Player Spotlight : CB Eric Rowe

We have X on one side, that much is a given. The way the Dolphins have chosen to finish the equation is X + R = CB Bliss. It’s actually a big risk. Rowe has been a part time player for the first 4 years of his career. He was drafted in the 2nd RD in 2015 by the Philadelphia Eagles. Rowe played in all 16 games for the Eagles in his rookie year, starting 5. New England was in need of a CB in 2016 and sent a conditional 4th RD pick in 2018, which at best could have turned into a 3rd RD pick if performance measures were met. Why did Philly give up on their guy so quickly, so much so that they had to wait 2 years to get compensation back for him? Very odd.

At the NFL combine, Rowe was a monster. He ran 4.45 at 6’1 205, a 3.97 20 YD shuttle which is super quick for a guy that size, a 6.70 cone drill which shows elite agility and a 39″ vertical which shows elite explosion.. Maybe that’s why Philly took him in the 2nd RD, he Mike Mamula’d them. They pretty much gave up on the guy after one season.

Rowe started only 12 games in 3 seasons for the Patriots and played in 21 games. I’m not saying Eric Rowe can’t be the guy, but so far 2 teams, and make that 2 very solid organizations like the Eagles and Patriots can’t find a way to get this guy to work, it’s a little disconcerting. He has played well in practice and looked good in the preseason so far, but it just shows how poor our quality depth is at CB at the moment after Xavien Howard. Cornell Armstrong, Jalen Davis, Chris Lammons, Cordrea Tankersley and David Rivers. Chris Lammons has flashed some but is anyone here confident that he can handle the pressure of being picked on constantly as teams avoid throwing to the side X is on? That’s a lot to handle.

Some guys develop late, some guys just need the right opportunity to shine. It looks like Rowe is going to be given every opportunity and more to seize the job opposite X so it won’t be for a lack of chances that he doesn’t succeed here. Eric Rowe was a starter at CB in college at Utah. Who was that big Utah CB we had here that everyone loved? Was it Sun Sentinel, er Sean Smith? Smith was a lightning rod. Some hated him, some defended him. My recollection is I was a Sean Smith sympathizer. I thought he was unfairly treated by the haters although he was never a great player for us. He was at the very least a serviceable player for us. Smith started 56 games in 4 seasons for us. Can Rowe give us anything like that? The SS haters will hate this statement, but if Rowe can be as good as Sean Smith, I think we’ve done well.

It says plenty about Rowe that his defensive coach brought him to Miami when he left

Sure 3 teams by his 4th season is a lot
But that would mean more of coaches were dumping him

    Flores didn’t dump Rowe
    He cling to him…lol

  3. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    A Sean Smith reference?

Clever way to spark controversy Mike…lol

  4. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Let me tell you, albeit I like Rowe, if he starts on the other side of Howard

I fully expect him to be a whipping boy for us in time (maybe not right away)

The other CB is always the whipping boy and when the other side is howard, it will probably be worse

People love ripping CBs and they have the toughest job in the nfl
It’s hard to consistently shut down nfl WRs
    Hard?…it’s impossible

    It’s just a thing
    People bash CB #2
    It will happen

But I think Rowe is a really good fit for us – not perfect but probably exactly what we need

Now if only we play McCain at nickel and linkage at safety, I will be whole…lol

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think Rowe is a fair comparison to Smith. Both are bigger corners, played at Utah, and both bounced around from team to team. Granted, Sean Smith had longer stays than Rowe.

Piggy – I don’t overestimate when coaches bring in former players. It’s simply familiarity. Did you think because his former coach brought Colonblow here that it was a good thing? Guys just go with guys they know, for better or for worse, in every team sport.

Its a crazy story, i read it, and i was left not knowing which part was more disturbing to me, the fact there was a botched in-home castration by and unlicensed professional, the fact that this isn’t the first time he has had a botched one, or the fact that he ant the recipient of those botched castrations met on a fetish website for people who either are enthralled with performing, viewing, and/or want to experience the pleasure of one.

  9. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

MIke E — awesome take on Rowe. Know so much more about him than before….. and isn’t he the big Q in the secondary? We have 4 good to great safeties (whether playing slot DB or not) and one stud of a boundary CB.

