2018 Season – Game 2 – Dolphins @ Jets

1-0 baby!  The Dolphins started the season at home against the Titans, in one of the most bizarre and easily the most lengthy football games in the history of the sport.  7 hours, and 10 minutes.  Wow!  Lightning strikes in the vicinity of Hard Rock caused a couple of weather delays which put the total game time from start to finish at 7:10, which is the longest game in NFL history.

The good thing is that the Dolphins team remained focused on the task at hand, winning the game, and I would give some credit to Head Coach Adam Gase for keeping his team prepared, and to GM Chris Grier and VP Mike Tannenbaum for shedding the roster of the “ME” players and building a team of players who share a common goal, helping each other make the Dolphins a winning team.

The Dolphins had a nice balance on offense, Kenyan Drake getting the most touches as expected, and it was especially nice to see Frank Gore come in and spark the offense.  He looks fresh, especially for a veteran RB with 13 NFL seasons under his belt, and over 3200 carries.  I think it’s a great tandem, they complement each other very well.  The O-line did their job well, and both backs were able to move the ball.

Ryan Tannehill looked very good in the game, but a couple of poor throws somewhat derailed his fine effort.  I really thought the throw in the end zone to Gesicki, whether Mike slipped or not, was too flat, not enough arc, and also just thrown too close to the defender.  Make that throw more towards the sideline, and deeper towards the back of the endzone with more arc, and there’s very little chance if any that it gets picked off.  The other was either an overthrow or a miscommunication with Jakeem Grant, and without certainty as to which, I can’t blame Tannehill on that one.  The play-action TD pass to Kenny Stills was a beauty, great protection, and a very accurate strike for the TD.  Take away the end zone miscue to Gesicki or the other INT intended for Grant, and Tannehill has done exactly what I would hope he could do.

The Titans after the injury to starting QB Marcus Mariota were not the same team, but the injuries to starting OT’s Taylor Lewan and Jack Conklin, LT and RT respectively is really what killed the Titans.  Those 2 are aggressive, mean and nasty run blockers, and the Dolphins limited the run game, especially when big back Derrick Henry was in, to 26 yards on 10 carries.  Dion Lewis, who is quicker and shiftier had more success, rushing for 75 yards on 16 carries.

On defense, the first thing I noticed right away, was Minkah Fitzpatrick.  He didn’t do one spectacular thing on Sunday, but damn if he wasn’t always around the ball.  You just can’t teach what he has, that desire to digest football knowledge, study film to learn players and teams tendencies, and the desire to work in the weight room to become the best player he can be.  Minkah had that before he got here, but he’s ours man, and I’m thrilled we have him.  He was in on 6 tackles, but despite that, he just seemed to be so involved in the game, and he was out there a lot. If anyone has snap counts, I’d love to know how many, as well as for the D-line.  The frequent rotation worked as well as I could have hoped, and the youngins Godchaux and Taylor look like all the world to have been brilliant draft picks.  You just don’t expect a 5th and 6th RD defensive tackle to give you what Godchaux and Taylor are giving us.  Think of how absurd it is to pay a player over $20M to do what these guys are giving us!  Talk about value, it’s insane!  The LB’s weren’t asked to do everything, as we saw 3 safeties out there often enough. Kiko led the team with 6 solo tackles, and both Raekwon McMillan and Jerome Baker had 3 solos and 3 assists.  Very possible this type of thing plays out the entire season.

The Jets come off a very successful road win against the Detroit Lions.  They banged up QB Matthew Stafford pretty good, and the battered QB threw 1 TD and 4 INT’s.  While Matthew Stafford hurt his team, the Jets rookie QB did the opposite.  Sam Darnold played a very solid game, despite throwing an INT on his very first pass attempt.  The rookie bounced back well however, and helped lead his team to an impressive 48-17 drubbing of the Lions. He had a nice balanced rushing attack with Bilal Powell and Isaiah Crowell with a 1-1A type approach.  Crowell finished with 102 yards on 10 carries and 2 TD’s and Powell had 12 carries for 60 yards.  Quincy Enunwa has resumed his spot as the go-to-guy of the offense, after being out with an injury last year.  Robbie Anderson remains the big play danger, he’s like our version of Kenny Stills, except of course Anderson threatens police officers with vulgar things he will do to their wives, but on the gridiron, they are similar threats.

