Dolphins 2018 Post NFL Draft Outlook

I’d say we had what most of us here at FU believe was a very successful draft, and for those of you have been here a long time, which is most of you, to get any kind of consensus on our drafts is normally impossible.  Despite that fact, along with the return of our starting QB, Las Vegas oddsmakers have us winning only 6 games.  In Tannehill’s worst season we were 6-10, not coincidentally, that was Joe Philbin’s last year as Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins.  I’m sure there are 3 major factors as to why they have us so low, and I believe first and foremost it’s the health of our QB Ryan Tannehill, and how long he’s been away from the game, 19 games to be exact.  When we cut Suh, we lost one of our best defensive players.  When we chose not to pay Jarvis Landry $15M + per season, we lost one of our most productive offensive players.

We know the losses, but I feel like they don’t consider the gains we’ve made strongly enough.  I think we finally got the back end help we’ve been missing here in Miami, and I’m pretty confident that Minkah Fitzpatrick will be playing a lot, right from the start.  He will instantly prove he’s better than anyone else we have as a deep safety, or even a LOS cover man on a TE, or bigger slot WR.  He will have a ton of opportunities, and will make the best of them.  I think Ryan Tannehill is healthy and ready to go, and although there is so much worry his wretched knee can’t hold up, look at Frank Gore who shredded his knees in college at U of Miami, and is still playing in the NFL 14 years later.  There was nothing special or unusual about Tannehill’s injury, and I say once again, it wasn’t two separate injuries, he had a slight tear that he tried to rehab without surgery, and then it finally tore later on.  Not devastating, it’s like a button on your jacket that’s loose, and then one day it just FALLS OFF!  It’s still just one button, and yes it was disheartening when Tannehill went down, it was a run of the mill knee injury,

In addition to Fitzpatrick and Tannehill, we finally drafted that receiving TE that gives all NFL DC’s nightmares.  We’ve been terrorized for years by them, but now we have one of our very own.  Mike Gesicki will make a difference here from day one.  I know they say TE’s historically start slow in the NFL, but if you watch the NY Giants,  you’d know that Evan Engram, a smaller version of Gesicki had 64 receptions and 722 yards and 6 TD’s last season.  I think Gesicki can easily duplicate that or better that.  He will additionally open the offense for everyone else.  Once he’s out there tearing up the middle of the field, he will garner more attention, which in turn will open things up for the run game, and our perimeter receivers, Parker and Stills, and also for short passes and screens to Albert Wilson and Jakeem Grant.

We have had lots of problems covering TE’s, and RB’s and we’ve seen LB Kiko Alonso burnt far too often.  The addition of Fitzpatrick and also LB Jerome Baker gives us flexibility.  I think we’re going to try and figure out who our primary LOS cover guys will be in both nickel and dime formations.  It might change a lot, but they have to identify which guys can get it done. Fitzpatrick, Baker, McDonald will all get the chance to be on the field more, since in today’s NFL, offenses operate with 3, 4 and 5 receiver sets so often that teams are in the nickel and dime more than ever.  We know what the issue is, and they drafted talent to combat it, in addition to signing T.J. McDonald last year.  You could even throw LB Stephone Anthony in the mix, big, fast LB who can cover.

We didn’t replace the huge hole in the DL after releasing Ndamukong Suh.  The fact is, even if we took Vita Vea or Da’Ron Payne, we still wouldn’t have filled that hole.  Suh was a beast, he played a ridiculous amount of snaps throughout his entire career, and easily led the Dolphins in that category.  The philosophy has changed, and we’re going to rotate fresh players in more often from now on.  At the moment, that’s Jordan Phillips, Davon Godchaux, Vincent Taylor, Gabe Wright and also DE/DT William Hayes.  Also keep in mind the cap money we get after June 1st, and I won’t be surprised in the least if we pick up a DT in FA at that point.  After the draft, veterans are often cut, so we’ll have some choices to bolster the DL.

