Oh yeah!!! This is the unit that has me excited, because we haven’t had good play at MLB in a while, and this year, Raekwon McMillan is back and ready to be the tackling machine we have missed. I’m not going to count T.J. McDonald, or Minkah Fitzpatrick, or Reshad Jones in this article, but we know they all will be rotating in on passing downs and basically playing nickel LB, whether they officially call it that or not. These 2 things, Raekwon being there to stop run plays, and the combination of the safeties and LB Jerome Baker in coverage make me feel much more confident about our defense going forward. The need for Kiko Alonso to be the guy in coverage is now over, and the Dolphins will be in better hands for it. We’ve seen enough of him unsuccessfully chasing players catching footballs and being a good 5 yards behind them.
We currently have 10 LB’s on the roster, but once we get down to the serious cuts, we’ll probably have only six remaining. Let’s look at what we have, and who I think sticks, and who I think doesn’t.
Kiko Alonso – LB 6’3 239 28YO
Alonso has been a steady performer the Dolphins. He played and started in 15 games in 2016, and all 16 games in 2017. Although he struggles in coverage, he’s been a good player for us. Last year Alonso finished with 115 total tackles (79 solo), along with 2 sacks and 2 FF’s. Kiko will be playing mostly on the weak side which I think is exactly where he belongs. In 2016, he had the huge INT and TD return for 60 yards. I think he’s a little under appreciated here, but he’s been a solid, dependable player.
____________________________________________________
Raekwon McMillan – LB 6’2 248 22YO
Raekwon was injured in the season opener covering the first punt of the year as he collided with teammate Deon Lacey. He tore his ACL, but he is now fully recovered and ready to take the reins of this defense as the defensive signal caller, the MLB. The big 250 LB ran a 4.6 40 at the combine, and he had a very nice career at Ohio St. I think McMillan will be the difference maker in this LB corps. Last year Chase Allen and Mike Hull filled in some, and while Allen flashed some, I don’t think he made the impact that McMillan will for us this season. He’s already shown he’s ready as even early in practices in OTA’s, McMillan was adjusting the defense and putting players in the appropriate position.
____________________________________________________
Stephone Anthony – LB 6’3 245 26YO
The SLB is less set in stone than the WLB and MLB spots are. At the moment, Stephone Anthony is manning the SLB spot, but he may face some competition from rookie Jerome Baker, and possibly even Chase Allen. The former 1st RD pick (#31) of the New Orleans Saints started out as a MLB, but the Saints coaches felt the strain of the mental aspects of the game lessened his play, so they tried to work him at OLB, but after a promising rookie season, his play fell off and then so did his playing time, which made him expendable for a 5th RD pick last season. He will be given every chance to win the job, but he’s going to have to show a little something, because the 5th we spent on acquiring pales when compared to the 3rd we spent on Jerome Baker. This may be the last chance for Anthony to be a starter.
____________________________________________________
Terrence Garvin – LB 6’3 242 27YO
Garvin is basically a ST’s standout. He can also provide depth, but Garvin’s meal ticket is his special teams prowess. Garvin has played for the 3 NFL teams, and at each stop, he’s been the ST’s ace. Garvin was signed in 2013 by the Pittsburgh Steelers as an UDFA. He played 3 seasons for the Steelers, and then was picked up by the Redskins in 2016. Last season he played for the Seattle Seahawks. Garvin has started only 4 games in his 5 year career.
___________________________________________________
Mike Hull – LB 6’0 235 27YO
Hull was signed as an UDFA here in MIA in 2015. Hull appeared in only 3 games as a rookie in 2015, but played in all 16 games in both ’16 and ’17, with 4 starts. Hull plays special teams, so he that’s where his value is, plus he can play MLB in a pinch, but just don’t expect a lot. He will continue to be a special teams player and a backup if he makes the cut.
__________________________________________________
Jerome Baker – LB 6’1 229 21YO
Baker was our 3rd RD pick (#73) in the 2018 NFL Draft. Baker now gives us 2 LB’s drafted from Ohio State (Raekwon McMillan). His strengths are Kiko Alonso’s weakness, but Kiko’s strength is Jerome Baker’s weakness. Kiko is tough playing the run, while Baker struggles to beat and shed blocks in the run game, and gets wiped out too often. Baker’s strength is pass coverage, where he is a bit above average in that regard, and that’s Kiko’s weak point, he doesn’t cover well. A combo of these 2 players would be ideal, but Baker could eventually replace Kiko on the weak side, or he can also displace Stephone Anthony on the strong side. In order to do either of the two, Baker is going to have show more toughness beating blocks and making tough tackles, and continue to show development as a coverage LB. It’s likely Baker is more of a depth player and ST’s player his rookie year, but a strong showing in TC and preseason games could change that quickly. He also will likely get to play some nickel or dime LB if he proves competent in the preseason
_________________________________________________
Chase Allen – LB 6’3 250 25YO
Allen was signed in 2017 as an UDFA. Allen appeared in all 16 games, and was forced to start 4 games due to injuries (McMillan) and cuts (Maualuga). Allen definitely flashed some ability finishing with 33 total tackles (24 solo) along with a FF. He will continue to be a ST’s player, and can provide adequate depth at any of the LB positions.
_________________________________________________
Quentin Poling – LB 6’1 235 24YO
Poling was Miami’s 7th RD pick in the 2018 NFL draft (#227). He is another athletic player, somewhat in the mold of Jerome Baker, but Poling played at Ohio, not Ohio State. He’s a decent cover LB, and likes to chase and tackle. At Ohio, Poling made 43.5 tackles behind the LOS, in addition to 18 sacks, and 7 INT’s. He will have to continue to make those type of plays in the preseason to make the cut. The best chance for Poling to make it would be if the Dolphins don’t see enough from Stephone Anthony, which is a possibility. Right now I’d give him an outside shot, but if Hull or Anthony or Allen are cut, that could give Poling the in.
________________________________________________
Frank Ginda – LB 6’0 245 21YO
Frank Ginda was signed a week ago as an UDFA. he was signed right after LB Mike McCray unexpectedly decided to retire from the NFL. Ginda was a fine player at San Jose St. Last season, Ginda finished with 173 total tackles (94 solo) which led the NCAA in tackles. He shows good instincts, and always flows to the ball. He needs to work on shedding tackles, but Ginda is a player. He’s somewhat of a longshot, but if he can show the same type of play he had at San Jose St, he might be a surprise roster invitee.
________________________________________________
So that’s the LB’s, and again, I’m pretty enthusiastic about this group. I can’t wait to see Raekwon manning the middle, and I’m encouraged that if Stephone Anthony doesn’t step up his game, the Dolphins have at least 2-3 guys that can replace him and give us something.

