Camp Battles – LB

Oh yeah!!!  This is the unit that has me excited, because we haven’t had good play at MLB in a while, and this year, Raekwon McMillan is back and ready to be the tackling machine we have missed.  I’m not going to count T.J. McDonald, or Minkah Fitzpatrick, or Reshad Jones in this article, but we know they all will be rotating in on passing downs and basically playing nickel LB, whether they officially call it that or not.  These 2 things, Raekwon being there to stop run plays, and the combination of the safeties and LB Jerome Baker in coverage make me feel much more confident about our defense going forward.   The need for Kiko Alonso to be the guy in coverage is now over, and the Dolphins will be in better hands for it.  We’ve seen enough of him unsuccessfully chasing players catching footballs and being a good 5 yards behind them.

We currently have 10 LB’s on the roster, but once we get down to the serious cuts, we’ll probably have only six remaining.  Let’s look at what we have, and who I think sticks, and who I think doesn’t.

Kiko Alonso – LB  6’3 239  28YO

Alonso has been a steady performer the Dolphins.  He played and started in 15 games in 2016, and all 16 games in 2017.  Although he struggles in coverage, he’s been a good player for us.  Last year Alonso finished with 115 total tackles (79 solo), along with 2 sacks and 2 FF’s.  Kiko will be playing mostly on the weak side which I think is exactly where he belongs.  In 2016, he had the huge INT and TD return for 60 yards.  I think he’s a little under appreciated here, but he’s been a solid, dependable player.

____________________________________________________

Raekwon McMillan – LB  6’2 248  22YO

Raekwon was injured in the season opener covering the first punt of the year as he collided with teammate Deon Lacey.  He tore his ACL, but he is now fully recovered and ready to take the reins of this defense as the defensive signal caller, the MLB.  The big 250 LB ran a 4.6 40 at the combine, and he had a very nice career at Ohio St.  I think McMillan will be the difference maker in this LB corps.  Last year Chase Allen and Mike Hull filled in some, and while Allen flashed some, I don’t think he made the impact that McMillan will for us this season.  He’s already shown he’s ready as even early in practices in OTA’s, McMillan was adjusting the defense and putting players in the appropriate position.

____________________________________________________

Stephone Anthony – LB 6’3 245  26YO

The SLB is less set in stone than the WLB and MLB spots are.  At the moment, Stephone Anthony is manning the SLB spot, but he may face some competition from rookie Jerome Baker, and possibly even Chase Allen.  The former 1st RD pick (#31) of the New Orleans Saints started out as a MLB, but the Saints coaches felt the strain of the mental aspects of the game lessened his play, so they tried to work him at OLB, but after a promising rookie season, his play fell off and then so did his playing time, which made him expendable for a 5th RD pick last season.  He will be given every chance to win the job, but he’s going to have to show a little something, because the 5th we spent on acquiring pales when compared to the 3rd we spent on Jerome Baker.  This may be the last chance for Anthony to be a starter.

____________________________________________________

Terrence Garvin – LB  6’3 242  27YO

Garvin is basically a ST’s standout.  He can also provide depth, but Garvin’s meal ticket is his special teams prowess.  Garvin has played for the 3 NFL teams, and at each stop, he’s been the ST’s ace.  Garvin was signed in 2013 by the Pittsburgh Steelers as an UDFA.  He played 3 seasons for the Steelers, and then was picked up by the Redskins in 2016.  Last season he played for the Seattle Seahawks.  Garvin has started only 4 games in his 5 year career.

___________________________________________________

Mike Hull  – LB  6’0 235  27YO

Hull was signed as an UDFA here in MIA in 2015.  Hull appeared in only 3 games as a rookie in 2015, but played in all 16 games in both ’16 and ’17, with 4 starts.  Hull plays special teams, so he that’s where his value is, plus he can play MLB in a pinch, but just don’t expect a lot.  He will continue to be a special teams player and a backup if he makes the cut.

