2018 Season – Game 5 – Dolphins @ Bengals

I look at this game as either the “Road to Redemption” or the “Road to Ruin”.  I can tell you from my perspective, the final score as to whether it’s a win or loss is not what will decide this for me, but rather whether we show up and play a solid game of football, a competitive game, or once again we look totally outmatched.

The Dolphins and Bengals are 2 teams going into this game at 3-1.  The Bengals earned their 3rd win in a thriller over the Atlanta Falcons, while the Dolphins were thrashed and embarrassed in the Devil’s Lair, Foxborough Massachusetts.   The good thing for the Dolphins is momentum only lasts until the next game, and the Dolphins have a chance to rectify certain things, that they aren’t pretenders, they’re for real.  The Bengals on the other hand, are riding a high, but that can be obliterated quickly if the Dolphins get the offense going.

The Dolphins made some personnel changes as recently as yesterday, cutting former 2015 2nd RD pick, DT Jordan Phillips.  The Dolphins also promoted DE Cameron Malveaux from the PS,  The Dolphins also signed OC Wesley Johnson, who started 15 games for the NY Jets last season, after signing OC Travis Swanson last week, now that former starter Daniel Kilgore is out for the season with a torn triceps injury.  At the moment, the Dolphins are evaluating a number of veteran DT’s, to fill the space vacated by cutting Jordan Phillips, but have not yet signed one.  Right now, we have only 3 DT’s, and only 3, because of the loss of  DE/DTWilliam Hayes, so we’re left with Akeem Spence, Davon Godchaux and Vincent Taylor.

The offense just didn’t work last week, and you can assign blame to Adam Gase, or credit to Bill Belichick, and both would be appropriate.  Since our offense has been predicated on speed, getting our speedy receivers in space, Belichick countered that by putting 5-7 DB’s, switching from nickel to dime to quarter depending on our offensive formation, and it completely shut down our offense.  I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that I wasn’t extremely disappointed with Gase for not having an answer to that strategy.  Still, Gase has another chance this week to get the offense going.  The Bengals have allowed 113 points in 4 games, for an average of 28.3 PPG.  That got a little bloated from last weeks game against the Falcons, who put up 36, but the Bengals have a decent defense, but not a dominant one by any means.

We all know we have to do a better job running the football.  On the other hand, I think it’s important to recognize that all those short passes at or near the LOS are truly just an extension of the running game.  Some refuse to see that, but it is, nonetheless.  The NFL is evolving, and very few teams hand off the football to a feature back 20-30 times a game.  Almost every team has a committee of running backs, and very few backs in those situations get more than 15-20 touches, and that includes runs and pass plays.  Even the teams that have elite RB’s don’t run as much as teams used to.  Ezekiel Elliott and Todd Gurley are the only premier backs that have gone to 20 or more carries at least once, and the Cowboys are 2-2, while the Rams of course are undefeated.  It’s about playing to your strengths, and unfortunately, here in Miami, our strength is NOT rushing the football.  Our O-line has already taken 2 big hits, both of our offseason acquisitions, OG Josh Sitton and OC Daniel Kilgore are on IR.  LT Laremy Tunsil has struggled with consistency, as has RG Jesse Davis and especially RT Ja’Wuan James.  Our O-line just isn’t our best asset, but we need to get it to be serviceable at a minimum.  I don’t think we can come out week after week and not run the football, that’s a recipe for failure.  We cannot be one dimensional, as NE was so kind to point out to us.

Last week’s game tipped our PF/PA into the negative side, so we’re now allowing 22.5 PPG, not bad, considering we got blown out 38-7 last week, and we’re scoring only 20.5 PPG, also off kilter due to the lopsided score last week.  Forget about all the stats, all of them, because this game our team has to show up and play competitive, physical football.  I’m not going to dwell on the Phillips release, but the team showing poorly in 2 consecutive weeks will not be boosting this teams morale, or Adam Gase’s value to the team.  We need to rebound, even if we don’t win this game, although winning it would be ideal.

Some have said Devante Parker could be the next guy to have his exodus from the team, and if you look at how little he’s been used, you would be hard pressed to notice if he was here or not.  If the Dolphins would like to extract any value for Parker, it would be in their best interest to showcase him, and hope a team might be interested when his value is higher after a good game, rather than an all-time low as it presently is.

