2018 Season – Game 7 – Lions @ Dolphins – Fest Week!

This coming Sunday is not only another inter-conference matchup with the Dolphins facing another NFC North team in the Chicago Bears, it’s also the Fest game.  Dolphins fans coming from various parts of Florida, east coast, west coast, Canada, I mean this is epic.  I thought it was going to be ugly this past weekend, I will freely admit that, and that was before it was announced that Tannehill was out, and Brock Osweiler was in.  As it turned out, that may have been a good thing, because although I don’t believe that Osweiler is our answer at QB for this year and beyond, he undeniably brought a different mentality to the team, and the team responded.  How long this will last remains to be seen.  I strongly feel that Osweiler should Sunday against the Lions.  Over 400 yards passing, 31 points on the scoreboard, 3 TD passes (2 INT’s), and a big win when we really needed it.

It was a crazy game, and there was never a  scenario in my mind where we put up 31 points on the Bears, who sported a top 2 defense in every category.  They averaged 4.5 sacks per game through the first 5 games.  Much credit must be given to Adam Gase for figuring out a way to neutralize that, along with the O-line, and the QB Osweiler.  It’s also crazy that I feel our defense played pretty well, all the while allowing 28 points.  The turnover battle was even, we threw 2 INT’s and lost a fumble, we snared 1 INT and forced and recovered 2 fumbles.

Gore was tearing it up yesterday, he made his biggest impact so far this season with 15 carries for 101 yards for a heady 6.7 YPC.  Amendola settled into the “Landry” role, catching the short passes and trying to make the most of them.  Forget “Landry” though, it’s Albert Wilson who electrified this game.  He catches some of the same passes that “Landry” used to end with 8 or 9 yards and get brought down, but Wilson takes those for 50 + yards a pop.  Wilson and Amendola make “Landry” obsolete, so his name shall no longer be spoken here.

What a great pickup TE Nick O-leary has been.  Guy just comes in and plays football.  Need me to block, you got it!  Need me to catch it, you got it!  He’s pushing Gesicki down the chart, but this kid deserves it.  Kiko Alonso is playing great this year.  Doesn’t mean he still doesn’t have his weaknesses, but the things he can do he has been doing very well.  Kiko is probably going to top 130 tackles, he has 3 FF’s, 1 FR, and 2 INT’s.  Playmaker!  Reshad Jones seem to make a few big plays each game.   Even if he’s not actually getting the INT, he’s creating them.  Vincent Taylor hustling with a motor like a 440 six-pack!  That boy tracked down Trubisky and took him down!  Lots of things on defense that give you plenty of hope, and some that don’t.  McTyer was exposed yesterday.  It’s going to happen.  Let’s hope good ole Bobby McCain gets better quick.

Matt Patricia’s Lions are 2-3 in the NFC North, and this has not been a great season so far for QB Matt Stafford.  Usually, Stafford is one of the better QB’s statistically, but not this year.  The Lions have their own version of thunder and lightning, Kerryon Johnson is the lightning, LeGarrette Blount is the thunder. They basically have a 50/50 split in carries so far, Johnson averaging an impressive 5.7 YPC and Blount 2.5 YAACOD (2.5 yards and a cloud of dust).  The Lions have 3 WR’s that are dangerous, Marvin Jones, Kenny Golladay and Golden Tate.  Jones is like what Parker should have been here, Golladay is closer to Stills, and Tate is like their Albert Wilson. Their former TE Eric Ebron is now killing it in Indy with Andrew Luck.

As I mentioned earlier, I’d prefer to see Brock Osweiler start.  Here’s why.  I say this with no disrespect to Ryan Tannehill, but I feel like we need to run our offense very carefully in order for him to succeed, and I didn’t see any of that with Osweiler.  Not that he was a gunslinger throwing footballs all over Hard Rock, but it just seemed more free, less tense, and much less careful.  It’s just what I saw.  Osweiler looked calm, and in control.  He wasn’t perfect, he won’t be, but there was a different element I haven’t seen with this offense, something intangible.  Tannehill is probably not going to be much better, so it should be easy to just say Ryan isn’t ready, so we’re going with Brock.  See what happens.  If Brock flops, it’s just as easy to say the following week that Ryan is ready.  If Brock plays well, no fan will mind if he remains the QB, we’ve seen what Ryan Tannehill can do, nothing wrong with going an alternative, especially if we’re winning.

I am really looking forward to seeing everyone this week, and I hope the game can match the fun we’re going to have all week.

Oh, BTW, we’re 4-2, tied for 1st place in the AFC East.  Who woulda thunk?

