2018 Season – Game 12 – Bills @ Dolphins

From memory, this is the spot where we’re usually facing playoff elimination.  Sometimes it’s the Bills, sometimes it’s the Ravens, but either way, we come out on the wrong side.  Adam Gase made sure that wasn’t an issue, so thank you Adam for leaving your balls in Davie, and thus sparing us all the usual heartbreak of a major clunker against the Bills.  Despite the records, the Bills are the team on the rise, while we slowly decay from mediocre to possibly sub-mediocre.

There has been much debate about Adam Gase, Ryan Tannehill, and the dynamic duo together as a pair, and while there are two sides to the debate, there’s not a soul on this blog that believes Ryan Tannehill is now, or can ever be on the same level as the best QB’s in the NFL, such as Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Ben Roethlisberger, Russell Wilson, Phillip Rivers, or even newcomers to this group such as Patrick Mahomes and Jared Goff.  He’s not even close to those guys.  As far as Adam Gase is concerned, his ledger is incomplete, but he’s nearing the point of no return.  I’ll explain.

So much was made about the wonderful job Gase did in Chicago with QB Jay Cutler, and I think I’ve found something about his style.  I don’t think Gase should be known as “The QB Whisperer”.  That’s way too sexy for what Adam Gase does to his QB’s.  I’d call him “The QB  Programmer”.  The program is “BE CAREFUL!”

In 2014 w/o “The QB Programmer”, Jay Cutler threw for 3812 yards, 28 TD’s and 18 INT’s, a QBR of 88.6.  Gase became the Bears OC in 2015, and “The QB Programmer” was born!  No more pesky Peyton Manning telling him to STFU and let me do what I do, now I’m in charge here!  Let’s look at this amazing successful transformation of QB Jay Cutler in 2015.  Cutler threw for 3659 yards, 21 TD’s and 11 INT’s, a QBR of 92.3.

Seems to me that Adam Gase puts completion percentage and less turnovers as the hallmark of his programming algorithm.  Never mind scoring TD’s, in fact, safety first Mr. Quarterback, if you need to throw past 10 yards, you better damn well have a good reason for doing so!  I mean look at the stats of Jay Cutler here in Miami last year, in what looked liked a hideous, grotesque year for him.  He completed 62% of his passes, threw for 2666 yards, 19 TD’s and 14 INT’s in 14 games.  It’s all pretty similar.  Thinking of how many times Cutler threw off his back foot or just chucked it to the turf to avoid a sack, 62% isn’t all that bad.

This past week in Indy was death knell for me for Gase.  He’s more interested in the appearance of the game, “Gee fellas, that was a close game against Andrew Luck on the road, we almost pulled it out”  What really happened was “Gee fellas, I’m sorry, we had a shot to upset Andrew Luck and the high flying Colts, but I went into a shell, my QB Programmer algorithm told me not to throw the ball past the sticks because, well, it’s dangerous you know, there are men on the other team just dying to take that ball away, and so you see, I took the safe route, and left it in the capable hands of our defense instead”.

Soooooooooo, we play the Bills in what has now become basically a meaningless game.  The Bills threw up 41 points against the Jets, we just threw up against the Jets, hanging on for dear life with a 13-6 victory in a very painful game to watch.  The Bills defeated a demoralized Jaguars team, but still, a formidable defense for sure, but a team with about as much teeth in their offense as ours. It’s a damn shame, SB7 wants to get together this weekend, but dammit, I don’t have it in me to travel to NYC to watch this team play, not anymore.  I’d sooner meet up and go to McSorley’s Old Ale House, and see if we can deplete them of all of their delicious dark ale, rather than languish at Slattery’s, “The House of Horrors” for Dolphins fans hoping for a crucial win to make the playoffs.

Tis a sad state friends, and I believe as long as Adam Gase is here (The QB Programmer), and good ole #17, Ryan Tannehill is here, there will be more of the same.  Hell, if I was Ryan Tannehill, I’d welcome the opportunity to compete for a starting job elsewhere, maybe he can have that Rich Gannon type of resurrection.

Anyway, wish I had more positive things to say, but alas, this past week and and frustrating loss has once again left me angry and unsatisfied with the Miami Dolphins.  By the way, I shit you not, I was watching SNY this morning, looking for some positive sports news about the New York Mets, and on the scroll line, I saw the Mets hired Adam Guttridge as Assistant GM for analytics, I saw the Adam G, and I was like “WTF is that, Mets hired Adam Gase!!!!!!!??????”  It got me ultra-pissed for just a millisecond, but that’s how i feel about Adam Gase right now.  I want him nowhere NEAR our rookie QB that we draft next season.  NOWHERE!!!!!