I love the Kalen Ballage pick.  I know I’ve said it a bunch of times, but watch the kid play, and he’s a lot like Arizona’s David Johnson.  He’s a very reliable receiver, he has some giddyup running a 4.46 40 at 6’2 228.  He’s a tough short yardage back, but also one who has the breakaway speed to take it the distance.  Ditto on the pick of Durham Smythe, TE.  He’s the blocking TE to replace Anthony Fasano, and he’s a decent receiver as well.  When we’re running the ball, Smythe will be the in line blocking TE, and I’m sure there will be formations with both Smythe and Gesicki, with Gesicki split out.  You can run or pass from that formation, and also keep in mind that although Gesicki wasn’t asked to block much at Penn State, he will block here in the NFL.  He won’t be Durham Smythe, but he will block.

We also bolstered special teams in the draft with the selections of LB Jerome Baker, Cornell Armstrong, Quentin Poling, and K Jason Sanders.  In addition, I think we also got some help on the offensive line.  Acquiring Josh Sitton, one of the best pass blocking OG’s in the NFL, we definitely improved.  We got an OC we can count on being there the whole season, and who will be able to practice with his linemates when we traded for Daniel Kilgore.  LT Laremy Tunsil will be a better player having LG Josh Sitton next to him, teaching him his responsibilities and of course, having better play next to him.  If Ja’Wuan James is healthy, he will be a good player playing for his next contract, a good spot for us to be in.  Hopefully we both benefit by that, and we re-sign James after a great season.  Right guard is a question mark, but we have promise in up and comer Jesse Davis and veteran Ted Larsen.  Between those 2, they should be able to hold down that spot. Also, maybe last year’s draftee OG Isaac Asiata enters the mix and surprises.

6 wins?  FU Las Vegas!

YES I Agree Rob, I do see it. We shouldn’t run out of shot gun on first down. Hopefully Gase sees it this season too.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This debate ignores that out OL allowed presence in the backfield too often before our backs got going – Ajayi, Williams and Drake. It wasn’t all on the RBs but they also contributed with some bad decisions at times.

The main problem we had with our running game is we couldn’t lineup and run when we had to. We were good when the playbook was open. Let’s hope we can change that this year.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

In order to have success you have to impose your will on the other team, you have to successfully run against the other team when they know you’re going to run. I’m talking 4 to 6 yards, you have to require that other team to add resources to stop you from imposing your will. then you weaken and take advantage of other areas of that team. this also pays dividends for your defense as well in ball control.
that would be a recipe for success in the NFL.

we lack this with Drake in there on first down

The funniest thing about Rob’s argument is he keeps saying well look the team disagrees with you because they went and got two power backs…..

I think Ballage get’s most of his yards with his eyes.

Mike E; It’s one thing to spend money (see Daniel Snyder & the Redskins). It’s quite another to spend it wisely (see Steve Ross & the Dolphins). I’d be EVEN HAPPIER THAN YOU’D BE if Ross bought the Mets because it might mean he’d first sell the Fins to finance the Mets deal!! It’s taken Ross 9 seasons to register a W-L record 16 games below .500 (65-81). He might fall more than 16 games below .500 IN JUST ONE SEASON AS METS’ OWNER! –AHHH THE POSSIBILITIES!

  7. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I think Ballage and Drake have pretty much the same style. They make people miss, but not with jerky jukes.

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Gore was very tough between the tackles runner most of his career. I don’t think he can push the pile like he used to, but if he’s used less, he might.

I think Gore will be our starting RB

  11. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am not down on Gore at all. I think he is a very good back and has been, for like 3 or 4 career’s worth. But I disagree strongly with you if you think he could beat out Drake (in 2018). He has been a 3.5 ypc guy the last few years. That’s the thing about averages…..they include the big runs and the negative runs. You think Gore’s 3.5 is because he runs for 3.5 ever time? COME OIN! (for effect not yellin’)

  12. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

ORob, Ballage is nothing like Gore. Gore 5-9 215 is a short, squatty cut and slash back who runs low to the ground and then powers his way for as much as he can get. Ballage is a 6-2 228 upright runner who uses his size to overwhelm at the 2nd level and then outrun the last level. They couldn’t be more opposite. LOL

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I was talking about in the video the way he stops and goes, he’s elusive with quick moves like gore.

