2018 Season – Game 10 – Dolphins @ Packers

I was watching Good Morning Football this morning on NFLN, and after showing highlights of the Panthers vs Bucs (42-28), and Saints vs Rams (45-35), yeah, it looks pretty wrong seeing 13-6, Dolphins over Jets.  Kay Adams and Kyle Brandt presented it as a good ole 1990’s defensive struggle, a throwback.  They got it all wrong, this wasn’t a defensive struggle, it was an offensive struggle.  Jets rookie QB Sam Darnold didn’t get the memo that his team was wearing the white jerseys, because he threw better passes to the dark jerseys than he did to the white jerseys.  If you want to credit our pass rush, which actually existed yesterday, feel free to do so.  On our side, we couldn’t block (run or pass), we got one defensive TD and two FG’s.  Light it up!

I’m not singling anyone out here, but our O-line play was just terrible, and of course as per usghe, injuries were the reason for this.  Both tackles missed time in this game forcing Zach Sterup to man both the RT spot when James was hurt, and then slide over to the LT spot when James came back in and Laremy Tunsil got hurt.  So now Brock Osweiler, who I will say has better pocket awareness than Ryan Tannehill has ever had, has no pocket awareness because players were on him in 1 second or less.  Our O-line isn’t good with all our starters in there, but subtract one of our tackles, who are our 2 best OL, Tunsil #1, James #2, it really goes downhill.

I don’t want to knock the optimists here, because it’s wonderful that fans can still believe we’re in this, but I laugh inside  (a sad laugh) when fans say “Oh, not good, the Chargers won, gonna be tough to catch them”.  From what I have seen this year, we don’t belong on the same field as the Chargers, they score 28 PPG, and we’ve scored more just once this year, in OT, and never more in regulation.  We’ve had injuries, but we still have Devante Parker, Kenny Stills, Jakeem Grant, David Amendola, and Mike Gesicki.  We have Frank Gore and Kenyan Drake, a formidable 1-2 punch, yet our offense is putrid.  Yeah, we’re 5-4, easily the worst 5-4 team in the NFL.  We’re the only 5-4 team.

My guess is we’re probably going to have Brock Osweiler as QB one more time as we hit the BYE week, and then after the BYE, it will be Ryan Tannehill’s team once again.  We travel this week to Wisconsin to take on the Packers in their house.  This is an angry Pack team, having lost to the Patriots in Foxboro.  Anyone know who the OC is for GB?  Tee-hee, it’s Joe Philbin.  Not even kidding.  Possibly, this explains how the GB Packers are only scoring 24 PPG, just a few more than our Dolphins.  Hey, is it bad that Saints WR Michael Thomas accounted for more yardage and scoring by himself with 211 yards and 1 TD, while we accumulated as a team 203 yards and no TD’s?

It’s easy for Belichick to do whatever he wants, he’s beyond reproach at this point, no one questions the master.  How smart does he look using Cordarrelle Patterson as a RB?  Can we get some of that ingenuity from our offensive genius Adam Gase?  Don’t bet on it.    I wish he would read this and it would inspire him, but I won’t bet on that either!  I wish something would inspire him, maybe keeping his job, something like that.

I know Toba, Bookman and ER are attending the GB game, I hope they enjoy and I hope our team gives them a great game to watch and a Dolphins victory!  Enjoy fellas, way to represent!

