Miami Dolphins trade LT Laremy Tunsil and WR Kenny Stills to Texans!

OK, this is a shocker, no two ways about it! In addition to trading away our cornerstone LT, we also traded away controversial WR Kenny Stills (BUH-bye) and future draft picks, a 2020 4th RD pick and a 2021 6th RD pick. What do we get in return for all of this??? TWO first RD picks, a 2020 1st RD and a 2021 1st RD pick and 2021 2nd RD pick as well. and two players, special teamer DB Johnson Bademosi and OT Julie’n Davenport.

I don’t even know how to digest all this to be honest. Things look great for the future, although now we have to find a legitimate LT which will probably require a high pick. I realize we have now have 2 first RD picks in both next year’s draft and also in 2021, but now the rebuild seems to be full on, and it’s going to require some patience here. While the future looks promising, I have my doubts about how competitive our team will be with a poor offensive line.

I understand well that no player is “untradeable”. There is a value for everything, and GM Chris Grier felt he got more value than he could turn down for his best OL and really the cornerstone of our offensive line, then he did the right thing. Time will tell, because Laremy Tunsil is a great tackle, he was an excellent pass protector as well as a demon in the run game. Kenny Stills was a deep threat WR who has been making big plays for us since he got here, but in limited quantities. He probably should have been more during his tenure here, and his decision to speak up against Dolphins owner Steve Ross probably led to him being a part of this trade as well..

What I guess we all have to realize is that this year is definitely compromised. I would say we all had some doubts about our O-line with Laremy Tunsil, so those doubts just intensified w/o him. Is Zach Sterup our LT? Do our QB’s routinely get “Julienned” if newly acquired OT Julie’n Davenport is playing LT? Do we pick up another LT off the cut scrap heap? LG Michael Deiter’s job just got a whole lot more difficult, wouldn’t you think?

Next year’s draft should be exciting for us, but watching this season, at least for me at this moment, looks to be a scary prospect. I think we’re putting an inferior product on the field on offense, with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick starting behind what appears to be a very shaky O-line. We heard rumors about a locker room revolt if Laremy Tunsil was traded, I suppose we’ll see if that’s true or not. I hope it’s not, because things may tough enough for this team this season without that.

a team has to spend 89% of the cap over a four-year period. so saying Ross is cheap is not correct

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah but what about the Legos

    • thats wrong Orob

dead money also counts against the cap, but not the payroll

dead money brings cap compliance, but dead money is not coming from current payrolls, its just a number factored in of the pro rated signing bonuses from previous years

payroll is what it is, You dont get to spin it anymore than anyone else does
dolphins have the extreme cheapest payroll, and discussing it, does NOT change it

numbers do NOt lie, they show Ross wants the cheapest payroll, and even once he got it, he still kept going cheaper and cheaper, SMH

      it is what it is

now Flores has to convince everyone that fitz won, we arent tanking, etc

Jones is gone the second someone’s strong safety goes down this season, team gets desperate, and Dolphins can therefore get decent value for him. Unfortunately strong safeties don’t garner a ton of value these days. They are at least probably hoping for something more than a bag of stale chips in return. All of the above goes for Drake as well. And dare I say the same for X (although only gone if stupid crazy compensation is offered). They aren’t just cutting the fat, they are cutting right to the bone. The 2019 Dolphins Labor Day fire sale! Now extended through ̶S̶e̶p̶t̶e̶m̶b̶e̶r̶ ̶ ̶O̶c̶t̶o̶b̶e̶r̶ ̶ ̶N̶o̶v̶e̶m̶b̶e̶r̶ December!

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

STEVE: WE are NOT tanking. Ross just naturally finds and hires FO, Coaches, and GM’s who are not very good at their jobs.

  43. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OD – We haven’t been anywhere near elite when we spent every penny of the cap money, so why fret we when we purge the roster of all those underachieving players? You can’t have to both ways, know what I mean? We weren’t 2-3 players away with our current roster, more like 10 or more, so now we’ve cleared out the roster, armed ourselves with a bevy of picks in the next couple of drafts and we’ll see if we can reshape the team the right way

