Miami Dolphins trade LT Laremy Tunsil and WR Kenny Stills to Texans!

OK, this is a shocker, no two ways about it! In addition to trading away our cornerstone LT, we also traded away controversial WR Kenny Stills (BUH-bye) and future draft picks, a 2020 4th RD pick and a 2021 6th RD pick. What do we get in return for all of this??? TWO first RD picks, a 2020 1st RD and a 2021 1st RD pick and 2021 2nd RD pick as well. and two players, special teamer DB Johnson Bademosi and OT Julie’n Davenport.

I don’t even know how to digest all this to be honest. Things look great for the future, although now we have to find a legitimate LT which will probably require a high pick. I realize we have now have 2 first RD picks in both next year’s draft and also in 2021, but now the rebuild seems to be full on, and it’s going to require some patience here. While the future looks promising, I have my doubts about how competitive our team will be with a poor offensive line.

I understand well that no player is “untradeable”. There is a value for everything, and GM Chris Grier felt he got more value than he could turn down for his best OL and really the cornerstone of our offensive line, then he did the right thing. Time will tell, because Laremy Tunsil is a great tackle, he was an excellent pass protector as well as a demon in the run game. Kenny Stills was a deep threat WR who has been making big plays for us since he got here, but in limited quantities. He probably should have been more during his tenure here, and his decision to speak up against Dolphins owner Steve Ross probably led to him being a part of this trade as well..

What I guess we all have to realize is that this year is definitely compromised. I would say we all had some doubts about our O-line with Laremy Tunsil, so those doubts just intensified w/o him. Is Zach Sterup our LT? Do our QB’s routinely get “Julienned” if newly acquired OT Julie’n Davenport is playing LT? Do we pick up another LT off the cut scrap heap? LG Michael Deiter’s job just got a whole lot more difficult, wouldn’t you think?

Next year’s draft should be exciting for us, but watching this season, at least for me at this moment, looks to be a scary prospect. I think we’re putting an inferior product on the field on offense, with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick starting behind what appears to be a very shaky O-line. We heard rumors about a locker room revolt if Laremy Tunsil was traded, I suppose we’ll see if that’s true or not. I hope it’s not, because things may tough enough for this team this season without that.

Personally, I really enjoy watching the process of building a team. Unfortunately, we have been doing it in a half-assed manner for years. I’m kinda glad to see it being done in, what I consider, the right way. Now, the next step is actually seeing the discipline, structure and accountability on the field that these coaches keep preaching. I’m looking forward to seeing how Flores does.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Whether it is the right way or not remains to be seen…. but it sure is in a big way. And thing about all those high draft picks is that they will keep the cap low. The rise could be fairly quick if they hit it in the right way.

  3. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

If you want to predict us like Hanzus did,
and you don’t talk about coaching, then your prediction is invalid.

Put aside the factor of firing a leader with wild-eyes and replacing him with a guy with a menacing glare for a minute
(And that is really not a small thing when being a general of fighting men)
(see Don Shula, Vince Lombardi, Bill Bellichick, Chuck Noll, etc. etc.)

We have a vastly superior DC and OC. (We didn’t even have a real OC the last 3 years. Quick, what were their names? and pedigree?) Our DC last year can’t even get a real job in the NFL.

And our HC is a real HC. I saw several times in the preseason where Flo made HC decisions that positively impacted our W-L while last year I noticed Gase playing with his tablet while shit happened on the field and no one intervened.

Last thing to bore you guys with,
in the aftermath of the cuts and trades,
we have made real strides toward putting the right guys in so as to form a cohesive whole.

A very wise man once told me that it’s not really about getting the best guys on the bus,
it’s about getting the right guys on the bus.

if some players fit one scheme and players right next to them fit another,
then your jigsaw puzzle never makes a pretty picture. It’s always a mess,
and in football, winning coaches find the gaps and soft spots in your mess real fast.

That is why we had so many 3 and outs and so many times we gave up 3rd and long conversions.
We’d have 8 or 9 guys in position, and the other coaches would exploit the other 2-3.

This is the real meaning of “Do you job.” Which is how our HC, OC, and DC are all trained.

  5. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’ve said it simply before, but the only way an owner spends less than the cap is if they do not carry over left over cap at end of year. Otherwise those cap dollars are real dollars spent one way or the other. And don’t think we have to worry about Ross hording money this season to pay the loan for the improvements on Hard Rock. He’s as rich as they come.

2019 — we shock the league by going 9-7 and slipping into the play-offs where we steal a game and Flo wins CoY, or at least some votes.
2020 — we go 11-5 and win 2 playoff games
2021 — we go 13-3 and make the SB
and the new dynasty is on.