The Tampa Bay Times is reporting that guard Ted Larsen is doubtful and that Tunsil & James are questionable with multiple injuries. I know I’m beating a dead horse but, here we are, after just 9 games, and our O-Line is in DEEP SHIT just as I predicted during summer camp!! Instead of drafting high quality YOUNG offensive linemen, Miami’s FO and HC decided to go with older retreads who, guess what, BROKE DOWN DURING THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON resulting in yet ANOTHER SERIOUS INJURY TO OUR STARTING QUARTERBACK!! THE ABSOLUTE LUNACY OF ROSS AND HIS FRONT OFFICE CONTINUES TO AMAZE ME!!! –And if you think for a moment that our current 5-4 record proves me wrong, just watch our boys get crushed again at some point later this season. You can’t win consistently in this league with a well below average to horrid O-Line and well below average quarterbacking.
    ————————-
UNLIKE ROSS, i’ll be watching TV today searching for a college QB and some quality O-Linemen and D-Linemen who MIGHT be able to plug some of the gaping holes in Miami’s roster. I agree with those above who say we need a major upgrade at QB. West Virginia’s Will Grier almost certainly will be drafted before Miami’s 1st round pick. But if Miami could trade picks and move up to take JORDAN, maybe they could do the same to grab the QB they’ve been missing THIS ENTIRE CENTURY!!! Grier’s performances this season has been truly impressive. Could he be “The Guy?” Another possibility is Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray, who has said he’ll become a pro BASEBALL PLAYER after this season. But, this season, Murray has passed Tua Tagovailoa and is now the nation’s leader in passing efficiency (216.59). He has the added benefit of being able to SCRAMBLE, a prime necessity when playing behind Miami’s leaky and injury prone O-Line. Would the NFL’s mega-bucks possibly change Murray’s mind about baseball?? An interesting question. But I’d prefer a QB who is totally committed to FOOTBALL!! That said, Mr. Elway actually pitched several games for the YANKEES organization when he refused to play for the COLTS!! People DO change their minds, especially YOUNG PEOPLE!!
    ————————
And speaking of “YOUNG PEOPLE,” I’ll be watching ALABAMA again, this time focusing on stud O-Lineman Jonah Williams and stellar D-Lineman Quinnen Williams. BOTH of these Crimson Tide stars are potential fits for our beloved Dolphins. And I’m SURE MF-13 and others on this board will be watching their favorite college stars with an eye toward the future draft. Perhaps NOW someone in Miami’s FO (ALL of whom should be worried about their jobs) will realize that this team can NOT compete successfully for a Super Bowl with the current talent level at QB, O-Line and D-Line. We’ve GOT TO GET BETTER!!

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

SOMETHING that impacts me, directly. The next 3 Super Bowls will be played close to where I live. The 2019 Super Bowl will be played about 475 miles up I-75 in Atlanta. The 2020 Super Bowl will take place right here in Tampa. And the 2021 Super Bowl will be at Hard Head Stadium in Miami Gardens. We have NO CHANCE for the Atlanta SB. But, as Don Shula proved, you can take a team to a Super Bowl, a team that won only 3 games in 1969, to a Super Bowl two seasons later. Oh how I would love to see us win a Super Bowl in the Sunshine State!! – – – The clock of Father Time is clicking for me.

I have a bigger issue with playcalling and coaching. And the never ending OL problems. And don’t anyone jump in with “they didn’t draft my fav” whining. They have drafted OL early and often for years running. Why can’t they coach these guys up to be at least serviceable? Is it scheme? Strength and conditioning?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Fucking bad luck is what it is. No matter who we plug in on that line, they get hurt. Our bookends have been pretty solid , but the interior, UGH! Dan Kilgore played every game the last couple of years, no injuries. Same goes for Josh Sitton. They come here, and BOOM!

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

It’s the old Chicken salad made with chicken shit!
I know we cleaned out the scouting department a couple of years ago!
and seem to have figured out who to draft lately????

If we can keep drafting talent we will get there eventually!

But that’s the first place I would look is Talent Evaluation!

By the way Ross can throw as much money as he wants to at that!!!!!!!!

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OD – We’ve had about 5 or 6 OL injured. No front office can account or plan for something like that. I know the Redskins just lost 2 OG’s last week, so keep an eye on that team, and see how they handle losing just 2 guys.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

And we got 5-6 OL injured BECAUSE OUR FO relied on TOO MANY OLDER RETREADS, Mike!! We need an owner who picks better people to run his team. Better people could “coach-up” the young players we draft and get more out of them. Giving up on drafting young O-Linemen is an idiotic concept guaranteed to kill your team!