For those of you who still enjoy the games, I salute you!  Bookman, I love ya man, I wish I could share what you feel, so please continue to bring it here so at least I could share a little of it still.  Even if I get a sliver of it, it will be better than not having any of it.  I admit, sports has made me bitter.  Losing, disappointing seasons are the norm across the board for me now, Dolphins, Mets and Knicks.  The hits keep coming, and I’m feeling like Glass Joe, ready to hit the canvas.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

  1. Wait until the Browns end up with a better record than Miami this year; like I said they would

There is one soul on this board who believe he CAN reach the level of those guys (well except Rodgers, he is head and shoulders above the rest) He is not there. No, not at all. But those guys were not there in the first 5 years of their careers either. Their “eliteness” developed over time. I wrote a tongue in cheek article before the ’16 season that showed statistically that these “elite” players were not elite over the first five years and statistically Tannehill was as good or better than them in each category.

His knee injury derailed it. Now I believe he will never reach that level due to the coach. Gase will be gone after next season and Tannehill will be playing for someone else. (at a high level)

I tend to think the browns are irrelevant in evaluating the Dolphins

I don’t really care how they do. I’ve made up my mind about where the Dolphins are based on what I see from the Dolphins, not the Browns

I also tend to think the probabailty of the Browns and dolphins finishing within 1 and 2 games of each other and both missing the postseason is pretty high

    So it’s kind of moot

It’s odd that I f the Browns finish 8-8 is encouraging for them
But if the dolphins finish 8-8 it’s more of the same or a failure

The only reason that is enocuraging for the browns and not the Dolphins is bc the browns have sucked so bad. It’s all relative.

Mike E — that was about your best write ever. Disagree with a whole bunch of it as you know, but that is the kind of stuff that makes people think and gets convo going. Part of me is tempted to say “Gase is a real smart guy”, but then who am I to doubt that he built his career on the coattails of the great Gumby? 🙂

  7. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I believe if you give Tannehill a decent running game, one that has a great RB carrying 20 or more times a game, Tannehill will be a very good QB. but he does need run support.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I believe if you give Tannehill a top rushing attack, 2 pro bowl WR’s, a top 5 defense, and maybe Sean McVay as HC, Tannehill can be a good QB. Call me when all those things happen, so I can see if I’m right. 🙂

That’s one way to assess the situation, but that is hindsight, what if the runs worked? what if the D held up, what if he did pass and it fell incomplete or got picked for 6, would we be having this same convo.
in the moment Gase didn’t have your hindsight advantage and we were inside our own 10 yard line.

If we won and somehow landed a WC spot would that seal out position in the SB? i doubt that, at this point we can’t contend no matter what happened in Indy and neither can 80% of the teams in the NFL.

  10. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Mike i bet you’re a great salesman when it comes to eyeglasses, what would happen if you got hit in the head by a meteor? you got injured and went on the IR in the National Glasses League (NGL) they would have to replace you with a back-up and that back-up wouldn’t be nearly as effective as you and sales would drop off, should all the shareholders who are losing money call for your head?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Eh, I’m far from a great salesperson, I’m more of a patient advocate. I prefer to work with the person and advise them what they should get, and help them get the best eyeglasses for their dollar. If someone truly just wants the best of everything we can give them, I’ll be more than happy to provide, but I don’t up-sell for the sake of doing that. Never.

Back to the meteor, how would it be that I only got hit in the head by a meteor? How small was this meteor? Do you really think I’d only be injured, and not vaporized?

  11. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

we have to endure another losing season, should heads roll over this or do we understand the main cause of why we are having a losing season?

the reason NFL coaches say injuries are no excuse and every team has them is because they don’t want players using that as an excuse to quit on them.

realistically losing you starting QB and 80% of your OL is cause for great concern! now add in your 2 fastest recs some DL.

Injuries while not an excuse is to blame for the lack of progress this year, if you keep changing coaches and QBs you set this team back.
most good teams have had HCs who have been with the team for years.

we need to get off the merry go round and stick with what we have until we are sure this is not the right direction.

        Okay fair enough. 🙂

Though I’m not a happy camper either with what has gone on with this team. I also feel bad for Gase he has not had the opportunity to roll with his full toolbox. He has also started 5 different QBs in less than 3 seasons. I think that gets overlooked a lot here.

that is what Gase put together, by acquiring some and keeping others after year 2.

we are not signing long term FA’s, getting our cap together, this plays a roll in the success of our current team, with that said the starting roster i believe was good enough to contend this year.

makes you wonder where we will be in 2 years???

