2018 Season – Game 11 – Dolphins @ Colts

The author has decided to take a different approach this week.  It is, after all, Thanksgiving Week, and I’ve decided to look for things to be thankful for.  First off, our record is actually 5-5, and that’s not a bad place to be. It’s been an odd year in the NFL, with a handful of good to elite teams in each conference, followed by a lot of average to poor teams.  The Chiefs (9-2),  Steelers (7-2-1) and Texans (7-3) lead their divisions, but the Chiefs are the only team that is being challenged within their division, as the LA Chargers are in 2nd at (7-3).  Every other division leader is followed by a .500 team.  We’re one of em, as we trail the Patriots (7-3).  So there’s hope, right?

On paper this could be a tough matchup for us.  The Colts are flying high, and Andrew Luck is looking more like the Andrew Luck of old.  The Colts are putting up points, lots of them, scoring 29.8PPG.  That’s good for 5th in the NFL.   After 10 games, Luck already has 29 TD’s, and even more impressive, only 9 INT’s.  Impressive, considering he’s thrown the ball 400 times already.  The good news is, if there’s one thing we do well, it’s take the ball away on defense, especially in the passing game. In fact, which team is #1 in INT’s in the NFL?  Your very own Miami Dolphins!

The Colts have a running game, but their offense is all about Andrew Luck and the passing game.  I hope Frank Reich and OC Nick Sirianni decide to throw all day, I think we can make things difficult for them.  The Colts leading receiver is the super fast and diminutive T.Y. Hilton, with 585 yards and 6 TD’s on 38 receptions.  Right behind him has been TE Eric Ebron who came over from the Lions has really flourished in Indy.  Ebron is having a career year with Luck, 39 receptions for 463 yards and 9 TD’s.  Ebron had just 11 TD’s in his first 4 seasons with Detroit.

The Colts running game, like most NFL teams these days, is a 3 headed attack.  Marlon Mack, who is finally healthy is the lead back, and he’s spelled by Jordan Wilkins.  Nyheim Hines is Luck’s receiving back.  While Mack has 471 yards rushing, Hines has 226 yards receiving.  Hopefully, we’re able to contain the backs, and although the passing game is where the Colts live and breathe, it’s where I think we can make things tough on them.

The biggest hole in my strategy is our lack of pass rush.  That, and the fact that Bobby McCain is questionable.  We will once again be forced to employ many different combinations of CB’s and safeties, and Minkah will likely reach a new high in snaps this week.  He’s got to be on the field, he’s bar none our best cover guy out there next to Xavien Howard.  Minkah has been better than Howard, but I give Howard his due, he’s been very good himself.  So Minkah will play LCB, SCB, FS, SS, LB, he probably shouldn’t come off the field unless he’s spent.

So where do we generate a pass rush?  Charles Harris is quite questionable, which means that Cam Wake and Robert Quinn are going to get a lot of snaps.  Cameron Malveaux is no longer a Dolphin, so depth wise it’s Andre Branch and Jonathan Woodard, unless Harris suits up.  Quinn and Wake need to have big days.  That’s it folks, if these guys can step it up, and hit Luck early and often, it could lead us to something special, a huge upset of the Colts.

Ryan Tannehill returns this week, and no, he’s not at 100%.  He needs to hunger for this.  He’s seen the team slip in his absence, he has to want to get in there and right the ship.  The good news is that Tunsil and James look to be good to go despite both of them nursing injuries.  Larsen is questionable, but Jake Brendel may not be such a bad consolation.  It seems like our whole team is questionable for this game, but I think they’ll all play, including Kenyan Drake, and possibly even Devante Parker.  I hope Tannehill seizes this day, and makes us a winner.  It would be a great story.  Maybe after this victory, it leads to more victories, and we have an improbably playoff run.  It has to start somewhere, and this is as good a place as any.

So back to Thanksgiving.  I’m thankful for the community we have here.  I haven’t met all of you here, still working on that, but I have met quite a few.  You’re a wonderful bunch, it’s been a pleasure to get know all of you, even the ones I haven’t yet met.  I hope you all enjoy this week with family, friends, whoever you spend it with.  It’s always been a holiday where I learn to appreciate my family, which keeps on growing.  A Dolphins upset win over the Colts would be a great dessert, wouldn’t it?

Happy Thanksgiving from Finsmobunleashed!!

    DAMN RIGHT IT IS!

They haven’t burnt the damn place down yet so they can still suck me back in by going on a good run. Here’s to Masochism and getting fooled again! \_/ \_/

Nice Kool-aid read by Andy Cohen, but this is a bit much.

