2018 Season – Game 1 -Titans @ Dolphins

The day we’ve waited so long to arrive will be here in 3 more days. Yeah, there’s a game on tonight, and may even be a good one, but I’m looking right past it to Sunday, 1PM, Hard Rock Stadium.  This team has made a lot of changes and we will be relying on a lot young players, but if you look at the drafts we had last year and this year, I feel pretty confident.

On the offensive side of the ball, we brought in free agent LG Josh Sitton, I feel that is a clear upgrade.  Returning at LT is Laremy Tunsil, and he will most definitely benefit by playing next to Sitton.  At center, we said goodbye to Mike Pouncey, and traded for SF 49ers C Dan Kilgore.  In theory, it will be nice to have all our starting OL practicing together and hopefully developing a rhythm and a chemistry.  Kilgore will probably be an upgrade run blocking, but Pouncey was good last year pass blocking, and throughout his career, so Kilgore will have to play very well to in that regard.

Gone is the go-to-guy Jarvis Landry who caught over 400 passes in 4 years here in Miami, and in his place will be veteran WR Danny Amendola, as well as rookie TE Mike Gesicki, and WR Albert Wilson.  3 new faces for Tannehill, each with their own particular skill set.  I never loved Amendola, but that guy is a clutch performer, helping the Patriots big time in the playoffs with excellent performances.  Wilson was relatively underused in KC, and my hope is it’s not because he didn’t have the goods, it’s because they had too many weapons in KC with Kareem Hunt, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce.  Gesicki can be the TE we’ve craved here for too long, at least as far as a receiver, his blocking is a work in progress.  Gesicki brings athletic ability we haven’t had, and he’s a very talented pass catcher.  We’ll also have the oft (minor injured) Devante Parker and Jakeem Grant as well.  Grant will bring excitement, and Parker disappointment, just the way it usually is.

Ryan Tannehill returns from injury as he hasn’t played a regular season game since December 11th of 2016.  Tannehill is acutely aware this is his team now, and if he can elevate his play, the team will come along as well.  This is a great opportunity for him, I hope he makes the most of it.  With Kenyan Drake, Frank Gore and Kalen Ballage, I think he has the tools to succeed.  I think the backs will share a workload, but Kenyan Drake is the primary back.  There won’t be a workhorse among the 3, but Drake is the lead, Gore next, and then Ballage and Senorise Perry.

On defense, we let go a pro-bowl caliber DT, one who played an exorbitant  amount of plays for us, and he will be replaced by the frequent rotation of Jordan Phillips, Davon Godchaux, Akeem Spence and Vincent Taylor, with an occasional sprinkling of  DE William Hayes.  At LB, 2nd YR Rookie Raekwon McMillan returns after missing last season with an ACL injury.  He’s joined by Kiko Alonso and and a combo of Jerome Baker, Stephone Anthony and Chase Allen.  The biggest change is at CB, where Xavien Howard returns at RCB, but opposite him will be Bobby McCain, who was previously the slot and nickel corner.  Depth wise, Cordrea Tankersley, Torry McTyer and rookie Cornell Armstrong round out the CB position.  At safety, a few veterans return in Reshad Jones, T.J. McDonald, Walt Aikens, but they are joined by do it all rookie sensation Minkah Fitzpatrick.  We’re going to see him on the field A LOT!

So on to the game!  Tennessee will be lead by 5th YR QB Marcus Mariota, and the run game led by big back Derrick Henry (Kenyan Drake’s RB mate at ALA), former Patriots RB Dion Lewis, former Dolphins WR Rishard Matthews, 3rd YR WR Corey Davis and veteran TE Delanie Walker.  The Titans like to impose their will with a power run game led by a tough OL with excellent bookends Taylor Lewan and Jack Conklin.  Henry had previously been splitting carries with RB DeMarco Murray, but with Murray out of the picture, Henry will be getting the lion’s share of carries.  We have struggled defending the run, at least in the preseason, so we’ll see if we can hold here at home.

On offense, Devante Parker is OUT, so Albert Wilson will likely replace Parker as wideout.  In the preseason, the offense was a fast pace, no huddle short pass game clinic.  Not sure if that continues in the regular season, or if we’ll be more balanced with more of a rushing attack, and also get the TE’s more involved in the passing game as well.  We have a rookie kicker, and supposedly Jason Sanders has ice running through his veins.  Let’s hope we don’t need to find out!