  13. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I hope Gore has a great year. I hope Ballage has a great year and I have a good idea that Drake will to. I wouldn’t want anyone else starting against the Pats in this game last year.

  14. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

about Drakes stats, he only started like 4 games, that’s not enough touches to rely on, Drake was a 3rd down RB in gases eyes last year, at the start of the season he was behind Ajayi and Williams, when we dumped Ajayi he was still behind Williams until Williams got hurt. add that into the RB acquisitions this year.

This should tell you what Gase thinks about Drakes game. he’s a 3rd down specialist that can take it to the house, he’s not a bell cow

  15. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Whoa how did that happen?

I think the first mistake with the X-men movies is the focus in Wolverine

He’s the main character in every one. X-men is a team comic. Some of the ones that didn’t get much attention: iceman, gambit, nightcrawler and colossus are some of my favorites. They really missed the boat in highlighting each of those characters

I hope they do dark Phoenix right
They totally screwed up the age of apolcolypse
    ———————–

I think the real reason they made Wolverine the focus was because Wolverine was the most marketable character. More people know and care about him than say Gambit or Collossus for instance. It would have been too esoteric for mass appeal. That was the beginning of this age of good comic book hero movies before there was a major audience, and it has evolved since then. For me, it didn’t diminish the good xmen movies though, and they have tried to evolve it to be more team oriented in the last couple with mixed results.

The Marvel MCU has the right blueprint, and has created a market that can sustain heretofore unknown characters. (I actually got to use heretofore in a sentence, woohoo!) NOBODY except true Marvel geeks knew who the Guardians of the Galaxy were before their first movie came out, but there is an audience for it now that was willing to give it a try.

It would be fantastic if Fox would negotiate a deal to give the rights to Disney like Sony did with Spiderman, but I don’t see it happening unless the next Xmen movie or two really bombs.

Apocalypse was terrible. They totally ruined all the best parts of the Age of Apocalypse storyline. I have no hope that Dark Phoenix is going to be any good.

Venom is going to SUCK as well. Sony just doesn’t get it.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Yeah I agree
It would be nice Fox move aside

The age of apocalypse is pretty much the pinnacle of the X-men comics and they made it super corny

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Totally with you on Age of Apocalypse. It’s my favorite Xmen story, and he’s my favorite villain (well Magneto is the best, but not always a true villain). They completely ruined it. It didn’t even resemble a fraction of a hint of the original story, apocalypse was totally corny, and the story seemed slapdash and cheap.

  17. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Rob I will concede. What ever man. So Gore is the only player in the history of the game that Averages the mean of his runs.

  18. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I like our RB group. The debate is getting silly. We’re in good shape. So much depends on the efficiency of the entire offense. I like the makeup of our offense this year better than last year. More weapons to choose from. I know at TE we’re relying on rookies, but I see at least 75 catches from them at the minimum between the two.

  19. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

    Cespedes

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

ORob, no Drake is not a bell cow, I said when he was last year because we were down to him and Perry at one point. But he was still productive. Gase does not want any of his backs touching the rock 25+ times per game.

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Think about this if all goes well.
QB – if Tannehill is good to go and he plays well – not saying amazing. LOL
RB – they all do their job, could be a very productive position.
TE – more of a threat and normalcy at the position than in years.
WR – we have plenty of guys to make plays and score.
OL – the starting 5 and 7 game day is there, it’s all about staying healthy and depth.

Say it with me Rob, come on you can do it, say it.

Let’s talk about another position, since RB may be our deepest with stars.

What do you guys think of Spence, and a rotation of DTs instead of 1 guy playing 90% of the snaps?

I always thought Suh took plays off when he was doubled, which is a good use of your energy, but wouldn’t it be better to have fresh guys out there all the time?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Do we have enough talent at DT to keep the OL off of the LBs?

What I don’t want is to go down the we suck, but let’s keep it status quo road.

  41. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gase said the plan is to use more of a rotation on the DL this year and to keep their snaps down so they are fresh all game. We might keep 10 DL. We had 10 at times last year.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I see only 9 since Hayes plays both DT and DE. Doesn’t do any good to add another DT unless he’s worthy of a spot in the rotation.

