2018 Season – Game 4 – Dolphins @ Patriots

This is a historical game for the 2018 Miami Dolphins.  You have to go back to September 21, 2008 (The Wildcat Game) to find a Dolphins victory in Foxboro in the last decade. Win this game and remain undefeated, and put some legitimate space between them and the New England Patriots, who were/are the favorite to capture the division crown, as per usghe.   On the other hand, it’s game 4, and coaches prefer to break up seasons into quarters, and starting off 3-1, even after a loss to the Patriots, while it would be disappointing, it’s playing .750 ball, and a nice start.  There are so many perspectives to view this matchup through, and all the same, I think it’s important to keep perspective. If the Dolphins win this game, the Patriots are not dead and buried, and we don’t get the division crown.  If we lose this game, it doesn’t put a black cloud on the season and cause us to spiral into a 3-13 season. 12 regular season games still remain

The way I choose to look at this game is I would like the Dolphins to look like they belong on the same field as the Patriots, that Adam Gase is a match for Bill Belichick, that Ryan Tannehill can be competitive in a big game against Tom Brady.  Play a solid football game, fight till the end, and if you don’t win, at least you didn’t look unprepared or outmatched.  We’re a touchdown plus underdogs for a reason, this is not a game we usually win.

We all prayed for no injuries this season after last year, and early on we were granted good fortune.  However, in the last couple of weeks, we lost our Pro-Bowl LG, Josh Sitton for the season with a torn rotator cuff, and this past week, we lost a valuable member of the D-line, DE/DT William Hayes to an ACL injury.  We have to overcome those injuries, we must persevere.  The best teams always do, and we can’t let it drag us down.  The Sitton injury affected us, we couldn’t run the ball against the Raiders.  Ryan Tannehill led the Dolphins with 26 yards rushing on 3 carries, while Gore and Drake combined for 25 yards on 11 carries.  The Dolphins did a great job of masking that deficiency last week, but we all know we have to run the ball much more effectively to stay relevant this season.

Last week with William Hayes out, and of course losing DT Akeem Spence to an ejection, really hurt our run defense.  The remaining players played well in a much shorter rotation, but it will be great to have Spence for 4 quarters, along with whichever DE we choose to promote to the 46 man gameday roster.  The 2018 Patriots don’t really have a feature back, they use a combination of RB/FB Rex Burkhead, Sony Michel and James White, with Burkhead the closest one to resembling Marshawn Lynch, who really ran over us last week.  If not for some timely trickeration, we may have come up short last week.  Not sure how you feel, but I thought if they never took Marshawn out for a breather, he might have had 200 yards.

Sooooo, on to New England. Brady gets a new receiver, and this guy is a very talented one at that.  Don’t short Josh Gordon talent wise.  Judgement wise, maturity wise, you can kill the guy, but this guy has top 10 receiver talent.  The Patriots offense has been easy to defend this year, and the Lions gave one effective blueprint last week on how to tame the Pats offense, double Gronk, and see if the other guys can beat you.  Last week they did not, but adding Josh Gordon changes that somewhat.  I don’t know how much of the playbook Gordon can absorb, or if he cares to absorb it, but when he’s on the field, he has to be respected.  Julian Edelman remains suspended for this game, so we have to cover 7/11 Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, and occasionally Cordarrelle Patterson.  I think the Patriots will use James White a lot in the passing game.  He and Dion Lewis used to take turns ripping off big chunks against us, so we have to be disciplined.  White, incidentally leads the Patriots in receptions with 14.

Ted Larsen has go to play better, and this O-line in general needs to be more physical.  We need to give Drake and Gore running lanes, we didn’t give them anything last week. Don’t expect those trick plays this week to bail us out.  We’re going have to play them better straight up, so that might mean Devante Parker getting a little more involved, as well as TE Mike Gesicki.  Dont’a Hightower is a very good LB, but he can’t run with Gesicki.  I think it’s time for Gesicki to get more involved.

On defense, we need to stay focused on James White, and Phillip Dorsett.  They will use Dorsett kind of like how we’re using Albert Wilson, in space, near the LOS, and letting him use his speed to get yardage.  Of course Gronk is main focal point, and we;ve yet to find the right personnel to limit him, but my hopes are that Minkah Fitzpatrick helps in that regard.  It would be great to have Reshad Jones back this week, he’s questionable at the moment with a shoulder injury.  This would be an ideal game to have 3 safeties in there, so here’s hoping Reshad can go on Sunday.

