2018 Season – Game 9 – Jets @ Dolphins

Halfway there.  It ain’t pretty folks.  We started out 3-1, and we all had some hope for a successful season.  After all, seasons are broken up into 4 game quarters, and we were somehow a winning team after those first 4, although the crushing loss to the New England Patriots was a wake up call that not all was sunshine in Miami.  We started out the first 4 scoring 82 points, and surrendering 90 points, with nearly half of those 90 points coming against New England (38-7).  In the next 4 games, the Dolphins have gone 1-3, to even it up at 4-4.  In these next 4 games, we scored a little more, 92 points, but surrendered far more, 129 points, with the points given up each consecutive game getting worse, 27, 28, 32, and then 42 this past week to the Texans.  Not a good trend!

Although a 4-4 record may indicate a team that can do as much right as they can do wrong, unfortunately for our team, I feel it’s not like that at all.  I see us spiraling downward, which incidentally may end up in our favor if we want to draft one of the top QB’s next season, and IMO this has now become a necessity.  The QB that can lead us to great things, hope for playoffs and more, is NOT currently on the roster.  Unless Ryan Tannehill gets healthy and shows us another gear that he hasn’t yet brought to the table, he’s not the guy.  Unless Brock Osweiler shows he can consistently make good accurate throws, he’s not our guy.  Both are flawed, and neither is a championship caliber QB.

The next item is our current HC.  When he was hired, Adam Gase was considered one of the great, young, offensive minded coaches available.  Make no mistake, he truly was highly regarded and sought after, and I thought he may be the guy to bring our offense to new heights.  It seems as if he elevated Ryan Tannehill’s play, but unfortunately, the way he accomplished that is with a balanced attack offense, and a “make no mistakes” short passing attack.  Bill Belichick said “OK, I’ll just counter your smaller, faster WR’s with nickel, dime and quarter packages, let’s see you beat that!”  Well, we couldn’t.  Did he find a way to make TE Mike Gesicki make all those smaller DB’s pay?  No.  Did Frank Gore and Kenyan Drake run all over the smaller DB’s?  No.  Gase had no answer for that strategy, and now it’s not even the offense that is the current issue, it’s the defense.

In the first 4 games, our defense took the ball away 10 times, while our offense turned it over 6 times, a +4 TO differential.  Each game, however, our yardage allowed total began to swell, 336 yards in the win against the Titans, only 257 against the Jets, but 434 yards against the Raiders, and then 449 against the Patriots.  The next 4 is where it really starts to get ugly, and the turnovers that kept us in the win column dried up, but the opposing team’s yardage continues to increase.

In Game of 1 of the 2nd quarter of games, we lost to the Bengals, losing the turnover battle 3-1, while allowing a modest 332 total yards.  We turned it over 3 times, and forced 3 turnovers by the Bears, and won the game in OT, though allowing a hefty 467 yards, granted, this was with an extra 9:57 in OT.  Against the Lions, neither team turned the ball over, but we did manage to give up once again over 400 yards on defense, 457 to be exact.  We then got shellacked by the Texans, turning it over once while not managing to get a single turnover (or defensive stop!) against the Texans.  427 yards, and 42 points.

After 8 games, we’re scoring 21.8 PPG (174), and we’ve allowed 27.4 PPG (219).  We have forced 14 turnovers while giving it up 13 times.  After the first 3 games, we were 8-4.  Everything is getting worse, forcing HC Adam Gase to really sit down and look at everything, in an attempt to “fix” these problems.  I’m writing “angry”, so take all of this for what it’s worth, but shouldn’t he be trying to “fix” the problems every week?  This defense has been pathetic, surrendering tons of yards to our opponents, and now we’re also allowing tons of points too.  Our offense simply can’t keep up with that, we play too careful and calculated, and now with playmaker Albert Wilson on IR, the guy who turns a lateral or 2-5 yard forward passes into 50-60-70 + yard TD plays gone, how will we score TD’s?

