Stephen Ross’s vision for the Miami Dolphins matches what Dolphins fans should want to see

“This is going to be a young team,” Ross said. “I want to see it grow and at the end of the season I’m sure it’ll be a better team than when it started because there’s going to be a lot of young ballplayers that are going to be having meaningful positions.”

“I want to win all the time, but sometimes you gotta take a little pain,” Ross said. “The fact is we’re a young team, we’re drafting, we’re not signing all these (free agents). It’s all going to be the talent. That’s what it is at the end of the day: finding guys who are motivated, who want to play ball. It’s not all about money; it’s about winning. And that’s what you’re looking for.

So far, Ross, Grier, Flores and the rest of the Dolphins front office have kept good on their promise. We were thrifty in free agency, even to the point where we let our own RT, Ja’Wuan James leave to the Denver Broncos to the tune of a 4 year/$51M deal. That hurt us in the short term and although I wanted to keep James, it’s arguable whether he was really worth that kind of money. I think he’s being very honest and upfront with his plan. For the millionth time, this plan isn’t tanking, but filling spots through the draft and not free agency without a boatload of early picks may not yield a lot of proven NFL starter ready talent, so as we get younger and less experienced, there will be bumps in the road as Ross made so clear.

“These guys who play football, they play to win. That’s why you don’t talk about tanking. These guys are giving their all on the field. You don’t take those kind of hits knowing the team is tanking. But we’ve got to see it getting better, they see themselves betting better and they see something developing here, that we’re building it. That’s what you really want to see this year. The wins will take care of itself.

The draft is getting closer and closer and as per usghe, the QB’s are creeping up and up, closer to the top of the draft. Nothing has changed with these QB’s other than the scripted workouts without and defensive presence where everyone oohs and aahs at their arm strength and accuracy as they stand there with no defender coming at them or covering the wide open receiver they’re throwing to. It’s amazing to me how the same thing plays over and over every year. It’s silly as can be. We all knew that Haskins was a sure fire early 1st RD pick and that because Kliff Kingsbury appears to love Murray that he would be too, but now Lock and Jones are entering top 10 consideration. I shouldn’t be surprised, it happens every year and the need for a quality starting QB seems to increase every year which thrusts at least 4 QB’s into that 1st RD, and usually the first half.

It’s never too late to get things right, and thankfully, it seems that Steve Ross, who has been extremely successful in every business venture he’s entered into except the NFL, has finally seen and decided to pursue the correct course.

“When you first enter the league, this is so different than any other business,” he said. “And I bought a team because I wanted the challenge of building a winner. And I know how I build winners. I start them from scratch. I found the best people and created an environment where people all work together and bring the best out of them and not be like any other organization.

“But football is so different. At first you want to sit back and watch and learn. After last season I said, this isn’t working. And the more we talked about it after the season, I just came to the conclusion we have to change. Doing the same thing and expecting a different result is insanity. And it’s more me finding the right people and having them work together as a team. I really feel good about it.”

To be fair, Ross was pretty convinced that Adam Gase was the guy to change the fortunes of the Dolphins. Good on him for making the change once he felt differently. Now the task falls to Brian Flores and it seems like for all the right reasons he’s the right guy to carry us through. Once again, I caution because I’ve felt this way before. I didn’t love Adam Gase, but I thought for sure our offense could be a top offense at the very least, and that never happened.

So now GM Chris Grier, long time Miami Dolphins employee, has now emerged from the shadows and into the forefront. He’s the architect, and the contractor too, and will now follow Stephen Ross’s plan to build the Dolphins the right way. I believe we have started the process very well, we didn’t overspend in free agency which in and of itself, was a departure from how we always did things here. Now the biggest challenge is acing the draft. We’re not endowed with a lot of picks in this draft, we have one pick in each round except the 6th, the first round being #13, and then we rotate each round until the 6th RD, where we traded our selection to the Titans for their 7th RD pick to complete the Ryan Tannehill trade which also netted us a 2020 4th RD pick. Not a lot of draft capital, but there still may be a trade or two to get us some more. At the moment, we are actively trying to trade DE Robert Quinn and at least 2 teams (Cowboys, Saints) are interested, and even more have entered the fray. It’s also possible Reshad Jones will be traded, but that’s merely my speculation only, nothing firm on that one.

We’re heading in the right direction Dolphins fans, now we have to pass the biggest, most daunting test yet on April 25th-April 27th.

