2018 Season – Game 2 – Dolphins @ Jets

1-0 baby!  The Dolphins started the season at home against the Titans, in one of the most bizarre and easily the most lengthy football games in the history of the sport.  7 hours, and 10 minutes.  Wow!  Lightning strikes in the vicinity of Hard Rock caused a couple of weather delays which put the total game time from start to finish at 7:10, which is the longest game in NFL history.

The good thing is that the Dolphins team remained focused on the task at hand, winning the game, and I would give some credit to Head Coach Adam Gase for keeping his team prepared, and to GM Chris Grier and VP Mike Tannenbaum for shedding the roster of the “ME” players and building a team of players who share a common goal, helping each other make the Dolphins a winning team.

The Dolphins had a nice balance on offense, Kenyan Drake getting the most touches as expected, and it was especially nice to see Frank Gore come in and spark the offense.  He looks fresh, especially for a veteran RB with 13 NFL seasons under his belt, and over 3200 carries.  I think it’s a great tandem, they complement each other very well.  The O-line did their job well, and both backs were able to move the ball.

Ryan Tannehill looked very good in the game, but a couple of poor throws somewhat derailed his fine effort.  I really thought the throw in the end zone to Gesicki, whether Mike slipped or not, was too flat, not enough arc, and also just thrown too close to the defender.  Make that throw more towards the sideline, and deeper towards the back of the endzone with more arc, and there’s very little chance if any that it gets picked off.  The other was either an overthrow or a miscommunication with Jakeem Grant, and without certainty as to which, I can’t blame Tannehill on that one.  The play-action TD pass to Kenny Stills was a beauty, great protection, and a very accurate strike for the TD.  Take away the end zone miscue to Gesicki or the other INT intended for Grant, and Tannehill has done exactly what I would hope he could do.

The Titans after the injury to starting QB Marcus Mariota were not the same team, but the injuries to starting OT’s Taylor Lewan and Jack Conklin, LT and RT respectively is really what killed the Titans.  Those 2 are aggressive, mean and nasty run blockers, and the Dolphins limited the run game, especially when big back Derrick Henry was in, to 26 yards on 10 carries.  Dion Lewis, who is quicker and shiftier had more success, rushing for 75 yards on 16 carries.

On defense, the first thing I noticed right away, was Minkah Fitzpatrick.  He didn’t do one spectacular thing on Sunday, but damn if he wasn’t always around the ball.  You just can’t teach what he has, that desire to digest football knowledge, study film to learn players and teams tendencies, and the desire to work in the weight room to become the best player he can be.  Minkah had that before he got here, but he’s ours man, and I’m thrilled we have him.  He was in on 6 tackles, but despite that, he just seemed to be so involved in the game, and he was out there a lot. If anyone has snap counts, I’d love to know how many, as well as for the D-line.  The frequent rotation worked as well as I could have hoped, and the youngins Godchaux and Taylor look like all the world to have been brilliant draft picks.  You just don’t expect a 5th and 6th RD defensive tackle to give you what Godchaux and Taylor are giving us.  Think of how absurd it is to pay a player over $20M to do what these guys are giving us!  Talk about value, it’s insane!  The LB’s weren’t asked to do everything, as we saw 3 safeties out there often enough. Kiko led the team with 6 solo tackles, and both Raekwon McMillan and Jerome Baker had 3 solos and 3 assists.  Very possible this type of thing plays out the entire season.

The Jets come off a very successful road win against the Detroit Lions.  They banged up QB Matthew Stafford pretty good, and the battered QB threw 1 TD and 4 INT’s.  While Matthew Stafford hurt his team, the Jets rookie QB did the opposite.  Sam Darnold played a very solid game, despite throwing an INT on his very first pass attempt.  The rookie bounced back well however, and helped lead his team to an impressive 48-17 drubbing of the Lions. He had a nice balanced rushing attack with Bilal Powell and Isaiah Crowell with a 1-1A type approach.  Crowell finished with 102 yards on 10 carries and 2 TD’s and Powell had 12 carries for 60 yards.  Quincy Enunwa has resumed his spot as the go-to-guy of the offense, after being out with an injury last year.  Robbie Anderson remains the big play danger, he’s like our version of Kenny Stills, except of course Anderson threatens police officers with vulgar things he will do to their wives, but on the gridiron, they are similar threats.

