As you all probably know already, the Dolphins made some cuts yesterday, not reporting this, just recapping what’s happened. One of the bigger surprises was cutting DT Akeem Spence who we picked up last year from Detroit for a conditional 2019 7th RD pick. Also somewhat a surprise was cutting safety T.J. McDonald. Not surprising was parting ways with OL Will Holden (Not to be confused with actor William Holden). We also waived OT Jordan Mills who when we first picked him up after Buffalo released him I thought he may be our starting RT this season. The way he performed for us in practice and in the preseason made it clear that wasn’t going to happen. Also waived were LB Chase Allen, and veteran TE Clive Walford.
Now to the big news. The Dolphins met with Jadeveon Clowney yesterday, although Clowney did not deem the Miami Dolphins originally as a potential suitor. He preferred the Seattle Seahawks, but after meeting with Dolphins HC Brian Flores, his opinion may have changed. At the moment, it actually seems as if the Dolphins are the team most likely to land Clowney, but at what price? Keep in mind, the price is two-fold. We have to trade talent to the Texans in exchange for Clowney, and then we have to pay Clowney. He signed a 1 year deal worth just under $16M, but what happens after this season? Therein lies the rub . . .
I had to drive from one office to another yesterday and I had the pleasure of catching some good dialogue between NFL Radio hosts Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller. Pat Kirwan is not the foremost authority on everything NFL, but as a former HC and NFL GM, he’s well respected in NFL circles. Kirwan was very much against the Dolphins acquiring Clowney and made some excellent points. He was saying that Clowney hasn’t been a premier player while playing with J.J. Watt. This reminds me of tha situation the Dolphins had years ago. Flash back to the year 2002 when the Dolphins had Jason Taylor and Adewale Ogunleye. That year, Taylor had 18.5 sacks, Ogunleye chipped in with 9.5 sacks. This is a similar situation, it really is. Clowney having the benefit of possibly the most disruptive defensive player in the game hasn’t ever achieved double digits in sacks. BTW, Ogunleye only achieved double digit sacks once with CHI, and only once (10) in 2005. Granted, Watt hasn’t been able to stay healthy, but I’m loathe to give Clowney a huge contract when he’s never been a game changer. He’s young, he’s only 26, but where’s the beef? Understood he was injured his 1st season in 2014, and maybe had a hangover from that injury in 2015. Where’s the explosive stats after that? 24.5 sacks in 3 seasons. Sure, it’s better than what we have, but is it worthy of trading top talent away and then backing up a Brinks truck and paying him handsomely after too? I wouldn’t do it. 2015 Watt had 17.5 sacks and FIFTY QB hits. Clowney?4.5 sacks, 8 QB hits.
To me this more about getting a name than production, and as Naples mentioned, all too similar to acquiring Ndamukong Suh. I know we need help at DE, I’d rather run with the young guys who have shown some promise than really overpay twice to get Clowney, one in trade compensation and two having to pay some exorbitant contract for him over the next few years. I don’t think he’s worth it. Nothing wrong with kicking the tires, but don’t please don’t make the purchase!

Firstus
I am also in the “Don’t do it! Camp. I think Clooney is good, maybe even above average, but not elite. And yet, Houston is going to want elite compensation for him and he is going to want elite money.
Clowney…apparently autocorrect is a George Clooney fan.
I think if Clowney was coming here it would already be done
This one is more complicated, because of his not signing the tag, giving him some say on where he goes.
you would think if he’s ok with coming here he would have signed the tender already, the thing is he will sign the tender before the season starts even if it means playing with the texans to avoid losing a pay check. the fact that he’s waiting tells me he doesn’t want to be traded here.
Clowney not getting double digit sacks does not disqualify him from elite status. He’s a load, that’s very disruptive.
He may be better against the run, but really he’s an all around player, that puts extreme pressure on an O.
If we can get him for a player like Stills or Drake and a 2nd, I’m all in. If we have to give up too much more, not so much.
What has he done that’s elite? Is he anything even remotely close to Von Miller and Khalil Mack? He doesn’t belong in the same sentence with those guys, and those guys are elite. So yeah, he’s not elite! It’s not like he’s making a ridiculous amount of tackles, INT’s, FF’s, anything. Nothing he’s done has approached elite. J.J. Watt is elite. In Watt’s first 5 years he had 209 QB hits. Clowney? 67. Sorry, nothing to look at. Pass
Stat monger
He’s made the Pro Bowl the last 3 years, you don’t do that without being elite. He’s a beast to block. If we get him by Friday I’m taking our D in FF, if not by Friday I’ll pick up our D if we do get him later. We already were #2 in ints, imagine with his pressure.

Unless you fleece the Texans in a trade, you dont make a move on a guy like Clowney to rent him for 2 years on a rebuilding team. It makes absolutely zero sense. Oh, we got a 3rd round comp pick several years later??? Yeah, that makes all the difference. Lol. Keep our draft picks, grow our salary cap, stay the course and build through the draft. Moves like these are why we are finding new coaches every several years.

No one is talking about renting him for 2 years, it would be a 2 year trial, if we had done that with Suh, he would’ve been gone after 2 years, saving us well over $40M.
Literally several said it.
You’re taking it out of context. What they meant was 2 year trial, rent to own, lease option. Of course you don’t rent him for 2 years with no intention of keeping him longer.
What the Rams did with Suh was a 1 year rental, maybe, but they were shooting for a title. I say maybe, because if Suh had 12 sacks I’d bet he’s there.
But, yes, i agree, you dont make a move on a guy like Clowney to rent him for 2 years on a rebuilding team.
I’m leaving in the don’t do it camp for pragmatic reasons
But I gotta say – the do it camp has me really excited 😈
We have a blue chip LT and a blue chip CB
Adding a blue chip pass rusher would be quite a trio
Hard for me to resist buying one of those jerseys
🐖💨
Just say no! No jerseys for pigs.
