Miami Dolphins trade LT Laremy Tunsil and WR Kenny Stills to Texans!

OK, this is a shocker, no two ways about it! In addition to trading away our cornerstone LT, we also traded away controversial WR Kenny Stills (BUH-bye) and future draft picks, a 2020 4th RD pick and a 2021 6th RD pick. What do we get in return for all of this??? TWO first RD picks, a 2020 1st RD and a 2021 1st RD pick and 2021 2nd RD pick as well. and two players, special teamer DB Johnson Bademosi and OT Julie’n Davenport.

I don’t even know how to digest all this to be honest. Things look great for the future, although now we have to find a legitimate LT which will probably require a high pick. I realize we have now have 2 first RD picks in both next year’s draft and also in 2021, but now the rebuild seems to be full on, and it’s going to require some patience here. While the future looks promising, I have my doubts about how competitive our team will be with a poor offensive line.

I understand well that no player is “untradeable”. There is a value for everything, and GM Chris Grier felt he got more value than he could turn down for his best OL and really the cornerstone of our offensive line, then he did the right thing. Time will tell, because Laremy Tunsil is a great tackle, he was an excellent pass protector as well as a demon in the run game. Kenny Stills was a deep threat WR who has been making big plays for us since he got here, but in limited quantities. He probably should have been more during his tenure here, and his decision to speak up against Dolphins owner Steve Ross probably led to him being a part of this trade as well..

What I guess we all have to realize is that this year is definitely compromised. I would say we all had some doubts about our O-line with Laremy Tunsil, so those doubts just intensified w/o him. Is Zach Sterup our LT? Do our QB’s routinely get “Julienned” if newly acquired OT Julie’n Davenport is playing LT? Do we pick up another LT off the cut scrap heap? LG Michael Deiter’s job just got a whole lot more difficult, wouldn’t you think?

Next year’s draft should be exciting for us, but watching this season, at least for me at this moment, looks to be a scary prospect. I think we’re putting an inferior product on the field on offense, with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick starting behind what appears to be a very shaky O-line. We heard rumors about a locker room revolt if Laremy Tunsil was traded, I suppose we’ll see if that’s true or not. I hope it’s not, because things may tough enough for this team this season without that.

With only 3 DT’s on the roster, I think our DL will be really gassed by the second half in the Miami heat against the Ravens.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

we only have ONE offensive tackle on the team other than the guy who lead the league at the OL Position in penalties and was 2nd place in allowed sacks last season. That guy is Prince a 7th rounder. Then we have guards playing Tackle and one tackle on the practice squad.

This could be a historically bad O line this year.

Good thing we only have Fitz and Rosen back there.

That is odd, but I expect to see some exotic looks, with less 4 down lineman than we saw in preseason.

Josh Rosen is the better player, but Ryan Fitzpatrick is the leader this young team needs right now. Fitzpatrick has experienced the highs and lows of football and the coaching staff is hoping he can keep things together in the beginning. It’s only a matter of time before Rosen takes over the starting job at some point during the season, but Fitzpatrick’s leadership should be a plus for the start of the season.

I mentioned basically the same thing yesterday. With the OL being what it is and all the player movement the past couple of days I really see no other choice than Fitz.

I think Calhoun is secure at his spot, for this year at least. Deiter is already our best OL, and id say Kilgore is probably the second best. The OL isnt spectacular but its serviceable. LT to me is the big ?, Davenport i think has the tools to be good but his rookie year was certainly rough. Have to see if he bounces back. If he does this OL isnt shit, its just a work in progress.

    From CBS’s 100 predictions for season 100:

These are all you need to read

    39. Dolphins finish with the worst record in the NFL
2019 is going to be a forgetful season for Brian Flores and the Miami Dolphins. They’ll be lucky to scratch off three wins on the year and will own the worst record in the league when it’s all said and done. The good news is they’ll be in prime position to take any of the elite quarterback prospects as they’ll own the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
    — via Sullivan

    40. Josh Rosen takes over as Dolphins’ starter following Week 5 bye
While he wasn’t bad in the preseason, Josh Rosen did not convince Dolphins head coach Brian Flores that he should be Miami’s Week 1 starter ahead of Ryan Fitzpatrick. With that in mind, Flores decided to start the season with Fitzpatrick, who should be more capable than Rosen when it comes to navigating through the Dolphins’ daunting start to the season (they face Baltimore, New England, Dallas and the Los Angeles Chargers in successive weeks) before entering their Week 5 bye. Rosen makes his first start with the Dolphins at home against the Washington Redskins in Week 6, given him 12 weeks to convince Miami that he can be their long-term solution at quarterback.
    — via DeArdo