Dolphins vs Jets are always crazy games, as last year’s Fest game was evidence of such.  The Dolphins pulled out a last minute victory when Bobby McCain intercepted Josh McCown with 47 seconds remaining in the game, allowing Cody Parkey to kick the game winning 39 yard F to win it 31-28.  What a FEST-ivious win!  There will not be a MetLife Takeover Fest this time, but hopefully the NYC Dolfans contingency will be sufficient to help our boys complete another successful takeover that ends with a Dolphins victory.

If the Dolphins can continue their success rushing the football with Drake and Gore, and keep the pocket clean for Tannehill, we should be able to score against the Jets.  Devante Parker should be back, but I just can’t count on him to be a big role player, so I won’t.  We have enough weapons with Stills, Amendola, Wilson and the 2 backs, and anything we can get from Gesicki and Parker is just gravy.  On defense, just limit Bilal Powell.  Crowell doesn’t scare me, but Powell just rips off those big plays, so we need to keep him in check.  Darnold probably won’t be shaken, we should treat him like any QB, not expose ourselves with a ton of blitzes.  I think if we do that, he might make us pay, so just stay disciplined, keep using the 3 safeties often, and I think we can beat them.  Don’t let Anderson get behind the secondary.

I tracked the game at work, read tweets, saw the box score, read the blog, and saw the highlights. There’s not much I can add to what y’all have already stated! Good job, folks… and GREAT away WIN by our PHINS!!!

    Just a few notes…
    – Seems like we’re going to miss Josh Sitton, yet our O-Line played fairly NICE against a stout stej Defense. Ted Larsen is a definite downgrade from Sitton (Twitter and Randy both noticed this).

    – I didn’t watch the game, but I clearly saw Raekwon as a liability in coverage on two separate big plays by the stej… at least that’s what it LOOKED like (could have been a miscommunication issue).

    – Surprised that (coach’s decision) we deactivated DeVante and Cordrea. I sensed DeVante could be on the trading block [I alluded to it last night (Browns parting with Josh Gordon), and I saw that Stanger picked up on that just before the game when it was announced], and it’s sad that Cordrea has regressed so much. Time to bring Amerson in for a visit: McCain is too short to be covering these larger WRs on the boundary. And with as much as we play zone-D, Amerson would be the PERFECT fit… and at a vet minimal salary now.

    – Our D-Line IS better without Suh!!! And we don’t miss his $20M+ salary!!! This Defense of ours is FOR REAL!

    – Lastly, Gase needs to call better plays on Offense. Some of his calls were mind-numbing (according to many of y’all), but I’ll give him ALL of this: his idea of a ‘culture change’ is CERTAINLY paying off, and it SHOWS. This team is PLAYING with charisma and unity!

I think once we get all the bugs worked out on Offense, this team could go DEEP into the playoffs this year. That’s not the homer in me, that’s the analyst in me.

    2-0!!!

It sounded underhanded at Barkley at first… but I think he was talking more about their lack of an O-Line to block for Saquon and protect Eli. Yes… even the young phenom Saquon and the GREAT Eli are having trouble behind a PATHETICALLY WEAK O-Line.

Mr. Campbell, I’ve got your back, boss! Just one more injury (it’s going to happen) to one of our O-Linemen, and we’re in DEEP poop. It happens to EVERY team, EVERY year. And as per usual, we are ill-prepared.

I think he thought the Jets just played poorly, I think that was the angle he was looking at it from. It wasn’t that we were great today, they just screwed up too many times. Whatever, I see a team that’s playing good sound football, everyone is contributing, and dammit, that defensive line rotation is kicking some ass! Suh fucking who??? That fuck won’t tweet about our team anymore, and he should be ashamed at how well they’re doing without him!

    —————————————————
Jets played sorta poorly, but that’s how it goes. The “good team bad team” discussion is about what team plays at a better consistency. If you played well on your first game and turned around and played poorly on your second game, how can you say the second game isn’t indicative of how good the team is but the first is, without that being homerism.

The jets 48 points in game one now looks a lot more like a bad defense than a good offense imo. Their defense is legitimately good, but not good enough to get the job done. We won and we played well enough to do so.

Id love to slam that dude’s opinion but its just the opinion of a fan coming back down to earth, and we know that feeling all to well. The fact is his the Jets just aren’t that good, and he is having a hard time accepting that after they had a wet dream of a game 1.

Looking like we have in the past id say that Oakland definately has the advantage, but given how our team has been playing and how well Minkah has been covering and how well our safeties have been playing in both run support and pass coverage, id say we match pretty well with them this year. Their strengths are playing into ours, so it likely comes down to whose OL performs best and winning the starting field position game, ie ST play. I do think we have the better running attack given we have two backs that can get it done and they really only have 1. We are pretty evenly matched several other areas.