“Standing by his locker recently, his chiseled body glistening with sweat from after a 90-minute practice, Tunsil thought hard about that question.”

    That’s a little ghey Andy.

The rules are way out of whack. I saw a replay of a play last night where the defensive player was called for a personal foul because of head to head contact, and it was completely the offensive player’s fault. You see that all the time. Why do people feel it’s okay to legislate hitting out of the game? If I am a hard hitter, and I can jar a player loose from a ball or intimidate them with a hard hit or knock them back from gaining extra yardage that isn’t intended to injury somebody, why can’t I? Do we ask guys who are really fast to run slower? Hits that are meant to hurt someone have been illegal forever. The refs have always had that power. They’ve gone too far. Physical imtimidation….not intent to injure….is part of the sport.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

      Wow i screwed that up???

, the hit to the head should have been called on the offensive player.

      anyway I totally disagree

not sure how you can hit someone in an intimidating way and not have intent on injuring that player, it would seem to me they both go hand in hand.

what happened to tackling, that’s the problem with some of these guys, they don’t know how to tackle, there’s an art to it. good teams tackle well.

get the man to the ground, that’s the point.

these guys are dying and having brain issues for the rest of their life, look at Earl Campbell! countless players have suffered from head trauma.

      it’s just not worth it

  6. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    “Chiseled”

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – I agree with you. They’re trying their best to eliminate the dangerous collisions in the sport. No reason for head to head contact, although I agree with Randy that a lot of offensive players initiate that in their own right. What I also don’t understand is why is a ball carrier, either a RB, WR, TE or even a QB allowed to stiff arm an opponent, many times in their facemask? Don’t you think that should be a penalty too? There used to be hits in the middle of the field, a guy went up to make a catch, completely defenseless, and he used to get mauled. They don’t need that. They also don’t want 300 lb defensive players knocking their star QB’s out for the season either.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I get the stiff arm, someone is reaching out to grab you, you should have the right to fend them off but it can go a little too far, i would guess that should be a judgement call, if the guy is slamming the facemask; sure he should get penalized.

  8. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Dwight Clark died of ALS, guess what they found post-mortem?

    that’s right CTE.

  9. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i’d bet you could take the worst team in the NFL right now, put them in a time machine and send them back to the 70s and they would destroy the SB champs such as the Pittsburgh teams..

Man is evolving; we are getting ….stronger…bigger…faster….

and that’s probably one of the reason these guys are suffering from CTE

Duerson was part of that 85 Bears defense, right?

  12. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Offensive players are taught to put their hand in the defender’s facemask. In part because they know they won’t get flagged for it. Wes push off constantly and are almost never called for it. Holding on the OL is allowed a lot more than it ever was. QBs are allowed to bob their heads more now. The pick play is just part of football now. The rules weren’t changed to prevent injury. They were changed….it how they are called has changed…to increase scoring.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

they call the pick play and rubs all the time on the offense

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

On OUR offense. The pats run pics on every route and get called .00000000001% of the time. Kind of like their Tackles can, you know, actually tackle a defensive player without getting called for holding.

  13. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Amendola got called for offensive pass interference on a play a few weeks back where the MLB stepped up into his path and shoved him off his route. I was like “THANK YOU! Damn that was egregious defensive pass interference, wait, what!!?? “

  14. Randy's avatar Randy says:

They call it only a small percentage of the time it happens.

  15. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I don’t think a wr can block if he crosses the LOS and the qb still has the ball but he can block behind the LOS, and sometimes they run a tree route where the outside guy slants inside and the inside guys go up field, as long as they stay in a pattern and don’t intentionally get in the way of a defender that’s good, we both play by the same rules if NE can do it why can’t we?

  16. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

NE runs rub routes but they mostly do short passing plays and screens, it’s their small elusive recs that kill us, Edelman is a tough cover

  19. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’ve never understood the legality of a stiff arm to the facemask, and frankly I am ok with the league trying to eliminate as many hits to the head as possible. I don’t think stiff arms are causing CTE, but protecting the head should be paramount.

As for what the league is ‘attempting’ to do, the league has clearly wanted more scoring for a long time. A higher percentage of people find it more exciting. Not a lot of people appreciate a 6-3 game with amazing defense. Some of these changes to increase scoring started back in the mid to late 90s, where as the head trauma thing is far more recent.

The changes the league has made in the last 6 years or so are clearly about protecting players (thereby protecting the league), and an increase to scoring as a side effect is probably welcome by league.

I have no idea which team shows up this Sunday. Will it be the offense that can at least score a couple of TDs or the one that just kicks FGs? Will it be the defense that competes and makes plays or the one that allows the opponent to do anything they want?

