2018 Season – Game 11 – Dolphins @ Colts

The author has decided to take a different approach this week.  It is, after all, Thanksgiving Week, and I’ve decided to look for things to be thankful for.  First off, our record is actually 5-5, and that’s not a bad place to be. It’s been an odd year in the NFL, with a handful of good to elite teams in each conference, followed by a lot of average to poor teams.  The Chiefs (9-2),  Steelers (7-2-1) and Texans (7-3) lead their divisions, but the Chiefs are the only team that is being challenged within their division, as the LA Chargers are in 2nd at (7-3).  Every other division leader is followed by a .500 team.  We’re one of em, as we trail the Patriots (7-3).  So there’s hope, right?

On paper this could be a tough matchup for us.  The Colts are flying high, and Andrew Luck is looking more like the Andrew Luck of old.  The Colts are putting up points, lots of them, scoring 29.8PPG.  That’s good for 5th in the NFL.   After 10 games, Luck already has 29 TD’s, and even more impressive, only 9 INT’s.  Impressive, considering he’s thrown the ball 400 times already.  The good news is, if there’s one thing we do well, it’s take the ball away on defense, especially in the passing game. In fact, which team is #1 in INT’s in the NFL?  Your very own Miami Dolphins!

The Colts have a running game, but their offense is all about Andrew Luck and the passing game.  I hope Frank Reich and OC Nick Sirianni decide to throw all day, I think we can make things difficult for them.  The Colts leading receiver is the super fast and diminutive T.Y. Hilton, with 585 yards and 6 TD’s on 38 receptions.  Right behind him has been TE Eric Ebron who came over from the Lions has really flourished in Indy.  Ebron is having a career year with Luck, 39 receptions for 463 yards and 9 TD’s.  Ebron had just 11 TD’s in his first 4 seasons with Detroit.

The Colts running game, like most NFL teams these days, is a 3 headed attack.  Marlon Mack, who is finally healthy is the lead back, and he’s spelled by Jordan Wilkins.  Nyheim Hines is Luck’s receiving back.  While Mack has 471 yards rushing, Hines has 226 yards receiving.  Hopefully, we’re able to contain the backs, and although the passing game is where the Colts live and breathe, it’s where I think we can make things tough on them.

The biggest hole in my strategy is our lack of pass rush.  That, and the fact that Bobby McCain is questionable.  We will once again be forced to employ many different combinations of CB’s and safeties, and Minkah will likely reach a new high in snaps this week.  He’s got to be on the field, he’s bar none our best cover guy out there next to Xavien Howard.  Minkah has been better than Howard, but I give Howard his due, he’s been very good himself.  So Minkah will play LCB, SCB, FS, SS, LB, he probably shouldn’t come off the field unless he’s spent.

So where do we generate a pass rush?  Charles Harris is quite questionable, which means that Cam Wake and Robert Quinn are going to get a lot of snaps.  Cameron Malveaux is no longer a Dolphin, so depth wise it’s Andre Branch and Jonathan Woodard, unless Harris suits up.  Quinn and Wake need to have big days.  That’s it folks, if these guys can step it up, and hit Luck early and often, it could lead us to something special, a huge upset of the Colts.

Ryan Tannehill returns this week, and no, he’s not at 100%.  He needs to hunger for this.  He’s seen the team slip in his absence, he has to want to get in there and right the ship.  The good news is that Tunsil and James look to be good to go despite both of them nursing injuries.  Larsen is questionable, but Jake Brendel may not be such a bad consolation.  It seems like our whole team is questionable for this game, but I think they’ll all play, including Kenyan Drake, and possibly even Devante Parker.  I hope Tannehill seizes this day, and makes us a winner.  It would be a great story.  Maybe after this victory, it leads to more victories, and we have an improbably playoff run.  It has to start somewhere, and this is as good a place as any.