It looks like Bengals RB Joe Mixon is not likely to play this Sunday, which leaves veteran RB Giovani Bernard as the starter.  They have remarkably similar stats in any case, but they lose the depth w/o Mixon.  WR Tyler Boyd has recently become a favorite target of QB Andy Dalton.  Talented TE Tyler Eifert is healthy (for now), and is beginning to round back into form.  (OOPS!  Eifert broke his ankle last week and is on IR)  Tyler Kroft will replace Eifert at TE.  The Bengals of course also have superstar WR A.J. Green, and newcomer, speedster John Brown.  LB Nick Vigil, who I recall some liked here, is the team leader in tackles, and they also have DT Geno Atkins.  The Bengals also have their starting OC injured, 1st RD pick Billy Price is out with a foot injury and he will be replaced by Trey Hopkins.

So which road do the Dolphins take this week, redemption or ruin?  I should have been born in Missouri (The Show Me State), because until this team shows me they can compete with a better NFL team, I just don’t see it happening.  Let the boos begin, and I hope I’m wrong, but . . .

19.8 and trending down. Not good.
I know some of you are pissed at my negativity but I’m sorry and even though 50 years of watching football doesn’t matter our quarterback still sucks. Bad.

  8. And where is Parker, the guy drafted before Landry? anyone seen Parker today? What a colossal waste of a first round pick, this is why We struggle, we don’t draft well, and can’t seem to keep good help either. Even Phillips is a question mark, We have to do a mid season cut on him?
Even all the injuries, and the defense looking gassed today bring up questions.
There is something wrong with our coaching and front office, and it’s showing on the field

Hyde had an article about our terrible drafts. Add in coaches that can’t seem to get the best out of what we have. Our WRs are lackluster. Our OL injured or lackluster. Our QB is retarded. Our defense is our best aspect but top coaches like Belichick destroy them.

If people think it’s too soon to reset, why? I don’t see where there has been any progress from last year. Where is the progress? Our offensive genius HC has one decent offense in three years. Our coaches can’t work with tough talent and we keep giving them away. No one drafts well and when we do, we let them move on. The team is always dysfunctional and we are headed to another losing season fast.

  13. I like the Minkah and Tunsil Picks, but most of the other first round picks of the last decade suck, guys like
    Harris
    Jordan
    Parker
    Tannehill

  14. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I’m no fan of Tannehill but I don’t blame this on him, if he audibled out of the stills play from a run to pass then that’s on him, other than that he should have protected the ball better but he was being pursued at the end on every play.
if i’m Gase it’s all right to audible but not to a drastic point being we need 1 yard for 1st and call a running play, he should not be able to go away from the run..maybe and audible in a different direction but not change the whole damn play and throw it deep, if that’s the case he should just call his own plays.

  15. I do blame RT, it’s the QB responsibility to protect the ball

And when you factor in that we were deep in our own territory and trying to protect a lead – it’s just a momumental bonehead decision by Tannehill

Yes! You always hear about the lack of pocket presence, but it’s more than that….situational awareness is just as important. This is what we have with how many years of him learning from the ‘Quarterback Whisperer’!? Puh-leeeze! How did he get that label? Because he coached Peyton Manning? Good grief…if was Peyton f-ing Manning. He didn’t have to do anything.

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – I don’t blame the game on Tannehill at all, but I do realize unfortunately that he isn’t the guy. He needs far too many things to align to win, he can’t lift this team. He’s not a championship caliber QB. He’s due $26M next year, that’s close to championship type money, so I’m afraid it’s time to draft a QB early.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I was pretty close at CIN 30 – MIA 16 , yay for me. lol

  19. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Draft or sign a QB next year, move Tannehill to receiver…I hear he might be good at that. If we have to pay him….then he needs to earn it doing something. I don’t see anyone else wanting him and you’d have an emergency QB on the roster.

  22. D's avatar D says:

Tanny cost us that game plain and simple.

When tunsil went out, sure it got worse but for fucks sake if you are going to try to throw the ball away don’t do it into a group of people and throw it at their heads, maybe at least try their feet or in that case take the sack. He doesn’t know when to do what when he is pressured and it fucks us all the time.

Personally I think Herd hit the nail on the head. It’s kinda what I have been saying about him when I finally decided to stop making excuses for him.