This is why we may not take a QB at 13, we need more picks, why take an intricate part to your rebuild when you are just getting started. i’m sure 1 of the 4 top QBs will be there at 13, it will be interesting to see if we bite.
Trade back…get more picks…put your Franchise QB off till next year, he won’t play this year no matter who you draft.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You can look at it a lot of different ways Rob. If a QB we love falls to us at #13, that’s a perfect scenario. Get your QB, use the rest of the picks to on DL and OL, and whatever else we need. Next year once we trade Quinn we should have around 12 picks so we can do a lot of shopping there. If you have a chance to get the QB you want and he falls to you, can’t pass that up

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Plus, we can also fill in the roster next year with good value FA’s because we will have plenty o’ cap space.

Do you know of any negatives besides not being able to rotate your tires with a staggered wheel and tire setup?

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

when you rotate tires you take the back off and put them on the front and vice versa, if your tires are staggered it would look very odd with wider/higher tires on the front and the small ones on the back….and the back tires may not fit in your front wheel well.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

        i read that wrong sorry.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

the only other negative is the cost, what kind of car? say if it’s a 70s muscle car then you may add value doing it but if it’s just to make the car look like you want then you lose the $$$$, down the road when you dump it you wont get that money back.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

do you have to buy rims? staggered cars have small rims and tires in front and big rims and tires in back, i’m assuming you have to buy rims and tires.

  4. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Good write Mike E. Sure does seem that Ross bought into the rebuild process and may have pulled the trigger on it. Wonder if he’s been looking at teams like the Browns and saying that makes sense. And right now we are scheduled to have 100 mil in cap in 2020. Might go down with some signings, but could go to more with cuts and carryover too.

Only thing am surprised about is that you typed Ross’s name more than 3 times and OD has appeared yet.

  5. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

the thing is; using #13 vs trading back does not seem to go hand in hand with ross’s statements above.

start by acquiring draft picks and build from the trenches out.

you don’t want to lose 2 years on your drafted qbs rookie salary.

there will be a lot of players taken in the 1st round that really suck…and a lot of players taken in the latter rounds who are great.

if you were disciplined in facy you should continue to show that discipline in the draft.

I was surprised he didn’t go back to the Pack. My guess is they wouldn’t offer him enough to make it worth the grind.

  7. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

as far as having 100 mil next year i still think you don’t go on a fa spending spree, you continue to build thru the draft, you only use money to acquire picks, once you have a solid foundation then you sprinkle in some high priced/mentally good fas,
get a team loaded with players who have something to prove first.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Pretty clear they won’t be going FA crazy this season at least, but we’ll see how they use all that cap in the next. And one way to do that if not to back load contracts like say if they re-sign X. You do that and real easy at first, but tougher down the road.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

definitely resign your conerstones such as X & tunsil……just be cautious of outside FAs, they have nothing to prove and no loyalty.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I agree but we can use that money to keep vets that are producing for us

  8. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    speaking of staggered tires…..

i had a friend who had a flat put a smaller tire on one side of his truck in the back, the other back tire was bigger and he was driving around and called me said he had severe rear end issues. the rear end was jumping and gears were stripping because the small tire turned more revolutions than the big tire.

    LOL!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I do want to buy new rims and tires. I have 245/40/19 all around now. I want to put 255/35/20 on the front and 275/30/20 on the back

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Then you wont rotate your tires anymore. Just buy new a bit more often. No big deal really

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

ER – You can rotate them right and left, but yeah, can’t move the back to the front or vice-versa. I was just wondering if there’s any other negatives to doing the staggered set up other than that. I mean the car was set up for uniform tire size and width, so I was wondering if it throws off the suspension geometry and the handling by doing that.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Is it AWD? I wouldn’t think it would matter much the taller tire in back if it’s not powered with the fronts. Just my random thoughts… i’m no expert. LOL

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No, it’s rear wheel drive. The tires would actually be the same height, just different widths. The fronts would be 8.5″ and the rears would be 10″.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I didn’t do the math! LOL
I really dont think there would be any issue.

    ______________________________________

rotating them right to left won’t work as rear tires wear from the middle out and front tires wear from out to middle.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob, not lower profile, in fact the rears would have to be a lower profile because the it’s a wider tire, 10″ compared to 8.5″ The rears would have to be a lower section diameter, like a 30 section compared to a 35 section on the front or else the rear tires would be taller than the fronts. It’s not about saving money, it’s all about the look man. My rims are pretty shot, and I’m pretty sure at least one of them is bent, and if I’m going to replace them, I want to go bigger.

I drive it all winter long, and it’s fine in dry weather and rain, but in even just a little bit of snow or ice, it’s dangerous as all hell, as any rear drive vehicle would be. Traction is where there’s less weight, and it’s harder to “push” a car than it is to “pull” it.