Getting Clowney for Drake or Stills changes the direction of the season. It would mean we have a fighting chance to make the playoffs.
Even without, I’m not ruling it out. The players have responded to what Flores is selling. TNT is the law, and no one is above it, not even Flores. I haven’t seen this type of play in preseason before where the level of play/effort has been this high.
I think the combination of TNT, scheme and putting guys in position to succeed is showing. There’s been some guys out of position that played poorly like Mills, and others that just can’t play like Needham and Holden, and the OL that I won’t categorize, but it’s mostly been good.
We may not win a lot of games, but I doubt we’re going to feel like this team is hopeless, like in years past when the run and pass D was atrocious or when we had a statue playing QB.
i’m of the whatever the Flores/Greir camp thinks is a good decision. i just don’t think it will happen and if it does it will be right before the start of the season. i dont think he wants to come here or it would’ve already happened, he’s holding out as long as he can until his paycheck is at risk.

What has he done that’s elite?
_____________
playing with watt may have lessened his stats, he’s a probowl player. i think that the system he will play in may help him in stats, he’s a good run defender and pass rusher, flores and grier must see something of value for them to pursue him. i don’t think the money is a big concern due to the enormous cap situation of 2020. there’s a cap floor as well and we can dump him if he doesn’t perform.
I’m pretty sure the intentions for all of those 2020 draft picks isn’t to stand pat, it’s to have ammo to wheel and deal, it may turn out that way, but its not the plan.
the hold up may be what compensation do you give the texans for clowney?
absolutely no draft picks, maybe stills and drake? we can’t part with any draft picks especially early ones, this team is supposedly way off to compete and giving draft picks for him would be counter productive to rosses plan he laid out after firing gase.
the texans gave osweiler a killer contract and dumped him in 1 year giving up a 2nd to do so, maybe they can be had, maybe they want clowney’s numbers off their books.
I doubt the Texans agree to move him just for mid-tier players
They may not have a choice.
Clowney has 29 sacks in 5 years
I know that’s not a ton
But he sat out most of his rookie year and didn’t record any sacks
And didn’t have a great year 2
He’s got 9 and 9.5 sacks the last 2 years and 21 QB hits each year
He’s producing and he certainly has an elite skill set
The future looks bright for him
I happened to love the player coming out of college
I get the Suh comparisons though
I loved Suh too coming out of college
Steve – Pro Bowl? Really? Popularity contest! Has ever been an All Pro???
You know it’s all about name recognition. He was probably an alternate each and every time anyway.
So you’re saying no one that makes the Pro Bowl deserves it? You may get there on reputation on the 3rd+, but not the first 2.
It’s not about just what he’s done, but the that and how he fits with what we’re trying to do, great scheme fit.
It never says whether he was first team pro bowl or if he was an alternate. I don’t think pro bowl means nearly as much as all pro. He’s just not a big impact player Steve. I think at this point you know what he is, and he hasn’t been the most disruptive player on the field, not even the most disruptive player on his team. In fact, you could put him 3rd behind Watt and Mercilus for a couple of his seasons. The big problem is he will want J.J. Watt money for nowhere near his production. No can do
giving them drake will open a roster spot for either laird…gaskin or walton.
Which I like, but I also like the homerun threat that Drake brings. The last 2 wins vs NE had as much to do with Drake than any other player. You don’t beat them ordinary play.
I’d rather give up a 2nd in 2020 and another in 2021 and keep our players.
we have a bigger stronger drake in ballage
I like Ballage
But Drake is Drake
We are giving up speed that we can’t replace on our roster
It may not hurt us at the end of the day
But right now we are a very speedy offense
I’m a little leary of trading Stills, but for Clowney I’d do it, because of what Clowney brings and our WR depth.
Stills responded against Jax with some intensity that I haven’t seen from him before, if he could only bottle that up and bring it from week to week he’d have a great season.
Here’s an example of a WR having the intensity Stills showed: in a playoff game several years ago Steve Smith was furious on the sideline with his teams play, so he told the coach to let him return the punt, he took it to the house for a td. Our Landry fumbled a reception in a 3rd quarter of a game his rookie season, shown on the sidelines he too was furious, but was intent on making up for it, and did so by scoring the game winning TD. Marino had that fire as well, as does Brady and Rivers.
Flores seems to know how to get the players to respond.
Rob – When you have little you look to improve. We have some rookies that flashed in preseason and we have recycled vets like Orchard and Carradine plus the disappointing Charles Harris. Is Clowney an upgrade over all of those guys? Sure, but I don’t think he’s going to be worth the cost of a trade plus what it’s going to cost to keep him here in MIA in the next few years. He’s just not a huge impact player, he’s a nice player. He’s what I would hope Charles Harris could be, but he’s had 4 years to show his stuff, and he hasn’t really shown that much IMO
Clowney is a huge upgrade over the current DEs.
Not saying much though. If you’re so eager to give Clowney a pass for his first 2 seasons, do the same for Harris. He’s been hampered by injuries, nothing major, but he was hurting last season. Maybe he breaks out this year. Next year is supposed to a very good pass rushing class, we can draft a DE or 2
I’ll certainly give Harris a pass, if he makes the Pro Bowl the next 3 years.
I’d really like to see all of our WRs, TEs and RBs get the chance to do their thing, behind an OL that isnt leaky.
Harris and Parker for Clowney and a conditional late pick from HOU.
I’m kind of on the fence on bringing in Clowney. The defense might be one Clowney-esque player from being really, really good. Seeing the offense has under construction signs all over it, maybe the front office and coaches are willing to trade parts from a potential weakness (offense) to make their perceived strength (defense) that much greater. I’d probably be more intrigued if Clowney showed more initial interest in coming to Miami and was just a little more disruptive in the passing game.
