Camp Battles – TE

At the moment of this writing, the Dolphins have 6 tight ends on the roster, but realistically, at most we will carry 4, and even more likely 3.  The two guaranteed to stick are the most recent draftees, 2nd RD pick Mike Gesicki and 4th RD pick Durham Smythe.  After Gesicki and Smythe, the coaches seem to really like A.J. Derby who was picked up last season after DEN waived him.  There is also 5 YR veteran MarQueis Gray,  and recent pickup Gavin Escobar who played for the Cowboys for 4 seasons.  Also still hanging around is Thomas Duarte,  Dolphins 2016 7th RD draft pick.  We have better depth at TE than any time in recent memory, and this should be a fun battle to see play out because the 3rd and possibly 4th spots should be really competitive.

Mike Gesicki TE – 6’6″ 250

2018 2nd RD pick, Gesicki is the kind of athletic receiving threat many fans have been craving for more than a decade.  4.54 speed, 41.5″ vertical, 6.76 3 cone, this guy is a fast, agile, explosive athlete.  He will be in a tough battle for playing time with his fellow draftee Durham Smythe, because what Gesicki lacks in blocking skills, Smythe has in spades.  Gesicki has made it clear he is willing to block and learn how to, and wants to become a more rounded NFL TE.

________________________________________________________________

Durham Smythe TE – 6’5″ 253

2018 4th RD pick, Smythe was a big part of the success of the run game at Notre Dame.  Known for his excellent blocking, toughness and tenacity, he truly helped propel the Irish’s running game.  Seldom used as a receiver, just 28 receptions and 244 yards and 6 TD’s in 4 seasons, he definitely has value as a receiver too.  Smythe’s blocking skills should enable him playing time as an inline TE and also as a 2nd TE.

_______________________________________________________________

A.J. Derby TE – 6’4″ 255

Derby is a former 6th RD pick of the New England Patriots who was eventually cut by NE and picked up by the Denver Broncos.  In 2016 Derby caught 16 passes for 160 yards with the Broncos.  Derby played only one season at TE for Arkansas,  so he came into the NFL pretty inexperienced.  He has good speed, running the 40 in 4.67 at his pro day.  In DEN in 2017, Derby caught 19 passes for 228 yards and 2 TD’s.  For the Dolphins, Derby appeared in 9 games, catching 2 passes for 20 yards.  Not a huge body of work for the soon to be 27 year old TE, either in college or the pros, but the coaches here see potential, although he will have to realize some of that potential in TC and preseason games to stick here.

________________________________________________________________

MarQeuis Gray TE – 6’4″ 263

Gray has spent the last 2 seasons here in Miami, but has played for Cleveland, Tampa, Buffalo and Minnesota.  In 2014, Gray made his NFL tour having a cup of coffee with the Bucs, Vikes and finally settling in with the Bills.  The Dolphins picked him up in 2016 and has played appeared in all 32 games, with 7 starts.  As a Dolphin, Gray has 15 receptions for 184 yards.  Gray has lined up as a 2nd TE and also H-back/FB, and has shown decent blocking ability.

_________________________________________________________________

Gavin Escobar TE – 6’6″ 260

Escobar played 5 seasons for the Cowboys and although he didn’t get a ton of opportunities, he certainly made the most of them.  Escobar caught a total of 30 passes for 333 yards and 8 TD’s. Not a blocker, he’s definitely a receiving TE.  Escobar has long arms and big hands, and despite the fact he doesn’t have good speed, he has good reliable hands and with 8 TD’s in only 30 receptions, he makes them count.  I think Escobar and Derby are will be in a tight competition to claim what may be the last 1 or 2 posts on the roster at TE.

_________________________________________________________________

Thomas Duarte TE – 6’2″ 244

Duarte has spent the last 2 seasons on the PS after being drafted in the 7th RD of the 2016 NFL draft by the Dolphins.  Duarte was a WR at UCLA who has bulked up with the hopes of being a move TE in the NFL.  Not a blocker, but a smooth, athletic route runner who really came on his senior season at UCLA, catching 53 passes for 872 yards and 10 TD’s.  The Dolphins like Duarte, they have kept him around for 2 seasons on the PS, and I think his best bet to remain with the team would most likely be in that capacity again.  He will have a hard time beating out veterans Escobar and Derby, but a very strong showing could give him an outside shot.

Let’s see, what can we troll today… RT, nah, that was yesterday, Ajayi vs Drake, nah, been done, Landry, nah, everyone is on the same side. Ah fuckit RT it is 😁

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

You use that term loosely, I doubt evaluating a players ability is hardly being a “troll” if you want to see a troll look in the mirror.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You don’t even know what a troll is. Try googling it. I posted it for you yesterday, but you surely didn’t think it applied to you. It’s all in fun though. As long as we keep it light like yesterday.