  25. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

ER – FYI – I spoke to a tech at TireRack, I think I’m going to shelve the staggered setup. The rear tires wear out 2x faster than the fronts that way. So a 45,000 mile tire is a 22,500 tire. That blows!!! That’s under normal driving, no burnouts! I’m bummed

I guess so, but I can’t do that. As it is, my Pirelli tires only lasted me about 26,000 miles and I don’t have the staggered setup, I have uniform all around. I can just imagine changing my rears at about 15,000 and the fronts at 25-30,000. I ain’t playin’ dat!

I’m still waiting for the perfect bid on a Mitsu 3000 GT Spider. Again, AWD.

I always wanted a ’99 GTO which was a right hand steering not available in the US (only over seas) It was more bad ass than the 3000GT they sold here in the states. I think it had something to do with the emissions not being able to pass here. The body style was a bit beefier too. It looked fatter than the 3000 and it was AWD. That was one bad ass machine. (my buddy in Cayman had one and he would put a $100 bill on the dash and tell you if you can take it it’s yours. When you would reach for it he would floor it and you could not lean forward to get the bill! )

A newlywed couple arrives in their sumptuous honeymoon suite, and they are both virgins. Brought up very religious neither of them really knows anything about sex. So after about half a painful hour of failed attempts, an idea occurs to the husband. ”OK, honey,” he says, ”this is what we’ll do.You goto one side of the room and ill go to the other. We’ll both get undressed, turn off the lights in the and then we’ll both rush out at each other, slam into the other and it will just happen in the middle of the bedroom.” The wife is a bit unsure about this, but since she doesn’t have any better ideas she agrees.

So, the husband goes one side of the room and the wife goes to the other and they both get undressed. The anticipation is driving the husband mad and as he takes off his clothes he gets an enormous erection. The wife turns off the lights and they both rush into the bedroom towards each other. The room, however is so dark the husband gets disoriented and runs by his wife — dick first into the dresser. He hits the dresser so hard that he passes out from the pain.

The next thing he remembers is waking up in a hospital bed, with a doctor looking down at him. His dick is bent, swollen and throbbing. Concerned about permanent damage, he moans to the doctor, ”Doc, doc, how bad is it?”

”Oh you will be fine in a few days, son, you were the lucky one. We still haven’t gotten your wife off the doorknob.”

with O’Shea being our OC i’d expect to see a similar version of the Pats offense. the pats offense are very disciplined, they don’t mope to the line like our previous regime was doing, it’s not just another play to them,

they are always looking for advantages such as catching players trying to get off the field…quick snaps on third and short to keep the D off balance. all 11 men know what the situation is before they get in the situation and all react in sync accordingly.

they value picking up the first over trying to do too much and have a 3rd and short go to play and stick to it, mostly brady qb sneaking it. we have had alphabet soup in these circumstances.

they have a very elusive go to rec in edelman, i’m wondering if wilson can fill that role.

it will be interesting to see how comparable our offense will be to NE’s

  58. D's avatar D says:

Appearing on Wednesday’s Undisputed, Joel Klatt of Fox Sports said Josh Rosen is “going to get moved.”

Klatt added that the Chargers, Giants and Patriots have emerged as his top suitors and that one of the three has already offered up a second-round pick. The Cardinals are still seeking a first-rounder for Rosen, but Klatt doesn’t see that happening.
    ——————————————————
So, from that, if true, i take it we didn’t want to offer a first, and the Giants, if they offered a second, would be better than ours. I know we were in discussions for him, but my guess we bowed out when we realized shit was too rich for us. Thats good, we do need to set what we are willing to spend and not deviate.

Other things to take from that, if those three are all in the mix, then the Patriots might still be interested in offering their 1st, which essentially is a high second lol. Giants have a high second and extra picks later in the draft so they must be hanging in with a 2nd + some. Chargers are probably the least stil “in it” as i think they dont have as much extra to play with, and their 1st is too high to give up and their second is too low to beat the Giants. My guess is its down to the Giants and Pats.

I think this leads credence to an earlier report that the Giants aret really in love with any of the candidates this year. Not that they wouldnt select one at 6, but i think they would rather use 6 on someone else, and they aren’t sure that anyone they like makes it to their second pick. They are evaluating Rosen kind of like i did when i was thinking it would be a smart move for us to take him.

Of course this is all conjecture but those are conclusion i draw from those reports, and again with the misinformation thats out there, it could be completely off.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

When someone like that has all the info on the suitors….. means the Cards are trying to get the bidding war going. Bet you the team that offered a 2nd is the Pats though. Phins can beat that at least.