Again to the entire blog, pls excuse me for insensitive or ill-timed comments yesterday. This is the first season this century that i did not have my sons in the room with me to watch the Dolphins game, so I spent a lot of time texting them on my phone while watching and blogging. Very difficult to keep up.

Of course the strange weather circumstances did not help.
But the idiots at FOX for some reason think Naples is Tampa Bay territory, so they showed that game instead of ours. So 5 minutes before kickoff when TV usually shifts to the Miami game, i had to jump in the car and go to the pub to watch, where i was surrounded by patty-cheat fans smirking and pompous and condescending to all the other games being shown.

But WE WON, so everything else is inconsequential.

  12. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Something I think i saw was that Gesicki fell down as he crossed the goal line. I don’t care how tall you are, you cannot out-jump the CB if you are skidding through puddles on your face.

That INT was 100% not Tannehill’s fault. It was obvious that he read the underneath LB frozen half-way back and so he lofted a feather touch pass for the rookie TE to box out the CB and snag it for an easy TD.

  13. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I also think Grant ran a confusing sideways squiggle on the end of his route which caused that ball to seem to be over-thrown.

Ryan was throwing to one of the fastest players in the NFL. Why would he not put major air under it and try to lead Grant and hit him in stride? That is where the ball went.

I doubt seriously that there is a play in the playbook called the 35-yd down and squiggle. Why would Grant flatten out at the end of his route instead of continuing to run on the trajectory that he was on. No way a QB can adjust for a pattern with a strange end to it like that. Maybe 8 yds away trying to find a hole on a check down, but you don’t do that to the QB where Grant did it.

The ball was released long before Grant began stutter-stepping sideways. Even if he thought it was the only way he could get free of the CB, he should not do that because the ball is already in the air by then and Grant left the CB as the only guy who could catch it. Uncontested.

    Not Ryan’s fault either.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

There was something odd about that throw. I agree that I think Grant screwed up or ran the wrong route. That int didn’t bother me too much as it was essentially a punt. The other one in the end zone was just a horrible throw

  14. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I do think he threw behind Drake on the 4th down play so KD could not get the second foot down in bounds. Spun him around. Ryan’s fault.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I was watching that play leaning back in the barstool/chair (very high stool), when he went to catch it and get both feet in bounds i was using body english and one of the back legs of the stool i was leaning back on slipped towards the bar and down i went, slammed the ground very hard!

Never been to a game where left during the 3rd Q but was still in the stands for six hours. Those Titans fans don’t travel at all, but place was still packed….least at the start.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Nope — left like an hour into the 2nd delay…. Might have stayed if knew when it would be over but in the stands they gave you zero indication when would end. Caught that explosive 4th Q back at home though.

TEXT BOOK tackle by Fitz! squared the dude up, kept his body between the runner and the endzone and wrapped him up for the tackle. AWESOME!

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It set the tone for the rest of the game. If they score there, they go up 10-0, and who knows what happens.

      Minka is the real deal.

  17. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The INT to Grant didn’t bother me either. I also thought Grant did something odd with his route. But the throw was on 3rd down, and it was basically a short/mid punt, so no real harm done.

The INT in the end zone was a terrible throw, way underthrown. Even if Gesicki doesn’t fall down, he would have had to play defender to stop the CB from intercepting it.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Have to give credit to Tannehill for not giving up on that play after the INT. If Tanny doesn’t force the defender back inside, the CB takes it to the house.

  18. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I just think no pro QB makes a throw that is that horrible without having some intent.
There was no physical reason like pressure on Ryan to cause that ball to go up like a pop fly.

If he had been trying to throw a fade, the ball would’ve been toward the back corner of the end zone. With Gesicki face down on the ground, the DB might still have made an INT, but his momentum would’ve been toward out of bounds, not toward his own goal line.

Tannehill was trying to throw in front of the DB, where he obviously thought his TE would be standing there waiting on it. He had to toss it with a little arc to get over the LB.

Until I hear differently from Gase or Tannehill, that is the way I see that one.