So back to Thanksgiving.  I’m thankful for the community we have here.  I haven’t met all of you here, still working on that, but I have met quite a few.  You’re a wonderful bunch, it’s been a pleasure to get know all of you, even the ones I haven’t yet met.  I hope you all enjoy this week with family, friends, whoever you spend it with.  It’s always been a holiday where I learn to appreciate my family, which keeps on growing.  A Dolphins upset win over the Colts would be a great dessert, wouldn’t it?

Happy Thanksgiving from Finsmobunleashed!!

Stanger, sorry to see you say you and your wife don’t have a family Thanksgiving to go to anymore.

Don’t feel sorry for us so much Tim. Life throws at you what is does and you go on from there. We had a good time. We were invited to other Thanksgivings, but not the same. So made our own.

Oh okay. Do you or your wife have siblings?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

3 of them btwn the two of us. All ones who you were hoping would not show up when there was a Thanksgiving. I at least would have been the black sheep in any other fam, but the bar in mine was set in a different way. 🙂

Holy $#!t. I saw the gruesome injury yesterday and knew it was bad, but didn’t think it was THIS bad. Prayers up to McKenzie Milton.

Alright, I’m going to dig into our roster, salaries, FAs (our guys not signed through ’18), holes, etc, in order to get a complete feel for our ’19 roster. This should serve as my baseline of sorts for our needs (in whatever round) for the ’19 Draft.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Off the top of my head with a healthy roster I’d say a stud DT, stud interior OL, QB to groom, a playmaking WR with size and better CB depth. I think that would make us a much better team. DE could be a position we’ll need to address if we retool the group and go younger and cheaper. A lot of that will depend on Harris’ development. He’s healthy now and is playing Sunday so it would be nice to see him ball out the rest of the reason. He’s trending towards disappointment so far.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Thanks, Tim. I’m happy for the input being this year has been so very strange in a great many ways when looking to the next Draft.

Michigan LB Devon Bush with a serious leg injury. Didn’t see what it was. He was possibly a top 15 pick.

  9. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Mini-scouting report: Jaylon Ferguson, DE, Louisiana Tech, Senior (6’4″, 262, 4.84)

Stiff in the hips, doesn’t bend exceptionally well, fair closing speed, slow in diagnostics, not enough pass-rushing moves (yet) for the next level, decent hands at the point of attack, and often washed out of plays.

Poor level of competition in the CUSA, contributing to his NCAA-leading 15 sacks and #2 in tackles for loss.

I went in thinking he could be a potential stud, but I’m not seeing it after watching his tape (not highlights). Round? 3rd-4th, potential starter with a lot of work.

Was a real good night….. but that was my point to start. You haven’t met my wife. She’s pretty cool to hang with. One of the folks you can meet at the Fest…..and yeah that should come with a “sponsored” tag. 🙂

  11. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Mini-scouting report: Josh Allen, DE/LB, Kentucky, Senior (6’4″, 258, 4.59)

This guy is NO secret to anybody! Great hips, great wingspan, incredible speed (short and long), quick to read the play, and he’s somebody who makes the players around him better. Demonstrates a great turn-on-a-dime ability, can get low to bend the corner, extremely athletic, and displays very decent coverage ability.

The biggest question would become: do you play him at DE or LB? Can’t go wrong, regardless. Josh Allen is going to be a top-10 pick, if not a top-5 pick next year. And to think… if he puts on a mere 5-10 pounds of muscle (if he can, he’s got the frame), he could become a premier pass-rushing DE without losing much of that speed.

And in a few years, we may be talking about Josh Allen the Defensive player, not Josh Allen the QB (no offense to my dude Wyoming!).

  14. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Mental note: Charles Harris is “F”ailing us, we may not re-sign William Hayes, we may not re-sign MR. Wake, and Robert Quinn has been a failed event thus far.

We’ve gotta be drafting a pass-rushing DE this coming Draft.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I think he’s played better than his numbers show!