    75. Josh Rosen fails to look like the answer
You can blame it on another bad situation, you can blame it on Ryan Fitzpatrick’s persistence, you can blame it on Rosen’s flaws, or you can blame it on all of them. The ex-Cardinal will get a shot at some point in 2019, but he won’t come close to convincing Miami he’s their future.
    — via Benjamin

    100. Tom Brady retires
Forty-two years old. Twenty NFL seasons. Six Super Bowl rings. Four Super Bowl MVP awards. Near the top in nearly every career passing category. With nothing more to prove, and with the Patriots failing to make it back to the Super Bowl for a fourth consecutive year, Tom Brady decides to end a career that will go down as arguably the greatest in pro football history. While Bill Belichick will remain in New England, an incredible era in NFL history will officially end.
    — via DeArdo

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Been one of the ones saying Rosen will get his first start after the bye. Am hoping he does look like the answer though. Brady retire would be nice too, but actually cool if he waits one more year. We won’t be ready yet.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      U75 as per usghe.

  31. Josh Rosen, Miami Dolphins

Strengths: Rosen’s throwing talent and his ability to make big-time throws (tight window, down the seam, back shoulder, throws on the run) illustrated why he was a first-round draft pick in 2018. He can and does make every throw with a strong arm that threatens defenses deep, and he has the ability to extend plays and throw off schedule.

Weaknesses: There is room for improvement in the accuracy department, and, like we saw in his rookie season (19 turnovers), his poor decision-making was still evident at times during the preseason.

GRADE: B+. Rosen improved throughout the preseason and outplayed starter Ryan Fitzpatrick. Rosen earned the right to start in the season opener, but I understand why Miami is rolling with the veteran Fitzpatrick, whose experience will be an asset early in the season against two top-five defenses from 2018 (Baltimore and New England). Questions about Rosen’s leadership qualities and ability to stay disciplined with the game plan are still unanswered at this point.

Steve, its look like i was off, he was a 2017 4th rd pick. so i guess he has been in the league 2 years. effectively one year of playing experience i guess guess because he only has one year of playing experience. Also, it looks like he played last year at RT because he was moved there from LT when Seantrell Henderson got injured in September of that year. That could explain some of the issues he had protecting the passer, since he was playing opposite of the side he was use to. I looked up his combine stuff and it looks like he is a little bit heavy footed and raw. The technique issues that were reported at the combine, fixable, and hopefully our coaches can get that done. His physical traits are off the chain, and you cant train that. The issue with his footwork can sorta be worked on but those big plodding feet are probably never going to be elite, and the difference between a good LT and a great one is in the footwork and foot speed.

Kiko wasnt really good enough, football IQ wise for that system. He is a see ball get ball kinda guy and this sytem is all about knowing your role on any given snap and doing it. It takes better read/diagnose skills than Alonzo had. Again, that not really a hit on Alonzo, he fits some systems well, but i give him credit for realizing this wasnt one and not wasting our time nor his.

Those throws are just amazing. The one that freaks me out the most was the one where he had move backwards to avoid the rush and it looked so awkward and possibly painful, like one leg was stuck in cement, and then he fires a perfect laser right in stride to TE Keith Jackson (I believe that was that play, not sure). Tannehill couldn’t make that throw at a Fest just throwing the ball around with us in the parking lot! LOL

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He once made a throw to Duper where the corner was all over him on a crossing route and Danny put the ball on his hip with a laser in the only place it could have gone. The corner was baffled how that was even possible. I believe it was the playoff game against the Browns when we were trailing 21-3 at the half in 1985 in Bernie Kosar’s rookie season and we came back to win 24-21.

Funny thing about those ratings. They don’t seem to be based on reality. Miami has OFTEN beaten teams ranked 10-15 places higher and will move up one spot while the other team drops one…..

I weep at the sight of such beauty
    —————
That makes two of us weeping at the sight of such beauty, D. Thanks for posting this video.

Speaking strictly for myself, I tend to get accustomed and acclimated to the modern game by watching so much football every year. And even though I was raised on Marino (starting from his rookie season), I’m still astonished by how quickly he loads and unloads the ball… and with such velocity and precision to have his receivers catch the ball in-stride.

Re-watching anything Marino did… it reminds me of how truly spoiled we were to have him as our QB. I mean, there IS a very good reason as to why every QB we’ve fielded since Marino falls drastically short in comparison: there will only ever be ONE Dan Marino… and those of us fans who witnessed him saw a once-in-a-lifetime QB.

In MY eyes (and W/O the homerism), he’s the greatest QB who ever played the game. Period.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ditto! John Madden’s favorite QB was Joe Montana when he became a commentator, but he once said if you want to see what an NFL QB who can make all the throws looks like, go watch Dan Marino practice.

