Dolphins news and Senior Bowl week

First news on the docket is the Miami Dolphins have granted former OC Dowell Loggains permission to seek employment elsewhere. Loggains has all but been named Adam Gase’s OC for the NY Jets. You know it makes me angry typing Gase’s name? I hope he does miserably for the Jets. The biggest news though is the Miami Dolphins have sent Dan Marino to scout the QB’s at the Senior Bowl.

The Dolphins are in obvious need of a QB, especially once they either trade or cut Ryan Tannehill, which would leave Luke Falk and newly acquired Jake Rudock as the only QB’s on the roster. That doesn’t mean we will be drafting a QB in the 1st RD, but it is a legitimate possibility. The North roster has 2 possible 1st RD picks in Drew Lock and Daniel Jones, as well as later picks Ryan Finley and Trace McSorley. The South roster has Will Grier, Gardner Minshew, Jarret Stidham and Tyree Jackson. If you like big QB’s, Tyree Jackson is 6’7 245. Marino should be watching all these QB’s closely, we simply need to add QB talent no matter what.

We all know a lot of the top talent in this draft lies in the defensive line, the defensive ends and tackles. The majority of talent in this draft are Juniors or lower, but there are a handful of talented Seniors as well. At DE there’s Montez Sweat, Zach Allen, Jaylon Ferguson, Carl Granderson and Charles Omenihu, and DT Isaiah Buggs.

Unfortunately, one of our resident scouts here “D” will not be attending the Senior Bowl as he has the last few years, but I will be watching practices and whatever else I can, and I’m sure a few people here will be watching as well, so any info or observations you have, let us know.

has a lot to do with scheme, ever since we’ve been in this wide 9 we’ve been getting gashed, maybe it’s time to go to a skinny 9.
if you consistently use the same scheme over and over teams will locate it’s weaknesses and exploit them
i think our lack of defense had to do more with the coaches than the players
    >>>>
And I agree with that pretty much 100%.

  2. naplesfan2010 says:

changing the subject a bit, but not really.
Who SHOULD we get in FA?
Some intriguing replacements / upgrades at DT / DE / OLB are out there.

Terrell Suggs OLB, Zadarius Smith OLB, and CJ Moseley LB from the Ravens.
Frank Clark DE and KJ Wright LB from the Seahawks
Trey Flowers DE from the cesspool
    Preston Smith LB Redskins
    Kwon Alexander, LB, Buccaneers
    Jordan Hicks, LB, Eagles

    Rodger Saffold, OG, Rams

Do you want any of these to solve our DL problems?

    • Tim Knight says:

I would sign Trey Flowers. Flores know him well and he’d be with us for 4 seasons before he’s 30 years old. He’s a very good player and is a fit for our new defense. If we did that we probably don’t go Edge early in the draft. But Flowers might be out of our price range.

  3. Seeing that scouts were not impressed with qb’s at Senior Bowl

    I hate the word “tank”
Unless we completely gut the roster we can still show up

Not even real sure where “tank” came from
I heard Ross say he hopes he doesn’t have to see 3-13
But that’s far from ”we’re throwing in the towel for a #1 pick” lol

We need a couple of home run drafts
Must hit on our 1’s & 2’s and some luck with a couple of 3/4 rounders
Sprinkle in the right f/a guys…
But with a new staff, if they have a solid plan
And isn’t that what’s supposed to get you hired
    A solid plan
We should be able to produce results fairly quickly

Unless full blown rebuild is coming

I say screw the tank !

  5. Mike E. says:

Naples – Burke didn’t do our defense any favors, but our defensive players didn’t do Burke any favors either. Not sure Burke didn’t have heart, I think more like he didn’t have the head to adjust and fix recurring problems, and I’ll give a hefty dose of blame to Gase the Gifted for completely ignoring the defense, after supposedly “Rushing to hire coaches”. If he knew he left the damn defense in poor hands, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! I can’t forgive Gase for that, he really blew it here, or maybe just really blew.

    • Tim Knight says:

I don’t think it was about lack of heart with the players and coaches. But for some reason under Burke the defense was always having communication breakdowns.

  6. ocalarob says:

with O’Leary, Smythe and Gesicki, do we resign Marquies Gray coming off an achilles injury?

  7. Mike E. says:

The NBA tankathon is absurd. Cavs have won 9 games out of 50. Knicks 10 out of 47 and Suns 11 out of 51. Who can lose more? That is a busted system. Guarantee you if they changed the draft process to any team in the bottom 15 has an equal chance at the #1 pick, those teams would be winning more games.

Ugly day for the Pro Bowl, been raining since the middle of the night and all day so far.
I think it rained last year too. It’s definitely NOT Hawaii…

Ryan Finley is the new stiff you guys draft in every mock this year, y’all had one last year too and he did so well that I can’t even think of his name. We have a pile of Ryan Finley types already – they get you nowhere.