What else would we have to talk about this time of year? Politics, music, other sports…

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think the Mets are. I’m indifferent at this point. My only hope is that if they continue to spiral down that they will realize major changes need to happen, and therefore they trade deGrom, and then continue to sell off and start the rebuild.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

And just think, 3 short years ago you were battling the Royals in the world series, the Mets came out to start this season on fire! had everyone fooled

Yes, i also think he read my comments yesterday.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – Yeah, they fooled me too early on in the season. Without Cespedes in the lineup, they are so different. Even with him they struggle, but w/o him they’re ghastly. They’re too old, too slow, they need some young talented players with some speed. Cespedes can’t stay healthy, Bruce is definitely struggling with plantar fascitis. The starting pitching has been money for the last month or so, but we can’t score. If we don’t hit a HR, we can’t manufacture runs.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Somehow i don’t feel sorry for you… at least you have the $$$ to get players

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t expect any sympathy, we’re just discussing shit. We have money, but the Wilpon’s are reluctant to spend big $$$ contracts. We’re not a big market team like the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, we’re a tier below them.

    M13,

I agree with your sentiment about Tanny and the organization’s response to Landry.

    ……chirp….chirp…..

Take the high road, and let that loudmouthed prick run himself in circles talking shit if that’s what he wants to do. The best response is for Tanny and this team to go out and have a great year.

And if Cleveland ends up in the 3-13, so much the better.

And if Landry puts up worse numbers than he did when Tanny was throwing to him, that’s icing on the cake.

  9. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, the Mets need a change in philosophy and that can only start with a total rebuild.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No doubt, which means beheading Sandy Alderson. Well, at least firing him. lol

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL, being that the Wilpon’s don’t want to be big spenders, the best way for them is to build a young team. Fans will go to the ballpark to watch a fun and exciting team of young players. The team they have now is like watching paint dry.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Watching a wall poorly painted dry. Now the defense is breaking down, and the bullpen implodes daily, and the offense steadily disappoints. They have nothing. It’s hard to even judge Conforto fairly because no one is hitting in this lineup including him

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Don’t know what’s up with Conforto, I thought he was going to be a dynamic hitter, average and power.

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – I think Conforto has been overrated like so many other outfield prospects in the past in the Mets organization. Alex Ochoa, Jay Payton, Alex Escobar, Lastings Milledge etc . . .

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That sucks! So many people who watched Conforto coming up thought he was the real deal. Some compared him to Don Mattingly.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Hope I’m wrong. I think a lot of people in the organization think he’s still going to blossom. I just didn’t really see any signs of greatness, but the funny thing is, he was knocked for his defense, and I think he’s been a pleasant surprise in that regard.

  11. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think that’s what is cost for my family to keep their Giants season tickets. It was awhile ago so I don’t remember the exact amount but I know it was a few thousand dollars per ticket.

Some people who had like 8 tickets handed down for decades at field level had to pay 20K per ticket which is absurd.

  18. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I wish reporters, especially the local beat reporters would get it straight. Tannehill DID NOT have two major knee injuries in the span of 8 months. He had a partial tear, did not get it repaired surgically, but instead tried stem cell treatment and targeted exorcise to try and strengthen the muscles around the ligament and then completely tore the same ligament in the preseason last year. It is nothing like tearing it and then tearing a surgically repaired one or tearing a different one. For the discussion of healing and coming back from the injury it is exactly as if he had only torn it once.

  19. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

PSL’s are fucking stupid! I don’t understand how any team can get their fans to pay $400.00 per game for the right to buy a ticket to the game! (going off Steve’s $4,000 above) that includes two preseason games! it’s $500 per game if you just count the season tickets!

    1. Ryan Tannehill: I’m not sure things could have gone any better. Tannehill clearly is back to 100 percent with no limitations. He arm strength, his agility, the way he goes about his job, have all been very impressive. He has embraced this offseason with enthusiasm and leadership and there is absolutely no reason to believe it won’t continue in training camp. His 70-yard beauty to Danny Amendola may have been the best play of OTAs. Still, donning pads and taking a hit is another obstacle he must clear. Final thought: Sure looks good to go.””””

Of all the position groups my biggest concern is still for the line backers. What we KNOW from last year is Kiko struggled at OLB after doing passably well as MLB the season before. After that we don’t “know” anything.