__________________________________________________

Jerome Baker – LB  6’1 229  21YO

Baker was our 3rd RD pick (#73) in the 2018 NFL Draft.  Baker now gives us 2 LB’s drafted from Ohio State (Raekwon McMillan).  His strengths are Kiko Alonso’s weakness, but Kiko’s strength is Jerome Baker’s weakness.  Kiko is tough playing the run, while Baker struggles to beat and shed blocks in the run game, and gets wiped out too often.  Baker’s strength is pass coverage, where he is a bit above average in that regard, and that’s Kiko’s weak point, he doesn’t cover well.  A combo of these 2 players would be ideal, but Baker could eventually replace Kiko on the weak side, or he can also displace Stephone Anthony on the strong side.  In order to do either of the two, Baker is going to have show more toughness beating blocks and making tough tackles, and continue to show development as a coverage LB.  It’s likely Baker is more of a depth player and ST’s player his rookie year, but a strong showing in TC and preseason games could change that quickly.  He also will likely get to play some nickel or dime LB if he proves competent in the preseason

_________________________________________________

Chase Allen – LB  6’3 250  25YO

Allen was signed in 2017 as an UDFA.  Allen appeared in all 16 games, and was forced to start 4 games due to injuries (McMillan) and cuts (Maualuga).  Allen definitely flashed some ability finishing with 33 total tackles (24 solo) along with a FF.  He will continue to be a ST’s player, and can provide adequate depth at any of the LB positions.

_________________________________________________

Quentin Poling – LB  6’1 235  24YO

Poling was Miami’s 7th RD pick in the 2018 NFL draft (#227).  He is another athletic player, somewhat in the mold of Jerome Baker, but Poling played at Ohio, not Ohio State.  He’s a decent cover LB, and likes to chase and tackle.  At Ohio, Poling made 43.5 tackles behind the LOS, in addition to 18 sacks, and 7 INT’s.  He will have to continue to make those type of plays in the preseason to make the cut.  The best chance for Poling to make it would be if the Dolphins don’t see enough from Stephone Anthony, which is a possibility.  Right now I’d give him an outside shot, but if Hull or Anthony or Allen are cut, that could give Poling the in.

________________________________________________

Frank Ginda – LB  6’0 245  21YO

Frank Ginda was signed a week ago as an UDFA.    he was signed right after LB Mike McCray unexpectedly decided to retire from the NFL.  Ginda was a fine player at San Jose St.  Last season, Ginda finished with 173 total tackles (94 solo) which led the NCAA in tackles. He shows good instincts, and always flows to the ball.  He needs to work on shedding tackles, but Ginda is a player.  He’s somewhat of a longshot, but if he can show the same type of play he had at San Jose St, he might be a surprise roster invitee.

________________________________________________

So that’s the LB’s, and again, I’m pretty enthusiastic about this group.  I can’t wait to see Raekwon manning the middle, and I’m encouraged that if Stephone Anthony doesn’t step up his game, the Dolphins have at least 2-3 guys that can replace him and give us something.

    OUCH!!!
    _______
Ouch is right, and this Mets organization needs to be bitchslapped. If they believe they can carry on as is, making minimal changes and adding low to mid level major league talent and be competitive, they will find out they are dead wrong. My only hope is that in the offseason, they make some trades and get back some serious young talent, once they have their GM in place, because I don’t give a damn about the 2 year window they see as opportunity to win, I see it as foolish. What would compound the foolishness is not signing deGrom or Wheeler to long term deals (4 or 5 year contracts), or not trading them, and then having both walk w/o any compensation. That’s my greatest fear with this organization.

    __________________________________________
look at their competition, the raiders just got gruden and i’m not sure he will come out of the gates winning, Denver has been struggling the last couple of years, their only real threat is KC who lost smith and now has a new inexperienced QB, So it may be a SD year to win the division.

Those “projected” contracts are absurdly low. If James plays really well this season, he could be looking at close to double what the author projected.

YOUNG STANGER: Chris Archer has been the best pitcher on the Rays for the last few years. But this year he’s been fighting injuries and inconsistency – – and, clearly, has not been a dominant force in the AL East. Since the Rays have no chance to catch either the Red Sox or the Yankees, cheapskate owner Stu Sternberg is in an “unloading salaries

They were talking about this on Fox Sports Radio this morning. The question was which player was going to slide this year based on age. Brady was the first player mentioned. Wouldn’t that be nice?