Remember the date,  September 30, 2018.  The day the Dolphins started a new streak of Dolphins victories in Foxboro.  I think the Dolphins are going to win this game, in a closely fought, back and forth battle.  We really show our mettle here, and the rookie kicker, Jason Sanders, after being iced by Belichick, puts through a 40-something yard kick for the game winner and huge fist-pump.

McTyer over commits and misses the tackle.

  2. son of a son of a shula says:

    Ouch

  3. naplesfan2010 says:

nice pass by Brady. Whose man was that?

  4. naplesfan2010 says:

80-0 is still only one loss.
If we are not able to come back and win this one in the 4th quarter,
we will still be in first place in the AFC East.
All that has happened is we lost to an arch rival at their place.
    Happens all the time.

    Go Dolphins.

  5. The Flying Pig says:

CBS just did me a favor and switched games

    I’m out guys

  6. naplesfan2010 says:

Injuries against us are mounting up.

  7. naplesfan2010 says:

Nice throw to Amendola in the middle for 19 yds

  8. We didn’t miss Landry until today, he always kept drives alive versus cheats for 4 years. Where is our offense today? Nobody stepping up to do something, really? Wtf

  9. naplesfan2010 says:

Nice catch by Wilson for 13.

  10. son of a son of a shula says:

    Man he’s horrible

  11. naplesfan2010 says:

Tannehill with a badly short throw.

  12. wyoming85 says:

We wait until 5 min left in the 3rd before we run our offense?

  13. Ken says:

No separation no loft on the ball

  14. Rhino says:

my laptop battery drained about the same time this team did. 😦

this game = ‘when the universe punches you in the mouth and tells you not to get so cocky’

  15. This is what we get for being too cheap to sign Landry, nobody shows up when the going gets tough here today,
sissies, where’s the Men? We look like shit

  16. bookman11 says:

    I’m on to Cincinnati

    • The Flying Pig says:

      Lol

      Me too

Put this game away and focus on next week

Got to make a lot of adjustments to that offense
We aren’t using most of the field?!?!?!

  17. New Age says:

Tannehill just isn’t good enough. Guy has around a 50% completion % today when he doesn’t have the dump offs to artificially pad his stats.

    • In years past , He over relied on the underneath safety valve We no longer have. We didn’t miss him when the weenies decided they wanted to play. We need men that want to play every week, not cherry pick weeks to slack off

  18. naplesfan2010 says:

    Gronk out.

  19. naplesfan2010 says:

    Maurice Smith puking,

  20. naplesfan2010 says:

    I hate cop shows.

  21. naplesfan2010 says:

McTyer with a good open field tackle.

  22. naplesfan2010 says:

    Minkah with a rookie mistake.

  23. naplesfan2010 says:

Raekwon with a good play on Michel.

  24. naplesfan2010 says:

ok we need our best 4th qtr of the yr here.

  25. wyoming85 says:

Run the 2 min drill all 4th!

  26. naplesfan2010 says:

3rd and 6 so they get 16 on a screen.
Why can’t we run a screen?

  27. naplesfan2010 says:

    Michel goes in untouched.

  28. naplesfan2010 says:

I said on the day of the draft that I hated NE getting Michel because he was one of my favorite RBs in the draft.

  29. Rhino says:

all we need is 4 TDs with 4 2 pt conversions, then a 5th TD with xtra point. LOL
I hope these guys get some tough as shit practices this week.

  30. So we let a 1-2 team beat us by 50 points? Wtf is wrong with these slackers today, no cajones

  31. naplesfan2010 says:

We are still running 1 yd bubble screens.

  32. Cheats have never beat us this bad in over 4 years . We have no one that can get a couple first downs, what is up with the horrible effort? Their checks didn’t clear? Overpaid sissies, everyone of them

  33. son of a son of a shula says:

    Omg he’s the worst
When he’s bad he’s soooo bad

  34. naplesfan2010 says:

So we will need a field goal, so we may as well get that here.

    wait
a guy off his sofa just sacked Tannehill.

  35. son of a son of a shula says:

    We want Oswieller

  36. I can’t believe both Wilson and Amendola both can’t do half of what Landry did. They are invisible today, and no more help than a paperweight

  37. wyoming85 says:

    I’ll tell you what!
I was going to say get the fuck off my timeline with the bullshit!

but I’ll just get off yours ok!