STUPID as in NO PLAYOFF WINS SINCE 2000.

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OD – I was very happy with signing OG Josh Sitton, the guy was a great player, a player without an injury history. You’re not being completely fair about this in my opinion. Kilgore I thought was an average player, maybe an upgrade in run blocking over Pouncey, but a downgrade in pass blocking. He also had a clean injury history. Tunsil is 24 YO and he’s hurting, and James is 26YO. How many OL were we supposed to carry? What do you do about the D-line injuries? You carry 15 OL and forget about the D-line? Young players do not mean “injury free”, just means young and inexperienced.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The two Redskins OL that were placed on IR last week, OG Brandon Scherff (26YO), and Arie Kouandijo (26YO). Young guys get hurt too. It sucks, but even if we drafted young guys, they get inured too.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

Mike: I WAS NOT HAPPY with bringing in older retreads and said so. DOES THAT MAKE ME NOT BEING TOTALLY FAIR?? I don’t think so.

The brutal truth is this. Miami selected Asiata in round 5 two drafts ago. So far, he’s been a bust. So we took someone’s advice and went with FREE AGENTS ONLY–NO OFFENSIVE LINEMEN–IN THE LAST DRAFT–WHICH I HAVE CONSISTENTLY OPPOSED. I guess I’m being penalized for being RIGHT!!

I BELIEVE a mixture of young draft choices in rounds prior to round 5 plus a free agent or two provides the best chance for success. But “success” and “T-BOMB” are rarely used in the same sentence when it comes to building a winning O-Line. I NEVER said “15 O-Linemen” or any other lie like that. Now who is being unfair, Mike??

YOU can pass-off our horrid O-Line as “bad luck” if you like. But when our run of “bad luck in the O-Line” runs 10 years, MAYBE it’s time to look at who is doing the picking. You can, if you like, defend management’s methods and mistakes ’till the cows come home. It DOESN’T MAKE THEM RIGHT!

The next owner of the Dolphins hopefully will understand that young, highly rated, O-Linemen coming out of college have less wear and tear than your average free agent who has already been passed on by his former employer who found him either declining in talent and/or overpriced. Now I’m NOT saying first year players don’t have career altering injuries nor am I saying that ALL F/A’s are lousy deals. I’m just saying that those who give up on drafting quality O-Linemen in rounds prior to round 5 are heading for trouble. And THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT MIAMI HAS DONE THE LAST TWO YEARS!! It’s a proven recipe for failure.

The Dolphins have been on many wrong courses during the reign of Steve Ross. This has been one of them.

..UNLIKE ROSS, i’ll be watching TV today searching for a college QB and some quality O-Linemen and D-Linemen who MIGHT be able to plug some of the gaping holes in Miami’s roster.
    ———————–
OD — are you saying you would prefer if Ross started scouting players and took the lead in personnel moves? 🙂

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

ACTUALLY, Jonathan, I’d like Ross to sell the team, something I told you 6-7 years ago! It’s a bitch WHEN YOU’RE RIGHT!!!!
      —————–
As for my preferences on what Ross should be watching on TV (which I predicted wouldn’t be searching for college talent), I’d prefer that he study the appropriate financial network for the RIGHT PERSON to sell the Dolphins to. Someone who 1)lives and spends more of his time in south Florida, rather than in New York City; 2) someone who will treat his season ticket holders fairly; 3) someone who, we all hope, will choose the right people to run his football team INSTEAD OF picking proven failures to run his team.

THAT would be a good start.

CHEERS to you and your lovely wife. And enjoy tomorrow’s game.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I know that OD — smiley face meant was just a friendly joke. But also making the point that I prefer an owner who stays out of player moves. My nightmare would be Jerry Jones….. would love the Roonies though.