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

MIKE E: You missed my point. WE WERE ELITE when the Fins & Fish were winning titles. THEN, when the owners of these two previously successful franchises decided to focus on the facility (NOT the team) that’s when we went to shit. I TRULY BELIEVE Ross could spend MORE MONEY than any other NFL owner and still produce a crappy team. That’s why the “Ross being a cheapskate” proponents are dead wrong. He’s just a naturally UNgifted owner when it comes to key hires.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I have to disagree. There are only so many coaches and such in the NFL, same goes for execs. How fast did Adam Gase get picked up once we fired him? I know you’re going to tell me it was the Jets, but all these guys are recycled. Look at Spielman in Minnesota. He wasn’t very good here in MIA but he goes to Minnesota and does well. Same could be said for Jeff Ireland. Maybe we had the right guys at the wrong time. Hopefully we have Flores at the right time, and Grier too, and we take off from here. That’s all we can do. It’s pointless to lament about the owner, he hires the same guys every other team in the NFL hires. I mean if it makes you feel better, carry on, I just think your anger is aimed at the wrong person.

Not sure I should go here but….David revealed a way that an intensely penurious owner (think Oakland A’s type ownership) could game the Cap floor rules by using dead cap to help him get to the 89% level he’s required to get to.

You sign backloaded contracts with the intention of cutting them and creating dead cap money that counts against the floor in the back halves of those contracts. This serves to create a scenario where he can comply with the cap minimum without writing a paycheck.

But reality check: He’s not doing that. He paid Suh 60M of that contract before it was all said and done. You’d have to be able to save 10m a year for 6 years in payroll to make that money up (hint, Suh’s dead cap hit was 22.2M Total). Then you’ve broken even….after 5 years!!!!!!! (3 for Suh’s playing years, 2 for his dead cap duration).

No, he expects much more robust returns then that with his billion dollar toy.

I get that there’s people who hate Ross, I’m not particularly thrilled with him, but what’s happening this year is “getting out of cap hell”. There will be plenty of money spent on this team in a couple years when some of the as of yet undrafted talent needs to get paid…and if the plan goes accordingly, we’ll have seen several years of success with the cupboard full for several more years of success.

Patience is back, like it or not, but I’m excited about all these draft picks and watching this season with no other objective then to develop talent and try to find a few diamonds in the rough.

    ———–

This is correct. Dead money comes from bonus money.

When you sign a player he gets a salary year 1 usually some small amount, maybe $1M, and a bonus let’s say $20M, so paid out money for year one is $21M, but maybe the cap hit is only $6M, with the other $15M, $5M per year for the next 3 years counting against the cap. If the player is released or traded after say year 2, the team is on the hook for $10M in dead cap, all counting against year 3s cap, unless the team cuts/trades post June 1st.

There’s no such thing as trying to cheat the 89% by back loading. Back loaded means lots of money due late in the contract, usually 3rd and 4th years, with the key being money due later.

If the money isn’t paid later it doesn’t count.

The contract part of dead money is when let’s say $30M is guaranteed, and its year 3 of 4 and the player is released , but only $20M has been paid, so $10M needs to be paid and it would count in year 3 as dead money against the cap.

I know it’s not the popular narrative locally and nationally, but we do have some nice young talent on this team. It’s not a team made up of just UDFAs and scrap heap players. I’m rooting for us to win too many games so we don’t get the tanking top two picks. 🙂

Won’t that be fun watching some fans and the media go f’n crazy! LOL

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Correct, and it’s not even close to being scrap players. The players left are multi dimensional on D and system fit on O.

Flores says they aren’t tanking, because he’s going to take hisins and beat yourins, because hisins will have scheme help and the TNT advantage and play like a team. At least that’s what he’s hoping for.

The OL only got weaker at LT, but stronger everywhere else, so if you believe the line is only as good as its weakest link, the the group of OL got better.

  72. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This is a good link about where our 2020 draft stands. It does not include the speculated 3rd and 5th rd comp picks for Ja’Wuan James and Cam Wake.

    https://gbnreport.com/future-traded-picks/

  73. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Hyde doesn’t know the definition of tanking, if he did he wouldn’t be spewing BS. Rebuild and tank are not the same thing. Tanking is what the Colts did in suck for Luck, and once the top pick was secured they started playing lights out.

Rebuild is what we’re doing by getting rid of high priced players that are either past their prime or don’t fit the scheme or just players in general that don’t fit the scheme. On D that’s one trick ponies.