They brought in the swarm thing….. but even in that two guys line-up in coverage on the outside. My hopes aren’t up on Rowe, but maybe he is at least good enough that one of those guys is not McCain or Minkah like last year. Just need legit NFL starter, even if below average.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Rowe should be able to hold his own, enough that he can cover one on one often enough. For sure he’ll get a lot of safety help.

    Stanger
    Concerning the Fest game.
Ok so my wife and I BOTH had suspicious spots our back which required surgery this summer.
Unfortunately, hers was much worse than mine, as it was a real skin cancer (melanoma), and they were thus, of course, concerned that it had spread to her lymph nodes. Very scary survival rates if that happens.

Mine was just something related to but not “real” skin cancer like hers. No biggie. They dug it out.

Still we both had to go through the biopsies, then the nuclear meds to trace the spread, then the surgery, then more biopsies, and now the rehab.

So I have had to put trips and stuff on hold until she is cleared for such activity.
We’re prohibited not only from physical twisting and exposure to sunlight, both forbidden still,
but even getting over-heated so that the excision sites would not be compromised.

I go to get my external stitches out of my back tomorrow. The ones inside will just get absorbed over 3 months. I’m hoping they let me start back in the gym lifting or at least running as I am already up near 240 and really need some workouts. (It did not lessen my extra large appetite.)

She has a jagged 5-inch scar on her shoulder as well as scars under her arm where they removed 3 nodes, but at next week’s recheck, I hope they at least let her jog and swim.

Anyway, our prognosis is good (as long as it is every time we go back), so I am hereby committing to attending the Fest. Both of us I mean. Barring unforeseen catastrophe, we will enjoy the great fun of Buster’s and the game.

Not sure if she can take the heat of the tailgating, so, sad to say, we might not make that fun event.

Sorry to have left you hanging so long, Stanger, but unless I find out differently soon, we now can say we’ll both be at the game cheering for Miami.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Sorry you’re both going through that. I’m actually going though something very similar. They removed about 9 moles from my arms, back and legs, and had to go deeper on about 5 of them. They had to an excision on one on my lower back and I’m having the stitches out Monday. I feel like they’re taking me apart piece by piece, and there’s still one they want to keep an eye for pigmentation. It gets darker, they’ll probably want to do an excision on that one too. I probably should have had a full body scan a lot earlier, never even thought about it. In the end, very happy that you will both be there!

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Glad working out OK for you. I have a bunch of moles. Something to get checked on my next physical, even if no runs in the family. Should have seen my Dad… and none of them ever turned bad.

Naples — so sorry what you and your lovely have been going through. OD has been with similar. But hope you don’t mind if I smile a bit at how that this a really long story to say “we’re IN.” 🙂

And all the props to you for saying so. And if the heat is too much at the tailgate….. you guys can head in early. Other than some of the big stores no AC, but a whole lot more cooler. Much more than the in the shade outside. And if turns out can’t make don’t worry about it either.

I find myself agreeing with ORob’s math regarding Stills. Maybe it’s a bias based on his politics, but he just isn’t that impressive. He was adequate on bad teams.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He serves a purpose in our offense. He’s the big play guy that somehow manages to get behind DB’s when hey know that’s all he can do well. We need that, he keeps them honest and makes them pay if they try and crowd the box and go one on one with him. He’s never been a #1 guy and you could argue he’s not even a #2. It doesn’t matter. He’s fine, you just don’t overpay a guy like him. We have so many questions at WR, is Wilson healthy, is Grant healthy, will Parker ever be more than he’s been?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I believe with the potential of Geisiki in this offense and also being able to line up Drake outside, Stills could be expendable in a trade. If it came down to cutting him then I’m keeping him. Like Mike E said, he does bring value to the team. If Geisiki is playing like a stud and our WR’s stay healthy but our record is not that great, he could be a mid season trade.

Interesting article. I know we are a very young team, but I didn’t realize that 60 out of our 90 guys are practice squad eligible. WOW

    • this is ridiculous IMO whats up with Flores siding with jay z who isnt a dolphin and never played football, over a WR that is on our team? this is distractions no team needs IMO

football is a team sport, and the coach alienating our players is not conductive to team sports

Flores will learn the hard way, a lesson he should have already learned
Gase alienated his players too, how did that work out?

