The Dolphins looked like they answered the call against the Bengals. The defense played a very good game, really limiting the Bengals offense. The Dolphins shut out the Bengals in the 1st half, leading at the half 14-0. Talk about a tale of 2 halves, Ryan Tannehill completed 12 of 18 attempts for 114 yards and 1 TD, in the familiar short passing offense. All was well for the Dolphins, even through the 3rd quarter, although I thought they were a couple of plays that gave the indication that the wheels were ready to come off the tracks. The first was the ST’s hit by Martell Spaight, which at the time when the flag went up, I nearly lost my mind. It was a completely legal, legit hit, and I thought they flagged it for a late hit out of bounds, but it turned out, after the hit, Spaight was jawing at the Bengals returner Alex Erickson, and was flagged for a 15 YD unsportsmanlike conduct. That was #1. That moved the starting field position from the Bengals 14 yard line to the 29, big difference, especially after the Bengals struggled for 3 QTR’s.
Number 2 was just a few plays later, the Bengals were at midfield, and Dalton threw a short pass to TE CJ Uzomah, and Uzomah had to go up for the ball, and Dolphins safety T.J. McDonald came from behind and hit Uzomah a few milliseconds after the ball went through his hands. It wasn’t a vicious hit, McDonald contacted Uzomah with his hands first to his back, but he was leaping into the player, and then he eventually knocked the player to the turf, but not in a dirty way at all. That was called for the 2nd unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for 15 yards, and in my mind, that’s where the unraveling started.
The Bengals went on to score a TD on that drive, 30 yards of Dolphins penalties, which ended with Dalton hitting RB Joe Mixon for an 18 yard TD to start the 4th quarter. Then the real scary stuff happened. Grant returns the kickoff to the 19 yard line, and Gore on 1st down is stuffed after a 2 yard gain. 2nd and 12, Tannehill is sacked by DT Geno Atkins for a loss of 8, the ball now at the 13 yard line. Tunsil was injured at this point, and he was replaced by swingman Sam Young. Tannehill found Drake in a short pass over the middle, and Drake picked up the 1st down gaining 18 yards. At the 31 yard line, Kalen Ballage got his first carry of the game for 2 yards, and then IT happened. With Sam Young struggling to block anyone really, and the Bengals sensing the weakness there, they overloaded the right side, and sure enough there was immediate pressure on Tannehill as soon as he took the shotgun snap, and he attempted to roll right, and there was additional pressure from that side as well, and Tannehill inexplicably while attempting the throw the ball away, threw it low and it hit the helmet of RG Jesse Davis, and caromed into the waiting hands of DE Michael Johnson who returned the INT for a TD, which tied the game at 17-17. No excuse, that was a terrible play by Tannehill, who could have thrown it to the sideline out of bounds.
I’m not going to bother giving the blow by blow any further, I can sum it up with Sam Young couldn’t block anyone, The Bengals had all the momentum, and we don’t have a QB that can rise above everything and bring us back. Ryan Tannehill is not the problem, but I now believe he is not the answer. We’re not an explosive offense, we can’t put 40 points on a team, and the way the NFL has evolved, I think you have to. Too many things have to be aligned just right in order for Tannehill to succeed, and I think we’ve tried and continue to do just that, but in this league, the QB has to have that confidence, that killer instinct that I think Ryan Tannehill doesn’t have. He’s not a terrible QB, he’s just not the type of player that can lift his team, and I’m certain this will be his last season as the Dolphins QB.
This week can be extremely ugly, facing the #1 defense in the NFL, very likely without our starting LT Laremy Tunsil. The Bears are allowing the 2nd fewest points per game, 16.3, which is pretty close to what we score per game at 19.8, good for 28th out of 32 teams in the NFL. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. The Bears incidentally, are scoring 27.8 PPG, but that’s a little skewed due to the 48 points they hung on TB before their BYE week. Rookie QB Mitch Trubisky threw 6 TD’s in that game, but the 3-1 Bears don’t really score like that consistently, and they don’t have to with that defense. The Bears probably send fruit baskets and flowers to Jon Gruden weekly for trading Khalil Mack to their team.
This is a game we have no business winning, and yet for some reason, I have a feeling we hang around in this game, and possibly even win it, just because it makes no sense. No prediction this week, who cares anyway. It’s bizarre to look at the NFL standings, and see the Miami Dolphins there at 3-2, 1st place AFC East. I think about Jakeem Grant and how much more important he becomes each week, and then conversely, I think about Devante Parker and how close people are to saying “Who?” when you say his name. Are 1st RD Dolphins WR’s cursed? Yatil Green anyone? I think about the defense, and realize that this is probably the last year for Cam Wake, and I get the feeling he doesn’t have that storybook ending here. Shame, he deserves it, but I think maybe father time has finally reined the big boy in. I think about the young players we have on defense that are coming on, Jerome Baker, Minkah who started out great, Raekwon who needed to shake off some rust after being out last year, Xavien Howard, who is a top 10 CB, Vincent Taylor who keeps on getting better and Davon Godchaux too. Add in good ole Bobby McCain too. I guess what I’m saying is, draft a QB in the 1st RD next year, there are some really good young pieces to build around. Next year, always next year. I know, I know, we’re 3-2, probably soon to be 3-3, but we will win the Fest game, because . . .