There once was a QB named Tannehill

So he went to the bench
    His anus he did clench

Bat – Fair enough. Pretty sure it will be Osweiler this week, but there is a chance he gives Tannehill the start if he’s good to go. I do have a feeling though that Gase is planning on going with Osweiler no matter what this week, and see what happens. Gotta turn in, have a good night. Any chance you make an appearance at D&B?

balls busted because of his fantastical statistical method of determining Which RB was better as a starter.
    ___________________________________________________

Why do you think they are “fantastical stats” I wanted to know what our avg distance to go was on 2nd down, so i based my criteria on that, runs of 10 yards or more are not relevant.

both RBs are judged by the same criteria and both have multiple runs of 10 yards or more that have been eliminated.

not sure why you don’t understand the logic behind this?

1st down while it appears to be inconsequential is the most important down of the series, 3 yards and a cloud of dust is not pretty but if you avg more than 4 yards on first down you normally win the game.

chances of converting a third down have a lot to do with what happens on 1st down.

most teams run the ball a high percentage of the time on 1st down and the D knows this so it is a physical test to see who is stronger.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

It’s the throwing out of any run over 10 on 1st down. Skews the results. You could use the Bell Curve, throw out the highest and lowest, and get a true average. We’ve beat this horse to dust. Now I just like teasing you about it.

Really what you are looking for is a weighted average for consistency – out of x-number of runs, he gains y-number of yards z-percentage of times. Whatever, you got the right answer – gloat a little!

    Wyoming,

  19. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Gase has said without a doubt Tannehill is the starter, he hurt his shoulder against cincy and it regressed during the week last week, he is day to day and if he’s ready to go next week he will be the starter.

  20. D's avatar D says:

All of this discussion doesn’t happen if we have a clear cut starter and that’s the point. I also promise you that no matter the discussion that Gase has with the media there is internal discussion about what’s going on. You can say that’s Gases guy, but do you think it’s a ride or die situation? Do you think Gase sacrifices his career for Tanny? We can’t all be blind.

I know fans react knee jerk but how is it knee jerk when every year the majority of us start out with hope that this is the year that the corner finally gets turned and each year we have to hope, well maybe it will be different next year. If we just have all the perfect pieces for him he can be better, he can be more consistent. When is it expected that people are acting responsibily when the finally give up and want something different for their team.

I don’t think Osweiler is the answer tbh. I’m extremely skeptical that he can lead the team. Still with a change there us hope for something different, sticking with the same ole same ole same ole isn’t inspiring hope it’s inspiring more if the same, a little excitement to tease us and then shit show.

M – We had 128 yards rushing against the Bengals, so not like we didn’t give Tannehill a balanced offense…
    __________________________

we did give him a balanced offense for 3.5 quarters and were up 17-zip, but then all of a sudden for some reason which i don’t understand we abandoned the run and started slinging it, it started with 3rd and 1 at midfield in the 3rd, instead of a power play with Gore or a QB sneak to pick up the 1st we threw a hail mary to stills, and from that point on we regressed to a gunslinging offense.

    ___________________________________

i disagree, your missing the definition of my research, what is our avg yards to pick up the 1st on 2nd down? running the ball 10 yards plus doesn’t give us that stat, as once we achieve 10 yards or more it is 1st down again. it’s irrelevant to the definition.

The criteria applies to both RBs, not to mention both RBs have multiple 10 yards plus runs which makes it moot and a wash.

That could backfire on Nick Bosa but i can see the point. He would be rushed back to get back in November, so its likely if he came back in a safe to the player manner, he is getting back, maybe for playoffs and even that might be too early. I doesnt sound like he gave up on the team, it sounds like he is just looking at the big picture of what could be detrimental to try to come back this year anyways and he is playing it safe and allowing himself to be fully re-habed for the combine.

It could backfire with spin of “not a team player” but the interview process should cure concerns over that unless he just flunks the interviews.

Granted, I miss a lot of conversations on this board, but who is claiming Tannehill is an elite QB and there’s no need to try to upgrade the position? I don’t see it in the national media either.

He’s an average starter. Maybe good enough to win a SB if you surrounded him with an elite team and coaching staff. The same goes for most starting QBs in the NFL today. Upgrading to a QB that can win despite the talent around him is a very difficult proposition. Doesn’t mean you don’t constantly try to do that via the draft or a rare trade opportunity.

Just seems like an argument about nothing.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I tend to agree but I don’t think you need an elite team and coaching staff. Just not a team with a lot of holes. Very few QBs are good enough to mask a flawed team.

    D,

I saw you post about pass run ratios, but I think expecting a 1:1 ratio in a league where no team through 6 weeks has a 1:1 ratio is antiquated. Maybe that’s not what you expect, but I think some folks do think 1:1 is reasonable, I just don’t think it is. The rules changed and favor passing so even 1.43:1 doesn’t seem very pass heavy to me.

