I look at this game as either the “Road to Redemption” or the “Road to Ruin”. I can tell you from my perspective, the final score as to whether it’s a win or loss is not what will decide this for me, but rather whether we show up and play a solid game of football, a competitive game, or once again we look totally outmatched.
The Dolphins and Bengals are 2 teams going into this game at 3-1. The Bengals earned their 3rd win in a thriller over the Atlanta Falcons, while the Dolphins were thrashed and embarrassed in the Devil’s Lair, Foxborough Massachusetts. The good thing for the Dolphins is momentum only lasts until the next game, and the Dolphins have a chance to rectify certain things, that they aren’t pretenders, they’re for real. The Bengals on the other hand, are riding a high, but that can be obliterated quickly if the Dolphins get the offense going.
The Dolphins made some personnel changes as recently as yesterday, cutting former 2015 2nd RD pick, DT Jordan Phillips. The Dolphins also promoted DE Cameron Malveaux from the PS, The Dolphins also signed OC Wesley Johnson, who started 15 games for the NY Jets last season, after signing OC Travis Swanson last week, now that former starter Daniel Kilgore is out for the season with a torn triceps injury. At the moment, the Dolphins are evaluating a number of veteran DT’s, to fill the space vacated by cutting Jordan Phillips, but have not yet signed one. Right now, we have only 3 DT’s, and only 3, because of the loss of DE/DTWilliam Hayes, so we’re left with Akeem Spence, Davon Godchaux and Vincent Taylor.
The offense just didn’t work last week, and you can assign blame to Adam Gase, or credit to Bill Belichick, and both would be appropriate. Since our offense has been predicated on speed, getting our speedy receivers in space, Belichick countered that by putting 5-7 DB’s, switching from nickel to dime to quarter depending on our offensive formation, and it completely shut down our offense. I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that I wasn’t extremely disappointed with Gase for not having an answer to that strategy. Still, Gase has another chance this week to get the offense going. The Bengals have allowed 113 points in 4 games, for an average of 28.3 PPG. That got a little bloated from last weeks game against the Falcons, who put up 36, but the Bengals have a decent defense, but not a dominant one by any means.
We all know we have to do a better job running the football. On the other hand, I think it’s important to recognize that all those short passes at or near the LOS are truly just an extension of the running game. Some refuse to see that, but it is, nonetheless. The NFL is evolving, and very few teams hand off the football to a feature back 20-30 times a game. Almost every team has a committee of running backs, and very few backs in those situations get more than 15-20 touches, and that includes runs and pass plays. Even the teams that have elite RB’s don’t run as much as teams used to. Ezekiel Elliott and Todd Gurley are the only premier backs that have gone to 20 or more carries at least once, and the Cowboys are 2-2, while the Rams of course are undefeated. It’s about playing to your strengths, and unfortunately, here in Miami, our strength is NOT rushing the football. Our O-line has already taken 2 big hits, both of our offseason acquisitions, OG Josh Sitton and OC Daniel Kilgore are on IR. LT Laremy Tunsil has struggled with consistency, as has RG Jesse Davis and especially RT Ja’Wuan James. Our O-line just isn’t our best asset, but we need to get it to be serviceable at a minimum. I don’t think we can come out week after week and not run the football, that’s a recipe for failure. We cannot be one dimensional, as NE was so kind to point out to us.
Last week’s game tipped our PF/PA into the negative side, so we’re now allowing 22.5 PPG, not bad, considering we got blown out 38-7 last week, and we’re scoring only 20.5 PPG, also off kilter due to the lopsided score last week. Forget about all the stats, all of them, because this game our team has to show up and play competitive, physical football. I’m not going to dwell on the Phillips release, but the team showing poorly in 2 consecutive weeks will not be boosting this teams morale, or Adam Gase’s value to the team. We need to rebound, even if we don’t win this game, although winning it would be ideal.
Some have said Devante Parker could be the next guy to have his exodus from the team, and if you look at how little he’s been used, you would be hard pressed to notice if he was here or not. If the Dolphins would like to extract any value for Parker, it would be in their best interest to showcase him, and hope a team might be interested when his value is higher after a good game, rather than an all-time low as it presently is.
It looks like Bengals RB Joe Mixon is not likely to play this Sunday, which leaves veteran RB Giovani Bernard as the starter. They have remarkably similar stats in any case, but they lose the depth w/o Mixon. WR Tyler Boyd has recently become a favorite target of QB Andy Dalton. Talented TE Tyler Eifert is healthy (for now), and is beginning to round back into form. (OOPS! Eifert broke his ankle last week and is on IR) Tyler Kroft will replace Eifert at TE. The Bengals of course also have superstar WR A.J. Green, and newcomer, speedster John Brown. LB Nick Vigil, who I recall some liked here, is the team leader in tackles, and they also have DT Geno Atkins. The Bengals also have their starting OC injured, 1st RD pick Billy Price is out with a foot injury and he will be replaced by Trey Hopkins.
So which road do the Dolphins take this week, redemption or ruin? I should have been born in Missouri (The Show Me State), because until this team shows me they can compete with a better NFL team, I just don’t see it happening. Let the boos begin, and I hope I’m wrong, but . . .