With the 9 guys we have now for DL, they can all play. I’d think we’ll be looking to get guys more PT, instead of less that a 10th DT would bring.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

4 DTs and 6 DEs with Hayes playing both DE and DT. We might use more than two DEs at times as well similar to what the Giants did back in the day with their Nascar package. Maybe not all 10 dress for the game, but for depth. Like I said we had 10 on the roster at times last year.

I’ve been pimping James as our best OL the past 2 years. nobody cares. it’s more fun… and easier… to rip the OL for everything. lol

  52. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Our defense was pretty terrible last year. I think it’s a little pie-in-the-sky to expect that they’re going to be a whole lot better this year. Our offense, even in 2016, was mediocre at best and terrible at worst. Again, it’s a little crazy to think that we’re all the sudden going to become this Powerhouse offensive scores 25 points a game. I see another mediocre year around 8 and 8.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Our D to start the year was pretty good, but our O couldn’t score, as the year went on the no depth D wore out, but they were still pretty good at times.

The O was bad all year with no OL. The 2016 O wasn’t good, but got it done when needed on the most part, after the bad start.

It wouldn’t surprise me, if both the O and D were significantly better. We got rid of the free lancers and replaced them with a lot of depth, and some pretty good players.

The Lakers this year started out with no stars, but had a lot of depth, their bench outscored the opponents by about 20 a game, and generally were +10 – +20. I can see the Fins beating teams in this fashion, because the depth will keep them fresh and able to play harder when on the field.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I can see the defense getting better. Why not? What if McMillan makes a difference? What if Harris, Tankersley, Godchaux and Taylor make that jump from year one to year two when most young players improve? Howard made that jump last year and showed what he can be if he cleans his game up some more. Getting Lippett back who was an ascending corner for us. Minkah and Baker could help the defense be better. Will Anthony who was traded for after game 1 last year be better now that he’s been in the defense and will have the entire offseason working with the team. That’s a lot of young players who could make a difference.

Maybe Quinn has a big year as a pass rusher. The defense being on the same page should help. We went through like 8 LBs last year. There was no cohesion. McDonald missed the first half of the season with a suspension then had to get back up to speed on the fly.

I know that’s a lot of maybes and ifs, but that is what has to happen for the defense to be better. That’s why we drafted and added these players. It won’t be the same defense as last year in a lot of areas.

As for the offense, there are a lot of changes there too. All of a sudden does happen when more players make plays. There is talent there to be very explosive. They have to go out and do it. I for one feel better about the OL this year. It’s all about keeping them on the field and building chemistry as the season goes on. We haven’t been able to do that in quite some time. Keep your fingers crossed. LOL

Shit, I’ll buy the kid the plane ticket! (Herd will just have to take care of his room and board!)

Not joking Herd. I would love to meet you face to face and hoist one (or 10) and I will spend 3-4 hundred for a ticket for your boy. (as long as he’s a Dolphins fan, or at least fakes it)

  55. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Seat draft is over….and I made an executive decision to get better seats rather than the block we normally have. My choice was section 317 (that’s like the 40) on rows 10, 13 and 15 or setting up way up top in one of the corners (323 or 313) like we had last year at rows 27-29.

Much better seats and at the same $65 price. Much closer to the field and much closer to midfield….and figure we can all move around anyhow.

If you guys want to do the block in the corner instead…..can probably still make that happen as well. But this was our only chance at these seats better than anything we’ve ever had before.

Our Defense will really benefit from our offense scoring more points. No defense can support an offense that only averages 17 points a game. I think we’ll have a good D if we can actually keep up and and even play with a lead.

That’s true. When either unit is deficient, it puts a huge strain on the other side.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s a big part of it. Longer sustained drives that result in points as opposed to turnovers along with too many 3 and outs will put the defense in a better position more often. We hung them out to dry too often last year.

Last year was a clusterfuck on so many levels. Not much went right and we had a lot of injuries. I believe 12 players finished the season on IR.

In a manner of speaking, of course. Armando corrected nearly 50% of the BS that Volin wrote. In other words, and if I were Volin, I’d feel like I just got taken out back to the shed.