Stanger you can move us to probable from possible on the Fest card.
An upgrade. Nice
LOL … hoping family things allow me the privilege
Players lose their game at all ages. It depends on circumstances. If your leg or whatever isn’t right you no longer have that edge. Football is a tough sport and the NFL is the highest level. This game takes down a lot of dudes.

OUCH!!!
_______
Ouch is right, and this Mets organization needs to be bitchslapped. If they believe they can carry on as is, making minimal changes and adding low to mid level major league talent and be competitive, they will find out they are dead wrong. My only hope is that in the offseason, they make some trades and get back some serious young talent, once they have their GM in place, because I don’t give a damn about the 2 year window they see as opportunity to win, I see it as foolish. What would compound the foolishness is not signing deGrom or Wheeler to long term deals (4 or 5 year contracts), or not trading them, and then having both walk w/o any compensation. That’s my greatest fear with this organization.
I wouldn’t worry the future looks great for the Mets……They have Tim Tebow!
Hmmm, Some thing is wrong with my computer. I keep hitting refresh on the Dolphins blog but it is a Met’s blog instead. I am going to try rebooting, maybe that will fix the MAJOR ISSUE.
Don’tcha hate when that happens!

look at their competition, the raiders just got gruden and i’m not sure he will come out of the gates winning, Denver has been struggling the last couple of years, their only real threat is KC who lost smith and now has a new inexperienced QB, So it may be a SD year to win the division.