  10. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

our OL problems in the past had a lot to do with scheme drake and the QB play, Gore didn’t seem to have a problem producing, you can’t hold the ball forever and when tanny got sacked it was the OL’s fault, or if Drake got stuffed for a loss it was the OLs fault.
Gases offensive scheme was flawed as well as his defensive scheme which reflects on the OL as well having to play catch up and being offensively predictable.

the right scheme discipline and QB makes that same OL look great!

as for the two #1s & the #2 we got for tunsil, i’m sure grier and co will parlay some of those picks into more early picks down the road.

  11. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    stanger,
Yep, that’s why I said none of it matters unless we see it on the field. I do think a rebuild needs to start from the ground up. If you don’t upgrade or build your base, your foundation, you won’t have stability. Whether or not it works is still on the players, but I like the process so far.

We had a top five INT rate, and we still have all those guys
except TJ, who was replaced with a real FS.
plus Rowe is an upgrade at CB.

He is just now at the brink of fully recovering.

If Flo and Graham (DC) can coach him up
and get Nkemdeche up to his athletic potential,
we could have 2 guys who can destroy blocking.

They both have 1st round talent; it’s just their mind that’s not right.

It really depends on the player, some can mke the transition and some cant. I guess to go along with the right handed, left handed analogy, you have some that are ambidextrous to varying degrees and same is true for swapping spots on the OL. Some can, some cant and some are somewhere in between.

Rob, thanks for the golf tip the other day! I went out and tried to apply with some success. Something I should have done on the range but oh well. Went out with a 38 but came in with a 45. I over applied your tip and tried to really nut one over some traps and ended up duck hooking it into Bayou Grande. Hit 3 off tee right into fairway trap. Hit fat coming out of trap. Chili dipped my wedge and so on. That was on #17. Thought I was going to shoot in the 70’s. Dammit! Gotta love this game. LOL

Who did we cut to pick up Crawford. I looked him up and the GB writers said he is a ST contributor and was on the 53, before BJ Goodson was traded to the Pack from NYG. Looks like he has hybrid Defensive skills playing primarily as a pass rusher LB.

  41. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The new guy (newest guy) James Crawford just got cut by the Packers after making their 53. We put in waiver request for him seconds later and were awarded today.

  42. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Needham is very athletic, which of course you need at CB.

    ———————————————
Isnt he supposed to be one of the better OC’s in the league?

  44. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Jesse played LT a few plays in one game when Tunsil was banged up last year.

  45. New Age's avatar New Age says:

The only thing that helps the tanking narrative is the constant cutting and shuffling of players. Going devil’s advocate, why would you jettison many of your vets right before the opener? Why would you look for detritus for your starting OL the week before the season starts or cut Orchard during the week of your first game? Who really gets up to speed in a new system in less than a week? Especially the young players which is the vast majority of guys here now? I would think someone could see that Orchard just wasn’t good enough before this week.

I don’t mind the Tunsil trade too much but I think he’ll be a top 5-6 LT by the time we will supposedly start winning again. And while I’m sure he wants to be the top paid LT(and will be in Houston), what exactly are we saving all this money for except to acquire top players? The best time to have an elite, expensive set of OL is when your QB is still on his rookie contract. As we’ve seen with Luck Watson, and Prescott, you need talented OL for your young QB.

It will be interesting to see how the next two drafts go but it will be incredibly hard for this team to go past 3-4 wins this year based off the turnover. I really like this defense though. It’s already exciting to watch. It may be good enough to even sneak a few more wins out.

    • agreed the timing sucks, which is yet another thing to consider in the are they tanking or not question
they are FO tanking, and timing it to produce the most amount of pain possible for the coaches and remaining players
its shocking to see a team intentionally implode, and time it for maximum effect too

  46. we will have alot of OL penalties and some snap issues, gonna be a tough year

  47. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    D,
No, Jones is not seen that way. i’d bring him in for a look though. It may have been a numbers things more than anything. Jones has some game. Maybe a solid backup.

  48. Orchard wasnt a scheme fit

the scheme is tank with NFL minimum wage players plus a few left overs

  49. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Maybe we can do this:

It’s not so much about finding one guy to play one spot. Even past groups I’ve worked with. It’s more about getting good players to play well together. Not just getting good players to play good. If they play individually, we’re not going to get anything accomplished. We just have to find the right mix and the right combination. We’ve been through that before.

Dave DeGuglielmo Wants O-Line To Be Tough, Smart
    D5A_9441p
    Alain Poupart
    LEAD WRITER

Dave DeGuglielmo’s third stint with the Miami Dolphins is still in its infancy, but it already has been quite interesting.

It’s going to get a lot more interesting starting Sunday with the start of the regular season and the challenge of getting a lot of moving parts ready to face the Baltimore Ravens and what usually is one of the top defenses in the NFL.