  74. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We targeted Trey Flowers in FA and tried to trade for Jadeveon Clowney. Anyone else think we won’t do the same in FA and/or the draft next year? We have HC who believes in playing good defense. We’ll have a boat load of cap space and a plethora of nice draft picks next year. For all you offseason personnel types, you’re going to get your Christmas. LOL

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The Belicheat way is always having extra picks available, in case you need to use one at a spot like C, when yours is lost for the year, Flores is no different.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What a lot of people don’t take into account enough is that HC Flores, DC Graham and OC O’Shea all coached under Belichick for a decade or more. They know what winning looks like.

So instead of the narrative being Miami Dolphins trying to change the culture of mediocrity, it’s now tanking. A real naive and amateurish way to look at it.

  75. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Moving onto the Ravens game…. I see Baker and Minkah shadowing Lamar Jackson often. They have the speed and physicality to chase and get him down. I see us attacking him with multiple stunts and blitzes trying to force him into mistakes. Just sitting back against a QB like this is allowing him to be comfortable.

But to do that, we have to be solid against the run.

I think our offense will be more of a work in progress. It’s probably going to take some time.

  78. I think Tunsil moving on was the straw that broke the camels back

Everyone knows the Fins are rebuilding, but who knows Why a young and talented LT wouldn’t be an important part of a rebuild?

Tunsil should still be here IMO, he was the best LT we had in decades, his salary wasn’t high, this move makes no sense really

Yes we have picks, but now we have to hope someone smokes a bong and falls to us like Tunsil did, or get lucky and find a Tunsil some other way

There is no guarantees we will find another Tunsil with these picks, I’m still SMH on the Tunsil trade

This team has been known to blow through picks with little to show for it, and we already had a great pick on the roster

This is a gamble, if we win, we find another Tunsil, if we lose, we get another turnstile

Buy why gamble at LT when we had tons of other issues? We don’t like stability at LT on a rookie contract for the rebuild? Guess not
Truly no one is safe here, Howard could be next

    • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

It’s not much of a gamble. We got 2 #1s for him. That’s more rebuilding ammunition then one single player who’s going to demand the largest LT contract in history in 2 years…if not sooner (houston will extend/re-up him this season or next offseason if I were to guess)

      • Grier only has a 50 percent success rate on top picks, so unless he drafts much better, we didn’t gain anything

What if Grier picks another Harris and Parker? Did the extra picks help?

What are we going to do with the picks? Go for mediocre players that won’t ever earn a huge check someday? Go for talent, like we had? We didn’t get ahead in this deal, and gambled our future on the hopes that Grier will nail every single pick, even though he never has done that

      • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

Small sample size and that’s putting it mildly. What’s one good young player on a team that doesn’t make the playoffs anyway? A building block. 1st round picks are also building blocks but you can choose whichever shaped block you want instead of only having one shape to choose from.

Here’s what we’ll do with the picks: Draft young studs that can be the future of this team in 2 years at manageable salaires when Tunsil will be signing a 90 million dollar contract.

  79. For game one, I’m going to predict Ravens 24, Ross interns and volunteers, 3

  80. Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

I’m going to say this. I never once read anyone on this blog say Tunsil was the best LT in the game. The only way to say we made a bad deal on that trade is to assert that he is IMO, because we got a King’s ransom.

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

      ^

    • Jahn, just curious, Do You feel the Dolphins can easily replace Tunsil next year with only using one pick?

      • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

well, we found him with one pick didn’t we? I think you’re hyper focusing on the idea we must get an exactly as good or better LT with one of those picks, when we might not even draft an LT at all and instead use cap space to sign a veteran after we’ve drafted/procured a franchise QB.

      • We did get lucky on Tunsil yes, who knows.
I do think we have to try for another top quality LT, or maybe RT if we draft Tua

and a guard or two as well would be very helpful
There are some quality OL in the upcoming draft, and hopefully We get 2 or 3

  81. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Son, Ian Book looked a little “Meh” last night. Decision making and accuracy was a bit off.

  82. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I never said Tunsil was the best LT, but I thought he was close to a top 10 LT. He was head and shoulders better than anyone else on that line. It’s just a surprising trade. Let’s be realistic, it’s harder to win with a poor OL, and it may have not been that great with him here, now it’s really not looking promising. It’s clear we’re looking more towards next year and beyond than we are at this year. Every player has a price, and I guess we got what we needed for him. but it wasn’t two first rounders and a 2nd, that was in exchange for Tunsil, Stills, our 4th RD pick in 2020 and our 6th RD pick in 2021. Just trying to keep it fair.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

      Except I didn’t even tout the 2nd rounder, I understated when I said 2 #1s.