Flores needs to put a stop to this, otherwise he may give the impression he wants to tank for tua, something i never imagined he would want to do

Jay z and Nas are not part of the team, and not uniting the team either, hopefully Flores realizes this isnt good football, and coaches the team to be committed to the team and to each other.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And to me this looks like good natured ribbing back and forth. It’s one of the things sane people may do to alleviate tension over disagreements. But yeah, hopefully Flores hasn’t lost the team and appear to be tanking for Tua!!! lol

  61. Naples, hopefully everything works out for the best for You and Your wife, best of luck

Mike Happy Birthday , may your day be special

  62. BTW i like Eric Rowe, and I feel he can be a starting CB for us =)

  63. and i have always liked Preston WIliams,

if he didnt get into legal trouble, he should have been a high second rounder IMO

  64. for the folks not liking Stills, consider our top receiver was Amendola and he is gone. first round pick Devante Parker had
    24 receptions
    309 yards
    12.9 YPC
    1 TD
and is now having foot problems

    1 SMH

also Grant and Wilson finished the year on IR, and had stats that were not in the top 50.

so Stills is clearly our top WR, and has done nothing wrong.

if we were to send him packing,
we got Preston Williams , a trio of injured receivers, and maybe a new guy. i sure Fitzpatrick can toss picks with or without Stills, but Rosen will need WR;s

we need Stills and his ability to blow the top of a defense , he is our only deep threat that lines up every week

    Happy B’Day Mike.
Slow down; you are catching up to me.

    LOL @ Catching up.

I was joking around with a bartender that I have known for a long time. (10 years actually) She was busting on me about being old and I told her to watch out because she was catching up with me. She says “that just dumb, it’s impossible”

I said I can prove it. When we met I was 40 and you were 21 so I was almost twice as old as you. Now I am 50 and you are 31. you are almost 2/3rds as old as I am now. You are catching up.

She walked away with a confused look and came back later to argue the point and I busted out the calculator which blew her mind. LOL Silly twit.

The pasties losing Chung is good for us, especially as we play them early before they can get his replacement fully up to speed.

I’m so old i remember “party lines.”
You’d pick up the phone and someone would be talking, and they’d say “we’re on the line.” or something like that, so you would hang up and wait a while and try again.

I remember my dad was so proud that it made us look wealthy when we were one of the first in town to get a 2-family party line when most people shared with 4 or even 6.

  75. for Patrick Chung,,

If you want to hang out, you’ve gotta take her out, cocaine
If you want to get down, get down on the ground, cocaine
She don’t lie, she don’t lie, she don’t lie,
    Cocaine

  76. the league cannot suspend Chung, with or without pay, based on these allegations.

Chung’s alleged misconduct does not fall under the Personal Conduct Policy. The substance-abuse policy covers criminal conduct involving substances of abuse, and the substance-abuse policy contains clear language on what can, and thus can’t, be done to a player who merely faces criminal charges, whether misdemeanor or felony.

First, nothing can be done until the charges are resolved. The league can’t, and won’t, conduct its own investigation and take action independent of the criminal process.

Second, Chung can’t be suspended with pay pending resolution of the charges. It’s simply not available under the substance-abuse policy. The Commissioner-Exempt list applies only to potential Personal Conduct Policy violations involving alleged crimes of violence.

Third, Chung will be subject to NFL discipline only if he ultimately is found responsible for a drug-related offense. This requires a conviction, a guilty plea, a no-contest plea, or entry into a diversion program. If Chung fights the charges and wins exoneration, the league can do nothing.

Unless the wheels of justice move more quickly than they usually do, this case won’t be resolved until at the 2019 season, at the earliest. Thus, the league will do nothing — indeed, the league can do nothing — until the case ends, at the earliest. While this doesn’t prevent the Patriots from making roster decisions in light of the allegations against Chung, it definitely keeps the league from imposing any sort of sanction.

Patrick Chung will face no league punishment, likely for a while

Rock, yeah that’s why on cut day it’s a whirlwind for teams looking to pick up players at positions they need help at. The cuts don’t all happen at the same time though, they come in droves and then teams start signing players then cut some more etc.

Eguavoen says he feels playing in Canada helped him with his game as a LB

He says it’s a 65 yard wide field there and only 53 yards wide here so when they throw a screen he has a lot less ground to cover so he knows he will get there.