This defense is starting to get good. Did they even have this many turnovers all last year? Still brain farts here and there but they are young and should continue improving.
Brock seemed to have a good command at the line and good handle on things. He has a weak arm, wont push the ball downfield, and generally just slow moving. He had good pocket presence and ran the offense well except his horrible INT.
The other INT is on well…..what should be a bag of chips. Was that his only play? I’d take a 2021 7th rd for him…..BUST
I really dont know which QB I’d like to see anymore. Would be nice to merge the two. Commitment to the run was great and hopefully it continues. I dont think this team can win with either QB passing all the time.

So the narrative that we don’t give Tannehill run support and he throws too much isn’t a valid one because Tannehill is only throwing the ball an average of 25x a game so far this season. The run game has failed Tannehill because teams know he can’t beat them and they play the run, not because we don’t give Tannehill run support like we game Osweiler yesterday.

Drake DID have 2 hands on that ball, and it appeared as though his intent was to secure the ball, he just didn’t hold onto it when it got knocked loose.
He started to extend the ball towards the plane and lost control of it. He should have tucked it and drove into the EZ because he would have still broke the plane and the ball would be secured. Was a mistake and he will learn from it. He was ashamed of himself. That was actually good to see

We can’t forget Gore has thousands more carries and experience, but Drake is extremely talented, and he will get his chances to show himself and do well.
We still don’t agree on Drake but I do agree with you on most other parts of your statement. I also agree that Drake’s strength isn’t moving the pike and getting the tough yards up the middle. But u think he can be viable there because if the OL gives him what they are supposed to, he can hit seams in the middle for big gainers. Gore is just better at taking whatever is there and making the most out of it. He gets really low on his carries and keeps defenders off his legs which he never stops driving with. He’s definitely old school
I’m with Mike the offense had a conmpletely different and better vibe to it with Osweiler in there. I also agree he isn’t the answer to our QB of the future but I think the offense looking and feeling more in sync with him highlights the issues with Tanny. He just isn’t the franchise QB for us. Next year we need to put up and even trade up to get us a possible QB of the future.
I’d say Wilson at half the cost of Landry was an upgrade but I still think Jarvis is a helluva receiver and pro-bowl talent. He has better hands than 99% of other receivers, he runs good routes, he gets open and he is tough as nails. He has some detracting characteristics too but overall I would have loved to keep him, we just couldn’t afford to

We were a few million over the cap when the decision on Landry was made. Maybe if we had done Landry’s deal after all the other moves, but we had to get back under the cap and 13mil was the best offer they could do. I did the math because I wanted to keep him too and I estimated 15mil and I had a hard time coming up with the money to do it. Suhs money didn’t come up until June and we had to be below cap by then so it just didn’t help us much and the rest of the cuts would only made it sorta doable. We would have had little to spare