Stills was worthless in almost any other scenario. He’s a journeyman WR at this point with some minor personality clashes with the owner. The point value of the 2020 4th and 2021 6th pale in comparison to the value of the 2 #1s and the 2nd.

Only being straight with you, the only surprise I had with that trade was how much they gave up. When I read Mando’s report of a locker room rebellion my visceral reaction was: Then you trade or cut every single one of the malcontents.

This year was not a promising one to start with. What could we realistically hope for? 8-8 again? That would’ve been pie in the sky according to Vegas.

No thanks, we changed coaches again, may as well get on board with the new plan and enjoy the process.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think we got good value in the trade. Regardless, it doesn’t help us at all this season. I’m well aware what Stills is/was, he wasn’t long to be here this season after he called Ross out. I’m good with the trade, not knocking it, but realistically it hurts us from being competitive this season. That’s all

  83. What’s an obvious loss on Tunsil is we don’t have his services in 2019, when he was quite affordable.

We can’t draft til next year, so the picks can’t help us this year either

And the most concerning part, Tunsil protected the QB blindside, if we lost Rosen because we can’t block his blindside, was the Tunsil deal still a good one?
It’s a long season to go , and we don’t have a LT worth a shit, this is a multi faceted gamble

If Everything works perfectly, then we get ahead, if any part of it isn’t perfect, then we didnt

    • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

His services weren’t going to change the fact that we’re not a playoff team. It doesn’t take perfection for this trade to workout, you just keep saying it does.

Previous rank: No. 32 by Dan Hanzus

The Dolphins got a lot worse over the weekend — but that was part of the plan. The idea here is that a complete teardown in the short-term allows this once-proud franchise to return to prominence in the 2020s. The Fins put their youth movement into over drive — trading away standout left tackle Laremy Tunsil, leading receiver Kenny Stills, and former starting linebacker Kiko Alonso. According to ESPN, Miami will enter Week 1 with 30 players on the roster who are 25 years or under, including 13 rookies. Will the young players remaining on the roster form a core? And can the Dolphins’ front office be trusted with an embarrassment of draft riches? Starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is like the substitute teacher in charge of a class that knows he’s not around for long.

  86. I’m only discussing what ifs, and this could backfire

But the flip side is, if we don’t have any QB injuries, and Grier makes some incredible picks, which he has done before, the team could be in a position to get several quality pieces to our puzzle, and these new players become the cornerstones of a team that can compete a championship

The long term potential is enormous, if we can shoulder some short term pain, ultimately I am ok with the Tunsil trade, just sad to see him go. The reason I’m ok, is now we have a decent chance to really build the shit out of this team, it’s up to Grier and co to get the right guys.

The 2020 draft will be the most exciting draft for the Dolphins in a very long time, I wish it was now, lol

Let’s face it, it could be a tough year, but this will also help us by giving us higher positioning for the selections

I’m not fond of sacrificing 2019 for the future, but I’m not in control of it either.

Some say trust the process, sounds ok to Me, what else do We have?
Trust the process, build a Championship

We were not going to win a SB with just Tunsil, we need a lot more players and this gives us an opportunity

  87. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

My rebuttal to Hanzus, although i no longer think rating us 32 is flat out wrong, as I did last month.

Substitute teachers are like Rocky. No one gives them any respect, but they don’t have anything to lose. Fitz can bring the magic; he’s in the NFL record books for multiple immense passing games.
He can scramble, he’s not a statue-type QB, he can throw on the run, he’s smart and experienced, so you can’t fool him very often at the LoS. Fitz will mitigate some of the OL problems.

Fitz is not the criterion for predicting this team to go winless.

  88. Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

    Mike E,

I totally hear you on that last post, and I agree. I understand that watching this season got more difficult with that trade, but, and this is to my discredit: I have been watching fewer dolphin’s games the last couple of years because I simply don’t want to spend my money and time being frustrated every single weekend. I’ve been making it a point to record games and instead go out and do something, go to the beach (mostly) hike, spend time with the family etc…so truth be told, my viewing enjoyment of this coming season isn’t as impacted as yours might be. I feel for you on that front, and can understand if you’re a little disappointed by it.

