3 weeks away, what are we doing?

Whatever we do with our 1st pick, I don’t think anyone here should be surprised. I think we can go a multitude of directions. By that, I mean we can stay put at #13 and select whomever we believe is the best player , we could move up and take a player (read QB), or we might even trade back and collect more draft capital. I really have no idea what we’re doing and I definitely don’t have a strong feeling about any particular player that we’re interested in. I’m not always right about who we’re taking, but I usually have a pretty good hunch, even if it’s wrong.

I think many of you that believe we will just be going whole hog on the DL, both DE and DT, and also staying in the trenches with numerous OL. I think you guys are all overlooking the fact that we need a QB. I know we’re supposed to be all in on Tua, but I don’t buy it. We need to upgrade the QB position with some young talent for the future. Fitz is a placeholder, and right now we have Luke Falk and Jake Rudock. I feel very strongly that we are taking a QB in this draft, and it will be no later than RD 3, and very possibly RD 1. Now which QB that is, I really have no idea. I don’t think Haskins is going to make to #13 and I have no reason to believe we’re in love with him enough to trade up to get him. We very well may be, and if we are, GO GET HIM! If there’s one thing we’ve seen here since Dan the man departed in 1999 is that we’ve yet to replace him with the right QB, and thus have been 144-160 AM (After Marino).

It’s definitely not all on the QB, but when you have the right QB, you have the most important player on the field locked up. You build around that. No DE, DT, OT, OG, OC, LB, S, CB, RB, TE, K, P or LS can make that impact. You gotta have the QB, and we don’t have one. It’s time to remedy that. Take one this year, and much like the Cardinals, if you’re not sure about that guy, take another one next year, but find that guy! Having Fitz means if we do take a QB, even in RD 1, that we don’t have to rush them into service immediately. If at some point during the year the QB is ready to go in, then maybe we’ll get a peek at what is to come, but it’s not a necessity. It would also give us a jump start for next year because the QB will know the system having been here a year, even if he doesn’t play. That will make the transition next year much easier.

It’s gonna happen folks, we’re taking a QB whether you want us to or not! Get used to the idea, because it’s happening this draft. Or at least it should.

not sure why some think our 1st pick will be on the DL. isn’t our OL in dire straights? we have no LG..and we have Davis playing tackle. didn’t davis get hosed @ cincy last year playing tackle?

  4. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I could see us taking a QB, or not??????

I wouldn’t do it because I see no clear can’t miss starter in the bunch!

But the team may see it different??

Give me some meat and taters! Leave desert for later!!!!!

  5. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

maybe we take Jonah Williams @13???

  6. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I still don’t understand letting James walk?

The odds of getting 4 starters out of a draft are not good!
We need at least 3 starters – DE, OT, OG
So in the best DT draft in years you just pigeonholed yourself into not drafting one?????

Then you want a QB too??????

We’ll see? But I see way to many starter holes!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I wasn’t thrilled with that either, but we do know that NE always valued OL differently. They usually have a bunch of no names, and when they become a name, they let them walk when it’s time to get paid.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i think we are not ready to compete and won’t be for at least 3 years, he’ll be 30, do you pay this guy big $$ now or do you let him walk and get that 3rd rnd comp pick?

      • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I’d have given him short term high pay contract for 1 or 2 years.

If you want a QB you better not break him right out of the box!

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i’m sure they considered paying him but it would appear Denver had the better offer.

  7. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

it depends on what they think of Ruddock and Falk, apparently after signing fitz they don’t think either could man the starting position so who’s the back-up? they could take one in the mid to late rounds to battle for the back-up.

if Haskins is gone the only guy i would see them taking at 13 if indeed they take a qb then would be Lock. if
lock is gone as well that will be 3 overvalued QBs taken before 13 which would mean a stud would drop to us at 13. so either way it’s a win-win.

3rd round or later with the QB’s available. I hope we leave one sitting there at 13 and trade back for more picks. FINALLY fix the O-freakiin-line. We need so many pieces on Defense and O-line that is where they should focus. Throw a 3rd for Grier and let him complete with Falk and the other guy, but STOCK UP on the holes we have.

