2018 Season – Game 5 – Dolphins @ Bengals

I look at this game as either the “Road to Redemption” or the “Road to Ruin”.  I can tell you from my perspective, the final score as to whether it’s a win or loss is not what will decide this for me, but rather whether we show up and play a solid game of football, a competitive game, or once again we look totally outmatched.

The Dolphins and Bengals are 2 teams going into this game at 3-1.  The Bengals earned their 3rd win in a thriller over the Atlanta Falcons, while the Dolphins were thrashed and embarrassed in the Devil’s Lair, Foxborough Massachusetts.   The good thing for the Dolphins is momentum only lasts until the next game, and the Dolphins have a chance to rectify certain things, that they aren’t pretenders, they’re for real.  The Bengals on the other hand, are riding a high, but that can be obliterated quickly if the Dolphins get the offense going.

The Dolphins made some personnel changes as recently as yesterday, cutting former 2015 2nd RD pick, DT Jordan Phillips.  The Dolphins also promoted DE Cameron Malveaux from the PS,  The Dolphins also signed OC Wesley Johnson, who started 15 games for the NY Jets last season, after signing OC Travis Swanson last week, now that former starter Daniel Kilgore is out for the season with a torn triceps injury.  At the moment, the Dolphins are evaluating a number of veteran DT’s, to fill the space vacated by cutting Jordan Phillips, but have not yet signed one.  Right now, we have only 3 DT’s, and only 3, because of the loss of  DE/DTWilliam Hayes, so we’re left with Akeem Spence, Davon Godchaux and Vincent Taylor.

The offense just didn’t work last week, and you can assign blame to Adam Gase, or credit to Bill Belichick, and both would be appropriate.  Since our offense has been predicated on speed, getting our speedy receivers in space, Belichick countered that by putting 5-7 DB’s, switching from nickel to dime to quarter depending on our offensive formation, and it completely shut down our offense.  I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that I wasn’t extremely disappointed with Gase for not having an answer to that strategy.  Still, Gase has another chance this week to get the offense going.  The Bengals have allowed 113 points in 4 games, for an average of 28.3 PPG.  That got a little bloated from last weeks game against the Falcons, who put up 36, but the Bengals have a decent defense, but not a dominant one by any means.

We all know we have to do a better job running the football.  On the other hand, I think it’s important to recognize that all those short passes at or near the LOS are truly just an extension of the running game.  Some refuse to see that, but it is, nonetheless.  The NFL is evolving, and very few teams hand off the football to a feature back 20-30 times a game.  Almost every team has a committee of running backs, and very few backs in those situations get more than 15-20 touches, and that includes runs and pass plays.  Even the teams that have elite RB’s don’t run as much as teams used to.  Ezekiel Elliott and Todd Gurley are the only premier backs that have gone to 20 or more carries at least once, and the Cowboys are 2-2, while the Rams of course are undefeated.  It’s about playing to your strengths, and unfortunately, here in Miami, our strength is NOT rushing the football.  Our O-line has already taken 2 big hits, both of our offseason acquisitions, OG Josh Sitton and OC Daniel Kilgore are on IR.  LT Laremy Tunsil has struggled with consistency, as has RG Jesse Davis and especially RT Ja’Wuan James.  Our O-line just isn’t our best asset, but we need to get it to be serviceable at a minimum.  I don’t think we can come out week after week and not run the football, that’s a recipe for failure.  We cannot be one dimensional, as NE was so kind to point out to us.

Last week’s game tipped our PF/PA into the negative side, so we’re now allowing 22.5 PPG, not bad, considering we got blown out 38-7 last week, and we’re scoring only 20.5 PPG, also off kilter due to the lopsided score last week.  Forget about all the stats, all of them, because this game our team has to show up and play competitive, physical football.  I’m not going to dwell on the Phillips release, but the team showing poorly in 2 consecutive weeks will not be boosting this teams morale, or Adam Gase’s value to the team.  We need to rebound, even if we don’t win this game, although winning it would be ideal.

Some have said Devante Parker could be the next guy to have his exodus from the team, and if you look at how little he’s been used, you would be hard pressed to notice if he was here or not.  If the Dolphins would like to extract any value for Parker, it would be in their best interest to showcase him, and hope a team might be interested when his value is higher after a good game, rather than an all-time low as it presently is.