    Re-iterating in itself is redundant.

    Mikey,
when are you having piss clam fest?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not expecting any of our games this year to have any real significance, but if you want to see all of us tied up in knots with frustration, I can plan a Patriots Piss Clam Fest. Would you really make the trip, or are you just playing around?

  19. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Speak of the OL, or Tanny and the Gene comes out of the bottle! 😉

    Who’s your top OL Randy??

And don’t give me no shit! I know you’ve been watching college ball! 🙂

  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Wyo

With all the injuries at the TE position we’ve had, we needed 5 TE’s. lol

  21. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

And for an outside p4rspective, Gil Brandt:

“Miami Dolphins (5-4): The Dolphins are a good team — but they’re not a great team. Give them a quality opponent, and they’ll struggle. Luckily for Miami, the remaining schedule features the Colts, Jaguars and Bills (twice), meaning there is a realistic chance for this group to finish 9-7, or maybe even 10-6 if the Fins can somehow steal one from the Packers, Patriots or Vikings. Adam Gase is doing a very good job with the Dolphins, who are showing resilience under the coach despite dealing with a glut of injuries, including a shoulder issue that will keep quarterback Ryan Tannehill out for his fifth game this year. For evidence of Gase’s genius, look no further than backup QB Brock Osweiler. In five games this season (four starts), Osweiler has a 63.8 percent completion rate, a TD-to-INT ratio of 6:3 and a passer rating of 91.1. In his past three seasons, he completed 59.2 percent of his passes with a 30:27 TD-to-INT ratio and a passer rating of 76.3. I ultimately like the Dolphins’ playoff chances less than the Titans’, but I could see Miami squeaking in. Gase just knows how to press the right buttons.”

  22. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Phelon – I wasn’t planning on going to Mee-AHMI, I was just going to have folks over to the Dolphins man cave to watch the game, and drink, and get especially inebriated.

  23. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Well I know it’s hindsight!
But it seems it was easier to pick up a TE mid-season than an OL?????????

  24. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

    Mike,
I’d rather not see Dolphins fans up in knots since I see enough of that here. lol I’d preferably see a game where we could possibly win like Buffalo at home, but who knows with the way this team is playing when one of those victories will be. I’d definitely come if there was something since I don’t live too far away, given it wasn’t scheduled on a weekend I had something going on.

  25. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

WYOMING: I have not yet decided WHO is the best O-Lineman in college ball yet this season.
PLUS, if I name him, that WILL GUARANTEE MIAMI WON’T TAKE HIM!!!
I remember naming the current starting center for the Vikings (from Ohio State) before the draft 2 years ago. He’s done pretty well since then, perhaps, partly because Miami didn’t take him!

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Would have been a great pick!
But we didn’t have a chance unless we moved up!

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

WELL, considering SOME of the horrid failures we’ve moved up for (Jordan, DT3, Carroo, etc., it would have taken far less than 3 draft choices to move up 10 or so spots to get him. Hell, if we’d taken the center from Ohio State in the 1st round we’d have gotten MORE out of THAT pick than we got out of a certain underperforming defensive end from the University of Misery!

Newage, if you are out there, I totally agree with your post yesterday about college QB’s. There will be some decent ones in the up coming draft but none I am crazy about. It’s that leadership/elevating the offense to another level thing. Thorson hasn’t done it this year. Finley hasn’t really done it (reminds of that last NC State QB drafted by Tampa I think, name escapes me). Haskins is just another OSU QB who is good for their system but won’t be much in NFL (IMO). Lock has been the best that I have seen but have not watched them all. I like Ian Book but he is Drew Brees size and only a Junior so he may return to ND next year. There are a couple sophomores who impress me who show that leadership and have elevated their teams. Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa reminds me of Patrick Mahomes. Texas QB Sam Ehlinger has really elevated the production of that Texas offense.