It’s not about the initial interest for me, it’s what he thinks after he talked to Flores.
We are rebuilding. Why would we want a big money player like Clowney on the possible short term? Would be completely different if we could ink him to a contract.
It isn’t set in stone this team is going to stink and only win a few games. If the OL settles in we could be pretty good, but Clowney isn’t being looked at to just be here this year and next year, he’s being looked at as being the cornerstone of the DL for the next 6 years.
We’ve gotten rid of a lot of older players and replaced them with the next guy up, but it’s ok to replace them with some younger great players too.
I keep hearing, we’re rebuilding, so why do this…There’s not just one way to rebuild, and you still do have to keep a fan base mildly interested.
When you say two years on him is that because a 2nd franchise tag would be available? Not sure how that works after a trade.
And Vegas has us at 4.5 wins. Clowney would have to agree to be that guy for 6 years.

__________
Steve, thank you for keeping the whole conversation in the picture and on point, and not letting it spiral into tangential crap. Of course the Dolphins aren’t going into the trade specifically thinking “we’ll get Clowney for 2 yrs, end of story.” They are hoping to keep him long term. Duh.
The fact is, the situation with Clowney demands the end result may be he’s gone after a year or two, and we have to be ok with that going into the trade, otherwise we don’t do the trade. So what some of us are saying isn’t “yeah, lets get him for 2 years”. We’re saying “if this happens is it worth it?” Some of us think it is, others don’t.
The way I understand it is we can’t trade and sign him to a long term contract right away because the deadline to sign franchised players long term has passed. This year Clowney is playing under the franchise tag. So if we trade for him, the worst case scenario is we get him for a year or two, then he walks. I see it as not a bad deal, we recoup a 3rd, and get a premier guy for 2 yrs at under market value. Best case scenario, he is what we hope he is, and we can come to a long term deal with him at the end of this season or next.
As I’ve been saying, I am ok with the idea as long as we don’t give up too much in the way of draft picks, but I understand those that don’t like the idea and would rather keep the pics.
This team is rebuilding, and was given the Ok by Ross to do so, but that doesn’t mean we’re like an expansion team. Sure we let some vets go, but those guys didn’t fit into the future plans.
Flores is building a physical, hybrid team, one that will be able to compete against multiple types of teams. In years past the Ravens have had our number, because we couldn’t match their physicality, and that may still be the case, but we’re moving in the direction of a physical team.
We’ve already seen from the first 2 weeks of preseason this team change from a scoring team to a defensive team, that may continue week to week in the regular season.
I think by at least mid season teams aren’t going to want to play us.

Great take on why we would want him, but seems he wants a contender. Same time the visit was interesting. No money talk involved just do you want to work here.
Mike did you read this?
Great article.
I’ve followed Kyle Crabbs for a long time… and he is a Dolphins fan. But more importantly, he’s an internet scout who knows his stuff.
This article is a really good take on why we should want Clowney. I’d like to read an article explaining why we should not want him. As for me, I’m still on the fence. We shall see.
This article is the same way I feel for making the trade.
Disagree strongly
If we did sign Clowney and he walks no guarantee we get that 3rd round pick. If we are big buyers in free agency that year we will not. And least next year gonna have a good amount of cap room.
The 3rd would be 2 or 3 years down the road, and no guarantee of course, but if you want it you trade for guys instead of FA them.
It would be 2 years if we franchise again, even if return would be in the 2022 draft. And yeah you could trade. Even if doubt they redo a whole offseason based on that…. interesting thought on how to get around.
You dont get the compensation until the following year, so if we franchised him twice, then he walked, we could get a 3rd in 2022.
steve — isn’t that what I just said? 🙂
How would anyone here feel, if Buffalo got Clowney and we had to deal with him the next 6 years? I considered that and when they got Mario Willians years ago, what that was like for us, before I decided I wanted Clowney (for the right price).
I think the reasons to not want him boils down to the package of giving up pick(s) and paying out a large contract for a rebuilding team, then throw in the risk of giving up picks and not getting a contract out of him. The 2nd franchise tag would be in the 20 mil range I believe, so then the question becomes do you franchise him in year 2 or let him walk after a year.
Usually in this scenario, the team trading for the player has the opportunity to hammer out a long term deal. Part of the reason Clowney is going so cheap is that isn’t an option. It seems to me the Texans FO bungled this situation pretty badly. Clowney should have been traded like two months ago to get good value for him. Nobody was going to give up a 1st+ for no security and what might end up being a 1 yr rental.
Contingency trade, like a conditional 2nd in 2021, if…
Yeah, I’d be surprised to see that as part of any deal, but it’s an unusual situation so it’s certainly a real possiblity.
Interesting take on Clowney’s evolution. Based on this, it seems he’s put in the work for sure. This and the good article MF13 posted make me more intrigued.
Thank you for posting this, Twice. Good video!
Acquire talent. Clowney is an above average talent, and I think he will improve too. If you can work out the compensation, snag him. I said last year that this defense is a couple good players away from being pretty good. Wilkins and Clowney MIGHT be those couple of players.
***
Also, Houston moved Clowney around a lot, and I think that may have impacted his overall numbers. He wasn’t just a stand up, edge rushing DE. I think he’d be a great addition to this defense, but it all comes down to compensation.
We’re on the same page.
My problem is that even if Clowney looks good — Clowney for 2 seasons does not. That’s like $35 mil that could be spent elsewhere. He sticks would be different but we wouldn’t know when we pull the trigger.
Cards are on a tear. Looking for the sweep today in Milwaukee. Hoping for an assist from the Mets against the Cubbies today to give us some more breathing room.
Synchronized swimming?
Curling?
Curling?