  11. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I had Montez Sweet sitting there right under Taylor when my pick came up. Taylor was the higher rated player so I picked him. Messed up the rest of my draft because there was a run on Edge and I missed out on all the quality.

  16. Randy's avatar Randy says:

If we are rebuilding, then we have, letโ€™s say, 3 drafts to build a roster. Donโ€™t get all wrapped up in what this draft brings. You arenโ€™t gonna get everything you want in one year anyway.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Agreed.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

that is the truth in general for ALL teams. I forget which coach said it. (May have been Flores, but I’m not sure) He said something along the lines of “with free agency today ALL teams are rebuilding. It is a constant process that you need to replace players.”

with only 7 picks (in general) per team each year and the average NFL career being 3 years you can NEVER fill every slot with draft picks. (It would take more than 7 years of drafts just to fill out the 53)

Rock – That’s true – We could have the first lesbian HOF QB. Wouldn’t that be sumpin’?

  19. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Well there’s that!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not surprised and it justifies us releasing him. I wonder if we get $2M back in dead cap space for his release being that he retired or was that guaranteed bonus money already paid?

  20. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  21. D's avatar D says:

For those of you so convinced we wont take a QB in the first, why have we brought in not one, but all of the top guy for private visits? Why did we spend extra time with Murray at his pro-day?

You cant seriously think this is all for show. Despite how we, or i should say some of us, may feel about the QB’sin this draft, there are people paid to make these decisions that dont agree with us. Seriously, do you think all 32 teams are run by morons? If these guys weren’t worth it, they wouldn’t get selected in the first, but im willing to be ya, at least 4 of them likely will.

Im not saying we should, or will take a QB in the first but i think there is more than just a little chance we will/would. We will see in a little while, because we dont know even if it will be an option, but there are QB in this draft that they feel good enough about to take at 13 despite how we feel about it.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not sure who the people are who are “so convinced” we won’t take a QB in the 1st, but many of us have made points about how that might not happen. It depends on how the draft rolls.

I think it is due diligence. They have to do their own evaluations and go through the process regardless of the noise out there. I’m sure the scouting departments are ignoring the noise and going through their processes to see if the players or worth a shot.

but to your other question, are teams run by morons? YES, YES THEY ARE!

Every season BAD QB’s get pushed up the board by panic from teams. I posted weeks ago a list of 1st round QB’s in the last 15 years and over 75% were failures / busts. (I.e the teams were looking for their franchise guy again within 2-3 years) that is a terrible success rate but teams keep doing it.

Whomever takes most of these guys in the first will be sorry in a few years when they are using another first to pick another guy.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That goes for every position though which is why they say the draft is a crap shoot. You can only draft from the available pool of prospects each year. You can always say we need a QB and an Edge guy etc., but will you have the opportunity to land the ones you really covet?

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

But I’m not the guy to say they will be a bust. That is why they do the visits and due diligence. They still get it wrong more often than not, but that’s they do it.

We all know WHY they take the gamble. Their jobs are on the line and THEY only have 3 years on average to be successful or they are gone.

  24. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Tim, it may just be my jaded perception, but it seems that when ever we have a “bid need” it is a “poor year” of depth at that position for the draft.

    Probably just my perception…..

  25. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Zach Sterup is the only OT on the roster not named Tunsil. I am willing to bet $$$ that we will be taking a OT in the first three rounds.

  26. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

BPA should fill one of our biggest needs. I don’t think BPA will be a QB.

  27. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Jesse Davis, Isaac Asiata and Chris Reed are our only OG’s

We will be drafting one of these too!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We also have last year’s UDFA Connor Hilland who can play G/C. There’s been some talk about possibly kicking Jesse Davis out to RT. That won’t be decided until TC though once we know what we have on the roster.

  28. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

we have such a dearth of talent on this team, especially now after the purge of older players that we don’t need to “tank” we will suck organically.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Too early to tell. I don’t expect a winning season but it’s too early to know if we’re a 1-2 win team or a 7-8 win team or anything in between.

  29. D's avatar D says:

I think the discussion for me is just taking on a point where its too much energy to discuss it. Its not our decision anyways, and we dont know, even though we may think we do, what is a good prospect and what isnt. I’m not saying i think we take a QB and im not saying we dont, it just really makes me wonder how we have gotten to the point where we sit here and go, “none of the qb’s this year are good enough to take in the first” when its pretty obvious multiple will. Oh our team is run by morons if they select people “I” dont think are good… when they have made a career out of this and we aren’t even really dedicated novices. Crazy talk. Seriously.

    • D's avatar D says:

BPA Best Person Available…..determined by a big board of prospects, created by the people doing the draft, not the people on this board. Meant to add the most talent to the team and not based upon need (theoretically since we also dont have an idea how they come to their personally rankings of the players) So BPA could just as easily be a QB when we pick as it could a DE, DT S, WR K, P, who knows…again, we aren’t the ones that set up the board, we just think we are lol.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

QB’s get a bump in value or grade because of how important they are. If you have a chance to get the best QB in the draft or the best DT, and the QB you like has a 6.5 grade and the DT has a 6.8 grade, you’ll probably take the QB if you really like him

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Of course you have to have a need for the QB too, but that’s basically understood here (hopefully)

      • D's avatar D says:

Part of it is just that i think Mike, some dont. The mythical 2020 unicorn fairy will ride by and shit us out the perfect prospect who slides in on a rainbow clad in glimmering diamonds and pure white fabric. Of course we cant even guarantee that guy will be available to us or that he wont have surgically repaired robot knees or elbows that bend in the wrong direction by that time, but 2020, will fix everything.

  30. D's avatar D says:

Btw Davis did suck in the Cincy game, towards the end after the OL kind of destabilized. He held up a pretty long time against one of the best DT’s in the game though, for the majority of the game. McCoy is a beast, i think as a bad game example, i can give Davis a pass on that one.

  31. D's avatar D says:

Its the one thing i wish i knew, and probably why we dont know (because of how useful it would be in figuring out another teams draft strategy) is just how they evaluate and come up with their metrics to build the board. Id also really like to know how the board is built, purely linear, linear and horizontal, by position, with positional need adjustments, etc. Those would all be awesome to know even if i had to sign a confidentiality agreement, thats kind of a bucket list item is to finally once and for all know some of those answers. Think of how much people get involved with draft, and yet no one really has ever said to or shown to have the knowledge of how a team does their boards. thats a killer ass secret being kept from us lol.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That would be a huge revelation for sure. I’d love to see it as well

    • I’ve seen some pictures of the Cowboys board but they have multiple whiteboards that go from floor to ceiling that slide in tracks with different types of info on each and you can’t see all of them.

One thing I can imagine is they keep hard copies of everything for future reference, including their evaluations, what rd players were taken in, their draft grades, etc so they can evaluate their own process and make sure they’re going about it correctly.

  32. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Of course, BPA is based on the teams board. Who would trust anyone on this blog. Armchair GMs?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I would trust a bunch of people here over Mike T. I was never a fan of his.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I will give you that, but if this was your job and you think you’re good at it (and others on this board think they are too) then why aren’t you doing it? Put your money where you’re mouth is. Serious bs. It’s easy to be a critic/fan.

I guess….but then we only have two guards on the roster….

Connor Hilland is a G/C on the team so that makes 4 guards. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • D's avatar D says:

There will be cuts after the draft. There are some of the players that were on the AAF teams, there will be some UDFA’s there might be trades, there are tons of ways to fill the roster out. Its going to happen dude. We are starting the rebuild not starting and finishing it in the same year.

  34. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LOL @ D – I hear that. If we like Haskins and he’s still there at 8, go get him. I don’t think he gets by DEN & CIN, but if he gets there and we don’t move, then maybe we weren’t high on him after all

    • D's avatar D says:

Thats the only thing i think is different this year. I dont think that any of the QB’s inspire trade up to get. I didn’t think they did last year either, but stay put at 13 and select, sure there are multiple guys who fit that thought.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think that’s us talking, but one is going #1, and then another probably within the next 10 picks, so it’s hard to say they’re not worth it

  35. D's avatar D says:

This will be a multiple year build, i just hope we come away with talent added to this team and hopfully at least one person on at least one side of the ball we can build around. It would be very nice if we got one on each side, but im gonna try to be happy with one lol. Baby steps, and then next year, when we have more picks we can to the opposite side and add depth on both.

  36. D's avatar D says:

Incidentally, 2020 should be a loaded OT draft. If we can make it through this year with at least one QB alive, we should be able to finish out our OL in that draft.

There will be cuts after the draft

No argument. I am just pointing out that our Oline is a huge position of need. Each reply above says, basically, “This BACKUP plays two positions so…” Yeah we only have two OT’s one has never been a starter, but we have a G that has played that position poorly too… Yeah we only have three guards on the roster, one that has never played a snap in the NFL but our practice squad back up center (of only two) can play guard too…(maybe?)

We have a terrible dearth of talent on the Oline. We MUST find a starting RT, a starting LG, a starting or backup C and a starting caliber RG. from the 9 players on the roster, draft picks and FA’s. I know they will “find bodies” but we need players.

or we will wind up with Colonblow or this guy

    • I think we can get at least one starter, if not two, on the offensive line in this draft and a couple solid backups from the udfa pool. However, I think we’re definitely going to bring in at least one more vet, whether it be just for depth or otherwise, once the draft is over and/or cuts are made.

  39. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, much of what you’ve been saying is why I don’t get into I these prospects but we better not draft these guys or I’ll be pissed. We have no idea what the plan is or who they like. That’s why I’ve said many times I’m just gonna go for the ride and see how this all goes down.

  40. we’re hosting WVU OT Yodny Cajuste on a visit. Probably going 2nd rd and he’s pretty solid. If we were to land him we probably have our starting RT. If you’re a fan of LJ Collier watch the WVU/TCU game and watch how he stones Collier every time. He’s one of those guys that likes to knock defensive lineman to the ground as well. Plays mean.

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah im usually mocking him in the second, usually with a trade back. 2nd seems more right to me for trade back since there is a pretty dense cluster of talent in that round so you wanna take a guy in the second but where in the second really doesn’t matter much, you will get a solid player. He’s definitely ia player i look for an feel comfortable taking around that range.

  41. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Add that to the story of Rodgers saying Mccarthy had the lowest football IQ of any coach he’s had, and that Rodgers was still pissed Mccarthy took Alex Smith over him, whether true or not it’s easy to see why they let him go. You’re not going to get rid of Rodgers and one of them had to get the axe.

  42. Randy's avatar Randy says:

The professionals have more info on players and their own team needs/preferences. That certainly makes evaluating talent a more complete process. But, that doesnโ€™t mean they are better talent evaluators. I absolutely believe there are plenty of fans who are just as good at purely evaluating talent as people who are paid to do it. I can watch an OL for 15 minutes and tell you what their strengths/weaknesses are. It ainโ€™t brain surgery. The pros are wrong a lot….even when they have a ton more info than fans do to make their decisions.

We literally do not have a full team right now.

Instead of cutting to 53, we need to go find a guy to come hang out with us just to make us a legal team!!!

  45. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So McCarthy who was the OC in SF in 2005 decided who the GM and HC would pick #1? That’s like people trying to give all the credit to Jeff Ireland for the Saints recent drafts. LOL

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The story is out there that Mccarthy was a big part of that decision process at the time, and that he is on record preferring Smith over Rodgers.

I don’t know whether it’s true or not, and don’t care enough to research it, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all to find out Rodgers did think that and held it against him. That would be so…Aaron Rodgers

  46. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our plan might be to start building the OL right away so that in 2-3 years they’re more developed and ready to compete at a high level. Most OL take a couple of years coming out of college. That doesn’t mean we take an OL in the 1st rd, but we might double up 2nd and 3rd rd. That’s what I mean by we don’t know how they want to build this team yet.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Let’s see some mid rounders work out for once. Itll be curious to see now with Grier calling the shots.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That would be great to hit on dome mid rounders. Yes I want to see what we do under Grier but even though he’s the head honcho and has final say, he will rely on many people so they’re all on the same page. Marvin Allen and Reggie McKenzie specifically are experienced quality personnel people. Then Flores and the other coaches who coach specific positions will have input. I don’t see Grier as a tyrant GM – he wouldn’t have hired Allen and McKenzie if he lacked confidence in his ability or has thin skin.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Hes calling the shots though. I wonder if he has final veto power…

I said that about ARod and McCarthy several years ago. I quit supporting that team.

Green Bay was my NFC fave team for decades, but I really dislike both Rodgers and McCarthy.

  49. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

ER, the way it was reported is that Grier has final say on all matters of football and he’s the one who reports to Ross. Of course the HC has power too but the reason Flores was hired by Grier was because they share the same vision. They both felt it was a good fit. Soon we’ll start to see what that vision is other than releasing or trading vets with high cap contracts that don’t fit the long term plan. Now we’ll see what kind of players we target. This FA period was lackluster so it didn’t tell us much.

  50. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

To reiterate, you can NOT play a NFL season with 2 RBs.

You canNOT have no starting RT AND no starting LG.

You can NOT stop any team with a rotational 1.5 sack per year DE as you total pass rush package.

  51. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I know we are many months until Game one on the first week of September, but hey, we need to get these guys in here in enough time so they will at least know how to get through I-95 traffic before Game Day.

So are we an expansion team?
are we going to use replacement players?

This has begun to really look like tanking if we are not even going to attempt to fill out the roster.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We have quite a bit of young talent on this team already that seems to get overlooked. We also have quite a few players who can break a big play at any time. We’re just not built to contend for anything big. We’re going to fill out the roster by the time TC rolls around.

  53. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Patrick Mahomes isn’t just an awesome QB but an awesome dude.

  54. markeyh's avatar markeyh says:

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Good to see you markeyh and I agree.

Even though they’re the Pats and they just won the SB once again, they only have 65 players currently on their roster. We have 58. You can carry as many as 90 players on your TC roster but you don’t have to, sometimes it’s 87 or 88. It depends on where you’re looking for more competition and reps. I think we’ll probably get to 90 because I think a new HC wants competition everywhere to prove it to him his staff. Reputation alone isn’t enough.

  58. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The area of this team I’m interested in seeing the most is how the OL is built and will it be more physical than in the past? Especially in the running game. The TE position is going to be very competitive with the additions of Allen and Walford to push Gesicki, Smythe and O’Leary. We currently have enough WRs to field a team and RB lead by Drake and Ballage is solid. I’m really interested in how this offense is built. I think I have a good idea what they want to be on defense.

      Although I don’t know Hanks.
i don’t think we have a place for Renfrow, even though I love the guy.
I am really a big fan of Armstead. Tillery can flat play football.
Jenkins could develop into a near pro bowler.
Tyree is a great one to take a flier on in the late mids.

I could see Winovich as a Mike Hull style bust.

I love Gesicki and Smythe (potentially).
I like Baker, Raekwon, and Kiko.
I like Reshad and TJ and McCain (if he plays slot).
I’m ok with the kicking game.

That’s 16 players. That’s everybody in the NFL who fits our criteria?

Dude, there is no spring break for the FO, this is their time of year. The combine, FA, pro days, interviewing prospects and having one on one meetings and workouts, then the draft and signing UDFAs. The June 1st cuts will be key too.

  62. I can understand people being concerned with Charles Harris being the top DE talent we’ve got on the team but, to be honest, we had Quinn, Wake and Branch and still only had 31 sacks.

Our defensive scheme was pretty vanilla and we just kept hearing excuses as to why they couldn’t blitz or get pressure on the quarterback or do the things we wanted to do because of being behind in the score or whatever.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m not advocating keeping those old guys, but we can’t have NOBODY.

People can’t even list the other 2 DEs on the roster,
and THAT’s IT!!!!! The whole DE room.

I’ll remind you. Jeremiah Valoaga and Jonathan Woodard.
Valoaga isn’t stopping shit. Woodard’s ceiling is like 2 sacks.

  65. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This is a huge year for Charles Harris and his career. I do think the multiple defense will help give him a better shot at success. He’s not big enough to be a pure 4-3 DE and neither was Vernon. I think they’re similar players but not exactly. Harris gets the chance to be a hybrid edge, stunt and blitz guy. We’ll see. If he doesn’t pan out it won’t be because of a lack of character and work ethic – he checks off those boxes. I’m rooting for him. He just turned 24 years old this March and is entering his 3rd NFL season.

I’m sorry, but Charles Harris has BUST written all over him… and I’m not alone in feeling that way. NOT saying he can’t become productive, but he was drafted for his ‘quick-twitch’ and BURST with his first step: it’s not going to get any faster as he ages.

He’d better begin to master other techniques to get at the QB, being his so-called talents haven’t worked out for him thus far.

NICE COLUMN Mike E.—–I agree all signs point to Miami drafting a QB somewhere in the first 3 rounds. IN MY MIND it all comes down to the availability of Haskins after the first 4 picks. If he’s STILL THERE, mIAMI’S GOTTA CONSIDER TRADING WITH THE BUCS and moving up to the #5 spot to grab him. NOW let me make this CLEAR: I AM NOT convinced Haskins is the man for this job. INDEED, the FINS front office might prefer waiting until round 2 and taking Grier out of West Virginia since he quite possibly might STILL be on the board. But THAT’S A BIG RISK, TOO, since there’s a STRONG CHANCE Grier won’t last until Miami’s 2nd pick. –ANY way you slice the pie, the Dolphins are going to need to plug major holes at QB,OL and DL/EDGE in the first 3 rounds.
    ——————————–
HOW DID we get to this point? Ross’s gross mismanagement of this franchise is the #1 reason. Last year’s team gave up a franchise record 6,257 yards which is THE WORST IN FRANCHISE HISTORY!! They also were outgained by 1,619 yards, which is also THE WORST IN FRANCHISE HISTORY!! ROSS has surrounded himself with a cadre of FOOTBALL INCOMPETENTS, and the fan base has to put up it for at least one more season. I have little hope that this team WILL EVER be a legitimate Super Bowl contender as long as Ross is calling the shots.

TOO BAD WE CAN’T DRAFT A NEW OWNER.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You really dislike the man (Ross) and overlook football performance to focus on the owner that you obviously dislike. Job Robbie was one of the cheapest owners there was during his reign. Do you accept that remark, because it’s true, or is it something else?

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

SO TIM, HOW MANY perfect seasons, Super Bowl victories and divisional titles did Ross produce, compared to Robbie? Ross is much, much, richer than Joe Robbie EVER WAS yet Robbie selected the right head coach, the right GM’s and produced a far better product, on average, than Ross ever has! I think YOU are the one who is prejudiced, NOT ME! The facts speak for themselves. TO WIT: Robbie was, by far, a much more successful owner than Ross. I know that REALLY EATS AT THOSE WHO DON’T AGREE WITH ME, but the facts are the facts, football wise, tell the truth.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

KRISHNA: IF you believe TBaum or Ireland were anything other than incompetent fools when they were the GM’s of Miami I’d invite you to look at their records a little more closely. HELL YES I believe most NFL GM’s during those years were FAR BETTER than these two fools who were selected by an owner with little proven football sense. Ross is statistically (W-L record) the worst owner in Dolphins history by quite a margin.
      THAT’s NOT AN OPINION. –It’s a FACT!!

  72. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Possibly, Iโ€™m not real clear on how weโ€™ll be running our defense yet, so itโ€™s hard to envision how theyโ€™ll use him. Putting more on his plate may be the last thing they wanna do.

  77. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Krishna,
I hear ya. I think things like being a doctor are a bit different. That requires a high level of actual training and education. Football just ainโ€™t brain surgery! If a guy knows what they are looking for, do they need to be trained in how to do it? If youโ€™ve played football for years, is it a stretch to imagine you may be able to evaluate others who do it…even if you arenโ€™t paid to do it?
    ***
Iโ€™ve said this before. If youโ€™re an athlete, you are automatically evaluating talent because you do it when you compete. You evaluate yourself, and you evaluate your competition. Is that training? Is that experience gaining a skill? Do I need someone to pay me before I can tell when someone is good at something or not? Sure, training and experience can help, but there are lots of ways to get it. Some GMs are good at it. Some not so much.
    ***
And I understand this is just a discussion and there is always room for disagreement. No offense meant one way or another. ๐Ÿ‘

    I always enjoy your commentary.
I even love your posting name.

But this blog is for the pleasure of a bunch of extreme fans to get intricately involved in their favorite team.
    That’s all.
When we criticize GMs, we are just enjoying ourselves. This is something we do as a hobby if you will, and we all have a love for studying football strategy and team building methods.

We have been cursed for a number of years by having to endure crummy to mediocre teams.

It bothers the competitor in us to have to sit idly by while our favorite team is built in substandard ways. So we use our various expertise to generate what-if scenarios about how to do that better.

If we were having more success on the field, we would probably not be trying to tell the GMs how to have more success on the field.

As for your medical example, i sincerely hope your wife did achieve greater comfort in her health challenge. I applaud you for taking matters in your own hands and assisting the medical professionals in their work. I think everyone needs to do that. We should all become as informed and involved in our own health care as we possibly can be. Your wife is lucky to have such a caring and intelligent husband. You two as a team showed great courage to fight back against the illness.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s an average of all players involved. Good or great players hang around longer than that. That stat is so arbitrary. A guy like Jesse Davis in his 5th season is the perfect example of that. He’s not all-pro or pro bowl but serviceable. Do you think every other team is loaded on the OL with that? LOL

Maybe 7-8 teams are feeling pretty good. At the end of the day it comes down to trench play, QB and overall defense. Unless you have no playmakers, you’re limited regardless. We actually have quite a few playmakers. Tanking? Don’t be silly. The NFL is not the NBA.

  80. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I value you’re opinion especially when it comes to “lines”. But, then from OUR vantage point it’s still just an opinion.

As a CPA, I will call out another CPA, as a DC, I will call out other chiropractors, as a once upon time athlete, I know when someone throws a football/ baseball like a “girl” or swings a golf club like a hack.

Hopefully, Grier stakes his place on this organization as a homegrown. Wouldn’t that be awesome?

    And, we all have opinions.

You can do a lot of things to improve your team, get a lot of good players, but the truth is you haven’t arrived until you get your QB. We need to get ours. We have to at least try this year, and if necessary, try again next year. I’m not saying the Jets are winning anything, but if Darnold is legit they’re a lot closer than we are, same goes for the Bills with Allen. Lots of picks means the opportunity to get lots of good players. If we can start hitting of later round talent like we did with R. Jones, we have a solid chance of changing things around. Coverage – Has good awareness picking up routes to his zone and gets the proper depth in his drops. Experience at safety is evident. Fluid mobility allows him to read the backfield and work into throwing lanes. Has the athletic ability needed to carry routes into space vs RBs and TEs.

Tackling – There are positive reps where he wraps us, aims low and brings his feet through contact but they are inconsistent. Has issues coming to balance and frequently under/over pursues. Must take cleaner angles to the football. Has his share of whiffs. Some egregious arm tackle attempts.

Blocks – Has difficulty sifting through traffic in pursuit of the ball. Gets stuck on blocks with minimal technique to disengage. Gets rooted out of gaps by lead blockers. Most of his success defeating blocks is because of his athleticism and ability to slip/undercut blocks.