ACC- Findley has good size numbers and experience. Not a 1st but definitely draftable
PAC12- Menshew- great numbers, and his team is better than they should be. System QB but I like him a lot. Reminds me of Mason Rudolph.

Big12- Grier- great numbers, experience, good size. Arm is a question mark but Texas game raised his stock. Need to see more though.
Murray- system QB? Short, small, running QB so I think the negatives outweigh the comparisons to Wilson. Wilson also took years to become a solid QB while benefiting from a top notch defense and run game. Not on my radar.

    Big 10- no one
Notre Dame- Book is intriguing but not enough games. I’d like to see him come back next year and if still good, then a top pick.

I don’t know the small team QBs at all this year. I like Grier but not in the 1st. I like Menshew in the 3rd. Findley later than that. That’s really about it on the QBs I think would turn into solid starters or backups.

They’re friggin showing the Chargers/Raiders locally here. Really… the Raiders? The Packers are trying to get back into the playoff race with Aaron friggin Rodgers, and the Dolphins at 5-4 could make another push into the playoff race with a win. The Chargers are very good. The Raiders have sold their season soul. Bad choice!

  53. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kiko is finding his game again and he’s a tough SOB. He can do a lot of good things. He’s a speed chase LB. He’s not great at anything, but pretty damn good at everything. He also forces turnovers. He’s always chasing the ball. Even if he gets blocked for a big gain, he never stops playing and sometimes cleans up that play downfield with a tackle.

What we need is another game from Spence who dominated the Jets all game. He was pushing the interior OL into the backfield all day – other DL and front 7 fed off that, and that forced Darnold into a lot of rushed throws and inaccurate throws. Rodgers is a different beast as we all know. But it’s the same thing we need again. It’s the difference between 30 and 17 points allowed. Our secondary and LBs also had a lot of tight coverage. Good open field tackles too. The defense has to play like that again and even better because the Pack is more skilled. If they don’t we lose by two scores or more.

I have no idea what our OL is going to look like. That will play a major factor in this game.

    Justin Herbert, Oregon. 62.9%
    Drew Lock, Missouri. 56.1%
    Will Grier, West Virginia. 66.4%
    Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State.69.8%
    Ryan Finley, NC State. 64%
    Clayton Thorson, Northwestern. 58%
    Jarrett Stidham, Auburn. 64.7%
    Tyree Jackson, Buffalo. 56.2%

  56. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jerome Baker is also progressing nicely. He’s that undersized speed LB everyone has been wanting for 5 years or so. I admit I’ve always been skeptical about them holding up, but when they do they make a defense better. They can serve as 3 LB base or as a nickel. How many times has Baker chased down guys on big plays to prevent a score, 3-4 times? Live for another play and this defense has had a lot of good moments in the redzone. Baker has great range. He’s a rook who should only get better. It looks like we hit on that pick. Not only the nice pick 6 but he also is used as a stand up rusher to attack the backfield. The coaches see his speed and utilize it. He just needs experience. I think he has more upside.

  70. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – I would say this – Measuring anyone who plays QB in our offense here in Miami by their completion percentage is complete folly. We rarely throw the ball more than 5 yards, so it’s not always the best measure of accuracy. In other words, if you never watched us play, you might think, “Wow, Miami’s QB’s are pretty accurate at 63.8% and 65.9%”. Then if you turned on the film, you’d realize why they have a high completion percentage, and not a great representation of accuracy, considering most throws are 10 yards or less.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Or if your QB plays an easy schedule and has some top WRs in college…his accuracy may be amazing in the easy games, terrible in the hard ones, and still equal out to over 60%. You’d have to be terrible to have under 60% in a big program. Look at this list, https://www.reddit.com/r/NFL_Draft/comments/4b5asq/college_accuracy_of_1st_round_qbs_over_the_past/

Brandon Weeden is obviously the best QB of all time!!

