Miami Dolphins trade LT Laremy Tunsil and WR Kenny Stills to Texans!

OK, this is a shocker, no two ways about it! In addition to trading away our cornerstone LT, we also traded away controversial WR Kenny Stills (BUH-bye) and future draft picks, a 2020 4th RD pick and a 2021 6th RD pick. What do we get in return for all of this??? TWO first RD picks, a 2020 1st RD and a 2021 1st RD pick and 2021 2nd RD pick as well. and two players, special teamer DB Johnson Bademosi and OT Julie’n Davenport.

I don’t even know how to digest all this to be honest. Things look great for the future, although now we have to find a legitimate LT which will probably require a high pick. I realize we have now have 2 first RD picks in both next year’s draft and also in 2021, but now the rebuild seems to be full on, and it’s going to require some patience here. While the future looks promising, I have my doubts about how competitive our team will be with a poor offensive line.

I understand well that no player is “untradeable”. There is a value for everything, and GM Chris Grier felt he got more value than he could turn down for his best OL and really the cornerstone of our offensive line, then he did the right thing. Time will tell, because Laremy Tunsil is a great tackle, he was an excellent pass protector as well as a demon in the run game. Kenny Stills was a deep threat WR who has been making big plays for us since he got here, but in limited quantities. He probably should have been more during his tenure here, and his decision to speak up against Dolphins owner Steve Ross probably led to him being a part of this trade as well..

What I guess we all have to realize is that this year is definitely compromised. I would say we all had some doubts about our O-line with Laremy Tunsil, so those doubts just intensified w/o him. Is Zach Sterup our LT? Do our QB’s routinely get “Julienned” if newly acquired OT Julie’n Davenport is playing LT? Do we pick up another LT off the cut scrap heap? LG Michael Deiter’s job just got a whole lot more difficult, wouldn’t you think?

Next year’s draft should be exciting for us, but watching this season, at least for me at this moment, looks to be a scary prospect. I think we’re putting an inferior product on the field on offense, with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick starting behind what appears to be a very shaky O-line. We heard rumors about a locker room revolt if Laremy Tunsil was traded, I suppose we’ll see if that’s true or not. I hope it’s not, because things may tough enough for this team this season without that.

Fromm playing tonight but pay attention to their LT he is supposed to be one of the best in college this year
    —————————————————–
D, Fromm looked decent, but man, you are on it about that OL. Georgia looks to have the best OL in college football and that LT is a beast. Going to keep a close eye on him through the season. Is he draft eligible next year?

  4. i wanted to hate the Tunsil trade, because hey, he is our best OL

but we ripped off the texans , they made other questionable moves, and didnt get good value for their trades

everybody loved Tunsil, so much that we overlooked the fact that Tunsil was PFF 36th rated tackle in the NFL last season

36 is NOT elite, its just average at best, we should be able to find an average OT with all of these draft picks

one more thought, the FIns are obviously wanting Tua and Rosen to be their two main QB,s

Tunsil plays left tackle and Tua is left handed. for a left handed QB, the emphasis is not on the LT, but the RT

Tunsil would have to play a different position that pays less, so he likely wouldnt want to move to RT

if the team goes for TUa, dont be surprised if they draft a RT first instead of a LT

Stills will be missed as well, but he basically had little trade value, so all in all Miami won this trade, even though it doesnt help til next year

the brown showed the NFL how to rebuild, and the Fins are taking a page out of the browns playbook on rebuilding

  5. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

What are we getting in compensation for Kiko?

  6. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Here’s to hoping the Texans finish at .500 or worse!!!

  7. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

the FIns are obviously wanting Tua
    ———————————
How is that obvious? Tua is a good QB but not elite.

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Besides, I don’t think it would be the “Patriot Way” to have a QB who’s first name sounds like someone spitting. LOL

  8. fitzpatrick is hardly elite, Tua would be a serious upgrade

  9. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Damn, could Rashad be next? We have 5 safeties on the roster.

  10. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Tunsil plays left tackle and Tua is left handed. for a left handed QB, the emphasis is not on the LT, but the RT
    ——————-
Then we will need 2 left handed qbs.

The new way is scheme fit (should’ve always been that) instead of forcing a round peg …

  12. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

It’s nice to say “we will play to our players’ strengths,” but that’s 8-8 philosophy, because then you have no cohesive scheme. You are trying to accommodate several different probably conflicting styles.

So our new way is to say “this is our style, so let’s get the best guys for that style and then see if our style can win, then tweak that.”

We had to do something to break out of the dreaded 8-8 cycle.