He had more than just the two stupid plays those two are just monumentally stupid and directly gave them 14 points. You really can’t even come close to pegging the OL on the last one because he was out of the pocket and throwing without anyone on him. The guy is not a QB between the ears

Gase also has made some really stupid play calls. In fact on on 3rd and 1 I saw them in shotgun and was like oh fuck here we go again. I do think one of the the 3rd and 1’s were audibled we were lined up in a running formation and Tanny barked out a pretty long set of calls to not be switching something. I can be 100%, but I’d assume he audibled.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I disagree, when tanny got stripped they were rushing 5 and the RT got beat, Tanny was rolling away from the pressure and it caught up to him.

on the helmet bounce he was trying to get rid of it and again our LT got beat bad, he was moving away from that pressure and it just took a dumb bounce off a helmet.

it’s easy to say what he should have done after watching the play, it’s different live.

we lost because we went away from Gore. plain and simple

  23. D's avatar D says:

Lock from Missouri, Stidham from Auburn, Grier from West Virginia, and Finley from NC State are going to be more likely available to us though.

  24. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    well something went right today????????????

  25. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Mike the last 3 games he’s had no run support, he had a little today then they went away from it, not to mention the make shift OL, when he threw the pick they were rushing 7 players, our LT got beat bad and Tanny was able to manuever away from him but the onslaught of rushers was too much, he tried to dump it but it took an unfortunate bounce, on the last take away they rushed 5 we had 5 blockers the RT got beat bad, tanny tried to run away from the pressure and throw but the rusher caught up to him.

this game was lost because we went away from what works, GORE!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You can’t “dump it” into a crowd of defenders, throw it to the sidelines out of play. That was just wasn’t a good play by him.

  28. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

for those who say we can’t run due to the OL, well Gore was tearing it up early.

  29. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Totally agree with ORob’s analysis

  30. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    ORob,
Minnesota hasn’t been running the ball well at all. Their OL has been a big issue. Cousins and the passing game has been their whole offense. You’re getting a little crazy with your run the ball take. While I agree we go away from the run….been saying it for years, you need balance. Neither phase of our offense has been good.
    ***
And I said when it happened that Tanny audibling into a pass play on 3rd and 1 was a turning point. He definitely changed the play. QBs all across the league are making plays under pressure. It’s how the NFL is nowadays.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I dont follow minnesota currently, watched a little of their game today but i know last year they were a top running team with over 500 rushing attempts which is what i based my statement on. we’ll see how they stack up at the end of the year

as for my position on miami running the ball just run it and you won’t hear a peep from me

  31. Randy's avatar Randy says:

And the game was lost because Tannehill gave the other team 14 points. Simple as that. Not because we didn’t run the ball.

  32. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    ORob,
I watched the game. One player making a bad play isn’t the fault of another player making a bad play. Tanny should have just taken the sack. It was a completely moronic play to even try to throw the ball on the pick 6…..regardless of what the OL did. Totally stupid play. When he scrambled and got hit from behind, I fault him a little less on that, but it’s clearly on him because it was his inability to maintain ball security after the protection broke down. That’s his job. He didn’t do it. What the protection did or didn’t do is irrelevant. Are you saying that any time anything bad happens after protection breaks down its the OL’s fault? That’s ridiculous. His INT. His strip sack or fumble…..whatever they called it. Both on him. Both led to points for the other team. And, he made both plays deep in his own territory….bad place to lose ball security.
    ***
Yes, we should have stuck to the run….you’re hardly the only one who’s been asking for that. But, that had nothing to do with those two plays. It didn’t make those two plays happen. Tanny did.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

You realize statements of what Tannehill should have done are hindsight,

if we would have stuck with Gore we would not have had that rush.

the guy always picks up yardage, he has yet to be stopped and we dont use him.

you don’t like Tannehill I get it but this loss was due to coaching error not Tannehill.

  33. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

If any thing can be pinned on Tanny maybe he should learn when to just take the sack when the pressure’s that immense, in that situation it would have been much better than giving them 7 easy points. however hindsight is 20/20

  34. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    ORob,
You do realize everything we say around here can be considered hindsight, right? Lol

    • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

I was thinking the same thing…like we should have stuck with Gore running….isn’t that hindsight too? lol

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

running the ball is a philosophy, saying Tannehill should have made a different decision in the heat of the battle after you have watched the play is hindsight, but thanks for asking.

