2018 Season – Game 6 – Bears @ Dolphins

The Dolphins looked like they answered the call against the Bengals.  The defense played a very good game, really limiting the Bengals offense.  The Dolphins shut out the Bengals in the 1st half, leading at the half 14-0.  Talk about a tale of 2 halves, Ryan Tannehill completed 12 of 18 attempts for 114 yards and 1 TD, in the familiar short passing offense.  All was well for the Dolphins, even through the 3rd quarter, although I thought they were a couple of plays that gave the indication that the wheels were ready to come off the tracks.  The first was the ST’s hit by Martell Spaight, which at the time when the flag went up, I nearly lost my mind.  It was a completely legal, legit hit, and I thought they flagged it for a late hit out of bounds, but it turned out, after the hit, Spaight was jawing at the Bengals returner Alex Erickson, and was flagged for a 15 YD unsportsmanlike conduct.  That was #1.  That moved the starting field position from the Bengals 14 yard line to the 29, big difference, especially after the Bengals struggled for 3 QTR’s.

Number 2 was just a few plays later, the Bengals were at midfield, and Dalton threw a short pass to TE CJ Uzomah, and Uzomah had to go up for the ball, and Dolphins safety T.J. McDonald came from behind and hit Uzomah a few milliseconds after the ball went through his hands.  It wasn’t a vicious hit, McDonald contacted Uzomah with his hands first to his back, but he was leaping into the player, and then he eventually knocked the player to the turf, but not in a dirty way at all.  That was called for the 2nd unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for 15 yards, and in my mind, that’s where the unraveling started.

The Bengals went on to score a TD on that drive, 30 yards of Dolphins penalties, which ended with Dalton hitting RB Joe Mixon for an 18 yard TD to start the 4th quarter.  Then the real scary stuff happened.  Grant returns the kickoff to the 19 yard line, and Gore on 1st down is stuffed after a 2 yard gain.  2nd and 12, Tannehill is sacked by DT Geno Atkins for a loss of 8, the ball now at the 13 yard line.  Tunsil was injured at this point, and he was replaced by swingman Sam Young.  Tannehill found Drake in a short pass over the middle, and Drake picked up the 1st down gaining 18 yards.  At the 31 yard line, Kalen Ballage got his first carry of the game for 2 yards, and then IT happened.  With Sam Young struggling to block anyone really, and the Bengals sensing the weakness there, they overloaded the right side, and sure enough there was immediate pressure on Tannehill as soon as he took the shotgun snap, and he attempted to roll right, and there was additional pressure from that side as well, and Tannehill inexplicably while attempting the throw the ball away, threw it low and it hit the helmet of RG Jesse Davis, and caromed into the waiting hands of DE Michael Johnson who returned the INT for a TD, which tied the game at 17-17.  No excuse, that was a terrible play by Tannehill, who could have thrown it to the sideline out of bounds.

I’m not going to bother giving the blow by blow any further, I can sum it up with Sam Young couldn’t block anyone, The Bengals had all the momentum, and we don’t have a QB that can rise above everything and bring us back.  Ryan Tannehill is not the problem, but I now believe he is not the answer.  We’re not an explosive offense, we can’t put 40 points on a team, and the way the NFL has evolved, I think you have to.  Too many things have to be aligned just right in order for Tannehill to succeed, and I think we’ve tried and continue to do just that,  but in this league, the QB has to have that confidence, that killer instinct that I think Ryan Tannehill doesn’t have.  He’s not a terrible QB, he’s just not the type of player that can lift his team, and I’m certain this will be his last season as the Dolphins QB.

This week can be extremely ugly, facing the #1 defense in the NFL, very likely without our starting LT Laremy Tunsil.  The Bears are allowing the 2nd fewest points per game, 16.3, which is pretty close to what we score per game at 19.8, good for 28th out of 32 teams in the NFL.  Sounds like a recipe for disaster.  The Bears incidentally, are scoring 27.8 PPG, but that’s a little skewed due to the 48 points they hung on TB before their BYE week.  Rookie QB Mitch Trubisky threw 6 TD’s in that game, but the 3-1 Bears don’t really score like that consistently, and they don’t have to with that defense.  The Bears probably send fruit baskets and flowers to Jon Gruden weekly for trading Khalil Mack to their team.

This is a game we have no business winning, and yet for some reason, I have a feeling we hang around in this game, and possibly even win it, just because it makes no sense.  No prediction this week, who cares anyway.  It’s bizarre to look at the NFL standings, and see the Miami Dolphins there at 3-2, 1st place AFC East.  I think about Jakeem Grant and how much more important he becomes each week, and then conversely, I think about Devante Parker and how close people are to saying “Who?” when you say his name.  Are 1st RD Dolphins WR’s cursed?  Yatil Green anyone?  I think about the defense, and realize that this is probably the last year for Cam Wake, and I get the feeling he doesn’t have that storybook ending here.  Shame, he deserves it, but I think maybe father time has finally reined the big boy in.  I think about the young players we have on defense that are coming on, Jerome Baker, Minkah who started out great,  Raekwon who needed to shake off some rust after being out last year, Xavien Howard, who is a top 10 CB,  Vincent Taylor who keeps on getting better and Davon Godchaux too.  Add in good ole Bobby McCain too.  I guess what I’m saying is, draft a QB in the 1st RD next year, there are some really good young pieces to build around.  Next year, always next year.  I know, I know, we’re 3-2, probably soon to be 3-3, but we will win the Fest game, because . . .