I don’t fault any QB for an INT when the intended receiver has face planted.
PS: It looked almost like the CB threw Gesicki down.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It was man up, LB had the edge to protect against the run and wasn’t a factor in the pass. CB had inside leverage, Gesicki faked inside then went towards the flag. It was a standard fade. Just a really bad throw. I almost think after watching the replay from the perspective of the goal post just now, that the ball may have slipped a bit out of Tanny’s hand.

      From the PBP:

“It was on me,” Tannehill said. “Completely on me. We had a 1-on-1 matchup there. And I have to find a way to get him a better football.”

  19. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    CavKong and Rock …
absolutely agree on Tannehill turning him back in where he too slipped down and Amendola pounced on him.

  20. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Both backs played well yesterday, but Gore was on fire. I wonder if Gase will keep it the work load the same next week of if he will give Gore more carries than Drake. (I tend to doubt it because of his age, but am just wondering.)

    • D's avatar D says:

I think it wont matter much. Gore seems to be healthy and sturdy as a runner and Drake, though probably better with more of the workload, can generate his explosiveness despite being rotated. I do think, however that the delays hurt both of those guys. That game is going to be hard to critique just because of it bing all day type of delays. I thought we did very well to come back and add as much to our productivity after all that lay off. I think there are a few things we can be optimistic about and a few things we can be concerned with, but ultimately i think that that game is a bad litmus test. Im just going to deide to be hopeful from what i saw and try not to read more into it than that at this time.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Gore might get more carries after yesterday, but moving to 50/50 would be a big jump. It’s not like Drake had a bad game….just Gore a good one.

  21. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I did not see the unfortunate injury to TE Walker. Was it on a tackle by TJ?

    • D's avatar D says:

It wasn’t caused by any player, his foot just got hung up in the dirt and twisted wrong. It was a bad injury, im sure its going to end his season but i dont think its career ending even at his age.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It was ugly. The defender was tackling him and rolled up on the ankle as he pulled him down. The ankle got pinned between the ground and defenders body and twisted, not sure who the defender was though.

  22. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Two for ten on 3rd downs yesterday. Torn btwn whether that is a bad sign or one that we played a lot better than the score.

  23. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Perspective!

  24. D's avatar D says:

Im sorry but that was a bad throw, it just was. It was a corner route that either he thre too early, ie it was a fade and he threw it short and early or it was supposed to be a short go route that he should have thrown to the sideline away from the defender. He threw to the inside which was practically right to the defender. Bad throw. t happens, but he needs to get better with that so that he is more effective in the redzone. The other bad throw he had was his second int and that was a poor read and throw on his part.

Im not going to pick apart his entire performance off of those two throws, but if that was a fade (and personally i dont think it was) then he really nees to work on it because, as was pointed out yesterday, he has always been bad at touch passes, specifically fades and the touch arc needed for screens.

I personally feel it was a successful day for him, i thought overall he looked pretty good, and i think he is, despite being a little rusty, picking up where he left off. If he maintains that level of play with consistency and maybe just polishes up a little we could win most games with that kind of performance. If we want to be perennial playoff and Superbowl contenders, he will need to step it up, espeically in the areas i just mentioned.

  29. D's avatar D says:

Ok so looking over game highlights.

The first big pass to the TE, TJ blew coverage by biting on the play action.

The first TD by us to Still was a smidge behind but a really good pass overall. The only reason i mention the a little behind on that pass is, if Adoree Jackson had not thought he was going for a back corner pass, he could have turned around and taken that for 6 the other way. You got to be pretty spot on with those passes.

Nice quick curl to Wilson that Wilson turned into good YAC.

We nee to work on ST tackling and coverage.

The int by Jones was a bad overthrow, but Jones was in the right spot to make the int.

Interception by Butler, it does look like Gesicki was running a corner route. Now im not 100% sure if he was just throwing a jump ball for Gesicki, or if he was attempting a fade, but if that was a fade, he threw it too early and to the wrong spot. Really needs to work on fades.

Interception by Alonzo was all about him playing that play very well. Got a little luck to get the interception, but that play was dead regardless.

Big run by Lewis was on Alonozo, he didnt flow with the run and got eaten up by his blocker, couldnt disengage.

The TD by Lewis was just really good execution on their part and McMillan not making the tackle. Their OL just beat our DL and McMillan who was left to make the play did not.