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

The draft is a crap shoot, so is drafting a QB, I’m sure you can go back over the thousands of QB’s taken to make your point.

you have to have some sort of logic/metrics behind choosing a QB, do you draft the least inaccurate QB? do you draft the fastest QB? do you draft the biggest arm QB? do you draft Jamrcus Russel…Ryan Leaf…Jeff George…they all had big arms.

If i were picking a QB my main concern would be his accuracy, his mindset and will to win would be up there as well. the rest is easy.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Mike i’m not talking about Miami, i’m talking about drafting a college QB, i would assume there’s more to accuracy than just numbers, you would have to evaluate the difficulty of the passes but having a high completion % is a good place to start.

If i’m drafting a QB that’s my number 1 criteria, how accurate is this QB.

Throwing a football and leading a wr correctly is the most difficult thing to do as a QB, so it should be the number one objective when considering drafting a QB.

    ____
I wasn’t presenting a position. I was presenting facts. You wouldn’t use yards per carry to measure a running back’s vision. They are two separate things so they should be discussed separately. I was trying to help you out, but if you want to continue to misuse stats and definitions then don’t be mad when people give you pushback.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I agree with you mostly. Completion percentage depends so much on scheme. Yeah the get out quick guys will have higher ones than the guys busting it down field and have higher yards per catch. Reason why some dude at some point came up with that QB rating formula.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I disagree, you have to have some sort of measuring stick to evaluate the talent you are going to invest in, i agree that if all the QB is doing is throwing 5 yard passes then yes the numbers are skewed but i highly doubt that is the case over a 4 year college career. and if that is the case the film study will show that.

I wanted us to draft Andy Dalton due to being the highest compl% QB, he was taken in the 2nd round. that would have been a bargain instead of taking Tannehill at #8

    Ocala,

Good post above. I agree, accuracy is one of my main foci as well and so are the other ones you mention. Haskins just doesn’t have enough experience for me. He’s also looked rough in the Perdue and Nebraska games. Those two teams aren’t very good either. I’d love for him to give it another year at OSU like Tu’a at Bama. He needs seasoning.

  77. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We’ll see — but according to Schefter ” Le’Veon Bell is unlikely to report to the team by Tuesday’s deadline, which would make him ineligible to play the rest of this season.”

Makes no sense why he wouldn’t just sign and get that extra year qualified. But maybe that was the plan all along and he is way out of football shape. Or maybe just ended up that way as he had a good time in Miami. Still a 26-year-old kid with millions.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Pittsburgh would be crazy to sign him at this point. They have his replacement, don’t need him. Only downside to them letting him walk is him maybe signing with the Ravens or Bengals. And I don’t know if either of them have the cap to sign him for what he wants.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Don’t think the Steelers have any real choice as to whether to let him sign the tender or not…. but maybe they can pull it still (not sure). Key factor is if he is worth all he thinks he is then the smart move would be let him do so, franchise and trade. But maybe his worth is below that now with the major headache diva tag. He let his teammates down. So much that they actually say how pissed they are at him to reporters…. imagine what they say over drinks.

  78. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I’ve gotta side with ORob here. Completion percentage is the base measure of accuracy. Now you can dig further into the stat and weight it according to scheme, distances thrown, WR drops, etc., but generally speaking a high completion percentage is going to equate to good accuracy. If I’m looking to draft a QB, accuracy would be my first criteria, followed by arm strength (doesn’t have to be extraordinary, just able to make all the throws), pocket awareness, ability to read defenses, and anticipation.

  79. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – I think completion percentage is definitely one tool to measure accuracy, but you have to match it up with the film, and see what type of passes were thrown, and how that QB throws intermediate and deep passes, and how much the accuracy falls off. I wanted Mayfield because he’s accurate, and also because he’s a leader of men. I would like our next QB to be that, a guy that inspires his players, but also has the skills to back it up.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I only used Miami as an example of how just taking the 2 QB’s completion percentage wasn’t a good example, because we know the type of passes they throw here, how infrequently they throw intermediate and deep passes. When you throw predominately short passes, you should have a high completion percentage

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Plus, I didn’t want to draft Josh Allen because he had a horrible completion percentage, and I didn’t think it would get any better in the pros

First thing I looked for in a QB is the ability to process information quickly. That, to me, is vital. Plenty of guys are accurate enough, but can they pick the right play or the right place to go with the ball most of the time….and do it in 2-3 seconds. You don’t need to be super accurate to be good.