Rashaad Penny Oct 10 12:50pm ET

Seattle Seahawks rookie running back Rashaad Penny, the team’s first-round pick, played zero offensive snaps and just one snap on special teams in the Week 5 loss to the Rams. Seattle has rediscovered their ground game with an NFL-leading 473 yards in the last three games, but Penny has not been very involved. He has 29 carries for 92 yards through five weeks and is behind Chris Carson and Mike Davis. Head coach Pete Carroll called Penny “rusty” when he made his return from a broken finger in Week 1 against the Broncos. Penny lost valuable developmental time at the end of training camp and now he’s buried on the depth chart. He could get his chance, but now it might take an injury to either Carson or Davis for that to happen. Penny is only a stash candidate in dynasty leagues for now.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m holding on because I do think at some point he will show his value, but it might not be this year, or if it is this year, it might be later on because of an injury, or maybe he just gets a shot for more playing time.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I won’t be protecting him for next year anyway as I have Gurley and Kamara. I need guys who can produce this year for byes or potential injuries. I have Drake too but so far he’s not had the season I thought he’d have.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They shouldn’t rush Tunsil back, and I doubt they would do that. He’s too important going forward to take a chance putting him out there if he’s not healthy enough.

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim, I’m weak at RB in that league, so I need him, and I need him at the least to become a RB1 on his depth.

  18. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I think this is a winnable game at home. I think it would be more of a toss up on the road. Yes, the Bears have a pass rush, but there are ways to combat that. Amendola needs to get about 30 targets. I don’t think we can assume we can run on them, as they are very good against the run. I know everyone is worried about the pass rush, but we may need to rely a bit more on the passing game against this defense. Quick….very quick…throws.
    ****
Frankly, I think the only way we win this game is if our defense plays really well and/or Chicago just has a bad day. Maybe they’ll be rusty and sluggish coming off the bye!

Randy, good points about the game plan against the Bears. I said yesterday I think we should go big formation and max protect more than we would normally do. Nice job Mike.. 100% agree on where the game went bad and that Ryan was trying to do the right thing.. he honestly did not have time to hit sidelines on the 1st Bengals Td ..

If we can contain Mack, we can win this game, then Post fest we will be sitting pretty at 5-2 .. my 13-3 forecast looking tough but we can still make playoffs .. Ride the DST and cut back on a couple eerors and dumb penalties, get Ashat in for Young or Larsen and lets do this !!! Go Phins !!

This time next week i will be sleeping in Miami.. woohoo

  43. Can’t believe anyone can still defend the loser quarterback that Tannehill is. HE lost the game for the team. The team didn’t play poorly and the team didn’t lose the game. He is the one who had the ball in his hands and he is the one who didn’t do the right thing with the ball. Cutler saw pressure on a pre-snap look and got the ball and immediately threw it at the ground. He didn’t wait to be surrounded by four guys and try to make a stupid play with it he just got rid of it and lived to play another down.
We’ve seen this type of bullshit from Tannehill in the past but it’s not his fault. Right? Keep it up with the ridiculous narrative. The guy had 6 touchdowns and 5 interceptions and if you want to live in fantasy land about the two handoffs you do it but that’s all it is. His numbers are worse than they are at any time in his career but, again, none of this is his fault, right?
Gase was the qb whisperer, the offensive genius and now he’s shit because now we have another HC who doesn’t know how to use Tannehill’s skills. Right?
Stop with the nonsense already and see this guy for what he is and give it up already. You’re in denial and that’s all there is to it. It can’t always be the coaching staff, the offensive line or someone else’s fault. Comes a point in time where you’ve got to take off your Tannehill goggles and see him for what he is. NOT GOOD.

  44. If you’re a TRUE fan of this team you should be absolutely PISSED right now that they didn’t draft a franchise qb in either of the last 2 drafts and now we’re stuck with the poser. Seriously, this team owes every fan a huge apology for not doing anything to solidify the quarterback position. Would a rookie being doing any better than Tannehill right now? Maybe, maybe not. But, when a 7th yr starter is playing like a rookie there’s a problem.
At least when you have a rookie and you can build with him and you know that, going forward, the offense will continue to improve because you now have the right guy back there you are in a better situation than being handcuffed with a guy who just can’t get it done.
If this team doesn’t draft a qb in ’19 it deserves to lose half it’s fanbase.

    • D's avatar D says:

Im not pissed, but i have been asking for us to draft a guy like that for years. It to me isnt fully abotu replacing Tanny as much as it is about making sure we have a answer if he gets injured, or if he winds up regressing and needing to at least kicked in the ass to get his shit together. At this point, im really going to lose faith we ever figure out shit out if we dont at least make an attempt to improve that position by drafting a guy in the first in 2019. I dont care if they have to sacrifice a few picks or future picks to trade up to get that guy either. Pull your dicks out and show us you still know how to use them FO.

