2018 Season – Game 13 – Patriots @ Dolphins

The big bad Patriots come into town this week, ranked in the top 5 by many sources, and top 3 by some.  The Patriots have improved on defense each week, and at 9-3, they have a comfortable lead in the AFC East.  On the other hand, the Dolphins are still alive for a wildcard berth in the playoffs as we are the #7 seed in the AFC at the moment.  Time for some payback fellas!  The Patriots demolished the Dolphins up in Foxborough,  now it’s our turn to take one at home.

We were a different team last time we played the Patriots.  We had all of our small, speedy receivers like Albert Wilson, Jakeem Grant and Danny Amendola.  This time, Wilson and Grant are both on I/R, and Amendola who was inactive against the Bills is still nursing a knee injury, so the Patriots will be seeing a different Miami offense.  It’s time for the young dog (Gase) to teach the old dog (Belichick) a lesson.  Belichick easily neutralized or smaller receivers lining up in the nickel and dime formations and not allowing them any space on screens and short passes, and we had no answer.  I’d like to see Gase find answers this week.  The Patriots had the ball for just over 36 minutes, but managed 449 yards of offense.  RB Sony Michel carried 25 times for 112 yards and Brady spread the ball around to numerous receivers.

The Dolphins need to hold on to the ball in this game.  TE A.J. Derby was put on I/R (join the club!), but we still have 3 TE’s, and I think it’s time to use them.  We haven’t featured many 3 TE sets, and we surely haven’t featured Mike Gesicki.  Let’s get O’Leary and Smythe out there as extra blockers and run the ball down their throats.  Who knows, if we run the ball well, maybe Gesicki or Smythe or O’Leary sneak out for a big reception.  We don’t have to open this way either, just have a few wrinkles the Patriots haven’t seen, in other words, don’t be so conventional.  We know the Patriots will likely out execute most teams, but if you give something they don’t expect, maybe you get results.

This past week against the Bills, I saw some things I really liked.  First of all, it may have been my favorite game this season because it looked to me like Gase took the training wheels off of QB Ryan Tannehill.  Tannehill rewarded his HC with one of his best games and the win.  If Amendola can’t go, we’re likely to see Stills, Parker, Butler, Carroo and Isaiah Ford at WR.  That’s a lot more size than the last time we faced them.  The Patriots do have 2 “big” CB’s in McCourty and Gilmore, both 6 feet.  I think this is a game where we need to out-physical the Patriots and and also outsmart them.  Not an easy task with the Evil Emperor stalking the Patriots sidelines, a veteran of many intergalactic takeovers.  We have 3 running backs, I hope we use them all.  Run Gore with 2 or 3 TE’s and impose our will.  Tire them out some and put Drake in to break one or beat a LB in coverage.  Let Ballage get some carries, and please, please find a way to pick up a 3rd and short.  I think the big issue there is we really have no reliable interior OL to get some room, and that definitely is a hindrance.  Heck, get Asiata in there for one of those plays, he’ll be fresh and all he has to do is get some push.  Put him in as a FB, create a small package of plays for him, make it happen!

The stats don’t give us much of a chance, the Patriots are scoring nearly 28 PPG, allowing only 21.6 PPG.  We’re scoring only 20.3 PPG, and allowing 25 PPG.  So what, all that goes in the trash when the teams hit the field.  O’Leary must be thrilled he got a 1 YR extension, but that kid plays hard, and everyone else on this team needs to do the same.  Tannehill played tough last week, he got hit on what seemed like every other throw, and yet he played very well, one of his best.  Build on that.  Let Tannehill continue to throw the ball downfield, and try and exploit certain matchups.  Don’t  be complacent, and please don’t go in there and be cautious and revert back to that lame bubble screen offense, I swear I might blow a gasket if we do.  The Patriots need to keep pace for home field, they currently trail the Chiefs who are 10-2, and are tied with the Texans at 9-3.  They need this game, but I’d like to show them we need it more.  Go get ’em Dolphins!  Statement game!

