Happy New Year Dolphins Fans

Happy New Year 2019 with colorful fireworks

Well, 2018 wasn’t a great season for the Miami Dolphins. I believe to most of us, a change was more than welcome, and the Miami Dolphins owner Steve Ross did not disappoint. Apparently, he’s as displeased with the teams performance as we are, and change was a necessity. The Adam Gase era is now over, lasting only 3 seasons in Miami. The offensive minded coach was expected to bring the Dolphins to new heights, but instead it was new lows. The Dolphins offense finished the season ranked #31 of 32 teams in total yards per game at just under 299 yards per game. #26 in scoring at 19.9 PPG. At 7-9, the Dolphins ended up with a -114 point differential. It’s kind of amazing that we were 7-9 considering how awful and inept we were on both sides of the ball.

The good news – Not only is Adam Gase removed as HC, Dowell Loggains is gone as OC, and Matt Burke also gone as DC.

More good news – Mike Tannenbaum is demoted from VP of Football Operations, and GM Chris Grier now absorbs that title.

GM Chris Grier has already begun the search for a new Head Coach. Rumors are flying around, and it’s difficult to really believe a lot of what is said, so take caution in what you start to fall for. Is John Harbaugh really going to leave the Baltimore Ravens? Is Jim Harbaugh going to leave the college ranks and leave Michigan to break his back again working 20 hour days during the NFL season? Is foot-loving Rex Ryan going to land feet first in Miami? We don’t really know, but it sure is fun to speculate.

The thing that makes me most happy about this transition is Chris Grier is speaking music to my ears. He says he wants to build a team, not try for the quick fix. (Check!)

Grier says we will not be big spenders in Free Agency, especially on veteran players, it would only be on young players, and no overspending. (Check!)

Really, that’s all I can ask for. A plan that can bring the Miami Dolphins to a point where winning is sustainable and consistent. Of course, it’s just a plan, and as we know the plan still has to be executed, and executed well. Regardless, I’m happy, very happy with the entire philosophy. It’s precisely where I think this team should be heading.

As of the moment, we do know the Miami Dolphins have asked the Bears permission to interview their DC Vic Fangio. Fangio is a long time NFL defensive coach, since 1995, first with the Carolina Panthers, the Indianapolis Colts, The Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers and then of course the Chicago Bears. The Bears lead the NFL allowing only 17.7 PPG, astounding in this new era of high scoring affairs. Personnel always has something to do with it, and the Bears trading for Khalil Mack had a huge impact on the defense.

Other names that will be bandied about are Mike McCarthy, Bruce Arians, Urban Meyer, Eric Bieniemy, Mike Munchak, Rex Ryan and more . . .

When Chris Grier makes his decision, I hope that the Head Coach chosen share many of the same philosophies and visions for the team, and then are able to fill out their staff with qualified coordinators. I truly hope that ST’s coordinator Darren Rizzi is still part of our team. Special teams has been an excellent unit here, and that’s all due to Rizzi, so I hope he’s being considered.

Here’s to hoping that we finally got this right, and Dolphins fans everywhere can enjoy competitive football for many years to come. As I’ve said in other articles, taking a step or two backwards is a necessary part of rebuilding, and I’m willing to take those lumps. A 3-13 or 4-12 season will bring better things for 2020, when some serious QB talent is expected to be available. That doesn’t mean I think we shouldn’t take one this season, I definitely hope we do. Doesn’t have to be early, but we need competition at the QB position, so somewhere in this draft I hope we find it.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everybody I hope all is well with you all…..!!!

  3. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Rex Ryan would be my choice our Defense would become a top Defense and if he brings a very good OC we would turn things around IMO….

  4. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

Rex would make things FUN! I love his bravado that’s exactly what this team needs.

  5. Haskins struggles with pocket presence. You watch this guy pre-snap and he does things you’d never see Tannehill do and he’s only a college qb. Watch how he points things out to his wr group or sets his protections. He’s already light years ahead of where our qb was and he’s not even in the NFL yet.

The guy never gets flustered either. People say he struggles under pressure but he doesn’t feel pressure. He moves on to the next play and that’s it. I’ve never seen this guy cave to pressure in a single game this season. Sure, he’s had some plays where he could have done better but I’ve seen him stand in there under pressure plenty of times and just deal.