This is part and parcel why I can’t bear to think the Miami Dolphins are going to force Ryan Tannehill down our throats for yet another failure of a season.  The NFL has changed, it’s getting closer to Arena football, except that you can’t really hit the offensive players.  It’s a WIDE OPEN game,  shootouts,  and we play small ball.  Teams are hitting HR’s everywhere, and  we’re bunting guys over looking to scratch out a run.  If it’s Tannehill, or Osweiler, or Fales that are holding this offense back, CUT them!  If it’s Adam Gase that just doesn’t have the right field general at QB, then FIND him!  Don’t insult us by going with the status quo, and telling us you’re going to “fix” the problem.  I watch a lot of football, I have the NFL Sunday ticket, and it’s blindingly clear that we cannot compete in this NFL as currently constituted.  We need a gunslinger, and we need DE’s that can pressure opposing QB’s.

11 sacks folks.  E-L-E-V-E-N.  8 games, 11 sacks.  That’s beyond anemic.  It’s the DT’s and the DE’s, but I’d prefer to blame the DE’s mostly.  (( Paging Charles Harris!)) (( Paging Charles Harris?))  Doesn’t matter who does the drafting for us, can ANYONE please identify a pass rusher? Robert Quinn?  HELLLOOOOOOO!  Did Quinn shoot his load in the preseason?  He was unstoppable!  Peaked too soon?  Don’t blame Cam Wake, he’s just about 37 years old, and probably should be a role player now, not a starting DE.  What happened to Cordrea Tankersley?  He seemed to progress last season, and can we please end the Bobby McCain on the boundary please?  If you put McCain back in the slot, at least that’s 2 spots (Howard/MCain) that are competent.

The Jets come to town being outscored in the last 2 games 61-27.  I’ve got the remedy for that!  The Dolphins have been outscored 74-44.  That should even the playing field some.  I’m seeing far too many similarities between Joe Philbin and Adam Gase.  Hey, when you win the AFC East every year for a freaking century like Bill Belichick has, you can cut whoever the heck you want with minimal blowback.  Adam Gase, he doesn’t have that cachet, nor does he deserve to at this point.  He seems to have identified the players he likes, and has jettisoned the ones he doesn’t, but having success while doing so helps your cause.  We’re spiraling downward, and while it’s possible the Jets offer us a brief respite, the Green Bay Packers in Lambeau will not, and either will the Colts, who are scoring 29 PPG.

Game 9, and it’s hard to find one thing that we do really well.  ST’s have been one of our best units, Matt Haack averaging 45.7 yards, and rookie Jason Sanders 9 of 10 in FG’s, of course along with Jakeem Grant with a punt return and kick return for TD’s.  Gase has a lot of work to do, and I hope he has his scouts looking far and wide for our next QB, that is if he’s still here to see it through.  Most likely he will be given some latitude.

So, on to the Jets.  Sam Darnold has been “eh”.  Jeremy Bates and Todd Bowles do not an offensive juggernaut make.  Bowles is a defensive minded coach, and Bates hasn’t been an OC since back in 2010 for SEA, he’s been an assistant coach all these years (QB coach).  Darnold has thrown for 1705 yards, 11 TD’s and 10 INT’s.  The Jets had to put RB Bilal Powell on IR with a neck injury, which leaves Isaiah Crowell as the feature back, with Trenton Cannon and De’Angelo Henderson as depth.  Losing Powell really hurts the Jets, he usually saved a lil something for us in our clashes.  Robbie Anderson occasionally supplies some fireworks, but it’s a pretty boring offense most times with Quincy Enunwa (Jarvis Landry) and Terrelle Pryor and Jermaine Kearse.  The Jets recently signed Rishard Matthews, so maybe Rishard will get an opportunity to take out his frustrations on our defense.Jets defense has been just about mid-pack, nothing to get excited about.

My prediction?  After all the thinking and analyzing in an attempt to remedy what has been ailing us, Gase finds a way to win against another struggling team this week.  I think we win this one by about 4 or 5 points, no score prediction, I have no idea what team we’ll see on either side of the ball.

Much as have bitched about how big money teams buy championships (or at least a shot at them) in baseball…. I’m cool with how football has it set up. If a salary cap means a whole bunch of middling teams, they are still middling teams with a fair chance.

I bet there are a lot of teams over the last 25 years tht are around .500
And I do think parrity is a major factor for that

That aspect actually worries me less than the fact that we are never a team that wins 12 or more games and never a contender

We are never really a good

Record means nothing when you are playing like we are. We are blessed to be 4-4, we play like we haven’t won a game and really dont know how to. We have had 1 really good game and that was against the Bears, the other wins haven’t been very impressive and yet the losses have been extremely bad performances. There isn’t much to get excited about when you are beating teams that most everyone else is also beating and you are barely beating them and then are getting thrashed by teams that are just a little better than average. Its easy to see that we are not legit.