LOL
Alright, after watching the video that Twice posted above, I think I’m wanting to secure Clowney. However, the price (compensation) has got to be right. If Kyle Crabbs is correct in his estimation that Clowney can no longer demand a 1st or 2nd round draft pick [rather, a 3rd and a player(s) due to the timing of this all], count me as IN.
Also, we must all but guarantee that he can and will be retained for the long-term… if he produces for us, of course.
But there is simply no way to guarantee the long-term. I’d be all for this if was a sign and trade.
I hear ya, Stanger… there will be no guarantee, and especially if Clowney sucks for us. This is part of the problem in trading for Clowney, and my #1 reason why I would be against as much.
It’s very tantalizing to make this trade, but buyer beware. You’re beginning to talk me down from making the trade. 🙂
Lol at sign and trade😆
What did you find funny about sign and trade Steve? Know it is not possible. Maybe missed the joke.
Twice’s video from above is entitled “Killer Clown”. As such, this should be Jadeveon Clowney’s theme song: the very talented Tech N9ne…

Silly statement that Seattle just cleared a roster spot they were already at 89 and did not need a spot
It’s just someone trying to create a story without checking the facts.
Their roster was already at 88. They didn’t need to make room if they wanted him.
No no no no no to 🤡
Do it Seattle do it!! Save me he Dolphins from stupid mistakes
why would anyone want to live in Seattle???
Seattle is a nice city
Yes it rains – but it’s a great City
I got a better idea guys
Let’s sign Mario Williams
Phil Phinatic has an article that says maybe we shouldn’t trade for Clowney, because the build will take 3 years, then, a couple more for a playoff push, then in 7 years maybe be a contender. WTF, no one even projects out 4 years in the NFL, this isnt the pre FA era.
why would Seattle pay Clowney and not want to pay Frank Clark? Clark is younger has been more durable and has better numbers than Clowney yet they dumped him.
now they will take on Clowney giving the texans compensation?
doesn’t make sense
Maybe we don’t know the whole story. I haven’t heard where Seattle was interested, all I heard was it was one of Clowney’s preferred.
Until Clowney signs his tender, all of this talk is just speculation, except Clowney met with Flores, so he’s at least intrigued by player for the Dolphins.
Gotta figure he won’t sign it once a trade is in place, if he approves the landing spot, so he keeps his leverage about where he goes.
sigh
…won’t sign it *until* a trade is in place…
If he waits too long he’ll be losing 1m per week, i doubt that will happen, i’m sure he’ll sign, one thing players like above all else is a pay ck and 1 mil per week is way too much to pass on, so forget the leveon bell plan.
That is a good point.
I know it’s been mentioned by many here more than a couple of times, but the media landslide of us easily being the worst team in the league is really starting to grate on me. Every ‘ranking’ article i read: team, QBs, coach, WRs, toiletries on team plane, dline, pass rush. They all start with us being 32, and some form of “Since the Dolphins will hands down be the worst team in the league this year…”
This kind of stuff usually doesn’t matter to me, but it’s so damn prevalent.
Yeah it is annoying. Based on what I’ve seen in the PS and I know it’s just the PS, but I see a defense that could be pretty good.
I am excited to see how the defense progresses this year. We have a lot of young talent that will only improve as we move forward.
Didn’t we cut some guys recently? Well there you have it, we’re making room for Ckowney. 🤡
Same shit last year.
Ross mentioned he’s given them permission to rebuild, so reading that, to fit an agenda, the Fins are tanking for Tua.
Like I mentioned last night, if your IQ isn’t at least 75, you cant be in the military, so what do these guys do? Play ball or write about playing ball.
This was a response to Cav above.
Lol, yeah it doesn’t seem like it takes much to be one of these journalists. So often the work is just laaazy. You can read a guy, and think to yourself “you literally know next to nothing about my team”.
I used to love reading those season previews, then in 1998 I started posting on the Miami Herald’s site, since then when I read the previews it’s been like 3 month old news. Same crap our beat writers put out during OTAs, and they’re selling this shit for like $10.
hurricane Dorian expected to make landfall around vero BCH sunday at a cat 3!
Actually it looks as if it’s headed to Ocala…Oh Shit!
Better get that round of golf in quick…
I’m a bit ignorant about hurricanes. Is a cat 3 potentially devastating? If so, apologies for making light of it…
Yep, just looked it up. My bad. Stay safe.
A cat 3 can rip off roofs, very intense but not total devastation like a cat 5 but who knows, they can strengthen real quick, Katrina passed right over me when i lived in (Cooper City, S FL) I think it was a cat 1 or 2, lots of downed trees and loss of power for a week, i didn’t know it strengthened to a cat 5 and hit New Orleans until after i got my power back on.
I slept through Andrew, i lived in east HLWD at the time and it was headed right for me, i didn’t think much of it and went to bed, during the night it shifted S and hit homestead/ Kendall. Total devastation, looked like a nuke bomb went off, after that all hurricanes get my respect!
Wow, it’s crazy you guys have to deal with the possibility of this happening every year.
Ocala is in the middle of the state which is good, any Hurricane would have to cross a lot of land to get here and it would likely be diminished at that point
One ripped through Orlando about 10-15 years ago. We had a hotel that still reaked of mold a month later.
That was Charlie in ‘04, that was the worst one I’ve ever seen living here since 83. It kicked our ass.
I think that was the one that killed all those people on the west coast in that trailer park.
ORob — long way before Dorian makes landfall. Lauderdale was in the crosshairs yesterday and now just on the edge of the cone.
With Irma we were supposed to be ground zero the night before, but then she swung west. Guess she thought Naples was way cooler to visit than me. 🙂
One of my friends just bought a mobile home in Vero and Irma was a cat 5 crazy strong and was headed right for him….what did he do?….he drove to his moms house in Naples and drove right into it! LOL
Rob, Seattle is a cool city. I have been 3 times for work. 2-3 days each visit and I have enjoyed visiting there each time. My only problem was that at 9:30 at night it’s still daylight!!