Those “projected” contracts are absurdly low. If James plays really well this season, he could be looking at close to double what the author projected.

YOUNG STANGER: Chris Archer has been the best pitcher on the Rays for the last few years. But this year he’s been fighting injuries and inconsistency – – and, clearly, has not been a dominant force in the AL East. Since the Rays have no chance to catch either the Red Sox or the Yankees, cheapskate owner Stu Sternberg is in an “unloading salaries

Rob – Broken bone in wrist Tebow? That Tebow?
Yes that Tebow…the one that made the minor league all stars….the one batting .300 + since june….it may be questionable if he can hit major league pitching but most of the current mets can’t hit anyway.

I thought San Diego might have a chance to be pretty good but with the recent injuries I’m not so sure anymore. I’d still expect them to win 8-10 games.

Being labeled a slot receiver means you play there most of the time and likely aren’t effective enough on the outside. Gase is saying Wilson is a WR. When he says hes not a slot he doesn’t mean hes not going to never play the slot.
Mando is looking like more of an ass every time he mentions Wilson isn’t a slot receiver. He acts like the joke is on Gase, when it’s actually on him.

They were talking about this on Fox Sports Radio this morning. The question was which player was going to slide this year based on age. Brady was the first player mentioned. Wouldn’t that be nice?
They said when it hits it will be in the legs and he won’t be able to slide around the pocket like he once did, then the hits will start coming and he’ll be looking at the lineman coming at him instead of downfield, then it’s all downhill😀

not that “you heard it here first,” but i thought Lady-boy looked really old against us last year — (no spring in his step, as you say) and also on that missed pass reception in the SB (same thing, his mind said “jump,” but his legs said “wrong decade”)
The loss of Patricia i think is also underrated. BB is now an old guy, and old guys don’t have as much energy, even though they think they do. He’s not the same man that used to be his own DC for several years.
If Sony Michel can fulfill his enormous potential, he will take some of the pressure off both tommy* and that defense, but that is a huge burden to put on a rookie RB, esp with no deep threat at WR.
What if he misses a block (like all rookie RBs do) and Gisele has to watch her husband get nailed?
Michel has had issues fumbling in camp, that’s not going to get him on the field.

The end result of deflategate that no one has mentioned. Because Brady was suspended for the first 4 games it gave Garo pollo a chance to show the rest of the NFL what he can do. The cheats could no longer hide him on the sidelines, waiting for Brady to retire. They either had to pay him or trade him and fortunately they traded him.
Without deflategate he’d likely still be on the cheats.

His college highlight reel was pretty exciting….but I guess that’s what HIGHLIGHTS are.
He struggled initially in college, so we know he’s a slow learner, and he may still be a good pro, but how long can we wait?
He knows what to do, he just needs some dog in him.
hmmmm, he didn’t play his freshman year, scored 9 TD’s his sophomore year and 10 his Junior and senior years respectively. I didn’t know he struggled.
I read about it after we drafted him. You cant just take some stats and determine what kind of career he had in college.