You would think that we would catch lightning in a bottle once over the last 4 decades, and win a SB. That is why not winning one when Marino was playing was so dis-heartening. It is like we are somehow being punished by the football gods for wasting his carreer…LOL. (Like San Diego with Fouts, Buffalo with Kelly, and Minnesota with Tarkenton) I am not counting GETTING to the SB as a success either….only wins.

Something is just not right. I could care less how we do it, or who is the QB at this point…Just win one SB before I die!

Yeah, but we arent at the end of the season. Pats once more, GB, Vikings and a red hot Colts team in their house. That doesn’t look good for playoff discussion more like a 8-8 or worse discussion.

See what i replied above, we have some tough opponents left. If we cant do a complete 180 we really have no shot at playoffs. Right now we would have to play really well just to get to 9-7 and that might not be enough for playoffs. Im thinking more 8-8 or worse.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I don’t disagree with ya, but you’d swear we just got eliminated from the playoffs yesterday. Not the case. There’s still enough time to miracle ourselves over this obstacle.

I kind of see it as eliminated from the playoffs, considering it doesnt look like we have a hope in hell of making it with this team playing like they are. The team sucks the hope out of you by completely coming unraveled in games like they have been

  13. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Someone has to turn the lights on in here for at least a moment. Just for some clarity. The Saints under Sean Payton with Drew Brees started off:
    2006 10-6
    2007 7-9
    2008 8-8
    2009 13-3 winning a Super Bowl.

Not saying we win a Super Bowl next year, just that it doesn’t always go so smoothly right of the bat in that quest. Payton was also a first time HC and they stuck with him and he’s still there.

    • D's avatar D says:

Gase will get at least one more year im sure, and he is running a similar pattern. Still the Saint were looking completely fluid on one side of the ball, they just had no defense. We arent nearly as potent on offense as the Saint have been every year. We dont really have any one thing just working for us, neither side is consistent nor are they showing signs of dominance.

    • D's avatar D says:

Also Paytons teams looked legit, thee wasn’t questions that when they played they were trending the right way. Thats really not the case with us. Outside of the records, i dont see anything thats similar between those two team comparisons

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim, the Saints have a future HOF QB, we have Tannehill and Osweiler

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Did I not say that? Even with Brees it took them 4 years to get their program where it needed to be. I mentioned that right from the start. LOL

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You said they turned it around with Brews, yes, but can you expect us to do that without a quality QB? If your plea is to give Gase more time, he’ll probably get it

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

        lol- Brees

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No I said even with Brees it took them 4 seasons together to get to the top. It didn’t go smoothly even with him right off the bat. And he’s friggin Drew Brees.

    ———————
I do agree with ya, D… it seems hopeless right now. However, stranger things have happened! 🙂

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, so you remember all the details of those Saints seasons? Again that was with Drew Brees who everyone agrees is far superior to Tannehill or any other QB we’ve had to play. In fact Brees has been far superior than most QBs in the league during his career including still to this day.

I use Sean Payton as an example because if he was available when Parcells took over the Dolphins he would have likely been our HC being that he coached under Parcells in Dallas. And I can almost guarantee if he got off to a slow start we would have been calling for his head after 3 seasons.

My point is constantly changing the HC has not been working but let’s keep doing it. Maybe just maybe that is why we’ve been stuck in mediocrity for 15 years. I say 15 years because we were a perennial playoff team from 97-02 and finished 10-6 missing the playoffs in 03. 2004 is when it all came apart and we’ve been struggling for consistency in winning ever since. Just some food for thought. But go ahead and tear it apart. I started my post with turning the lights on for a least a moment. LOL

  17. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I’m not trying to rip your point. I understand what you’re saying, and I agree that continuity can be a good thing. It’s something you want, for sure. But, that is just one isolated example that really has nothing to do with this team. Gase is nothing like Payton. And, as you stated, they have a HOF-caliber QB. There really is no comparison or analogy to draw. Each team and situation is uniquely different. If you aren’t starting with a coach like Payton and a QB like Brees, the scenario is completely different and sticking with it simply may not be the answer. The comparison crumbles because the variables are drastically different.
    ***
Gase just isn’t the caliber offensive mind and playcaller Payton is. If he were, maybe he turns this thing around, but I certainly haven’t seen that in him. Payton always showed that he had a really great offensive mind. Their record didn’t always reflect that but you could see it in how he called a game and ran his offense. Do we really see that same potential in Gase? I don’t know. Maybe it’s too soon, but he needs to start showing he can be that sort of coach….or I think you move on.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I get it. But it’s not the only example, just the one I chose.

