Who will be the Miami Dolphins workhorse RB?

We all know Kenyan Drake is a HR hitter, a big play waiting to happen on any and every play. However, is he the proverbial cowbell running back that you can feed the ball to 20+ times a game and control the clock and have long productive drives? To be fair, he hasn’t been a given a huge opportunity to do just that. He was given a small audition, but with future HOF RB Frank Gore at his disposal, Gase chose Gore over Drake to get the slight majority of carries over Drake, and start drives on 1st and 2nd down. With Gore gone, there is no other proven NFL back on the roster.

Ballage showed some nice things last season although in a very small sampling. Ballage had only 36 carries for 191 yards last season and also added 9 catches for 56 yards.Ballage did have one huge run for 75 yards, which makes up almost half of his production, but we shouldn’t punish him by detracting that from his stats. I think Ballage may have some potential, he seems to be a solid receiver out of the backfield, and possibly offers more in the power department over Drake.

Myles Gaskin is probably the closest thing to Frank Gore in this backfield. I’m in no way saying he’s as talented as Gore, but he’s more of the low to the ground bowling ball type that that run either inside the tackles or to the outside. Gaskin had a wonderful, productive career at Washington. His 945 carries i9s actually more than both Drake and Ballage’s college carries combined! His 57 rushing TD’s is also more than Drake and Ballage combined at 57-46. His 5323 yards rushing is almost 1.5X Drake and Ballage combined. So what does this all this mean?

I think we’re going to have a backfield by committee. I don’t think we’re going to have a feature back, and I think if we’re keeping along with the New England way, we will feature a back that best fits our particular game plan that week against a particular defense. If we we’re playing a slow plodding defense we may feature Drake more to exploit their speed. If we’re playing a fast defense we may feature more a power set with double TE sets and a FB and either Ballage or Gaskin getting more carries in a power rushing attack. Just like we will be on defense, we will use personnel on offense to match up better with our opponent that week. The Patriots constantly changed like a chameleon using James White, rookie Sony Michel and RB/FB Rex Burkhead so that each week, their opponent couldn’t nail down a game plan against their offense. It was pretty effective in that regard. It’s like a baseball team trying to gameplan against 3 pitchers in one game, very hard to accomplish.

I like the different skillsets each back brings and as a unit, I think it’s a pretty solid one. This is the final year of Kenyan Drake’s contract so I would imagine he will be hungry for a nice contract next season which will give him some incentive to play his best. Ballage will want to add more of a workload from last season, and Gaskin is really the wild card. He has a lot of miles on those legs, but he might get a fair amount of carries if he can do for the Dolphins what he did for the Washington Huskies. As far as our 4th back, that’s too much up in the air right now to go into depth about it. It will probably be either Kenneth Farrow, Mark Walton, Patrick Laird or possibly even a player on another roster that gets cut once teams cut down to the 53 man roster. No matter what, I’m confident in the 3 we currently have.

GO DOLPHINS!

Going to Wyoming’s Marino vid — Dan Marino in 1984 — 48 touchdown passes, 5,084 passing yards. No other QB had more than 5,000 yards in a season till Drew Brees did it 24 years later….. and he’s an at least almost Dolphin.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

The Man would have 7k plus if he played in this new age

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

His style and abilities would have been picture perfect for the new hands off passing rules. The pass happy offenses too, but then we had one back then already before no one other than Dan Fouts did.

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Are we talking about Marino with his old team, or Marino with the current Dolphins? If you’re talking about our current team, you’d have to temper those expectations just a bit. He’d still be great, but he had a great O-line and great WR’s.

  9. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Think Marino could have a lot of fun playing with Stills, Wilson, Grant, Drake, Geseki and the rest of the crew. Whole lot of speed options, and man did he have that ability to see the open man and then put it into a tight window with both speed and/or touch. OL might be a problem….. but then the about the quickest release ever would be there too.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just think about Flores as HC, it would be pretty similar to what happened with Dan with JJ. JJ wanted so badly to be a well rounded offense, not to have have Marino throwing the ball 50 times a game.

  10. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I think Marino would be just as special with today’s Dolphins. He was a generational talent.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There are only a handful of QBs who truly raise the level of their teams and Dan was one of them.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He was, but it’s harder to try to figure out whether he would be throwing for 5K or 6K yards and how many TD’s with this roster, and not the one he had during his career. Also factor in the HC who will want to have a balanced attack.

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Phelon – While you’re here, was I supposed to be posting those pictures you sent me?