    • Tim Knight says:

We need to wait to see what our draft looks like. We might trade some players off to get some extra picks and that will change the dynamic of the draft. Also just because we’re rebuilding doesn’t mean we won’t be active in FA – just that we won’t be big players for the top FAs. So once we know what our roster looks like after FA, then the draft will look a little more clear on what we might do. Still believe in BPA especially early then start to blend into need mode.

    • The Flying Pig says:

I’m basiically targeting 2020 at this rate

the only QB that looks worth taking the risk at 13 is Haskins if he is there
      but he won;t be there

      • Tim Knight says:

A little early for that no? LOL

This offseason FA and draft is going to be very important in the rebuilding process. We still have to find 90 players to start with to eventually become our 53. If the prize QB isn’t available so be it, but lots of other areas need upgrades.

I think Drew Lock looks the part of an NFL QB. He has the size, the arm, decent mobility and he seems to be a good character kid with no off the field nonsense. I don’t see many limitations in his game. You can develop a guy like that. It’s the QBs with obvious limitations that would worry me.

  12. Tim Knight says:

Not surprising but it makes you wonder what their plan will be.

    • New Age says:

It’s a bit funny that a top 10 list only has 9 people on it and 3 questions marks lumped together. “Here’s our top 10 players this week but one of them was on the bench during the game….” Lol.

  13. Mike E. says:

I’m not giving up on Drew Lock and Daniel Jones because of the Senior Bowl game, that’s ludicrous. It’s just one part of the process.

  14. New Age says:

Jones looked pretty good in the Senior Bowl. Lock flashed talent but that’s about it. Enjoyed watching that behemoth QB from Buffalo, Jackson, who looked fairly intriguing for a later pick . Stidham looked ok during limited action. No one shook and awed but Jones played pretty well.

    • Tim Knight says:

The game was kind of ho-hum early on. I bailed at the half. I also don’t put much stock into all-star games. There is so much more tape on their careers than this one game.

Jackson is intriguing. He’s huge at 6-7 245.

      • New Age says:

I really liked Jackson in the game. He made it very entertaining late and, as you said, it was boring early. He has a huge cannon of an arm and good vision on the field. He really made some nice throws. One of the funniest plays of the game was a ‘sack’ where the DE hit his helmet and Jackson didn’t get knocked down but it unbalanced him he just fell about 7 yards back trying to get away.

  16. stangerx says:

Interesting shirt choice by Cameron Jordan at the pro bowl. Am sure just something he grabbed out of his closet after he woke up late for his flight. 🙂

  17. The Flying Pig says:

My reason to mention 2020 for QBs has nothing to do with the senior bowl

It’s just the prospects are flat out better before they oubeven get into hencombine and bol s anetx…

I’m pretty sure Tua, Fromm and Herbert would all go before any QB in this draft if they were eligible and declared

A month ago I didn’t feel that way
    But when the dust settled
It kind of makes sense to focus up front in this draft early on given how strong the DL, Edge and interior OL class is

Now if they really fall in love with a player like Jones, Haskins or Lock – go for it

We can always draft QBs in 2019 and 2020
I’m just saying, 2020 is a better QB class and that’s pretty obvious and not really debatable IMO

    • Tim Knight says:

Maybe we don’t take a QB 1st rd this year but maybe the 2nd. That doesn’t stop us from drafting one next year though.

Another thought is that the draft is deep in DL/Edge and LB beyond the 1st rd so we could go in another direction in the 1st and get some of them in the 2nd and 3rd. Usually when the draft is thin at a premium position you want to get them before it dries up. The positions that are deep you can wait on.

  18. New Age says:

I’m calling it now but the NFL will make a huge effort to get the Saints in next year. Brees and Payton are talented enough to get there without help but they will get some benefit of the doubt calls next year. Watch someone else get screwed by the refs next year too.

    • stangerx says:

Pretty darn sure there will be some new rules out of it, but never gone on the NFL trying to get refs for this team or the other (including the Pats). But the guys in zebra jerseys are humans too.

  19. son of a son of a shula says:

The funny thing is that we don’t usually have entire rainy days like today and this is also how it was for the Pro Bowl last year as well ( l looked it up).

    • stangerx says:

Cool that you guys have the Pro Bowl though. Makes “I’m going to Disney World” more than just a Brady or Elway thing.

    ——————————————-
I hardly pay attention to the performances at the games because a lot of the players are guarding themselves against injury, its not as good as the practice performances to be honest. Most of the time the guys who shine in practice go on to be good players in the NFL and the senior bowl game stars are hit an miss.