Dolphins vs Jets are always crazy games, as last year’s Fest game was evidence of such.  The Dolphins pulled out a last minute victory when Bobby McCain intercepted Josh McCown with 47 seconds remaining in the game, allowing Cody Parkey to kick the game winning 39 yard F to win it 31-28.  What a FEST-ivious win!  There will not be a MetLife Takeover Fest this time, but hopefully the NYC Dolfans contingency will be sufficient to help our boys complete another successful takeover that ends with a Dolphins victory.

If the Dolphins can continue their success rushing the football with Drake and Gore, and keep the pocket clean for Tannehill, we should be able to score against the Jets.  Devante Parker should be back, but I just can’t count on him to be a big role player, so I won’t.  We have enough weapons with Stills, Amendola, Wilson and the 2 backs, and anything we can get from Gesicki and Parker is just gravy.  On defense, just limit Bilal Powell.  Crowell doesn’t scare me, but Powell just rips off those big plays, so we need to keep him in check.  Darnold probably won’t be shaken, we should treat him like any QB, not expose ourselves with a ton of blitzes.  I think if we do that, he might make us pay, so just stay disciplined, keep using the 3 safeties often, and I think we can beat them.  Don’t let Anderson get behind the secondary.

We decided to stay at the Hard Rock in Hollywood this week when we came down to adopt our dog. Didn’t know it but Queensryche was opening for the Scorpions at the hotel. It was sold out but got tickets from a scalper, center 7th row. Only spent $80 over what seats cost. What a great concert! Neither band has lost much if anything at all over the decades. The lead singer of the scorpions after 4 decades sounded great! “Wind of Change” sounded like I was listening to a recorded version.

“Anything” is a strong choice of words

I’m guessing both bands probably have lost a lot of hair since their prime 😁

That’s crazy to have that caliber of bands from the 80s play at the Hard Rock – I wonder if that’s a regular occurrence

Also, had to stop by the stadium for some picks and shopping. Got me a 2017 Tanne jersey for 50% off. I’m not cheap just frugal. LOL Got a pic next to Rashad since he was a beast last game! Also, now y’all know what I look like.

Pig, from what I understand is that the Scorpions had to cancel a concert in that area a while back (not sure when) so they made a deal with the Hard Rock to make up for it. They are on a world tour right now and playing much larger venues. I bet Hard Rock paid them a lot of money to play there cause (IMO) they are really trying to promote their massive 1.5 billion renovation and construction of their guitar shaped high rise hotel addition. It’s going to be real nice and have a 10 acre pool area. Was also told it is going to have the largest Hard Rock concert venue in the world.
Could also explain why the slots seemed to be a little “tight” as I am suffering a little from PCD (Post Casino Depression) LOL.

I’m surprised the number isn’t higher. Realize that there are sometimes special circumstances by which people won’t/can’t evacuate. And of course… there are just the stubborn.

M13, like the authorities always say, buildings and homes can be rebuilt and material things replaced, lives cannot. People who do this put responders in danger. There was plenty of time to prepare to leave. It’s not like staying with your home makes any difference. It’s not like you can battle the storm. It’s not just stubborn, it’s selfish.

As for the # of people asking to be rescued, I guess that’s just the # that requested the rescue.

Well that’s unfortunate and sad as the storm could end their life as well.
    —————-
My fam lives 1/2 an hour inland in Virginia and aren’t even close to the impact area… yet, they were under a MANDATORY evacuation 2 DAYS ago. HUGE false alarm… and then we wonder why so many won’t evacuate when told to do so.