  35. I agree with Rob and also would like to run the ball more, ESPECIALLY once we had a 17 point lead, wtf
Isn’t that a perfect time to run the ball? Up 3 scores on the road?
We could have used more time on the clock, got more first downs and TOP, and took some of the heat off RT by running the ball.
RT didn’t toss a pick and fumble on running plays, those were passing plays.
We have 2 starting RB and a capable backup RB, and underuse them, today it cost us a win, we should have won up 3 scores if We managed the game correctly

  36. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    situational football,
you are driving close to midfield and have 3rd and 1 late in the 3rd Quarter with a 3 score lead, your RB is gouging their D and you throw it deep and then punt!

first of all you should have a play in your playbook to pick up 3rd and 1 every time, 100% effective! it’s called a QB sneak.

The Rams were up by 2 deep in their own end 4th and 1, game on the line with no time and they ran it picked up the yard and went into victory formation. if they are going to run that play in that situation it must have great odds.

Ive watched Brady do it a 1000 times and have yet to see him stopped!

My question is why don’t we have that play? or maybe some other play with a high % success rate?

at that point had we picked up that 1st down and kept pounding Gore we would have won that game.

if Tannehill audibled that’s on the coach as well, there should be a limit to what he can do, in that situation you get the 1st and continue the Gore attack.

Hindsight my ass…he’s a 6 or 7 year vet….if he hasn’t learned that by now he is stupid AF….and he is.

  38. I’m not a fan of deep oases on third and 1, especially when up 17, it’s time to grind it out on the ground and get some first downs and maybe a play action pass or short dumpoff here or there to keep defenses honest

  39. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Orob,
I actually commented on that third and one play when it happened and it was crickets on the blog.

  40. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’m not sure but I don’t think Tannehill wanted to throw the ball deep. It look like he wanted to throw a short little pass out to the flat but the player got hit in the backfield and couldn’t get out there. Then, Tannehill regrouped and threw it deep

    • In years past, Landry would have helped there
But it seems like just because Your prolific slot receiver is gone, We should and need to find something else, besides just chucking it deep.
I would have been fine with a running play in that situation, bring in extra TE and go for it

  41. Remember when Gase would bring in 3 Tight Ends ? And
run the crap out of the ball, throw short passes to Landry, and occasional over the top to Stills.
We seemed to have direction and purpose, stayed on the field, scored points, and we were in games as long as our defense showed up.
What is our offense now? Who are We, and where are we going? Better get some answers, because bears are coming to Miami in a week and the season could slip away if we can’t find an identity on offense

  42. CINCINNATI — Adam Gase says the Miami Dolphins’ massive fourth-quarter meltdown began when they lost left tackle Laremy Tunsil to injury.

In Tunsil’s absence, a comfortable 17-3 Dolphins lead became a 27-17 Cincinnati Bengals win. Tunsil was later placed in the concussion protocol.

    • All the more reason to bring in 3 TE and run it. This loss is on Gase, He didn’t make needed adjustments , and later says We lost because We lost Tunsil?
Sam Young needed some help, an extra TE, he obviously couldn’t do it alone

If only Gore had the ball, Tannehill wouldn’t have the chance to make retarded decisions like throwing in crowds of people Whn your QB is so bad, the best excuses are to take the ball away from him and limit his ability to screw you…it’s time to fin a new QB.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I highly doubt they get rid of Tannehill within the next 2 years, we would take a 13.5 mil cap hit getting rid of him next year and who do you replace him with?

get use to it, he’ll be the starting QB for the next 2 years it would appear.

and FTR i don’t want to take the ball out of Tannys hands, I just want him to have run support to open up passing lanes and slow down the rush.

we played a great game for 2.5 quarters, then we reverted back to the team that played the pats last week.

if they are smart enough to use Gore more than they have been usjng him we will contend and from the start of todays game that’s what it appeared to be then all of a sudden no more Gore with a quarter and a half left, he only had 1 run in that span

      • SMH, I’m getting burned out on this team, they overpay for losers like Pouncey and Tanny, classic underachievers, and won’t pay for record breaking WR,s..
We bring in an OL guru, who isn’t, I don’t know why Phil was brought in, and Gase isn’t the QB whisperer either.
We suck at drafting, treat first round picks like they aren’t important, and we get rid of Quality players,to avoid paying them, and overpay free agents that can’t or won’t perform. We trade up for the worst players, DT3, Jordan, Carroo, and we don’t have enough picks left to make up for it. This leaves us with needs on the OL, WR, DL, LB, and other positions.
We all hope Miami would revert to years past glory, but everything is wrong with this team. It’s a shitty no class organization not worthy of respect

Congrats Landry, You set another NFL record yesterday, most catches in 5 seasons, with 11 games left. Many Dolphin fans forgot Your accomplishments, and are happy with Parker, who also set a record with most splinters in his ass from the bench.
I’m happy Landry got paid his worth, even if it came at our loss, because He is on a team that’s focused on getting better. I never thought Cleveland would or could be a better franchise than Miami, but now it is.