Why does it matter first down versus other downs? Their yards per carry and total rush yards are similar and Drake has done more in passing. Two good backs.
It matters a whole lot, if you have 2nd and 9 you will most probably pass making your offense predictable, at 2nd and 9 the odds are much greater that you will be unable to pick up the 1st down. failing to pick up 1st downs puts fatigue on your defense.
on the other hand an avg of 2nd and 6 the odds are much greater that you can pick up the 1st, the fact that you are able to plow out an avg of 4 yards on a 1st down carry makes your offense unpredictable on 2nd down, the opposing d can not let you run all over them so they will bring help up exposing their secondary.
OROb — just don’t think we are that team, but did love how they got Gore going up the middle on Sunday. Stuff was going on. But power running game we will not be overall, least not with what has happened on the OL.

I disagree, it’s about keeping defenses honest and not having them in max pass protection because we can’t run the ball early in downs making long down and distance difficult to pick up the 1st, trickling over to our D due to the fatigue of always having to be on the field.
It’s a domino effect thru out the whole team.
Drake has no business being in there on 1st down, the way to use Drake is get him in space, stop trying to pound him up the middle.

Clearly he has his own most particular view on what needs to get done. I’m not even sure how one finds the stats to calculate first down run average for a player while removing ones over ten yards. Either some website don’t know of or a lot of dedication to his point.

Drake runs more stretch plays than Gore who has always excelled as an inside low to the ground type runner. Gore has been stuffed on 1st down as well. It’s about execution, not that Drake can’t run on 1st down. You also say it’s about keeping defenses honest. Well if you never run Drake on 1st down then teams already know it’s a pass. It really is silly.
Drake is not a between the tackles RB, he can not run up the middle on 1st down and be productive, if you don’t get it i certainly can’t help you comprehend.

I am a big fan of running the ball. No disagreement there. But, it’s not just about 1st down. What if you get 4 yards on first down…run it again and lose a yard? EVERY down counts. Yes, get 4 yards on first down, and you’ve taken the first step. But, if you aren’t successful on every down, it won’t matter. Hell, as I’ve said before, get just 3 yards a carry on first AND second down, and you are in a very manageable 3rd and 4. YPC averages out pretty evenly throughout the NFL. You’re gonna get around 4 yards a carry…give or take. The bigger issue is that you can’t have all these negative plays. Then, you get a bunch of incompletions on second down throws after a 3 yard or less run on first down, and you’re in a tough third and long again. Even if you could average 5 yards a carry throughout the season, which is very good, you are still in a longer third down situation.

Maybe Gase doesn’t believe that you get rewarded in the running game as the game goes on. He gives up on it by the second quarter, and we never get a chance to reap the benefits as the game goes on. That’s my biggest issue on this topic. Stick to it. Those 2 or 3 yard runs turn into bigger runs later in the game….but we never run it long enough to find out.

I kinda disagree. Even if you aren’t getting good results from the running game early on, you need to stick with it. You cannot give up on it. It’s funny because you never hear people say to stop throwing it after a few incompletions. A 2 yard run sucks, but it’s still better than an incompletion! Lol
Randy, I also disagree that Gase always stops after the 2nd quarter. Remember I’m a proponent of the running game and not a fan of shotgun which just about every team runs more than not. But if it’s not working, just like any other plays that aren’t working, you’re still punting. It’s about execution. Always has been, always will be.
I’m still reeling from yesterday’s come-from-behind defeat. All I heard at work today was, “What is going on with your Phins?”. And all my fellow Phin fans have already thrown the towel in on our season. I just shook my head all day, unable to offer any excuses nor solutions.
I must admit, I’m getting tired of…
1) Everything having to be almost PERFECT in order for Tannehill to thrive.
2) Having a poor running game and running all the time (see the Philbin years: 3rd and long, running play). Then having a great running game, and barely running at all (see the Gase years: 3rd and short, passing play).
3) Our O-Line always losing key starters every year.
4) Bubble-screens.
5) Blowing sizable leads.
6) Our inability to play consistent football, week in and week out. We win in chunks and lose in chunks.
7) Being mired at a collective .500 over the course of the last 7-8 years.
8: Never having adequate, quality depth on the O-Line: the falloff from starter to backup is absolutely astronomical.
9) Some kind of BS, off-field issue. It hasn’t happened YET this year, but continue to stay tuned…
10) This franchise letting all of us down, year after year: we haven’t been in a Super Bowl since the ’84 season.