“the reason NFL coaches say injuries are no excuse and every team has them is because they don’t want players using that as an excuse to quit on them.”
    ****
I would say it’s because injuries don’t matter. Why? Because you still play the game, and you are still expected to win. Nobody gives a darn if you have injured players. That’s why you have backups, and you are still expected to find a way to win with the players you have. That’s the business. Winning. Nobody gives a shit why you don’t. Do a better job of signing better backups. Adjust how you play. Focus on an area of strength and emphasize that. Figure it out.
    ***
ORob, weren’t you the guy who kept saying you can’t win without a top 10 QB a few years back? I’m asking because somebody kept harping on that, and I think it was you but can’t remember.

Yeah, once in a while a bubble screen will break loose for a TD, especially when you throw 10-15 a game. It’s kinda like Lou getting something right about a player when he makes thousands of predictions per year, so you get 1 or 2 right. Woo hoo!

    *********************
Forget how many QB’s for a second, how about what he does with the guy he’s tied his coaching career to in Miami? Focus on that for a moment, and tell me why he handcuffs that QB that he chose to be with? Please don’t tell me because the defense has to make stops too, because that’s a cop out. Game on the line, we have 2 series where he decided he can’t out the game in the hands of the QB, leaving the door open for the superior offense to beat our inferior defense, which is precisely what happened. That’s just a microcosm of Gase’s stay here. He’s not a winner, much like Joe Philbin before him. Philbin didn’t trust Tannehill either.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s not just Tannehill, it’s the entire offense, protection and the receivers. We’re rolling with a lot of backups and guys not 100%. Where has Stills been. Parker? You guys want this offense to take off and win a big race with a car with 3 wheels. You don’t see that?

Show me one HC who has won having to start 5 different QBs in less than 3 years at the start of his career as HC? We haven’t had the team that was designed the last two seasons. Call it an excuse all you want but it’s real. If talent doesn’t matter then I don’t want to see any more posts about FA and the draft because it doesn’t matter, right?

When the Mets have all their pitchers go down, Cespedes and others and we field a AAA team does it matter? Come on Mike, be honest. 😉

Why was deGrom only 10-9 with a 1.70 ERA and still won the Cy Young? Great individual performance on a shell of the designed team. Talent matters, man.

The Dolphins are a shell of the team that was designed in the offseason. Not just counting the guys on I/R, but all season we had guys on the 53 missing games. Depth is one thing, to replace a guy here and there, or in a game or for a week or two. Not to have to start backups and backups to backups, guys picked up off the street and from the PS. We’re not good enough to overcome that shit.

Can’t compete with you, ER, Bookman and Toba on cold weather stories…. but makes all the sense in the world to me. MikeE,
Hmmmm. Two coaches who don’t trust Tannehill? Veeeery interesting!

Actually, if i had to guess, I’d guess Gase doesn’t trust the OL…..even though they only gave up one sack on Sunday, I think. He constantly refers to the pressure we face.

  22. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Tannehill was never going to be an elite QB. Those guys have a feel for the game and how to play it….and, more often than not…will stick a knife in your chest when given the chance. Tannehill never has.

  23. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

PFF’s Offensive line rankings this week.
    31. Miami Dolphins
    Week 10 Rank: 31st

Before injuries struck, the Dolphins were well on their way towards being a competent offensive line. Back in a Week 6 thriller against the Bears, the line opened up holes for 158 rushing yards between Frank Gore and Kenyan Drake on 28 carries.

That’s about where I would rank our line….Maybe one lower.

  24. D's avatar D says:

Just saw the Ravens released Hroniss Grasu who was a fairly highly touted OL the year he came out int he draft. Mightnot be a bad, young semi talented player to add for depth, though ill admit part of the reason i like him is because his name is neat lol.

  25. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – I completely understand the roster, and what we’re playing with, yet there we were, with a 10 point lead, and we had a chance to put the game away, 2 chances, and despite all the trouble we’ve had with pass protection, the guys were getting it done, and he still chose to take the ball out of his QB’s hands. It’s not like I’m blind to our loss of talent, I’m just specifically talking about this game. He played it too safe, because nothing ventured, nothing gained. It’s not just execution, it’s the plays you choose to execute. Bubble screens and runs don’t usually get you big yardage, especially when you haven’t stretched the field vertically, everyone on the defense is already there. We saw what happened when Caroo got open, and of course the throw was awful, but if you throw it past the sticks, sometimes your guys catch it. They probably would have been shocked if we threw a pass more than 10 yards, they probably weren’t expecting it. I don’t like Gase’s mindset there, he’s not the type of guy that’s going to take the game, and if he doesn’t feel that way, why would the QB feel any differently? How can he have confidence that he can do it if his HC that calls the play doesn’t have it in him?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No doubt Gase played it conservatively and put it in the hands of his defense who had played well much of the game. Remember too Tannehill is coming off of a shoulder injury that forced him to miss 5 games and isn’t 100%. My guess is Gase was hoping for a player to break a short pass or a run to get a 1st down. The defense didn’t stop them either. It didn’t work out. I’m not denying that. But I do understand the thought process.