We can’t get first downs or stay on the field because We don’t make the commitment to draft, train, develop, and retain what it takes to have a successful offense.
We drafted and overpaid RT, how shortsighted was that
We drafted and overpaid Drug dealer Pouncey, who was always injured or out selling drugs,
We gave a broadcast booth guy 10 million dollars to play part of a shitty season.
We gave Matt Moore 3-4 million a year, for What?

We drafted Parker, holy hell he dude is hot garbage, not worth any draft pick at all.
His 2 catches this season are so important we needed this guy in the first?

I haven’t even addressed all the defensive screw ups, first round sissy Troy Vincent,
Missing in action Raekwon McMillan, the trading up for Jordan fiasco, overpaying Suh so much We ruined our cap, and for only a short term rental.
I’m sure I missed plenty, but,

Is it any wonder this team sucks? It’s because the FO and coaches suck, the organization sucks, and doesn’t have any achievable goals .

OD is right, sell the team Ross, it’s just an investment to Him, He doesn’t care if the team wins or loses, and doesn’t know how to win if He did care.

I don’t know why I watch the shitty ass Dolphins look like dog shot sisssys on Sunday’s when the fishing has been so good.

I won’t attend or support Miami anymore, they don’t represent Me, or the state of Florida, and barely look like they represent an NFL team

Well, that wasn’t easy to watch. Another self-destruct from our team. No surprise there. What with trying to stop beating ourselves, trying to beat the opponent and complying with an ever more ludicrous NreFL, there isn’t a lot of fun watching the Fins anymore. Hope this “team” (I use the word loosely) can somehow pull off a win for the Fest at least. The season will seem less bad then, but my hopes of sneaking into the play-offs have been totally vanquished. Like our Fins the last two weeks.

About Landry, he’s a great possession rec but he’s not elite and the reason why he’s not elite is because he’s not fast and can’t get separation on deep passes, he’s limited to dink and dunks, Albert Wilson is a better slot rec than Landry. he wanted elite money, i think it was wise moving on from him.

as far as the other players you’ve mentioned, the draft is a crap shoot you’re bound to get bad picks.

NFL talent is pretty much equal across the board, what separates good teams from bad teams is that 6 inch field between the HC’s ears.

Mack has as many sacks as the Dolphins do, 5. Phillips had 1, and Hayes had 2, so what’s left has 5, and who knows if Wake will even be able to suit up, and he has 1 of the 5.

  66. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Tanny had a bad day. It happens. The OL had a bad half. My concern is that this whole offense is just not good enough to win against good teams (yes the schedule matters) or do anything IF we were somehow to get into the playoffs. The defense is improving and has some nice young players. You can’t say that about the offense right now. It’s stagnant, old and just plain bad.
    ***
And the shitty part is that it seems like every week some new passing record is broken because the league has bent over backwards to give the offense every possible advantage….especially the QB position….and we aren’t taking advantage of it.

  67. D's avatar D says:

Stanger i agree it a good quality to have a player who owns their fault in something, but Herd is also right, him owning it doesnt help us in our QB situation if he isnt improving on it. It would be like a roommate that got wasted all the time and come in and shit in your bed. Sure he is sorry for it once he sobers up and realizes what he has done, but it doesnt really change the fact he shit the bed, and it doesnt change the fact that you know he is going to shit the bed again at some point.

I really wanted this year for Tanny to be out of the whole shit the bed situations, but here we are again and we may get 3-4 games of good moving forward and then he’s going to shit it again. We need to be moving on so we can start the process of getting someone in here that can lead us the way our offense needs to be led.

I saw Robs post about he’s not going anywhere, but truthfully next year we save enough cap space cutting him its not out of the picture, but i do admit it probably wont be this year or next unless there is a trade involved. Still we can invest in a new guy next year, regardless of the Tanny situation and we can bear through the next year with a guy in the wings to take over afterwards. Getting Minkah and him panning out as well as he is, im still ok that we didn’t take a QB early, but it really is forcing us into a situation to where the 2019 draft needs to be 1st round QB, and no acorn hunting. We still have a lot of season left and to be honest i dont care how the rest turns out, because it will not change the fact that ultimately, Tanny isnt the guy and we need to start looking again for that person.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was only trying to say he is a good guy. And will stand by that. Even think he can be an OK one, don’t think he is or can be a great QB either. So maybe we do something. Can’t see us spending the cash for a Cousins though Could see us putting a first into a QB though. And yeah with the restructure, think Tanny is with us next year unless some trading goes on.