They have hope for McMillan, but we as fans never got to even see him play, now he is coming back from an ACL and we still have never seen him play. Anthony? Who knows? The rest? Untested, undersized, who TF knows? I HOPE it works out, but I do not feel any better now than I did last year at this time.

XM Radio is the same. $280 to renew. I let it expire every year. After 1 week I have received DAILY mailed deals, after 2 weeks they are taking $80 off, after a month is it $120.00 less for the year.

Car insurance the same. Raise my rates every year. I switch companies and then the old company keeps trying to lure me back with rates cheaper than the year previous before I quit them.

  29. D's avatar D says:

Again, my thing with the 2 injuries isnt that it means anything more than 1. Even if he had had 2 surgeries, the bounce back from the second one is no less than the first. Its not degenerative, other than the age of the person healing from it. Age is the degerative part, the procedure is the same for the second one with the same success rate.

So again, the argument over 2 or 1 is not part of the concern, the part of the concern for me is 12/11/2016 to June 2018 away from football. Im looking at it from a standpoint of never hit his stride and then sidelined for a year and a half. Also i dont really care what the media is saying about Luck or Tanny, i care how Tanny performs for us and i could care less how Luck plays for the Colts.

Im on board with seeing whats going on with him. Im ok with wait and see. Im ok with being hopeful, etc, but some are insinuating you cant be skeptical of him and his recover simply because of wanting to live in that land of hopefulness. I completely disagree with that. I think being hopeful is better than to thing he is going to suck it up and us ride out another miserable season, but skeptical is the best i feel we can be right now. I like koolaide and all but some of you are sweetening it so much you could stand a spoon, on edge, in a glass of it.

He steps through time and space to make those deliveries, makes the deliveries in what seems like some time passes between them but there are in essence simultaneous as he steps in and out of the time continuum at precisely the point in time he is supposed to. He is able to do this due another of his supernatural abiliies, ie to determine when any human being falls asleep and wakes up.

He also his the ability to read your soul to determine if you have been doing good or bad things, once again re-enforcing the idea he is a supernatural being and not just wielding magic.

    • D's avatar D says:

So let me ask you, do you feel like right now, he is exactly where he was before, like the injury didnt happen, and the time off the field didnt happen. Can you, with a straight face tell me you think none of that matter and there is 0 reason for concern over it?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No and I never said any of that since he was cleared to go this spring. He’s just as up in the air as is much of this team for me. Haven’t seen this team as currently constructed ever play before. There are guys coming back from injuries, 2nd year jump guys we need to perform, rookies and some new veteran faces we’re relying on.

I get why much of the media doesn’t see a good team, but the 3-13 stuff is silly to me. The roster has talent and potential. They’re ignoring that. If you went down the line and said if this guy does that and that guy does this etc. you can see playoffs. But a lot has to happen. There is no history to go by because the 2016 team is not this team.

  35. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

D, the difference between one or two surgeries can be significant How the knee is repaired also weighs heavily into the equation. Scar tissue being the main reason. Also, he hasn’t been away from football. He attended every meeting he was in on the game planning every week he stood next to the coach with headset every play

    • D's avatar D says:

If you guys want to equate that to playing it then i guess i see your point, but then again, i absolutely know there is no way you can equate the two. Playing the game isnt watching the game from the sidelines or sitting in meetings, the timing doesnt come from watching a screen. The pocket preseence doesnt come from snaps at practice where they arent allowed to hit you. Its just not the same guys im sorry to mess up yall’s dreams.

If they do a good job there would be no scar tissue with the first, but again i dont care lol. Nothing about the injury or second injury debate does anything to make more more or less confidant.

Click the link below to see what happened to Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday night. Got hit pretty hard, and it was confirmed as a tornado…

  44. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The last time I ever tripped on shrooms we we picking them and eating them in the field and start trippin and decided to tip some of the cows (which were awake by this time) and I got shot in the back with Rock salt shot from a 20 gauge that was the last time I ever went on to another man’s property in the middle of the night

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

How long ago was that Rock? And how did you know what kinda gun he was using?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was replying to your what kind of gun comment. A 20 gauge is less powerful than the popular 12 gauge so again less harm done.

Never touched a firearm in my life Tim. Had no clue you could tell what hit you without seeing the weapon involved. But am obviously clueless as clueless can be on such. But like said….it was the story that interested me.

Last time I tripped on shrooms was in the late 90’s camping on a private mountain with live music and a cool scene. I played on stage as well. Wow!! Scary stuff.
    ————-
Yeah, man… it’s CRAZY! We’re up in the mountains over here (Appalachians), and tornadoes aren’t supposed to be able to form, due to that fact; it’s not as though we’re living in the flat-lands of the mid-west.