Seems like bad weather all the time, probably freezing in the winter, raining alot as well, my golf game would suffer.
Orob, yes it was. It made landfall there (can’t think of the name of the city) then basically came right up I-4.
We could hear the shingles being ripped off our roof.

I would just want to make DAMN sure
that the deal we commit to to get Clowney does NOT
“Set him up for life” like the one we did with Suh,
then he just sleepwalks for us like Mario cough cough Williams did
while banking prime coin and swamping our cap
like Suh IS STILL DOING.
The situation with Mario Williams was different. He was done. He hasn’t played since we cut him.
Also just because it doesn’t work out with some players doesn’t mean that’s the case with everyone else.
no I think he tanked for Buffalo is what I am referring to.
By the time he got to us, he was a zombie.
As a fan I’m just going to go with the flow of how Grier and Flores want to build the team. At the end of the day it’s about the results on the field, not how they went about it with who they signed, traded for and drafted.
So the odd and maybe good thing about it is
we CAN’T sign him for 6 years for $100M because of the “rules”
so we might be protected from drooling stupid money at him.
So like Cav said, We pay up the Tag money for 2019,
and he is FORCED to play hard to get someone to pony up the huge payday.
which could be us
If he seems to love us (Flores)
and the chances of that are good.
Then he will play honest for us even though we unload the Brinks truck
because he gets caught up in US being a Super Bowl contender
and HIM being a HoF megabucks guy for 6-8 years.
That is best case scenario.
Don’t know about y’all, but I’m not jiggly with expanding the playoffs. Would just mean some bad teams getting in.
Maybe if they shorten the preseason
The playoffs are fine the way they are
They’re just trying to find ways to make more money, not make the game better.
So if I’m reading that right, you add a 3rd WC team for each conference, and only the top seed in each conference gets a bye week one of the playoffs? It makes me feel old, but I just inherently rebel at the idea of changing the current format.
Leave the format alone, and tell them damned kids to stay off my lawn!
Damn right!
Seattle used to be a great city, like San Fran. Now has the same problems.
This is what the golf courses look like in Seattle
My people have been living and dying with Hurracan
for 20,000 years.
the Nahuatl (Yucatan),
Escambee (Pensacola),
Edisto (Charleston),
Teqesta (Miami), and
Calusa (Naples) people
In Carib, Maya, Muskogee, Yamassee,
the word Hurracan refers to
“God of the Wind”
“Heart of the Sky”
“Rage of the Storm Spirit”
basically a rainshower with some thunder
Naples — your ancestors here before Columbus got here?
Making the playoffs should be difficult not easier.
Exactly.
I Favor 2 Preseason games, 16 regular season games, and an extra “BYE” week for each team. I’d also like to see rosters EXPAND by 2-3 players during the final 4 weeks so that it would be a bit easier to rest players in December who need it.
I DO NOT favor an 18 game regular season NOR do I favor more than 6 teams per conference in the playoffs.
THAT SAID, if the NFL goes to an 18-game regular season, you can FORGET ABOUT a second PERFECT SEASON. Which would make the ’72 Dolphins EVEN MORE SPECIAL than they already are!
GOOD NEWS on Mrs. OD’s Lumbar surgery. Just got her home a little while ago and she’s a bit groggy. But it seems her back pain is already lessened at least a bit. I’ll need to spend tomorrow at home. But if all goes well, I’ll return to work Friday.

NOW the bad news. The new “CONE OF UNCERTAINTY issued by the Hurricane Center has most of central Florida right in the middle of it. Looks like Dorian will be a Category 3 storm when it hits Florida. But, we all know, forecasts and projections CHANGE. So, hopefully, “THE CONE” will shift in the next 4 days, perhaps to a trek that goes out to seas.
BUT, right now, we are dead center in the target. And our lake is already close to overflowing.
Awesome for your better half. How far inland are you? Didn’t plan it that way but real happy at times like now off the shore some.
YOUNG STANGER: The house we rent here in the Lutz-Land-O-Lakes area is surrounded by sevERAL LAKES THAT ARE ALREADY FULL. The house we own back in West Palm Beach is about 2 miles west of I-95 and about 4 miles due south of Palm Beach International Airport.
If the storm stays on its present course (unlikely) we will need to seek refuge somewhere here in Tampa Bay, maybe a high floor on a multi story hotel.
Hoping you guys don’t even have to worry about it. Even if that might mean bad news for other good folks. If they want to punish the bad should come my way. 🙂
Steve – I read the article, still don’t necessarily agree with his viewpoint. I just don’t see elite with him. I know Randy used the excuse that they used him in a lot of different places. Are we going to be saying the same thing about him here, when we do the same thing? Are we going to be making that excuse for the next 5 years with Minkah? If playing people at different positions make them worse, then why do teams do it? I know he has the size and speed to be elite, but they had tow guys on the Texans that rushed the passer at times better than him. There shouldn’t be a need to make excuses, if he hasn’t been elite with that kind of talent on defense, why will he be better here? Answer is, he probably won;t be.
OD – Best wishes for Mrs. OD! Hope she has a speedy recovery! Of course, hope the storm misses you guys entirely.
If anyone here is interested, I went to the interview today. For those of you that thought overdressed is best, wow, we were all wrong. Almost verbatim, the guy said “For your next interview here, lose the suit!” “We don’t do that here” “We’re like Apple”
But how did it go otherwise? And yeah shocked you heard that about the suit especially on an interview, but then I’m old school.
I said I saw the pictures of people who work at the place and they were all casual but I said I’d rather be overdressed that underdressed and he said “Not here”. When he was leaving and the Optician was going to come in to interview me I told him I was going to my car to throw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. He laughed, he liked that.