As good as our secondary has been looking so far, even if you just count Howard, then add in Minkah, and note the fact that NE doesn’t have much in receivers, other than Gronk, we might just beat them in NE week 4. “Seems as if Cordrea Tankersley has pulled slightly ahead of Tony Lippett in starting CB battle. It’s early yet.”
Way to answer your own point Mando. LOL
Yeah, he’s pulling ahead, because today he’s starting.
Juwaun James out today, Gase must be sending him a message. Oh he’s hurt.
The sky may be falling in NE this fall😀
In trading up for WR LC3 (Leonte Carroo), we passed on future Pro-Bowl WRs Pharoh Cooper (4th round) and Tyreek Hill (5th round). Additionally, we passed on future Pro-Bowlers OLB Joe Schobert (man crush of mine, 4th round), QB Dak Prescott (man crush of mine, 4th round), and RB Jordan Howard (5th round).
I REALLY hope that Carroo finds his niche with us… and FAST. We can’t afford to miss on players we trade up for; the cost is too great and it sets the franchise back.
The worst part about it (IMO)? We had no business drafting a WR so early in ’16… let alone trading up for one. And NO, we can’t play the hindsight card: we had no idea back then that we’d eventually part ways with Jarvis.
You can play this game with every team.
While I can’t disagree with that, you can’t take away from the GMs who landed these young bucks who’ve already made the Pro-Bowl.
#ForesightVsHindsight
Also after Landry, Stills and Parker, who was the depth at WR heading into 2016? Just because Carroo hasn’t panned out, doesn’t mean the team had no business drafting a WR. The way Gase wants to run his offense, he needs fresh legs and depth at WR.
You go through the draft and see someone falling, based on your board, you make a trade that has good value in it. What more can you ask for?
You cant be timid and not take risks, if draftees dont work out you have to go back and look at the evaluation process.
Just because some of these players taken after Carroo made it, doesn’t mean they would’ve had the same success for us.
Just had an electrician come to give me an estimate for some outdoor lighting, and we go down to the basement to check out the electrical panel, and he sees all the Dolphins stuff, and says “You ready for football season?” “I see you’re a Dolphins fan”. I say hell yeah, can’t wait, how bout you, what’s your team? He says, “I didn’t want to say anything, I’m a Patriots fan” lol
Is he still alive? LOL
Yeah, he was a lot bigger than me. lol
He was a cool guy though. I asked if he ever gets bored with winning, like does he ever just get disinterested because he knows they’re going to win the division every year.
Tim – I had no problem with the Dolphins drafting a WR, I just hate that they gave up 3 picks for the wrong one.
It’s done it hasn’t panned out. When you make a trade like that and it doesn’t work it’s always easy to criticize because it wasn’t worth it.
I dont get it either.
No one on here liked that pick, but it is what it is.
I hate giving up draft capital, but you really go into a draft looking for 3 or 4 guys that will start or be close to a starter, and if you get that you call the draft a success and move on. I believe we accomplished that the year we drafted Carroo.
I know, I get that. I just wish he at least showed a lil something at some point.
Correction to a Carroo post I made above, he was drafted as an insurance policy to losing Stills, not Landry.
The greater point I’m trying to make: Carroo (at least thus far) has NOT panned out for us, after investing major Draft capital in him. And that it took 3 picks to land him in the third round, we could have used those picks to select others (Dak, for instance).
It was a big swing and miss, that’s all there is to it. They thought they got the right guy, they whiffed.
EXACTLY. These kinds of whiffs set the franchise back.
The point Tim and I are trying to make is why go there? Why dont we also talk about missing out on Brady 5 times, or any other player drafted after the 1st round that became a star? What’s the point? We know guys every year drafted later make an impact.
We did land Grant in the 6th the same year so it sometimes balances out. I expect to see Grant more involved in the offense this year.
I knew I missed someone from that class.
Didn’t we draft Tunsil, HOWARD, Drake the year we drafted Carroo? Looks pretty good to me.
That’s not the point, but yes… it was a good Draft overall.
I saw your point, but that goes without saying, like Tim mentioned you could do that with every team. We all know the pick hasn’t worked, no sense in beating a dead horse.
I agree 100% Zach is a HOF LB for sure
+100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
I agree, but it doesn’t work that way, you dont just take stats and say this guy should be in.
He absolutely should be in, and I believe will soon.
Yes on the HOF for Zach.
Steve – You’re a major stat hater! 🙂
No I’m not, I love stats, but you cant make an opinion based off of them. I know you’re JBB, but wanted to clarify things, because I can see why you’d say that.
I also wish Carroo would break out but something always seems to keep that from happening. His own performance and I believe he had minor offseason surgery that set him back this offseason. Yet until Isaiah Ford recently banged up his shoulder, he was supposedly having a good camp thus far. Things have a way of balancing out. The Carroo trade didn’t set this franchise back in any way. Sure maybe we missed on some other players, but like Steve and I have been saying, you can do this with every team in any round. You just have to hit more than you miss.

