Bubble Game – Preseason Game IV

The preseason finale game won’t mean anything to the starters, but it will mean everything to so many players desperately wanting to show enough to secure a roster spot.  The Dolphins at this moment have 90 players on the roster and they must cut that down to 53 by Saturday.  Think about that, 37 players will be removed from the roster.  There are a couple that may end up on the 8 game IR, and still others will eligible to be placed on the practice squad.  For all the others, this is at least temporarily, the end of their quest to be on an NFL roster.  Some will get picked up by other teams quickly, and others may get picked up when a need arises.

Another factor involved in the cut downs is the strategy by the FO and coaches as to how many players they want to carry at certain positions.  I’ll start on offense with the QB’s.  Historically, we have carried only 2 QB’s, and I expect that to continue.  I think David Fales will get the #2 spot, and Brock Osweiler will be cut.   At WR, it depends on whether we carry 5 or 6WR’s, but last year it was 5.  If we stretch it to 6, then it’s between Leonte Carroo, Francis Owusu, Rashawn Scott and Malcolm Lewis.  When we drafted LC3, and tried to look at the bright side, I hoped maybe he would be like Anquan Boldin lite and maybe push Parker for a starting job.  Now, LCIII is on the cusp of getting removed from the roster, and it’s real.  My hope is if we do carry 6, Owusu gets the nod.

The RB’s will most likely be 4, and I expect those to be Frank Gore, Kenyan Drake, Kalen Ballage and Senorise Perry.  I know Langford has history with Gase, but Perry plays ST’s as a KR and he has shown some ability to make some tough runs, so he gets the edge.

At TE, the obvious 2 are the recent draft picks Mike Gesicki and Durham Smythe, and I personally like Gray for his ability to block both in line and also as an H-back/FB, and I believe they like Derby’s potential, so that makes 4 TE’s.

On the O-line, the injury to Ted Larsen will probably open a roster spot, unless he’ll be OK for the opener.  We know it’s probably not serious, but still may keep him out for a weeks.  Guys that were on the bubble like C Mike Matthews and OG Connor Hilland may get a shot if Larsen will be out for a while.  Asiata definitely just moved up and should make the roster.

On the D-line, there will definitely be some tough cuts.  With the trade that brought us Robert Quinn, and the draft pick of Charles Harris last season, we have a lot of DE’s, but at least one of them (William Hayes) can slide inside in rush packages, which gives us more flexibility, and may bump a potential DT off the roster.  We know Quinn, Wake, Phillips, Godchaux, Spence, Hayes, Branch,  and Taylor are in, that’s 8, which leaves maybe 2 more spots for any combo of Malveaux, Langford, Pittman and Woodard.  Tough cuts indeed!

In the secondary, it won’t be easy either, and ST’s may play a big part as to who gets to stay.  X and Good Ole Bobby are IN, Reshad Jones, T.J. McDonald, Minkah Fitzpatrick IN, and then I’d have to think Maurice Smith and probably Cordrea Tankersley and Torry McTyer, but Tony Lippett’s health may put him on the IR (8 game), and Walt Aikens and Jordan Lucas are both excellent ST’s players, so that’s maybe one or 2 more roster spots for guys like Cornell Armstrong, Jalen Davis and Tavese Calhoun.

At LB, it’s a little muddled, with Stephone Anthony not really showing up, he could be in danger of getting cut.  We know Kiko Alonso, Raekwon McMillan and Jerome Baker are starters, but Mike Hull’s availability, or lack thereof may open up an opportunity for someone else.  Garvin is a solid vet who is a ST’s ace, so he’s in, Chase Allen was a former starter for us due to injuries, and he showed well enough, but the injury to Hull could possibly open the door for either Frank Ginda or Quentin Poling.

The final battle is ST’s, where kickers Jason Sanders and Greg Joseph have squared off all during TC and the preseason.  I think Sanders is in, and then we have P Matt Haack, LS God John Denney.

So that’s what I think about the roster, and Preseason Game IV is tomorrow against the Falcons in Atlanta at 7PM, the game will be replayed on NFL Network on Saturday morning at 6AM.

So with THAT stated, I suppose I’m looking at Logan Woodside… should he be cut by the Bengals. Because OBVIOUSLY, neither of Brock Osweiler and David Fales are P/S eligible.

