2018 Season – Game 7 – Lions @ Dolphins – Fest Week!

This coming Sunday is not only another inter-conference matchup with the Dolphins facing another NFC North team in the Chicago Bears, it’s also the Fest game.  Dolphins fans coming from various parts of Florida, east coast, west coast, Canada, I mean this is epic.  I thought it was going to be ugly this past weekend, I will freely admit that, and that was before it was announced that Tannehill was out, and Brock Osweiler was in.  As it turned out, that may have been a good thing, because although I don’t believe that Osweiler is our answer at QB for this year and beyond, he undeniably brought a different mentality to the team, and the team responded.  How long this will last remains to be seen.  I strongly feel that Osweiler should Sunday against the Lions.  Over 400 yards passing, 31 points on the scoreboard, 3 TD passes (2 INT’s), and a big win when we really needed it.

It was a crazy game, and there was never a  scenario in my mind where we put up 31 points on the Bears, who sported a top 2 defense in every category.  They averaged 4.5 sacks per game through the first 5 games.  Much credit must be given to Adam Gase for figuring out a way to neutralize that, along with the O-line, and the QB Osweiler.  It’s also crazy that I feel our defense played pretty well, all the while allowing 28 points.  The turnover battle was even, we threw 2 INT’s and lost a fumble, we snared 1 INT and forced and recovered 2 fumbles.

Gore was tearing it up yesterday, he made his biggest impact so far this season with 15 carries for 101 yards for a heady 6.7 YPC.  Amendola settled into the “Landry” role, catching the short passes and trying to make the most of them.  Forget “Landry” though, it’s Albert Wilson who electrified this game.  He catches some of the same passes that “Landry” used to end with 8 or 9 yards and get brought down, but Wilson takes those for 50 + yards a pop.  Wilson and Amendola make “Landry” obsolete, so his name shall no longer be spoken here.

What a great pickup TE Nick O-leary has been.  Guy just comes in and plays football.  Need me to block, you got it!  Need me to catch it, you got it!  He’s pushing Gesicki down the chart, but this kid deserves it.  Kiko Alonso is playing great this year.  Doesn’t mean he still doesn’t have his weaknesses, but the things he can do he has been doing very well.  Kiko is probably going to top 130 tackles, he has 3 FF’s, 1 FR, and 2 INT’s.  Playmaker!  Reshad Jones seem to make a few big plays each game.   Even if he’s not actually getting the INT, he’s creating them.  Vincent Taylor hustling with a motor like a 440 six-pack!  That boy tracked down Trubisky and took him down!  Lots of things on defense that give you plenty of hope, and some that don’t.  McTyer was exposed yesterday.  It’s going to happen.  Let’s hope good ole Bobby McCain gets better quick.

Matt Patricia’s Lions are 2-3 in the NFC North, and this has not been a great season so far for QB Matt Stafford.  Usually, Stafford is one of the better QB’s statistically, but not this year.  The Lions have their own version of thunder and lightning, Kerryon Johnson is the lightning, LeGarrette Blount is the thunder. They basically have a 50/50 split in carries so far, Johnson averaging an impressive 5.7 YPC and Blount 2.5 YAACOD (2.5 yards and a cloud of dust).  The Lions have 3 WR’s that are dangerous, Marvin Jones, Kenny Golladay and Golden Tate.  Jones is like what Parker should have been here, Golladay is closer to Stills, and Tate is like their Albert Wilson. Their former TE Eric Ebron is now killing it in Indy with Andrew Luck.

As I mentioned earlier, I’d prefer to see Brock Osweiler start.  Here’s why.  I say this with no disrespect to Ryan Tannehill, but I feel like we need to run our offense very carefully in order for him to succeed, and I didn’t see any of that with Osweiler.  Not that he was a gunslinger throwing footballs all over Hard Rock, but it just seemed more free, less tense, and much less careful.  It’s just what I saw.  Osweiler looked calm, and in control.  He wasn’t perfect, he won’t be, but there was a different element I haven’t seen with this offense, something intangible.  Tannehill is probably not going to be much better, so it should be easy to just say Ryan isn’t ready, so we’re going with Brock.  See what happens.  If Brock flops, it’s just as easy to say the following week that Ryan is ready.  If Brock plays well, no fan will mind if he remains the QB, we’ve seen what Ryan Tannehill can do, nothing wrong with going an alternative, especially if we’re winning.