It is disappointing that Gase was supposed to be an offensive guy, an innovative guy, yet we rarely seem to explode offensively. It’s frustrating.
    ——————————————–
Mike we have gone through multiple OC’s and HC’s. We have tried to put the right WR’s around him, the right offensive weapons, etc. I do feel like Gase is not really opening up the offense but im not 100% sure its not on Tanny and trying to get him going early by hitting some high percentage passes to build up his confidence. I think this handicapps us and makes us go away from running game, etc.

There definately are other factors at play, but if i was distributing the blame, id put a big helping on Tanny followed by a big helping on Gase. The OL, sure, down 3 starters is hobbling but we werent doing shit on offense before that was true. Our OL was rating out as one of the best before Tunsil went out and Tanny looked only good in spots of time, but never put a full game of good together. There needs to be no more excuses for Tanny, he has blame here, and specifically the last two games, he has a lot of blame.

So bad we don’t even need an opponent to lose

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The “why” is confounding. Like D said, is it Gase trying mask Tannehill’s deficiencies, or Gase just outsmarting himself? I mean we were tied in that game, and it seemed like the one thing that was guaranteed to be a weakness once Tunsil went down was the passing game, and yet there we are dropping back like everything is cool, and the announcers are pointing out how the Bengals smell blood in the water, and Gase keeps chumming? Did that not make you say WTF? I never want to play “not to lose”, but the Bengals had a huge advantage with Tunsil out, and Gase set us up for failure by letting them have at Young, who wasn’t up to the task, but I see that as Gase fucking up, not Young

      • D's avatar D says:

I agree, Gase could have and should have played it safe with the calls once Tunsil went out. He should have went Jubo, and stayed in Jumbo and just ran three times and punted if thats how it had to be. It would have been more likely to have prevented at least 14 of those points from happening. I have no doubt that some of the shit thats happeneing are poor Gase decisions, but i do think the potency of the offense has a huge limitation in Tanny. I dont think we see consistency in production as long as he is out QB. We will likely get a couple really good games, a great gam and a couple real stinkers then start the cycle all over again.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Shows you how good Tunsil is and the difference between him and Young who is not a LT.

      • D's avatar D says:

I wanted to draft a OT specifically for this reason and for the reason that we only signed James to a 5th year option and have not extended him. Its not like i was thinking Tunsil would get hurt, i just do not think very much of Young. He doesn’t look the part of a OT, he kinda Gumby looking out there, he doesn’t seem to have a good form to his blocking and he moves really clunky. Tunsil is very elite in both of those ways too so its not hard to spot the differences, but i wasnt sure why they felt Young was such a great option as out swing tackle.

  73. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The strip sack from behind was hard to blame entirely on Tannehill, he correctly stepped away from the pressure, and couldn’t have seen the rush coming from behind, but it ultimately falls on him regardless.

    • D's avatar D says:

You have to be aware, and away from the pocket it should be easier to be aware. The only footsteps you hear arent your guys lol. He MUST protect the ball and he just doesn’t do that. I get that, and it’s happened at least twice this year. I don’t why some guys seem to have that sixth sense, and why some guys don’t, but Tannehill definitely doesn’t seem to have it.

  75. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think we need a QB early, DE early (RD 1 and RD 2), and then a DT, from RD 3 on. We also need an OL, probably in the first 4 rounds too.

    • D's avatar D says:

DE and DL are pretty deep in this next draft.

QB is kind of like last years, it not fully proven talent but there are a bunch at or about the same talent level. So you could get a 1st round guy deep in the first, but you may have to let him cook a little, at least wait a few games or for something to happen before you bring him in.

      OL is a decent group.

Id probaly go QB, OL DT/DE, DT/DE in the first 4 and i think you could get starters at all those positions with the first 3 and a guy who could at the very least come in and contribute in a rotation with the 4th. Id probaly do DE and then DT 3rd and 4th, but it just would depend on what was available.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Depends where we are drafting
But I wouldn’t be upset if end up with a QB and as many as 3 OL before the 4th round is over

In terms of DL if we are picking early there will be good ones that will be hard to pass up

I don’t out adding a WR if Parker and Carroo continue to Disappoint or adding a RB but I would try to find one to add to the mix on day 3

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – IF Parker and Carroo continue to disappoint??? Stick a fork in those fuckers, they’re DONE!!!