  86. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

IMO, I think the NFL (now celebrating it’s 100 year anniversary) needs to define eras.

Maybe a little something like this…

    I. Pre-merger era (1919-1966)
    II. Merger era (1967-2000)
    III. 2K era (2001-current)

  87. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Another moment about Marino I remember that was in 1984 was PIT OLB Jack Lambert thought he had Marino sacked and as he got up to celebrate, something caught his attention. The pass was completed for a nice gain and he looked so frustrated. LOL

Remember this was an era where QBs still got knocked around, not like in Bradyville. Sorry to say but it’s true.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Do NOT be sorry to say, man. And in Marino’s days, the diminutive Clayton and Duper were knocked around, too. Nothing like this “2K era”, where receivers can’t be touched within 5 yards of running their routes.

It’s truly AMAZING how great Dan Marino was!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep! Some of my football fan friends can’t seem to put Brady in that era and think that sluggish flatfoot would have never survived. He wouldn’t have. He would have never made it to Brady. Just my opinion but I’m sticking to it. LOL

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Besides the competitor in Dan, the arm and quick release… he had elite pocket awareness and footwork.

    —————-
MY prediction for Game 1. To quote Clubber Lang, “Prediction? — PAIN!”
    Ravens — 30
    Dolphins — 13
    —————-
The first episode of “Tank For Tua” is a success. And a near full house will be there to see it.
The following week features the sequel to the “Miracle in Miami.” We all know most sequels are worse than the original. This one is no exception.
    Patriots — 38
    Dolphins — 6

The Patriots game will be the last sellout of the season in Miami until the Super Bowl.

  89. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

OD. I’m more focused on what Grier and Flores are doing and I get it. It’s tough to accept but it had to happen. We’re not void of some nice talent but we have more work to do, and in 2020 we’re going to be loaded and in good shape in 2021 as well. Teams can turn around quickly because of the cap system and acquiring extra draft picks. 2020 is a huge offseason for us. Two 1’s and two 2’s along with probably over $80M in cap space annually. What I mean by that is you can add 8 FA/players at $10M per to turn around your team. Sure there will be a big fish along the way too. Now go back to the draft. The 2020 Miami Dolphins could be scary. 🙂

    Capt Stubbs
Thank you Sir for the shout out.
Great to see you back on here and doing so well in the real world, too.
Up in Charleston where I am from they go out to the gulf stream, which i did once,
but that is waaaayyyy the hell out in the Atlantic.
Then there’s all the back bays, mud flats, and brackish sloughs.
But I know nothing on the subject of fishing.
I am an idiot and ignorant about the sport.
Down here in Naples a lot of guys swear the best tasting fish is snook,
but for some reason there is no commercial market in them,
so you never see them in restaurants, like they’re endangered or something.
People leave a snook light on under their docks in the canals
and catch them on cotton and bread dough. (I think)
Does any of that make sense?
I have zero expertise in fishing.

    David
    about grouper
I am hyper allergic to grouper, perch, and turbot.
    anaphylactic
My throat swells so that my airway closes up, and I can’t breathe.
I can get that just from being in the room where the oils are in the air
such as on “grouper night” or all you can eat grouper fest..
I can detect grouper at quite a distance as my lips start swelling and itching
and my throat gets scratchy at 20 feet from a grouper sandwich.
I get red splotchy hives all over my face and neck and chest
if in the kitchen with them cooking
and if i touch the meat, my hands swell until I can’t touch any fingertip to the one next to it.

I love redfish, bluefish, pompano, mahi mahi, salmon, bass, trout, flounder, cod,
snapper, swordfish, tuna, and many other types of fish. I eat fish at least twice a week.

    just not grouper

    From the night owl… LOL

This is our current roster breakdown:
    OL 9
    TE 3
    WR 5
    QB 2
    RB 5
    FB 1

    DE 3
    DT 3
    LB 8
    DB 11

    K 1
    P 1
    LS 1

I don’t think it will stay like this all season and maybe there is more in the hopper on the DL. The interesting thing is it seems like we want to be fast for week one – against Lamar Jackson

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Telling that we have 6 DL and 8 LBs, that screams we’ll be using 4 man fronts a lot less often, than we did in preseason. Notice I didn’t say we’ll be using more 3-4 than 4-3.

I expect to see a lot of exotic crap this game. Stop Jackson and that goes a long way towards winning.

We may do it slowly (as in not right away), but I expect to see an LB heavy D, like the Chargers used against the Ravens in playoffs.

i’ll believe it when i see it, if Drake can remain the #1 RB on this team, my hats off to the coach.
he’s in a contract year, i would be surprised if we gave him his next contract, i would think we would trade him.