But if you think for a second DeGuglielmo is fazed by the task at hand, think again.

“In most NFL teams, there’s going to be some change every week,” DeGuglielmo said Tuesday when every Dolphins assistant coach addressed the media. “Sometimes there’s a little bit more change, sometimes a little less change. That’s week to week in every team. Gone are the days where five guys play the same five spots for an entire 16 games. I haven’t seen it in a long time.

“That’s part of the process. And we teach conceptually. We cross-train guys. To be honest with you, I’d like to have every guy on the line be able to snap a football. Why? Well, because you never know. You never know what’s going to be needed for a game, to finish a game or to play a game, and you never know who the best guy is going to be until you give it a try, give it a whirl.”

In addition to cutting players to get down to the NFL-mandated roster limit of 53, the Dolphins made several additional moves along the offensive line since they closed out their preseason with a victory against the New Orleans Saints.

Guard Danny Isidora, guard/center Evan Boehm and tackle Julien Davenport all were acquired via trade, and the team gave up starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil to acquired three premium draft picks in a trade with the Houston Texans.

Perhaps the biggest priority item in the coming days will be deciding on a new starting left tackle, with moving Jesse Davis over from right tackle surfacing as a possibility.

DeGuglielmo said that’s just one of the options being considered and there ultimately could be a lot of movement up front.

“I didn’t play the game,” DeGuglielmo said. “I never played in the NFL. I’ve coached a lot of guys and done a lot of different things. It’s just a matter of seeing how the pieces play together.

“If you look back to New England in 2015, I rotated a whole bunch of guys — I didn’t, the head coach did — quite a bit. We had three rookies playing and we rotated a whole bunch of dudes. The one game, I believe, we had 12 or 13 different combinations for every drive we had. Every drive was different for the entire game against Jacksonville.”

David, when we were only like $4M under the cap in 2018 what did that say about Ross? You have to look at what the plan is. It’s all setup for phase 2 in 2020 when we’ll have a ton of cap space and draft capital to bring in more premium talent.

  59. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Tim,

I think it’s hard for many people because no one has really ever accomplished it in a timely fashion or with wild success. While many here have frequently said blow it up, I don’t think they meant to almost completely destroy the talent base. It looks difficult considering how much has to be done each year. By the time this year is out, how many future pieces will we have? Howard, Baker, Equeveon, Minka, Wilkins and a few others on D. Offense? Wilson, Grant, Ballage, Dieter, maybe Drake, Calhoun, and Rosen?

I see the plan but its’s risky as hell. Khan never saw the end of his plan. Sam Hinkie was also fired before it came to fruition and part of that is because neither showed positive end results. Khan might have went with the wrong QB instead of Mayfield. Maybe these plans need a John Dorsey level of talent when it’s actually pick time? Have the Sixers or Browns even accomplished anything besides lots of articles about them?

There’s strong reasons these things don;t work out. Fans don’t like paying for four months of garbage to get three nights of wow. Now add 2-4 years to that equation. Doesn’t sound like a money making endeavor. Either way, it should be interesting over the next few years. At least we won’t be average for a while. Change can be good.

  61. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

So was looking to sign Trey Flowers or trading for Clowney part of the tank narrative? How does that add up?
    —————–
Exactly. The way I see it, we have 3 metrics that our players must pass…

    1) Youth movement (Clowney is only 26 years old, check)
    2) Versatile/multi-positional (football intelligence is built-in to do this, Clowney checked this box)
    3) Team FIRST oriented players

It came out — at the last second — that Clowney didn’t want to play for us, so he didn’t check the box of “Team FIRST”. Thus, it was a win-win for all parties that the Clowney-Phins trade didn’t come to fruition.

But dammit, we ARE trying to get the right players. I’m with ya, Tim.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree mostly with what you said but I think with Clowney, he wanted to go to a contender, not a team in a rebuilding transition. If it was just about money, we would have been one of the teams who could have easily given him the contract he wanted in 2020.

As for Flowers, DET outbid us and he went to another familiar coach in Matt Patricia.

But no doubt we’re targeting edge rushers and are willing to invest in them. Who knows, maybe we still acquire a premium player, we have the cap to do it. If not so be it.

Oh my… a GM being given total control and his handpicked HC trying to bring in players that fit what they want to do even if it’s not always top shelf. Oh the horror!!! LOL

This has been a common practice since… well forever. LOL

  64. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What if Mando and Omar are right? I mean, isn’t it better to get the first pick in 2020? Wouldn’t that speed up the rebuild?

Or is it better to go 8-8, knowing what Flores is preaching works?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Are you sold on any of the QBs coming out in 2020. I’m not! I have not heard that there are any Peyton Manning or Andrew Luck type talents. Tua plays for a team that is so much better than most of their opponents he’s not really tested. Clemson made him look pretty average. He’s going to face defenses like that in the NFL more than he does at Alabama. Clemson sent 5 DL to the NFL in the draft this year, 3 in the 1st rd. Just saying!