About 3 weeks ago, a near tornado hit about 1/4 of a mile from my house… funked a lot of things up (thankfully not for me), but it wasn’t a confirmed tornado. Then, THIS happens.

I just don’t get it, but over the last 8 years or so, we’ve been under more tornado warnings than the last (I dunno) 100 years or so? THAT’S NUTS!

And even IF one wants to blame ‘man-made global warming’, why isn’t this happening more often in the flat-lands… WHY THE MOUNTAIN REGIONS?!!

Walker used to think I was on crack when I told him that the humidity in my area RIVALS SoFlo humidity… I was NOT kidding. And when a cold front comes through as it did here on Wednesday, this type of $#!T now happens here… and far too often for my liking.

I’m glad you Jersey cats were spared from that storm, as it broke up before it got to y’all. Prof Lou is alright, too. We’re lucky it hit a shopping complex and not a residential area… WHEW!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Climate change is real just don’t think it’s “all” human created and specifically industry in a capitalist society. 😉

That said, too many humans pollute way too much and act like slobs all too often not caring about anything but themselves. We are fucking up our oceans. Plastic bags aren’t God’s will or organic. It’s human created poison that we’re aware of and still don’t care. That shit needs to stop!

  58. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Tim,

I was making a point that even IF true, ‘man-made climate change’ can’t explain why the mountains are getting hit with tornadoes with more frequency (proportionately) than the flat-lands… it doesn’t add up in scientific theory. Anyway… we’re digressing…

To YOUR point… YES! Me must be good tenants here of Mother Earth. Nothing disgusts me like seeing all kinds of litter on the side of the road, litter floating in a creek, oceans being polluted, or a Big Biz pumping their byproducts back into the ecosystem. I am SO with ya.

We just must NOT take our eye off of CYCLICAL climate patterns. Just as Mars made it’s closest approach to us a couple of years ago (and it won’t be that close to us again for another 100+ or so years), we get closer to the sun than normal at times. Some events (such as near-annual ‘100 year events’) can be explained by as much.

And just remember… WE (humans) didn’t invent or telegraph the orbit of Haley’s Comet… nor can we abort it’s 76-year come around. The Earth will recycle us, just as it had the dinosaurs… when it was an average of 136 degrees Fahrenheit in the Cretaceous Era, prior to an E.L.E.

Stanger, it was 29 years ago! Damn. SMH…anyway me and my buddy were up late getting drunk / high/ into trouble / what you got? and it was really foggy so we decided to see if we could find any schrooms. So we rode out on his motorcycle (I am embarrassed to admit I rode bitch) out west on Pembroke road, out past Douglas road and we parked his bike up against the split rail fence and went out in the field to search. We were already stoned / drunk / etc so we were being asses laughing / making noise. We found a bunch of mushrooms and ate a couple while we were still searching. There was this wallow where the cows laid during the day and it was full of mud. We started peaking and decided to try and tip some cows because we had heard of it but never done it.

The fucking cows were awake, but we were stupid and fucked up so we tried to push them over anyway. (A cow will kick your ass man if they want to) Next thing you know there’s a flood light blinding us from like 15-20′ away and a voice yells out something like “you mother fuckers, I’m tired of you always fucking around on my land I’m gonna kill you now” (not really sure. LOL)

my buddy and I go “Fuck” and drop everything and take off running towards his bike. He ran just to the right of the wallow. I ran right into it.

Next thing I know I was lifted off my feet and landed in the mud and shit on my face and I was on FIRE. I bounced / levitated back up and in one stride cleared the wallow and like to more strides was at and over the fence. My buddy had his bike going and I jumped on the back and we took off.

I still thought i was on fire, in my mind I literally thought I was on fire from my right arm, shoulder, right side and right ass cheek and kept screaming at my buddy that I was burning. Remember I was totally peaking when I go shot.

I had to talk him into taking me back to his house, but he wouldn’t let me come inside because I was a mess, covered in mud, shit and blood. I was cold, in shock, tripping and bleeding from 20-25 holes that wept and pussed for a week. I wound up huddling on the side of his house between the air conditioning condenser and the wall because it was blowing hot air. My buddy totally got accosted by his parents and busted and had a bad trip in his room…..and forgot about me.

  60. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I never went to the hospital or doctor or anything. The next day after probably the worst night of my life that I can remember I got into his pool and soaked for a few minutes, washed as much of the crap out of my clothes and went back to my parents house and slept it off for a couple of days and covered it up with my parents. (they probably knew something was up.

So after the game what would normally be a 30 minute walk turned into an hour and a half as we plodded through the snow. LOL