The plus side is he’s got all the tools to work with from the arm strength to the I.Q. He’s going to be one of the better qb’s in the NFL for the next 12-15 yrs

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I’m trying to think of ways to snag him this year. I think he’d definitely be worth a few years of thin drafts but we have so little capital and Arizona would probably want the highest hul ever.

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Good luck Miami Dolphins! If you screw this up Chris Grier, there are plenty of fans and media who know better, just know that. LOL

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just remember… no Head Coach who won a Super Bowl ever won another one with another team. Not one!!!! If you believe in that sort of thing. 😉

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Hey markeyh, hope all is well.

  8. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dwayne Haskins is 21 years old. What will he be in the NFL at 25? I think he can be a top 10 QB within the next 5 years. He’s not going to be easy to land. He would go top 5 this year if he declares.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Drew Lock has the size and arm, but man he reminds me of Jay Cutler. He even resembles him. LOL

I would take Lock at #13 if he was there. It’s not much different than Big Ben, Cutler, Mahomes or Watson being there around #10. It can happen. You never know!

  9. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Happy New Year all.. here’s hoping the HC is a quick search and sign.. I like Rizzi’s Passion, would it translate into a HC position ? Or would it wear out quick ala Harbaugh in yer face style.. I dunno but hope for a long term solution finally ….

Mike and Son : come live on my street and ya can throw snowballs at each other for 6 months if the year…. I won’t be home for next 2 weeks as we head to Cuba in 4 hrs.. hoping they have NFL Playoff coverage …

    Go Phins 2019 !!!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think Rizzi is a psycho like Jim Harbaugh is. They are all fiery, but Rizzi is more grounded. I know he would be like we kept it same ole same ole, but I do think he’d be a good HC.

For me, I agree with some of the pundits, can you put together a quality staff? If we go young, we need someone who knows how to coach 53+.

2019 has no big aspirations. It’s a full blown transition year.

  10. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

    No Harbaughs!!

  11. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I believe Ross was convinced that we needed a hard reset, Gase was in a win now mode and that’s probably the reason they parted ways.

as for Tannenbaum being reassigned, that’s a less dramatic way of saying he’s been fired however he will still get paid for the next two years but his days of having any input into the future of this team are over.

if you’re hiring a head coach does it really matter who you hire? we will suck for the next 3 years. I believe Tannehill is also history.

  12. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i believe Miami ranks as the worst team to work for of all 8 nfl teams in need of a coach due to the fact that we have no QB and are openly saying we are in a reset mode.

for that reason Rizzi may get that job, he has a repore with the players and absolutely no pressure to win

  13. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

CALL ME THE ENEMY OF BIENEMY!!!
Current “hot” HC candidate Eric Bieniemy is all the rage now. But I’m NOT buying him.
    TWO FACTS to ponder:
    1) He has NEVER BEEN a head coach AT ANY LEVEL despite being 49 years old.
    2) He’s the O-coordinator of the Chiefs BUT DOESN’T CALL ANY OF THE PLAYS!!
Sounds to me like a combination of Philbin and Gase.
I’d much rather have a candidate with ACTUAL HC EXPERIENCE either in the NFL or at a major college. And I’d much rather have a coordinator who has actually called plays!!
BRIAN FLORES, age 37, has actually called plays for New England’s defense.
There are several candidates out there who have HC experience (the Harbaughs and Munchak for instance). Others have been O-Coordinators or D-Coordinators and ACTUALLY CALLED PLAYS!
Bieniemy may be a really nice guy. But he lacks the qualifications I’m looking for.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

      OD,

I usually agree but Bieniemy is from a fantastic coaching tree and I’m not sure how much any of them called plays outside of Reid. I know Nagy never was a HC and Pederson only coached a HS team for 4 years. I think for any HC, it comes down to what coaches you can bring with you. More than anything else, I think winning takes great organization and teaching skills. Gase didn’t have either. Both Harbaughs do though.

  14. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Lol @ the coaching debates

Sorry guys. It you are lying to yourselves if you think there are any disqualifying characteristics of any predictable elements as to who will be successful or not

We can criticize this process and the candidates but this is one area where you just don’t know

I beleive change was necessary. I’m happy to see us make a change. I hope we make the right choice if the right choice is here to be made. But the one thing I know is that it would be stupid to stick with something that was not working – so the coaching change, whomever it is and as unpredictable as it is – is welcome. And if the next guy takes us down an path of losing, I’ll be ready for another change. And if the guy after him does the same, I’ll be ready for another change

And again and again and again until it works

No one should be lying to themselves. Getting it right isn’t easy. Trying sometimes means you fail but not trying at all guarantees it.