  76. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – Usually the best pass rushers (DE) are gone by RD 3. We can’t wait on that, Wake may be gone next year, Branch should be too, so that leaves Quinn, Harris, Woodard and Malveaux?

    • D's avatar D says:

It depends on the depth of the draft. I think With Harris and Quinn, you have your two primary pass rushers. Woddard can reprise the Hayes role, which we should get him back next year too. Malveaux has looked pretty good as well, and he is a hayes run stopping type so we have a good 4 man rotation, we just need to add a guy semi early that can play into the rotation.

      • D's avatar D says:

There are several guys who are overachievers that will be pushed down into the 4th rounds that are going to be solid contributors. Wyoming has a guy on his college team thats going to be an under the radar prospect. Jaylen Ferguson from LATech is another. I think there are some sneaky good players at DE this year that are being pushed way down because they dont have the big school attention, but they have a good skillset to build off of.

  77. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Isn’t it a little early to be talking about the draft?

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

One thing about Tannehill is he’s a stand up guy. He took the blame and said it was on him about 4-5 times at his presser. He said he didn’t want to take a 9 yard sack so he thought he was making a smart play by throwing it away but in hindsight it ended up being a dumb play.

    • D's avatar D says:

I have 0 problems with his character and integrity. I really want to like him as our QB but about the time i think things are moving in the right direction again, he strings together two really awful games. To be honest the first 3 weren’t that great either, but it felt like he had command of the offense. A lot of players fail a lot worse than he does as far as their draft status, but IMO i dont think im going to look at him like or franchise guy ever again, because him putting it all together just isnt happening. Great guy wrong position. He probably should have gone into the draft as a WR, he probably would be having a very standout career right now.

  79. D's avatar D says:

Its early to talk draft, as there are a lot of things that still need to transpire to have a good idea of what we need in the draft and whats available. Still when you have games like the last two, its easy for things to be over, and just not to want to even think about the next game or the season, so you start looking for new hope, and thats what the draft is to a lot of people. Its a chance to get a player like Minkah, and Minkah has been one of the lone bright spots in this season. It just helps take the edge off the disappointment.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

True and as bad as the two losses were the last two games the one hope we can hang onto is that in 2016 we were 1-4 and still made the playoffs. Of course you don’t feel like that will happen at this time, but it’s not impossible. 3-2 is still a viable record.

But right now we all feel so defeated that only some wins can erase that feeling. The team has got to go out and do it. I personally don’t have it in me as a fan to discuss much about the team other than wait and see.

Another positive note is Jerome Baker looks like a player and McMillan looks solid as well.

  80. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I wonder if Gase is considering yanking Thill and giving Osweiler a shot?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      He said no on that.

    • D's avatar D says:

If he does i think it will be to keep him healthy and try to trade him by trade deadline, otherwise i would expect he would just keep rolling with him. He could also try to send him a message by benching him, but i dont think Tanny would be the kind of person to respond well to that. He is almost too accepting of things for that to light a fire under him.

  81. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Look at the bright side..the defense played great only giving up 1 offensive TD to a team who avgs 30pts a game.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah they did and down a few players too.

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah i thought the defense looked really good. DB’s were hounding their WR’s even Green, though getting a few big catches wasn’t overly involved in that game and his bigger catches was him being a really good receiver and finding holes in the zone.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Getting Rashad Jones back was huge, he’s the one that tipped that pass for the Alonso pick

  82. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    • D's avatar D says:

Im thinking 4th especially if he really shows out at combine, your other guy, Ghaifan, he probably is a 5th or 6th. I could see us going after him too because he has the side to be a hybrid DT/DE which is kinda what we seem to be looking for these days, or at least we want to have them as well as the pass rushers.

  84. D's avatar D says:

Jones is probably the most complete safety in the NFL. There might be better hitters, there might be better ballhawks, but im not sure there are as many as versitle and such a complete package at the position as him. Im really glad we still have him around with the addition of adding Minkah, because Minkah has tohe potential to be that same kinda guy, and is closer to being there already that Jones was when he first started. Learning and watching Jones could make Minkah one of the best ever. Those are two players i hope we always do our best to retain.