LOU; While I’m VERY disappointed in Miami’s quarterbacking, I’d have to say that the truly OFFENSIVE LINE shares a big portion of the blame, as does the group of penalties. Long as M13 was going Dobson Flies….. how about the Gypsy moth. They came strong when was growing up. Walk back from the school bus was like a horror movie.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I had some a bunch of years back, was killing my tree. They’re invasive sonofaguns. We had to burn them out

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

They only come so often, different hives with different pop out times, but when they come they are to miss….both when you have a mess of catapillers and when they go moth. In btwn they go larva and eat off the roots of trees…..and slowly kill them.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I remember a raid of them back when I was a young teen.

    • D's avatar D says:

We have lots of these during some of the months.

We also have the gypsy moths, they eat the shit out of apple tree leaves.

  71. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I don’t think they’d do a Viatai trade at the moment?

  72. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was once walking my dog as a teen as well and I saw some big flying creatures that looked like huge dragonflies. Then when we were walking around the brush I noticed there was hundreds of them on the plants. They were looking at me with just as much interest as I was looking at them. It was awesome.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I had a praying mantis right above my back yard doors a couple of weeks ago It was more brownish than green, but it was cool.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Praying mantis is the best friend for your yard you could ever have. Eats all the bugs you don’t want. House I grew up in we put mantis eggs in.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, yes they are very violent in the insect world. It is wild that they will look at you with interest. They blend right in with plants. Once I noticed one I started seeing the others. It was so cool.

  73. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I remember as young child, maybe 5 or 6, being terrified at all the worms that came out on the sidewalks after or during the rain on my way to school. They were just littered everywhere. Not sure if it’s still that way, but as a kid it freaked me out. Especially when someone told me there were certain worms called bloodsuckers, I was scared they were going to leach on to my foot and suck all of my blood out. LOL

These never frightened me, not in the least. As a kid, I allowed them to crawl all over me… it tickled! But the thing that’s YUK about them? When you step on them, they explode with green slime.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not that was scared….. but that is what infestation looks like. Turn them to humans rather than trees…..and Critters comes to mind.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Speaking of infestations, ever have Japanese beetle problems or stinkbug problems? You’re lucky you live in Florida… at least for NOW.

And yes, this is a form of foreign warfare, to introduce a foreign element that will destroy regional crops.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

M13 — Don’t know what stinkbugs are but familiar with Japanese Beatles. Never a problem where grew up though. But our burbs weren’t a crop district either.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes and when they are there in the tens of thousands that green slime is all over the place. Nasty!

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Sounds like you lived through the big one in the northeast like I did. Trees and roads were covered.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh yeah, they were everywhere. The caterpillars were all over the trees and plants and then the moths on windows and the side of buildings and houses. It was crazy. I’ve never seen it since. What year was that, late 70’s early 80’s?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Tim — putting together how old I was…. gonna say it was like 1977 or so.

I absolutely LOVE the praying mantis! That’s yet another insect I grew up with, loving. But it’s all fun and games until they HISS at you for physically taunting.

Still cant get in touch with my Aunt and Uncle. I think they are fine because im sure if they werent that news would have made it to me. Im sure they have new plant decorations too, most the houses do there. Most the roads have something across them so its hard to go more than a couple of city blocks without finding you have to turn around due to an obstacle.

  82. D's avatar D says:

Tis is another cool bug that they have around here, i have actually seen one of them kill another bug once. Its over pretty damn fast.

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We have stink bugs here. When in the house I catch and release them. Crushing them causes the stink. I don’t usually kill anything, I try to catch and release all creatures.

I’ve got about 250,000 mosquito’s for you big hearted bastards to come catch and release for me! 😉

MIKE E.; Just read your entire effort top of this page. It was very nicely done. I HOPE everyone on this site understands that these articles require lots of research and lots of time and effort TO DO THEM CORRECTLY!!–I wrote a monthly column for America’s leading numismatic publication for 17 years. “Never forget that each installment, in its own way, says what kind of person you are,” said a fellow author/mentor. “Be sure that the message your column sends is the message you really WANT TO SEND,” he advised me. I’m guessing they liked the message because, for over 200 consecutive months, I got a really nice paycheck with a note of “atta boy” thrown in for good measure.

    “ATTA BOY, MIKEY!”

    NOW, where’s the paycheck??

Who do y’all have for Thursday Night Football? I’m taking the Eagles, over the G-Men and their weak O-Line.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Against the spread, or W/L? I think if the Eagles win, they just squeak by in this one, a FG or less. The spread is Eagles -3.5

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

DUDE! I’m an absolute football PURIST! I don’t bet, I don’t gamble, I don’t do fantasy football, and I sure as hell don’t do so-called ‘spreads’.

I’m talking STRAIGHT UP, my friend! I think the Eagles will win this one.