That’s yet another part of the equation that you aren’t taking into account… FALSE ALARMS… or the little boy who called WOLF.

As I stated to you up the page, I’m surprised the number (150) isn’t higher. When the flood of ’11 hit my area, there were FAR MORE than 150 people who didn’t evacuate.

You seemed to be GRIPING that 150 people didn’t evacuate. Well I’m here to tell ya, that may be the very LOWEST amount of people in recent years/decades to NOT evacuate… especially considering the magnitude of this storm. That number is EXTREMELY low(!)… like, 1 person per mile on the coast… and I’m not so sure that they are all “asking for help” now.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dude, it’s what I read. My uncle who lives in Florida did the same thing a few years back and the noise from the winds were so haunting that he said never again. He fled for Irma.

Why do you take some things so personally?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m not sure I took it so personally. Why do you think that?

I’m saying, if what you heard was correct, that ONLY 150 people decided to weather the storm, why scoff at that? That may be a record LOW!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m griping, not taking things into account, I’m here to tell ya! What was that all about. It was a report I shared nothing more. I didn’t make it up. It will probably become more than 150 at some point as well.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

What part of VA is your fam from? Lived in Richmond area and then NoVA for over 20 years.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Also 1 person per mile on the coast is worse than one concentrated area. That means responders have to spread out even more to save people.

You also took the reports for that storm in 2011 for granted for political reasons and the wolf was real.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Political reasons? And “reports”, from something I personally went through? To HELL with those “reports”, which didn’t even make national headlines!

That “wolf” was real? YES, it was. One of the VERY rare times the ‘WOLF’ was REAL, and we were unprepared.

You’re chasing your tail, Tim. This isn’t about politics, it’s about REAL $#!T. I will NOT live in terror, expecting the very WORST in every situation… DAMN well knowing that 90% of the time, it’s the little boy crying WOLF. I’m nevertheless ALWAYS prepared.

And YOU think that I see the so-called “Boogeyman” at every turn? “Check yaself, Q!”.

Woah, woah, WOAH! Pump your brakes! Let’s slow down here, alright? I NEVER accused the “liberal” media of suppressing — nor “sensationalizing”(?!!) — what happened here in ’11… FACT. PLEASE, do not put words in my mouth, friend. I DID say that the MEDIA, AS A WHOLE, ignored what happened to my region. My West Coast folks didn’t believe what was going on here until I posted LOCAL reporting.

And you stated, “How is this about me?”. I NEVER once said that this had ANYTHING to do with YOU, Bro: you’re reaching for something that is NOT there.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes you did. I remember it well and people on the former blog thought I was being too hard on you for bringing it up after the fact when I said blaming liberalism for everything is a dangerous thing to do. Take warnings seriously and criticize afterwards when in fact it was sensationalized. Your situation in 2011 was not sensationalized as you know but you were saying that prior to the damage you suffered.

You and I are in PERFECT agreement on your first sentence above!!! HELL YEAH!!!

Don’t know what to say to you on your second sentence, here. I NEVER stated that YOU are taking it personally… you suggested to me that I’M taking it personally! Geez!!!

And as for those “150 people” you shared with us… they are ON THEIR OWN. This isn’t even a novice interpretation, it is KNOWN. If ya don’t evacuate when it’s mandatory, do NOT expect others to lose their lives to save your azz. Most of these 150 people (not all) are probably up for “Darwin Awards”.

I even said my uncle did the same thing once and he got the crap scared out of him and his daughters once again had to talk him out of doing it again with Irma.

And I LOVE that about you, my “older Brother”… that you CARE!!! ❤️

Unfortunately (or perhaps, fortunately), this will never be a ‘Utopian’ society… whereas, we ALL are made to agree.

I CAN tell you, my man… that we ARE agreeing, more than disagreeing.