I think they just had them over-evaluated before. Stidham to me has alwas been a guy who has all the tools but he still needs some work. I think he is workable though, he seems to be a coachable kid, but he needs a year of NFL study to really be ready no matter how he cloases out the season, he wont be ready to be a day 1 player. Lock is closer to a day 1 player, but he has to iron our some consistency issues. He has the potential to be a Mahomes type player if developed right, but just like Mahomes i think it would be better for him to sit a year. Hebert probably is the only one that if you threw them to the wolves might actually come out ok. He compares a lot to me like Baker Mayfield but with a better arm and size. Stidham is probably a Rosen type player without just less refined.

I’m losing faith in Tannehill. But I doubt we’ll see a change at QB this year.

    • D's avatar D says:

With Falk going to IR i do too. I think if they were at a give up point and Falk was healthy, they might would have seen what he could do, but i dont think there is a real reason (outside what i said above about saving Tanny for trade deadline) to make a move this year. Also depending on how we address the QB situation next year, we might not make a move the either.

Next year the cap savings we get cutting or trading Tanny as a pre-june 1st move is 13mil, the dead cap hit is 13 mil. So despite the fact its 13mil dead money the net will be 13 mil additional cap space. I think that doesn’t preclude a move in the offseason if things dont work out. It could be that we are keeping Osweiler and Fales both because of the potential for that to happen. Then they draft a guy and let him cook, or if he shows up in PS you let him roll. They seem to be in the position to keep or cut or trade to me. I believe Gase will keep going with Tanny for sure, but i also dont think its going to be a complete shocker to me if something different happens either.

  88. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – If Tannehill’s play continues like this, I wouldn’t be shocked if they sat him for Osweiler, although that move would just be about this season, and not for the future. I think there’s a very high probability that Tannehill is gone next season.

    • D's avatar D says:

When it comes time for them to figure out the cap next year that 13mil is going to be staring them in the face. If we fail to make the playoffs, and even worse, have a losing record, i can see a reboot button hit on the QB situation and i can see them recomping that cap space in order to add to the OL or something else. OL is one of the better positions to add in FA since the past few years what the college has been feeding into the NFL has been hit or miss, even in the first round.

    • D's avatar D says:

We have Davis at RG and Larsen at LG, which i think are servicable. Davis held his own against one of the best DT’sin the league until second half of the game. I actually didnt think he did a particularly bad job overall. I was worried about that matchup and even had dais that was one of the ones to watch out for before the game, and you didnt hear Atkin’s name hardly at all in the first half. When they made adjustments to send more pressure from A gap blitzes, thats when Davis inexperience showed and he got overwhelmed.

      • D's avatar D says:

We should have counter with our own adjustment to release the TE into the zone vacated by the LB’s and burned them on a couple of those blitzes, and made them play honest.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

We essentially have 4 backup OL starting. We need a lot more than a RG

We need a better swing tackle, OC and LG. Im pretty satisfied with Davis, and Larsen is pretty serviceable at LG. If we had a better LT we could stabilize it and stop the bleeding at least. Its not optimal but thats the wound that needs immediate triage.

Major props to Davis in that comment.

Wyo, Giants fans would laugh at you for asking if Flowers might upgrade that spot.

Larson was Dunlap’s bitch in the 4th!

Dunlap was over Young. Tunsil had him shut down all game. I remember one play in particular, Tanny had held on to the ball forever and a day and Tunsil was mirroring him and Dunlap could nto get around him.

Cyrus Kouandjio is available, former Saban player. I wonder if Gase would bring him in on a look.

I think Baker, Minkah and Taylor have all shown promise. Godchaux has come back to the pack a bit, but he’s also shown he’s an NFL player. Harris and McMillan have both been pretty unnoticeable most of the time. But, we have some nice young talent on defense. Keeping them is another matter, but there is something on which to build.

We have those young guys for a few years before we have to worry about keeping them.

    • D's avatar D says:

Godchaux is playing good complementary foorball and he has been making plays and or plugging the gaps and forcing the runner back towards others. I think he has played really well. McMillan and Harris both have made plays they just arent racking up stats. I have seen McMillian have some rough games but he is a really young guy playing a complex position as out MLB. He is going to take a little time to get really going, but i think he is doing pretty well overall.

Crazy that the two FA we picked up to solidify out line both are out for the season lol. Seriously that couldn’t have been story-boarded more dramatically.