Laugh meant you were still in the mix. Good luck.
Oh shoot
Looks like this is the wrong place for advice
But we are really good about arguing who to trade for
This is a good place to get bad advice.
Still better to be told to lose the suit than to show up and have them think you are underdressed. Good luck!

LOL!
Stanger
yep my mom’s dad’s people walked over here from the hills above Puerta Vallarta
circa 10K BC
Also
My mom’s mom’s people were some of the first Spaniards to stay
… got off Columbus’s fifth trip and started the town of Pensacola in the early 1500s
(These details are a bit sketchy and subject to argument at Thanksgiving.)
My dad’s mom’s people were on the boat after the Mayflower up on Cape Cod.
My dad’s dad’s folks are newbies, however, came to Albany during the potato famine.
These are easily verified.
I am very patriotic and love America my country,
even if they changed the name to some Italian cartographer.
Naples — your roots go back early in every way imaginable. Pretty cool.
Osweiler visiting the Colts, they’re back in business…
LOL. Problem solved.
Piggy – It’s my fault more than anyone’s. If I had mentioned where I was interviewing, someone here may have known the vibe. It’s a totally different concept than any other optical place I’ve seen. More than that, they super successful at it, a multi billion dollar company
Stanger,
Sorry, I had to run back to work. I really don’t pay much attention to contract stuff. I understand your concern about “renting” a player, and I agree that it’s a bad way to build a team. I guess I just don’t understand why everyone thinks that’s what will happen. If that’s for sure what’s gonna happen, then I wouldn’t sign him.
***
MikeE,
It wasn’t an excuse. I just think his sack numbers may have been impacted by how he was used. I don’t think he’s a “gotta have” sort of guy, but I do think he is a very good fit for the defense we are supposed to be wanting to run. We have gotta find a way to improve our run defense. If you can’t stop the run, you have very little hope of winning consistently. Clowney will help a lot in that area, and I do think he can also be a 10-12 sack guy too. Elite? No….but pretty darn effective. If they can get him without giving up the farm and he truly wants to be here….then I say do what you can to get him. You set a framework for what you feel he’s worth and stick to it. If the pice gets too high…you say bye bye.
^
Frikkin’Pats are trade happy.
No matter who they bring in on the OL Brady will still have a tea party for a pocket.
Because they allow the cheats OL to hold.
Why are teams that are competing with the cheats for the AFC trading players to them?
Mike, sew a swath of denim on the inside of your suit jacket. Next interview you go to, if you hear “lose the suit”, you can flip it inside out and really impress them!
I’m showing up to the next interview in Daisy Dukes and a tube top
LOL
Mike, would you rather have Wake in his prime or Clowney as he has been the last 3 years?
I’d rather have Von Miller or Khalil Mack
Two 1st rd picks and over $100M?
Tim – No, he was asking about players, not the compensation I had to give up
Randy – From what I’ve heard Clowney will be looking for J.J. Watt type money, that’s the farm and the whole damn town too! I don’t see why anyone here thinks we can get him on the cheap. The trade value we’ll have to send to HOU will be steep, and the money we have to pay him to keep him here will be even steeper.
MikeE,
Well screw him then! I love the farm. Lol
LOL – I may be wrong, just going by what I’ve heard
I think a lot of folks here are afraid of big contracts for anyone. There are new markets for top shelf players which Clowney is. That’s just the way it is. Acquiring him does not mean we gave up on rebuilding the right way. He’s one player. The wrong way is what the Redskins have been known for – signing the top guys at 4-5 different positions in one offseason in FA. Clowney isn’t a vet on the other side of 30. He’s 26 which is the age that we want to target so they can play for 4 years before they’re even 30.
A lot of you guys who don’t want to go after him are coming up with anything you can to criticize the player to support your opinion. Clowney is a top edge guy in this league, there is no way around that.
Is he a top shelf player? Top 5? I don’t think so, maybe that’s where we disagree
His career got off to a slow start because of an injury. Since then he’s been difficult to block in both the run and pass game. He helps free up others to make plays too.
I don’t go by top 5 because it’s just a number people throw out there. What if there are 14 top edge guys who are all in the same talent range? Go get one if you can.
We were never in cap hell because of Suh and Tannehill or anyone else. The problem was we didn’t assemble a good team so we started over this offseason. A year removed from Suh and now Tannehill and we’re almost $30M under the cap and we’ll be over double that next year. We don’t have to worry about paying a QB big money for 3+ years and if we do, that means we found our guy and we’re probably doing pretty well.
Mike
Did they tell you to lose the pants too?
All I can say is I felt very awkward about being overdressed. Not sure of that was just to see how I’d react or maybe they feel really against corporate America (That’s what it sounded like)
If it matters that much to them I would wonder why they didn’t give you a heads up. Are they looking for the guy that just naturally goes to interviews with bedhead hair wearing just a bathrobe and some flipflops?
I’m sure they understood and respected your professionalism.
It’s all BS, if they cared more about how you were dressed than the job you might do, then why would you want to work for them?
It sounded like an oh by the way, you dont have to wear a suit. In other words it has no affect on the hiring process.
Kong, in the email they sent there was a “What to Wear” heading
“We always want to present ourselves as style (and optical!) experts so neat, clean, and professional are the sartorial watch-words. Of course, feel free to express yourself and showcase your personal style!”
Unless you’re wearing a fucking suit! lol
Weird, it seems to me they are sucker punching. The key words I take from that are neat, clean, professional. Based on those keys words, I would interpret personal style to maybe mean an interesting tie or a where’s waldo pin. Not, you’re overdressing if you wear a jacket. I already hate this company and I have no idea who they are, lol.
But of course I hope you get the job.