  3. manitobafinfan says:

Rob: should they not have to play out XPA due to it being a 2 pt play if defence blocks and scores ?? I swear I have seen walk off wins before where XPA still needed to be played out ?

  4. when the players put on the throwback unis, they are putting on unis of success.

im not sure if they felt it or not, but wouldnt surprise Me if they did, and Im certain the players are cognizant of our history at the very least.
We cant wear those unis unless We do em justice, and today, and fortunately We did !
they reminded Me of when the Dolphins were GREAT, and the WIn today, was GREAT

    MAGIC IN MIAMI

  7. stangerx says:

Last play shocked me as much as anyone, but was ready to come on here after the loss and say the team looked sharp today (other than the blocked punts). O had some snap to it and D looked real good against Brady until looked like they tired towards the end.

  8. The Flying Pig says:

  9. i was expecting multiple laterals on the last play, because thats basically all we had except hail Mary, but we werent close enough for hail Mary IMO.
the announcer on the last play is hilarious, he starts off so nonchalant, then hes like freaking out when Drake breaks to the open and it looks like a TD

  10. stangerx says:

Have we actually had a win that stops the hate?
Not even victories could do that before.
Have a feeling gonna be a quiet board.

  11. Ken says:

It’s being called The Miracle in Miami

  12. wyoming85 says:

  13. too bad that wasnt the fest game, the weather is VERY nice in Miami in December,

    • stangerx says:

Don’t do the Fest during the Holiday season. Too many of the people flying in are going elsewhere for T-Day and X-Mus (and don’t want another trip in btwn). But yeah the weather is just fine.

      • i hear ya, but also bear in Mind there were thousands of Pats fans that traveled there for todays game, hope they enjoyed it, lol
some of the best football happens in holiday season

      • stangerx says:

Another reason why whenever it is a Pats game is a no go — tix cost too much cause yes they by them (even if a bucn are So FL transplants).

  14. i just returned from a week in the keys, had so much fun i did not want to come back, and its like a mild summer down there, 75-80 degrees

  15. Tim Knight says:

The Drake = gamer and playmaker. Keep this guy in Miami. 🙂

  16. Ken says:

    Where was Mike E today?

  17. key to the win, NE kicker misses the extra point, lol JK< but,,, it did matter, extra points always matter, he missed a FG too, they could have had 4 more points if he makes those kicks

    • manitobafinfan says:

I told my buddy when it happened that it would come back to haunt them

      • manitobafinfan says:

It was mostly blind hope on my end at the time

      • i believe it, seen it before, extra points have to be made, FG too, its just leaving points off the board that are right there . a missed FG is like a turnover.
when i saw both missed kicks i knew that was a big no no for them, and could wind up huge later.
as a team, You cant squander points and then wonder why u dont have enough points at the end, thats on You

      • stangerx says:

We didn’t kick the XP on the last play. Even if time was out, couldn’t we if it mattered?

      • we didnt need the xtra point at the end, because we won the game and there was no time on the clock,
but hypothetically, if we needed the extra point or 2 to go to OT< or to win, we are allowed to kick or go for two points, even if no time remains on the clock

    • Ken says:

NE left a lot of points on the field. Missed xp, missed fg, sack at end of the half

  18. stangerx says:

“I’ve never seen anything like that in my entire life. It was f—— crazy.”
    — Danny Amendola

  19. stangerx says:

  20. Randy says:

A nice division win at home. You never know in these sorts of games, but I wasn’t expecting a win. Hoping yes…expecting not so much. We found a way to win!

  21. New Age says:

Great game but we still have the flaws I mentioned earlier. I’d love to see us do exactly the same thing we did in 2016, run the ball, control the clock, and have Tannehill manage the game in Alex Smith fashion. Our team has too many injuries but Gase and Tanny will be back next year. It would be nice to see an explosive offense for once and some new talent on our DL. Not going to hold my breath tho. Is that negative enough Stanger, lol?

    • stangerx says:

lol — think about as negative as we will see today. Agree that Tanny could be one good game manager though…… but guess that puts an upper limit on him just saying that.