I am really looking forward to seeing everyone this week, and I hope the game can match the fun we’re going to have all week.

Oh, BTW, we’re 4-2, tied for 1st place in the AFC East.  Who woulda thunk?

I really doubt we’ve seen the last of Tanny. Osweiler will most likely not be able to sustain his level of play from last week. Tanny will be back in the saddle sooner or later. I hope we keep running like we did last week. That will make life a lot easier.
    ————————————————
Thats exactly how we succeed despite who has the ball, by taking it away from them for anything buit very simple passes that our play-makers turn into big ones. I think though that makes the Who is at QB moot, and if its moot then next year it would be smarter if the Who wasnt 26mil. Thats not a shot at Tanny thats logistics. Osweiler right now is on a league minimum 1 year contract. If he can perform at least as good as Tanny, then we re-sign him to another 1 year prove it contract, pay him 5-6mil cut Tanny and recoup 7-8mil cap space and use it on the OL depth, or some other position we might need depth or starters at.

At this point the argument is the same one had by people who wanted Suh gone. If we have a guy who is getting paid a lot of money and we cant actually tell the difference between him in there an not, then why have that guy. Compound that with the fact that Tanny is not even close to the talent level that Suh was at his position and you have a really strong argument for not keeping him at his current contract. If the guy wants to take a pay cut, then what he is at about 7-8mil makes more sense, but not 26.

He does seem to be a magnet

  5. fins are in deep crap with RT. we are paying way too much money for what is basically a backup QB.
he isn’t as good as the backup QB< and yet the fins gave him the key to the vault!
Tannehill is so pathetic that after being here at least 5 years, owsweiler is making him look bad.

what a stupid organization we are to let minimum wage pro bowlers go who is setting NFL records,
, and instead overpay hundreds of millions of dollars for a guy that isn't good enough to start.
the tannehill contract is the teams worst ever IMO, as he is only worth about 10 percent of it

even worse, we cant retain excellent talent because we are giving WAY too much money for less talents
the super huge money we are wasting on Tannehill could be used for several players that can actually show up on game days.
why we keep paying hundreds of millions to a crappy player defies common sense, and its a miracle that Gase was able to manage last week with all that's going on.

Gase will need to overachieve and make up for front office mistakes big time IMO, or We will squander the season away
its totally unfair to fuck up the roster and expect the coach to make it right, SMH

thank God for Miami Heat and black jersies ,, or bears would have won IMO

    • BTW, even a 90 percent pay cut for Tannehill would still leave him too much money for a backup. a good backup QB isn’t worth over 10 mil a year, not even close

so RT is really only earning about 3.3 percent of his pay, more or less, the other 97 percent is wasted money

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We aren’t in trouble with Tannehills contract
We Recoup a huge cap savings if we cut him
We also take a significant dead money hit (like we are taking for suh)

But if you are going to draft a qb (which we should)
You are going to need a vet to hold down the qb spot until the rookie is ready
And veteran qbs with starting experience cost $

I’m pretty sure that’s what Tannehill May be in 2019 – a place holder for a rookie we are bringing along
He might have to take a pay cut to stay in Miami
It He may not stay in Miami

      It really doesn’t natter
With the rookie salary cap you always have room for a rookie qb and a vet a high priced vet qb

The question for the front office is whether cutting him in the off-season is worth the cap savings vs the dead money
In other words – if you just have to resign a vet and spend more with the dead money and his salary, then it makes no sense to cut tannehill

So Tannehill has incentive to restructure if he wants to stay in Miami

If that happens he will start in 2019 while we bring a rookie along
And as frustrated as Tannehill makes me – I don’t think that’s a bad deal

And now Brockweiler has a shot to audition to be the vet, and if he performs well, we will save money next year by keeping him instead of Tannehill

It’s not a bad situation at all unless you werrr hoping that Tannehill would “turn the corner” – it’s a very workable qbs situation for 2019

More importantly, can we win now with this uncertainty at qb?