In the short term, it means removing everyone who does not fit the new scheme.

Kiko is a hustler who won us a couple games outright, but he also lost us a couple outright.
    Thus 8-8.

I was back at MetLife stadium last night for the last of the Jets CFO’s daughters being Bat Mitzvahed. It was a great night as per usghe. The parties are always nice. I told him about the Tunsil trade, and understandably, he hadn’t heard about it. That’s why I didn’t answer the 648 texts that were going back and forth last night. OMG!

Tunsil is an elite LT, I don’t care what PFFfffffffffft says. Obviously Houston thinks he is too!

  16. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The good thing is that our QBs in the pre-season were already playing with the guys from the new scheme in the new scheme, and we were bascially undefeated save for a last minute TB drive against guys presently unemployed.

Fitz and Rosen have alread played 90% behind a line without Tunsil. And our RBs chewed up chunks of yardage.

Our Defense played basically the whole preseason without Kiko.

  17. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Mike
Tunsil was amazing at pass protection but lacking in run blocking
I don’t think he as elite
    I think he was good

our new LB also plays ST … 26 yrs old and from U Wisconsin

NFL CAREER – Originally selected by the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft (108th overall), Vince Biegel joined the Saints practice squad before the start of the 2018 regular season. After being elevated to the active roster during week three, he appeared in 14 games for the Saints in 2018, posting three special teams stops (one solo). Biegel adds depth to the Saints linebacking corps and also brings valuable experience on special teams.

  19. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i think Tua is way overrated, he’s on a team of studs, other college teams are at a great disadvantage going up against alabama. when he hits the NFL he wont have that advantage any longer.
i’m not saying he wont be great but where he plays and who he plays against is not a good test to know if he will make it at the next level.

there are not many dukes in the NFL.

  20. THere’s no logical reason to think Miami has there eye on one particular player

but there is a ton of circumstantial evidence

Miami is sending scouts to every Tua game, they are starting FItzpatrick, and Tunsil and Stills are now gone

they dont seem to be bringing in help for Fitz OR Rosen, instead, they are stockpiling picks for the future.

Tua, who many believe is the top pick of next year, is in Miamis sights, and Miami will be able to afford him

of course they may find a punter or rb they are more excited about, lol jk

    but I HIGHLY DOUBT that,

Tua will be a Dolphins next season, the handwriting is on the wall

we need him, we are setting up for him, and can afford him, he is the piece to our puzzle

  21. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    Plus the salary dump.
and the new guy is not known for late-hitting sliding QBs to give them auto first downs.
I like getting the player to use right now instead of another 5th or 6th round pick.

i just wonder the status of drake and X, could they be shopped for future consideration? why would we keep 6 rbs???

  32. D's avatar D says:

If we did get Tua we might as well get his RT as well. Imo at this point I’d get Fromm and his LT with my two firsts even if it took trading up on one of the to get the LT. Still I’m thinking Rosen could be the one I’m not as convinced as some, at least not yet, that he isn’t as good as most this new crew

    • I have not given up on Rosen, I wish he was the starter now, and I really like him.

I’m not certain the Fins are 100 percent sold on Rosen though, and it appears like the team will be in an excellent draft position to bring in a top talent to push Rosen, because Fitzpatrick might retire after playing behind this 2019 OL

Rosen cannot be the teams only QB in 2020, another QB is needed

  33. The Fins could trade x to the Texans for
Tunsil, theIr third and fourth picks for 2020, and their 2nd and third picks for 2021

    • D's avatar D says:

We already have their 2021 2nd

      • We pretty much already raided the best of the Texans picks for their next 2 seasons.

I think they paid too much for Tunsil, but I think they were looking for LT for game One , and Miami is looking to the future

Texans basically gave away Clowney too, what a dumb trade that was . Texans are getting ripped off by NFL savvy GM,s

  34. D's avatar D says:

I’d got LT QB or DE depending on Rosen

I like how quickly you guys flip with every bit of news that drops about this team.

    • D's avatar D says:

You kinda have to restructure you thoughts when the team makes a move like that. I’m just riding the teams wave. Again it’s not my opinion it’s going off what I’m seeing them already doing. I wasn’t for Tunsil trade nor am I advocating trading X but it’s certainly not outside the realm of possiblity and more don’t ya think?

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Restructuring thoughts are one thing, freaking out like scared animals is another.

      • D's avatar D says:

Is that how I’m coming off? Don’t mean to be I’m just trying to get behind the new moves and new attitude they seem to be showing.

    • Any bit of news doesn’t describe what happened

The Tunsil trade is a big move, and it will dramatically change the Dolphins future.