  12. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Flores might want a balanced attack — but then he’s never had Marino either. His arm is far better than Brady’s and Tommy Boy still gets 3-5K every year. Plus he’d have a whole lot more yards if the Pats weren’t playing with the lead so often. With the current roster, Marino might be getting a whole bunch of catch-up yards.

  13. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

    Play to your player’stalents.

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’ll never know what Marino would have done in today’s game. But with the rules the way they are, a coach would be nuts not to build an offense around him. Balance is great for any offense, but it’s hard to handcuff a QB like Marino.

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stills could be today’s version of Duper and Wilson like Clayton. 😉

  16. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Tim, I agree. They would also be top ranked recievers. Sometimes it’s the QB that makes a difference in how good/productive a WR is and if they make the pro bowl. Someone on here would disagree and still insist our WR group is garbage even though they had RT, Os and Moore throwing them the ball.

  17. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Hard to erase knowing his history and what team you root for. But what QB today would you take over Marino if there was some kind of draft on it? And make them all the exact age.

YOUNG STANGER: RE your Marino comments. It was my distinct pleasure to see every one of Marino’s home games during the 1984 season, including the playoffs and the Super Bowl in person.
To say it was beyond mind-boggling would be an understatement. The NFL record for TD passes in a season had been set way back in 1961, I believe, by TWO MEN: Y.A. Tittle threw 36 TD’s for the Giants and, in the AFL, the venerable George Blanda tossed 36 TD’s for the Houston Oilers. Marino broke their records weeks before the end of the season. He and the Marks brothers were unstoppable! It was an unbelievable THRILL to see history in the making!!! And every trip to the Orange Bowl in 1984 was “an event of the highest order!”

he indirectly smears My fathers name with his false prophetic teachings, and drags his name in the mud, this is personal to Me

Dumbasses, but entitled to their opinions and beliefs. If they were preaching their nonsense to each other and inside their property as it seems from the reporting, what right does anyone have to protest them? That’s just looking for trouble. David – Did you read my post? It was more of a general statement than a specific comment on your event. However, reading the articles it would seem the “Baptists” we’re preaching their brand of stupidity to themselves in a legally rented facility, not marching down the street harassing people. Is that not correct? We’re they marching around with signs or something? The fact that the preacher came out of the building to confront protestors indicates not.

Then you have the protestors. If the Baptist’s were holding a service inside of a legally procured facility, why were the protestors there harassing them? Doesn’t matter if they were preaching satanism…that’s their right and harassing them was wrong. All religions have intolerant sects that espouse hatred and violence towards anyone different. From the articles and from your posts, it sounds like there were maybe a handful of the alphabet community there, outside of the building, harassing the congregation. They, nor you, had any business being there. You and they were doing the exact same thing as the Baptist – preaching hate and intolerance. You cannot force acceptance on people. They will believe what they want to believe.

The other part of this is the hyperbolic use of terms like nazi and domestic terrorism. The incident you were involved in had nothing to do with either. Actually you and the protestors came closer to fascism by trying to suppress another groups beliefs than the religious dopes did by preaching their hate to each other. They are, at worst, cultish. And there was no domestic terrorism. Words have meaning and when people throw them around incorrectly, words lose power.

3rd and 1 against Cincy, 3rd quarter, we’re up 17-3 and Gase decides to throw a stupid deep pass to Stills, from that point on we got our asses kicked!

Looking back i’m glad he did that as that was the beginning of the end for Gase.

I do think just the change from Burke will help us not lose winnable games.
In his defense, he was a first time DC thrown into the spot when our previous first time DC left to go fail at Denver. Since Vance sucked, Burke inherited a dysfunctional defense which then lost Suh and Byron Maxwell and suffered lots of serious injuries.
Not that Burke got either help or support from his HC.
Gase completely ignored the defensive schemes and personnel, apparently knows and cares nothing about defense, and frequently didn’t even look at the game while we were on defense, as he was often seen with his head down designing new offense.

    sheesh

  57. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It pisses me off that Gase didn’t saddle the Jest with some nuttickler like Burke, but instead got Greg Williams, a proven DC. F%&^ing douchebag.

It’s funny that after the Lions game last year I said Burke could get fired because he made no adjustments as the Lions ran the ball the same way over and over and they gashed us over and over. It was rumored Gase was going to fire Burke in the offseason but he got fired so it didn’t matter.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Sonny – You would have been proud yesterday. I was able to pitch all 9 innings against the best team in the league, and we beat them 7-6. I hadn’t swung the bat all season, we usually have a DH, but we only had 10 yesterday so everyone has to bat. Chipped in with 2 hits yesterday, one of the them got the comeback rally started in the 9th when I led off with a single. Neither ball was hit particularly hard, just a couple of well placed line drives, one to right center and the other between the 3B and SS to start the 9th. That was a great win! They were undefeated last year, this year they were 6-1, now 6-2.