  15. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I wouldn’t worry about Bienemy coming here,
he is a top prospect and at this point Miami is one of the worst destinations a new HC would want to come too.

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – What did Gase do that makes you think he’s in “Win Now” mode? Also, If Ross wasn’t in “Win Now” mode, why wouldn’t Gase have followed the plan?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ross said it at the press conference and that’s how we handled the roster with all the vets we added. I’ve been saying we were in a win now mode for the last 3 years even though we also added quite a bit of youth. It didn’t pan out.

  17. D's avatar D says:

I absolutely take Lock if he is there at 13. From what i have heard about Lock is he has Cutler talent but a more coach-able attitude and more mentally stable. They say his personality is more like Eli Manning, goofy, vocal on the field but pretty reserved off it.

  18. D's avatar D says:

Unless shit starts coming in on Haskins that slows his roll he will be the first QB taken. He is getting blown up around the journalist scouters. Im not sure i know what the real opinion of him is, but right now he seems to be on a real upswing. I think though there are about 4 candidates would out pick at 13 so im not having an issue with us having a quality QB option at 13. Is it kismet that our next QB could be drafted at 13………

  19. D's avatar D says:

Hey Rock, ya got your replacement for Denney at the senior bowl this year. Nick Moore from UGA. Just hope we have a coach by then to scout him lol.

  20. Randy's avatar Randy says:

If we hire “the next hot head coach” candidate, I’m gonna shiv somebody.

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m pretty neutral as to who we hire for HC. I’m not stuck on a veteran who has been an NFL HC, and I’m OK with a rookie too.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Same here. Though I do think Miami is a good destination for a first time HC. No pressure to win right away and he can mold the team the way he wants to.

  22. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m trying to find scenarios by which we can maximize trade value, so as to have the ability to trade up in 2020. Best I can come up with? Trade Tannehill and another player to the team Adam Gase becomes HC for a 1st rounder. That other player? It would have to be either Reshad or Xavien. AND, the team Gase becomes HC of would have to have cap space to burn. We could actually come away with maybe more than a 1st for 2020.

But there’s no way I’m wanting to part ways with either Reshad or Xavien.

    Just thinking aloud, y’all.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      And then there’s this…

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The Browns didn’t tank, they made one bad decision after another and were bad.

You don’t tank, you follow a plan of rebuilding, you compete and go from there.

  23. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  24. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, it’s a fallacy that Tim Tebow lead the Bronco to the playoffs, they backed in and it was their defense and kicker that lead them. LOL

He did play well in the playoff win against PIT and then they got destroyed by the Pats.

The Ravens defense is what got them to the playoffs. Jackson has done some good things, but they didn’t get their on his arm that’s for sure.

    • D's avatar D says:

Its not a fallacy, its fact. He might not have been solely to credit for it, and i dont think thats even debatable, but he was their QB and he did lead the team. I think people try to hard to either credit the guy for it or take it away from him and thats based upon their either like or dislike for him.

      • D's avatar D says:

1-4 and headed for the basement to 8-8 and in the playoffs. They had a span of 6 games that they won….like Tannehill gets credited for, that they put together, and won 7 of 8 from the point Tebow took over. Again, im not crediting Tebow for these wins, they played from behind a lot and that was also partially on Tebow, but you cant call a spade a spade, and then turn around and call it a diamond when its your guys.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They lost their last 3 games of the season and backed in at 8-8. Not sure how that equals lead.

I don’t dislike Tebow, but he sucked as a passer.

  25. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    D,

I totally agree with ya on Tim Tebow. He wasn’t the sole reason the Broncos made their playoff run, but he certainly didn’t hurt them, either. There is a certain ‘magic’ surrounding the guy, and he’s been known to be clutch.

I respect the MAN that Tebow is, but I certainly wouldn’t want him to be my QB, either. I can appreciate what he’s done, though! 😉

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s magically out of the league. LOL

How did you back in if you started 1-4….. sounds to me you didnt have anywhere further to back into. Did we back into the playoffs in 2016?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No we won 9 of our last 10. Seriously, D? I think you’re sensitive about Tebow. You’re a Gators fan right?

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    LOL @ D

It was only a matter of time until you brought up Tannehill.