Grant. Just WOW. I remember when i watched it live i saw the seam they had opened up in the middle for that return, but i saw it closing down pretty fast too. I didnt think he was going to make it and then that little fuckers afterburners kicked in. He is smokin fast.

The TD to still was just a beautiful pass, and a beautiful play all the way around. Nothing to critique. I hope we do a lot more of these.

The second INT by Tanny, now that i saw it, im wondering if there might have been some slippage on that throw. It was almost lofted and its unlike a lot of his throws deep, so i might have to blame the weather on that one now that i had a second look at it.

Second INT by Jones was just a beautiful play on the ball. Not sre how he came up with that one too catching it on the ground like that. Jones is a stud. That really could have been pass interference on Walker too because he shoved Jones which is why he was falling down.

Walker injury, it must have made a loud pop, because i saw our players waiving for the trainers even though they were away from the play. I have heard a bone snap in football and it stands out over all the other noises down on that field. I hope theguy is alight but im almost certain he is done for the year.

I dont think so Cav, the second int, after re-watching it, im pretty sure thats what happened, but that first one, i dont think so. His arm motion looked like it was deliberate, where as the second one his arm motion didnt match the trajectory of the pass.

    • D's avatar D says:

Well if Gase said it i guess its true, it just didnt look like that in the replay.

*The two delays totaled three hours, 59 minutes.

*Estimated there were ten thousand fans at the end (OD and I not among them).
*During the 2nd delay the Phins players ate their post-game meal (wonder if the Titans had one).
*When 2nd delay started the Dolphins told everyone in the 300s they could move down to field level and pick a seat (class move).

    ————————————————–
Gesicki was on the ground because he was expecting the pass to the back corner and was adjusting for the catch and lost balance. there was no way he could have caught that ball if he fell or not. Butler had position on him for where the ball was thrown.

Wouldnt have mattered. If the ball had been where it was supposed to be (again, could have been weather, could have been an errant pass, but it would have been a TD. No way Butler could have prevented Gesicki from catching it over him if it was high pointed and put in that back corner. Butler has hops but not that kind of hops.

  38. D's avatar D says:

Jones probably deserves the game ball on defense but id be tempted to give it to Minkah. Minkah was all over the place, his coverage was good, his tackling was good, he almost got a pick, he was really impressive. I think with Jones’ experience its unfair to say, but you kind of expect a game like that out of him. Minkah is a rookie in his first game, a home game at that, so you know he was juiced and yet he went out there and had a very disciplined solid game.

  39. D's avatar D says:

Still also probably deserves the game ball but damn if all the receivers didnt show up and do some exciting things in the game. Amendola darts around like a little hummingbird. Wilson is slippery and fast, i can see him turning little plays into big ones. Grants is like a mini Wilson (can you have a mini of a mini?). This could be a really good receiving group.

Was Ballage on the active roster? If so i really think he needed to be in there at the end. There was no need to have Drake or Gore taking any punishment at the end to run out the game. There wasnt a whole lot of reason for Tanny to be in there if thy were just going to run three times either. Osweiler or Fales could have easily handed off three times. They should have loaded up in Jumbo with Escobar and Smythe and handed off to Ballage. Jets sweep with Wilson might have also been a nice time eater. Either way i didnt really like that last series much, i thought that was the worst game calls of the day.

It was a RPO and in those plays he is a live contestant. He cant and will be hit. Man what a fucking panzy.

Also learned yesterday that we can set up the tailgate in the same Orange lot as last year. It is still there and intact even if a lot of lot changes have gone on. Son — you want me to order your Orange pass when get the others?

  64. D's avatar D says:

Man the Titans are salty about those injuries. They want to make those blatant intentional injuries, but they weren’t. I mean i know its in the nature of fans to be upset when their top players get hurt, but Hayes did nothing wrong. Branch’s hit was the closest thing to illegal as i can see, it was borderline crack back, but the proximity of where the play was really makes that questionable. It supposed to be something that a player away from the play gets hit while the play is moving away from them to be called for crackback. They were right in the thick of it. It was unnecessary, i agree, but i think that one was even legal.