I honestly think lack of a deep game was less on Osweiler and more on Gase. Gase did what he needed to and made the passing game easy for Osweiler and Osweiler stayed on script and did that. He also gave Osweiler run support commitment for the same reasons. Again this may be why Osweiler was successful but it again highlights that there is too much confidence in Tanny to not have to do the same with him. We have to reboot the QB situation next year. It sucks but we don’t have a potential franchise guy on our roster.
Osweiler did go through his read progressions better than Tanny normally does. He didn’t wait for his primary read to get open. He went on to the next read and came back to them a bunch of times. He called out protections etc really well at LOS, and he moved better in the pocket. I think his passes weren’t crisp and accurate as tannys generally are but that could be that his arm is still acclimating since he hasn’t started in so long. His passes in Denver always use to look more crisp but we will see maybe. I think he earned a second games to be honest and if he strings together 2 to 3 in a row he should be given the job for the rest of the year

Landry is not an elite rec due to his lack of overall speed yet he demanded elite money, he made a lot of catches due to the fact that we had no run game and cutler more times than not had to dump it off.
Landry is an above avg slot rec and he’s a “look at me” guy, Albert Wilson is a team player, has everything Landry has and more including 4.3 elite speed, Wilson is also cheaper.
with that said Wilson is a much better option than Landry.
He isn’t above average slot receiver, he is a record breaking slot receiver, elite enough to get his name in the record books and jersey sent to Canton. But some Dolphin fans are butt hurt and say he’s above average, Lol. I’m not going to change opinion anymore than you get to change history, agree to disagree here

Worst job in the whole stadium yesterday was table holder. Bears had 8 people holding up what looked like cheap plastic folding tables to create shade on their sideline. Those folks stood there holding up those four tables for the entire game. NFL rules say that home team has to give the visiting team the exact same equipment as the home team….. but guess shade doesn’t qualify as equipment.
That was the stupidest thing I’ve seen in a long time. That’s their best idea for shade? LOL
My guess is teams would bring in tailgate tents if they could but that the rules say can’t use anything other than what supplied. Those tables were probably meant to put gatoraid on and such.

I think the Landry discussion is kind of moot, he obviously is a really great receiver, we may be pissy about him and how things turned out and even how he has acted since leaving, but you still have to look at the stats and hehas them, he has records, it just is what it is.
He is gone however and the this that and the other discussion about retaining him has passed. I was definately in the pay the man camp, i thought he should be retained, i stand by the fact that he would be an asset to the team, but…… He was too expensive for us to keep at the time that his contract came up and he didnt yield on his asking price. For there to have been a contract the playr and the team have to come to terms on what the can afford and what he is willing to take. It didnt happen and the Browns were in a position to make it happen.
Thats unfortunately the game of football these days. Those days where a guy wears your colors his whole career is fading away. We have a couple on our team that have worn our colors a long ass time, we are lucky to have had such long standing players, and i hope they finish as dolphins but its not going to happen much with many more of the new ones that have just come in. Its something we will have to deal with a lot more in the future.
I liked Landry for the most part. He is what he is tho. He wanted AB or Julio money and fact is he’s not on their level. He’s not a game changer or even someone you plan how to stop.
Some even argue on here that it was RT17’s ineptness that contributed to all those numbers. We’ll see…….
He’s on pace for 1000+ yards receiving as a 12-13ypr and 3TD’s and 80+ receptions clip so far. Those are pretty much same he had here, except his YPR average is better than any other year he has had. With a rookie QB, thats not bad, especially out of the slot.

What a roller coaster game that was…. I have wanted to find reasons to believe in Gase and this game definitely goes on the list. Dolphins have endured a ton of critical injuries, but team is 4-2 and plays hard. Completely different feel from last season.
This team will be in most games every week. Should be right there in the playoff hunt all season. If our OL can protect the QB like that we will win a bunch of games, especially if you get a healthy Tannehill back. I don’t have a good answer why they were so much better this game. I guess a combination of good matchups, scheme, and hopefully improved chemistry/development.
Why over look the elephant in the room. You know why we were better yesterday, the obvious answer is usually the right answer.