  31. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – Lots of questions, but after the BYE week, it sure would be nice for this team to come out fighting. If they’re not competitive, it will be extremely disappointing, whether it’s the offense, or defense, or both units. There’s no excuse, time to get it done.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If they want to keep this season alive and meaningful, this would be a big win against another 5-5 AFC team on the road. Right now we’re the 8th seed and the Colts the 9th seed on the outside looking in. A loss will make it very tough for either team to make the playoffs.

  32. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Really hoping Zach Thomas gets in. He was such a great player, did so many things well. Huge playmaker as well.17 INT’s (4 TD’s), 16 FF’s, 8 FR, 20.5 sacks, over 1700 tackles. He played in 184 games too, so durable in a much more violent era. He definitely deserves that honor, I hope it happens for him.

  33. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, I make very simple deviled eggs. Mayo, mustard, pepper, onion and garlic powder topped with paprika. Nice and creamy, no crunchy nonsense in them.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That’s the way I like them too but no garlic powder and very little mustard

      my sister uses relish

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t use a lot of mustard, just enough to add a little tangy to them. Not a lot of garlic powder either. I don’t over spice anything. Just a bit of this and that. The egg yolks and the mayo are the key.

  34. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Brian Urlacher is in the HOF, I think Zach Thomas stacks up pretty well with Urlacher.

  35. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The big edge that Urlacher has over Zach is sacks and QB hits and TFL. Urlacher was just so much bigger, I saw Zach getting stood up a lot on blitzes, Urlacher was just too big for RB’s to block

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Zach blitzed occasionally but we used a 4 man rush mostly during his prime under Johnson and Wannstedt which was 9 years.

  36. Randy's avatar Randy says:

To me, Zach exemplifies what the HOF should be about. He was a guy who truly made himself into a great player. He wasn’t gifted with amazing physical talent, so he worked his ass off and earned everything he got. I find that much more praiseworthy than a guy for whom everything just comes easy and never has to work for it or overcome those sorts of challenges. Not trying to belittle those guys. I just always root for the guy who has to earn it the hard way. The Rudy-thing, I guess. Lol

I hope he gets in, but I don’t think I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t.

Yeah man, everything sounds good. It’s food, spirits, family and friends, and football. 🙂

Not sure what the temps will be by you, but we’re suppose to have the coldest Thanksgiving in over 100 years. I don’t know about you, but getting tired of all the record setting weather and mother nature stuff. Sandy wrecked everyone in her path… 100 year storm. The shit show we had earlier in the week with a forecast of 1-3 inches of snow and turns into 6-12 of slippery shit all over the northeast and the biggest shit show on roads, bridges and with mass transit. Problem was also leaves were still on the trees. Too early for that kind for snow. People had 5-12 hour commutes that day that should have been 30 minutes to 2 hours.

The fires in Cali. The hurricanes. There’s been earthquakes too. Everything seems extreme these days. If there is a God, he’s a bit pissed off. LOL

Anyway, enjoy the best you can. We made apple/sausage/cornbread stuffing as we have for over 10 years. I made the deviled eggs. We bring that to the family destination. Good times!

Winding down now, have plenty of time before we head out tomorrow afternoon. Love this time of year and Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. To me it brings family and friends together in the best way compared to other holidays.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone… be safe, be happy and enjoy!

The week after that (home game against the Pats), the Colts are at Texans, Ravens at the Chiefs and Bengals at the Chargers. Titans are at Texans Monday night but have a very easy schedule to close out the season. This game is so huge. A loss and the season is over.

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Need Colts, Bengals, Titans, Bronco’s to lose this week for sure.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

All those teams need the same type of stuff as we do. This week won’t define anything because it can change the following week. But I do agree a win against the Colts makes our chances much better and a loss much tougher. We’re one of five 5-5 teams in the AFC and the Broncos are 4-6. Not sure I see any of these teams going on a major run. The Colts have won 4 in a row so maybe them.

But if you want to be a playoff team you need to earn it and that means winning games. We’re probably as healthy as we’re going to be this season so now is the time to do something if this team believes they can be a playoff team.

I know we drafted Balledge but there is one big back I like who, if he enters the draft, could be a late round steal. Memphis RB Patrick Taylor. Darrell Henderson gets all the attention but Taylor is a powerful back with good speed and a good receiver. 6’3″ 225 lbs.