  6. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  7. according to NFL.com stats, Tannehill is number 28 QB out of only 32 teams, SMH

why we didn’t draft Deshuan Watson , or others that came up over the years is haunting us now

  8. ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

  9. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Watson hasn’t done shit!
But make a great defense lose games!

    Next!

    • he played last week, RT didnt, and is rated higher for 2018 than RT for less than 10 percent of the money.

yea he prolly isn’t that good yet, but still better than RT for a fraction of the cost.

      • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

        He’s on his Rookie contract!

Let’s see if they sign extend him??

      • exactly, he would be on a rookie contract for us too if we picked him,

instead we gave an incredibly dumb extension to a lessor talent than Watson, that has barely helped us for 3 the last 3 years.

what a coincidence Ryan saved his worst 3 years for us AFTER signing the extension.
        friggin bum.

  10. from 2015
    James Walker
    ESPN Staff Writer
    \
The Miami Dolphins have signed quarterback Ryan Tannehill to an extension that will keep him under contract through the 2020 season, the team announced Monday.

Securing promising quarterback Ryan Tannehill with a six-year, $96 million extension is a calculated risk for the Dolphins, but a worthwhile one, James Walker writes.

    .
The deal is worth $96 million, including $45 million in guaranteed money, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

that’s too much money riding our bench, backup QBs are cheap, and Walker mentioned calculated risk, nice way to say they probably screwed up, but hoping not

  11. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Oh and to clarify I was saying Watson sucks!

I don’t need to put my opinion of Tanny on a billboard every 10 posts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • if Watson sucks, remember he is younger and yet can still outplay RT
      .
so we all get You think Watson sucks

, but , im afraid to ask what You think of QBs not as good as Watson, yet are on our team stealing our money

  12. anyway Wyoming, how do You think RT will do this week against the Lions?
You think He will help us win?

  13. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I wasn’t sold on Watson coming out of college!

Just like I’m not sold on Baker!

Watson needs to show he can read Defenses, and mature!

He’s actually almost a mirror image of Tanny! Isn’t that interesting? 😉

    • except he is younger and cheaper, and a lot more mobile and intelligent.
but its not just Watson, there have been many QBs drafted since RT that are better and cheaper options
we skipped all of that, and overpaid the underperformer, and its not working out the last 3 years, its time to cut bait and move on IMO

      • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Watson hasn’t shown one bit of increased football IQ!

        That’s in the past!

        It’s still not an answer!

It’s just pissing in the wind!

      • agreed Watson isn’t great, hes just an average name I picked out that is playing better than RT< there are 26 more names playing better QB than RT, want me to list em?
just google NFL.com stats and all the QBs outplaying RT are there

  14. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

No David I don’t need to go see any stats about RT!

I have a dozen poster’s here to tell me what a piece of shit he is!

What I can’t seem to get anyone to tell me is what there is for a better option!!!!!!!!!!!

    • but that is where You would see the better options that 27 other teams found than Us, fair enough if You choose self censure on it, but Watson has indeed shown some damn good intelligence,
listen to former Cardinal and now beatwriter Lance Zierlein on Watson adjusting the OL presnap.

“I saw something when I rewatched [the game] the other night that I didn’t see during the game and I thought it was outstanding. I believe it was late in the fourth quarter. The Colts showed a two-deep safety look, which basically means you could blitz from either side because either safety could come down to cover for the slot whose blitzing. And, for whatever reason, you can see Watson changing the protection to get his offensive linemen to slide to the right.
When I’m re-watching I’m saying ‘what is causing him to do it?’ Now the right tackle can pick up someone off the slot if he came and sure enough he came. I don’t know to this day what caused him to change his protection that way. They disguised it well. I just thought it was outstanding. There was no clue and yet he got himself protected.”

And that, my friends, is what film study and a high football IQ will do for you. Watson works at his craft. In the process of this work, we are going to see mistakes made in diagnosing defenses and making decisions. But he’s a work in progress and a former NFL offensive line coach is already seeing signs of Watson making big leaps in understanding the advanced layers of the game. In college, quarterbacks can play checkers and have great success.
In the NFL, they must play chess.