Soooo, Orob, just for clarity sake you average out the runs to make drake look worse because of the 1 run for a loss he had? Their performance minus that one run looks pretty damn equal. This is of course taking out the 20 yard run by Drake.

I will argue that Drake left us in better down and distance situations that Gore did.

    SteveCC:

I guess we both get the same tv feed because I too think it would be a big mistake to underestimate the Raiders. I wish they had pulled that game out, but 0-3 is a desperately bad start and Gruden is going to do everything in his power to prevent that. I think this game is a pick-em if the Fins are on their toes, I think the Raiders are going to win if they’re not. The trip back east is tough to overcome, but staring down 0-3 will be powerful motivation to overcome the jetlag

I agree its going to be a fight, a tough game, and i think if you go down the line checking off boxes you find the teams to be pretty even. I think it comes down to things like special teams, takeaways, penalties and homefield advantage. I think we should have the slightest of edges, and i agree 100% its not enough to overlook a team that surely has to be hungry for a win.

2-0 nobody has had to have a great game for us to win, physical/skill positions rotating well making someone out like Parker or Amendola for a short time not noticeable. Playing like a team, all units contributing.

Keys to victory for the Raiders, stop everone.

Steve i think its even simpler than that. Just do your job and do it well. If we play as a team and every player executes his part correctly, they wont get a lot of big plays, we wont have a lot of penalties, and we will open ourselves up for big plays of our own when they fail.

I hate playing teams hungry for a win
That’s what I expect from the Raiders too

But if you knock them down early and get some quick scores, teams like that fold quick

The thing about the raiders is their pass rush is really bad

  87. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    I liked the “keys” from the Jet’s game. I forget who posted it and the exact terminology but it was something like;

    1. score more points than the Raiders.
    2. prevent the Raiders from scoring more points than us.

    CLASSIC STRATEGY!

We had that good drive going late in the 4th quarter and I hated those two play calls that put us in 3rd and 19. Why run those deep stretch plays at that point? Gore bailed us out making that catch on the low throw to get 20 and a 1st down.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      The stretch play was junk
I almost though a shoe at my tv

Agreed – we got bailed out

There was some good playcalling in the game but there were a few 🤷‍♂️

    I KNOW!

It’s a small sample size, but I am really excited about how are DT’s are playing. Through two games last season WITH Suh, out DT’s had 8 tackles and 8 assists.

Through two games this year they have 16 tackles and 9 assists.

The D-line seems much more active in making plays this year.

  90. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

In the NFL you can’t take any teams lightly. Most games are competitive. As fans we can say we should beat this team or that team but coaches and players can’t act like that.

  91. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, Tannehill is moving around pretty well after the surgery and wearing that brace but yesterday I felt that he’s lost a step. In years past I felt like he would have escaped two of those sacks where he was rolling out. I was surprised he got caught. The OL isn’t playing poorly but they need to get better as well. There’s plenty that needs to get cleaned up across the board but overall I like the direction this team is headed.

  92. D's avatar D says:

Damn Fitzpatrick has been shelling people, 2 of his receivers, DJax ad OJ Howard are averagin 30+ yards a catch. Poor Mike Evans who seems to get a bulk of the recptions is only averaging 13.5 lol

Dolphins three point favorites on sunday. Given that they are 0-2 and coming to the Hardrock…. seems we still have some respect to earn.

  94. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – The play where Tannehill was rolling to right and the safety was coming from behind, he never saw him. I thought at first he glanced that way and saw him, but he never did, he was not aware he came around the left side untouched. I’m sure he’s not as fast, but he’s fast enough to run when he can.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah I hear ya but it seemed to me he lost a step. Not slow or anything, he can still run obviously he did it a bunch yesterday. There was a few other times I felt he would have escaped the pressure in years past. But I’ll say this, despite a few ugly plays Ryan is a gamer.

This was really my only gripe the whole game playcalling-wise. We are in FG range, and a FG seals the win. Why run plays that start off going backwards with the potential to take you out of FG range? Thankfully Tanny and Gore bailed us out of those bad calls and sealed the deal.

It was like the pop-up kickoff last week the Titans returned for a TD. Their offense was struggling and we had just made it a two score game with half a quarter left, why give them the chance to get a quick score?

These are minor things in retrospect (because we won), but these things will matter against the elite teams in the league. Good news is 2-0, baby! We are undefeated with plenty of room to get better. Been a fun year so far. 🙂

  97. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The sack where Tanny went down hard on that knee, was a real scary moment, but also a moment where you can say, OK the knee is sturdy and ok moving forward.