He should throw more TD’s and more passes downfield than Tannehill, he’ll also likely throw more INT’s, but that doesn’t affect the WR. I think the receivers could be better off, but we’ll see.

  80. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So this article has nothing to do with the Dolphins
    except that
    1) the Patriots did not get the slick young TE they wanted and still have a mess at that position
    and
    2) the video of the TE in action shows him scoring one of his 3 career TDs. The man guarding him is Kiko Alonso, and he looks terrible on the play. And I’m a fan of Kiko’s, but that was the epitome of how he breaks late in coverage. I mean a LB MUST wall off the outside on that play that close in the red zone, because his help is on the inside where the traffic is. The TE just waltzed in, and of course Matt Stafford is not going to miss that throw. Did the DC not account for the TE pre-snap?

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001034027/article/packers-claim-exlions-te-roberts-after-voided-trade

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I heard that this morning. Do you know why he failed his physical? No doubt Kiko struggles in coverage.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The PATRIOTS say he failed his physical and you know they always play the edges of legal on everything, so maybe either they just thought he sucked upon working him out or that he’s being wimpy about a hangnail.

Green Bay immediately grabbed him off waivers, since they only have 3 TEs on their roster, and I think every team these days needs 4 on the 53.

Derrick Morgan is out there as a pass rusher. He’s 30.
Is he an example of what we want to stop doing?
(attempting to reuse retreads as stopgaps)
Or is he still young enough to offer a one-year make it deal?
He had 9 sacks in 2016 and 7.5 in 2017.
Then a terrible lost year last year.
    So he is trending down.
But he’s experienced in multiple formations, quick, a vet, and a good guy (I think)

  83. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Naples – Maybe the Patriots wanted to grab him off waivers but the Pack beat them to it. I hope that’s the case, it makes me feel good. 🙂

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      I know right?
They might’ve been trying to finesse giving up a conditional 7th round pick for him, as it became obvious that Detroit did not want him anymore. That is so cheap.

Remember who the HC is for Detroit now.

But I think NE must wait on a waiver wire guy to clear every single other team.
So Green Bay noticed that NE liked him, and they needed a TE, so they used NE’s scouting and stole their guy.

      Awesome.

That guy on NFL.com that I don’t like (one of several)
    ranked the 8 divisions and

    AFC East was last.

In his write-up, he snidely mentioned that even having the odds-on favorite to win the next Super Bowl could not save the div ranking. He did say maybe the Jets and Bills both improving so much might make it a little harder for the patsies to win it.

He never even mentioned the Dolphins
(although he was forced to list them as having finished 2nd last year)
He only commented that the 3 young QBs, Darnold, Allen, and Rosen, might make the div more interesting as the other 3 teams wait for the patriots to finally show their age.

D, scallop season doesn’t open in PSJ for a few more weeks. The zone Keaton Beach is in is always the earliest to open. We have some guys in who are fair skinned and older than me (I’m 54) so they like to go as early as possible before its gets really hot. Also, when it cools down toward the end of the season (September) it’s harder to find them. Going this time of year, we get our limit in 1-2 hours. Gives us time to drink some brews and fish before we head in.

  93. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Naples, scalloping is really simple and fun. All you need is snorkel, mask, fins and a nylon mesh laundry bag to hold your scallops as you swim around. We go anywhere from 1/4 to 1.5 miles off shore in the gulf but the depth stays relatively the same (about 5ft) depending on the tide. Also, if the winds are from the NE, E or SE and less than 10 mph (which it was this past weekend) the water is almost like glass. No waves but sometimes a light chop so it does not really matter the size of the boat you use. Water is crystal clear as well. It’s not just the scalloping but checking out all the other sea life as well. I had a 2-3 foot jack crevalle come within 4ft of me. We carry 3ft pole spears with us but I wouldn’t try to spear a powerful swimmer like a jack. We mainly carry them incase we come across a flounder. Most of the houses in Keaton Beach are rentals and on canals with docks. The house we rent is this one: http://www.bbpfl.com/Slice-of-Paradise.html
We like this house cause we are on the main canal from the boat ramp (only one for many miles). We are done cleaning scallops and fish, showered up, drinking beer and playing cornhole by 2pm while we get to watch a flotilla of boats and bikini’s coming back in. So many boats are put in there that the flotilla lasts 4-5 hours. LOL