I remember at least 2 sacks taken away by Penalties!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think Quinn has been getting off the edge real well but we’re allowing QBs to step up in the pocket. If our DTs did a better job getting pressure I think he’d have more sacks and strip fumbles.

  15. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I’m pretty down on Andre “15 yards” Branch

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I don’t like his contract… nor his penalties. But we could do a WHOLE lot worse than Branch. I’m actually pretty UP on Andre! He just needs more discipline, and he’ll be fine.

I’d like to renegotiate his contract if he wants to stay in Miami.

    —————
Agreed, bud. That’s what “D” and I were talking about a few weeks ago regarding our “Wide-9” D and the need for 1-tech NG, after we released Jordan Phillips. Hopefully, Sylvester Williams can fill that void.

That would certainly help MR. Wake and Quinn to get to the QB as they bend the edges.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well the same issue was happening with Phillips. Taylor was the guy starting to make an impact as a pass rusher but of course he went down. 😦

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I hope you remember me all but pounding the table for a spell/replacement to Jordan Phillips, in the event he regressed, got fatigued, or got cut. And THAT is why I was all over Jonathan Hankins… Hankins could have played the 1-tech for a song, as it turned out.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Now it’s time to turn to the ’19 Draft to find ‘that guy” for us.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Tim, I’d like you to help me identify ‘that guy’ for us in the ’19 Draft. I’m talking about a really steady 1-tech NG.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Taylor was sniffing out screens and chasing QBs to the sidelines preventing them from getting the 1st down as well as getting pressure inside and a couple of sacks. I think he was becoming our best DT.

  17. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I want a DT who can rush the passer and play the run. Our philosophy is to rotate the DL so I want all of them to be able to do both.

    ——————–
I’m thinking more of a Timbo or Keith Traylor… natty NGs.

  19. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ll continue to do some mini-scouting reports over the days and weeks, but my primary focus at the moment (in no particular order) is EDGE, QB (always tricky!), and O-Line. And yes… I think we need to find a NG in this upcoming Draft.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’d like to find that big, strong athletic guard who even if not ready to start right away as we know many young OL struggle early on, but a young guy to have waiting in the wings when a vet like Sitton hangs it up.

  20. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    I’ll just leave this here!

  21. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Tim, just for you. These were my quick-hit observations…

    OFFENSE

QB: need a starter/backup, via the Draft or FA, to vie with Tannehill
RB: Re-sign Frank Gore, maybe draft a RB to replace Senorise Perry
TE: Re-sign Nick O’Leary and MarQueis Gray
    WR: DeVante???
    C: maybe draft a C
    G: Draft a G!
    T: either re-sign Ja’Wuan James, or draft a T

    DEFENSE

DE: MUST draft a DE, whether or not we re-sign MR. Wake
DT: Need to draft a NG
    LB: maybe draft a LB
    CB: draft a CB
    S: backup only

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Perry just like Bolden are good to have as backup RBs because they’re core STs guys. I do think Ballage could be a good back in time along with Drake. if re-sign Gore fine. I’m good with our RBs. We need to block it better.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yeah, man… I agree. We DO need to block it better.

But that stated, we’re not too shabby at run-blocking on our O-Line (yes, could be far better). The main problem is the pass-blocking on our O-Line, at least IMO. And that also has a direct correlation to our QB’s success.

Haskins is the most accurate QB in the draft, he tore michigan a new a-hole. he’s spot on with his delivery, that would be my #1 target if i were interested in drafting a QB.

  23. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I know most of the good ones will go early!

But on a “good” note the consensus here is we suck so we could pick early???? 😉

  24. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Here’s my thoughts on the draft.
    1. BPA – CB, DE, QB
    2. C,G
    3, G, C
The rest will depend on the first 3
    DT, OLB, WR, RB

Unless the QB everyone wants is there in the first. We should be able to pick up a good DE, or CB in the first.
Then onto OL for 2 or 3 rounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then fill in the blanks late!