  22. Rockphin says:

LOL at Kenyon Drake “I was like I got somewhere to be so you know.”

  23. Rockphin says:

Team 155.2 passer rating today. Yes, Tannehill’s pass rating was credited at TD pass on that last play. LOL

  24. Rockphin says:

That was a solid team win today. Frank Gore averaged 7.7 yards per carry. He was tunneling for 5-6 yards a clip man. I like the gameplan today.

  25. Ken says:

I also like the fact that it does look like they are taking the training wheels off Tannehill and let him throw the ball downfield more instead of bubble screens

  26. ocalarob says:

    At Vikings next!

  27. ocalarob says:

This guy Bolden looks pretty good along with Brice Butler, we keep picking up these acorns!

  28. the last play set a NFL record,
longest game winning play from scrimmage with no time left since 1970 merger

  29. Miamis new killer B;s?
    Branden Bolden
    Brice Butler

  30. Rockphin says:

I am still flabbergasted that we didn’t have a yellow flag on the field after that last play. i thought for sure there would be. You can find holding on most any play if you look hard enough.

    • stangerx says:

As half the team was in the endzone doing the whole mosh pit thing…… was counting slowly to five and hoping no flag came up.

  31. ocalarob says:

you can bet Tannehills ankle will be sore tomorrow, i hope he can go next week

  32. Rockphin says:

wow nice stop by the Raiders today.

  33. Rockphin says:

Larson was WAY down field on the game winning play and threw a big block. Some redemption for him, because he has stunk it up.

  34. Ken says:

4-1 in the division that is nice

  35. Rockphin says:

I was standing in front of the TV with my keys in my hand ready to leave as soon as we lost and stood there in shock. There was a delayed reaction while I said, uh uh, now way….where is the flag, holding, block in the back, stepped out and came back in….something.

    NOPE DOLPHINS WIN! DOLPHINS WIN!!

  36. the fest was the only home loss,
we won 6 of 7 in Miami

  37. the last play WAS reviewed, but TD was confirmed

  38. Rockphin says:

So, LAC is prolly gonna get the first WC and we are battling with Balt, Colts and and titans for the other WC right?

Don’t see us in a tie with the Pats but it still good to see you can beat your divisional rivals
    ——————
If Pats won today they clinched first in the AFC East — didn’t happen.
What did happen was we clinched 2nd.

  40. Rockphin says:

Yeah, I don’t see the pats losing two of the next 3. That would be the only way a tie breaker would come into account with NE. especially because they play Pitt, NYJ and Buff.

of course if they fell apart and did lose two of 3 it would be EPIC!

  41. ElephantRider says:

    Watched on dvr…

    HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!

  42. Mike E. says:

That was one helluva game today, and whether Tannehill is the QB next year or not, that boy has some heart, and I admire that tremendously. That was up there with the most exciting plays and endings to a game ever.

  43. son of a son of a shula says:

Oh if we only had held on against Cincy and Indy…

  44. ElephantRider says:

Let’s make throwbacks not throwbacks anymore!

  45. stangerx says:

When you are much older only so many games you will remember, especially the ones with a play at the end.
Wake with the sack for a safety against Cincy.
Camarillo for the TD to stop us from going 0-16.
Fill in some others, but today’s V is the new one to the list….. and it was the Pats!

    • son of a son of a shula says:

Agreed, this one certainly goes on the list. The Chicago game earlier this year was a classic as well.

      • stangerx says:

Chicago game was one of the best ones that have watched, but for some reason don’t think field goal at the end to win will stick in my failing memory as long.

      • Ken says:

Thev1985 Chicago game was classic as was the 1994 Pats game and the 1994 fake spike game

      • stangerx says:

Fake spike is the neighborhood where this play will land. And if you go the win over the Bears….. I’ll go AJ Duhe and his 3 INTs v the Yets in the mud.