    • D's avatar D says:

Bubble screens and dink and dunk passes are what you do when you have little confidence in your passing game because you are taking advantage of the high completion percentage nature of those passes. You also are more confident in your skill players to get more yardage with their feet than you are the QB with his arm.

KC could dink and dunk all day with Tyrek Hill and Hunt, but they still air it out because they are confident in the arm talent of Mahomes. So either there is one or two issues.Either Gase doesnt think Tanny is a good enough QB to play that way, and thats true, or Gase doesnt have the nuts to play that way. It could be a bit of both too, but the way Gase acts on different issues its harder to believe its the latter.

I hadn’t realized that Phillips got picked up off waivers by Buffalo.

Watch him have a career game against us like all past Dolphins seem to do.

Two sacks and 5 tackles (2 for a loss) is what my jaded brain is telling me.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He hasn’t been all that for BUF. But I’m sure he’d love to stick it to us. We’re also likely going to be on our 3rd center with Swanson banged up. And the beat goes on… 😦

  27. D's avatar D says:

Tim, people arent just focusing on Tanny or Gase, they are just including them in things they feel need to be changed, its really not that you are extreme, is that you are extremely sensative other making comments about individuals you dont feel are the core problem. I know from my perspective i dont think Tanny is the only problem we have, not by a long shot, but im not sparing him any of the critiques just because others also deserve it.

He is though the QB and the highest paid player we have, so his position, the importance of having better production from that position, and that salary are going to draw criticisms. Same for Gase, the importance of his position and the fact that you can directly trace the the functioning of the offense to him (since he refuses to let an OC call plays) draw people to criticize them. If you think these guys dont deserve criticism then i think you should write them a letter asking them to change their positions on the team as thats the only way that criticism of them will end.

They signed up for the responsibility package, it came with the salary and the authority of the position, so im just saying, you dont need to protect them and keep reminding people fo something they already know. We know there are more problems than just them, they just are on the top of the pils so we are starting with them as we make our way to the bottom of the stack.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Actually I’m not sensitive. I will admit I get tired of my comments being ignored and portrayed inaccurately. If you don’t see that the narrative is Gase and Tannehill all the time even when Tannehill wasn’t playing I don’t know what blog you’re on. LOL

I’m not even discussing Tannehill much, I’m talking about the misfortune Gase has been dealing with. He has not had the chance to roll with a relatively full deck most of his career as a HC. It is what it is and I get why we are the team we are. I’m just pointing out other reasons for our woes other than Tannehill and play calls.

  28. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We saw what happened when Caroo got open, and of course the throw was awful, but if you throw it past the sticks, sometimes your guys catch it.

It was a great play by Carroo, but Tannehill got leveled on that play as he was releasing the ball. You could hear the hit on TV.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And was in the news that Tanny getting hit as was throwing was why the pass was off. You throw deep and it comes with risks….. but sometimes pays off even if not as intended.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Oh yeah, but nonetheless, it was TD pass. Better to take chances 30-50 yards downfield than give up and throw the damn ball behind the LOS. That kills me.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You see, people leave stuff like that out or weren’t aware of it and just call it a bad pass. Tannehill pointed to Carroo like go… and as he fired it he got blind-sided from behind while rolling out.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

yeah, after he avoided a sack, stepped up and then rolled out to his right to buy more time in a very “playmaking” fashion. NOPE it was a bad pass.

  29. D's avatar D says:

Tim that wasn’t playing conservatively, that was stupid. He passed on 1st and second down when we had a 10 point lead in the 4th and then pussies out of trying to go for the 3rd down when we needed to make up for those other two stupid calls and extend the drive to take more time off the clock. The third down call wasnt as bad as the two before it. Conservative would have been run run run punt, not pass pass run punt….thats like half in one mode and half in another.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I didn’t like it either. But it’s easy to criticize when it doesn’t work. You call it stupid, I still call it conservative. After the first two passes didn’t work the run was a conservative call.