I don’t think many of us saw the Tunsil trade coming either, as of yesterday, I thought we had Tunsil as our LT

The team is rapidly changing, so of course discussion changes , regardless of how much we like Tunsil, he won’t be there and the team is setting up for the future

  39. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I don’t think the emphasis on this team is to draft a great number 1 over all QB, I think the QB of this team is JAG. just be accurate and Rosen may fit that bill for years to come. we may already have our QB of the future and look to other positions to spend those picks.

  40. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not gonna see as much impact this year cause have to eat the prorated bonuses, but Stills, Tunsil and Kiko were all in line for big money next year. We’re gonna have crazy cap room in 2020. 90 mil+ would be my rough estimate.

  41. D's avatar D says:

Now that we are full on committing to the rebuild. Trade Jones, maybe X if they gave a ransom though I’m happy if they kept him and think that’s more likely.

  42. D's avatar D says:

Reshad may not be traded but stashed until a team gets desperate with a key injury. I don’t expect there is pressure to move him now

  43. It’s becoming much more difficult to argue the team is NOT tanking for Tua

    • D's avatar D says:

It’s not tanking. Their moves definitely say rebuild but not tanking. They got players back to fill spots. They traded for others on the OL straight up. Those moves don’t say tank, they say rebuild. We could have just kept the guys on the roster if we were tanking

      • I am still in shock over the Tunsil and Stills trade, 2 of our best players on offense.

Acquiring All the draft picks, Coupled with the fact that Fitzpatrick is starting against the Ravens, It just doesn’t seem like the emphasis is this year, it’s on next year

      • D's avatar D says:

I mean that part is true but Tanking is not that it’s a full out trying to lose. They are making too many corresponding moves for the sake of fielding a decent team that they wouldn’t bother doing if it was a tank. There is an emphasis on the following years, but we aren’t neglecting this year or completely flushing it.

  44. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

    D,

    • D's avatar D says:

Ok well I just was not understanding if my text wasn’t coming off right. I know I have no control over who goes or stays and part of the thinking it out is me prepping for what may be next lol

      • Agreed on the prepping for what’s next, lol

The Tunsil trade was a surprise, I thought once Clowney went to the Hawks , Tunsil was going to be here,,,,

      • D's avatar D says:

I did too. But again, like o said the other day. No one is completely safe and a beneficial deal that the FI thinks long term helps will be made. At least it wasn’t for a pack of airline peanuts

    • D's avatar D says:

Also I appreciate that sentiment as well.

  45. D's avatar D says:

Can’t believe you guys don’t remember Biegel. A lot here were mocking him to us in the year he came out.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      yep
I am not at all bummed by this exchange, especially as he is a better scheme fit as a multiple gap and “hidden pass rusher” type player, plays STs, and is more disciplined and steady than Kiko.

And slightly younger and way cheaper.

      • D's avatar D says:

He isn’t as athletic but he reads plays better and that will make him especially better in coverage. Alonzo had no excuse for being so bad in coverage. He just couldn’t diagnose the play.

  46. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Hey did anyone hear about this? 😉

  47. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

D, I can’t believe I left Sam Ehlinger out of QB discussion yesterday. He’s a Junior but may enter the draft next year. He is in my top 4 for sure. I like his game a lot! He’s tough, mobile and good accuracy. Dude dropped some dimes last year.

    • D's avatar D says:

I saw him a little yesterday, and what I saw was solid. I think he gets a bad rap because most the Texas QBs don’t pan out in the NFL. It’s like any time you think of QBs I know my first stop checking them out (outside the SEC which I obsessively watch) is PAC 12. Big 12 not so much though with Baker and Murray my thoughts are changing a little. He’s definitely got the size and the arm, so just need to eval him more to see.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Nix for Auburn looks decent as well

    • Wow, those are some dimes alright, I like his accuracy even when rolling out. I think he is reading the defense and leading the receivers, excellent arm, and downfield vision.

And when he runs, he has incredible vision there too, always SEES the best possible running lane to the end zone

  48. D's avatar D says:

David what SB7 was commenting about I’d extreme overreacting and yeah that is going on and it makes this place feel chaotic when it gets out of hand.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Board specializes in extreme overreacting, but that trade did hit me. Rebuilding turned into full on rebuild. Had our earliest possible contender window starting in 2021. Now pushing it back to 2020. And not ruling out a playoff spot…. just talking a chance at the ring.