  25. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

DON’T REACH/REPLACE TANNY WITH ANOTHER MIDDLING QB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it’s not a CLEAR upgrade! Just ride with Tanny!

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

You won’t know if it’s an upgrade until the replacement plays in the NFL. if you do reach there’s still no guarantee, it’s a crap shoot. if you are going to draft a qb, draft one with a high completion %

I know there is a ton of DL prospects this year

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 20 (CINN): Allen, Zach, DE, Boston College (B)
Round 2 Pick 16: Tillery, Jerry, DT, Notre Dame (A+)
Round 2 Pick 20 (CINN): Benzschawel, Beau, OG, Wisconsin (A)

  39. Gore is the oldest back in the league. even if he is still effective this season,
he might not be back next year, and at best , only next year.
Fins should draft a rb, and Benny Snell Junior from Kentucky is our kinda guy imo.tough physical runner
hes a decent size back with power and speed, also good with receptions. he reminds me of a more athletic Keith Byars
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28lHH8pCXmI

  40. raise Your hand if Your tired watching Miami struggle with backup QB’s.
every team in the NFL needs a franchise QB, including ours. Herbert from Oregon is the most NFL ready QB, and of course he isnt perfect. but hes far better than Cutler, Osweiler, etc.
RT isnt reliable, for the last 3 years, he may or may not be the answer, but we simply need to bring in a potential franchise QB candidate.
Herbert will be expensive, likely costing us 2 first round picks, and many could argue thats too expensive. but consider hes a likely franchise QB we need, and consider how many top round picks we wasted on bums. do we really need more devantes and charles harrises, or could we use a cpl picks on a franchise QB?

  41. i hope the fins beat Indy, but at this point its not realistic. the hopeful homer wants to say Miami 24 indy 20
but the realist says 35-14, mostly because we dont have a franchise QB or HC
i remember the last franchise QB Miami had, (Marino) he had us competitive every season.even with no decent running game or adequate defense

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You look at it realistically and hard to call for a win, but you never know. Why they play the games. And yeah think a lot of fans around the NFL asked Santa for someone like Marino.

  42. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Colts are favored by 8 to 9 depending where you go. Think that fair the way they have playing. Same time, Luck has been tearing it up and think our D is one that can deal with him. More worried about Marlon Mack.

  43. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Be careful what you ask for!
How many years did it take us to get a middling QB????????????????

  44. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Herbert may be the best in 2019?
But is he worth 2 first rounders???????

I don’t see him as the franchise of the future?

    • i also like Haskins, and if You have noticed lately, 2 first round picks for a franchise QB candidate, is common.
and besides, do we really need more Harrisses and Parkers? not IMO
we only bat about 500 at gettting good players with top picks, so we wouldnt lose anything substantial.
picks arent shit, its the players You acquire with them that count. we waste half our top picks all the time, why not try to use them for someone that can help?
and for the record, I like Haskins also, but its up to fins obviously, and they are scouting them all Im sure. Herbert is considered a franchise qb prospect by just about every NFL analyst out there.
they could all be wrong, but not a damn one is saying Fins have a franchise QB on the roster, We need to try for one, to actually get one/

  45. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Awesome piece. Left out is that the Colts drafted 2 or 3 RBs to take his place, but it never happened. Some of them might know how Drake feels this year. He wants to retire here…. make him the RB coach when he hangs them up.

  46. Wyoming, I feel ya brah, im tired of mediocre or middling QB also.
But calling Herbert a middling QB seems like an exaggeration, hes likely to be the first guy off the board in the entire draft. and most analysts say hes the top QB in the draft, or a few like Haskins lately.
and yes, i know sometimes players are busts, but if we dont draft a potential franchise guy, we dont get him.
we took a chance drafting Marino when 25 other teams passed on him, and we got lucky. but if we passed on Marino,,,,, dont have to finish that sentence

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

      The best QB “this” year.
Doesn’t make him a Franchise QB!

      And I didn’t say he wouldn’t be.