It looks like Bengals RB Joe Mixon is not likely to play this Sunday, which leaves veteran RB Giovani Bernard as the starter.  They have remarkably similar stats in any case, but they lose the depth w/o Mixon.  WR Tyler Boyd has recently become a favorite target of QB Andy Dalton.  Talented TE Tyler Eifert is healthy (for now), and is beginning to round back into form.  (OOPS!  Eifert broke his ankle last week and is on IR)  Tyler Kroft will replace Eifert at TE.  The Bengals of course also have superstar WR A.J. Green, and newcomer, speedster John Brown.  LB Nick Vigil, who I recall some liked here, is the team leader in tackles, and they also have DT Geno Atkins.  The Bengals also have their starting OC injured, 1st RD pick Billy Price is out with a foot injury and he will be replaced by Trey Hopkins.

So which road do the Dolphins take this week, redemption or ruin?  I should have been born in Missouri (The Show Me State), because until this team shows me they can compete with a better NFL team, I just don’t see it happening.  Let the boos begin, and I hope I’m wrong, but . . .

  22. That game could have been won if we could keep a drive going. Our offense hasn’t shown up for 2 weeks straight other than a drive or two here and there

Our defense gave up 13 points today

  24. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Well…hopefully this is enough for Ross to move on from this latest iteration of fail. Who thinks we have the tools to even be a playoff team at any point in the next 4 years? Andy Reid got his team there in one year. That’s the difference in a real coach, FO, etc and what we’ve had the past 20 years.

  25. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Oh…and Tannehill is not the QB to get us anywhere. Anywhere. We screwed up not being serious about drafting a QB the past half dozen years.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hate to admit it, but it’s true. Too many concessions have to be made to help Tannehill be a is good QB. We need a QB who is special, that can carry the team. That being said, they aren’t that easy to find.

        In this day and age
        You can’t be perfect

Tannehill is athletic. No doubt, he can run, he can throw the ball. He just isn’t very smart. I want him to be successful, I’m not a hater, but he is dumb AF. Sometimes you can get by with just being athletic….and sometimes you have to be smart. I don’t think a better coach or watching more film, or any of that is going to help. I think he’s lucky a lot if I had to say anything.

  36. I doubt we have any 10 point plays to call here, it’s game over , We are 3-2

  37. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  39. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Tannehill is never going to have it especially with Gase calling the fucking plays. Running great and 3rd-2 pass incomplete just before the D stop and Grant’s return. 3rd-1 pass incomplete-we were close to scoring position on this one in 3rd qtr instead punt and the game changed from there on.

Peace & Love. Tim Knight is out!

  41. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

The play on 4th and one when he threw that deep lame pass to Stills incomplete was the changing point, 3rd and 1 around mid field and driving you have to pick up that 1st down, it’s a priority.
Tom Brady always sneaks in that situation and i don’t think i’ve ever seen him not make it. it’s their bread and butter on 3rd and 1….where’s our bread and butter?…a lame pass to Stills and give the ball right back to them at least give it to Gore on that play!

I’ve always said Tannehill was a really good athlete trying to play QB. He has the physical tools, but he just doesn’t seem to have the QB brains and those little intangible things you want. You see rookie and second year guys do things he still doesn’t do.

You could see Tannehill change that play on 3rd and 1. I don’t think he planned to throw it 30 yards, but he changed that play at the line.

  48. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

Although I’m sure most of the blame for this colossal meltdown will fall on Tannehill, in truth, the collapse of Miami’s offensive line and the high number of penalties were just as important. Miami’s total LACK of depth in the O-Line was exposed in the 4th quarter. Jeez, WHERE ARE THOSE PEOPLE who said the O-Line was fine??? BOTH MF-13 and your’s truly saw this coming during summer camp. And now the stark reality is that Miami can NOT rectify this AVOIDABLE SITUATION with the garbage that’s still available on the free agent market. Thanks to the “DOOFUS BRIGADE,” Tannehill must run for his life behind perhaps THE WORST O-LINE IN THE NFL!!!