I respectfully disagree on that one point. We seemed to pass the ball often, even before the bizarre 3 PASSING-play turnovers (2 INTS, 1 lost fumble). We should have been trying to bleed the clock with running plays. Though I do get it, we can’t run EVERY play, such as in 3rd and long sits… gotta move the chains to keep the clock ticking.
I DO agree that we needed to pass the ball once the Bengals took the lead, later in the 4th quarter.

It sucked!!! I still can’t believe what happened. Once Tunsil went down the Bengals went “46” defense on us and we couldn’t handle it.
I thought we passed the ball when we lost Tunsil, and the Bengals were using odd formations to take advantage of a weak left side, and played right into their hand. That bothered me.
All is not lost, however. We’ve got a VERY solid Defense, as we all witnessed yesterday: 10 points yielded all day. If we can build on that (yes, we can), we’re still relevant… so long as our Offense doesn’t screw our Defense, as happened yesterday.
We can’t score. All IS lost. Shame too cause that’s going to suck the life out of this team then it will get real ugly.
If the Offense can’t clean up it’s act, you may be very right.
You’re right, we dug ourselves out of a bigger hole in 2016 in Gase’s first season at 1-4. At the end of the day we’re still 3-2. I know confidence is low right now and that’s natural but an NFL season has ups and downs. Let’s see how we deal with it.

Let me ask this? So we’re all praising our defense for playing well most of the game. How about the Bengals defense being good too? Are we supposed to just say our offense stinks and the Bengals defense can’t compete. We were beating them in the game but by no means does their defense stink. All games are different. We all know the Vikings have good personnel on defense yet they are not having a great season thus far. We get a sack or make a play on defense and it’s our guys are great. When the opponent’s defense does it we grill our offense. Do we mock their offense when we do it? Not that I see. Except for Drake taking out Lawson on that chip. LOL
There’s a difference between being a good defense, and Cincy has a good defense, and being given gifts.

Believe it or not, I see that in every game I watch, I hate it but that’s how the league plays these days. We’re not the only ones. When a team makes it nobody talks about it.
Tim i was also one of few who did not have a problem with Tannehill trying to ground the ball when it took a really shitty/weird bounce .. some shit just happened, and for sure Cincy D gets paid to stop us and they ramped it up in late 3rd and kept the pedal to the metal
He misses too many throws that kill drives. It’s constant. Except the few and I mean few times we actually do put a drive together. With better passing and the same play calling we could easily be putting up close to 30 every week.
We also have to overcome a shit ton of pre snap penalties which are not his fault.. dont get me wrong he is not blameless, but not 100% of our offensive failures are on him alone ..
You wish that was the case, not sure that would be the case. Penalties, bad routes and dropped passes are still relevant as well. We convert and it comes back. We make a play on defense to get a stop on 3rd down and there’s the flag. All of that adds up. It’s not all about #17. And no he’s not great and can do no wrong.
That last pass on third down on our very first drive is a prime example of what I mean. It was wide open. Then we punted instead of at least getting into FG position.
Adam Gase WILL ride or die with Tannehill… that’s not only cliche’, it’s REAL.

That’s pretty much what I saw, too, in watching the game live. We throw it MAYBE 2-3 times deep per game. That’s not enough to keep 8 out of the box, nor to keep defenders from playing press on the short dink-and-dunks we throw 95% of the time.

If you don’t execute the plays, what does better mean? Just as our defense stopped a 30+ point offense most of the game, does the CIN defense get any props for the same? It was a low scoring game in nature. Grant made a huge play at the end of the half on STs to make a 7-0 game 14-0. The debacle at the end was a shocker, but before that did we ever think our offense shit the bed? Some games are like that.

Hey I definitely think Tannehill needed to have better ball security, but what incredible bad luck that those balls fell right into the hands of their guys instead of just falling as incomplete like those types of passes do 90% of the time and THEN the Red Sea parts and BOTH guys have clear paths to score.