      • D's avatar D says:

Passing on 1st and 2nd down is aggressive, not conservative. It was conservative not to tke a shot on third, but the first two said “Im being agressive with my play calling” and the third was like he said, “OK well im going to be conservative now”. It should have been the reverse, Run on first and second, pass on third if its not third and really short. Its schitzo play calling. I call it stupid because 90% of the NFL coaches do just what i was saying above, and 90% do it knowing that the rest of the league knows that 90% do it and yet they still do it because its tried and true.

  30. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Do a better job of signing better backups.
    ___________________________________________________

Easier said than done, it takes years to change over a roster and i believe that’s exactly what this FO is doing,

you can’t keep firing coaches, that’s a recipe for mediocrity.
Gase has a five year deal we have only completed year two. calling for his head now is too early, you have to play it out and i think he’s headed in the right direction due to the players he added last year.

  32. D's avatar D says:

This Tanny/Gase debate doesnt just happen in this blog, i see site after site talking about the dolphins and they all seem pretty split, Gase is the problem, no the injuries are, not Tanny is, Tanny can be good enough if we have the right team, etc etc. The reason is, is that all of those statements are correct. Could we do worse at QB if we draft somene and replace Tanny, sure, but we could do better too.

Thats the problem with a middle of the road guy, you are stuck in that quandry and it comes down to personality when having an opinion on it. Im a swing away guy, id rather hack at the ball and try to hit that home-run than i would like to keep watching the ball hoping to walk and possibly just striking out again year after year. People who want to keep status quo because at least they know what they got, i get it, you feel like taking the safer bet, im just not that guy. Same with coaching, if the coach cant get it right, im not going to sit there and go, well makybe if this goes right and that goes right we might make the playoffs.

Im patient enough to give a coach his due time to make things work but im not patient enough to keep making excuses year after year, and i dont care how bad the injury issue is with us right now, we are going to have significant injuries every year. Look across the league there are a lot of teams with key players injured, yes it makes it harder to win, but thats what ya want in a coach, a guy who takes lemons and makes lemonade. If he isnt that, then he isnt special ad if he’s not special why not gamble on getting a better one, because you are likely to wind up at least with what ya got.

I dont think any of us are going to convince the other we are right. I know the only thing i have been responding to is to point out when one side is painting the other side badly because truthfully, neither side is any more right than wrong. It turns into Tanny lover Tanny hater, but really its patience brigade vs blow it up.Probably find that back when we had patience brigade back in the day most of the people are on the same side as they were then. I think i was more patience brigade back then, but i definitely am at least one foot on the blow it up side right now.

Also, Tim to be certain, you are very insistent on your opinion and you are quick to call people haters just as much as you feel you are singled out as a Tanny lover, so man when you are throwing out those statements like you did at me yesterday, read your post from someone elses perspective. You have called me out for singling on Tanny many many times and yet i say things about Gase and i say things about different players at different times. I call out the defense when we dont seem to want to tackle, but when i dont state it the way you feel it is, you go back to the well and pull out “Oh, we know how you feel about Tanny” and i really dont think you do.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t refer to anyone as a hater other than joking around and I make that clear. I mostly say I know you’re not a big fan of Tannehill so…

Lou filled this blog up yesterday all day and everyone of them was about Tannehill. The overall narrative here from most people was mostly about Gase play calls and Tannehill. I was the only one harping on the defense not getting it done.

To me Tannehill didn’t lose the game, but he didn’t win it either. I realize we’re not a good team. But somehow that turns into me defending something. No!!! I get that we’re not a good team.

Funny thing is we’re still very much in this thing because the teams we’re chasing are 6-5 and 5-6. However, I don’t expect us to make the playoffs and if we somehow did I don’t expect us to win. I see a lot more wrong with this team than the HC and the QB. That’s my opinion. That’s all.

The other teams that have been hit with a lot of injuries are struggling or coming apart just like we are – GB, ATL, CIN, PHI choose others if you’d like. But it’s a real reason, not just excuses. Talent matters. Only 9 teams have more than one win over .500 in a 32 team league. Some of those teams are having great seasons or solid seasons. The rest of the league is meh or bad.

  33. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, again I wish it would have worked out differently. We blew the game.

    • D's avatar D says:

That one, the Cincy game, and there have been some we just started out blowing it lol. I was shocked we played well as we did,. I thought we would get run over by a pretty hot team. Like i said the other day im not upset about that game, it is just another indicator that some things need to change. We were in control of that game and we for no reason just let go of it.

    ————————————————-
Im not ignoring you and i agree with you, but then when i say Oh and BTW ……this is my opinion on things, you go nope nope nope, you are just focusing on the two things im not going to focus one.