This is Gase’s 3rd season and we have a lot of young players still trying to find their way. We’ve also been decimated by injuries at key positions. Only a few weeks ago everyone liked the way we were trending. A few bad losses and once again it’s blow it all up.

I’m not saying Gase will turn around, at least not this season. I don’t like how we’ve looked recently either. I also know we don’t have the roster we started the season off with either. We can’t keep losing quality players and be the same team.

Payton also didn’t have to use multiple QBs during his run like Gase has. Gase has started 5 different QBs in less than 3 seasons. I would say that isn’t ideal.

Maybe we need to keep going with younger players, suck it up for a season or two and see what we have. What happened prior to Gase has no bearing on what he’s trying to build here.

The main gist of my post is maybe it’s time to stay the course for once.

  18. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I could write an entire story about this, but I’d rather keep it short. In the offseason, Adam Gase was asked by a reporter about our O-Line being a constant problem for the Phins. Gase replied that the QB should get the ball out in under 2.’x’ seconds, every time.

Gase seemed to indicate that the O-Line should be nothing more than a speed-bump for defenders, because the QB will have already gotten rid of the ball. I did NOT care for that answer: it would mean ‘dink-and-dunk’, all day.

So I ask… is this all a matter of design to mask Tannehill’s deficiencies? I mean, we’ve seen what has happened in the past when Tanny has time in the pocket: it’s either a sack (and fumble), an INT, or a poorly thrown ball.

And as a matter of consistency, Gase didn’t call games like this for Peyton Manning in Denver, nor for Jay Cutler in Chicago. Throw out what ya saw from Cutler last year under Gase, being the Offensive roster was set up Tannehill… plus Cutler was rusty, broken ribs, unfamiliar with his teammates, etc. I recall Manning and Cutler throwing deep and often.

So if Gase is making our Offense 1-dimensional (dink-and-dunk) in an effort to minimize Tannehill’s mistakes, I think he’s part of the problem. He’s gotta take the training wheels off and open up our Offense.

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – I agree changing coaches constantly is not a good thing. I’m not sure Gase is the guy, and I don’t want to fire him now, but I’d like to see something that makes me feel like he’s the right guy

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think a big issue is Tannehill’s injuries and have thrown a monkey wrench into the plan. Regardless of what you think of him, when you’re trying to build your plan around a QB and he goes down it’s not ideal. I have no issue with drafting a QB to add to the mix and if Tannehill can’t turn it around or both health wise and/or in performance, you’ve got a young buck to roll with that has had at least some time in the system waiting in the wings.

At this point the way the core of this team has been being built with young players, I’d keep rolling that way. Nobody thought we were Super Bowl bound yet anyway so who cares if it takes another year or two?

In the offseason maybe it’s time to let some vets making significant money go and go younger. Then in a couple of years you have a totally different roster. Even in FA target solid first time FAs not break the bank types, players in their 5th to 6th seasons and let the twilights go. That’s enough experience for leadership. They’ve been through enough seasons to gain valuable experience. We would also have some in-house young players with valuable experience now. Build on it, don’t keep starting over.

If you want to go in another direction at QB it’s likely going to take at least a couple of years anyway.

I haven’t heard of anyone on Cleveland’s shortlist to succeed Hue Jackson, but I know somebody who could bring the BEST out of their talent: DAN CAMPBELL. I hope he gets the job… he’s earned it, IMO.

  22. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I can’t say sticking with Gase wouldn’t be the right move. I think it’s mostly on the players anyway. But, most guys don’t get much more than 3 or 4 years to prove they can do the job in the NFL nowadays. Nobody sticks with coaches who don’t win unless you’re Cleveland. Lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Perennial bad teams change coaches too often. Even Hue Jackson didn’t make it a full 3 seasons. What people forget about Cleveland is management screwed that team over for years before him and while he was HC. It’s still early but the Baker Mayfield hype has cooled down and I’m not sure he’s the answer either.

  23. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  24. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Gase’s ultimate undoing will be sticking with Tannehill for too long, IMO.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Oh… and not just Tannehill, but for sticking with HIS guys (Brock Osweiler and David Fales) too long.

Should have drafted a QB this past draft, in order to give him a shot in year 4.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tannehill has played 18 games with Gase since he’s been here. It’s Gase’s 3rd season 2.5 into it. That’s too long to you? Their record together is 11-7.

He does have Luke Faulk to work with next year who was drafted in the 6th rd by TEN this year. We can draft a QB next year.

So you’re saying Gase is wrong for going with “his” guys as opposed to “yours”? LOL

  25. Randy's avatar Randy says:

M13, Hankins hasn’t been very good in OAK. He’s overrated IMO.
    ————
His contract was for roughly $1M. We really could have used that BIG body here to replace Phillips. But the fact of the matter is that Hankins was signed by the Raiders before we cut Phillips.

My beef is that we never prepared for life without a BIG body, in the event the radical up-and-down play of Phillips didn’t pan out… whether it be injury or otherwise.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Translation: I wanted us to sign Hankins to be a backup to Phillips… or at least to join the rotation.

I think you make too much out of just a big body. Pittman is 320. Godchaux is 315. So a few more lbs. makes all the difference? We don’t play a NT. That’s not the scheme.

I think the biggest issue with the defense is they look unorganized and have communication breakdowns too often. We’ve seen them play solid when that isn’t happening.

NO, man! I’m talking about a traditional 4-3 NG (NOT a 3-4 NT), which is essentially what we had in Jordan Phillips.

We’d shown interest in Dontari Poe last year, who is EXACTLY that: a 4-3 NG.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Okay agree to disagree. The scheme we play is not based on that. Remember the plan was a 4 man rotation. We released Phillips who wasn’t playing up to par so not sure why you keep revisiting that. So when Phillips wasn’t on the field who was the 4-3 NG? Obviously guys play differently in some play calls but the scheme is to attack and get up field, not hold ground and read and react. Like it or not, that is the scheme.

    ————————————————————
Tannehill at 26mil next year would be a mistake. Tanny should be gone next year despite if we are going to let a player sit behind a veteran or not. There is 0 reason to pay him that much. I would cut him if he didnt take a sizeable pay cut.

Tannehill was not leading us to anything more than we are doing right now. There is no way you should be able to reasonably feel we would be anything more than 4-4 with him.

I have said multiple time Gase is likely getting another year, and 2 if he makes a QB change to justify giving that new QB time to settle into the system. I dont see him getting but one more if he rolls Tanny out there again especially paying him 26mil to give us another 7-9 or 8-8 season.

You replace guys who arent working, or arent providing you the boost to your team that justifies their pay. It was done to Suh and Pouncey recently and you were in support of those. The problem is one of the names thats being associated with a needed change is one your completely wrapped up in. He is as much your guy as any of the guy that M13 roots for that you call him out on blindly supporting.

Tanny isnt worth 26mil, he just isnt, we arent getting 26mil (elite QB money) out of him. No problem with him being our vet stand in until we get a rookie up to speed, but pay him like a vet stand in or cut him and get a guy who will be ok with that designation and pay. We can use the 13 mil we save from cutting him to help this team out in other spots.

The only thing i agree with you about is that it will take patience with a new QB to get there, but i dont think as the rest of your post reads is that we should ride with Tanny as the QB under current contract until then and we should leave Gase as the coach until then.

Tanny staying should be about his money matching his production, he’s and 8-8 QB and should be paid like one. Gase’s staying or going should be about if he can at least get us to 8-8 this season. He has had some adversity, but a good coach handles adversity better than he has, and his staff has. If he cant at least get us back to playing in a respectable manner, and not looking like the joke we have started looking like, then h needs to go period. If he can he has earned another year and if he drafts his QB of the future, an additional one to see how we pan out with his guy. After that who knows, guess we just see how those two years go. This one is in the trash.