    ___________________________________

Gase had final say on the 53 and would not give that ground up.
I think they were in a moderated win now because they were not signing any high ticket long term FAs, they wanted to clear the books by 2020.
Ross and Gase were on different sides of the fence or so i read.

you cant get quality picks unless you tank. mediocrity breeds mediocrity.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

BS!!! You can find good players in any round. Happens all the time.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

yes but you have a better chance with lower round picks, and also not signing top shelf FA’s will hurt winning, we will have a young team loaded with in experienced players. therefore we will lose.

I’m not against this plan i just think this is the reality of going in this direction.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s different. That’s not tanking, that’s rebuilding. Jimmy Johnson blew the team up in his first year and went 8-8. He still had Marino but he released most of the high-priced vets and went really young. I’m all for it.

  29. D's avatar D says:

Tim, i brought up Tanny to show you the discrepancy between how you credited Tanny for his run in games and how you discredited Tebow’s. Same position, same results, and you say one thing for one and another for the other. Its not a shot at Tanny its a comparison to show your bias.

    • D's avatar D says:

If i wanted to bring up Tanny i would have pointed out the many reasons we should be glad the guy wont be here next year….i didnt do that. Im sad we are having to start over at QB, but the guy couldnt cut it.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You’re the one hung up on that. You do it all the time. Have at it, doesn’t bother me. 🙂

  30. D's avatar D says:

Still going eh? So let me guess the Timmy thing is meant to bother me I guess. You know it’s not my name right?

I was just talking to a friend about music and a Tannehill discussion broke out. How does that keep happening? LOL

  31. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, I think we’re moving on from Tannehill as well. He’s likely headed for journeyman/backup status. Wow look at how sensitive I am about it. You’ve got me all wrong, dude. LOL

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Tanking is purposely trying to lose, not starting over with a new GM/Czar, HC, staff and players. It sure will be new and different and gives us a lot to talk about. Not that we didn’t talk about the status quo. LOL

  32. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    Class…classss…STFU!

  33. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Tim Tebow took Denver to the playoffs because teams could not account for his Fullback style running ability, he beat us in Miami with it.
he was a huge part of their success and the man has won every where he’s been given a chance.

  34. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  55. I also think Rizzi was just as guilty of being part of the “win now” crew as anyone. Thanks, but, no thanks. I don’t want another head coach who leaves wasted, undeveloped, underdeveloped talent standing on the sidelines.

That said, I think it’s 50/50 he gets the job.

I watched the games and his STs units perform on a high level – KR and PR for TDs, blocked punts, FGs, Xpts (returned for a score), solid coverage, getting the most out of rookie kickers and punters. Why are you trying to bring the guy down when he deserves none of that? I guarantee you if you sat down with coaches and players who have been around him they would call you clueless.

Don’t just say “no”. Which one of them is a better choice and why?

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Rizzi over Lou… beep beep and beep beep yeah!!!! LOL

The reason I like Rizzi is I think he’d be more involved in all phases of the game. Field position and clock is what he does. Let the OC and DC do their thing and go from there. Football isn’t that complicated. Let leaders lead and let players play. The best unit on our team for many years has been STs. John Harbaugh was a ST’s coach.

If it’s right in front of you go for it! If Rizzi is horrible we’re in the midst of a rebuild anyway. The way it seems is we won’t be relevant until 2021. I see no way Rizzi is horrible. It’s always about players and talent anyway.

  81. Are we REALLY going to go with another 1st timer AGAIN?! Seriously?!
We’ve been down this road before and it’s never turned out well.
    And Rizzi? Fools gold.

  82. I’d give Rizzi two seasons before he loses it because he’ll be out of his league. He’s a good special teams coach but he’s nowhere near ready

  83. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Lou,

Your comments make no sense. Fat Ryan was a loser too. 61-66 and two winning seasons in his 8 year career. Those were the first two seasons with a stacked and older roster. His win now philosophy is the exact opposite of what we are trying here. I can’t think of a worst idea than giving this guy a third chance to show Dolphins what average is. We already know too well.

It’s not like Ryan has the strongest connections. His DC was his brother and his DB coach was Ed Reed the last year at Buffalo. That’s the definition of unable to find coaches who want to follow you.

  84. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Everyone was a first timer……There are examples of them being successful. I feel like this was just discussed.