They said when it hits it will be in the legs and he won’t be able to slide around the pocket like he once did, then the hits will start coming and he’ll be looking at the lineman coming at him instead of downfield, then it’s all downhill😀

not that “you heard it here first,” but i thought Lady-boy looked really old against us last year — (no spring in his step, as you say) and also on that missed pass reception in the SB (same thing, his mind said “jump,” but his legs said “wrong decade”)

The loss of Patricia i think is also underrated. BB is now an old guy, and old guys don’t have as much energy, even though they think they do. He’s not the same man that used to be his own DC for several years.

If Sony Michel can fulfill his enormous potential, he will take some of the pressure off both tommy* and that defense, but that is a huge burden to put on a rookie RB, esp with no deep threat at WR.

What if he misses a block (like all rookie RBs do) and Gisele has to watch her husband get nailed?

The worst part about it (IMO)? We had no business drafting a WR so early in ’16… let alone trading up for one. And NO, we can’t play the hindsight card: we had no idea back then that we’d eventually part ways with Jarvis.

While I can’t disagree with that, you can’t take away from the GMs who landed these young bucks who’ve already made the Pro-Bowl.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Also after Landry, Stills and Parker, who was the depth at WR heading into 2016? Just because Carroo hasn’t panned out, doesn’t mean the team had no business drafting a WR. The way Gase wants to run his offense, he needs fresh legs and depth at WR.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You go through the draft and see someone falling, based on your board, you make a trade that has good value in it. What more can you ask for?

You cant be timid and not take risks, if draftees dont work out you have to go back and look at the evaluation process.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Just because some of these players taken after Carroo made it, doesn’t mean they would’ve had the same success for us.

  66. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just had an electrician come to give me an estimate for some outdoor lighting, and we go down to the basement to check out the electrical panel, and he sees all the Dolphins stuff, and says “You ready for football season?” “I see you’re a Dolphins fan”. I say hell yeah, can’t wait, how bout you, what’s your team? He says, “I didn’t want to say anything, I’m a Patriots fan” lol

  67. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – I had no problem with the Dolphins drafting a WR, I just hate that they gave up 3 picks for the wrong one.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s done it hasn’t panned out. When you make a trade like that and it doesn’t work it’s always easy to criticize because it wasn’t worth it.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No one on here liked that pick, but it is what it is.

I hate giving up draft capital, but you really go into a draft looking for 3 or 4 guys that will start or be close to a starter, and if you get that you call the draft a success and move on. I believe we accomplished that the year we drafted Carroo.

  68. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Correction to a Carroo post I made above, he was drafted as an insurance policy to losing Stills, not Landry.

  69. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The greater point I’m trying to make: Carroo (at least thus far) has NOT panned out for us, after investing major Draft capital in him. And that it took 3 picks to land him in the third round, we could have used those picks to select others (Dak, for instance).

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It was a big swing and miss, that’s all there is to it. They thought they got the right guy, they whiffed.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The point Tim and I are trying to make is why go there? Why dont we also talk about missing out on Brady 5 times, or any other player drafted after the 1st round that became a star? What’s the point? We know guys every year drafted later make an impact.

  70. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We did land Grant in the 6th the same year so it sometimes balances out. I expect to see Grant more involved in the offense this year.

  71. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Didn’t we draft Tunsil, HOWARD, Drake the year we drafted Carroo? Looks pretty good to me.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

That’s not the point, but yes… it was a good Draft overall.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I saw your point, but that goes without saying, like Tim mentioned you could do that with every team. We all know the pick hasn’t worked, no sense in beating a dead horse.

  72. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  73. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve – You’re a major stat hater! 🙂

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No I’m not, I love stats, but you cant make an opinion based off of them. I know you’re JBB, but wanted to clarify things, because I can see why you’d say that.

  74. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I also wish Carroo would break out but something always seems to keep that from happening. His own performance and I believe he had minor offseason surgery that set him back this offseason. Yet until Isaiah Ford recently banged up his shoulder, he was supposedly having a good camp thus far. Things have a way of balancing out. The Carroo trade didn’t set this franchise back in any way. Sure maybe we missed on some other players, but like Steve and I have been saying, you can do this with every team in any round. You just have to hit more than you miss.