  56. Randy's avatar Randy says:

No OL made Tannehill throw that ball. No OL made Tannehill change that 3rd and 1 play. No OL made Tannehill miss several passes early that could have extended drives. Yes, the OL struggled down the stretch with backups. But, if Tannehill doesn’t throw that moronic ball that ends in a TD, we may not be playing from behind and having to throw almost every down and putting our OL in a bad situation. But no…..Tannehill never does anything wrong that makes it harder on his OL. This loss is on Tannehill. 14 points off his arm…..for the other team.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

But the OL did make him throw that ball. He was trying to avoid the sack. It was a jail break. It causes plays like that all the time

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If he takes the sack and we punt it, that’s a better result

His head isn’t in the game – its a consistent problem

  57. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

NOW how many of you think Miami’s going to win a playoff game this season?
PREDICTION: TUNSIL won’t be the only one seeking “Bong Therapy” tonight.

  58. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Tannehill is stupid like Herd said. It’s just that simple. Guy has a WRs legs and only runs when Gase calls a QB run play. How stupid is that? I don;t know how many times he’s just thrown another terrible pass when he could fall over for a yard. He did it well during the Jets game but once the pressure hits, he goes into deer mode. Brain turns off and it’s over.

This is why Son and I are always talking about elite college QBs. Guys like Baker improvise looking for wins. Tannehill can’t do anything without a pre-made plan. That will never be good enough. Gase can’t plan for everything Ryan.

  59. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

we’re up 17-0 at the 9:25 mark, they drive and get a FG, 17-3 at 3:25 left in the third was the incomplete pass to stills. from that point on we handed the ball to Gore one time.

  60. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

You’ll go ahead and hang Tanny!
I’m sure he’ll get hit by the Bengals defensive bus on the way to the airport!

  61. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I want the better OL people to find a single NFL team that has spent as much draft capital since 2011 on OL. You won’t find one. We’ve wasted more picks on early OL prospects than any other team in the league. We can’t coach them up, so why in the world would we keep wasting the picks?

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

YOU JUST SAW WHY!!! That’s WHY we need BETTER PEOPLE doing the picking, something Ross is not willing to do.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

And that’s why I don;t want more OL until we have a different group picking or coaching them.

  62. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Baker Mayfield…..under lots of pressure….still making plays for Cleveland late in the game.

  63. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The O-line was a huge issue once Tunsil went down. I know Tannehill was under constant duress, but he shouldn’t have thrown that pass that he was trying to throw away into a crowd of players, throw it out of play. The other play where he got strip sacked I can somewhat excuse, it was from behind, but he doesn’t, and has never had great awareness. We had the momentum, and the game changed entirely on that call against McDonald, which I still think was wrong. As a defender, you make sure the guy doesn’t make the catch, and he didn’t hit the guy with his helmet, he used his hands. This is a contact sport, and I get they try to protect the receiver, but when a ball hits a receivers hands, you make sure he doesn’t catch it.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I thought it was a dumb play by McDonald

I though we made a lot of dumb plays
I think we are a dumb team and play like it

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I didn’t tape the game, so I can’t rewatch it, but the ball hit the receivers hands, and he was behind the receiver, and hit him in the back, not with the helmet, or even a vicious hit in any way, just a hit to make sure the ball wasn’t caught. That’s how I saw it.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        It wasn’t vicious
But I think the expectation isn’t t make contact on an incomplete pass
And he didn’t have to make contact

  64. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

Ex-FAU and Dolphin kicker George wins the game for the Browns in OT with a knuckleball FG!

  65. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Ken,
I agree there was a lot of heat on that play, but Tanny still made the decision to throw it. He could have….and should have….just taken the sack or thrown it away…..not into a mob of bodies. The only way that play turns horrible is if Tanny tries to throw it….when his body was sideways to the LOS and had to throw it across his body to boot. He made a negative play much worse.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Agreed. The first breakdown was the O-line, but Tannehill compounded the issue by throwing into a crowd of bodies. I can’t be sure what he was thinking at that point.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Fair enough. I think it was more of fluke bounce but I get what you are saying

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

And when you factor in that we were deep in our own territory and trying to protect a lead – it’s just a momumental bonehead decision by Tannehill

  66. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – Was McDonald there late? If not, how would he know it was incomplete or not?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t think he was late

But I think he could have avoided contact
And I think he new thr wr didn’t catch the ball

The league is really soft these days
It’s not a crazy call in lieu of the way games are called these days

It wasn’t a blatant late hit
But the contact could have been avoided

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

I think it was close and the receiver was going upp for the ball so not sure McDonald could tell if it was incomplete or not. He was committing to hit the wr before he could see it was incomplete I believe especially at the speed of play.

