Some of you regulars here have been doing mock drafts for 7 months or so and have probably done hundreds each. Guess what? That day is actually here, so that means no more mock drafts for at least 6 months. What’s more important than that is we will get a glimpse as to how this organization will be run by GM Chris Grier, and the new staff of Head Coach Brian Flores. Unfortunately, the team can’t be rebuilt in just one draft and undoubtedly, some will be frustrated with what they choose to address in this first draft of the rebuild process. Rome wasn’t built in one day and either will our team.
My impression from the regulars here at finsmobunleashed is that the majority of you feel we should and will address the trenches, OL and DL first, and then go on from there. Most of you know me and know that I disagree with that. No position on the field is more important than the QB, and since we don’t have a QB (please don’t tell me that stop gap Ryan Fitzpatrick is our QB), we need to finally get that franchise QB. If I haven’t heard a thousand times “Tank for Tua” I haven’t heard it once. We’re not tanking, it’s a long process taking a team apart and then filling the roster in the guise of the GM and Head Coach together. We Dolphins fans should know this well, we’ve been doing some form of this for the last couple of decades (without success I must say).
You all know I want a QB, and that QB is Dwayne Haskins. Yes, I’m aware he only played 1 year, but I feel that’s overblown. Either the guy has it, or he doesn’t. He understands football concepts. He has above average arm talent, with not only the ability to put NFL pace on the ball but NFL touch as well. Yes, he doesn’t run well (fast), but I want my QB throwing TD’s, not diving for the endzone and getting clobbered like Carson Wentz. I love his delivery, and I give O Rob props for noticing that it’s similar to Dan Marino. Relax . . . The way he squares his shoulders and drives the ball with his hips reminds me of Marino. Maybe because he was throwing to receivers like Duper and Clayton helped him, I’m sure it did, as Parris Campbell, Terry Mclaurin and Johnnie Dixon made up a fearsome group of WR’s.
I know some of you will disagree. We can get the best OL in this draft, and what does that give us? Tunsil is up and coming and becoming one of the better LT’s in football, and say we draft Jawaan Taylor, so now we have a legit set of bookends. Still a huge void at QB. So you’re thinking build up those trenches even more, so we take a DE/LB pass rusher in RD 2, and then a DT in RD 3. Some of you want to window dress your mocks and justify them with a 6th RD QB and say we addressed the QB position. Well, maybe you did, but it’s pretty unlikely.
Next year has at the moment 3 highly touted QB’s that will be in the 2020 NFL Draft. Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert and possible Jake Fromm if he comes out after his Junior season at Georgia. If we draft our QB for the future now (Haskins), and we finish this season in the top 5 for next year’s draft, which is very likely due to the lack of talent here, we could be sitting in a place of high demand come April of 2020. Just imagine Fitz plays most of the season, and then somewhere around game 14 we give Haskins his first game action and after learning behind the veteran Fitz, Haskins acquits himself very nicely and continues to do so for the next 2 games. So now we have our franchise QB ready for 2020, and we’re sitting at #1 – #3 in the 2020 NFL Draft. I see multiple draft picks coming our way, and I mean multiple ones and 2’s. Y’all want to rebuild, THAT’S how you do it!

I know a bunch of you wanted Haskins, but glad to see nobody pissing on the Wilkins pick. He was a very good pick and many of us already thought he was a real possibility. He checks off all the boxes – character, leader, size, quickness, plays well against both the run and pass and he fits our multiple defense. Build the trenches was what they said they wanted to do.
So it seems we were working out a trade with Philly to let them move up to take Willing and we were going to shoot for Simmons at Philly’s spot. Before we sealed the deal we backed out and just decided to take Wilkins instead

Wilkins or Sweat and more picks?
I’ve liked Wilkins all along so I’m happy with him. He’s a really good fit for how we want to play defense. Like I just posted, he checks off all the boxes.
Adding Wilkins to Godchaux. Taylor and Spence gives us a nice rotation of interior DL. The value of Wilkins is he’s a 3 down player. Now we need Edge and some OL. If we don’t trade for Rosen we probably take a QB at some point but it might be exactly the type of guy Mike doesn’t want lol – meaning more backup status than starter unless he surprises and we found a gem.
I think the another way to trade for Rosen that works for both sides is a mid rd pick this year and a conditional pick in 2020. If Rosen has a great camp wins the starting job and goes onto have a very good year, ARZ gets our 2nd rd in 2020. They don’t really have the upper hand at this point. Nobody sees them co-existing.
Wilkins looks to be exactly what Flores wants to build the team with. Smart, very smart, hardworker, and a leader. He should be a stud and huge building block for this new era

Exactly! Just read a tidbit recently that said Flores has a high regard for front 7 players and that’s how we started. They keep following the plan.
I’m fine with the pick, but just watched him play against Texas AM last year and he didnt seem special at DT in the 4-3. Had a sack though from the Suh DT position in a 4-3, played a few snaps at NT and looked good and looked good several snaps at 3-4 DE.
Also watched game tape from the national championship game, he played about the same as he did against AM.
He surely is versatile, plays DT in 4-3 as his main position, and NT, DE in the 3-4, so he’ll be a good addition. Love the pick more, if we dont play much 4 man fronts. He does provide pass rush from anywhere he lines up.
I hope we draft an edge rusher soon to give us more versatility up front, the whole week to week matchup thing we keep hearing about.
We’ve drafted almost an tire starting D the last 4 years, we have some good young talent there.
Next pick OT, then Edge, then G.
Wilkins may never become an elite DL but he’ll always be good and steady and provide other intangibles. Being a 3-down lineman is also huge.

Yeah someone just posted how he got better every year. He’s a 23 year old senior who’s played a lot of game. Not saying he won’t become elite, all-pro, pro bowler just saying at worst he’ll be good and part of the heart and soul of the defense and team. He’s a guy that’s going to fire everyone else up.
Yeah. His at worst should be pretty darn good.

It’s funny this draft like many others always has some shocker picks that defies the majority mock drafts. So as far as who we or any other team picks in the 2nd rd who knows. LOL

I wonder which DE hybrid they go w/ in RD2….De/LB or DE/DT. If available I’d prefer them to go Zach Allen. Very high IQ player who can rush from the DT spot also. He has a Z. Thomas quality to his game where he always knows what’s coming. Might be my favorite player in the draft.

There’s some value for you. I did not think he would fall this far. I thought there would be no way he’d be here for the Dolphins, but he was. He has quick hands, quick feet and can create an inside pass rush. He’s best on the backside in the run game. Not a power guy, but has a great first step and slips blockers. — Daniel Jeremiah
I saw power in his tape, not bulldozer type, but when close to the QB he pushes his man back, instead of taking a side and giving the QB an out.