I am hopeful that maybe that can all change as early as next year for all of us. Cheers buddy.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Cheers man. Actually, I think we got great value in the trade, I can’t wait for that draft! This season, eh, I can wait. 😉

    • That’s a Good balance, Dolphins are a part of our life, but they aren’t our life

      Life comes first

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Other than the Jax game, we had QBs succeed under duress, so no reason to think that will change.

The scheme will go a long way to helping out, but also the leadership Fitz brings. That’s why he’s starting, it was something Flores mentioned during OTAs.

    • TryPod's avatar TryPod says:

I’ve taken a similar approach these last 2-3 years ( not making it a point to watch every game or follow media coverage of the team) for very similar reasons. As I’ve also intimated in the past, I don’t really enjoy the game as-a-whole as much as I did in my more youthful days. Various reasons why this is likely so, but what’s usually most apparent to me is that I just don’t relate to the players anymore (not a knock-their time is now, mine has passed). I’m not hip-hop, tatted-up, social media-driven. I just can’t get “into” their livestyles, not do I have any interest in doing so. Again, this is not me shading any of them.

  89. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

also I would say to Hanzus that he has not studied the Dolphins actual roster build from the perspective of what was wrong with us last year. We had to change out some players.

Kiko will win you a couple with his plus athleticism, but he will lose you a couple with his idiocy.
So if he got us to 7-9, we’re still at 7-9 with steady eddy Biegle and hyperdog Eguavoen in there instead. Baker is better than he was last year. No reason to rate us 32 based on LBs.

We lost our top 2 WRs, but Amendola and Stills were only mediocre in stats and only got us 7 wins.
We did not have a high-scoring offense, and we did not trade away all of our speed or production at WR. It’s a wash in the stat line and an improvement in twitter and on the sideline. We are not 5-6 games worse without Stills and Amendola.

We had the worst run D in the NFL last year (I think) , so losing Akeem and Vince Taylor is nothing.
We should be raised in predictions because of improving in the DL with a first round draft pick and a big hoss NT to eat the double teams. So maybe 2 Ws more due to better run-stuffing.

Getting 15 years younger at LS is not a criterion for rating us 32. No one cares. We can still have Denny over for barbecue if you love him as a friend, but 41 y/o players often need to retire before they lose a game for you. Better now than after an excruciating loss and trying to find a LS in week 9.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We got more organized, and it showed in preseason.

The D already looks better with Baker running the show, an actual FS playing FS, and the confusing looks.

The ? is on the OL. I think we got better overall with the moves made after cutdown, but worse at LT. The skill positions look to be much better. The wildcard may be Laird and his great vision getting us 4 yards on 1st down (ORob should like it).

We still can be better than last year, as long as we can score, again that’s on the OL.

When teams are really bad they tend to have players freelance, you won’t see that in 2019, a benefit of having young players.

This just doesn’t have the feel of a 1-15 team.

  94. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So that leaves the loss of Tunsil. Let’s say he was the best LT in the NFL. (He’s not.) He’s one player. One position. We traded him for a starting LT that we can plug in there. We aren’t scrounging the waiver wire nor promoting a depth player in over his head. (PS: We also picked up two very good depth players in the OL where we really needed them, proven NFL players.)

The loss of Tunsil might cost us 2 games, but it will not send us plummeting to oblivion. Houston did ok last year while using the guy we got in the trade.

There is a key to our season that Hanzus (and most everybody) is overlooking. It’s coaching.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

After watching our preseason games I felt like that was true for the first time since the JJ days.

Naples i had been typing up something very similar i dont see us at a much worse place than before. It looks like our depth is deeper even if our top is more shallow. I dont think we lost anyone other than Tunsil that we will really feel the effects.

What we lost from last year is a bunch of guys playing out of position.

  97. D's avatar D says:

Mikey, Still swas in the way of players like Grant and Willimas, both seem to play with more zeal than Stills. Stills like Jahn said was a slightly better than journeyman status player. What he had was elite sped to go with decent size, but thats pretty common these days. I dont feel like the loss of Stills with the chance to have Grant emerge a a receiver will be a net loss. I definitely think that Williams if going top Stills contribution, maybe even this year. Out with the old and malcontent in with the new and hungry.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

C’mon man, how long have you been on this blog? You know I never really cared for Stills as a player. He’s OK, he was good at occasionally getting open deep, but was never really much more than that. I liked what he did with the community trying to help bring police and local leaders together, but I will never lament losing him as a WR. Once he opened his mouth about Ross and Trump I knew his days were numbered, and rightly so