  67. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s very possible that we will be in last place in the AFC East by season’s end.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I was just about to post this. With all the injuries and the usual collapse, I’m revising my 8-8 to 5-11. We have winnable games against the Texans, Colts, Bills, and Detroit. We should win 2-3 of those games but we are collapsing incredibly quickly. I could see another loss next week sending us into a season ending spiral. It’s the Bears and Mack so I expect a loss too.

  68. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken – I remember the replay, he just hit the receiver with his hands, as he jumped into him, but not helmet contact. I wish I could pull up a video of it.

    GUYS… guys, guys, guys…

Our patchwork O-Line did Tannehill in, in the end, today.

So many of y’all really think I’m a Tannehater… NOT THE CASE. No, he isn’t a QB who is EVER going to be able to carry a team on his back… but he doesn’t suck, either. Today, he tried too hard to make something happen in the 4th quarter, in the face of Defenders running all but unabated by our O-Line. Thus, I cannot pin this loss on Tannehill. YES, he made POOR decisions late in the game… but that’s also why he’ll never be a top-10 QB in this league. And it doesn’t help Tannehill that our O-Line is a perennial stinker.

Do I ‘LOVE’ Tannehill: NO! Do I ‘HATE’ Tannehill: NO! But he’s shown that he can be quite efficient enough to take us where we need to go.

Methinks our O-Line (and by extension, both Tannehill and our RBs) played VERY WELL for the better part of 3 quarters. But once Tunsil went out under concussion protocol, Tanny was fucked… as was our running game.

Once our starting O-Liners go down, we go from ‘A’ to ‘D-‘. That’s NOT the case with a great many other teams in this league.

I CAN tell y’all this… Tannehill needs to have near perfect protection from our O-Line for him to succeed… as is the case with our running game. There ya have it.

WHY — I ask — do we ALWAYS have problems with our starting O-Linemen going down over the past 15+ years??? What is that about???

  71. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

If Tannehill is checking out of a run play on those 3rd and shorts all the time then he needs his ass checked but believe this is something between him and Gase which is not a winning combo right now.

  72. Randy's avatar Randy says:

The McDonald call is why I don’t like the NFL as much anymore. Go outside and run full tilt at someone and then, at the last minute, try to hold up. It’s simply not as easy as it sounds. I think he could have hit him a little less but that should never be illegal. Defenders are being asked to play passive and that sucks. It’s not football.

The O-line was a huge issue once Tunsil went down…
    ————
Let us ALL be honest: our O-Line was a HUGE issue, even before Tunsil went down.

I DO hear what you’re saying, that within 3 quarters of this game today, our O-Line actually looked good! But we must not pretend that our O-Line wasn’t a problem BEFORE Tunsil went down: just look at what the Patsies* did to us last week, for example, without Sitton and Kilgore.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not really sure how much more we could have done for the O-line. Our starting LG and OC went down with injuries. We had a former starter Ted Larsen step in, and while he isn’t great, he’s not awful. Then our THIRD OL gets hurt, I mean, what do you do? If we drafted a guy in the 4th, and he sucked, you would all say we should have drafted a guy in the 3rd or earlier. Baker showed up today, we needed a fast LB, and we got one. The 2 offseason OL acquisitions got injured, it sucks, but it is what it is.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Again, I ask: WHY do our starting O-Linemen always go out for the season so early in Miami??? This seems to be a ‘thing’ over the course of the last 15 or so years for us. I don’t suggest to know the answer… it’s just CRAZY! Joe Robbie Curse???

  76. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MF13,
Take a look at the OL play around the league and you’ll see we are pretty typical. Put in 3 backups and what exactly do people expect? Adjust how you call the game to help them out. Is that so difficult? Lol

There’s a fine line between hitting reset too soon and waiting too long

We should have a better sense of when to do it by now…lol

  78. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Gase has “his guys” now. Too bad they suck. Lol

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s not entirely fair at all Randy. Things just started to get ugly when Tunsil went down. We were not only in this game, but leading 17-3.