I think the jacket signifies respect and true desire to be their selection. Going all out on the interview shows your mindset towards getting the job. That said, it’s also not looked down on by the newer generation to not wear the jacket. Also really depends on the position you are applying for, the stance the business has as far as dress code, and the age of the person interviewing you. But like many here have said already overdressing for an interview really isn’t a thing.
In some tech circles where you have millennials doing the hiring you might seem too old school by wearing the jacket but that’s not common
It’s a flipping optometrist office. I don’t want my optometrist dressing like Jerry Garcia.
LOL, I get what your saying, D. I’m irked they made him feel bad for wearing a jacket.
That irks me as well. There’s a co-worker of mine that has one, because her semi-handicapped mother lives with her and needs one, but yet she uses it at work.
Same. I hate it. It’s very disrespectful.
LOL @ Kong!
Tim – Do you see him more as a 3-4 OLB or 4-3 DE for us, or near equal amounts of both?
He can play all techs across the DL and equally good as a DE and OLB. He fits this about as good as anyone could. You literally might see him anywhere and that affects an offense not knowing where he might be
Go look at some of his hilights and I don’t think you will question what he could do for us
What D said, he fits the multiple because he’s versatile and has elite athleticism and strength to give anyone in front of him problems. You have to know where he is and game plan accordingly.
LOL Kong, thanks bud. Maybe I just took it wrong the way the guy said it. I think I was just so surprised by that.
D – It was totally a Millennial that interviewed me, probably about 30ish, and he’s the Store Leader which is the highest position at any given store.
Ok then I see it but it’s stupid. You did the right thing.
He could have said it’s nice that you wore a suit, it looks very professional but we dress more casual here, so when you go to your next interview here, you can totally dress more relaxed and casual. That would have been fine.
I had a guy interview in a 70s throwback flared collar flare legged leisure suit slacks that we’re sickeningly skin tight an left the top shirt button opened to show a little chest lol. He also slid down in the chair to the point he practically was laying down. I would have appreciated your professionalism on that day lol. His style to me said unemployment
LMAO!!! That’s crazy, he must have been fucking around and just trying to push the envelope
He was doing some or did something before he came in. I wasn’t sure he wasn’t still in the shit he was out partying in the night before
LOL
Steve – These new companies want to totally change the culture of the workplace. They said they’re like Apple, and he meant it. I think they’re like you have to fit in with the way we do things, we’re not typical corporate America, we’re the Millennial’s and we rule!
On that same token, I do really like their team approach of running their stores, I think it’s the right way to do it.
If it doesn’t bother you and you feel like it would be a good working environment, then go for it.
My girlfriend retired 4 years ago, then went to work for a tech company, that sounds similar and she loved it, but she’s into the latest tech stuff and fit right in.
I really don’t care who starts at QB. I think the O will move the same with both of them, but succeed or fail based on what the OL does week to week.
If Drake doesn’t get traded I think he’s going to thrive this year, both Deiter and Calhoun are good run blockers.
It’s only the PS but if I was totally objective and didn’t know anything about Fitz and Rosen, and watched the games, I’d say Rosen looked better. He has more upside. Fitz can’t make the throws Rosen can and neither are big time runners, though both can pick up a decent gain or a 1st down with their legs from time to time. We won’t be running RPO as part of our offense. It will be as common as a flea-flicker. LOL
Fitz runs tough guy style, that good year with the jets he picked lots of key running first downs.
Yes but that’s not ideal.
Who cares, if its ideal? I’m just saying it’s what he does, he’s thicker than the guys tackling him, so it’s not like he’s getting hurt. When the play breaks down he can pick up a rushing first down, back breaking to the D. It’s what makes Russell Wilson so good, different style, but still running for a first down.
Omar on vacation in the motherland. This is what he tweets. SMH
60 years ago.
He was in Porta Rico? 😉
Africa, you know the wonderful united country (not continent). LOL
Mike E being a Curmudgeon again! 😉
Mike E

We didn’t mean you to go in THIS suit. We meant your tweed one.
Damn Mike! No wonder they told you not to wear the suit. What were you thinking 🤔
Mike, those new companies also like to give free beverages, snacks, and if big enough good cheap lunches. It might be worth it to talk to regular employees and see how they like working for the company.
First try. Hope this works. Pretty sure this is the suit Mike wears:
I’m real worried about this hurricane, they said it would be just a tropical storm, now they’re saying it may be a cat 3.
the path is what worries me, never has a hurricane taken this path, it’s over open ocean until it hits florida, well north of the bahamas.
it’s headed NW with a little draw spin on it and will come around for a direct hit on the coast somewhere around melbourne into orlando as of now.
this thing could get real intense like an off the chart cat 5! will flatten anything in its path. normally the mountains of hispanola slows down a hurricane or the island chains but this has no islands in its path just deep blue hot ocean water!
The water is extremely hot, it’s almost like bath water
I had the boat out of Jupiter and palm beach a couple weeks ago , and the water was the warmest it’s ever been recorded
Even my swimming pool isn’t refreshing anymore, it’s like a weak hot tub without the bubbles
This is not good at all, the storm could rapidly intensify before hitting FL becoming a cat 3-4
Be very careful ORob, and everyone in Florida
I sure hope my new roof from Irma holds up, I can’t be getting a new roof ever 3 years, my homeowners insurance will dump me
This is expected to be the worst hurricane to hit central Florida in over 30 years!
https://www.orlandosentinel.com/weather/hurricane/os-ne-hurricane-dorian-florida-threat-20190828-gw3b7npcxvfs5ca5cly2s5gdma-story.html
Ocean water temps off Jupiter are 85F
And palm beach is 86F
The water is so hot even the fish wouldn’t bite, and I fished from 20-500 feet deep , searching for a bite. No takers.
That hot water is really bad news for storms, I’m very nervous also.
Tiger Shark temps.