  56. Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

I did one google page of research in hopes of contributing more then an idea for once. 🙂

Our current pass mix is 56.7% 11 teams have a more run oriented ratio then ours, 20 teams are more pass heavy then we are. The most run happy offense in the league (seattle) is still above 50% at 50.5%

For ratios purposes, our current ratio is 1.31 to 1 .

    • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

Pass heaviest offense is Indy with 2.41 to 1 !!!!!

(that’s too pass heavy for even passing game fans like me!!!!)

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Unfortunately some of the stats in regards to run vs pass are disproportionate due to the fact that when teams get down late in games they tend to pass more.
a good way to break it down would be by quarter.

That said i wonder what the list of those 11 teams are that run more than us, are they good teams or bad teams?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A lot of it has to do with game situations. It’s not as easy to say just do this ratio and you win. If you run 16 times in the 1st half for 34 yards and you’re down starting the 2nd half 17-3 you’re probably going to pass a lot more in the 2nd half. It’s one thing to stick with the running game to keep the defense honest, it’s another to keep going with it with little production and putting yourself in 3rd and long and punting.

  57. Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

Orob, here’s the 11 run happier offenses then us:
    Panthers
    Pats
    Redskins
    Chargers
    Bears
    Titans
    Bills
    Rams
    Jets
    Cowboys
    Seahawks

Kind of a mixed bag. I didn’t think the Rams would be that low though, them and the pats are minor surprises to me.

    Jahndoh,

The stats you are throwing out don’t account for W/L, quarter-by-quarter, margin of W/L… just teams who run more (or less) than us.

FACT: we win more when we run more… even when it’s a one-score game (10 out of 12 times when we rush 30 or more times in a game).

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The 10 out 12 times reflects the times we won by rushing 30 or more times in a one-score game. The other 2 times were BLOWOUTS, by us.

  61. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – It can go out the window when a team is trailing, and conversely, a team that’s up big will run more at the end of the game to take time off the clock. 4 of our 6 games were decided by one score

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Pretty sure I heard them say on the broadcast this Sunday against the Bears that Gase is 16-5 in games decided by one score, so I guess that went to 17-5 after the win.

  62. D's avatar D says:

Jahn thats basically what i was saying, i dont think our run to pass ratio is all out of whack and i dont think it tells us W’s vs L’s because we have had a better run to pass ratio than our average and lost, and we have had a heavier pass to run and won. I was saying to me, its more about the 3 and outs, and less about the run pass ratio which is consistently in the 1.4-1.7 range, pass to run. In the games we have won, we have had the ball more snaps, which means we moved the ball and therefore had more possessions. Thats why i said Osweilers game was such a good one because we controlled the ball a lot better. 73 snaps on offense (not counting the re-dos because of penalties) which was our best in that regard all year.

    • D's avatar D says:

Running is important, i really dont think we disagree on anything like that, none of us here, BUT i think the important stat if you want to talk about runs isnt the number of runs but the effectiveness on 1st down to set us up for 2nd and short or 3rd and short. In that regard ORob is both right about the running on 1st and the RB thats been the most effective doing it.

  69. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our record being very good when we run 30 times or more is because in those games we didn’t trail or trail by a lot and we could maintain a balanced offense. Also it has to do with how effective the running game is. It’s not simply about run it more and you win. As we all know our offense has gotten off to slow starts and specifically last year we trailed a lot. We were basically shutout 3 times last year, 20-6 NYJ scoring on the last play of the game, 20-0 NO and 40-0 BAL. You’re not going to run a lot in games like that. You have to try to get back in the game at some point and passing gives you the best chance for chunk yardage. By the way Ajayi was the starting RB in all three of those games. So it wasn’t a Drake 1st down issue. LOL

Look at the rushing stats and the amount of plays we ran. Less than a quarter of possession time for Peyton and the Colts. Crazy!

I’ll never forget that game. I was at a bar in Freehold with my nephew watching the game on a big screen, tons of people, we were so happy with the way they played, thought for sure we were gonna win, but it seemed like every time he (Manning) got the ball, they scored. So frustrating and deflating at the end

But according to the ‘Tanne-holics’, it didn’t matter that his shovel-passes that went for TDs equated to ZERO air-yards.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I never lessened either of the QB’s TD’s. A TD is a TD. What’s the point of nitpicking TD throws? I’m happy with all of them! Give us more!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Why this kind of comment? What’s with the name labeling? Who are the Tanne-holics’, M13, and where do you stand about him?