    Tim,
It’s actually kinda interesting to me. I have always felt Tanny plays at his best when he just lets his athleticism take over and kinda wings it a little. When he gets too controlled and robotic, I think he plays worse. For Osweiler, I think it’s just the opposite. He needs to stay composed and play within himself…don’t try to make the athletic play because he tends to make mistakes when he does.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

      I see that!

I think the comparisons to Henny and Tanny are correct in some respects.

I think they were both coached to not make the big mistake!

      Makes him tentative!

      JMHO of course

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wyo, I don’t see the comparison with Henne and Tannehill at all. Ryan has had a much better career and has been way more productive. He’s a better athlete and he has a better arm. Henne never raised his game to another level. Tannehill did improve his game over his career despite what his critics say. The stats prove it. Winning records, making the playoffs and winning a playoff game etc. is what has been Tannehill’s albatross. He still has a chance at that. We’ll see. First he has to get healthy.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s what Gase has been trying to coach him to do. Trust your ability and wing it. He said that the first year he was HC. I agree with it to. When he plays confident and more aggressive and takes shots he plays better and the results are usually better.

I agree Orob but I see that in today’s game you have to get into your run game by being productive in your pass game. When we produce in the passing game we’re better as a running team. Those stats will beer out too. Or our passing and what we had in week 4&5 will lead a coach to declare a player injured. Let’s just see if Coach was right. I think he might have been. Brocktober says he REALLY knows this offense. Show it muther fucker. It’s right now for Oswieller or never.

Son, i think just the opposite, you have to run to set up the pass, the opposing D will tend to play pass coverage with LBers deeper/2 deep safeties, less players in the box untill you make them respect the run. just like the pats did to us playing 7 DBs,

the pass is unpredictable you either gain big yardage or you get squat. but if you are able to run the ball effectively opposing D’s have no choice but to bring up help to stop it, otherwise you will run all over them, that’s when the passing lanes open up. JMO.

when Gore starts pounding the middle and picking up chunk yardage as he did against the Bears this opens up the defensive secondary, and with the likes of wilson and grants speed will lead to huge plays from them.

David – You are the perfect socialist sheep — a bullfrog in boiling water. Governmental functions such as police, fire etc. are not socialist structures. They are just basic functions of government. Socialism is the antithesis of Americanism. Americanism is based in individualism, socialism in collectivism. Socialism is about enforced group think, central planning by a few elites, and central control. Socialism cannot exist without coercion and forced participation. Socialism has and will fail everywhere it is tried. It destroys economies, societies, and families. Instead of googling your thoughts, try reading a book. Start with F.A. Hayek’s “Road to Serfdom.” Study some history.

You can be a socialist and US citizen by virtue of being born here or naturalize get, but you cannot be an American and a socialist. And if you want socialism, pack your ass up and move to a socialist country. I’m sure that Cuba or Venezuela, or North Korea would be happy to have you.

I don’t think they seek to strip individualism from their citizens the way a place like a china classically did

Denmark for instance emphasizes equality which is also an American virtue
They try to apply that to income as well
They don’t have a lot of economic disparities

Is that right for the US?
I don’t really think it works so well for us but I will thinka we can use a shakeup in the way we spend tax dollars so that the average citizen is getting more bang for their buck

I just don’t think socialism is the wait in line for your ration s toilet paper some people make it out to be

It works for a lot of modern democracies and preserves the citizens individualism

Scandinavian countries are not socialist. That is a myth. They are capitalist countries with more progressive social programs than we have. They are what progressives in this country want us to be. Socialism is an economic system where “the people” own all businesses collectively via government as opposed to individual ownership.

Social programs does not mean socialism. Neither does infrastructure, education and civil servants.

Communism is a system where all property and business is publicly owned and people are paid due to their skill levels where the common good of the state is more important than individual freedom.

Like it or not, big plays usually come through the air. This is now a passing league. What you would like is an effective running game. To be able to pick up short yardage. To be able to get reasonable yardage on first and second downs. To keep your offense ahead of the chains and on schedule. But, you need a QB who can make plays from the pocket. Both phases should compliment each other but this league will never go back to a running league. So, you better have a QB who can play well and take advantage of all the benefits the league gives to QBs and receivers. If you don’t, I don’t care how well you run the ball, you won’t be successful. You don’t score 30-35 points running the ball. Your running game doesn’t need to be great…just effective when you need it.