There were a lot of sharks out there, more sharks than I have ever seen before
Fishing patterns have changed recently, all sharks and no fish.
I even saw a huge one that was either a giant bull shark or a great white, I hauled ass and didn’t care to hang around to identify it
It had to be around 12-13 feet long and thick as hell, what a huge beast
Were all getting wet on this one
By late tomorrow we will have a much better idea of where the jet stream (Bermuda low) is going to steer this thing
Could very well be Vero / Ft Pierce
We are just below Jupiter so will likel6 miss the eye wall but expecting a load of rain from the dirty side
Get your supplies ready and be smart !
Hopefully You will be safe, my son lives in Melbourne and I told him to get away from the coast, he’s going to Orlando to stay with his friend
Orlando will catch hell too, but nothing compared to Melbourne
Melbourne home and building construction is shoddy, Palm Bay even worse
if they couldn’t handle Francis and Jeanne, they sure won’t be able to handle Dorian
My boat is at indiantown marina , I got it out of he water and it’s on the trailer covered up
I expect the cover to be missing forever somewhere in lake okeechobee, , but hopefully the boat will be ok
Of course if the dam collapses , its soggy toast. lake o dams are just dirt and grass built about 90 years ago, and some experts are saying it may collapse if a killer storm strikes it directly
Disney World is already warning guests of a possible closure Monday, and they are preparing for a possible close for Monday and Tuesday
The location of Disney was previously thought safe from Hurricanes when it was permitted in the sixties
The Disney area has for the most part been very fortunate to partially dodge several storms , with only a couple days having to close
Their luck may have run out this time
Disney being open or closed doesn’t effect Me going there, lol I haven’t been there in a few years, but I live only 10 minutes from Disney, so of course if the storm hits the Disney area, I’m in for a sloppy wet blowjob for sure
Last years red tide, killed thousands of fish, birds, Dolphins, manatees, turtles, even killed some dogs swimming in the water
But Not sharks, sharks are seemingly immune from a red tide so toxic it kills a variety of life, just not the ultimate survivors of the marine world
David, 12-13 foot bull would be huge. I’d say a white or tiger. Big great whites are all along the eastern coast. People think going out 8 miles and jumping in for a swim in the open ocean is awesome. Okay at your own risk. Big sharks are out there. They’re not far from the surf. LOL
You could be right, I’m not really sure how to identify a shark when I have the boat in gear hauling ass away from it, lol. He freaked me out a little because he wanted to eat the small 4 foot shark I had on the line, I cut the line and let him have his snack, and hauled ass
Let’s just say it was one of those sharks that inspires You to say, We are going to need a bigger boat, lol. That’s the kind it was
LOL
The same thing happened to some dudes a friend of mine told me about. Off the coast of Atlantic City. 19 foot boat, caught a 10 foot brown shark and dragged it in like a lure where a 16-20 foot white trailed it and attacked it. They cut the line and full throttled out of there. LOL
Wow, that’s HUGE
One time I wasn’t fishing a wreck off of Jupiter and had a chum bag out to attract yellow tails and muttons
About an hour into the fishing , a large shark stole my chum bag, lol
I was like, damn, I didn’t have another chum bag, but I had a fresh block of chum that had its own bag with it, so I put a giant circle hook in it, and attached it to my biggest rod and reel with a 400 pound steel leader, and 80 pound braided line on the reel
Sure enough, he stole it again, and the fight was on! I battled him for about 10 minutes, I had my drag tight, rod bent in half, with my feet against the gunnell pushing as hard as I could
This was easily the largest thing I ever had on the line, and after 10 minutes, he decided he was tired of playing with Me, and took off for the horizon, and not a thing I had was even close to slowing him down, I had to give up on him and cut the line
I never got to see him, but he had to be well over 10 feet long or I would have been able to catch him
I believe the gear was adequate for up to 10 foot shark, I have caught a 8 before, but over that, no way, not close
David, you’ve caught small sharks and know how strong muscled they are. Handling a 3 foot shark is a handful. Think about 10+ feet. You’re dealing with a whole other beast now. There is no handling that anymore other than sedation. LOL
Very true, I believe to catch a shark over 12 feet, You need a rig with 200 pound braided line, 800 pound steel leader, a harness and a fighting chair
And even then the captain will have to back down on it when it bolts for the deep or the horizon
He will have to back down hard, but hopefully not too hard ,he could swamp and sink the boat
I’m not really set up for this, lol. I usually target reef fish and pelagics
When the shark is as big as the boat, it’s time to leave.
Hell yes
Let’s all take a dip. LOL
https://www.cnn.com/videos/travel/2019/08/14/family-encounters-great-white-shark-massachusetts-dnt-vpx.whdh/video/playlists/cnn-travel-top-news-stories/
It’s not just the length that is impressive, the girth is too. Incredible power, like a small boat
A shark like that could actually tow a boat for many miles
That shark could destroy a small boat if it went insane. 14+ feet and 1,500+ lbs.
Yes, that’s true as well, and terrifying to think about
A shark like that could devour a person in one second, no chance of escape
I have thought before, what happens if a giant shark bites the outboard and takes it out of action?
Then You are dead in the water at the mercy of the wind, waves , Gulf Stream current, and a giant aggressive deadly beast, maybe more than one
Not good, I just leave the area when I spot a big shark, and find somewhere that doesn’t have large sharks
Not sure about devour but tear up with no chance of survival, no doubt. Now this big mama is a different story. LOL
I can’t even believe the size of that shark, holy hell it looks like it could kill an orca
She was believed to be pregnant and about 50 years old at that time. They’re still tracking her.
All the little fish around Deep Blue are saying; kill something so we can get the kibbles and bits. LOL
The hurricane is still only 85 miles an hour.
That’s nothing.
Here’s hoping it doesn’t strengthen too much.