While I can’t imagine going through the whole reload process again, I also can’t imagine Gase changing his tendencies at this point either. First year of Gase I thought he was refreshing. Second year I started to see repeated mistakes (IMO) and tendencies like the over use of bubble screens and the terrible bend but don’t break defense and now in year 3 I don’t see any improvement. I NEVER liked or wanted Tannenbum as our GM and was hoping Gase would be the answer. Like many feel about Tannehill, I feel that way about Gase now. It sucks. 1/2 way through the season and I want the entire front office / coaching staff gone.

More than anything though…I WANT A NEW LONG SNAPPER!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You’re entitled to your opinion. I don’t share it on the same level. You can’t keep losing quality players and then having backups and others not executing and have success. If talent means something, then playing lots of backups at once means something too.

It’s a funny thing, injuries are never excuses for us but I see fans point it out for every other team. Well they were without him or them or they were ravaged by a ton of injuries. Talent matters and we’ve had to patchwork this team all season. We’re also relying on a lot of young players still finding their way. It is what it is and it’s hardly ideal.

Let me ask you this, did you like the plays to Wilson that resulted in big plays and TDs that helped us win? It’s more about execution than play calls. Every team is running the same shit these days. When it works nobody says anything. When it doesn’t it’s play calls.

Now I’m not saying there aren’t some head scratchers here and there, but I see that with every team in every game. The difference is the consistency of execution and we keep losing the guys who are a part of making that happen.

Let’s see where we go from here. This team needs a win at home against the Jets.

I want to throw an opposing theory to the ‘bad teams change coaches too often’. Maybe, it’s ‘bad teams pick bad coaches’. I saw McVay almost instantly find success. Andy Reid, almost instant success. Shula, Baltimore, then went to the Phins, and almost instant success. Walsh won a SB in Year 34. Vermeil, Cowher, Parcells. Even with less stellar coaches, like Schottenheimer, Coryell, Tomlin, etc, they’ve had much greater success than failure. Gase is going to have a losing record after this year. He’s also going to have the same exact issues that have plagued his team during his entire tenure here; poor offense, slow starts, poor run D, inconsistency, penalties, poor coaching staff.

If you look at great coaches, only Belichick had a rough start that lasted a significant time. Payton got to the playoffs with a top 5 offense his first year and continued to have a great offense. His team may have regressed before they broke through but they were at least good at offense. We have great…special teams….

My biggest problem with Gase is that not only are problems not fixed, they recur year after year. . We find average coaches and we keep them about as long as we can. We need to continue looking for that exceptional coach while also looking for the franchise QB. Both are necessary and Gase isn’t in that category.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

  57. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Gase has been trying to duplicate the successes he had with Peyton Manning, he’s way too pass happy, Most teams that pass more than run lose, while he’s developing a good core of rec’s he’s throwing a blind eye to a physical running game. in short yardage he elects to pass.

the run and shoot does not work in the NFL, Gase is an easy read.

    • Peyton Manning called Gase the smartest person in the room because he knew enough to leave Manning alone and let him run the offense. He’s in over his head and believed all the hype about how good he was at what he did but didn’t realize he was nowhere near being ready.
Fire everyone from the top down. Bring in Harbaugh to head up football operations and do the HC search. The team needs a football guy at the top and Tannenbaum isn’t it. Harbaugh gives them a more solid foundation and validity as an organization and then they can build from there.

But I do understand the angle of hiring him.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just like in the NFL, an agent like Drew Rosenhaus knows the league and who the top players are, but he’s not drawing up plays and schemes. It’s all about talent acquisitions one way or the other.

At this point, being that we did not trade off any pitchers at the deadline, we can go into next year with deGrom, Syndergaard, Wheeler, Matz and Gesllman. That’s a pretty damn good 5 man rotation. It’s all about durability with pitchers.

Pretty sure you have to add Vargas into the rotation, and depending on the health of the other guys you mentioned, Lugo may be pressed into starter action if necessary. We have good depth there, as long as everyone is healthy, which never seems to happen. We need some quality bats. Cespedes will be out 2-3 months for sure, and mybe more, and we can’t go into this year with that same anemic lineup of Smith 1B, McNeil/T.J. Rivera 2B, Rosario SS, Frazier 3B, Bruce RF, Nimmo CF, and Conforto LF. They need much more production out of 1B and 3B, so maybe Peter Alonso gets a shot at 1B, we still need a major upgrade at 3B and in the OF too.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think we’re going to see some moves and transition in the offseason. It’s very early but there is a bit of a core to start with and production is always key. With Cespedes not in the fold much for 2019, maybe later in the season, we need to be more of a rally team, not wait for power.