    • son of a son of a shula says:

Homer. We’re just pissed at this shit show. Still faithful.
      Sometimes you get wine
      Sometimes piss and vinegar

  38. son of a son of a shula says:

I was really hoping that we took a step forward. A loss in close game is understandable but this shows we’re still wannabes. It’s too bad.
    When then?
    When?

Need a gamer/baller QB. Just the way it is.

    Draft that ND quarterback 😉

  39. son of a son of a shula says:

    Minkah

  40. naplesfan2010 says:

Brady hit hard by Godchaux and INT by fitzpatrick.

  41. naplesfan2010 says:

Osweiler in and they run Gore for 2.

  42. ElephantRider says:

Landry is not the reason for this game….come on. If anything it would be worse with the 15yd penalties….

  43. Yea, at least Minkah got his first pick, I figured he would today

  44. son of a son of a shula says:

The patsies were giving up 140 something just in rushing. We have around 100 yards total offense.

  45. naplesfan2010 says:

Point to any of the 5 BS penalties the patriots got in the first quarter as the turning point in the game.

  46. bookman11 says:

Ok, time to monitor the Brewer game.

  47. ocalarob says:

what did Adam Gase learn from the Lions? obviously to not run the ball, he should have had Gore in there from the start and establish a running game, Drake can’t run btwn the tackles

  48. naplesfan2010 says:

The second team offense is driving. They are inside the patsies 30

  49. naplesfan2010 says:

Great block by young and gesicki a good run by Gore of 14. then another 5

  50. son of a son of a shula says:

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I would start Oswieller next week. See if he can get a fast start. Offense needs a spark.

  51. Wilson and Amendola should return their game checks since they went on unexcused vacations, lazy slackers

  52. son of a son of a shula says:

I’m still gonna get your helmet ice cream at the Fest Wyo.

  53. ocalarob says:

we were not in manageable situations on later downs due to the lack of production on 1st down, Drake should not be on the field on 1st down

  54. naplesfan2010 says:

HoFamer Gore catches a pass in the flat and throws off the tackler for a TD.

  55. son of a son of a shula says:

At least we didn’t get shut out

  56. olddolphan says:

GORE leads Miami’s rushers with 10 yards, per NFL Network. WOW!!
BTW, does NAYBODY think GARSE had this team ready to play football today?

  57. ocalarob says:

Forget this game, it’s an away division game, i will be happy if we split with our divisional opponents, we are now 1-1 against the division.

  58. New Age says:

    Son,

Which QBs are coming out this year and who do you like? Has Tua said anything(I know he would be top pick)? Haskins, Book, Grier, Hebert? A lot of the guys I’m mentioning are really young and probably need more seasoning.

Hey, did Tannehill watch that just to remember what a TD drive looks like?

    • naplesfan2010 says:

Honestly New Age. I think that drive was a good lesson for a bunch of players on the Dolphins offense.

      • son of a son of a shula says:

Indeed and Gore said look punks give me the ball. Oswieller played to prove something too, he did. The head first plow was nice.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

Kinda weak class. Milton balls and has a great arm but he’s small for the NFL. Lot of time left to see who might shake out.

  59. ocalarob says:

Just like a Barbershop, NEXT! I believe that will be Cincinatti

  60. naplesfan2010 says:

We were the last team to score in this game … something to build on.
Brady threw 2 picks and several other crummy throws … something to think about for the game later in Miami.

  61. The Flying Pig says:

There’s a lot of good QBs coming out this year

    Finley
    Lock
The guy from Auburn has “ham” in his name

I think it might be a good draft for qbs
Seems like there are good pass rushers too

  62. Mike E. says:

    NEW BLOG UP!

  63. ocalarob says:

Miami passed 13 times on 1st down and ran twice. What was Gase thinking? you can’t win like that

  64. ocalarob says:

SEASON AVG 1ST DOWN RUNNING (runs under 10 yards)
FRANK GORE 18 attempts 3.93 YPC
    DRAKE 14 attempts 2.39 YPC

    vs NE
    FRANK GORE
    3.2 YPC x 5 attempts

    Drake no 1st down carries

  65. naplesfan2010 says:

    check the standings.

Dolphins are in first place in the AFCEast.

  66. steveccnv says:

Retarded ending in Indy. 27 seconds left in OT score tied 4th and 4 from Indy 43, they go for it and miss. Nuke catches a pass down to Indy 15 or 20 and Houston kicks the winning FG.