  85. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Bieniemy is a better choice in my eyes. Here’s some successful Reid proteges;
    John Harbaugh
    Matt Nagy
    Doug Pederson
    Ron Riviera

Reid has a huge coaching tree and just like with QBs, his proteges seem to gain something being around the dude. Some have failed but I’d rather go with someone who knows an explosive offense over someone with a defensive background and knows explosive foot odor.

  86. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

TIM,PIGGY, Etc. –I was, to use a Piggy phrase, just busting people’s chops a bit RE: NFL HC experience. THAT SAID, I DO BELIEVE that having previous experience as either a major college HC or experience as an NFL HC is more likely, over the long haul, to produce a candidate who can get your favorite team to the promised land. YES, raw rookie coaches have, infrequently, had immediate success as a HC in the NFL. But, the odds are against it.

In Miami’s case, every playoff game Miami has won in their 53 year history has been won by an HC with prior pro experience as a HC. And, while I have NOT researched this issue, I would guess that in the majority of cases, the winning coach in an NFL playoff game HAD PRIOR EXPERIENCE as a head coach either at a major college OR at another NFL franchise before he won his first NFL playoff game. I believe this to be true for those playoff games played since the 2 leagues merged in 1970.

ROSS’s decisions to hire HC’s with no prior HC experience has gone against the history of the sport. Perhaps he thinks he can hire these guys with no prior HC experience FOR LESS MONEY than he can hire those with prior HC experience. If that’s what he believes, than, indeed, he probably can hire those guys for less money on average. But if he really is willing to “spend what it takes to bring the best coach to Miami,” he’s going to have to prove that to me. Prior owners Joe Robbie and Wayne Hiuzenga really had to open their wallets to sign Don Shula and Jimmy Johnson to lengthy deals. I haven’t heard the exact salaries that Ross has paid HIS head coaches, but I’m guessing NONE of them got salaries that would put them near the top of the NFL list of head coaching salaries.

IMHO, Ross needs to factor in prior HC experience to a greater degree than he has in the past IF HE TRULY DOES WANT TO WIN A SUPER BOWL. On the other hand, if he just wants to hire another guy with NO HC EXPERIENCE, that will tell me he just wants someone who can get him another 2 years down the road before he sells the Dolphins soon after they host the 2021 Super Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium. Putting on a successful Super Bowl will make the franchise worth MORE THAN IT IS NOW. Why spend top bucks for a coach if you’re NOT going to own the team for more than a couple years?

All jokes aside, Rex makes it about himself, which might be good for a year or two, but wears thin on the team and everyone else soon after that. He has coached 2 of the 4 teams in the division, so our opponents know what to expect, and the last six years of his coaching, were more or less able to stop it/him. He brings nothing dynamic at this point, was not getting top notch assistants and has no real legacy in the league. My opinion, we would basically end up .500 during his tenure- we’ve been able to do that without him, so I don’t see that he brings anything we can’t accomplish without him. But I am not saying that I know any of the other names being mentioned would do better, as I have no way of knowing.

    • Pete Carroll was an arrogant asshole. He went 6-10 with the Jets in his only season. He went 10-6 w/NE in his first season followed by 9-7 and 8-8.

When he came back to the NFL he was 7-9 his first two seasons in Seattle. His first season at USC, after leaving NE, he was 6-6.

I’d be willing to take a chance on Rex. He’s got the experience and he’s been in the AFC Championship twice. Yeah, he was a bit of an idiot when he was a coach with the Jets but when you’re in NY you get a lot of exposure. Miami, not so much. He’s out of the limelight in Miami. It’s not the market NY is and, who knows, maybe the guy settled down some since then.

All I know is we’ve had success with the guys who had NFL head coaching experience and we haven’t had any with 1st timers. Success leaves clues. If not Rex then go after Mike Smith or someone else who was an NFL head coach before. I’m finished with 1st timers.

No one here can possibly really comprehend what any of the coaches can do for our team. It’s not as easy as defining a position player, the HC relies on so many things to be successful, including the GM, his coordinators, and then of course the talent on the roster. I believe Rizzi is a guy the players will play for, and believe in. If he can bring in good coordinators, which is basically the same issue for any of the candidates, I think he can be successful here. He knows our roster better than anyone else coming in, knows our strengths, weaknesses. That has to count for something.

And, personally, I don’t care that he knows the roster. Still needs to be able to do the job as a head coach. A lot of 1st timers who didn’t make it said the same thing. They weren’t prepared for all the things they had to do as a head coach.