I hear both Tim and you, Bro!
Perhaps I’m just nitpicking, but I strive for being the very best we can be. Mishaps like LC3 (just as Dion Jordan and DT3) will occur, but I could see us being even BETTER than our great 2016 Draft class.

Pretty much. Her Gma is from Japan and she grew up eating it. She managed restaurants and got tired of working 80hr weeks for someone else. The place we are in was available and she talked me into it. LOL
That’s cool stuff! If I owned a restaurant, I’d weigh 1000 lbs. lol
So Mike what did the Pats fan say when you asked him if winning so much becomes boring?
He said he likes to concentrate on player development, and he’s also fascinated how many really good players Belichick lets go, and how easily he replaces them. I get that, we’re all fascinated by it too.
LOL
Winning so much? We dont win too often, we lose too often, should’ve won LII, and the the 2 against the Gmen, and every game we’ve played since #12 was drafted.

Dolphins need to draft a QB this year.
————
So I see a comment like this and wonder… what if we didn’t trade 3 picks for Leonte Carroo? What if we’d drafted Dak Prescott in ’16 (as I suggested), instead?
There was NOBODY higher on Dak Prescott than ME, on ANY Dolphins board… I can guarantee y’all that.
Then he would’ve played last year for us, we would’ve made the playoffs, cut Ryan this year and in 2018 our record would be 6-10 with an over priced Landry, Suh and Pouncey, setting us back 10 years.
Be careful what you wish for.
NOT necessarily, but you make good points, Steve. INDEED, that could have changed a LOT… and not necessarily for the better.
GOOD POST!
SERIOUSLY, your post here is GOOD, man! Point well taken!
You bring up good points too, even though I try not to look at things that way.
I had a job interview back in 1992 , but didn’t get the job, affirmative action, if I had I would’ve retired last year. But i wouldn’t be in the current situation and my son would never have been born, so how can i complain about not being retired?
You gonna do this all day? LOL
LOL
As long as we know where hes coming from…his statement was just that and really not open for rebuttal, but it’s what we do here.
Can I get a hallelujah!!!!?
Amen! I mean Hallelujah!
😉
Great movie!!!
Yeah Mike E its been an experience. I quit my job of 24 years last year to be full time at the place. Scary…
But I just think of all the money we save with her not going out for it all the time. 🙂
Are you there full time? Do you cook? Is it only raw fish, or sushi and Japanese food and hibachi?
Sometimes being in hell is the drive needed to do something, instead of saying look what he overcame.
Maybe he was just trying to survive.
Speaking of busts or bad picks…
Parker. I am very down on that pick as you know, but I’m coming to grips with it. I look at the other WRs taken in the 1st that year and they are all about the same. So…guess it is what it is.
Most of them are worse.
Yeah, man look at Kevin White. UGLY!
I’m not blaming it in the OL, because it’s all on Parker. However when a team has better blocking up front its beneficial to the outside receivers and maybe detrimental to a Landry, so let’s hope better line play benefits him.
For Parker it’s avoiding those nagging leg injuries. When he’s good to go he’s usually productive. He can blow games open with his ability.
GOOD stuff in here, addressing my wondering of one Johnathan Hankins. Barry ROCKS!
Good stuff! I like the speed package with Wake and Quinn at the ends and Hayes and Harris inside. They did some of that last year with Harris which is another way to get him more snaps. Go get that QB!!!! 🙂