    • Maybe so, but this news is kind of shocking, and it changed the team right now, and in the future
it also brings up a lot of what ifs with our remaining veterans

As far as the chaos goes, a good bit of that could be due to posts like SB7, that don’t really contribute to news of the team, but more directed at just trying to control what others are posting, or trying to belittle others opinions if they don’t match theirs.

Telling others what to say or not to say creates a lot of chaos, not today of course, but many of us have seen it in the past

  49. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Quick hit… coming up to end of 3rd year of building our business. Gave up FFB and nearly all online sports chatting lol. BUT… I have to comment on yesterday.

At least the Fins are no longer doing ‘half-ass’ rebuilds that predictably point toward .500 seasons.

This is a true nuclear blow up. We have drafted pretty damn good lately so all these picks we have coming up, plus all those rookie contracts, will allow the Dolphins to legitimately have the opportunity to start fresh. But they need to commit to Flores and (wait for it) … the process.

  50. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    from a texans blog

“the Texans first round picks the last several years include DeShaun Watson, JJ Watt, Jadeveon Clowney, DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller, and you may have just given up two future equivalent players in exchange for a guy who might be a mediocre OT. His career best PFF grade is 70.7 and he’s never finished better than 36th in the OT rankings”

  51. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Glad we traded Kiko. Wish it would have been for another pick though. Kiko is a really good LB but could tell he was not a “fit”. He seems to be more of a see football/get footall LB. More reactive than instinctive. Maybe he has had 1 to many concussions, I don’t know. I keep thinking about the Ravens game where he went to their sideline and it took him a few to realize where he was at. lol

  52. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Houston gave up their draft capital cause they are in win now mode. Hope it bites them in the ass like it has other teams in the past. Again, hope they finish .500 or worse.

  53. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

LeSean McCoy signed with the Chiefs.

  54. If the team cut Alonso, it was only a $26,000 savings against the cap

I haven’t worked out the numbers on the new guy yet, but my guess is if he gets cut the Dolphins are in much better cap position

Beigel is NOT an upgrade over Alonso, so the reason for this trade has to lie elsewhere, the cap would be my guesstimate

  55. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Maybe he didn’t get the memo that the team is rioting?????

  56. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

D, I think my only knock on Ehlinger right now (from watching last season) is he seemed to stare down his 1st read about a half second to long. Something Fromm doesn’t do. Maybe we will see different this year. Another thing about Fromm is he lost all his big targets including TE from last year and will be interesting to see if he has any drop off from that. Seemed to affect him a little yesterday in finding open targets.

    • Good point, Ehlinger gets away with it because his OL is awesome and gives him a lot of time

It’s safe to say Ehlinger will not get that good of protection when he comes to the NFL, he will need to develop more NFL skills, like all rookies have to do
And that includes looking off receivers, checking down the list, reading the field, better footwork, etc, but this guy has great potential IMO

  57. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  58. Demaryius Thomas WR cut by the pats

  59. Thomas would be a good over the top defense buster since we lost Stills
Thomas is a home run threat on any play , but it looks like Denver is interested in bringing him back

  60. In December of 2018, Thomas had a torn achilles, but he did have a good preseason with the pats
It’s likely he will get another chance to play somewhere

  61. Dorian is hitting the Bahamas with 185 MPH sustained wind, gust over 220, and has a 20 foot storm surge

Only if you are looking at this season. They are doing it like the Browns. We’ll see how it works out but they are gonna have enough picks and cap money to rebuild this team exactly how they want. And if Rosen shows he is the guy all the better.

The more I look at this trade, the more I see it as a no-brainer for us. The Texans are idiotic. We weren’t a playoff team before the trade, and we still aren’t. But we are set up better than any team in the next two drafts and we have the capital to keep the draft train rolling just like the Pets did for years. We can have extra picks and keep pushing one of our 1sts or 2nds out and gaining more capital the following year.

We can have our cake and eat it too. Of course it all comes down to whether or not we can pick up the right players in the draft. Picks like Parker, Harris, Jordan, Odrick, Allen, and Ginn aren’t going to get us anywhere, lol.

We could pick at say 7 and 25.

  75. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

If you look at Houston’s schedule, and we must since we are getting half our rebuild starters from them, they should sweep titans and colts and split with jags to go 5-6 in the div.
They have a pretty tough general sched, with TB and Denver as wins after the bye and Ravens and Patsies as losses. So that’s 2-2.

Before the bye they have tough road games against NO, KC, and the chargers, while bringing in the panthers, raiders, and falcons. Let’s they split those too.

That gives them 10-6 & the division champ unless Jax kills it.