  66. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ryan started to play more like this before he went down in 2016 but I see a much more poised guy out there then earlier in his career. Earlier in his career he sometimes seemed to rush things and wasn’t sure where to go and also likely didn’t have much faith in his protection. But he looked really relaxed out there yesterday. There was one play in the red zone where he was forced out of the pocket rolled left but instead of throwing across his body on the move with a defender covering him, he stopped, reset his feet and threw a strike. I don’t remember him doing it quite like that before.

Maybe the game is slowing down for him and he’s more confident. We need him to play that way if we want to get back to the playoffs.

  67. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

“Then there are the reports from NBC’s Peter King that Gase gave the players an extra off day, but Tannehill asked the offensive players to show up and study film anyway. You want leadership? It’s not cussing out your players and showboating…it’s working on your off day, and convincing your entire unit to do the same.”

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe that’s why they looked sharp and on the same page as opposed to some other teams who looked disorganized.

The short and intermediate passing game complemented the run game well keeping drives alive. If you can do that the big plays will come.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yep. The offense did look pretty sharp. Just a couple of close plays (like Drake 4th down, and a couple of FGs in the red zone)) and we would have broken this game open.

    • D's avatar D says:

Ryan didnt have happy feet and he didnt move backwards in the pocket this game. Thats big improvements on even 2016. Part of it is he was given a bigger pocket but some of it was he didnt freak out and start dropping backwards as soon as the slightest pressure started coming on him. His footwork seemed better and his drops were better. He seemed to really feel the pocket this time and to me thats the biggest improvement i saw with him in this game. Part of that might have been Cutler believe it or not, because Cutler did do that pretty well and with all that time studying Cutler’s tape he could have picked up some do and some donts from his game. One of the things Tanny never got was a chance to learn behind a vet, and though he wasnt really “behind” Cutler, im sure that helped some.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

He definitely looked comfortable sliding and moving in the pocket. It also helped he had great protection the better part of the game.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Good points. Whatever it was it looks like he bought in. I do know that the coaches worked with him on his pocket presence and feet in the offseason. Solid pass pro can go along way with that too. The OL actually created a pocket for him to stay in or step up in where in years past it wasn’t really there.

  68. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I thought the Hayes hit on Mariota was dirty, because he took about 3 steps after the ball was gone, but whatever they didnt call anything. He had to know he didnt have the ball. I wonder, if he was instructed to do it.

We kept hearing how great Mariota was and what we needed to do to win, before the game. After the game they were saying the Titans may need to move on from him.

    • D's avatar D says:

Steve, it was a RPO, Hayes can hit him, there s nothing dirty about that. Mariota is a RB for that matter at that point in that play.

      • D's avatar D says:

Thats the dangers of those kind of play calls is your QB is going to get hit. Also if you watch it you will see Hayes didnt just lay into him. It would have been legal even if Hayes had pancaked him.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s not about being legal. At what point is a QB off limit after he gets rid of the ball?

  69. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I remember a play with Cam Newton once where defenders held up on him as to not get a roughing the passer call and Newton then ran for a big gain. QBs can’t have it both ways.

  70. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Everyone knows this Omar and why being in shotgun all day is not a good recipe.

  71. D's avatar D says:

“Blandino noted that if the offense is running a play designed to keep the defense guessing about who’s getting the ball, it’s only fair for the defense to be allowed to tackle both players who might have the ball.

“The quarterback and the running back, they’re both treated as runners. We don’t know who has the football, we don’t know who’s going to take it, so both players are treated as runners,” Blandino said.

For all the talk of the league office protecting defenseless quarterbacks, Blandino made clear that quarterbacks are only considered defenseless in certain situations, and running the read option is not one of those situations.”

  72. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I loved the play on Lewan, that cheap shot artist got what he deserved.

    • D's avatar D says:

Thats wasnt a crack back hit because they were right there where the ball was. If that had been done away from the play that was very much a crack back. Again thats the rules of it. I do think it was unnecessary, but like ya said, he probably had it coming because he is a pretty dirty player himself.

    ———————————————
He is off limits after it has been fully established that he is no longer part of the play. Hayes hit him just after he handed off. Its not like he was standing there for a few seconds and then Hayes comes up and decks him. He handed off and Hayes tackled/hit him as a potential person who had the ball. I didnt see anything dirty and i went back and watched the play a few times to be sure.