Those who HAVE the ability to get out of the way of this hurricane, had BETTER get out of it’s way. Perhaps I shouldn’t have cited my fam in VA (with an extremely disabled needs kid), but my point stands on the VERY few who may not be able to evac, due to extreme circumstances.

HOW MANY YEARS HAVE ME, MF-13, and several other board members been complaining about the “DOOFUS BRIGADE’s” refusal to adequately address our needs in the O-Line??? The answer is “TOO MANY YEARS!” Last year the Fins FO splurged and used a 5th round pick on the King of the Buffet Line himself, the Sultan of Golden Corral, the one and only ISAAC ASIATA!! (btw, “ASIATA,” is Polynesian for “Bigger Than Asia!” He proceeded to EAT HIS WAY out of the NFL, dressing out for only 1 game in his entire 2-year career with Miami!! But, at least, the FO only wasted ONE draft pick on ASIATA! Had they not wasted THREE DRAFT PICKS ON CARROO, we might have had some OTHER PICKS WE COULD HAVE USED TO DRAFT A LINEMAN!! Oh well, the “DOOFUS BRIGADE” remains convinced that everything’s going to be OK and that this is just a bump in the road rather than a pothole. WE shall see, won’t we??

Meanwhile JOSH will be Sitton on the sidelines for the rest of the season. And, perhaps, he’ll be joined by a Miami running back later this year. Fortunately, tho’, Miami DID ADD a 5th running back to their practice squad so the loss of one back won’t set the team as far back as losing their starting Center will.

NOW the big question. Will the FO DARE to use one of their first three picks next year to fend off what just happened in GAME ONE??? Or will they move up in the draft and pick, say, another wide receiver or another Jordan and use 3 picks to do it??

    STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES!!

Do you realize even the Cowboys who only a couple of years ago were considered the best OL in the game have had injuries and depth issues and recently traded with the Chiefs for a backup OL?

      Mr. Campbell,

I humbly submit to you, that I’ve ALWAYS taken an Offensive Lineman, within our our first 3 picks, for the better part of the last decade.

There is NO EXCUSE(!) not to do so!

Without an effective O-Line, there will be NO passing Offense, NOR a rushing Offense. Don Shula KNEW this, even from way back when.

And even when (little) Peter King thought we’d make the Super Bowl in 2006, he FAILED to realize that our O-Line was riddled with deficiency. Sure, we had Pro-Bowlers at QB, RB, WR, and a future Pro-Bowler (at the time, which never happened) at TE in Randy McMichael… but our O-Line SUCKED!!!

A team can ONLY GO SO FAR as it’s O-LINE will take it. WORD!

TIM; It’s NOT the number of Linemen. It’s the quality of the linemen. These free agent old guys don’t always work out (as we just saw with Sitton). Had we used ONE of the picks we wasted on Carroo and, perhaps, a mid-round pick THIS SEASON on an O-Linemen, we might have been better prepared for this loss of our starting center. Getting ZERO offensive linemen out of the last two drafts may seem like a GREAT IDEA to some of Ross’s ass lickers, but it seems like a terrible idea to me.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Do you know how many young top shelf OL and guys in their prime go down? What then?

Most teams have OL depth issues. The salary cap and lack of reliable depth in the draft due to the college game the way they play causes this. It’s not just a Dolphins issue, it’s an issue all across the league. We have to replace one spot as of now. Some teams have issues at 2-3 spots.

We just drafted Tunsil in 2016 1st rd. In 2014 James 1st rd. How many more can you keep drafting? Injuries suck! It’s impossible to predict.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

You bring forth a GREAT question, Tim! How many more can you keep drafting, for example. And yes, injuries (to any one of FIVE on the O-Line) suck!

And that’s EXACTLY why I’d continue to draft an O-Lineman nearly every year within the first 3 rounds of every draft.

If there is EVER any unit that must “gel”, it’s the O-Line… not the D-Line, not the Secondary, nor any other position group.