…Both phases should compliment each other but this league will never go back to a running league…
    —————–
Agree that both phases should complement each other, but this league is constantly changing.

In theory, the passing league would make back-7 defenders smaller, quicker, and faster in order to keep up with aerial assaults… it’s happened, as predicted. Also happened as predicted, TEs would become bigger, faster, and stronger in order to take advantage of these smaller defenders.

The next thing that is happening as predicted? A resurgence in bigger, stronger RBs in order to take advantage of these smaller defenders. We’re also seeing more RBs being taken high in the Draft (Barkley was taken #2 overall just last year). The Jaguars have been ahead of the curve in this fashion, and they made it to the AFC Championship last year.

I sense the pendulum is beginning to swing back to a running league. No, it won’t ever be as it once was before the Super Bowl era, to be sure. However, I feel we’re going to see the next 2,000+ yard rusher soon. It’s all a matter of cause and effect, trends, strategies, and taking advantage of what’s there (or not there). JMO, of course.

Piggy, yes there is a big difference in social programs in a society that is for the benefit of all the people and the structure of state controlled economic system. Like in China where they control all aspects of life; how many children you can have, what you can practice, where you can go etc. Centralized government control is the ultimate police state. We sure as hell don’t want that in America.

Most teams value and hoard picks, and try to make good solid trades too.
Sometimes We do this, but sometimes we make huge mistakes, and Parker was one.

    ————-
I’ve gotta disagree with ya on that, David… that we screwed up using a first rounder on him. DeVante’s only problems have been injuries, which has set him back. And IF I’m not mistaken, DeVante didn’t need a screw in his foot until AFTER we’d drafted him. In other words, he was a VERY clean, injury-free pick when we selected him and it was at the time a GRAND draft pick.

Now in hindsight(?)… yeah, things don’t look so good… these things unfortunately happen. But when DeVante IS on the field and healthy, he’s been a STUD with highlight reel material to boot!

The biggest fear in a situation like this is that we give up on a talented player just a tad too early, only to trade (or cut) him to a team that reaps the benefits we drafted the player to be.

I’ll tell ya this… after 4 years of injuries, I’m ready to move on from DeVante. But allow the record to reflect that he was a VERY clean pick in the 1st round, who had all the makings of the next great WR. $#!t happens, unfortunately!

    • I agree we didn’t know about the injuries of the future, I just never thought he wasn’t what we needed, i didn’t think he was physical enough for the NFL with his slight build and non aggressive personality.
I was feeling Bud Dupree LB that draft, or a QB if there was one, there wasn’t, just Dupree

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

ALSO to keep in mind… Adam Gase’s regime didn’t draft DeVante. That was on Philbin and company. Thus, Gase has no ‘attachment’ to DeVante.

  70. My father almost perished fighting the fascists when he was barely 18 year son old. He told me how evil fascism and nazis were, and the atrocities they committed.
He also told me about Pearl Barbour, and said it was the only way to get US involved in the war, we were isolationist, and didn’t want to join europes and Asia s war until europes and asias war came to Pearl Harbor .
He said the radar showed bogies, and the chain of communication on our part was broken, leading to senseless slaughter in Hawaii on December 7
I asked him, was Pearl Harbor a false flag? It could have been, we just wouldn’t have gotten involved without it’ and nobody is saying much about it.
I asked, were the nukes really necessary? My father the former American History teacher said the argument at that time was that the nukes saved a million lives Fin we had to invade Japan, but Japan was already in ruins and flame but those 2 cities. Japan was in the White House trying to surrender while nukes were dropping.

Tim points out, correctly, the difference between socialism and social programs. To take it one step further, all of the Scandinavian countries mentioned are currently experiencing economic downturns and educational deficits because of their social programs. Ireland, Greece, and Italy went bankrupt because of their socialist leanings. Spain and France are heading there. Socialism does not work.

Wishing I was at the Fest this weekend. It’seems the perfect unwind for me after tax season. Unfortunately, one grand baby born on 10/15 and another on 10/23 so the BD celebration is somewhere in between.

I definitely have to plan my vote in future years to get back there. I am missing/pining for it this year.

    Go Dolphins!!!!!