  46. stangerx says:

    10 seconds less and then……
    • Quarterback Ryan Tannehill took the snap in shotgun formation at Miami’s 31.
    • Tannehill found Kenny Stills on the right side for a short completion.
    • Stills ran for 14 yards, then lateraled to DeVante Parker.
    • Parker scuttled for another five yards, then lateraled to Kenyan Drake.
    • Drake then wove his way through the last vestiges of the New England defense, including a flailing Rob Gronkowski, for a 50-yard touchdown.

  47. Ken says:

Alright I am emotionally spent. I need to just chill and call it a night. What a win. I am out. Peace

  48. herdfan says:

That last possession of NE did them in. They got that last 1st down and I thought we were done. But they went for the big play, threw for the TD, and honestly, Fitzpatrick got the flag but if he hadn’t gone after …I can’t even remember who it was…lol…but if not, that would have been a TD and game over. So that penalty did sort of save us. That, and the fact that if they hadn’t thrown it in the first place, had run, they would have used up all the clock and we were done. Then we hold them to a FG instead. OMG. I had gone into work, had the game on my laptop on my desk. I was yelling and I was the only one in the building! lol

We were meant to win that game!

    Go Dolphins!

  49. stangerx says:

In other news today — Mark Sanchez was 6 of 14 for 38 yards and sacked 5 times before he was pulled. Might be the last Sanchez news you ever get unless he is arrested.

  50. CavalierKong says:

Glorious win! Unbelievable finish! NE in December with them very much needing to win. Still in the hunt with 3 games left. Happy ape.

  51. BailBondMike says:

We actually arrested 2 instead of one. Took a long while for 1 guy. 3 hours of surveillance paid off. Money saved $11,500 (for the boss). I’m on straight salary so I have no liability.

    NOW BACK TO THEM DOLPHINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  52. CavalierKong says:

I don’t get why we didn’t have to kick an XP at the end (although the smart play in that situation would be to go for two and just kneel). I could have sworn the rules would still require us to run the play, unless maybe you can decline it? The score happened in regulation even if it was with time expiring…

Still so high on that finish…

  53. The Flying Pig says:

Between Gronkowskin on the field o. The last play and the Patriots missed opt to take all the time off the clock – not belicheats best coaching job

  54. CavalierKong says:

We had the game DVRd, and were watching from behind all morning. We literally caught up to the feed right before the snap of the game winning play, so we saw it as it happened live. Best game of the year.

    • stangerx says:

Best game of the year? Best game in a long, long time. Pulling off my word of the day positive adjectives — phenomenal.

      • CavalierKong says:

Whipping the Pets and shutting down their offense in the Miami game last year was pretty awesome too, but I actually enjoyed this game from start to finish (first time this year).

  55. Mike E. says:

Kong – My nephew said the NFL changed the rule, no need for the extra point. I forgot which game he mentioned from last year where a team won the game on the last play, scored a TD, and then both teams left the field, but the refs made them come back on the field to kick the extra point, and they don’t want that to happen again.

    • CavalierKong says:

Ah, thank you, Mike! I wasn’t sure if I was going crazy or if there had been a rule change. It makes sense to let the scoring team decline to run the play.

  56. Mike E. says:

I’m not positive, but I don’t think we’ve lost in the throwbacks. If we made the throwbacks our regular unis, would we have another undefeated season?

    • CavalierKong says:

      Keep the throwbacks!!!

      • Mike E. says:

They are so much better than the regular uni’s. I think we’re stuck with those for at least another season. You have to request a uniform change, and it takes time. It would have to be for 2020 I believe.

      • CavalierKong says:

It would be great if the team made that move. I don’t know a single Dolphins fan that likes the new logo and colors better than the old ones. It’s a no-brainer in my book.

  57. Mike E. says:

This was a really big win today. I hope it’s a springboard to a strong finish. That would be something.

    • ElephantRider says:

There’ll be the poo pooing by some on here that the win wasnt good enough and the Cheats lost it instead of Fins winning. But who cares? Wouldn’t it be something if they go up to MN and beat them too? That’s run the table stuff…..let’s do it

      GO FINS

      • Mike E. says:

Listen, I can be as negative as anyone on here, well almost anyone, but you have to give credit when credit is due. This was a huge win, when it mattered. NE did not want to lose this game, and that hurt them for home field. Just keep up the good work!