Its hard to have a decent conversation with you because you are so adamant that no one mention Gase and Tanny that you become a broken record and i know that probably what you think about others, but im watching their comments and yours and you are reading right over things that Mike says as soon as you read the word Gase in his post.

We arent stupid, we know its a team game too, but you have to admit, if you watch 10-12-25 3rd an 1’s where they call for a pass play and fail miserably, or 3rd and 6 and he passes to a guy behind the LOS, or 3 yards past it, and you see poor game management in not beig able to run the game out with a lead, or ya see a game thats wildly out of hand and yet he is still calling the same plays that havent worked for 3 quarters in the 4th with us needing to score to get back in it, you have to go, hmmm maybe part of this and a big part might be the coach.

Same can be said of Tanny, because he is in year 7, and he is the same unreliable guy he always has been, 7 years of oh its only because he this and he that….nah, the dude just hasnt got it. It doesnt mean i hate him as a person, it doesn’t mean i wish him ill will, but i want better for my team, so yeah im going to mention him and his failings until he isnt our problem any longer, and its not singling himout, its including him in what needs to change.

You dont really discuss more than two things, you discuss two not things. You see what im saying. Your discussions are always about the two things, you THINK the rest of us are stuck on, not being the only two things. You dont ever really say in anything but generic terms what you feel is the issue. Like “oh its a bunch of injuries”, but that doesnt explain the play calls, and it doesnt explain the throwing the ball at the head of a player thats in the middle of a scrum. I have pointed out things specifically at why i think Gase is part of the problem and you see it as me putting it all on Gase or all on Tanny.

When i say you arent discussing it, im saying you arent responind to my comments, you are responding to what you think my comments are and your responses are the same every time to every person who is stating why they think Gase is part of the probem or Tanny is part of the problem.

  37. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I used to be a big believer in the three year recycle being the reason we were stuck in mediocrity. It was the main reason I always preached patience. I still believe that to a certain extent. Changing schemes every three year required different types of players so we had to get rid of not only under performing players but also “good” players who were no longer scheme fits. (mostly on defense and O-line) you only get to draft about 7 players per year and only 2-4 of those work out as starters on teams with GOOD player development so you could never restock. For a very long long long time I have wanted a young offensive minded coach that could put a successful system in place that would break the cycle of rinse repeat.

I was excited early on and thought Gase might be that guy. Now my opinion has changed. I do not like the offensive scheme he runs. (With whichever QB) and he doesn’t control the Defense and let’s he coordinators have full reign. after 2.5 years I feel like I have seen enough. I am over him and want to move on.

    Rinse Repeat. 😦

  39. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Gase mentioned why he called the plays he did at the end. Something about getting it shoved up your ass or something like that.

The offense wilted like it always does. This isnt a new thing with this HC…..the defense sucks too. Also not a new development.

If we are choosing sides… i’m in the Gase stays and better bring in 2 new QBs camp. Regardless what my opinion on RT17 is, it’s time to move on unfortunately. Like D just said, he and this franchise could benefit with fresh start.

  40. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – I don’t hate Tannehill in the least. I just hate the idea that somehow things will be different with him, that if only we stayed healthy on the O-line, if this or that happened. It seems those things are never going to happen, so we have to try again. Some QB’s can elevate their team even when there are injuries, their O-line play is shabby or whatever. I’ve seen Russell Wilson play with some hideous O-lines, and he’s running around for his life, yet he always manages to be one of the top QB’s in the NFL. His receivers are meh, same for his RB’s, and now his defense isn’t even that great, yet somehow he’s always a top 10 QB, and usually, he has a winning team. Again, I know our defense is not good, it’s a work and progress, at least we have some talent that we can work around, and improving the d-line will be a priority for sure. Get a bonafide pass rusher, and maybe all of a sudden, Harris is healthy and can be the guy opposite that other guy, and pick up a FA DT along with drafting one, and maybe we see a legitimate improvement. Regardless of all that on defense, it’s time to move on from Tannehill, and I’m pretty sure I’m ready to throw in the towel on Gase too. SUCKS!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I didn’t say you hate Tannehill. I understand your frustration. I’ve said before whatever needs to happen to get this team to be a winner I’m all for it. Dolphins first! I just think it’s more than Gase and his play calls and Tannehill. Replacing those two is not going to correct the other issues. It would just be new and different and it could be worse.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think we need a season or maybe even 2 of “worse”, maybe get a couple of top 10 picks, maybe even a top 5 pick. It could really turn things around, if of course, you make the right selections.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

All of this is getting exhausting. I was talking with my friend last night about it. He’s a Mets and Dolphins fan too. Even though the Mets made it to the WS back in 2015, we were saying how come joy doesn’t last long for us like it does for other fans? LOL

  41. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I also I understand it’s extremely difficult to find a Russell Wilson in the draft, but we have to try, and maybe taking 2 QB’s in a draft isn’t a bad idea. I know we have a lot of spots to fill, but you get the QB right, that can make up for a few other things. Certainly better than waiting for Tannehill to turn into the Great Pumpkin . . .

  43. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s unbelievable – Russell Wilson’s worst QBR is almost as good as Tannehill’s best QBR, 92.6 was Wilson’s worst, and 93.5 was his best. Wilson is really amazing.

  46. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

you will find articles by ESPN “explaining” it and how it is better but they don’t actually explain it. it is arbitrary.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m not fond of it, but the QB’s who really elevate their teams always are at the top of ESPN’s ratings. I think it’s a little hokey, but some of the parameters they use make sense to me.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  52. Randy's avatar Randy says:

All congregate stats are wonky…..even the old QB rating. You’re still placing arbitrary value on different stats and weighting them as you see fit. Who’s to say the “value” they put on a TD or an INT is accurate? I actually like ESPN’s QBR because its take more into account. Neither rating is factual though because somebody decides what value to place on each stat and that part is arbitrary.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Passer rating is mostly about comp. pct, YPA and TD passes to INTs. Those aren’t arbitrary, it’s whether it happened or not.

  53. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Oops. Aggregate not congregate.

  54. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
The individual stats themselves aren’t arbitrary. What stats they choose to use and how they weight each individual stat is arbitrary.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well they’ve been using it since 1973 and it’s pretty accurate at evaluating QB play. Pass attempts, completions, yards per attempt which determines the quality of throw and gain, scoring vs. turnover. It’s okay by me.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The passing game as a whole not quarterback play

A wide receiver can drop a perfectly thrown ball and turn a 153.8 rating into a zero rating and can make a circus catch on a poor pass and run 70 yards for a touchdown to turn a zero rating into a perfect rating

Pass efficiency. Not necessarily quarterback efficiency

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      LOL

I believe the QBR takes into account stuff like escaping pressure, difficulty of a throw, running for a 1st down etc. Passer rating is just about what happens during a pass attempt. The top QBs usually all end up with the higher ratings in both systems. Maybe the more mobile top QBs get a slightly better QBR due to that.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think they do need to draft a QB at some point in the draft. Tannehill is dealing with durability issues now and will be 31 next season. Even if the org still believes in him there is nothing wrong with them bringing in more talent at the position and having the entire group compete. It also gives you a possible future option if Tannehill never reaches another level, gets hurt or they simply move on. Management and Gase have to do what’s best for the team for the present and the future. I could easily see Tannehill back in 2019 with Falk and a rookie competing.

If we draft a rookie QB, at least try to find a guy who isn’t overly limited and has the skills to play at the NFL level and isn’t a dark horse who has to overcome physical limitations. Falk fits into that category – his cons are not a very strong arm and isn’t very quick of foot, but so was Tom Brady when he came out of college. But he’s smart and has a good delivery. You want the guy you draft to be better than him physically and make the competition legit.

However, it’s still too early to definitively say that any one of them is better than Tannehill. The top-flight rookie QBs — of course — went to the worst teams in the NFL last year, save Lamar Jackson. Plus Darnold and Allen have sustained injuries this year.

I think the question becomes: would any rookie QB taken in this past Draft have success with the way Adam Gase is calling his Offense? I say no, and that answers a lot of questions for me.

Trick question Wyo because you feel a certain way so you have a hard time accepting an answer based on how you feel. For me it’s easy, I think Tannehill is terrible so anyone is better. I really like Jacoby Brissett and Josh Dobbs get both and fire every other QB we have and be done with it. Move on.

Incidentally, Brissett has a perfect passer rating against us this year, lol

    Son,

I’m definitely not a “Tanne-hater” nor “Tanne-lover” (sorry, Tim!)… I’m in between and try to keep it real. And while I agree that Tannehill isn’t the answer, I’m not sure Kirk Cousins would look good under Gase with all this dink-n-dunk nonsense that he calls.

I think I’m just about ready to move on from both Gase and Tannehill.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

But definitely ready to move on from Tannehill, regardless. It’s time to change directions at the QB position after 7 years, and feel we should have drafted a QB at some point in the ’18 Draft.

I like the ’20 draft for a QB and getting a vet this off season, I’d like to get one of these stud DT’s in the upcoming draft and the depth at QB in the draft doesn’t excite me.

I’m no fool though I know that my reward for being a life long fan is year 8, like 8 and 8, of Tannehill. I’m thrilled beyond words.
He’s a great leader they’ll tell me (again)
He knows the offense they’ll tell me
He’s finally fully healthy they’ll tell me
This is the year he breaks out they’ll tell me
Our o line will be healthy they’ll tell me

What they won’t/don’t/can’t see is that he’s just a terrible passer.

    —————–
Yup, the depth of this upcoming ’19 Draft QB class is certainly underwhelming. As such, it’ll likely cost an arm an a leg to get to the top, IF there is a franchise QB to be found… and I’m not 100% sold on Herbert, either.

I like your strategy, here. It’s sound, we can draft a stud D-Lineman in ’19, and it sets us up for the ’20 Draft to get a stud QB.

I’m not as down on Gase as many of you are I think he can be fine if we remake the QB room. If he chooses not too I think it seals his fate. We’ll see. If he holds on to this group I seriously doubt I’ll be made the fool on this. Just move on Gase you tried, you waited and it’s got you nowhere cut bait there’s talent out there you aren’t stuck.

Tannehill for Bortles straight up any takers?

Lol, both teams would laugh at the other for offering

  84. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    DID YOU KNOW?

The most prolific Offense our Dolphins have produced with Ryan Tannehill at QB came in 2014, where we were the #11 in scoring Offense and the #14 in Offensive yards.

    HC: Joe Philbin
    OC: Bill Lazor

I’m sorry, but Adam Gase has been a failure. Look at the numbers below…

M13, what happened to not addressing the OL and all that? Now it’s all about Gase dink and dunk? Interesting! So now you throw deep all day with a sub par OL do ya? Just wondering how to do that new math. LOL

  87. Piggy,
I don’t care about the Browns either. Just pointing out that they will be another team that will be surpassing Miami in the win column.

  88. FYI,
Tannehill DID have the option to audible Sunday. He chose not to.

Wyo – Really? You mock Russell Wilson? It’s so ridiculous, it doesn’t even deserve a response, but I like you, so . . .

Pick any parameter you want, he’s top 5 every season. You mentioned W/L, which BTW I don’t believe should be attributed to QB’s, his record is 71-35. He has 186 TD’s, 61 INT’s for a legit 3:1 TD/INT ratio. Find me some other QB’s in the NFL who have that! He has a career passer rating of 100.1. He’s started and played in EVERY game in his career. He’s rushed for 3506 yards and 16 TD’s. His team happens to have a winning record this season, they’d be garbage without him. What could you possibly have against Russell Wilson? I’d kill to have him here in Miami as our QB

If I remember correctly he got there right before the start of the season, didn’t play any pretgames for them and was on a decimated team. I like his arm a lot and he’ll throw it anywhere on the field. He’s a vet who could start and play pretty well.

FIRST OF ALL, KUDOS to Mike E. for one of his best columns EVER!!!
MY bottom line IS THIS: The Miami Dolphins will NEVER get to a Super Bowl as long as Steve Ross is the majority owner of the team!! He is INCAPABLE of picking the right people to run his franchise. GM, Head Coach, Scouting Department or GM. He’s picked one loser after another!
    ————————-
However, if Ross tells his GM to take that QB from West Virginia (Will Grier), we’ll at least have a potential top 10 QB, something we haven’t had since Marino.

  94. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – Kaepernick was a very talented QB. He’s a controversial figure, but he’s probably better than 5-10 starting QB’s right now in the NFL. His passer rating is just slightly above Tannehill, and add in his rushing stats, well, what can I say. He also played and won 2 of 3 playoff games.

  95. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Russel Wilson was picked in the 3rd round in 2012, luckily we picked up jonathon martin in the second, thank god we didn’t get Wilson then, we would have been reaching!

Im patient enough to give a coach his due time to make things work but im not patient enough to keep making excuses year after year, and i dont care how bad the injury issue is with us right now, we are going to have significant injuries every year.
    __________________________________________________________
Respectfully…If you’re patient why would you want to fire a coach who you just hired 2 years ago? do you think that you can keep changing coaches.
    ———————————————————-
Im not really in the fire Gase group, im lingering on the outside of it because i see what they are saying and agree with it but im hesitant to change coaches because its more disruptive to a team to make that change than almost anything else. That would be full reboot and if we did make that change i imagine there would be several moves that i think would be for the detriment of the team. Im kind of like Rock, normally when it comes to coaches im an at least give him his 3-5 before making any decisions, but what im saying is, Gase is hanging by a thread right now and there are moves that if he doesn’t start making soon to show he is making an effort to get things straightened out, then he is going to wear that patience thin.
