Dolphins make some surprise cuts – Look to potentially add DE Jadeveon Clowney in a trade with Texans

As you all probably know already, the Dolphins made some cuts yesterday, not reporting this, just recapping what’s happened. One of the bigger surprises was cutting DT Akeem Spence who we picked up last year from Detroit for a conditional 2019 7th RD pick. Also somewhat a surprise was cutting safety T.J. McDonald. Not surprising was parting ways with OL Will Holden (Not to be confused with actor William Holden). We also waived OT Jordan Mills who when we first picked him up after Buffalo released him I thought he may be our starting RT this season. The way he performed for us in practice and in the preseason made it clear that wasn’t going to happen. Also waived were LB Chase Allen, and veteran TE Clive Walford.

Now to the big news. The Dolphins met with Jadeveon Clowney yesterday, although Clowney did not deem the Miami Dolphins originally as a potential suitor. He preferred the Seattle Seahawks, but after meeting with Dolphins HC Brian Flores, his opinion may have changed. At the moment, it actually seems as if the Dolphins are the team most likely to land Clowney, but at what price? Keep in mind, the price is two-fold. We have to trade talent to the Texans in exchange for Clowney, and then we have to pay Clowney. He signed a 1 year deal worth just under $16M, but what happens after this season? Therein lies the rub . . .

I had to drive from one office to another yesterday and I had the pleasure of catching some good dialogue between NFL Radio hosts Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller. Pat Kirwan is not the foremost authority on everything NFL, but as a former HC and NFL GM, he’s well respected in NFL circles. Kirwan was very much against the Dolphins acquiring Clowney and made some excellent points. He was saying that Clowney hasn’t been a premier player while playing with J.J. Watt. This reminds me of tha situation the Dolphins had years ago. Flash back to the year 2002 when the Dolphins had Jason Taylor and Adewale Ogunleye. That year, Taylor had 18.5 sacks, Ogunleye chipped in with 9.5 sacks. This is a similar situation, it really is. Clowney having the benefit of possibly the most disruptive defensive player in the game hasn’t ever achieved double digits in sacks. BTW, Ogunleye only achieved double digit sacks once with CHI, and only once (10) in 2005. Granted, Watt hasn’t been able to stay healthy, but I’m loathe to give Clowney a huge contract when he’s never been a game changer. He’s young, he’s only 26, but where’s the beef? Understood he was injured his 1st season in 2014, and maybe had a hangover from that injury in 2015. Where’s the explosive stats after that? 24.5 sacks in 3 seasons. Sure, it’s better than what we have, but is it worthy of trading top talent away and then backing up a Brinks truck and paying him handsomely after too? I wouldn’t do it. 2015 Watt had 17.5 sacks and FIFTY QB hits. Clowney?4.5 sacks, 8 QB hits.

To me this more about getting a name than production, and as Naples mentioned, all too similar to acquiring Ndamukong Suh. I know we need help at DE, I’d rather run with the young guys who have shown some promise than really overpay twice to get Clowney, one in trade compensation and two having to pay some exorbitant contract for him over the next few years. I don’t think he’s worth it. Nothing wrong with kicking the tires, but don’t please don’t make the purchase!

Maybe so, it comes with some sacrifices on my part as well, but I do believe the work environment and job itself would be better than what I have now. The hours are not good, so I have to be willing to make somewhat of a lifestyle change

I believe Clowney is holding out at the moment because as we all know…work sucks…so why would he want to deal with pre season and training camp if he doesn’t have to?

I’d bet that tender will be signed prior to the first reg season game.

  7. the Fl king tides are monday, high tide at 11:07 am next monday near melbourne
Dorian is due to impact the east coast near brevard county almost at the same time

the combination of a high king tide with a storm surge will flood the coastal areas heavily
the rest of us should be able to ride this one out, it will slow down once it starts trashing melbourne or canaveral area

port canaveral coast guard has declared port condition whiskey.

that means everyone with a boat in the port needs to start heavily drinking whiskey, lol

    JK
what it means is the large boats have been ordered to leave the port, the ones that cant leave have to register with the coast guard and will get stuck with bills when their boat causes damages to the port

More chance than not you have nothing to worry about. Thev’ve been singing the same tune since I left Fl. in the 80s.

Think about it, if they said you had nothing to worry about, then no one would be prepared, if it did actually hit Melbourne, but the chance of it making that turn isnt likely, still enough though that they have to include people from Melbourne up in the watch list.

It only makes sense, because has no leverage to not sign it.
    ———————————————————————
His leverage runs out at the 6th game. At that point he doesnt gain a year of work under his contract, so he really doesn’t do anything but keep himself out of football for a year and make teams question where he is condition wise when signing him. His best bet is to make a decision now. I think though what ORob said earlier stands to reason, for us to be where he goes, that would have likely been a quicker move. The longer it goes on, i think the less likely its us that he winds up with. It also is more likely he doesn’t stay with Houston the longer it goes on too.

  11. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was thinking about Clowney. Before made clear that I don’t want him when might just be 2 years. That makes no sense.