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Completion percentage shows efficiency. Accuracy has a lot of variables. For instance Dan Marino didn’t have the highest comp. pct all the time, but he also didn’t throw bubble screens and dump offs all day. Most of his passes were 10, 20 and 30+ yards with pinpoint accuracy. I’d like to see what the comp. pct. would be for some of the QBs today throwing the way Dan did.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Exactly why you can’t trust completion percentage in our offense. To me, that’s like keeping completion percentage on hand offs. lol

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I do think you’re over exaggerating the passes we throw though. We do throw a lot of short screens and stuff like that, but we also throw a decent amount over 5 and even 10+ yards too. We’re just not hitting on most of the long attempts. We also have an issue blocking the deeper drops. Those are the plays we’ve seen Osweiler get sacked on.

Lots of teams throw that short stuff. You see it in every game. I’m not a fan of it either, but that’s the way the game is played today. It’s not just us. The Pats have lived on it for 15 years. They started it.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We have an issue in our league where the guy who has Bell picked up Conner and put Bell on I/R but he is not injured. So when Bell signs with another team next year, he has both of them. We had an issue a few years ago when Jordy Nelson went down for the year, he might not have been ready to play early on the next season. Our league told the guy who owned him you can protect him but you can’t I/R him until he plays a game and goes down again. So he would have only 5 WRs at his disposal and with byes and injuries, he’d be forced to make additional moves. So he didn’t protect him and Nelson ended up having a good season for someone else once he was good to go.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So seems you do care about what Bell does before Tuesday. 🙂
All depends on the rules of your league. Never played legacy, but would check what the rules are on placing on IR versus feel like saving cause think the guy won’t come back. Bell could be on the team tmrw.

Are you watching the Chiefs game? 3rd and 10, does Mahomes throw a freaking 3 yard pass and hope they get a first? No fucking way! He threw a 15 yard pass, and a strike too. I just can’t stomach watching our team NOT do this time after time. We’re supposed to be like KC lite. We’re not KC anything

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I kid you not, I’d rather us throw a ball past the sticks and get an INT than watch us throw a 5 yard pass on 3rd and 10.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL… we’re not the Chiefs and we don’t have a QB like Mahomes. He’s Dan Marino circa 2018.

So what you’re saying is you’d rather take a sack and a 5-10 yard loss over a 2-5 yard gain? Because that’s what happens when Osweiler has dropped deep. Today could be ugly. Tunsil and James could be out. Davis might be the only starter on the OL today. Yikes!

I’m pretty sure Gase would love to be explosive and throw down the field. But if those plays can’t be executed, you do what you can to try and stay competitive. We’re not good on offense for a few different reasons. We are what we are. I think we need the defense to play a big game today to have any chance to win.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think you have to have the mentality of taking shots, and I don’t think we have that. I think we’re very calculated, and play everything very safe. I thought we played like that before the O-line injuries, but Wilson and Grant made some huge plays that covered for it. You saw that link I put up to that Denver vs Indy game of Osweiler. He threw the ball all over the field, and if you watch it again, that kid has a legit NFL arm. He threw one pass that I think was about a 15-20 yard out pattern to the opposite side of the hashes that he was throwing from, and he had a very tight window to throw to, and he put that throw on a rope to his receiver. He can make the throws. Throw guys open. We have Stills, lead them downfield a few times to loosen up the defense. If I were an opposing team, I’d load up the defense all with 10 yards, and dare us to throw past that.

  91. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:
