3 weeks away, what are we doing?

Whatever we do with our 1st pick, I don’t think anyone here should be surprised. I think we can go a multitude of directions. By that, I mean we can stay put at #13 and select whomever we believe is the best player , we could move up and take a player (read QB), or we might even trade back and collect more draft capital. I really have no idea what we’re doing and I definitely don’t have a strong feeling about any particular player that we’re interested in. I’m not always right about who we’re taking, but I usually have a pretty good hunch, even if it’s wrong.

I think many of you that believe we will just be going whole hog on the DL, both DE and DT, and also staying in the trenches with numerous OL. I think you guys are all overlooking the fact that we need a QB. I know we’re supposed to be all in on Tua, but I don’t buy it. We need to upgrade the QB position with some young talent for the future. Fitz is a placeholder, and right now we have Luke Falk and Jake Rudock. I feel very strongly that we are taking a QB in this draft, and it will be no later than RD 3, and very possibly RD 1. Now which QB that is, I really have no idea. I don’t think Haskins is going to make to #13 and I have no reason to believe we’re in love with him enough to trade up to get him. We very well may be, and if we are, GO GET HIM! If there’s one thing we’ve seen here since Dan the man departed in 1999 is that we’ve yet to replace him with the right QB, and thus have been 144-160 AM (After Marino).

It’s definitely not all on the QB, but when you have the right QB, you have the most important player on the field locked up. You build around that. No DE, DT, OT, OG, OC, LB, S, CB, RB, TE, K, P or LS can make that impact. You gotta have the QB, and we don’t have one. It’s time to remedy that. Take one this year, and much like the Cardinals, if you’re not sure about that guy, take another one next year, but find that guy! Having Fitz means if we do take a QB, even in RD 1, that we don’t have to rush them into service immediately. If at some point during the year the QB is ready to go in, then maybe we’ll get a peek at what is to come, but it’s not a necessity. It would also give us a jump start for next year because the QB will know the system having been here a year, even if he doesn’t play. That will make the transition next year much easier.

It’s gonna happen folks, we’re taking a QB whether you want us to or not! Get used to the idea, because it’s happening this draft. Or at least it should.

  1. Some interesting mocks out there.

I found one that suggests Miami trades up to number 2 and selects Bosa

Tell me if you don’t see some similarities to Frank Gore. He is good between the tackles, patient and very good at setting up his blocks. He finishes his runs and loves to punish DB’s. If he is there late, I have to take him!

One free agent RB I would bring in who should be on the cheap side is Alex Collins. He really came on in 2017 then battled foot/knee issues last year. He is an UFA and worth a look.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I liked him coming out. If he has not lost his wheels, I’d try to get him.

I also like Travis Homer a lot late in the draft.

Newage and others, i do not want to WASTE a draft pick on a RB,
but we desperately need 2 more.

If we can get those out of the 10+ good runners in FA, then fine.

  5. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Remeber guys …
I said there is a dilemma between what NAPLESFAN wants
and what I think the FO and coaches want.

So in my long set of previous posts I was trying to use the clues
to figure out what THEY are most likely to do.

  6. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

My guy is RB Darrell Henderson but he will go to early for us to grab a RB. My fav after him is RB Ryquell Armstead but would probably have to nab him by the 5th which still might be to early for a RB unless we trade back for more picks. That is why I like RB Travis Homer who may be there in the 7th.

  7. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I also want to clarify what I think “multiple” means.
Or what I hope it means, since we don’t know yet.

I hope and think with this new HC it means disguising schemes and utilizing many different sets and personnel packages to both confuse the offense during the game and make it more difficult for opposing coaches to game plan the week before.

I hope it does NOT mean having a bunch of utility guys on the OL or anywhere in the Defense who are passable at 3 positions and a star at none, like some of our recent regimes misinterpreted “multiple” as.

And I hope it does NOT mean wasting Gesicki’s speed and leaping ability while trying to rebuild his entire game into being a really fast Right Tackle.

  8. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Well, this is my 1st Phins mock of the year. I usually drop my 1st mock on New Year’s Day, but this year has been very different for so many reasons… namely, we’re starting from scratch with a brand new staff, new official GM now that Tannenbaum is gone, and we don’t really know for certain which direction we’ll be going. Here goes nothing!

M13’s 1st Official Phins Mock Draft for 2019

    R1P13: Jonah Williams, OL, Alabama
R2P16: Jaylon Ferguson, DE, Louisiana Tech
    R3P14: Chase Winovich, DE, Michigan
    R4P14: Tyree Jackson, QB, Buffalo
    R5P13: Michael Deiter, OG, Wisconsin
R7P19: Xavier Turner, RB, Tarleton State
R7P20: Stephen Denmark, CB, Valdosta State

OBVIOUSLY, we can’t address everything in this draft. However, I think this gives us some building blocks for the future on both sides of the trenches. A few notes…

    * I highly doubt Jaylon Ferguson makes it to us @ R2P16, but I’m really hoping he does!

    * It would not surprise me if we outright forego the QB position this year, but Tyree Jackson would be a nice addition.

    * Do NOT discount the small-schoolers Xavier Turner and Stephen Denmark. Both have incredible ceilings.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

RB Xavier Turner Highlights – Tarleton State 5’10” 230 lbs

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Stephen Denmark #10 – 6’4 216 lbs – Valdosta State Senior Defensive back

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      That would be amazing

But I think winovich in the 3rd and Deiter in the 5th is wishful thinking

Both of those guys are 2nd rounders, maybe even early 2nd, in the book of pork

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Thank you for your feedback, Pigster! We’ll see what happens as we’re hoping for the best.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If it happened I would be more excited abiut winovich and deiter than Williams and Ferguson

Not that either Williams or Ferguson warrant criticism – I just have a high opinion of those two particular late rounders

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Dude, nice call!!! I was just looking at possible UDFA RB’s we should bring in and was just looking at Xavier Turner. Scouts were referring to him as a super sleeper.

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Valdosta State played here in Pensacola VS UWF. I should have went to that game. LOL

  9. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    I love draft time

    But I’m ready already

  10. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

MF’s draft above is excellent, but a lot of guys would need to slide whole rounds to get to us as listed in that mock.

And GREAT research on the small schoolers.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Thank you, Naples! Yes, a lot of things would have to move in our direction. Here’s hoping that they do, sir!

  11. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

For those of you who think Michael Deiter will go earlier than the 5th round (you’re probably right), take a look at small-schooler Drew Forbes, OG, Southeast Missouri State. He’d be my replacement as our 5th round pick for Deiter, should Deiter go earlier.

  12. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I think both WI guards are gone by the third….possibly the second…depending on OL runs.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

To bad their center didn’t come out this year

They are doing it right in winsconsin when it comes to OL

  13. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Dalton Risner is a kid I think could be a possible pick. He has really good position flexibility, and we have needs everywhere on the OL. Risner can play C/G/RT.

  14. MF, I’ve seen Jonah Williams mocked to us in a couple drafts.

But there are literally dozens of Offensive lineman that will get selected in the draft, but only a handful of QB,s

I’d go with the QB, because Fitz doesn’t need first round blocking to throw interceptions,
he can Throw picks just fine with lower round OL

This team will never succeed with Fitz at QB,
if we want to win at the NFL level, we need a top QB, and those go very early in the draft

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

This is not a very strong year for QBs, David. And even with that said, I think the top-3 QBs could be gone by the time we select @ R1P13.

      • Agreed it’s not a strong year, and the good ones go early. But we don’t draft strong years, we draft players, and there are some players at QB in the first, that will help us win.
we need one, so we should explore trading up.

If we pick an OL in the first, we won’t win more games. It will help, a little, but first round picks should do more than just help a little,

If we get Drew Lock in here, there is hope for the future, and excitement on the field.

Fans aren’t gonna wanna pay to see some first round OL blocking nicely for Fitzpatrick interceptions, it’s not entertaining

  15. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Naples,

I agree with a lot you’ve said and anyone in the 6th-7th can be any position for me. If BBM, you and others have a RB you really like, I’m all for it. We’ve just drafted SIX RBs since 2011(eight years) in the 2nd-5th rounds. That’s excessive to me. I’d at most draft 2 every 6-7 years. The Saints drafted Ingram in the 1st in 2011 and didn’t use another pick above a 6th until Kamara in 2017. The guys in the Saints backfield this year are Kamara, Murray(6th rounder), and Washington(7th rounder). I like that kind of drafting/FA use. It’s no wonder we have been terrible for decades. Smart teams don’t draft RBs almost every year and they definitely don’t continue to draft them high.

  16. miami super bowl teams in 71,72,73, and 84 had first round franchise signal callers.

1982 was the only time we ever went to a super without a franchise QB, and it showed,

Woodley put on one of the worst performances ever, and who even remembers who was blocking, they couldn’t complete passes either

An OL is basically a big fat low skilled worker, whereas QB takes high intelligence, and much more refined skills, even leadership skills

OL doesn’t have to complete passes,or hand off, just get his fat ass in the way of the rushers, no need to waste a first rounder on OL

Tunsil doesn’t have He ability to win games by himself, oL are needed, but wasting valuable first round picks on OL is a sure fire way to NOT improve the team imo.

    David
I think you’ve left me speechless!

  20. Tunsil never seemed to effect our win Loss record, but Marino sure did

The QB position is way more important than the OL, we have only drafted one QB since 1983 in the first, just ONCE.

We missed on it, but past time to try again.

Our first round punter selections are only slightly behind the first round QB selections.

Maybe Everyone thinks or seems to assume the local pizza delivery boy can play QB, til they put em on the field and find out otherwise

Most successful QB go early in the draft

  21. I think if we draft an OL in the first, it’s tank time, because We don’t need a first round OL.
a first round OL won’t make a difference in the win loss column , versus a second round OL.

But if we picked a franchise QB in the first, and an OL I. The second, we get both of what we need.

Second round QB,s aren’t going to be good enough to put wins, the good ones go very early

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

That’s highly illogical in every aspect, David: draft status means NOTHING. It’s more about the bite in the dog than the bark in the dog.

      3 Tannehill first round

I know the Brady 6th round story, but what year was that draft? Yea, hasn’t happened since

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS for Lightning Fans.
FIRST, the Good News; Lightning spotted Boston a 2-0 lead after one period of today’s regular season finale in Boston. They then proceeded to storm from behind and blow-out the Bruins 6-3 behind THIRD STRING GOALIE Eddie Pasquale!! Along the way, the Bolts got key goals from Stamkos and Kucherov and secured their 62nd victory of the season, tying an all time NFL record set by the Red Wings in the 1995-96 season. Kucherov’s goal was his 41st, thereby joining team mates Braydon Point (45) and Stankos (44 goals) to give Tampa Bay THREE PLAYERS with over 40 goals in the same season. They looked TERRIFIC DURING THE LAST TWO PERIODS!
    —————–
Make that NHL record, not NFL record up the page.)
    —————–
NOW the BAD NEWS: Stud defenseman Victor Hedman is STILL OUT with a concussion and has not skated in over a week. He’s universally regarded as the best defender in the NHL. His absence from the team would be a major blow to their playoff hopes. Also, back-up goal tender Louis Domingue, who played many key games this season, was injured in practice about 2 weeks ago and he didn’t even travel with the team on this four game road trip. Team officials have not even commented on his availability for the playoffs.
    —————-
The Lightning will be hosting the #8 seeded team in the East (probably Columbus) beginning on the 10th of April. Unfortunately, we’ll be in northern Georgia for a convention and will not see either of their first two playoff games in Amalie Arena. If Hedman recovers and is ready to go, I’d look for the Bolts to win this series in 5 or 6 games. But, if he’s out, this very well could be a 7 game series.

All we can do is either draft a potential starter or trade, FA, etc..

If we do not, then Fitz will throw games in the garbage, and why would fans waste their money and time to see some superstar OL blocking for Fitz to pick out his interception targets and tank the season?

Turnovers are costly, we won’t win more than 3-4 games with Fitz at starter, I don’t care who is blocking,

    Ouch

This reminds me of a barefoot person shopping for shoes in a giant shoe store, but can’t find any they like, so they leave barefooted? Lol

The person should find some damn shoes and put em on those stinky feet, lol. Don’t say

I can use my money on bandaids and cream for my sore feet, who needs shoes?

and the rebuilding process of Miami with a backup QB begins.

We only need one, why worry Murray is undersized for the cardinals? That’s their concern, not ours.

We only have to feel confident in the one we select, if Miami can find a guy they believe in, they should or probably will go for it.

You claim You beli be Lock is just another apGabbert, then please explain why the team has met three times with Lock? Why would they repeatedly meet with a guy they feel isn’t their guy?

They have to at least think it’s possible he IS the guy, and they are trying to figure out who and what he is, and how will he fit here

I can’t believe Miami would meet 3 times with Gabbert, they haven’t

There are more. History shows it’s a crapshoot. Yeah, you can list the Mannings, Rivers, Rodgers, etc. but the list of 1st round QB busts is HUGE (in a POTUS voice just for you). LOL

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Also, there are 16 Super Bowl winning QB’s alone who were not drafted in the 1st round. That does not count any of the QB’s not drafted in 1st who at least took their team to the SB but lost.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Good post! I’ve posted about this before not like the list you did here. Of course the 1st rd gives you a better chance to hit on a prospect because they are considered the top guys, and that’s for every position. Because a good QB is so important they get elevated but it doesn’t mean they pan out as we know.

see Cleveland Browns history of #1 QB busts. They haven’t found one since Bernie Kosar but have wasted a ton of 1st round picks.

Hell, Minschew or even Mark Rypien’s son could end up being the best of this QB class. There are that many ???? out there for me on this class.

  41. Most of those are really old names, decades old, hardly a blueprint for 2019″, let’s look at more recent information,
And Fuck potus , his alternative facts are never right, lol but

The biggest question that most fans have is whether or not a quarterback should be drafted in round one or if a suitable option can be found in later rounds. Can those mid-round quarterbacks lead a franchise?

Everyone believes that it is easy and far cheaper to draft a quarterback in round four, five, or six. That is after all where the Patriots found Tom Brady. The fact is that most quarterbacks do not find that kind of success or even half of that success in the NFL.

Since 2001, 47 quarterbacks have drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft. 42 quarterbacks have been taken in that same timeframe in rounds two and three. Finally 122 quarterbacks have been drafted in rounds four through seven. That is a lot of quarterbacks to fill the rosters of 32 teams. Each hoping they find a franchise gem in the process.

So what is the value of a first round pick versus the rest of the draft? For starters there is more failure with first round selections given the lower amount of drafted players compared to the 122 through 4-7. If we are speaking purely player per volume.

In the first rounds since 2001, only 19 quarterbacks are still starting in the NFL. Carson Palmer retired this year and Patrick Mahomes will get his first season of starting duty with Kansas City. This 19 includes Ryan Tannehill.
    .

Of those 19 quarterbacks only 15 are considered franchise quarterbacks or franchise potential. Those 15 include Mahomes who is an unknown and does not include Tannehill given the fact he has not proven enough yet. It also includes Eli Manning, Matt Stafford, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Ben Roethlisberger, Phillip Rivers, Cam Newton, and Aaron Rodgers who are the only legit franchise quarterbacks in the NFL taken in round one currently active. Players like Jared Goff and Carson Wentz are still early questions but look solid.

Those numbers drop considerably when you move to the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the draft. Drew Brees and Russell Wilson are the only two quarterbacks since 2001 who are franchise QB’s. The 49’ers are hoping that Jimmy Garropollo will be a franchise quarterback but that is still early to tell. The same can be said about Derek Carr as well. Tremendous upside but the jury is still out for now.

Players like Nick Foles who just won a Super Bowl, Mike Glennon who will be a free agent for the second year in a row, and Andy Dalton are good QB’s but are they franchise players? Dalton looked like he was heading down that road but he hasn’t taken the next step.

The numbers drop even further when you look at rounds four through seven. Three quarterbacks stand out as mentions. Kirk Cousins taken in the 4th round, Dak Prescott taken in round four, and Tyrod Taylor taken in round six. Taylor is expected to be replaced this year or next.

Miami’s chances of finding a franchise type quarterback will drop outside of round one. In fact it will drop outside of the top 15. Since 2001, only two first round quarterbacks drafted outside of the top 11 have made a lasting impact on the NFL.

If the Dolphins are planning to move on from Tannehill in the next year or two, or, if they are looking to find a quarterback ready to play sooner rather than later in the event of injury or poor play, then the top of the first round is the Dolphins best shot to find that player. Mid-rounds are good to find back-ups. Career back-ups unless you get really lucky.

    Phinphanatic

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

David, just wanted to show, it’s a crapshoot. This class is the biggest crapshoot for QB in a very long time.

      • Yes, it is a crapshoot, but did You notice that the more recent drafts, since 2001 for example, appear to be less of a crapshoot than decades previous?

Brady’s in the sixth just don’t seem to happen anymore
        Scouting is improving

  42. Since 2001, the chances of teams finding a great QB plummet outside the top 15, no amount of Joe Montana stats can change that

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

I guess Nick Foles, Russell Wilson and Drew Brees don’t count either.

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

This year it plummet’s after the 1st pick.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So if we’re not sold on any of the QBs at #13 then what?

If you think they can be a franchise QB take them. You’re not setting yourself back so bad if they don’t pan out taking one at #13. It’s when you go all in and trade a ton of draft capital for one and they don’t pan out that sets you back.

Based on what I’ve read and heard about this QB class from people in the biz is the consensus is lukewarm. We’re gonna find out in a few weeks.

    • There are only a couple or three exceptions, and those guys were second rounds.

There are no more Brady in the sixths, lol.

We all know that if we want one of the best, we have to pick early

Dang we have a tough schedule this year.
At home we have Gase and the Jets, Allen and the Bills, and the pasties* per usghe.
But this year we also have the Ravens, the Bengals, the Chargers, the Eagles, and the Redskins.
That looks like 2-6, if that.
On the road, we have the 3 division losses plus losses at Dallas, Pitt, and Indy
and a near win at Cleveland, plus the victory over the Giants, unless we can’t stop Saquon.
That’s1-7. Unless we can’t stop Saquon.

So with that I predict a 3-win season while praying for the Bengals to be more dysfunctional than we are undermanned, Eli to finally give up the ghost, and Washington to turn to Mark Sanchez off the bench with 3 days’ notice for our game.

  46. MF, just curious bro, would You attend a Dolphins game with Fitzpatrick as the starting QB?

Concerning David’s valid points about needing to take a QB
in the top 15 to be sure to get a good one.

We pick at 13 this year, so if one we like falls to us, David’s Law might indeed be invoked.

And as Tim and others have said, if you just use your one First Round pick on a QB you like, and he doesn’t work out, you have not set your team back years trying to recover from wasting multiple high picks on a bust.

Plus you probably still have a good back-up unless you are idiots and pick JaMarcus Russell or Ryan Leaf or Johnny Manziel.

What is also really bad is when teams reach and elevate guys into the top 15 who did not deserve to be there on talent. Then taking a QB in the top 15 is a much higher risk.and again exacerbated if picks were bundled to trade up and get that guy.

  52. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So do all of you guys think Flores survives no matter how few wins we get, including ZERO?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This season won’t get anyone fired. Ross has accepted it’s not about contending this year or next year. He bought in and gave Grier the green light to build this team in his vision along with Flores. Sports franchises do this all the time when the team they had never got to where they intended and they choose to rebuild for 2-3 years. Not sure why so many people are struggling with this concept. It’s not unprecedented.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m not struggling with the concept, Tim.
I’m wondering what happens if the wheels come off.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not just you and no insult intended. Many in the media and fans are struggling with what a rebuild means.

To me all we need to contend is upgraded trench play and a QB. We can win with the other areas of the team if the young players continue to progress. The Chiefs had the season they had due to the emergence of Mahomes, their offense and pass rush. The rest of their defense stunk. We’re not void of talent everywhere, we’re void of talent in a few areas. This rebuild might not be as painful as people think.

Fitz can move around. He’s not a doofus or a sitting duck back there.

David, I guess you don’t realize that Marino had two first round picks and a 2nd round pick blocking for him in 84

    • I do remember, Richmond Webb, Dwight Stephenson, and Keith Sims blocking for Marino.

I’m not opposed to first round OL, just not this year.

We don’t have a Marino this year, or a starting QB.

If we are rebuilding, we have to fill in players we need , and We need QB more than any other position. I do want OL, in the second or later, right after we select our QB

The problem with Miami is we have more needs than picks, we aren’t going to fill every need.

And yes, we could skip the most important need, and the most important position , to draft OL.in the first, SMH

      I’m just hoping We don’t

  56. Naples, I think if Miami gets zero wins, Flores will not get fired, but he better do something in 2020, or Yea, he for sure would be on the hot seat then.

In effect, he gets a one year hall pass, but even with the hall pass there are some expectations.

What do We want to see in a first year HC?

We want to see detail, discipline, innovation, leadership, getting the players to buy in, that sort of thing.
And if Flores shows that, and gets several wins, I think that is probably a reasonable expectation.

If Flores shows everything we want or need to see, I highly doubt we end up with zero wins.

Zero wins means we aren’t even close to figuring all this rebuilding out, major questions will be raised, and a lot of answers better be there in the next season, or heads will roll yet again.

There’s a lot of fool’s gold perceptions out there with these QBs. There is no Andrew Luck prospect who was considered a future #1 pick the year before he came out of college just like Peyton was.

I want to see last year’s QB class play a 2nd season before anointing them as anything special. Teams have tape on their tendencies now. They have to prove they can overcome that.

      • I posted first rd qb’s from 1990 to 2015 and when you look at this list and the list that was posted above of qb’s taken after the 1st rd there’s always been a lot of fools gold about qb’s; in every draft class.

There’s no such think as a sure thing, although I think that if you take a guy who shows the ability in college and you know how to coach him then you’re ahead of the curve. But, who knows why these guys fail at the next level. Is it the coaching? Is it offensive scheme? Is it lack of talent around them? Is it the lack of a more competitive team?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The sure thing are the guys who always seem to elevate their teams wherever they are. When Luck is healthy you see he has elite ability. You saw the same in Peyton. No QB last year or this year was projected in that class. Know what I mean?

Tua is being touted as that guy for 2020 but he’s had some durability issues. I have a hard time evaluating college talent these days because of how the game is played and the competition level is so skewed. Stats don’t tell the whole story. I think personnel departments have to dig deeper than ever in this era of football.

Andre Ware back in the day lit it up with Houston in college. He couldn’t play at the next level.

      • But that’s just it. There’s more exceptions to the rule than there are those who ARE the rule. Most of the qb’s taken in the 1st rd didn’t work out. Since 1990, 2004 was probably one of the best with Manning, Rivers and Big Ben. 2011, 2012 and 2014 absolutely sucked and so did pretty much all the other years as well.

I bet there were plenty of years, however, where draft pundits thought the qb class was pretty good or “one of the best classes in years”. I guess you just never know until you do.

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wyo, even the Giants 3rd would be over value in a trade from #17 to #13. The value difference is 200 and the Giants 3rd is worth 240. No way they’re giving up a 2nd.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Correction, I didn’t realize the Giants forfeited their 3rd rd pick this year to select CB Sam Beal in the 2018 Supplemental Draft. They have the Browns #95 through the Patriots from the Beckham trade. That pick is valued at 120 so they’d have to give us another pick to trade up from #17 to #13.

  85. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

DID A PARTIAL REVIEW of last year’s draft. ONE of the low lights was taking Gesicki and Smyth with the 2nd and 4th picks. Gesicki had 22 catches and NO touchdowns. Smythe had 6 catches and NO touchdowns.

SOMEONE on this board said (not long after that draft) that he’d rather have Gesicki and Smyth’s projected out put over Jarvis Landry’s. Well, time may yet prove him right, out put wise. But it DIDN’T HAPPEN LAST SEASON. MORE to the point, good ole GRIER is still, I believe, heavily involved in the process of who we draft.

THAT’s VERY typical of Steve Ross.

  86. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

SPEAKING OF LITTLE STEVIE BLUNDER, HERE’S another cumulative look at Ross’s record as majority owner of the Dolphins. From 2009 through 2018, Ross’s teams have won 72 games and lost 89 (including an 18 point playoff loss to the Steelers after the 2016 season. The PREVIOUS OWNERS OF THIS FRANCHISE combined have a 380-271-4 record. That’s 109 games OVER .500!!

IF Ross’s boys have a 5-11 season THIS YEAR, his career record will fall to 77-100, a full 23 games under .500. As incredible as it may sound, the richest owner in Dolphins’ history has the worst record by a mile!!!

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

5-11 is real, real possible. Could be even worse. But no pain no gain guess is the new motto……. and there is some sense to that, including all the cap room we will have next year.

  87. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Far as I could tell Smythe did what he was drafted to do pretty well…. and that was block. Now Gesicki is a different topic. We just have to hope he is gonna bloom for us down the road.

And for think we can assume Grier is heavily involved in the draft process. Might not be watching as much tape as before, but he’s the desk where the buck lands.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There’s going to be competition at TE this year for sure. Dwayne Allen is a solid seasoned vet. Clive Walford has shown flashes in his 4 years in the league though his last two seasons he wasn’t productive. Maybe he can revive his career in Miami. 5th year Nick O’Leary showed some promise last year for us but kind of disappeared later in the season. Then you have the two young bucks in Gesicki and Smythe.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I think we will be seeing more than a few 2 TE sets. And Flores actually might love Gesicki as an “is he a TE or is he not” option.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. Allen will do what he did in NE last year and that’s block a lot. Smythe will be the other TE when we want to go big and run the ball. They’re both capable of slipping out and catching some passes but I think blocking will be their forte.

We all know Gesicki is more pass catcher than inline traditional TE. We’ll see if he improves his overall game. Obviously would like to see him get more targets and be more productive as a receiver. Some of that will be about scheme and some of that will be up to him to force the issue because he’s making plays.

I do like our TE group from a competition standpoint. The best 3 will be active one game day, maybe 4 depending on game plan, and the 5th may not make the team if we keep just 4.

  88. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If this isn’t a great year for a QB, and Haskins falls to us at #13, I’d consider that a gift from above, and it’s not nice to refuse such a gift. I’d take him so fast they’d have 15 minutes to announce and discuss the pick!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve looked into his scouting reports recently and multiple draft pundits have pointed out his warts and some are alarming if they’re right.

He has slow feet, accuracy issues beyond 10 yards. He wasn’t pressured much and had easy safe throws a lot of the time and playmakers to turn short catches into big run after the catch plays and TDs. They don’t seem to have issues with his character, football IQ, size and arm strength. There just isn’t much film on him avoiding pressure and making highly contested throws. A QB has to be able to do that in the NFL because most games are no walk in the park. He’s sounds like a QB who’s going to need quality protection to succeed.

I’m not trying to bash the guy, I’m just sharing information that I’ve now read and heard from multiple sources. So it’s out there.

  89. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I sure wish we bring back the TE in our offense as a weapon. I do miss the good ol days in that respect.

Hope that doesn’t throw a “wet towel” on anyone or their opinions here on the blog.

In fact. I value most here and their football opinions, truly some of brightest football discussions/opinions I read here.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I totally concur with ya here, Krishna. I think our TE room looks really good, and with some up-and-comers in Gesicki and Smythe.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I was pretty excited last year when they were drafted. I think Mike E. smoodged his robe when that happened.

Not sure what you’re issues are mf13ss, but please don’t misquote or mischaracterize my blogging. Thanks. Let’s leave it at that and move on.

You can have your TE if I can get a FB!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We have been looking at FBs in the offseason. That’s what I’m most excited about this offseason under a new staff. Seeing what kind of team they’re trying to be.