He had little support otherwise. Anyone who watched him play knows that. Brady is considered the GOAT. Not in that era princess. You’d be nothing. Lawrence Taylor and others played in that era and yes they would have been allowed to throw you around like a rag doll. 17 years as the best pure passer of all time when defenders could knock you around. Today, you’re pretty close to touch football. Not even a comparison.
Dan Marino destroyed old school records before it became patty cake nonsense with QBs. I have friends who hated him and the Dolphins back when it was happening. Now they say Marino is better than all of them. That guy made throws I never saw before and still don’t today. Except for may Aaron Rodgers. And I agree.

in the play where juwaun james was beat, it appeared that tannehill was very deep in his drop creating a better angle for the defender to get around james.
He does it all the time, he drops back too deep in the pocket, and he also steps backwards as a first instinct to escaping pressure, and not up in the pocket. Stepping backwards, espeically when you are already deep in the pocket is a really bad mistake.
Miami was running with an uhbalanced line where tunsil and james lined up on the same side of center, i didn’t catch that in the game.
I saw it when they had Young in, i didnt see them do it with Tunsil.

Taylor has definately imoproved and i agree with you he made Phillips expendable. If you put Taylor’s character (or Godchauxs for that matter) intho Phillips physical frame and ability, that would be a destructive force. Too bad all that talent is wrapped up in a apathetic human being.

I dunno, i dont think all losses are ugly, they all suck but they arent all ugly like the last two. The last two literally showed we are posers, our 3-0 record (which a lot of us already didnt feel great about those wins) was a mirage. We have reset the belif in this team back to square one and we now are at game 6. To really feel better about these two losses our next few wins cant feel like we backed into them.

I dont think anyone here really disagrees with your discussion about running the ball, just that Drake isn’t a viable RB. Gore definitely has a better style for splitting small creases in the line. He runs very low and is hard to tackle in a congested space. He is also better about pushing the pile, but i, and a lot of others dont think that means Drake is not a good back to have out there on 1st downs. Im all for Gore being the starting back and the grind it out back, but you cant have a guy as dynamic a play-maker as Drake not on the field. It just doesnt make sense. I really wouldn’t mind to see more two back sets, split and power formation, and i definitely want to run more, and its mostly because i dont think Tanny will ever be able to win games with his arm. Too many things have to be perfect for him to play well, so our best bet is to take the burden of winning a game off of him.

I wonder how Ajayi will be after this ACL injury. The guy had had awful knees to begin with, this can’t help things any.
When we drafted him that was my concern. He was a helluva steal in the 5th, but there was always that when is the first injury going to be his last one. I hope he recovers from it but the dude didnt have any cartilage and now he has blown out his ACL. The ACL keeps the bones from pivoting on each other and the tibia and fibula in the right positions. Sounds to me like this is going to really complicate an already bad situation with that knee. Less stability to keep the knee in the right spot so it wont grind = more grinding = a lot of pain and diminished mobility.
Id like to see double back formations and not just with Drake and Gore, id like to see Wilson and Grant back there a bit too. The could mix up the pairing and it would really confuse defenses since they all kind of have different skill-sets but at the same time they share a lot of skills as well. You could run pass and run out of the same formation which really fucks with a defense, and you could have uber protection packages if you wanted to by keeping both backs back for blocking purposes.
We could also run double TE with double backs as a Jumbo, and if we wanted to get more passes out of that formation we just have to motion players out wide, could be a back or a TE or both. What we keep lining up every week isnt working.
I think going forward, especially if Tunsil is out, double TE formations would be ideal. I don’t know much about O’Leary, but they trust him more than Smythe. He definitely has more experience. Not sure how long Derby is out. Tannehill seems to be a little more comfortable throwing to Gesicki, so that should continue to grow.

Maybe, but i had heard that Brees had also expected to be drafted by Miami and was excited by it, so he might have decided to do it. Taxes and all that stuff too. Louisana has a pretty high income tax rate.
The second chance to sign Brees i can understand it. They had Dr’s and those doctors advised them there was risk to signing him. The thing i am bothered by was us passing on him in the draft, especially after hearing that tweet yesterday that said the director of scouting was all in on him and calling him a once in a decade talent. Thats just arrogance drafting away from what the top guy in the position you hired him tells you is a once in a decade talent.
Imagine Drew Brees paired with Chris Chambers, who we drafted in the second round.That would have been Duper/Clayton/Marino type pairing.
D, I think Payton being a QB/offense coach probably would have trumped all of that. Saban being a defensive coach and not the most personable guy. Just my hunch.
If Tunsil doesn’t play Sunday Zach Sterup could be the LT with Young remaining as the swing guy. It’s kind of scary that we get the Bears defense after that debacle of a loss.
The Bears are also the top run defense allowing just 64 yards PG.

We might have to go big and stay committed to the running game even if it’s not working so well. We cannot let the Bears defense pin their ears back all day. It kind of sucks but we might need to play safe on offense and hope the defense and STs can make some plays. This is not a good matchup for us especially at this time.