Well someone mentioned Couch yesterday, so now we have a Davenport

  77. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Davenport was the name of a series of sofas made by the Massachusetts furniture manufacturer A. H. Davenport and Company, now defunct. Due to the popularity of the furniture at the time, the name davenport became a genericized trademark. Wikipedia

        so sorry sir
I actually know the term quite well, as i had an interior design business for a number of years. i was just being a wise ass, which is something i have never been good at.

I apologize for seeming to have been making a national slur.

        Your pun was perfect.

  78. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

So now we have only 3 OT’s and 3 DT’s on the 53 man roster. I figured there would be some more roster churning but this is getting crazy. None of these new guys know our systems/playbooks and we are a week away from starting the season.

The Miami Dolphins today announced they have been awarded the following players off waivers: linebacker Trent Harris, linebacker Deon Lacey, defensive end Avery Moss, safety Steven Parker and cornerback Ken Webster. The Dolphins waived the following players: linebacker Terrill Hanks, safety Montre Hartage, tight end Chris Myarick, tackle Zach Sterup and defensive tackle Adolphus Washington.

    dangit
I really wanted to keep Myarick.
Oh well losing a UDFA TE is not the end of the world.
We should put him on the PS for sure.

Naples: no National Slur at all. Just how ya asked I thought I had swung and missed ..

  82. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

I thought I recognized his name:
We seem to like CFL LB ..
He signed with the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos on February 26, 2014.[3] Lacey made an immediate impact with the Eskimos on special teams and increasingly became an important member of their starting defensive unit. In three years with the Eskimos, Lacey played in all 54 games, racking up 144 defensive tackles, 68 special teams tackles, 7 sacks, 3 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles and 1 touchdown.

  83. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Flo said he was gonna keep the best 53 regardless of position
    ————————————-
Naples, I understand that but how do they know these additions are better than what we had. They haven’t practiced 1 day with us. Our first game is a week away and about 1/4 of the team now doesn’t know the playbook.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I totally agree with you on that … especially our new LT.

However, all those RBs have been with us ever since OTAs,
so they’re good to go. QBs too.

  84. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Again, excellent trade. Tunsil is a good young player but the Texans overpaid.

I am not a Tua fan….especially if he takes a #1 pick. I could see us just playing it out next year. If a QB they like falls to them wherever we are picking, they could take him. If not, just play the draft either taking the BPA or trading back and getting more draft picks. This could lead to us having a whole bunch of picks in 2021 and going after Lawrence. I would not be surprised at all if this FO has already set a 2-3 year plan and are making moves based on that long range plan. If Rosen comes in and plays great, maybe you just go with him…or you use him in trades if you want to go another direction. By getting these drafts picks, they’ve given themselves lots of options.

  85. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I like Lacey. We may be building the best ST units in the league. Lol

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

It does seem that we value ST players ..
lots of the trades are ST aces.. and our ST already looked good and really disciplined in the PS ..

Also seems this staff knows how to coach up Tackling.. very few whiffs or yards after contact from what I saw

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

yeah and he is a good quick twitch edge rusher LB guy too

My friend Jim who was at the Fest last year with his son Justin know about Chandler Cox from High School football. Justin played against him, said he was a beast back then playing for Apopka. Says he’s crazy [but in a good way nom sayin’].

  87. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

I never believed we were tanking until now. There is no way they can expect to win a game until at least after the bye week when the new players finally learn the playbook. We are starting the season with 2 RT’s (1 rookie) and another OT who doesn’t know the playbook and only 6 DL to chase Lamar Jackson around all game. Ryan Fitzpatrick will be meeting with his attorney this week to update his will. Fitz will probably come out and play like he did in PS3 (going through the motions/didn’t want to be out there) when Rosen got the start.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Ravens D is not the usual terrifying thing it usually is.
If Fitz can hit some quick slants to Wilson and Grant,
they might take one to the house.

We also have some nice size out there on the edges with Preston, Hurns,
and that other guy who soetimes plays for us.

We could beat Baltimore 20-16 in the heat.

  88. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Toba/naples,
This team has had terrible depth for a long, long time. They seem to be addressing that issue. It’s hard to predict anything yet, since we haven’t even played a game. I like how they’re going about their business so far.

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Agreed , they seem to be building a very Tough on both sides, Run 1st , throwback style team ..

Lol, so by trading our Very Good LT, the drop off from our new starter to his back up will not be as large 🤔🤡.. kinda makes more sense now 🤯

  89. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Randy, Fromm may be available in the middle of the 1st round. Some teams will balk at his arm strength. I would be real happy with him. Dude is Pennington 5.0. He is very accurate, the best game manager and the best at reading defenses pre-snap in next years draft.