  91. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Krishna,

Sorry about the “wet towel” comment directed at ya, as I felt compelled to defend so many on this blog who truly enjoy the hobby of mock drafting and playing armchair GM. I don’t think any of us here truly believe that we’re on the cusp of becoming an NFL GM, seriously.

So many here are quite compassionate about our Phins, that’s all, sir. We’re all good, but ’tis the season of the mock draft! We’re surely going to be reading some passionate viewpoints, as has been the case since the Sun-Sentinel days back with Omar. I hope this finds you in good spirit, man!

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Thank you and just saw this.

Everyone on this blog has an opinion and is passionate about the Dolphins. It’s easy to be a critic/fan and I was throwing a bone to the “experts”. That is all.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It’s all good, my friend. So long as we have passion for our Phins, we’re UNITED! I haven’t any issues with you, Krishna. Thus, there is no axe to be buried. As you were, sir.

  93. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A big part of this 2019 season is going to be this coaching staff seeing what they have and who they believe in moving forward. That’s why we need as much competition as possible in all phases to find those guys and weed out who doesn’t fit.

We’re going to have more firepower to add more talent by this staff in 2020 with a lot of cap and potentially 10 or more draft picks depending on compensatory picks and trades etc. We currently have 9 picks in 2020. 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 6, 7.

  94. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I firmly believe that we’ll be going DL and OL, or OL and DL, back-to-back this Draft (hey, I could be very wrong!). For all I know, Dwayne Haskins could be sitting there for us @ R1P13, and we run to the podium… and I think I might too in that case, but I doubt he’s going to fall to us.

Anyway, I think we will have our answer at DL, if our OL targets go before we pick @ R1P13. But if we do go OL @ R1P13, we’d better (again, JMO) have a good DL prospect @ R2P16.

I offered my first Phins Mock Draft yesterday, with the hopes that DE Jaylon Ferguson will be there for us @ R2P16, but I HIGHLY doubt it. I’m not going to officially amend it (but probably will soon, LOL!), but I think Oshane Ximines, DE, Old Dominion, would be my second choice if Ferguson is already off the board.

I should just do a bloody Draft board, but that’s just so boring to me (and I’m sure others). I’d rather make definitive picks and see what happens. That there is FUN to me! And that’s how we used to roll back in the SS days with Omar.

  95. Randy's avatar Randy says:

At this time of year, why would any reporter assume or think somebody on a team is giving them accurate information…..ever?

  96. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I do think we build the trenches as best we can this year. I think it lays the foundation for the future.

Maybe Haskins if he’s there if the FO and coaches believe in him.

I think a shutdown D always gives you a chance to win games.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      EXACTLY!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree with your last point and always have. If we land some good impact up front on defense we could be a quality defense this season. I like a lot of our young defenders and I think they fit the type of player the new staff would look for.

I said yesterday, upgrading the trenches and QB makes us a contender right away. We’re not void of talent everywhere. We have playmakers on both sides of the ball. We have specific voids.

  97. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Players. Such as that post by Zierlein about Haskins. It could be smoke screen material to try to influence the draft. What team would actually tell a reporter what they are thinking anyway? That would be stupid.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh okay but who’s saying that? My post on Haskins came from about 5 different pundits saying the same things. I get it, that’s kind of what I saw watching him for the first time. The game was pretty easy for him most of the time because OSU was a top team.

I like the kid’s personality and would love a QB like him if he has the ability to be a quality NFL QB. I’m just not sold on him. But I don’t think taking a QB at #13 if he’s close in grade with other available prospects is a mistake because he’s a QB. If there is a guy at another position who is clearly rated higher as a better chance for success I’m taking him.

We have no idea what we’re going to do because we’ve never seen Grier as the top dog at GM with Flores and his staff. This is the excitement we get to have this year because I’m sure most of us think we’re not going to have a winning season. Allen and McKenzie are new personnel people too. We have nothing to draw from to make predictions. LOL

I didn’t read your post on Haskins. I just meant these reports we hear about teams giving people info on players.