I think a lot could hinge on if the Giants take Rosen as to how the 1st lays out. —————————————-
Garopolo was/is a very similar style QB to Brady. Its why i liked him so much coming out of college, that offense was the one we were trying to run at the time as well. Brissett was a similar type player. The Qb’s they have select, other than way back when they took Ryan Mallett, have always been similar in play style and strengths as Brady.

Fitz will sling it if he sees it open. The strong part of Fitz’s game is he reads the defenses good, the bad part of his game is he has never been a strong enough passer, ie had the talent, to get it to them in stride and he gets a lot of 50/50s as a result. If Fitz had had Tanny’s arm, he would have been sick. Tanny has never had problems making the throws, he just doesn’t know how to throw it and he doesn’t read the defense to know who to throw it to.

I think you will get your excitement Mikey, but there are probably going to be a lot of OOOOOOOh’s followed by “oh noes”! lol.

Fitz is a vet bridge QB, not the long term solution. He’s run multiple offenses in his career. He’s smart and has a lot of experience to share with the young QBs. I’m pretty sure our offense is going to have a lot of the same principles as the Pats offense under O’Shea. The same with the defense under Flores and Graham. This season is going to be about implementing those principles and getting the players on the same page as we build this team. I wouldn’t be too concerned about the ultimate results this year. This is phase one of the rebuild.

    • D's avatar D says:

You want to see see results, just phase one results to go with the phase one changes. To me thats just seeing the team go from loking like its a ship left to the currents to one with a rudder and someone at the helm.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, a lot of this season is going to be about how Flores wants his team to play. Who fits and who doesn’t. There will be another wave of changes next year.

  66. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

  67. Randy's avatar Randy says:

My take simply was that I don’t see us running a NE offense. It doesn’t fit Fitz’ strengths. I do think they try to run a more disciplined…and maybe a more basic offense. I think we’ll see a more serious commitment to running the ball. Gase had no idea how to use the running game….and no commitment to it. Fitz is good at getting the ball down the field. Don’t be surprised if he makes Parker look much better than Tanny did.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Part of what the Pats do is modify their systems to the talent they have. It’s not even the same week to week. The term “multiple” is so players can adjust week to week based on opponent and also within the game. We might run the ball 35 times and pass 25 times one week then flip it the next week. We might run more 3-4 type schemes one week with more zone and then more 4-3 and more man the next as an example, not that cut and dried, but you get the idea. That’s what the learning curve is going to be mostly about this year. Learning the concepts, executing them and going through the ups and downs.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And a run game makes sense for a rebuilding team. Plus they did bring in all those TEs.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Flores has made it clear he wants to be a physical and disciplined team. People tend to think of the Pats as a high flying passing team when in reality they are more physical than people think on both sides of the ball. They can be a very physical run team some weeks and on defense you don’t make the team if you can’t tackle. Even years when the Pats aren’t overly talented, those principles are still there. We’re just getting started with all of that.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Just getting started is the key though. Don’t expect us to be the Pats on opening day. Gonna take time for the players to adjust and to even get the right players in. Plus the Pats have always been so deep…. they could change up looks and bring in players who were subs but would be starters on other teams. And we don’t even know if Flores is gonna bring the whole Pats package to us or has something else in mind.

  68. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, think multiple with a focus on the talent we have in all phases. The idea is not trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Or trying to be too cute and super genius. Its football, line up and go.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Tim — don’t know what they will do. Trying to mimic the Pats is the best guess give where Flores came from, but then the Pats model has been out there for a couple decades and the Pats are still the ones going to the SB. Plus can only play the cards in your hand.

      • D's avatar D says:

Im just saying that the guy mentioned with the fastest DL time was Sweat man lol. Im not trying to compare the two or take anything from Oliver. They are both impressive. Stil 6’6 260+ 4.49 combine timed, imo, still beats 6’2 280+ 4.71 at pro day.

  72. D's avatar D says:

Randy, Fitz can run that kind of offense. He definitely is more of a take a shot, deep passer, but he also is a guy who has played in a lot of systems and just as easily could play in the one they want to run if its a NE style system. Look at the other people they looked into. TeddyB, Tyrod Taylor, RG3, those are all quick to intermediate quick hit QB’s, i think we will run something close to NE’s system, but obviously not exactly that system since we wouldn’t want to copy ourselves and therefore make ourselves predictable for a team we are playing twice and trying to unseat as the champs of the AFC East.

  73. D's avatar D says:

BTW, the 25 straight completions spanned two games, which i personally think should make the record invalid.