Parker is too passive. You see it in the way he runs his routes and fights for position. We are fortunate to have better options. Wilson was the real deal yesterday.
He could have made that catch if he had just high pointed and fought off the defender, at the very least he could have prevent the int.
Big receivers need to have big balls, like Boldin, they ant be pussy mr glass mother fuckers like Parker.
Id give Osweiler at least one more game before i pulled him, and thats even if Tanny is fully healthy next week. If he sucks it up, you roll back to Tanny to finish the season and draft a QB. If he doesnt they you let him have another game, and if he had three decent to good games in a row, he gets the starting job for the rest of the year and we draft a QB.
That’s what I said yesterday. I see no reason to pull Osweiler after that game. See what happens, and it’s easy, they can spin it that Tannehill was still not ready to come back, shoulder is still too sore.

A weeks practice with the starters can help Brock’s development more than 90 minutes did
Who couldn’t see a QB controversy coming up after that game? One part of it is that Tanny played real well against the Titans and Jets and they at least say he hurt his shoulder in the Raiders game. And makes sense cause he hasn’t been the same since.

I just wanted to pop by and give Rob credit. Our particular offseason subset of argument regarding the running game was whether Drake could be effective as ‘the guy’ at RB. I’ve changed my position. You were right, Rob. Drake is more suited as a 3rd down type back, and we are CLEARLY more effective with Gore toting it on early downs.
I’m not down on Drake, even after fumble, but there are too many times a game where I say “if Gore were running it there we pick up an extra couple of yds. Give it Gore on early downs, and Drake on the later downs.

Always been a fan of thunder and lightening. And clear which is which, and that includes Drake being able to go deep.
Cav, i think the deal is more of what Gase has said. Gore needs carries to be effective, and he will be more effective if given the bulk of carries. Drake is explosive and he could go off on any given play, and he doesn’t need real warm up to get going. I think they can both be effective running up the middle, its just more Gore’s style and strength vs Drakes.
I dont think that that game is representative of what we can expext from Osweiler in every game. He has a history proving otherwise, btu thats by far the best offensive game we have had all year and it is at least a good bit because of his play. To me it wasnt just a thing here or there but there were things i like in what he did, but it was almost an air of cofidence he seems to have that you rarely see in Tanny. Tanny is a great guy, he is a high character person, he is a guy you want to pull for but a line has to be drawn somewhere and to me we have moved that line back and back nd back again for him, until now its just too much. If another person can come in and give tis team a spark we need to see if Osweiler can be that guy, because we need it badly.
But we saw him in preseason and know what a bust he was on other teams. Plus given that Brock got the starting call the morning of the game…. have to assume the Bears didn’t game plan for him. We all lived through Matt Moore and saw what a difference that can make.

I’m also liking Gore running on first downs, and love Drakes catching ability to go along with some timely gainers rushing too. Drake has had a bit of a sophomore slump so far imo, but that fumble will possibly fire him up. I wouldn’t be surprised if Drake takes one to the house next week, his speed is incredible.
Its a great situation to have 2 backs with differant skill sets to compliment each other.
And let’s also give some credit to our OL that blocked their asses off yesterday to help both the run and pass game to succeed

Cav, i think the deal is more of what Gase has said. Gore needs carries to be effective, and he will be more effective if given the bulk of carries. Drake is explosive and he could go off on any given play, and he doesn’t need real warm up to get going. I think they can both be effective running up the middle, its just more Gore’s style and strength vs Drakes.

Also i dont think that makes Drake a 3rd down back, i think that means we find ways to have them both out there as much as we can, 2 back sets, drake as a wr, etc. We might as well have thunder and lightning loaded up at the same time and have them guessing whats about to hit them.
We have really no reason to argue about RB, we have two really good ones and both of which help the team be better if they are given the ball more.

Osweiler is a QB who has had limited success, and very publicized failure. I think part of the reason people are skeptical of him was the fact that he got that really big stupid contract from Houston with only a small body of work as a starter in Denver. His time in Houston wasnt good, and i dont know if it was the team they had (keep in mind, no QB’s did well there until Watson got there) or if it was just him, but he really hasnt had a chance to prove anything since then.