  58. Mike E. says:

You guys were talking about favorite games earlier, The home opener in ’94 against NE was always one of my favorite games. 39-35, Marino’s first game back from the achilles injury. That was a freaking awesome game, back and forth all day. What a game for Marino and Irving Fryar.

BTW – I want Gesicki to be like George Kittle next season. Holy flying f*ck that guy is good.

  59. Krishna says:

Great, all around effort. Tough QB play, one of his best games, imo.

I think herd called NE on its arrogance with the 3rd and goal pass vs run that stops the clock. I thought that’s something the dolphins would do and we’d call it horrible game mgt.

Then, Gronk as a safety for hail Mary that wasn’t. …another bad play call defensively or a brilliant counter call offensively to open up the field underneath.

What an unbelievable WIN! And, against the perfect team.

  60. LMAO! Belichick mind fucked Ross andthe fanbase into keeping this loser regime and coaching staff and ensuring the mediocrity continues

    • Rockphin says:

Can’t even enjoy a win. You have to make up some bull shit ridiculous conspiracy theory.

Bellicheat did not lose this game on purpose for any reason let alone to trick Ross into keeping this team.

  61. Rockphin says:

The nine lead changes in the game yesterday were the most in either teams history.

    Exciting game!

  62. Krishna says:

I was going to celebrate with a candy cane and enjoy every luck of it….69 licks for every yard on the last play of the game.

The new unis look soft, cindarellaish. those old unis with the black shoes look bad-ass!

  64. ocalarob says:

the people who didn’t see the whole game just the highlight reel probably wouldn’t get the same effect as one who was rooting for and watched the entire game.

great game, before that last play i had thought we lost as well, that’s what made that play even greater!

  65. ocalarob says:

we need to come out of Minnesota with a win…8-6 has a nice ring to it.

  66. Krishna says:

The team kept battling. ….never quit…opened it up….then, who are these players. ..

  67. Ken says:

What a dumbass. Belichick purposely didn’t clinch and most likely lost a chance at the number 1 seed just so we keep Gase and Tannenbaum around. Talked about getting mind fucked I am pretty sure somebody fucked Prof Lou’s brains out literally

  68. ocalarob says:

Orob, I heard it as simply ‘Boise’ and named after a crazy play that Boise State ran to win a bowl game against Oklahoma. I can’t remember the year but it was when Adrian Peterson was with them, so it was a while back.
I heard one of the guys on Good Morning Football describing it and also heard Drake himself say it was called Boise. Cool stuff.

  73. stangerx says:

Sports Center led with the play and showed it 5 frick’n times. The host called it the best play of the year in any sport.

  74. stangerx says:

And Drake made that play work by simply slowing down. He almost starts to lope and the defenders around him relax, like they are expecting him to do a lateral, throw a short pass or something……then he suddenly kicks it into high gear and ZOOOM.

Lol @ the extra point contraversy

Wanting that extra point is a testament to our fandom and how much we hate the cheats

    But forget it oinkeroos
The right thing to do is to end he game

I’m sure it affects a tie breaker somewhere
But if you down to 1 point in a tiebreaker down the line of tie breakers – fuck you anyway…lol

Imagine if we didn’t have the rule
Teams looking for a tiebreaker edge should be going for 2 points to get the extra edge and bc they having nothing to lose having won the game already

    And that kills sportsmanship

This isn’t college before the bcs
We don’t need to pour it on

The rule is a good rule so co he’s don’t have to worry about that

Drake was crazy emotional after the game, he was having a hard time keeping his thoughts together during the interview. That was great to see.

  82. stangerx says:

Hugest play could be was at the end, but was a huge one at the end of the first half too on the Brady sack and no field goal. Brady said after the game that he thought he had a time out that he didn’t. He throws that ball away and after the miracle we would have been going for 2 points to send to overtime.