AMEN, my Brother! I HEAR you!
My wife LOVES sushi. I thought I was a kick-ass husband because once a month I take her out to sushi…then ER comes along and changes the game.
I’m THAT guy. LOL
I just need to make sure my wife never reads this board. I don’t want her getting any ideas, lol. 🙂
We’ll come help open it! No worries. 🙂
Mike E
We have no real kitchen. Fryer, microwave, and an induction burner. We are an AUCE floating boat sushi experience. You come sit, grab off boats that go by and order special/custom rolls off menu from chefs that are in middle and they make right there. We have extras like crab rangoons, green bean fries, cheesecake rangoons, etc… Plus now have a bar nextdoor but all connected. In the bar we have table service if so desired, but not AUCE.
Its $20 for the boats…wife wanted place that was fun, casual, and affordable for people like her.
Nice!
ER — that sounds awesome. Not sure if you remember, but was a server at a Japanese place many moons ago. Didn’t have them then, but have seen the conveyor belt places….. look cool as anything. And that $20 price is awesome. That is what my old place charges for the small sushi platter (one roll and 7 pieces with no substitutions)….. but how much more fun is your set up?
Our most expensive roll for takeout/dine in/delivery is $13 and its loaded. Most are under 10… But I figure location has a lot to do with pricing as well.
Our place is fun. It’s a great place to even come alone as everyone sits around the boats. Great way to try new things.
Do you mean great way to try new people? LOL
Whatever floats your boat. 🙂
ER — you’ve probably looked at too many Japanese menus, but here is the one from my old place on the off chance it offers an idea. Sushi stuff is at the bottom.

ER – That sounds fantastic, and FUN! Good for you man, and even better for your wife! 😉
LOL. Yep.
It is a great place! It was fun just grabbing food off of boats and eating. I ordered on roll off the menu that said, “this is effing hot” in the description. It was, and it was really good.
I still wont try it. LOL
Mike,
What email address can I get in touch with you at?
nj1dolfan@yahoo.com
Thanks, sent you an email.
ER – I can promise you right now, if I ever make my way to Wisconsin, I’ll drop by for some sushi. Is this only a seasonal place? I know that sounds like a dumb question, but I can’t see trying to grab food off a boat in minus 30 degree weather. lol
We have heat. LOL
Winter is our busiest time actually.
ER – I totally didn’t get the “boat” concept. I thought maybe you were on a bay and I was picturing boats in the water. I’ve never seen a sushi boat before, but now I get it. I figured I had to have been missing something. lol
Mike, you have to wear a captain’s hat though. LOL
Stanger
Thanks for the look. 2 things we dont have. White tuna and yellowtail. Yellowtail we haven’t found it in the quality we want. White tuna we will never have. It isn’t tuna, it’s actually the fish they used for all that O’Lean stuff years ago. Wife refuses to eat or serve it.
Oh and no octopus. We had long ago but not enough demand.
Unagi?
That’s freshwater eel. We have it.
I just served the fish stuff…. so what do I know. But guy who runs it is real smart (place been running since the 80s) and did he like us to upsell. You ask for a Cal roll and the Q was “how would you like that with real crab?” And if we had Toro in it was a once in a while rare chance at a hefty price….. even if yeah we had it most times.
Lol. We only try to sell the hot appetizers….
We couldn’t do $20 with real crab. LOL. We just have highest quality tuna and salmon….wife will close before downgrading quality of fish.
Now I really want a boat of sushi!
LOL Tim – I’m in!
I’d wear one to eat good sushi. 🙂
has training camp always been so short? Just a couple of weeks before preseason?
No CBA rules cut it quite a bit. There used to be 3-a-days, then 2-a-days now very little contact practices which is why O-lines start off slow.
There also used to be 6 PS games which was absurd.
Scrimmage at the stadium this Saturday
Eel is my favorite. I’ve never like rolls really. I don’t like cold sticky rice. I have no problem with raw fish or any of the other ingredients, I just don’t like cold rice. LOL
So you prefer Sashimi?
yes
I like the rice but I can eat both. Wasabi and soy is the key anyway.
I wanted to try the eel because it looked good but when I took a bite and got a whiff I almost threw up on the person across from me. LOL
My favorite sushi is tuna, then salmon, then yellowtail and I also like tuna rolls. That’s what I go with.
I like tuna rolls too. I’ve a bunch of other ones that are good, like California rolls, Lobster rolls, Spider rolls, Shrimp rolls, I think I’ve had eel in a roll too, not positive. No hurling. lol
Mike, the Bubba Hump of rolls 😋
GUMP dammit
LOL, we’ve turned into a food blog! 🙂
I’m not a big fan of sushi, but I do love calamari.
ER, do you serve calamari?
Love calamari, especially the tentacles.