  75. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Tim, I know what you are saying but I was looking at schedules down the road. If we don’t win this game, I think all of the 5-5 teams are going to have a very hard time keeping up with the Titans. After their Monday night game at the Texas, 4 of their last 5 games are at home against the Jets, Jags, Redskins and Colts. Their only road game in the last 5 stretch is at the Giants. Their record at home is 3-1 so far this season. That is why this game is such a must win for me.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh I agree if we lose Sunday we’re likely not making the playoffs. I just don’t see any of those other teams being consistent enough to give any of them wins based on schedules. As we’ve seen all season teams lose games you think they should win. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s still muddled in 3 weeks. However I would like to see the Phins earn their way by winning games and not just sputtering about but somehow still in the hunt.

I think it was Tim who stated that he’s not interested in Carr (financials/lack of upside)… I agree.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t view Carr as better than Tannehill. It’s debatable but that’s just it, debatable. So why make that switch when Ryan is already on the team, knows the offense and has a relationship with Gase. Also cap numbers are similar.

I do think Carr would be a good fit for the Giants though. Move on from the older Eli with a younger QB with experience and similar cap numbers. That likely depends on the compensation OAK is looking for if they’re willing to deal Carr.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yup, I agree with ya, Tim.

And with that stated, I think it’s a year past to draft a QB.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Thing is, the ’19 QB crops isn’t very stellar.

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, there are always some solid QBs in every draft if not can’t miss blue chippers. Carr was a 2nd rd pick, the same with Garoppolo, then there are the Watson, Mahomes and Trubisky’s of the world. Not sure anyone saw what Mahomes is doing this year coming. Watson has been very impressive and inconsistent, and Trubisky seems to be trending upwards.

Not sure where we draft a QB in 2019 but we should draft one.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Indeed! Again, we agree. I just wish the crop was larger, so as not to miss. But being this crop of ’19 QBs is thin, it’s going to take a premium to trade up for “the one”. In other words, what would have been considered a 4th rounder in last year’s (or, let’s say, the ’83 or ’04 Draft), will get pushed up, out of necessity for the most important position in the NFL.

I’d rather not trade up via a king’s ransom out of desperation.

In other words, the Watson’s, Mahomes’, and Trubisky’s of this crop are most likely going to go EARLIER than anticipated. The second tier of QBs this year are very less than most other years.

      We’ll see…

  79. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ve gotta problem… our team — on paper — should be better than 5-5 at the moment. Couple that with our myriad of injuries, and it makes it extremely difficult to target certain positions/players in the ’19 Draft.

    Translation: ??? and WTF?

I’m going to try to find us some guys over this holiday weekend.

KC has more talent, but I don’t know that KC beating Belichek is a given.
    ________________________________________________________
I think the team that wins that game will be the #1 seed and have the homefield advantage, and right now that’s KC, same with the NFC

I don’t view Carr as better than Tannehill. It’s debatable but that’s just it, debatable.
    ________________________________________

Not so sure about that, I think Carr has better pocket presence, has a quicker release and is more decisive.

But i doubt we even look at Carr, I think this team is ridding themselves of the high priced long term FA’s and is looking to the future to have a low cap# and draft pics so giving up a #1 to get Carr seems unlikely.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Hes making a ton of terrible decisions this year for some reason. He really hasn’t been the same since those injuries.
But Big Joe wanted him so I’ll let that override my opinion. LOL

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I guess you see a different player than me. Like I said it’s debatable. But my main point was he’s not clearly better than Tannehill to make that switch.

  83. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Carr meh. He is not the same player he was a couple of years ago

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s how I feel. We even saw him head to head this year and I didn’t see we need to get that guy. Other then Jordy Nelson getting wide open three times early in the game with nobody covering him Carr didn’t do much the rest of the game. Tannehill actually outplayed him.

  84. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Damn, Feel real bad for UCF QB McKenzie Milton. They’re calling it a horrific leg injury. Just turned it to that game but didn’t see it.

  85. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I really hope we don’t go chasing Carr. Just draft a QB, and try again. Trying to do the quick fix with Carr won’t help us, he’s barely an upgrade over Tannehill, if at all.

Wyoming, Minchew is a decent QB but not very good in the snow. lol To bad their offense is not more balanced instead of a mostly passing offense. I was hoping to get a good look at him last night. Them having to rely on their passing game was their downfall last night in that weather. Love watching football in a snow storm though.

Grier, looked good last night for WV. Probably why T-baum was there.

It’s a positive step that we’re actively looking at QB’s. At least they’re not in complete denial

  92. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

I’m usually against any WVU players and I admit part of that is a natural bias. The other part of it is historically more often than not they aren’t very good as professionals. Grier might be the exception to that. He has looked pretty good in the games I’ve watched.

Minchew and WSU run nearly the same offense we do.
Most of his passes are at the line of scrimmage. 37%