CAN’T SEE the game tonight but I hear ex-FAU back up player Buddy Howell is having a good evening so far. If either Howell or Joseph make the team, a little FAU flavor finally will be added to this mix. As of right now, NO FAU player or FIU player has ever played for the Dolphins.
    ———————–

SPEAKING OF FAU, my old alma mater takes on mighty Oklahoma right in their own back yard in Norman, Oklahoma in just over 40 hours from now. The reality is that the Sooners are favored by 21 (down from the opening spread of 24 points). Less than 1 per cent of teams who are 21 or more point underdogs end up winning Division I NCAA football games, so I’m NOT expecting a miracle. What I WOULD LIKE is an effort similar to FAU’s performance against heavily favored Wisconsin in Madison last season. The Owls were in the game most of the way before fading to a 31-14 defeat to a Badger team that went 12-1 last year (including a blowout win over Miami in the Orange Bowl game).

FAU’s two top players are Heisman Trophy candidate Devin “Motor” Singletary, who scored a mind-boggling 32 touchdowns last season from the running back position and Middle Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, a terror 230 pounder and the unquestioned leader of this football team’s defense. He WILL play on Sunday next season, as will defensive backs Jalen Young and Shelton Lewis, who were both named to the C-USA first team all-conference team after last season.

The biggest question is at QB, where Chris Robison (a transfer from Oklahoma) and De’Andre Johnson are battling for the top spot. Speedsters Willie Wright and Jovon Durante will test the Sooner’s secondary, as will under rated TE Harrison Bryant, an inviting 6’5″ target who I predict will make some big catches this season.

Three of FAU’s starting five O-Linemen graduated (two are currently in medical school). The three replacements will, in my view, be quite solid by year’s end. But who knows if they’ll be ready right now for Oklahoma’s defensive strength and speed?? And therein lies Lane Kiffin’s biggest challenge: getting this FAU offense rolling early. Last season the Owls AVERAGED nearly 41 points per game and 498 yards total offense per game. Logic says they can’t possibly match those numbers in game one.

Kiffin brought in a new Offensive Coordinator, Charlie Weiss, Jr., the 24 year old son of former Notre Dame and NFL coach Charlie Weiss, Sr., to guide this up tempo offense. Many snickered at this selection. But, maybe, Lane Kiffin will have the last laugh. I sure hope so.

MY PREDICTION: Oklahoma-44, FAU-30. The Owls cover the spread, and maybe, a bit more!!

I want every game this year to open like this game did. 7 for us and three and out for them.

Ballage looks like a nice back. Running and catching.
Defense swarms he ball. I like.
    no presnap penalties
our backups want to make the team more than their backups. (or are just better, which makes me feel better about depth.)
21 points in the first quarter!? I wish that could carry over.

      I KNOW!

To be perfectly honest, I did ONE mock draft, where I desperately took Benkert in the 4th round… and even then I had a bad feeling.

Methinks Prof Lou is likely having the worst week of his life, in terms of football… he can’t even hit the water after falling out of his boat. And beyond that, he’s one very messed up individual. He told me that he’s NEVER coming back to this site… and about a month later, he blocked me (for the 2nd time!) on Twitter.

  32. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Not so bold prediction. We will see some of these dolphin players on teams playing against us this season.

  33. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Rockphin, would you then at least ‘consider’ RG3 to be our backup QB… IF he gets cut?

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

yeah, I think he would be a good choice if the coaches gave it the nod. He seems to me to be pretty equal to Tanny physically so we wouldn’t have to change our play calling all that much. BUT I would have to carry 3 on the roster at first because he doesn’t know the plays. So I don’t think it will happen. As Gase said. The backup is on the team already.

  34. D's avatar D says:

Osweiler is going to give you starter quality but inconsistently, Fales is going to give you mediocre backup level play but on a more consistent basis. Technically it’s better to have consistently average play than off and on starter quality in a backup. Not really sure who they should keep or if they just need to move on from both of them. There are a couple of QB cuts upcoming that would likely make me choose that person over either of those guys

  35. Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

When i lived in PC we almost only got Dolphins games, even though TB was technically closer, and once the Jags came in, it was still Miami. I really miss that.

I have to do Sunday ticket if i want to see all or even most of the Phins games now because the local teams here are Saints and Falcons. I might get lucky and get 2-3 of the Phins games as a local broadcast a year here.

  67. D's avatar D says:

I wish they would expand NFL rosters to 60 players. They can keep the number of active players the same if they want to for games, but it would be really nice to have 60 players protected by contract (ie unable to be poached like the ones on the PS can) to provide more protection against on players getting hurt making you shake up your whole roster.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Yeah, with injuries seemingly more frequent these days, I’m not sure why rosters aren’t bigger.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But that is what the waiver wire and the PS system are about. You increase the roster and you will only be helping the better teams stash players.

      • D's avatar D says:

Salary cap keeps things honest.. I dont see it being more exploitable for one team vs another.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But rooks come on the real cheap. A team like the Pats would keep and develop players that at some point could start for other teams. Just ask a few of their past QBs like Jimmy G.

  68. D's avatar D says:

Cutting Joseph was a classy move. He likely gets a shot with another team and now people can grab him up before the market gets saturated. Rizzi trying to help him out basically making sure the cut was known to be that kind of cut and not one where the dude was so bad we cut him immediately.

    —————-
    NFC: Rams, Vikings, and Eagles
AFC: Patsies* (barf!), Stealers*, and Bengals

I dunno… just off the top of me head. ALL of these teams are very strong.

    • D's avatar D says:

My feeling is most likely 2 in the NFC will be the Rams and Eagles. Most likely in the AFC, im going with Jags and Pats. I think the comp level for the Steelers is higher than Pats and Jags who should pretty much have their divisions sewn up. I think we take one from the Pats, but i dont see the Bills or Jets beating them at all. Thats 5 wins they have sewn up right there and the rest of their schedule is not very difficult.

Nothing to do with our Fins but was looking at old NFL highlights. Man, I just loved watching this guy run. He was just flat out exciting to watch. You know when a WR goes up for a ball and takes it away from the defender they say “You got Mossed!”. Well, when someone gets juked out of their shows they should say “You got Sandered!”

I’m speaking more to him ending up with the Patsies*, stej, or Bills, Bro!
    _______________________________________________________

I dont think the Bills or the pats have the future cap space to take on Mack…The Jets do but the asking price is way too high…two 1st rnders…? when he’s an UFA in March! ….no way.

tops for a trade is a 2nd rnder being that any team that trades for him would have to resign him immediately to a huge deal,
The Browns could pull that off

D, no, we only get Dolphins games when they are nationally televised. Most of our network stations are in Mobile, AL. ABC is the only network channel was have locally in Pensacola. My boss gets the Sunday ticket for me at work so I get to watch most of our games.

Son, UCF looked good last night. I have to give a shout out to our Pensacola team. University of West Florida is ranked #2 in Div II and beat 22nd ranked Carson Newman last night after losing their starting QB 3 plays into the game.

Never mind the 60 man roster, how about allowing all 53 on the roster to be dressed and eligible to play on Game Day rather than just the 46. WTF is that?

Worked at the team sports area of a summer camp when was younger. If we had been out drinking late… every period was team dodge ball. Get hit and you went to the side in the shade. Wonder if the kids ever figured out why we were so easy to hit those days.

More cuts to add to my list above.
TE Nick Keizer RB Jarveon Williams RB Terry Swanson, OT Jaryd Jones-Smith, WR Quan Bray, WR Jester Weah, RB Lavon Coleman, WR Braxton Miller, OT David Quessenberry DE Carroll Phillips CB Demontre Hurst WR Jordan Leslie QB Christian Hackenberg DB Ron Parker CB Christian Campbell, TE Alec Bloom

Carroll Phillips was another one of Lou’s guys

Braxton Miller getting cut is kind of suprising. The Houston people have to be a little shocked by it as i think they were planning on him being a lock at WR for them.

  83. D's avatar D says:

So far if i had of players im at least a little bit interested in it would be Charles Sims. If we didnt have such depth at WR i might be interested in Braxton Miller (even though he is a real douche as a person) because there is some athletic upside to him. He has versatility and could be a potential emergency QB backup and could line up both as a 3rd down back and a slot receiver. I think though even some of the guys w will be cutting are better pure receivers than him though. I might would rather have Antonio Garcia over one of our bubble guys too, like Sterup, but im not even sure he will make our team.

They aren’t trying to shop him around “first”. They are keeping him, hoping that as time goes on, there will become a NEED for another team to acquire his services. WISE move by the Cardinals.

I know a lot here liked Breshad Perriman the year he came out. Sounds like he might get cut. Would any of you like to take a flyer on him or are you good with Ford as the 6th WR?

  92. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The QB coach (or otherwise) that can get Mike Glennon to quicken his release time, will reap major benefits. Can it be done? I dunno, but it’s certainly feasible on paper.

I’d seen SO MUCH Mike Glennon in my scouting of #1 (DAVID AMERSON). The kid has an arm and it should translate to success… again, on paper. Hence, some of the $$$ he’s made while being a relatively docile QB in the NFL.

I cannot vouch for what Glennon has from above the neck… again, I was more focused on AMERSON. But, Glennon has one helluva an arm. He is a ‘QB whisperer’s’ dream.

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah his problems is from the neck up and i dont think he has a ton of confidence in himself or making the close throws.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I tend to agree with ya, D… but I assume as much without really having followed him after his NC State days.

All I know is that Glennon has a wind-up like a Japanese pitcher (NOT being racist).

LB Kevin Minter got cut from the Jets. Is he still interesting for us?

    • D's avatar D says:

I use to really want the guy for us, but i dont really think he has progressed much. He might be better depth than a couple of our depth guys, but i dont see him starting for us.