I hear both Tim and you, Bro!

Perhaps I’m just nitpicking, but I strive for being the very best we can be. Mishaps like LC3 (just as Dion Jordan and DT3) will occur, but I could see us being even BETTER than our great 2016 Draft class.

I’m not even trying to be a pessimist… I’m just seeing how our A- report card could have been an A++! I’m all about 100% efficiency.

My greatest flaw is trying to be 100%. Heck, I’m the guy who gets pizzed off when I misspell a players name! 😉

But truth be told, our last several drafts have been NICE!

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Pretty much. Her Gma is from Japan and she grew up eating it. She managed restaurants and got tired of working 80hr weeks for someone else. The place we are in was available and she talked me into it. LOL

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So Mike what did the Pats fan say when you asked him if winning so much becomes boring?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He said he likes to concentrate on player development, and he’s also fascinated how many really good players Belichick lets go, and how easily he replaces them. I get that, we’re all fascinated by it too.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Winning so much? We dont win too often, we lose too often, should’ve won LII, and the the 2 against the Gmen, and every game we’ve played since #12 was drafted.

Dolphins need to draft a QB this year.
    ————
So I see a comment like this and wonder… what if we didn’t trade 3 picks for Leonte Carroo? What if we’d drafted Dak Prescott in ’16 (as I suggested), instead?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

There was NOBODY higher on Dak Prescott than ME, on ANY Dolphins board… I can guarantee y’all that.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Then he would’ve played last year for us, we would’ve made the playoffs, cut Ryan this year and in 2018 our record would be 6-10 with an over priced Landry, Suh and Pouncey, setting us back 10 years.

Be careful what you wish for.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

NOT necessarily, but you make good points, Steve. INDEED, that could have changed a LOT… and not necessarily for the better.

        GOOD POST!

SERIOUSLY, your post here is GOOD, man! Point well taken!

Speaking of busts or bad picks…

Parker. I am very down on that pick as you know, but I’m coming to grips with it. I look at the other WRs taken in the 1st that year and they are all about the same. So…guess it is what it is.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Most of them are worse.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yeah, man look at Kevin White. UGLY!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m not blaming it in the OL, because it’s all on Parker. However when a team has better blocking up front its beneficial to the outside receivers and maybe detrimental to a Landry, so let’s hope better line play benefits him.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

For Parker it’s avoiding those nagging leg injuries. When he’s good to go he’s usually productive. He can blow games open with his ability.

We have no real kitchen. Fryer, microwave, and an induction burner. We are an AUCE floating boat sushi experience. You come sit, grab off boats that go by and order special/custom rolls off menu from chefs that are in middle and they make right there. We have extras like crab rangoons, green bean fries, cheesecake rangoons, etc… Plus now have a bar nextdoor but all connected. In the bar we have table service if so desired, but not AUCE.

Its $20 for the boats…wife wanted place that was fun, casual, and affordable for people like her.

ER — that sounds awesome. Not sure if you remember, but was a server at a Japanese place many moons ago. Didn’t have them then, but have seen the conveyor belt places….. look cool as anything. 90. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

ER – I can promise you right now, if I ever make my way to Wisconsin, I’ll drop by for some sushi. Is this only a seasonal place? I know that sounds like a dumb question, but I can’t see trying to grab food off a boat in minus 30 degree weather. lol

Thanks for the look. 2 things we dont have. White tuna and yellowtail. Yellowtail we haven’t found it in the quality we want. White tuna we will never have. It isn’t tuna, it’s actually the fish they used for all that O’Lean stuff years ago. Wife refuses to eat or serve it.

Oh and no octopus. We had long ago but not enough demand.

I just served the fish stuff…. so what do I know. But guy who runs it is real smart (place been running since the 80s) and did he like us to upsell. You ask for a Cal roll and the Q was “how would you like that with real crab?” And if we had Toro in it was a once in a while rare chance at a hefty price….. even if yeah we had it most times.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Lol. We only try to sell the hot appetizers….

We couldn’t do $20 with real crab. LOL. We just have highest quality tuna and salmon….wife will close before downgrading quality of fish.