But you know what does make sense — getting him 2 years from now. Maybe Flores was just doing a meet and greet to get ready for then.

  12. D's avatar D says:

Im leaning a little more him signing with Seattle than us right now.

  13. clowney says he prefers eagles or seahawks

  14. D's avatar D says:

Maybe this kind wi ds up on one of y’all’s hockey teams one day.

  15. D's avatar D says:

Stanger that 2 years is a chance to rent to own and we have all the rights to negotiate instead of having other teams involved trying to outbid.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But still just “a chance.” That’s a lot to pay $35 mil for. But bottom line is don’t think he will want to come here. Unusual situation in that not a single penny on the line for him. Wouldn’t you want to go to a contender instead of a rebuilding team?

I doubt you will get hit, i think it will come in around Ft Myers to Melbourne, There are people walking around that area that will be killed about Monday.

then it will curl up through the middle of the state and hit Ocala, hopefully by the time it gets here it will lose it’s strength, it’s going to be a bad one, billions in damage and lives lost

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Way early ORob — both as to track and intensity. Hoping for buddy wind shear to make the news.

      • D's avatar D says:

Its definitely one of the stronger ones i have seen since Andrew.

  17. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

The Eagles rotate their LBers/DE, Clowney is playing in a contract year, i doubt he will get the exposure there that he needs, the Hawks just dumped Clark, a pass rusher with better stats than Clowney, so why dump him and pay clowney, the seahawks make no sense

    • D's avatar D says:

That is a good point about where they were with Clark, though i dont think that you compare him to Clark. He has more potential and a better and more versatile skillset. We will have to see, but i can see HIM want Seattle more than us, i dont see him being in Philly more than us.

I didn’t say I definitely wasn’t taking it, I said I have to think about it, and hammer out some details which I haven’t yet had the opportunity to do. I was given the impression there were more interviews and discussing salary wasn’t going to be done until we offer the job which was waaay down the line. I’m at work today, so I spoke to the woman who offered it to me for 2 minutes before my coworker walked in. I told her I would call her tomorrow.

LOL Kong – That would be very ironical 🙂

  29. Mike, I think You will get it, today is a good day for getting good jobs!

I had an interview yesterday to be a part of a very large corporation as a partner

My main responsibility is the sales department, my new partner wants me to sell and teach others to sell.

He asked me how much money did I have in mind for my salary..?
I told him I hadn’t given it a lot of thought, but would let him know

He didn’t play that, he then offered Me $300,000 to start, with incentives to go even further than that.

I almost choked on my tongue, and would have said yes to only $100,000, lol
    I said YES
Goodbye semi retirement , it’s 6 days a week working for Me now, but It will be worth it if I can do this for the next 10 years

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Wow, congratulations! I’ll me making roughly 1/3 of that so good for you!

      • That’s good too, congrats, and I would have been happy with that.
I’m actually a little concerned, because he is expecting Me to be the best salesman in FL for this money, I will do my best to obtain his numbers, but if I don’t, the money will go away I’m sure
This guy blew me away with the numbers, but he is expecting a lot, so I will have to seriously sink my teeth into this job and belt out home runs all the time

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Cha Ching David — what does the company sell?

  30. Mike, You seem to be going through a corporate process, but keep the faith, believe You will get and You will, good luck

My process was quite different, my interview the owner crosses his arms, sits back, and demands Me to sell him HIS product, lol

I was dreaming he would do that, and I sold him on a $9,000 purchase, and he said, WOW, ok
That’s pretty good, lol. That was the interview, I didn’t even fill out an application, lol

This guy reminded me of wolf of Wall Street when he asks his underlings to sell him a pen

  31. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Good job! Way to let it all hang out

  32. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I just got done reading an article, 25 things not to do with your money. One of them was never post it on social media.

Then what do I see when I open this site, Mike’s getting a new job making $33K…😉

  33. My new partner makes me uneasy though, he took me around the offices introducing me as the best salesman in the world, half joking I’m sure

But it’s pretty evident he is expecting Me to be a super man, I am confident in my skills and have much experience, but he kind of blows me away when he says he expects 4 million a year in sales from Me

I’m going to take the challenge and hope for the best, because this is my last chance And likely last opportunity I will get

I did tell him go easy on the best salesman in the world stuff, lol. I was hoping to fly under the radar for the first couple of weeks

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

How are you a partner and there is already an office in place? Is it an LLC? And what are you selling?

      • It seems still sinking in. But when the guy says he considers me his equal and lays it all out for Me, I just did the right thing and said yes, lol

I’d rather not put all the details out because I’m nervous about it
It should be ok to say it’s an excellent opportunity for Me, and I hope to make the most with it, and that’s not really doxxing anyone

If we were in a one on one situation, I would explain in detail

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Good luck with it David. Only thing about the partner that got me was that they might be asking you to invest. But if that not the case then just go grab what you can out of it.

Late to the commentary on the interview attire but it seems at odds to say wear what you feel comfortable in, but don’t wear a suit. Maybe that’s what your personal style is. I will say for something in the healthcare field, Optician is in that group, I’d prefer them to look like they didn’t just roll out of bed and be scruffy looking.