Peter Alonso is the dark horse. Is he ready for the bigs? He was awesome in the minors. At 23 coming off of AA and AAA with a combined .285 36 HR, 119 RBI, 92 RS. Who else are we playing at 1B? Dominic Smith should compete but he’s trending downwards.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s Smith and Bruce at 1B, especially if they get a better bat and fielder for the OF. I’d prefer not to rely on Bruce with his foot in the OF. He missed a ton of time this year, and when he played, he was awful in the OF, and didn’t hit either. We need more quality bats. Not sure where they’re coming from. McNeil looks like a nice hitter, I hope he continues that.

        OD,

Ross isn’t going to last much longer but it will be interesting who takes it next. I might be one of those guys. I said I was tired of all the early OL draft picks that either didn’t pan out or weren’t coached up to excellence. I see plenty of lower drafted starters all over the NFL, so why can’t we do the same? We both know why. Same reason we are depending on a 36 yr old DE.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Who were the starters at the start of the season and who is still standing? Tell me Mr. GM what would you have done because you’re so awesome at it? And would you be able to predict who stays healthy and not? That’s what we need, that kind of insight. You like to throw this sort of shit out there at people without any commentary on the current status. So who we should have drafted and when Mr. Expert?

Between you and M13 we should have drafted multiple OL, a top backup QB who could be the future and then every other position as well. Do you have any names and hows or just more 20/20 hindsight? LOL, LOL, LOL

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Do you really hold Ross that accountable and why? How about the other 20+ teams who haven’t won big in recant times? What’s the criteria that you seek? 14 different teams have participated in the last 10 Super Bowls and 8 different teams have won it since Ross was a majority owner over his 9 year tenure. 2010 was Ross’ first season as majority owner.

Just looking for an honest answer?

OK, I’m watching Marvel’s Dare Devil on Netflix. How does he “see” with his ears? What gave him that superpower? Also, only on season 1ep4 but does he ever upgrade and get the real costume? Also, you would think his costume wouldn’t cover his ears if that is what he is depending on to see. if he is using sonic echos wouldn’t he be batman?

    Tim,

I didn’t want to write from memory so I looked up all the coaches mentioned. All were very successful very early outside of Belichick and Payton. Belichick was his second time around which wouldn’t help us and Payton always fielded an excellent offense(Brees being a huge part of that).

If the continued failures of Gase aren’t considered accurate, then statistically…they are accurate. Slow starts, bad offense, lots of penalties, poor run D, poor overall defense. They may not be all on him but this is his baby.

    What exactly is inaccurate?

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

      Well articulated. ^^

Why I want a new GM, HC and program.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Really? Their first two seasons:
      SF Bill Walsh 8-24
      NYG Bill Parcells 12-19

If you guys want to ignore facts to fit your commentary go right ahead. It’s so subjective and obviously biased so have it. LOL

I root for the Miami Dolphins, not any of your skewed opinions on history. I know many of you won’t even touch the facts because it destroys your narrative. It doesn’t mean anything to me because I know the facts. They only count when it means something to you and your own opinion.

Be honest about history. It sets you free. You know why? Because it’s fact.

All of your predictions about Gase are not fact. It’s your current emotional opinions. You might be right though. It’s admirable to make the playoffs and make it to big games.

      But you want greatness?

How’s this for ya? OD this is specifically for you since you live in a bubble and love to call people out. Don Shula lead his teams to many winning seasons. But look at his real legacy in big games.