JMO, bud. I’m with Old Dolfan on this matter.

No team is going to have 10 top notch linemen on the team. Most teams are lucky to have 5. You can argue we have 6,err… had 6, now have 5.

Pigs – the Dalai said countries should take them in, care for them, and send them home. Nationalism doesn’t have to be white, you introduced that paradigm. Can a Spaniard be a “white” nationalist? The issue in Europe, and with refugees versus immigrants writ large, is not skin color. It is assimilation or, to be more accurate, the lack thereof. Refugees, not being willing immigrants, want to recreate the culture they left, not become part of their host culture. Europe is being flooded with refugees whose culture is inimical to their own. The reluctance to allow their societal norms to be destroyed is natural.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s what is happening in the USA. There are areas along the Hudson in NJ where cultures try very hard not to assimilate and piss a lot of people off. Then those people get called racist.

It’s says Europe belongs to Europeans in the link itself. I didn’t introduce that – that’s the plain meaning of it. Let’s not play dumb about it.

There are Spaniard white nationalist – so the answer to that is yes.

European politics are a different world from ours – but the point of the European Union is an exchange of culture through the free flow of people In Europe in a Europe without borders. Yes it’s strictly European – but it’s obviously connected to a global economy and the next logical step includes noneuropeams entering Europe – that’s how Europe will survive 20 years from now.

THe working age in Europe (and in the Us) Is shrinking. As baby boomers get closer and closer to retirement there will be a smaller working class to put into the pot (with taxes) mass immigration is a solution to that and it’s may be the only way Europe can avoid bankruptcy or strangling taxes on its it’s citzens

That link you posted involves scandanavia – and I can’t even imagine what it’s like to grow up there, where you remained neutral through the Cold War and didn’t have mass immigration and a govt that’s pretty socialist and pays for wvyrhing – then enter the European Union in he mid-90s and deal with culture shock at mass levels. They are obviously struggling to adjust I’m sure the decisions the EU makes probably seem like it has nothing to do with a common citizen their since those decisions are made by French, German, Dutch and wherever else those leaders come from

But that said – i tend to think assimilation or lack of assimilation is irrelevant – and I think emphasis on it rings of xenophobia rather than economic/political logic. There will be a hundred million less Europeans in 2100 than there are today with massive immigration. U

Of course I can make the same exact argument about the US – but I won’t

I don’t think management wants to trade him. I think they know what’s he capable of if he ever gets a chance to play healthy or relatively healthy. He makes us a better offense and team when he can do what he’s capable of.

I hope he plays tomorrow and we slaughter the Jets.

My vision is we harass Darnold all day and force him into mistakes. The Jets will try to protect him with a running game and short and medium range passes. We need to make that not enough. The Jets defense is physical but they are not a dominant defense. We have plenty of skill players to challenge them and make plays.

Have you heard about this today? I’d heard one eyewitness estimate that the shark was roughly 15 feet long (likely a great white).

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Sad… and yes probably a great white. They thrive up there due to the seal population – the great white’s favorite food. There are lots of videos of fisherman catching stripers up there and when reeling them in small great whites take them not far from the boat.

The reason there aren’t a lot of shark attacks up there is because the waters are calmer and not much surfing.

I remember when I was 12-14 my parents took me there twice and the first time I got over the whole Jaws thing I went swimming in the ocean again. Instead of swimming out I swam laterally along the coast maybe 15-20 yards out. The next day we went to Provincetown for lunch and to take in all the shops etc. While at the docks where they come in with huge tuna, a boat came in with a 10 foot blue shark with big nasty teeth. I asked where did you catch that and they said; ah… not too faw off the shaw. That ended swimming for me in the ocean again for another 10 years. LOL

Even though blue sharks are not known for attacks on humans it didn’t matter to me at that age. I was up close to this shark hanging upside down and saw the teeth.