What I said was I don’t see it! IJMHO!

      • double check my wording my northern brother, my wording is potential franchise QB, and yes, he is a potential franchise QB

all You can expect from any draftee is talent and potential, he hasnt played in the NFL yet. so pro bowls , franchise, player of year, HOF , etc arent on their resumes.

example , when Marino was drafted, He wasnt a franchise QB, but as soon as he laced em up , HE WAS

  47. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Alright Tannehill the coach said you’re better now so let’s see it. Throw the ball down the field there’s nothing to lose. Grip it and rip it. Dink and dunk is bullshit. We need 5-6 scoring drives a game meaning Tannehill has to become something he’s never been, hope he can.

  48. earlier this season, many here were saying Patrick Mahomes wasnt all that.lol
    yea he is!
but look how smart and daring KC was. even though ALex SMith was playing very well for them,. they drafted a potential franchise QB Mahomes.
Chiefs look strong as ever IMO< and could be in the super bowl this season partially because they drafted a franchise QB

  49. some here said Lamar Jackson would be a bust too, lmao hes not, You could see his talent and i figured he would be fine at the NFL level. he could get even better if he gets to play 2 games versus 1, hes still learning on the job.
btw this room is tough on QB,s. lol they arent all Marinos nor can we expect another Marino. But a franchise QB would improve this team, more than bringing in another Harris or Parker

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      He’s got 174 yards and 2 interceptions tom1 TD

He’s hardly proven anyone wrong who capped him a bust or looks anywhere near a franchise qb

      • that isnt what they are saying in Baltimore, they are jacked at his first game record setting performance and win. dude has one game under his belt, and he got a win last week while Osweiler got a loss in Green bay.
osweiler isnt a franchise QB, we dont have one, not even a potential one unless u havent given up on part time Tanny yet

  50. when KC was shopping Alex SMith , 7 teams were interested. the chiefs looked like genuuses upgrading their QB< and getting a third round draft pick and a player for the Smith trade.

someone could want to trade for Tannehill, so the extra pick to get the franchise guy could be partially mitigated.
we sure wont get a first for RT, but a third or fourth would be nice

The season flies by except for the bye week it feels like the team has been off for a month. Beat the Colts!

  52. PS, we could also rid ourselves of the RT contract, dude is WAAYYYY overpaid !
probably one of the worst values in the league.
the team was foolish enough to give him an unearned 100 million dollar contract !
he has never proven to be a franchise QB yet.
for a part time player who will likely never be a franchise QB the ridiculous contract isnt helpful and isnt a long term answer either. its time to pick guys better, and get smarter with contracts

  58. room question, Is anyone watching the games on their ipads or smartphones?

  59. i was just curious, when im on the road or out deep sea fishing, i watch on smart phone, YoutubeTV.

im pretty sure im the only guy in the gulf stream fishing in one hand and watching football in the other, lol its pretty cool

  60. Marinos first start ever, he threw 3 interceptions and lost to the shitty ass Buffalo Bills. it doesnt appear that the first game loss prevented him from having a HOF career, and the best franchise QB Miami ever had.
you cant look TOO hard at a QB first game ever, sometimes they need a game or two to get it going, some like RT take years and cant get it going.
its not that easy to step into starting NFL QB as a rookie and light up the league, few do it.

if a rookie QB first start he shows some flashes of greatness, and if he can get a W, and toss in a franchise record or two, thats a GREAT start. and Jackson certainly accomplished that .

  73. BTW i believe Miami DID attempt to draft a POTENTIAL franchise QB when they Picked RT.

it didnt work out immediately, but we stuck with it, brought in different players, OC, coaches, and gave him a humongous contract and remodeled the stadium hoping he would be our franchise QB.
Miami DID do everything possible to try to get our guy for us, but RT hasnt earned his contract, nor the title of franchise QB.
but kudos for the team trying, and hopefully they try again soon, maybe next times the charm