Not so easy on the eyes is it? LOL, LOL, LOL

I’ve noticed there are some people on the board who only show up when things go bad, so they can crow “I told you.” Then there’s a few that crow “told you” when either good or bad things happen. What is this need for validation?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Then there’s the few to crow when we are winning, “told you”. Unfortunately, they’ve been run off the board.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I can understand crowing about winning. That’s what fans should do. I don’t know who has been run off the board for that.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Apologies… not ALL have been run off the board… but you’re trying your very best to do so.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Am I now? Don’t try so hard to be cryptic. Who have I run off? David? Nah…he still comes around with his socialist silliness. You’re still here, even though I occasionally harass you about things you say and your melodramatics. Like when you try to be cryptic and obtuse. Lou? Nah, he’s a douche, but knows he’s a douche. OD? Nope still here despite my occasional exasperation with unrealistic calls for ownership to give the team away. I don’t want you guys to leave. I like you guys. Well, maybe not David. I have no use for socialists.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Ya think! LOL

Some people revel in it. It’s all good but don’t expect to be taken seriously. LOL, LOL, LOL

  84. D's avatar D says:

Didn’t realize that ER but I figured it could be the case. I didn’t even push for the discount this year so I’m paying full ticket price too. Oh well.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I heard they went down hard last weekend. Did you lose your feed?

      • D's avatar D says:

I never watch on a streaming feed. Probably should look into it cause that subscription is pricey. I love football so I do like having it, and it’s just upsetting to me that the team I buy it for is hard to watch lol. I’m bitching about spilled milk at this point though. I’m salty and just want for the games I watch to be prettier pictures.

  85. D's avatar D says:

I don’t think comparing one coach to another is relevant. It’s definitely not scientific or logical. The opinion of Gase not being adequate is in the current state of our team and there isn’t anything historical that adds to or takes away from those facts. He isn’t doing a great job at keeping this team focused. He definitely over thinks small play calls that most coaches see as automatic. I can’t say he isn’t or can’t be a good coach, but if it waddles has a watertight ass, and quacks it’s probably not an overweight scuba diver with a duck call, the answer is probably the more obious one

  86. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Alright, I’m audi.

Phelon, you need to get OVER yourself, Bro. I realize that your latest ‘schtick’ is about clowing, but it doesn’t fit you well. May I remind you of our winning ways with my 9:40 PM post above. I’d like it if you didn’t clown those that acknowledge how we won in ’16, with your blind ‘homerism’ that is Adam Gase.

Could you PLEASE propose positivity, instead of crapping on others?

    I don’t see you proposing positive changes… THAT’S REAL

If UCF wins out they deserve a shot at the title.

Temple comes in on Thursday. They announced today that there will be a A-10 warthog flyover for this game. They come right over my house when they have them, it’s pretty cool.
Next Saturday (10th) Navy comes here, that’ll make for a madhouse here. A quality opponent as well. They’re just coming off ND handing them their ass.

  91. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Wyo, UCF would give any one of those teams a good game. They wouldn’t be favored over any of them and they wouldn’t get embarrassed either. They’re a very fast team and that offense puts up a lot of points.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

      I say Michigan and Florida!
That get’s you in the top 10!

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

2 straight (should it happen) undefeated seasons are what should get them a shot. That’s very hard to do no matter the schedule, but they play a fair amount of legit teams.

  92. D's avatar D says:

I think UCF is one of the teams that I think makes a good argument for 6-8 team playoffs. I think at minimum there should be 6 involved.

  93. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    I’ll give you ND too.
    Not sold on them!
Did look good the one game I watched though?

  94. D's avatar D says:

Imo the key to UCF winning is going Florida throttle and get as many points early as they can. Their depth is what would kill them they aren’t stacked with all Americans 3 deep at all positions like most the other teams.

  95. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    It looks good for someone!
Only Alabama will be in from the SEC this year!

    • D's avatar D says:

Georgia can still get in and Kentucky

      • D's avatar D says:

Kentucky and Georgia still have to play one another. That will give the other a top 10 win and a trip to the championship. So it could happen

      • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Georgia will get their second loss in the SEC championship!
        Which will knock them out!

      • D's avatar D says:

I think Kentucky might take the east this year. They would give Alabama a tough game in the championship too. Their offense is ball control and they are good at it. I’m most surprised by that team as any other, they have a magic bubble floating around them right now

  96. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’re being decimated by injuries but stop focusing on that. Just like the draft. Talent means nothing so why bother? Injuries to core players mean nothing. So the draft means nothing. Talent doesn’t matter. No excuses. You play with who you have. That’s it. Right?

Why are any of you talking about draft picks. They don’t matter. You play with what you have. Right?

Just blame people when you lose all of those players. No biggie! You draft next year and sign players here and there that weren’t on other teams because that fills the void. Right?

    Easy peasy! Wow!
