in seeking one final edge.

Brockington took a picture on his iPhone and sent it to fellow national scout Matt Winston and general manager Chris Grier with the caption: “Gameday Minkah is here watching video.” (Two clapping hand emojis followed). “I dropped the mic,” Brockington says. “I could not believe that. Top professionalism, I could go on and on.”

    Mike E,

Our FO has been incredibly fortunate the past few drafts in getting top end talent. The problem is they do a very, very, very etc poor job of keeping it long term. Minkah, Harris, and Tunsil are very talented people. I consider Howard, McMillan, Tankersley, and Drake to have a lot of talent too. Almost letting go of a talented RT seems short-sighted. Most of our guys from 6-7 years ago are gone so hard to build with other team’s guys. A top 5 draft is worthless if you don’t start seeing results.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

New Age – I’m talking about a draft full of top guys. Yeah we got a good prospect here and there, but if we drafted at the top of every RD, we could make a killing. In any case, I hope that doesn’t happen, and hope Tannehill will take us deep in the playoffs.

  51. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we drafted one of the 1st rd QBs I’m not sure any of them would be good enough as rookies to lead the team to the playoffs either. I think it was an overrated class. Not that none of them will pan out in time, but I’m not sure any of them are ready year one.

Let’s hope Tannehill does not go down so stop saying it. LOL

Son, you may not specifically have said that the Browns will pick Baker, but this is what stuck in my mind catching up on the blog after the draft:

They’re all coming around to what I said in December. Mayfield is the best QB in this draft.

I hope the Browns do take him. I don’t want him on the stej no sir.

………… kudos worthy in my book!

  56. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If Baker, Smythe or Ballage don’t contribute that’s when the criticism of not taking a QB has a lot more merit

I wanted a QB but by the time we got to our pick in the 6th, there wasn’t anything worth taking

We had options earlier though and picked different players

I happen to like those picks though. There is a good chance those players bring more to the team than any QB would have

I think it’s fair criticism. It’s he only negative I take away too – but it also may have been in our best interest to take the players we took instead

  57. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

    Mike,
Like I said, we’ll never know. I just find it funny that for the last several years before draft the blog’s majority said we needed to address QB for the same points I’m making, then when we don’t everyone changes their minds and says we didn’t need to get one. Even if you don’t draft one, grab one of the UDFA’s. I just want competition/depth for the most important position on our team.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I thought we were going to draft a QB too but we didn’t. But I didn’t think that a rookie QB would play this year.

I also thought we would draft OL but we didn’t for the first time in our history. I hope what we did this offseason pans out. 🙂

  58. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

SB – I made it clear I wanted Mayfield – It didn’t happen – Now stop bitching about it already! 🙂

  59. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Also, hopefully Gase can do something with Osweiler if we do need to rely on him.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He was the 2012 Draft equivalent of Josh Allen. He had the possibly the best arm in that draft. I think his problem is above the neck though.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Hopefully with a full off season to work with him, Gase can work some magic.

  60. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – Report came back that deGrom is fine and he will make his next start. Whew!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I saw something about that but didn’t know the details. What was the concern?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He hurt his elbow swinging and missing last night, pitched the next inning, but came out with elbow pain after the 4th. If he was out for a big stretch, I could see us sliding big time. We’re sliding as it is, but that would be brutal.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah the team is struggling to score again.

  61. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wyo – Bookman’s is pretty damn good, I also liked ER’s

  62. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – Same story – We’re not hitting, starters can’t go further than 5 innings, bullpen is overworked. Gotta fix it soon, or we’ll drop far behind. Braves and Phillies are in the hunt, and you know the Nats will get straightened out and go on a tear.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. It’s amazing how the promise of our young guns has become very ordinary or worse. Harvey is a mess.

  65. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Possible that Gase saw no QB in that 2nd tier would be worth the pick? I thought Fales was beginning to play better and better in the 2nd half of his game.

Petty? Nah…. worst passer rating in the league…..worse than Osweiler.

  66. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Drake led the league in yards after contact per attempt. Not bad….

He is the one I’m most excited to see this year. Give that man the ball!

Ken – I’d rather get a top 5 QB next year than a mid or late RD QB this year.

    Reply

Nope, not me. I would much rather draft our future Aaron Rodgers at #24 or our future Dan Marino at #27.

Even if we need to move up 5 or 8 spots…..Just saying.