A great play for the team is a great play for the team. But not once did Brock throw a pass down the field like Tannehill has to Stills or Parker for big gains or TDs but nobody brought that up. We all saw how the game went down. The announcers pointed out all game that Osweiler doesn’t push the ball down the field. But he played smart and within himself. Awesome! He didn’t lose the game for us and helped us win the game.

Do you look for divide within the fan ranks with comments like this? Referring to other fans as Tanne-holics’ is an insult as if a supporter of Tannehill can’t be objective. Just like people who get sensitive about being labeled haters.

I call it the Wilson effect. The guy has brought an element to this offense we haven’t had, Grant too, but now even that has to seep into this fucked up QB conversation. Just enjoy it as a fan. Why this constant divide when I guarantee you the team doesn’t look at this way at all.

Sorry man, not sure what you’re trying to say sometimes. It seems like pitting some against others and I think that sucks.

This last game was why I have always said James can be a top 5 RT. He has the tools. He needs to start playing like this every week. We could have 2 really good tackles for years if they play up to their potential. The inconsistency needs to stop.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I agree we potentially have bookend tackles but they need to stay healthy

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Unfortunately James is always banged up. He can play well but it doesn’t last long. I’m not sure he’ll be back in 2019. Not because he can’t play well, but I think the team worries about his reliability ad cost. They gave him the 5th year extension and they’re already seeing signs of durability issues. It’s too bad, because he’s a good guy and has talent.

And for those who say the OL was to blame for our lack of running production…Gore doesn’t seem to have a problem with it.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So 2.8, 2.0 and 3.7 against the NYJ, OAK and NE didn’t matter?

I love the Gore pickup and he’s been awesome at times. But he’s also struggled with team struggles as well. Most of your posts seem to be anti-Drake. Did Drake do something personally bad to you? LOL

Why the constant hate and bickering about certain players that then leads to us bloggers getting into squabbles?

We’re 4-2, let’s hope the team keeps building chemistry and improving and we make a run. I’m not sure why we have to bash one player to prop another.

I for one said before the season started we might have to scratch and claw our way to some wins early on while this team starts to comes together. It’s actually happening. We’re 4-2 and it hasn’t been great or ideal. It could be a lot worse.

      Go Phins!!!! 🙂

    • Our OL played far better this last game than they did all year. Let’s hope that continues!

  89. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Tannehill is still on the fence as far as i’m concerned, and yes there are some that completely support him around here regardless of what he does on the field, I don’t see anything wrong with labeling them Tanneholics. what is that a bad word???

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Like you with Ajayi. Okay I get it. But Naples was surely called out for pointing out some stats. Fair is fair I guess. The labeling is immature no matter how you slice it.

      Go Phins!!!

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Not sure what you’re talking about with Naples, he’s a good dude, never had a problem with him.
as far as Ajayi goes 14-9 with 2-7 without, do the math

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You’re missing the convo. M13 called people Tanne-holics’ based on Naples posting Osweiler throwing mostly short passes and then calling out Tanne-holics’ for not having that same issue on a shovel pass from Tannehill to Wilson in the OAK game which nobody ever mentioned. That was his own call. I don’t remember anyone propping up Tannehill because of that play. It was a team play, not a Tannehill awesomeness play. LOL

It’s amazing to me, as fans we can’t enjoy being 4-2 after a win over the Bears where we all thought whether with Ryan or Brock at QB we were in trouble off of that horrible debacle in Cincy in the 4th quarter. We win one of the most exciting games in a long time with Brock as our backup playing well and it’s let shit on Ryan who was the QB for 3 of our 4 wins. WTF!!! LOL

It’s amazing to me how some of you think about what you’ve seen with this team. The max protect and running game (game plan) going right at the Bears DEF was awesome!!! But no… as if it was all about Osweiler… and Wilson not being amazing with his speed and ability to turn short passes into spectacular plays and getting us back into the game. The same thing happened against OAK. The Wilson Effect!!! Now we know why we signed him to what we did. The team had a vision for his skill set and we’ve now seen why. Without him, we’re most likely 2-4.

Wilson is our 6 game MVP. So go ahead with the QB controversy. It’s been about big plays from playmakers – offense, defense and STs. I personally like it that way. You don’t have to rely on a savior QB or just a handful of players to win a game like we have in the past. We’re getting it across the board. Guys are buying in and stepping up. Team game. Love it!

    • Tanny appears to have hit a wall, he’s one of the highest paid players and our starting QB., but doesn’t improve anymore.
A lot is expected for Tanny and his unbelievable hundred million dollar plus contract.
Maybe one day he will earn some of it. He’s looked good here or there, but for that kind of money he should be winning a lot more games and leading us to Super Bowls .
He didnt even play last year, and missed a lot of the year before either.
If he can’t stay on the field, and can’t lead this team, we need to find someone who can