  79. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The real problem in parting with Gase now is that he parted ways with so much talent while he was here

  80. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    mf13,
Stop running from shotgun constantly. Run the ball more. Go max protect. Adjust your routes. There are things Gase can do, but he’s not.

  81. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – I can’t answer that question, but if we didn’t have bad luck, we wouldn’t have any luck at all. Even if we drafted an OL in the 2nd RD, he would have gotten hurt too. It’s just unbelievable.

  82. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
This offense hasn’t played well for 3 games…..or 3 years. I’m not feeling fair right now. Lol

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I get it. Sports can be so frustrating. All my teams suck right now, I should probably find some different interests.

    With this, I AGREE.

  84. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – I think Tunsil will be back FWIW, it was just a concussion, if you can say “just” a concussion these days.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Bro, these concussions of today — under NFL protocol — can either be day-to-day, or week-to-week. It’s too early for any of us to assess the significance of his head injury. I think we’ll know more about it come Wednesday’s injury report, man.

  85. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I do think we need to draft a QB early. I firmly believe there’s no reason at this point to pay Tannehill $26M next season. He’s not worth it, he’s not the guy. It’s a damn shame, but he’s not.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Not at all. He sucks and we should stop pussyfooting around that. Sorry guys but it’s a fact. Trust your eyes.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The 5 INT’s added to what I believe is 4 lost fumbles is just too much.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

WELCOME to my club. And I’ve NEVER said that as a ‘Tannehater’, but rather, what if Tannehill doesn’t come back 100% this year? We should have drafted a QB in this past Draft, IMO.

  86. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

27-0 in the second half and the defense only gave up 13.

That ND Quarterback is 2 years away unfortunately.

  87. The team is cursed, they desecrated sacred Seminole land for profit.
How effective is the curses, hard to quantify, but I believe there is some power, and it could feed off the teams futility

  88. Randy's avatar Randy says:

MN/PHI game. Both OLs playing crappy. Both teams considered SB contenders.

I think there’s a very good chance we’ll be drafting higher in 2019 than last year, or at worst about the same.

  90. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Notice how they stuffed Faulk on IR just so we wouldn’t clamor for him as the weeks go by. Bye bye that is.

  91. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Now we average UNDER 20 pts a game. Ain’t working.

  92. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If tannehill wants to stay here in 2019 and we draft a rookie an high – I’m all for it

I don’t think we can pay him 26m – but I think given the rookie salary cap, there’s room to work with him

He may not want to move at this point in his career

  93. We should have drafted a QB 5 years ago IMO. The tannelovers yelled at Me for saying that, but

We just keep trying to get this one to work out.
Sometimes there is hope, but reality rears its ugly head, and We realize the errors of past drafts and player moves , are holding us back.
Not selecting a top quality QB prospect since RT, not enough OL, and trading up for DT3, Jordan, and Carroo.
Overpaying Pouncey and Suh, and we didn’t keep or replace our Prolific move the chains slot receiver.
Amendola and Wilson have been spotty
part timers. And RT misses his safety valve that disguised RT flaws. and the failure to replace him means our offense can barely stay on the field and keep drives alive by converting first downs.
We need consistent offense, with consistent players, and yes, consistently good coaching and front office

  94. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Did he even complete a fourth quarter pass?

  95. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Sonny – I don’t think there’s a conspiracy with Falk. Heck, Osweiler may be the QB as soon as next week if the offense continues to struggle.

  96. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think Jerome Baker had a BREAKOUT game today! HELL YEAH!

Yet, I still would have drafted Mason Rudolph as our 3rd round pick last year.

  97. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Silver lining

    Thought the DTs played well

  98. RT is way overpaid, he hasn’t proven he is worth that much.
We should explore if anyone wants to give up a draft pick for him, and try to use it to move up high enough in the first to get one.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Never gonna happen. They LOVE him.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Tannehill is only making $8.7M this year. Jarvis Landry is close to making DOUBLE what Tanny is this year. Just sayin’…

    • RT made 19 million last year, and We had to pay Cutler 10 million because RT couldn’t play a down
29 million dollars for nothing! At least Landry produces EVERY week and is even helping the shitty browns win
We don’t need Landry to get first downs, but

we need someone, Wilson and Amendola aren’t doing much at all, and the losses from offensive futility are piling up quickly