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

        Tua is the real deal

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Getting the first pick doesn’t mean taking a QB. I think Rosen is as good as any of the 2020 QBs. I wouldn’t mind trading the #1overall pick, but I really don’t want to endure that 1-15 season.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I have my doubts. I’m still not sold on any of the QBs from last year either. The football world shoves these QBs down your throat. We’ll see.

    About the Ravens
They lost 4 huge pieces to their defense, and neither their WRs nor their RBs scare me.

Suggs has beaten us several games all by himself,
but he’s gone, and Mosley is also gone, plus that up and comer
Za’Darius Smith and Eric Weddle are also gone.

Their TEs scare me and the Pearl scares me.
    Tucker terrifies me.

If we contain him and make him a pocket passer, Lamar is just good, like B grade.

I’m reiterating my pick: MIA 20-16.
(If the new kid LS doesn’t blow it.)

For the people commenting on the timing of cutting players, its because this is the time you cut players and churn the rosters. It’s after the 4th week of Preseason and before the first game of regular season. Every other team is doing the same thing. Jettisoning people they don’t think are fits, and bringing in people who they think are. Whether they are the right moves can be debated, but we haven’t even played the first game of the season yet. Take a breath, gain some perspective, and let the season play out. We’ll find out soon enough if we are on the right path or not.

    Tim,

Just getting back but the talent mentioned is anyone who started the past few years that is no longer here. Were they good enough? Probably not. Did they fit Flores goal or were young enough? Doesn’t look that way. Were they NFL caliber starters that won some games? Sure. Isn’t that what a complete rebuild is about? Getting rid of anything that doesn’t fit no matter how talented?

Going past the conversation with Tim, the story that the Patriots win with no name dudes is complete fabrication. Bill just uses his talent better than anyone else. I hope Flores gets there but he will need talent to win in the NFL. ..just like Bill.

Did the Dolphins go from 1-15 to 11-5 in 2008? Until we see it we have no idea. We have never seen this current team play a real RS game. Go from there and then look for progress throughout the season. I get this feeling that people just don’t like the status of the team more so than how it’s being dealt with. This is where we are. The reset button was pushed folks! We knew this back in March.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      You are right.
And we do have some history with a first year coach making the playoffs!
No one knows how to game plan for us.
And there’s that “new coach euphoria” thing.

Some new coaches bomb, but i don’t see Flores as either disorganized or panicky.

  72. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

What if Fitz throws a dart to Grant or Wilson running full speed
on a slant, and he splits the first two DBs? That’s 6.
What if he hits Drake on a wheel route, and the DB is a step slow getting over?
    That’s 6.
What if Flo gets Fitz to the LoS nohuddle and he quicksnaps the DL
so that Ballage catches them flat-footed?
    That’s 6.
What if Grant catches a punt on a dead run and nobody blocks in the back?
    That’s 6.
These are not wishful thinking because of the speed. These have happened.

  80. Everyone knows the Dolphins are in rebuild mode, but this week wasn’t rebuild mode

Dolphins have brought in 10 players since their last preseason game less than a week ago

With that amount of roster churning we could exchange the entire team several times a year!

The level of roster churning doesn’t make sense from a rebuild point, we aren’t getting picks anymore,
the guys we are bringing in are extremely low quality and won’t likely stick
It’s just money saving moves that weaken the team, making it much easier to tank.

We can make koolaid excuses, but the reality is this team has very little talent to compete in the NFL anymore, and increasing the roster churning rate isn’t a great sign of rebuilding

I guess no worries, because if You don’t like the players this week, we can have 20 different players in a couple weeks, and we might like them
In a few more weeks we could swap out the other 32 and have a completely different team

Then we still have 11 more weeks to swap out the entire team 2 more times, unless we continue picking up the pace, then maybe we can change the entire roster over another time or two

Me and Mando agree on this. It’s the counter argument for people that still like the rebuild, still know we got great value, but also know we lost a top talent, Tunsil will probably be a top 5 LT within 3 years. Those don’t grow on trees. As OD can attest, we haven’t had a good OL in ages. LT is the most important position and Tunsil just turned 25 and could have been our LT for 10 years easily.

New Age – No one said NE wins with untalented players. Just that they are unknowns until they play. And the point, as you reiterated, was that Belichek takes the players he has and plays them to their talents in ways that compliment the players around them. No super stars, no egos. Team sport, team first.

Tunsil was a good LT. Maybe he becomes a top 5 LT. The questions become doe you need a top 5 LT to win and if not is having a top 5 LT worth more than 2 1st and a 2nd? I think the answers are no and no.