I didn’t read it that way. I think Mando just said Ross confirmed all of Volin’s story was true except that the intent was financial.

It seemed to me that they were both on the same page and really Ross simply could have been lying about the financial part. The thing is Ross, through mando, confirmed that Ross didn’t want to make the pick and wanted to trade down

And some one leaked that to volin, the only reason Mando new anything about it was based on Volins report and then Mando asked Ross directly

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No not that it was the only reason, just the type of student of the game Minkah is. With him you get high character, football intelligence, athlete and playmaking ability. He checks off all the boxes.

There have been some good ones too. To me it’s about the player, not just school or system. Good or great players are self motivated. Nothing else matters, they fit in because they make plays.

People get nuts about Gesicki not being a blocker. We didn’t draft him for that. He is that 6-6 250 receiving TE who can run, jump and catch. The basketball/volley ball history. He’s a mismatch receiver because he’s bigger, faster and more athletic than most covering him. One of those guys we don’t have. Forget the blocking. We drafted Smythe for that and he’s a better receiver than given credit for.

We have more options on offense than we’ve had in years. Enjoy it! 🙂

  92. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL, the Kings did not throw that series. If Horry doesn’t make an amazing shot that series is over in 5.

Then the Kings had it wrapped up in game 6 after taking the leas with almost no time left on the clock, then on an inbound, Kobe ran through Mike Bibby in a blatant charge for a layup to take the lead. Bibby was left bloodied. If the ref watching that play makes the easy call (there was a great camera angle which showed the ref looking right at it) the Kings win the series right there.

Game 7 was a choke job. You could argue the Kings missed all those FTs on purpose, but that is a stretch since it wasn’t the Kings ‘throwing’ anything to get to that point.

  93. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bat will hate reading this. LOL

In 2010 NHL playoffs not only were the Flyers down 3-0 to the Bruins in the series but also down in game seven 3-0 and came back to win the series. That’s sports, you never know until it happens.

The Flyers had that happen to them not in as drastic a fashion but lead the Devils 3-1 in the playoffs in 2000 only to lose the series in game seven. It happens.

    Here ya go…

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

He was such a smooth player. The Kings franchise changed the second we got him. Vlade was a big piece too, but Webber was the man.

The game 7 choke didn’t surprise me. Peja was a sniper, but he often choked in big moments, and Webber has his own history of choking as we all know from Mich, lol. Like I said, not surprising, but it still tore our hearts out. There really isn’t any question we had the best team in the league that year.

  95. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Steve,
Ugh, give me a break. You want to go play by play, and say oh, he may have fouled him on that one. The league clearly wanted a game 7, and everybody and their mother except for the occasional Lakers fan saw the same thing (almost every Lakers fan I know says they were given that game).

The Kings did not get an inordinate number of favorable calls at any point in that game. They might have benefited on one or two like any team might. The Lakers benefited from bad calls the entire last quarter which is when it matters and what kept them in the game. And the final series where Kobe trucked over Bibby was egregious. Hell, Donahue came out and admitted the fix was in and gave a break down of exactly how they did it.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The Lakers scored 21 of 31 points in the 4th on FTs, including 11 FT points in the last 2 minutes. Kings got 7 FT points the entire quarter. Lakers shot 34 FTs to 18 for the Kings.

So out of the 9 penalties called against the Lakers, what 2 or 3 earlier in the game might have been bad calls and I’m supposed to mention that because it proves what? That the clear fix wasn’t a fix? Or that the Lakers didn’t benefit because a bad call or two earlier in the game evened it out? Weak.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LMAO, OK clearly I am still bitter about this.

I think this is the most emotion I have ever felt in posting on this board. Think I’ll eat some pizza.

I was screaming for 3 quarters watching that game all the calls the kings were getting, then in the the 4th they got a couple calls, but nothing out of an ordinary game.

  96. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think it was entirely about a game 7, not making sure the Lakers won the series. If the Kings hit even half their FTs in game 7, they would have won. And I thought the rest of the series was called even, but Game 6 was pretty indisputable.