Point of etiquette- You can’t have full metal jacket hollow points. FMJ precludes the possibility of hollow point because…you know….the whole bullet is covered. No place for a hole in the tip. And mercury tipped bullets are a Hollywood invention.

And stop telling people what they should or should not say. So again Old Chap… fuck off.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

        Ecause of physics and ballistics.

      • are they called jacketed hollow points instead?

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

So, the reason for hollow points is expansion on impact. FMJ is just the opposite. FMJ is about controlling and reducing expansion. Hollow points are only jacketed enough to keep the bullet from deforming (expanding) before they hit the target.

If you have rounds that are fully jacketed and hollow points, I would not shoot them.

I’m not altogether sure what language you speak, because I can’t always track what you are trying to say. So…to offer you some constructive criticism (not attacking you, you know), stop trying to sound super smart and educated by using words and phrases that you really don’t fully understand. And stop telling people what they should or should not say. So again Old Chap… fuck off.
    ———————-
Once again, I’m being accused of telling people what they can or can not say. I did NOT do that. I merely offered/suggested advice. I’m NOT TELLING PEOPLE WHAT THEY CAN OR CAN’T SAY!!!, to who I thought was another #2A supporter in Phelon.

If you disagree with a mere suggestion, it’s all good. To tell me to “fuck off”, it’s all good. But we’re NOT going to go with false narratives, as Pig tried to do to me (and failed, I will say).

How about you stick to football, Phelon? There’s enough people in Washington trying to take our guns/bullets away.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I say old Bean, What are you even talking about? Reading is fundamental. Here’s a narrative that’s not false…you are pretentious. Not attacking, just offering constructive criticism.

Why do mothballs smell so bad? I mean how big can moths balls be?

  62. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Vinegar is an essential ingredient in buffalo wing sauce

  63. The closest I get to vinegar is sometimes I’ll have mustard , bourbon or teriyaki sauce, salad dressing, or pickles

    But straight vinegar! No thanks

  64. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I like olive oil and apple cider vinegar and I also like red wine vinegar. It does have an intensely acrid aroma however.

  65. It’s good the game is in orleans tonight, the players can return home and have time to prepare for the hurricane

  66. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

David – So those are jacketed rounds, but not full metal jacket. Different things. And those are good rounds.

    • Thanks for the answer, I learned something today
Jacketed hollow point rounds, not FMJ hollow points

Yes, I fire some every once in awhile at an outdoor range, and they seem like they would spook off any stray vultures for sure 😎

I hit a pine tree with a round to see what it would do, it opened up a small crater

  67. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I really do not know what to think about tonight’s game.

Should we not play the 2 rookie guards so as to keep them safe?
We really have zero plan B on those guys if they get hurt.

If we had a viable alternative, they would have gotten some PT in competition.

  68. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

mothballs however are sickeningly sweet smelling. I hate that smell.

  69. The players love Tunsil and want him to stay in Miami

  70. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think Flores made the decision to not risk getting Wilson or Grant hurt, so that is why they have not played. They could “play hurt” if this was during the season.
I even think that is true of Drake, and maybe even Kiko and Raekwon.
Reshad, Tunsil, Kilgore, Parker, van Ginkel — none of those guys have played more than a few downs.
I’m very suspicious that ALL those guys are hurt so badly they can’t play.

I also think we have run VERY vanilla plays except for a few pass plays to get a read on Rosen.
But our run game has been 90% generic.

I’m simultaneously laughing my ass off at spontaneously British Phelon, and my heart is breaking for Krishna.

Krishna, I can’t even comprehend the pain of your loss. Trying to imagine coping with the loss of my wife is unthinkable. I truly and genuinely wish the best for you, hope you have a good support system around you, and am sending every ounce of positive energy I can muster your way, my friend.

  72. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I would be majorly pissed off if we trade Tunsil.
I’d be moderately pissed off if we trade Drake.

  73. Last preseason games are typically don’t play the starters, or play them very sparingly if there is a competition, or the player needs more film or reps

Rosen and Fitz will likely play the first half, and Ruddock the second half would be my guess
Tunsil will likely get some work since he missed last week

  74. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Mothballs and hot wings? Wtf? lol

  75. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I use lemon, not vinegar in my hot wing sauce. And I tend to keep mothballs as far away from the sauce as possible.

  76. Phel, I didn’t even know those rounds were available online until I looked today.
I gave my buddy a buck per round, but on that site You can get 20 rounds for $16.95

That seems like a great price to Me, Do You think so?

  77. I like the .40 cal, it’s not over the top like a 44 magnum, those are bad as hell, lol

    but it’s not exactly a 357 or .38 either

its a great all around cal size imo

Probably scrapes past Orlando & mushes up to Gainsvville as a sloppy TS.

or it could do any GD thing it wants.

  80. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

David – $16.95 a box for .40 cal Black Hills is a reasonable price. A buck a round is questionable. The problem with hand loads that you don’t do yourself is quality and consistency.