Physicality – Not afraid to exchange power but doesn’t always come out on top. Will take on blocks but lacks the power the stack and shed. Contact balance as a tackler is lacking and he will get taken for a ride.

Motor – High urgency football player that relentlessly pursues the football. Flies downhill when asked to run blitz or rush through a gap. Will cover ground and work hard to get to the football.

Processing – Tape is littered with misreads and running himself out of plays. Transitioned from safety to linebacker as a senior and he’s still acclimating to the position. Always takes the cheese on misdirection and play fakes. Commits quickly but often incorrectly.

Range – Has no issues covering distances and chasing down plays from the backside. Can work across the formation and make plays from sideline to sideline. Gets good depth in his drops.

Flexibility – Fluid hips that show up in coverage. Smooth backpedals and lateral movements. Does well to reduce his surface area to slip/undercut blocks. Good change of direction skills and the ability to carry speed through is turns.

Versatility – Offers little appeal outside of weakside linebacker in a 4-3 alignment in a pursuit-style role. Should be able to carve out a role on special teams. His range, size and coverage skills will make him an asset on passing downs.

Most Doctors base their decisions in part off of the patients families advice as an expert in the person they are treating, and the ones that dont are arrogant.

Armchair GM’s are not better than professional GM’s, you might be right and you might be wrong in your evaluation but if im betting on a person being right, even Ireland would get my bet over anyone here, myself included. Thats just fact. We sit on the outside looking in and im not busting on anyone’s evaluation skills here, but seriously do you think you are more right than a NFL GM? Also OD, come on man, you know better. We get you dont like that whole group, Ross, Ireland, etc, but you can feel that they didnt do a good job without thinking that a guy off the streets can do a better job. Thats not a reasonable response, thats fueled with all kind of emotional bias.

That said, we have a new GM and i think we should at least start out with some confidence in his selections and what positions selections they make. If he takes a QB, then they feel like this guy might be it. I think they know that they can miss on that pick or any other for that matter, but if they make the choice, they feel like its the right one. After all its not our jobs on the line by that pick, but it definately could affect their if it bombs. Give them some credit and lets hold of railing on the picks this year until we have a little more evidence to show we shouldnt.

They have done a lot of work with him. I think he is our fallback guy if we dont take a guy in the first. Grier maybe, as they have put some time with him too, but i think they might really like the potential in Jackson. He would be a good guy to bring in as a developmental guy but still keep the intention of drafting a guy in 2020. Just take what the draft gives.

WTF is up with #55 on that play? Did he miss the tackle, take off his helmet and assume the fetal position?

Iโ€™ve met the man who goes by the label OD in person, so I know him to be a fine gentleman who regaled my wife for quite a few minutes at a Fest game with his humor and tales from the 60s.

I have had some time to time fallouts with people on here but i generally feel this way about everyone here. I dont think there are any truly miserable hateful or otherwise despicable people here. We dont all see eye to eye politially, and its a really even mix in that respect, we dont see eye to eye on religion, and again, its a pretty even mix, we arent socially similar, again, pretty good mix, but we are all good people who do try our best to keep our differences on levels above personal. I hope other here recognize this so that when we might choose the wrong word when counter arguing, we dont immediately jump to thinking it is because this person or that person is a dirty piece of shit, probably it was just a mistake and we should cut each other slack.

The only other thing i think could really help this who board stay getting along is to just right now acknowledge that im right about 99% of things, and if you could all just agree with me from now one, this board is going to be even better. Thank you for your time.

Maybe heโ€™ll announce an OL as good as he was?

Dolphins legend Richmond Webb will announce Miami’s 2nd round pick https://t.co/QxPky3RN1A

Was able to get three 2nd round picks by trading back twice and still found good quality players.

I AM IN FULL TRADE BACK MODE!

(Murray was on the board still when I traded back and took Ford)

What? LOL you know better than that! There will be emotional reactions immediately! That’s what we do. We are fans (fan is short for fanatic) I suggest you make your self scarce on draft weekend if you don’t want to read the emotional over reactions. ๐Ÿ˜‰
